To concede goals from set plays is never very good for any side, since the lads practice defending corners and free kicks every week in training, but the two goals in the first 16 minutes yesterday were both from corners, and Jonny Evans and Patrice Evra were there to head the ball home almost unchallenged.
Alan Pardew – disappointed with defending
And every corner that came over in that first half seemed to spell danger for Newcastle, and of course it could have been a lot worse than 2-0 at the half – so we were even a bit lucky in that first 45 minutes.
This is what Alan said about that today to the local press:
“As organised as we are and the work we put in, we are gutted with the two goals.” “They were two set-plays. It’s not like it was magical football.”
“They were two great deliveries but we should still defend better.” “For us it was a disappointing start.” “But you have to hold your hands up sometimes because they were on fire.”
“Three or four decisions may have given us a release from the pressure but they never came our way.” “We seemed to lose a few decisions. Everything was going against us.”
It was simply a bad day at the office and we cannot have the same thing happen at the Stadium of Light, and we have to get a result there in our next game a week come Sunday.

He did well with Hughtons squad and he did amazingly last season surely he has earned a shot and who would take his job and do better?
Don’t get me wrong am tired of us playing like crap but its not solely down to Pards, our stars haven’t turned up so far and our owner didn’t do nearly enough in the summer despite all the promises.
As for the mackems I don’t epect a loss its a match we should win without much fuss if our players turn up.
Catchy
Because our squad depth is poor, our players were flashing their backsides at other teams and no one single player has played consistantly well

Comment #42at first i was never a Houghton fan, but with the players he had, he did very well,, got us playing football, would he be the guy to take us into the top 5 of the prem,, no ,, but i had respect for him,,
pardew took over a team that had nothing wrong with it, sold or got rid ov players and got better ones in, now he has better players than what houghton had, he has them playing shit,,
now all the excuses are coming out,,,
the score should have been at least 5 – 1 yesterday, but not for poor finishing by welbeck,,,
we had more of the ball over the whole match,, how many chances did we create ????

Comment #43Matty – Exactly how high up the league do you think Pardew should be taking a squad which cost peanuts to assemble compared to all around us? Maybe, just maybe Tiote. Arfa and Ba and Cabaye etc. are better players for playing under his regime – they all say as much in interviews.

Comment #47Some of you lot are unbelievable. The point of the 8 year contract was for long term stability. Not to change the manager after a couple of bad results (assumming the unthinkable happens against the mackems).
I know I’d certainly rather be in our position with our squad and AP as manager than, say, QPR with a bunch of mercenaries and Mark Hughes as manager.

I would be gutted if i had to sit next to you at the games, so its a good thing you appear to live in Norway
We haven’t played well at the start of the season but were sitting 10th and we have a thin squad with some key players injured, and our team isn’t made of that many special players as some of you belive, what do u want from Pardew?! remember Everton have been started seasons badly for years now but Moyes is hardly a shit manager is he? It is so unfait to blame a manager in Pardews position, if it was so easy to set up a squad playing silky smootjh sexy football then don’t you think everybody would be doing with their thin only recently promoted teams, for f**k sakes get a grip man

i don’t want to spend loads of money. like i said, i like ashley’s way. it gives me pride to know we’re not trying to buy success. i just think we could’ve, from the time we sacked hughton, gotten a lot better quality manager and i still believe that now. im not fond of him as a manager or a person. just my thoughts but, i’m not calling for his head at this point. this is his time to prove he’s the type of manager some of you talk him up to be by changing things around

OUR TEAM IS NOT THAT SPECIAL, who know how them managers would do with our team but they definatley wouldn’t be abel to play the same football they do with Man U and Arsenal, plus how do you think they got to the point they are at now, because of fans and club having patience with them. Comment #59The reason we start slowly in every game is this damn 4-4-2 formation simple as that. The reason we get better after we ship a few goals is we change formation to 4-3-3, it is not rocket science. We get over run in midfield time and again as we play with 2 out and out forward and not a ‘number 10’ who can come deep if needed to make the extra man in midfield. For christ sake Pardew, if you want to play 2 up top you need 2 quality wingers who hug the touchline and wip in the crosses. We have Jonas on the left who’s end product is pants and Ben Arfa on the right who always comes inside.

Comment #60Somebody has to take the flak for how poorly we’ve been playing this season and I find it hard to lay the blame on a man who was considered the best in the business by his fellow peers last season,I put the blame on the ownership by rewarding the manager and players(and fans) for all their efforts by the negligent decisions in letting two strikers go without replacement and in my eyes criminal negligence by not bringing in defensive cover which has been obvious to even the most ardent of Mashley fans, even after the injury to utility player RTaylor nothing was done bringing fans to call Pards a yes man yet again for having to publicly back track on his recruitment stance.

Comment #61Bit late today, been slowly catching up on a few things that have been said. I would like to award comment of the day to Kets (who else?) for this little gem of football knowledge.
“If teams want to beat us, they just need to exploit our weaknesses.”
You are indeed a wise one. Who would have thought the way to beat a tem was to exploit their weaknesses? There was me thinking managers attacked people strengths!
Well, I missed the game (walked in to see Cleverlys goal and thought, hmmm…could probably do without this one.
Some mixed reviews from you all, so making a few assumptions. I’m guessing the best thing to do is to move on from this result and see what happens. May not sit well with some fans, but it is Manchester United and whilst we were playing at home, these things do happen. As an isolated game it’s not the end of the world, but our form / performances so far this season have been far from spectacular.
I honestly don’t think it’s the time for mass panic. We know we could use some extra quality depth if we want to start really pushing the top 4. You’ve all said, the manager has said, the players have said it and I’m sure Ashley and Llambias know it. These players will arrive, it’s a timeline issue for me, not the fact the club aren’t willing or wont buy anyone (as we’ve seen this to not be the case). I know some of you feel if we had paid more (or “the going rate”) we would have been sorted. Maybe, but it’s past and only once January comes can the club do anything about it.
Jamesthefirst…..Spot on. He clearly does read the game pretty well and usually gets a much better performance from his players. He can tend to leave subs a little late for me, but I’m sure he has his reasons, just not sure we’ll all agree whether they’re correct. I’m waiting to see what happens when Krul, Colo and STaylor are back, they are the three most important, back line players at the club.
Given our clear defensive frailties at the minute, to an extent I can understand Pardew playing defensively. We are easily exposed at the minute (well, more so than last season), so perhaps the plan is to keep it tight and hit them second half. Problem is we’re inviting to much pressure on ourselves and not coping with it.
Overall, we’re doing okay, considering league and EL standings. Performances should pick up. Let’s hope so anyway.
Right then, that was exhausting, might need a lie down.

Comment #62matty…sure just read your post mate!
…I actually think Pardew is a great motivator and has in the past been very good at setting up his players and having a game plan (it might not be pretty all the time and we might be lucky at times) but he get results.
I don’t think anyone can question his man management skills and for now the most important thing is stability…at least for me.
No one is beyond criticism and even best has to learn from their mistakes. Pardew need to improve his tactics – finding the right style of play and formation and he need to be better at changing at game that has gone wrong (some would say games shouldn’t go wrong as often as they seem to do at the moment).
Not everything is his fault, but it is his responsibility (and we are not losing because of the ref – can we at least agree on that?) 😀

Comment #63Lets be realistic, this season I think we will finish anywhere from 9th to 13th. I honestly think Pardew has his priorities the wrong way round.
We arent going to get top 4 or top 6 and thats not being defeatist, its realistic. ManU, City, Arsenal, Spurs, Chelsea will be top 5, Everton will probably get 6th at worst so if we accept that we arent going to qualify for Europe through the league then why not prioritise the Europa or FA cup.
It is our best chance to get into Europe next season, we wont get relegated so focus on winning something. Europa League is our best bet I think.
But as we all agree, Pardew has to get the team firing from the 1st whistle especially next match. No good starting to play when we are 2 down.

Comment #64I think 442 works with Ba and shola
If we want to play Ba and cisse it has to be 433 with Ba wide
If he wants to play Ba central as lone striker then cisse benched for me.
Any of those 3 work well for us. The problem is playing players ins formation which doesn’t suite them.

Comment #65Also I’m not being overly critical of pardew
Any manager would have struggles with our team yesterday. Willo and perch are ok with another cb alongside then, together they aren’t experienced enough and have the required ability as a two. Either with Taylor or colo and its not too bad.
Hopefully one thing pardew can put right is our slow start to games, we are going away games before we start playing.

We are playing shit. We are struggling to beat the likes of Norwich and Reading who could only dream of the calibre of player we have (Benny, Cabs, Tiote, Ba, Colo etc)
I would love to see what a real ”footballing” manager could do with that group of players, ie pass and move in a 4231. Take off their straitjackets and let them play. Stop worrying about the opposition all the time. Manu made us look like Stoke !!!
I have steadfastly supported Ashley but this Wonga business just unmasks a lot of tackyness. A superb brand name like Virgin ditched for that scum.

why the name calling???
our team is not that special ,, your right,, but it is way better than what it is showing right now
open your eyes man,, we do not play football, we have no style other than long ball, ( that even proved by the times yesterday) we play more long balls than any other team,,
is tiote cabaye HBA and even jonas really that bad that we should just bypass them ??
my argument is,, we are a team trying to get around 5th position this year,, not my target so dont shot me,,
we have in our team 2 great CF who can score goals but we create nothing for them,,, who sets the team up??? pardew,
do you think our forwards are poor??? they dont get many chances do they,, everyone can see that,, BA is on 6 goals already,, most teams would kill to have our 3 forwards, (HBA) included we do nothing with them
i really dont rate pardew,,

Benni was awfull yesterday, hes a great player on his day but not as great as some of you lot seem to think, ofcourse many of you don’t watch everything and you only notice highlights
Cabs has not been himself this seaon so far
Colo & tiote have hardly played
Ba has been mint but as a forward he cant affect the play that much
We don’t have a squad of players who are fully adept at playing silky short passing technical football all the time, you should know this as you probably have a go at Wilko, simpson, shola et al for this every week

Comment #78King…..Maybe it’s easier as I didn’t watch the game 🙂 There is no disputing that if they had got in another CB and FB, then right now, we’d probably not be in the same sort of problems. However, we have been hit hard with injuries so far and are “coping” ok. Not what we want, but it could be a lot worse. If this is the worst that we’ll have to deal with this season, then I can handle that. If when players are back we don’t start to see an improvement, then I’ll start putting more belief in to a deeper problem.
Catchy….Can I ask who you think we should have got in as manager? I was not a fan or Pardew arriving at SJP, but he has taken us up a level (maybe just first season luck?) from Hoots. I don’t know who some of you expect to take over at the club. We have a horrible history with regards to managers (we even fired one of the bests in Bobby Robson – Oh yeah, what an attractive option we are), so I just don’t see who it is people think we should have.
