Pardew – Big Signings Still Possible At Newcastle

6:08 pm, Thursday, October 18th, 2012 by Ed Harrison · 104 Comments

The days of Newcastle paying big fees for players may be over, but Alan Pardew, the Newcastle manager is not so certain, and he says that could still be possible in the future.

Alan Pardew – big signings still possible a Newcastle

In his interview with the Evening Chronicle today, Alan was asked if there could still be a chance of a major signing in the future, and he had this to say:

“Of course there is, if we think we are getting value for money.” “There is no way we will sign an £8million player who is 28. I know that, so there is no point me looking at them.”

“But if there’s a 22-year-old at £11M who has potential and I can convince him there is a £30M player there, it could be different.”

“We still need to work within our budget and with the market we’ve got, we are probably on an even keel at the moment – with a good team.”

It seems that all the Newcastle owner Mike Ashley is after is value for money, and as Alan says he would like pay out around £11M if the value if the player could triple in a few years – who wouldn’t?

The good news earlier today was that it seems Graham Carr and the scouting staff are in high gear to scout players for January – and we’d love to see a couple of top defenders come in.

And then in the summer maybe a young striker that Newcastle are willing to pay out £11 for?

Come to think of it Newcastle brought in a certain Papiss Cisse for almost £10M last January, and Papiss has since scored 15 goals for Newcastle.

Sounds good to us.

After reading through today’s articles I feel abit more upbeat about the club, although I thought we wanted a CB in the summer. It’s clear that its llambias that is the one not going ahead with transfers, not Ashley.
We would still need a FB and a ST even if we did bring in a CB,
I think the lower down the table we are, the more desperate we’ll be to get players in.

  • 2 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Oct 18, 2012 at 6:15 PM

Been saying this since Dereks latest words of wisdom. Nothing is really set in stone. The releases are to try and control expectations and to gain the upper hand with future transfer dealings. The summer turned out to be harder than expected, so the chaps are trying to regain some control. That’s what I think anyway. Never take anything our car salesman MD says, whether positive or negative, as gospel. He can’t lie straight in bed that man.

  • 3 Deadpool // Oct 18, 2012 at 6:16 PM

This makes sense as Ashley doesnt look at players as footballers, mearly investments.

Of course he’d spend £11 million if he’d be worth 30 in the future, but would he retain that player in order to bring the club to the top? No!

Why spend money with no guarantee on return? We could spend £100 million and not be guaranteed a top 4 finish.

Invest in low priced players with potential as they can guarentee some return!

  • 4 WWYCD // Oct 18, 2012 at 6:18 PM

He just cant seem to make up his mind can he? Poor bloke must be terrible having a take away with him

  • 5 toonarmydownsouth // Oct 18, 2012 at 6:18 PM

    Super mag
Well said mate can see nout but good things coming for the toon!

    Ibiza
Maybe they could buy i dont think the blog ever got as desperate as german pirates?

  • 6 AMEOBI // Oct 18, 2012 at 6:20 PM

    cheers ibiza and nufc786.

Might pop em on ebay within a few hours for 200. I’d have gone myself but sitting with a bunch of mackems would kill me plus id celebrate no doubt about it haha.

Sit at home and watch on sky it is, sadly

  • 7 chuck // Oct 18, 2012 at 6:24 PM

    Erm !
If i can sign a Young player for 11 million, who would eventually be worth 30 million, i would.
    Yeah right , wouldn,t everyone!
Is this some kinda revelation ?

  • 8 Magpies-till-d3ath // Oct 18, 2012 at 6:25 PM

    Luis Muriel please then! :)

  • 9 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Oct 18, 2012 at 6:25 PM

tads…..I think people are being extremely dismissive about German pirates. What’s everyone’s issue? Do they not deserve to be represented?

Take a little look to the right hand side of your screen. You’ll see a little red advertisement box. Take note my friend this short sighted attitude will not be tolerated.

Yo…Only when Ashley is paying for said take out.

“Hi Mike, well the large chips costs £1.50, small chips is £1.20, but you can get two small chips for £2. I’ve counted the number of chips in each serving and you’d be best off to get the 2 small for £2. There is however a batch that fell on the floor and they’re willing to give them to us for 50p – thoughts?”

  • 10 check the toastie // Oct 18, 2012 at 6:25 PM

We wil make big signings only after we hav sold some of our big players, this current team has been built with liverpools money, make no mistake, I see ba away in the coming months and then maybe cabaye in the summer, we may then buy big players who fit into our pay structure, pardew annoys the shit out of me at times.

  • 11 archaeomag // Oct 18, 2012 at 6:26 PM

” . . . no way we will sign an £8million player who is 28″
I wonder who he is talking about?

Well I’ll be W@nga’d – perhaps the journo-chronic transfer stories have been made up all along

Ameobi…Not sure I was much help, but you’re welcome. Probably for the best, I mean, are all your shots up to date? Gotta be careful near the unwashed.

Chuck….I think it probably is, yes. Most people have said “he will NEVER pay £10m or over”, this indicates differently.

  • 14 Super Magpie // Oct 18, 2012 at 6:34 PM

    Ibiza

I forgot that you were the bully on here.
You know it’s disgraceful what you do, making everyone agreeing with you against their will. I’ve had enough of this, I’m going to have to disagree with your post…

Wait! Please don’t hurt me!!! I was just joking. I agree with everything you just said. I was stupid and did a bad thing there. I’m sorry…

    On a serious note
Lets hope we F**king smash the mackem scum on Sunday.
I’ll be very pleased. If we lose get ready for a rant. Ofc it will be after the real Doomongers have left, because they just post irrelevant c.rap

  • 15 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Oct 18, 2012 at 6:35 PM

Yo….Throw enough potch at the wall and eventually something will stick. I should probably leave now, it’s unlikely to get any better.

Deadpool….Don’t most owners do the same? If you have the chance to triple your “investment” (and whichever way you want to look at it, they kind of are investments), then you would likely sell. There are of course questions over when and the long term benefit to the club, but with that sort of scale, I’m pretty sure that player would be a goner from most clubs.

  • 16 Rozzy // Oct 18, 2012 at 6:35 PM

Why is it we are willing to spent £8-12 million on strikers but only around £3-5million on a defender when our defence is clearly our weak point. When was the last time we had a strong all round back 4. Newcastle have challenged the top clubs a number of seasons in the past 20 years but always fall short. The clubs who do progress and stay at the top always have a solid defence. We’ve had strikes as good as the top clubs strong midfield with depth and quality keepers but as defence goes it always seem if Newcastle can bring in on good defender that will do.

  • 17 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Oct 18, 2012 at 6:38 PM

Super….Good save there mate…you took it it the edge of no return and pulled it back just in time. Was planning a cuddle attack for a second….close shave some might say. I am a forgiving ruler, but please don’t test me again.

Not to try and counteract my arrogance (even if it was intended as a joke)…..Nope, can’t do it.

I hope it’s a convincing game, have some doubts as it is derby day and anything can happen. Should win it, let’s hope we do. If not, might need to take a little holiday – how long do you think it’ll take to calm down? 2020 when Quasi has predicted some silverware?

  • 18 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Oct 18, 2012 at 6:40 PM

Rozzy….It is a reoccurring theme at the toon. Surely this hasn’t escaped those at the top…..

To be fair though, our captain cost a bit more than £2-3m, so maybe we’re just waiting for the right defender. I wonder if he’s even born yet? :)

  • 19 Jail for Ashley // Oct 18, 2012 at 6:43 PM

Before anyone gets the wrong idea about this post I am in no way comparing us with the likes of Man U but using their transfer policy as an example, they have just paid a fortune for RVP when they could have had a secret(illegal)meeting with him and have got him for free or next to nothing in January,in that time they may have lost a lot of ground to Man City and Chelsea without his (RVP) goals,us on the other hand can probably get Douglas for a couple of million cheaper in January, where in that time because of a lack of defensive cover we could well be in the wilderness come January when I believe we should be pushing for at least a repeat of last season.

  • 20 Super Magpie // Oct 18, 2012 at 6:45 PM

I’m not going to predict anything, because like you said, anything can happen. I think if we get them under pressure early and get a goal, it will silence the stadium and they’ll bottle it again.
Hoping for a win, would take a draw if we come from behind. Anything less and I’ll be more than disappointed.

  • 21 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Oct 18, 2012 at 6:50 PM

Jail…Why the need to start with a disclaimer?

Good job you’re not likening us to Man U, they’re useless, just ask the blogs oracle.

In theory, you’re probably right. They have taken a gamble and whilst many predicted it wouldn’t pay off, I doubt they expected to lose RTaylor, STaylor (although they should of with him tbh), Colo and even Krul to an extent. Considering, we have done reasonably well, although, with extra cover, probably although not definitely, we would have done better. I suppose the difference is, Mike is simply not willing to pay for the what if’s and would rather miss out due to not spending than be left missing out after paying for something which is not really anymore guaranteed. Not sure I’ve made my point well there, heck, not even sure I have one. I’m hoping the more I write, the less people care and the less chance someone will pull me up on my ramblings. No more bullying, I will win by boring people in to submission!

  • 22 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Oct 18, 2012 at 6:52 PM

Super…How very sensible. You sure you support the toon? I’m keeping an eye on you.

  • 23 Dannyo // Oct 18, 2012 at 6:53 PM

I’ve always understood it as value for money. Every deal we’ve done represents that and there’s various fees in all those deals.
Only Obertan has come out bad where we’ve spent money imo.
But AP thought he could get the best out of him.

  • 24 tarie4 // Oct 18, 2012 at 6:54 PM

    Jail for Ashley

If van persie stayed at Arsenal till the contract ran out, man U probably would have not gotten him, his wages would have been sky high mate.
RVP was premier league proven Douglas is not. He might have come here and flopped big time, or he might have been a hit (who knws)
What I am saying man U knw what they were getting (Premier league proven) ours with Douglas was a risk, and at 5-6 mill in the last year of his contract. Just didn’t add up.

  • 25 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Oct 18, 2012 at 6:54 PM

Haha, insert whatever u see fit mate, i’m still hoping for Obertan to suddenly unleash the beast within, but that hope dims every match he plays so far…

Dannyo and Tarie…When his inner squid comes out it will be beautiful. Mark my words!

Well, it’s been a pleasure, we’ve covered pirates, incoming players, outgoing players, the clubs management, ownership, chips, sunderland and now squid. My work here is done.

    Until next time fellas.

  • 29 mattyNUFC // Oct 18, 2012 at 7:05 PM

still think we should be looking at other targets. not impressed by Douglas and though he’s decent, i think pardew is indicating Debuchy will not be coming in if it is anything near 8mil

i agree with the transfer policy. there’s no two ways about it we should have had suitable back-up targets like we were assured the board had in May of this year. I also find it hard to believe said back-up choice would NOT have improved our back line when the options we’ve had come in have failed to live up to last year bar Perch, I thought has been outstanding at CB. Cant go back in time though and we can’t coerce MA or DL to care about our club at the same level 99% of us do. The only thing we can hope for is that Pardew does his job and turns this around. a loss against the mackems will definitely, for the first time since Pardew’s introduction before we played Liverpool, cause some serious, serious division amongst the fans

    Big Pappa Cissé

He isn’t worth 11 mill more like 30 mill already and increasing

  • 33 Tonytoon73 // Oct 18, 2012 at 7:44 PM

Sorry to say but Pardew is f@cking idiot. One minute we are happy with the purple and won’t sign anyone. Now we might sign a big signing. FFS stop listening to lamearse. Slimy twat.

  • 34 89Norcal // Oct 18, 2012 at 7:45 PM

@mattyNUFC, A loss to the scum would tick alot of people off, but I’m not sure a schism is in order. We are 2-3-2 as it stands which is remarkable for the horrible football we’ve been playing and injuries we’ve had.

I for one will be considerate of the fact AP hardly ever has a consistently healthy back line that can get some experience together, and he’s juggling a volatile situation with Ba and Cisse. Meanwhile while we limp around with injuries, teams like Sunderland have improved their team dramatically over the summer.

  • 35 beefman13 // Oct 18, 2012 at 7:46 PM

Matty, so there maybe be a mutiny and torch carrying if the unthinkable happens on sunday, sack the board i havnt heard that one for a while, im surprised at you, not a pop at you, im just surprised quite a bit that you should say that, i thought a few other lemon suckers on here might have said that sort of thing.

all over not bringing a centre half in, colo and saylor WILL be back maybe Krul as well.

I wonder how the boro supporters are feeling at this moment i bet thats all they had to worry about a bloody centre half yawn yawn yawn,.

super owner steve gibson, yet another one who financed above the clubs income.

lets be thankful that we are not them cos they could be down their for years to come like a lot said we would.

They havnt got the lickings of a dog, they are buying players from the likes of the other boro, NUNEATON.

The boro is just a reminder of the way our club could have went, can we be at least a bit thankful that we are in europe and have some very very good players as well.

Pardew should be a million miles from getting any stick at the toon for the job he has done.

  • 36 bollance // Oct 18, 2012 at 7:54 PM

    Well this is good news.

So we have pretty much gone from not signing anyone to possibly signing an £11m player in about 10 days. The nufc roller coaster.

Maybe we have moved up a level and are not looking around in the £5-6m bracket.

Bigger money, bigger risk. But then again bigger reward if the player reaches their potential.

  • 37 Tonytoon73 // Oct 18, 2012 at 7:54 PM

beefman, would you work for lamearse? That is why i am calling pardew an idiot, having to beg off a casino manager for money for players who has not got a clue about football.

  • 38 Big Pappa Cissé // Oct 18, 2012 at 7:57 PM

Is it any coincidence that this has been said no longer than a week after the Wonga deal ?

    HOT NEWS
Ibiza pulls splinters out of his bum as he climbs off the fence.

  • 40 mattyNUFC // Oct 18, 2012 at 8:08 PM

never said anything about sacking the board, beef man

let’s wait to see what happens though. if we lose do you really not expect this blog to turn into some dissenting void?

on the CB issue….i tell myself i’m over it but let’s be honest here; we’ve needed one for years….yeah, that won’t be solved so we’ve got to work with what we’ve got but if we’re being pragmatic, i think it’s safe to say saylor was not the rock he was in the first 11/12 games of last season. colo for that matter has contributed a few blunders to the cause as well. he’s still a class above most but willo is just as reliant on either saylor or colo for a solid performance, so too is colo. his pace is nonexistent so for him to succeed he needs to saylor a la 2011 to get stuck in for him. saylor, given he’s only played a few games, has looked a shadow for his hard tackling, astute game-reading self of last year

our back line has been a problem for ages. just hoping january can sort it out bc i feel, even with a full-strength defence, it is still our weakest link

    89Norcal

only at NUFC would we call a selection headache, an advantage we’ve been screaming out for for years, as ‘volatile’. it’s only as bad as pardew makes it and he’s made it quite bad when these guys should have been selected with the greater scope of the team and results in mind, not folding to their own wants and desires and incorporation for incorporation’s sake

  • 41 mattyNUFC // Oct 18, 2012 at 8:09 PM

sorry for the typos….damn auto correct

  • 42 beefman13 // Oct 18, 2012 at 8:10 PM

Tonytoon, we have had one of the greatest rises in football stature in the last three years from being relegated ( with a team of 350 international caps)

Lets say as been told DL sanctions signings then tiote santon ben arfa anita ba cisse bigi cabaye etc isnt to bad a track record is it, and bladdreing nolan carroll enrique barton has proved correct as well.

we have went from the near abyss to europe within three years one of the greatest achievments in prem league history. we are healthy, we have money to buy players with cash and we will do in january. good ones as well.

No players being bought on the never never as before and they just about always turned out to be duds. and on and on and on.

We at the toon now have found a brilliant formula i just dont get how you say he knows nowt about football business, he may not come across as the most likeable person but the club are speaking quite a bit now and thats what a lot wanted

    business/football wise we are flying

Ive got to say imo you are miles off.

MFH…What’s this about my hot bum? This is hardly the time or place good sir. Well done for not using a smiley, wouldn’t want people thinking your a little girly now, would we?

Tony…Bit harsh calling Pardew an idiot for working for Derek. He might now be a great boss, but it is a great job, better than any he has ever had. From the sounds of it, as far as the football side of things goes, he is left to do his job – which I suppose is great news seeing as the two upstairs are more concerned about the business end of things.

  • 51 Tonytoon73 // Oct 18, 2012 at 8:42 PM

  • 52 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Oct 18, 2012 at 8:43 PM

    Offkey….Decent interview…Liked this bit in particular…

“”Sunday we have to win 100%, but it’s OK because if we put Shola Ameobi on the pitch and he scores,” Santon joked of the striker’s seven goal career haul against the Wearsiders.”

  • 53 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Oct 18, 2012 at 8:45 PM

Tony….Not directed at me, but that hasn’t stopped me in the past. Didn’t Nolan want a nice long contract? Would that have been a great idea? He does get goals, absolutely, but how long will that keep happening and where would he play in our current team? It’s easy to say, look at him and what he does, but is it relevant to our current situation? For me, it’s a bit like people complaining now about selling Forster (you know, now he’s been “called up” to the England team), it’s all a bit far fetched imo.

  • 54 beefman13 // Oct 18, 2012 at 8:52 PM

Tony in fairness i liked nolan, but you know as well as me he pushed for that move he wasnt forced out in any way, he wanted 5 year contract when 3 on top of his year left was offered which i think was a good deal, and if he really loved the toon as much as the money he would have stayed, truth is he would have been a sub more often than not and he knew it.

  • 55 Tonytoon73 // Oct 18, 2012 at 8:53 PM

Ibiza, in my opinion i would have give him the longer contract. I classed the lad on the same level as Gary Speed and he played till he was 38 and was still one hell of a player. RIP

  • 56 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Oct 18, 2012 at 8:58 PM

Tony….On Speed, indeed one hell of a player (RIP). Nolan’s saving grace was getting goals, apart from that he was and is on the decline. Maybe you’re right and he’ll keep it up for a fair few more years, time will tell. Where would you play him now and who would be benched?

Everyone who work for NUFC have no problem at all, no back biting even pedro says he hasnt had a moments bother, our backroom staff even go socializing after work which is quite rare. and yes i would not have a moments hesitation working for MA or DL in fact i do enough PR for them now, and im not even on the bloody paylist.

  • 59 solano // Oct 18, 2012 at 9:03 PM

I think Matty touches on an interesting point re: contemplation of the unthinkable happening on Sunday…but although we have a fair share of fans who change opinions after every result, I would hazard a guess that neither a positive or negative result against the Germ Carriers would sway people into siding with or protesting against regimes.
The cynical timing of deliberatley leaking/releasing controversial deals is nothing new at NUFC and it is no coincidence that an international break and an extremely important away fixture were to follow the latest Wonga Sponsorship/Colour Purple furore and DL should show the fans more respect….I hope he gets his due rewards one day.
However, we will be taking part in this country’s most bitter provincial derby this Sunday….let’s put the barstewards to the sword again before returning to our other arguments! ;-)

Might probably just be me or does our manager saying only value for money deals will go through sort of echo his comments on the Debuchy deal?… I mean he admitted the agent gave us a figure but we wouldn’t negotiate Lilles price, kinda unsettling/ tapping him up. Plus we won’t sign an 8mill 28year old… Well if that’s the case then how do we get a mix and the kids learn, because lets face facts, if benny Cabaye, Ba and Krul haven’t got trophies here then they won’t stick around!

  • 63 beefman13 // Oct 18, 2012 at 9:10 PM

Ibiza, ba and cisse up front normally dosnt work they have not much nous ie flick ons runs off the ball cohesion.,.

bit of a seagull is nolan picks up scraps in the box, .nolan maybe would not feed of them as well as he did carroll. ie ba n cisse.

Someone mentioned earlier that cisse is an instinct player split second decision and in the back of the net.

When he has time to think he can look a bit lost, and dosnt really know what to do.

    Beefman…I’ll take that :)

Tony…So, we’re only one player (and an aging one at that) away from class? Things are looking good then! Okay, okay, slight twisting of your comment, I admit it. And please don’t blame your hatred of Santon on your phone, not like you to hide away from your opinions!

Solano….Good shout, we’ll stay united until after the mackem game, but then business as usual!!!

  • 65 beefman13 // Oct 18, 2012 at 9:16 PM

Andy in the past NUFC went for a lot of these 28/9/30 year olds who came here for their final big pay check and they very rarely worked.

DL owned up and said they are looking for value its a business and MA runs all his businesses with that proviso.

Get them at a good age get a good contract out of them move them on and replace, like as ivwe mentioned before what the gooners do.

it stops the players getting stale and we bring well scouted class players in hopefully which will be cheaper of course but NUFC will continue to grow finacially that way and have hungry players who want to do a job for us like the ones we have brought in the last three seasons

It has been stated thats what they want to do so it is clearly out there.

  • 66 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Oct 18, 2012 at 9:19 PM

Beefman….Nolan did us well, me personally, agree with how the club handled that one. I was just playing with my own question of where he would fit in now.

On the Cisse and Ba partnership, I’d love it to work, but it doesn’t seem to be, so I would rotate them, maybe the odd game together. Take away the idea that they don’t play well together (I refrained from using the word fact there), but we are somewhat short on Strikers, so why play our best 2 each game? 5 man midfield (whether that’s 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 or whatever) should help us control more and utilise our players. Works for me, I do also recognise 4-4-2 has its time, but that time isn’t every game.

Cisse will come good again, I have no doubt about that. He has come close a few times. Even the best striker in my living memory went through dry spells (although they are hard to remember with his normal goal scoring antics). I say bring back Shearer, hell, get Beardo back on the pitch.

    ibiza

    ….diplomacy…?? who knows, really.

that’s why i hate pigeonholing but at the same time i do appreciate conviction. it’s a tough game, no doubt this choosing allegiances. I think, for me personally, if you take football against my views on social and political issues, i tend to be very inquisitive, always questioning and no doubt that plays a role in the views i take with regards to all that is NUFC as well. while the inner fan tells me to remain optimistic it is very hard to overlook aspects that have frankly been done blatantly against the better will of the club. i think for the most part my views are pretty clear:

i support MA’s ‘vision’….not necessarily everything he does, by any means. since i started supporting newcastle i’ve always been proud of what we’ve been associated with; hard work, representative of blue-collar workers who physically put their bodies on the line. I appreciate that and whether MA has ulterior motives (selling for a profit, etc) when it comes to his ‘vision’ there is no other club in the world i’d rather associate myself with

I’ve yet to be fully convinced by Pardew and, without going as far as writing him off, I don’t see a substantial change in how I view him. I’ve never thought highly of him as a man and I’m not a particular fan of his management skills.

regardless of the result v sunderland i don’t think those views will sway substantially either way, but to assume it won’t sway many other fans is a bit off the mark. One needs to look no further than the hyperbolic posts muttered by many after game day (myself included, occasionally).

and i feel i’ve always stated if the style is there, because in the end this is all about entertainment, whichever way you look at it, i’ll be content. i remember being berated a few times last year and having folks rebut with ‘would you rather be a swansea who plays slick, passing football and be in mid-table or would you rather grind out the results?’ well, unequivocally i’d take style over league standing, because the difference between ourselves, NUFC and a swansea, is that we have the structures in place to push on from good football and a midtable finish. for the near future swansea will continue to cave to big prices for their better players. a lot of optimists said last year ‘europe is coming a year too soon.’ there’s an argument there, no doubt, but if success is not planned for something is woefully wrong with the people in our club. that’s what every sport club and franchise in the world aims for. i think the club is in a beautiful position currently. do i think we could’ve helped our chances MASSIVELY with a few new signings? no s*** i think that. but it is what it is and i am really rooting for pardew and hopes he can get this very, very talented squad to push on from last year’s success

Doesn’t Ben Arfa have a couple of goals already

  • 72 mattyNUFC // Oct 18, 2012 at 9:25 PM

    whew, that was some post….

ibiza, i think 99.999% of fans agree that a rotation between ba and cisse in the central role is the way to go. why pards hasn’t seen this yet is another major catalyst to my frustrations with him.

having said that, was i the only one who was impressed with cisse out on the wing? surprisingly so i was. I lamented pardew for putting him there pre-match but thought he did quite well before we reverted back to 442. he wasn’t crossing but, hey, which winger do we have that actually does that anyway? he held the ball up better than any other time he’s been on the pitch for us….i don’t think it’s the long-term solution but it wasn’t woeful by any means

  • 73 Tonytoon73 // Oct 18, 2012 at 9:26 PM

  • 74 mattyNUFC // Oct 18, 2012 at 9:27 PM

would never take nolan back. eternally grateful for what he contributed towards, but let’s face it….outside of the 18 yard box he might as well have been sat on the side of the pitch, such was his contribution

  • 75 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Oct 18, 2012 at 9:29 PM

Matty…I feel a bit guilty now. I was only playing with you. I’ve had that thrown at me recently and felt compelled to respond with a lengthy response, which wound me up to be honest(I like throwing quick snippets of rubbish out there, as you may have noticed :) ), and now I’ve done the same to you. Re-evaluate things I shall.

Humour aside, I generally like your posts. You clearly have thought about what you feel and aren’t afraid to change your “camp” depending on the issue, which is as it should be.

On style vs results – this issue makes me climb my fence higher than any other issue. Yes I want to see beautiful football, we all do. Would we be happy with an 8th – 15th place finish for that though? I would imagine there would be a lot of grumbling…a hell of a lot. From what I know of Pardews previous jobs, and tbh, most of it is based on articles since he’s been with us and reflecting on the past (not my own personal viewing), he is touted as a manager who likes his side to play attractive fluid football. I can only assume that he is being cautious. We’re not a low placed team that can afford to appease bad results with attractive performances, he’s playing it safe until he has confidence in what he sees. I’m willing to give him time to give us beautiful football and beautiful results. He really hasn’t been here that long, it’s just every week as a toon fan makes us feel we’ve aged a year – but that’s nothing new.

  • 76 Tonytoon73 // Oct 18, 2012 at 9:30 PM

Big pappa, has Ben arfa not been switched from midfield to a more forward role when he has scored?

  • 77 Big Pappa Cissé // Oct 18, 2012 at 9:33 PM

    @ Tony

Slightly yes, but I would still class him as a midfielder

  • 78 jawballsaswallwell // Oct 18, 2012 at 9:33 PM

All this lean, efficient business stuff is obviously all well and good, but it would have been a far easier sell if we hadn’t finished damnable top 6, bit inconvenient that for the Toon bean counters, me thinks!

Dont think anyone could complain about what nolan did for us especially in the fizzy pop he was a great player and captain even if he did puff like a steam train after an hour! Truth be told id rather of given him a 3 year contract and have him in the squad over gosling i know hes getting on abit but theres no harn having experince aswell as youth in the squad and cant help but feel in sime games we miss his fight

MFH…Sorry, confused your “hot news” bit….my bad. BandB has forced me to be a better poster. Well to be honest, a better man…or woman….let’s say a better being. Anything and everything I say from this day forth is a dedication to that great wise poster who will be sadly missed. To summarise, yes got me going good…..

Tony….We’ll see come the end of the season (are we even a 1/4 way through yet???). I expect Benny and Yo to chip in still. I do hear what you’re saying though, overall they do need to contribute more to the score board. At least we have that big commanding CB that Pardew needed…whoops, i’ll regret that one later.

Matty…..I was hoping it not to be the case and still am, but it does seem it’s only to keep Ba and Cisse happy. Both are strikers and both have played well on the left of a 4-3-3, but it would seem neither want to. Some say Pardew needs to grow some balls and that may be the case. But given Ba’s apparent insistence on playing up the top, I can’t blame Pardew for trying it….even if it is running a little thin now. I can imagine he’s sat there thinking “If I can just get it to work they’ll be deadly”.

Talking of long posts…anyone seen LYF lately? Very decent poster, hope I’ve just been missing him and we don’t have another escapee.

  • 81 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Oct 18, 2012 at 9:43 PM

  • 82 Jail for Ashley // Oct 18, 2012 at 9:44 PM

Although I think a direct swap for Cabaye was great business,Nolan would have been very handy to have around when you look at the amount of games Cabaye and Tiote miss,I also think he would have given a great deal of experience to these young Europa teams Pards likes to play, and to give him credit he has kept a very dignified silence about the offer he was given to stay, apart from his part in the AC affair I think he was a great servant to the club.

  • 83 jawballsaswallwell // Oct 18, 2012 at 9:46 PM

  • 84 89Norcal // Oct 18, 2012 at 9:49 PM

    @mattyNUFC,

Had to run out, but the situation with Ba and Cisse really isn’t a matter of selection. They are both center forwards with similar ability and benching either would alienate them, I’m sure of it. Cisse would be the more tolerant, he seems to have a better temperament, but Ba’s already shown his displeasure. Strikers need goals to stay happy.

  • 86 89Norcal // Oct 18, 2012 at 9:52 PM

In regards to subbing Ba and Cisse with each other in 433, what do we do right now?

1)Start the in-form Ba and risk frustration with Cisse? or..
2)Start Cisse to get him scoring and piss off Ba?

  • 87 beefman13 // Oct 18, 2012 at 9:52 PM

Nolans first season was poor to be fair and the reason no one came in for him to offer anywhere near the deal he had with us or he might have been off with duff baye martins etc same as nobody would have matched colos wages or jonas or enriques or bartons who all had pretty poor first seasons.

They stayed and had a point to prove and they did prove that point.

It doesnt really matterwhich way you cut it up, lets strip away all the palaver. Newcastle United failed badly to buy in two defenders to cover two positions that Pardew had identified. Lets leave aside Debuchy and Douglas – are we seriously supposed to believe that the 5th best club in England last year, offering european football this season, could not attract two other decent defenders, at a combined cost of say 12 million? Some posters said that I (and others ) were advocating a Man City approach for NUFC – rubbish!! As one poster said , its all about return on investment. Thats all well and good, but the 1st team had two weaknesses that needed to be addresses. Perhaps we will act in Jan, and Debuchy will be cheaper , and the season will be half over, but in reality, we failed the big transfer acid test in the summer, because we either got fixated with Douglas and Debuchy, or more likely ( given the apparent numbers of players on our list ) , we just didnt want to spend. If Ashley would like to get into the CL, there comes a point where he has to make a serious decision – do I spend money now, and improve the quality we have whilst that quality is here ( Cabaye, Ben Arfa etc ) or do I prevaricate to get the best discount. Success and prudence do not always go together, and no amount of comparisons with the old regime wasting our bucks on Michael Owen etc changes that.

  • 97 jawballsaswallwell // Oct 18, 2012 at 11:34 PM

@munster – I too struggle to see how it can be viewed any differently at the moment, but I also tend to think Ashley believes he can get there on his own terms even if it means forgoing this window of opportunity.

  • 99 Mister Tuff // Oct 19, 2012 at 12:18 AM

munster/jaw agree with your take on the situation.
If we start sliding down the league it is going to cost us millions in PL payouts. Taking a slight gamble in the summer to fork out an extra couple of million may have been the best investment the club could have made -plus it would indicate publicly a desire to progress.
I do find it difficult to believe that after finishing fifth -success /progress would be finishing 8th or 10th -I do not think a lot of fans would acknowledge that as a success. Having said that I still think several players will arrive in January -at some time an aspirational club will have to pay realistic prices for quality.

It’s called investment, smart investment. We have done pretty well so far with AC as example. Currently we have Tiote, Cabaye, HBA, Cisse who can be as good investment as AC. It’s called smart, it’s the best way to run good healthy company, not buying Zaha for 20m smart.
