Newcastle are reported to be interested in Dutch U21 goalkeeper Jeroen Zoet, according to the Daily Mail, and they may try to bring the young goalkeeper to Tyneside in January.
Jeroen Zoet – PSV 21 year-old goalkeeper
Zoet currently plays for RKC Waalwijk, and is on loan from his club PSV in the Dutch Eredivisie, and he played for Holland at Slovakia last Thursday night and kept a clean sheet in Holland’s 2-0 win in the European U21 qualifying game.
And last night in the home game against Slovakia, Holland again won 2-0 in the Sparta Stadium in Rotterdam.
Newcastle are not particularly short of goalkeepers, although veteran Steve Harper will be 38 in Marc,h and Dutch number one Tim Krul is Newcastle’s first team goalkeeper, so it will be strange if Newcastle sign the 6’3″ Zoet, because we’ll have two young Dutch goalkeepers.
Tim Krul arrived at Newcastle when he was 17 from his home town club ADO Den Haag in the summer of 2005, when he was just 17 and the fee was around €220K (£175K), and he has been developed by Newcastle into a goalkeeper who is close to becoming world-class.
Newcastle fans may feel we don’t need another goalkeeper brought into the ranks, but Newcastle are always on the lookout for top young talent, independent of what position they play in.
It seems that Chief Scout Graham Carr and goalkeeping coach Andy Woodman were at the match in Slovakia last night, and saw the 21-year-old keep a second clean sheet in a row.
Zoet has so far made 14 appearances for the Dutch under-21 side, since making his debut two years ago, and is a highly rated goalkeeper in Holland, although he has never played a first team game for PSV yet.
The Daily Mail is reporting that Newcastle are weighing up a move for the goalkeeper in January, but we’d be very surprised if that happens.
Rob Elliott is showing he is a very good goalkeeper, and he could be one for the future, so we seem to well off for goalekepers.
But there again if this lad is a top talent, Newcastle may go after him, if Graham Carr recommends it.
