Newcastle Target – Interest Is Huge Compliment

Virgil van Dijk is a 21 year-old center-back who currently plays for FC Groningen in the Dutch league, and Newcastle have been linked with this player since March of this year, and perhaps Newcastle are looking to make a move for the player in January.

Virgil van Dijk – 21 year-old Dutch center back flattered by interest

We hope Newcastle are looking to make a move for the player in January – with van Dijk already having appeared for the Dutch U21 side.

The fee that has been touted around is £2m – and that’s something that Newcastle could even afford to pay out in January,  if they are indeed keen on getting this player on Tyneside.

And it seems the player takes it as a compliment that he has been linked with the likes of Newcastle United recently:

“There were a few conversations before and it looked quite good.   Several people in England still write about alleged interest.   I’m being followed, and that’s a huge compliment.”

With Ryan Taylor and Haris Vukic now out for the season with ACL knee injuries,  our squad is depleted, so we hope the powers that be at Newcastle will bring a couple of good players in during the January transfer window.

Virgil van Dijk was born in Breda, Holland and joined Groningen from Willem in the summer of 2010, and since then he has played a total of 35 times for Groningen and scored 5 goals, and he only turned 21 in July.

What do you think of bringing van Dijk to Newcastle?

Wouldn’t count him as high profile. Only plus points are that Streete and Good may get earlier than expected opportunities.

Realistically a team with top 4 aspirations is not going to make that with Simmo, Willo, a crocked Saylor, a crocked Raylor and even a much improved Perch.

So if we don’t buy the likes of Debuchy and M’Biwa in January we have to hope that the Bigis, Fergies, Goods and Streetes progress very quickly. They just might.

It has already been amply demonstrated that our defence should have been strengthened BEFORE the season started. The fact it wasn’t is affecting our results and therefore our league position which obviously impacts on our ability to qualify for Europe next season.

It could already be too late to salvage a qualifying position, but “never say never” you can never tell in this league. All we can do is hope Lamearse corrects the error made in the close season as soon as practical!!

Dick van Dyke is probably more probable with our track record in signing centrebacks….Lets wait and see in January instead of the predictable rumour mongering
