Fabricio Coloccini has been out with a hamstring problem for most of the season, and the Newcastle captain has only played four times for the club so far this season.
Coloccini leads Newcastle out at Cardiff pre-season – a game we lost 4-1
But we are hoping that he is ready to lead the side out against Sunderland on Sunday afternoon, in a game that will be close, but that Newcastle must do well in, to make up for a fairly lackluster start to the season.
His Argentine compatriot Jonas Gutierrez has been the stand-in captain this season while Fab’s been out with injury, and Gutierrez is hoping the big man will be back for Newcastle on Sunday, as he had this to say to the local press today:
“Now hopefully Colo will be back.” “We have a good two weeks to be fit, and it’s really important for us.” “We know that the players like Perchie – James Perch – and Willo – Mike Williamson – have been doing fantastic jobs.”
“We know as well we don’t have a big squad, so we need all the players back.”
Indeed Newcastle should be able to start a strong side, and although Ryan Taylor, Dan Gosling and Haris Vuckic are out with long term injuries, we could see the return of Colo, Tim Krul, Steven Taylor and Danny Simpson on Sunday.
That’s good news – and those are some of Newcastle’s very best players and we’ve certainly missed them, even though it’s true that Perch and Williamson have done good jobs under very difficult circumstances.
Things would have been even better if we hadn’t lost both Haris Vuckic and Dan Gosling in the U21 game at Villa Park a week yesterday, but that’s how things go in football.
Let’s hope the lads can get the win we all want to see on Sunday afternoon.

Comment #2Last season we had the same back 5 for the first 11/12 league games. This season all of those back 5 have been injured, that is the difference.
Admittedly raylor is no longer 1st choice left back but would have given us extra options.
So out of probably our best back 5 only santon has not been injured this season.

Comment #3So we’ve been missing 4 out of our normal 5 defenders (inc GK)? Not been doing too badly really…..
Should there be a smiley wink here or does the point stand as it is?

Sat down with Alan Pardew today to discuss all things #nufc – don’t miss it in the next few nights in the Evening Chronicle
Been a while since i’ve read something from Alan, or atleast it feels that way, lol.
Looking forward to it.

Very true and when you add in tiote and cabs at the start of the season weve basically been missing 6 first team players and the entire spine of the team and raylor to one of our most reliable players when called upon!

Comment #6tads…Not 100%, but pretty sure it’s spelt with an a, not an i. Unless you write with a slight aussie accent?
Either way, no.
On the subject of missing players, I don’t think it will help with many people’s mood about things. In their opinion (and it’s not completely wrong), if we had strengthened more, it wouldn’t be as bad.
Personally, I think we’re doing pretty well considering. If this is us struggling, watch out when we do start playing well – hopefully starting at the stadium of web foot freaks 😉

Yes! That’s why, altho it’s not been an amazing start, and we’ve not beaten some of the teams we thought we should have, it’s been a solid start for me.
Midtable with that ammount of injuries, the extra games and juggling teams for various games.
Add Euro inexperience and many young players in general being played…
Couldn’t be doing too much better with current team.

Yeah i can see the arguement and really do wish we’d bought in atleast a cb but tbf i dont see that one cb and debuchy would of made a huge amount of difference when missing key midfielders and dont know enough about douglas to know how he’d be without captain colo or the safety net of krul behind him

Comment #15fingers crossed Taylor and Colo can start fit now for the rest of the season. Simpson has been missed too!
Probably one of few, but i hope Obertan gets a start Sunday. Cattermole to get his standard red and a 3-0 Toon win will do nicely.

Comment #17Tads…In theory it would have made a difference. Reality is it might not have. They may not have adjusted, they may have gotten injured themselves. However, being a fan who praises Carr, I suppose I would have to assume they would adapt okay – can’t just twist information to suit my argument (god forbid).
We didn’t, we must move on, in the meantime the players we do have are doing okay. Hope form will improve and that Pardew get’s the players he wants without complete disaster unfolding.

Constructive and witty comments from you as always my friend. I bow to your superior people skills in making friends and influencing people. How do you do it?. Oh wait…!
Yes 442 is boring same old, same old isn’t it? Couldn ‘t agree more.
Look back at the emails and you’ll see I was happy as a sand boy when we were winning 6 on the spin playing 433 but don’t let that get in the way of your selective memory.

Comment #20Geordie 157 Cattermole is suspended ! Last season we kept an unchanged team for fist 10/11 games Santon could not get a look in … This year we have yet to start with our strongest 11 injuries have cost us ! Looking forward to the game Sunday with our big hitters back as player for player we are stronger all round but in a derby game that means nowt it’s all about heart desire and passion bring it on …

Comment #21tads…There certainly are those that would still find fault if we had bought Douglas and Debuchy…for some it is never enough (please note the word some – not all).
I think Perch and Willo do a decent enough job, but hand on heart, most fans know to “push on” we need better competition at CB.
RB I can live with for now, but with Stevie’s record (No, I can’t remember getting a full season out of him) a CB is needed. Ideally we’d get a decent defender who can fill in FB and CB (Not utility as such), maybe someone like Pieters? Although I know some are less than impressed, not sure why though – haven’t seen too much of him.

Stop playing to the gallery!
On the injury point Bollance did make a good point on what we can expect when everyone’s fit. Here’s hoping.
On a general NUFC point MA desrves patience from the fans. Looking back on the transfer window which occupies much time and space let me run a few observations through you.
1) Last years signings of Cabaye, Ba and Santon highlighted the blueprint going forward and captured a Europa place.
2) It put into sharp focus the business practice of MA
and the scouting ability of GC.
3) A strict adherence in transfer activity along financial guidelines.
4)The culling of fringe high cost players was seen by many as clearing the decks for new signings. Not helped by Pardew saying earlier in summer that 3-4 signings were being sort.
5) With reduction in wage burden are January signings more likely?
6) Failure to sign additional players is just a timing issue and does not show a lack of ambition!
7) Transfer policy needs drastic revision as we’ve hit a glass ceiling!
Recent DL utterances are not helpful. However these suggest that we’ve already moved onto phase 2 which is to produce a conveyor belt of internal talent.

Comment #33A real shame that two of the lads we were hoping to come through big time have been injured with long term injuries.

Is Vuckic gonna get a new deal?i think his deal runs out next year.
He may not get a deal with his injury problems

Comment #35I think it’s time for Pardew to grow a pair and change the system. Our team looks so lifeless and disjointed. Playing the same formation and tactics every week doesn’t work. Teams figure you out and then you have to change, by then it’s too late…
With the likes of Simpson,Colo,Saylor and Krul back our defence looks a lot stronger. Also don’t be fooled by how poor the mackems have been this season. They’ve got a good manager tbf and are desperate to win. Everyone needs to be at 110% on Sunday. I will not take a defeat considering I’ll have 2 Mackem relatives to deal with after. 🙂

1) We have been badly beaten when we have played 4-3-3 before, this season and last, whereas we have played both bad & good by playing 4-4-2, its all about changing to who your playing and which players you can pick from
2) Despite the fact that were middle of table and have had a hard run of teams, our poor play will not be simply down to a 4-4-2 formation, there are so many variables in football, not just the formation
3) If we were to miraculously start playing amazing football by changing to 4-3-3 don’t you think Pardew would have done it by now, there will be reasons he hasn’t., im sure of it
4) Colocinni has not been around much, its not like we have great ball playing with defenders without him, does Pardew have the ability to all of a sudden make these amazing passers with superb ball control?
