The days of Newcastle paying big fees for players may be over, but Alan Pardew, the Newcastle manager is not so certain, and he says that could still be possible in the future.
Alan Pardew – big signings still possible a Newcastle
In his interview with the Evening Chronicle today, Alan was asked if there could still be a chance of a major signing in the future, and he had this to say:
“Of course there is, if we think we are getting value for money.” “There is no way we will sign an £8million player who is 28. I know that, so there is no point me looking at them.”
“But if there’s a 22-year-old at £11M who has potential and I can convince him there is a £30M player there, it could be different.”
“We still need to work within our budget and with the market we’ve got, we are probably on an even keel at the moment – with a good team.”
It seems that all the Newcastle owner Mike Ashley is after is value for money, and as Alan says he would like pay out around £11M if the value if the player could triple in a few years – who wouldn’t?
The good news earlier today was that it seems Graham Carr and the scouting staff are in high gear to scout players for January – and we’d love to see a couple of top defenders come in.
And then in the summer maybe a young striker that Newcastle are willing to pay out £11 for?
Come to think of it Newcastle brought in a certain Papiss Cisse for almost £10M last January, and Papiss has since scored 15 goals for Newcastle.
Sounds good to us.

Comment #42Tonytoon, we have had one of the greatest rises in football stature in the last three years from being relegated ( with a team of 350 international caps)
Lets say as been told DL sanctions signings then tiote santon ben arfa anita ba cisse bigi cabaye etc isnt to bad a track record is it, and bladdreing nolan carroll enrique barton has proved correct as well.
we have went from the near abyss to europe within three years one of the greatest achievments in prem league history. we are healthy, we have money to buy players with cash and we will do in january. good ones as well.
No players being bought on the never never as before and they just about always turned out to be duds. and on and on and on.
We at the toon now have found a brilliant formula i just dont get how you say he knows nowt about football business, he may not come across as the most likeable person but the club are speaking quite a bit now and thats what a lot wanted
business/football wise we are flying
Ive got to say imo you are miles off.

Not only do I think beefman would work for Llamearse but that he would quite happily sack the dear old Tea lady who’s been there for years just before her retirement just to save paying her a pension if Dastardly bidded him.

Comment #50Matty @29…What is this? Optimism? Negativity? Realism? People call me a fence sitter…..
MFH…What’s this about my hot bum? This is hardly the time or place good sir. Well done for not using a smiley, wouldn’t want people thinking your a little girly now, would we?
Tony…Bit harsh calling Pardew an idiot for working for Derek. He might now be a great boss, but it is a great job, better than any he has ever had. From the sounds of it, as far as the football side of things goes, he is left to do his job – which I suppose is great news seeing as the two upstairs are more concerned about the business end of things.

Comment #52Offkey….Decent interview…Liked this bit in particular…
“”Sunday we have to win 100%, but it’s OK because if we put Shola Ameobi on the pitch and he scores,” Santon joked of the striker’s seven goal career haul against the Wearsiders.”

Comment #53Tony….Not directed at me, but that hasn’t stopped me in the past. Didn’t Nolan want a nice long contract? Would that have been a great idea? He does get goals, absolutely, but how long will that keep happening and where would he play in our current team? It’s easy to say, look at him and what he does, but is it relevant to our current situation? For me, it’s a bit like people complaining now about selling Forster (you know, now he’s been “called up” to the England team), it’s all a bit far fetched imo.

Comment #54Tony in fairness i liked nolan, but you know as well as me he pushed for that move he wasnt forced out in any way, he wanted 5 year contract when 3 on top of his year left was offered which i think was a good deal, and if he really loved the toon as much as the money he would have stayed, truth is he would have been a sub more often than not and he knew it.

Comment #55Ibiza, in my opinion i would have give him the longer contract. I classed the lad on the same level as Gary Speed and he played till he was 38 and was still one hell of a player. RIP

Comment #56Tony….On Speed, indeed one hell of a player (RIP). Nolan’s saving grace was getting goals, apart from that he was and is on the decline. Maybe you’re right and he’ll keep it up for a fair few more years, time will tell. Where would you play him now and who would be benched?

Comment #59I think Matty touches on an interesting point re: contemplation of the unthinkable happening on Sunday…but although we have a fair share of fans who change opinions after every result, I would hazard a guess that neither a positive or negative result against the Germ Carriers would sway people into siding with or protesting against regimes.
The cynical timing of deliberatley leaking/releasing controversial deals is nothing new at NUFC and it is no coincidence that an international break and an extremely important away fixture were to follow the latest Wonga Sponsorship/Colour Purple furore and DL should show the fans more respect….I hope he gets his due rewards one day.
However, we will be taking part in this country’s most bitter provincial derby this Sunday….let’s put the barstewards to the sword again before returning to our other arguments! 😉

Comment #62Might probably just be me or does our manager saying only value for money deals will go through sort of echo his comments on the Debuchy deal?… I mean he admitted the agent gave us a figure but we wouldn’t negotiate Lilles price, kinda unsettling/ tapping him up. Plus we won’t sign an 8mill 28year old… Well if that’s the case then how do we get a mix and the kids learn, because lets face facts, if benny Cabaye, Ba and Krul haven’t got trophies here then they won’t stick around!

Comment #63Ibiza, ba and cisse up front normally dosnt work they have not much nous ie flick ons runs off the ball cohesion.,.
bit of a seagull is nolan picks up scraps in the box, .nolan maybe would not feed of them as well as he did carroll. ie ba n cisse.
Someone mentioned earlier that cisse is an instinct player split second decision and in the back of the net.
When he has time to think he can look a bit lost, and dosnt really know what to do.

Comment #65Andy in the past NUFC went for a lot of these 28/9/30 year olds who came here for their final big pay check and they very rarely worked.
DL owned up and said they are looking for value its a business and MA runs all his businesses with that proviso.
Get them at a good age get a good contract out of them move them on and replace, like as ivwe mentioned before what the gooners do.
it stops the players getting stale and we bring well scouted class players in hopefully which will be cheaper of course but NUFC will continue to grow finacially that way and have hungry players who want to do a job for us like the ones we have brought in the last three seasons
It has been stated thats what they want to do so it is clearly out there.

Comment #66Beefman….Nolan did us well, me personally, agree with how the club handled that one. I was just playing with my own question of where he would fit in now.
On the Cisse and Ba partnership, I’d love it to work, but it doesn’t seem to be, so I would rotate them, maybe the odd game together. Take away the idea that they don’t play well together (I refrained from using the word fact there), but we are somewhat short on Strikers, so why play our best 2 each game? 5 man midfield (whether that’s 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 or whatever) should help us control more and utilise our players. Works for me, I do also recognise 4-4-2 has its time, but that time isn’t every game.
Cisse will come good again, I have no doubt about that. He has come close a few times. Even the best striker in my living memory went through dry spells (although they are hard to remember with his normal goal scoring antics). I say bring back Shearer, hell, get Beardo back on the pitch.

….diplomacy…?? who knows, really.
that’s why i hate pigeonholing but at the same time i do appreciate conviction. it’s a tough game, no doubt this choosing allegiances. I think, for me personally, if you take football against my views on social and political issues, i tend to be very inquisitive, always questioning and no doubt that plays a role in the views i take with regards to all that is NUFC as well. while the inner fan tells me to remain optimistic it is very hard to overlook aspects that have frankly been done blatantly against the better will of the club. i think for the most part my views are pretty clear:
i support MA’s ‘vision’….not necessarily everything he does, by any means. since i started supporting newcastle i’ve always been proud of what we’ve been associated with; hard work, representative of blue-collar workers who physically put their bodies on the line. I appreciate that and whether MA has ulterior motives (selling for a profit, etc) when it comes to his ‘vision’ there is no other club in the world i’d rather associate myself with
I’ve yet to be fully convinced by Pardew and, without going as far as writing him off, I don’t see a substantial change in how I view him. I’ve never thought highly of him as a man and I’m not a particular fan of his management skills.
regardless of the result v sunderland i don’t think those views will sway substantially either way, but to assume it won’t sway many other fans is a bit off the mark. One needs to look no further than the hyperbolic posts muttered by many after game day (myself included, occasionally).
and i feel i’ve always stated if the style is there, because in the end this is all about entertainment, whichever way you look at it, i’ll be content. i remember being berated a few times last year and having folks rebut with ‘would you rather be a swansea who plays slick, passing football and be in mid-table or would you rather grind out the results?’ well, unequivocally i’d take style over league standing, because the difference between ourselves, NUFC and a swansea, is that we have the structures in place to push on from good football and a midtable finish. for the near future swansea will continue to cave to big prices for their better players. a lot of optimists said last year ‘europe is coming a year too soon.’ there’s an argument there, no doubt, but if success is not planned for something is woefully wrong with the people in our club. that’s what every sport club and franchise in the world aims for. i think the club is in a beautiful position currently. do i think we could’ve helped our chances MASSIVELY with a few new signings? no s*** i think that. but it is what it is and i am really rooting for pardew and hopes he can get this very, very talented squad to push on from last year’s success

Comment #72whew, that was some post….
ibiza, i think 99.999% of fans agree that a rotation between ba and cisse in the central role is the way to go. why pards hasn’t seen this yet is another major catalyst to my frustrations with him.
having said that, was i the only one who was impressed with cisse out on the wing? surprisingly so i was. I lamented pardew for putting him there pre-match but thought he did quite well before we reverted back to 442. he wasn’t crossing but, hey, which winger do we have that actually does that anyway? he held the ball up better than any other time he’s been on the pitch for us….i don’t think it’s the long-term solution but it wasn’t woeful by any means

Comment #75Matty…I feel a bit guilty now. I was only playing with you. I’ve had that thrown at me recently and felt compelled to respond with a lengthy response, which wound me up to be honest(I like throwing quick snippets of rubbish out there, as you may have noticed 🙂 ), and now I’ve done the same to you. Re-evaluate things I shall.
Humour aside, I generally like your posts. You clearly have thought about what you feel and aren’t afraid to change your “camp” depending on the issue, which is as it should be.
On style vs results – this issue makes me climb my fence higher than any other issue. Yes I want to see beautiful football, we all do. Would we be happy with an 8th – 15th place finish for that though? I would imagine there would be a lot of grumbling…a hell of a lot. From what I know of Pardews previous jobs, and tbh, most of it is based on articles since he’s been with us and reflecting on the past (not my own personal viewing), he is touted as a manager who likes his side to play attractive fluid football. I can only assume that he is being cautious. We’re not a low placed team that can afford to appease bad results with attractive performances, he’s playing it safe until he has confidence in what he sees. I’m willing to give him time to give us beautiful football and beautiful results. He really hasn’t been here that long, it’s just every week as a toon fan makes us feel we’ve aged a year – but that’s nothing new.

Comment #80MFH…Sorry, confused your “hot news” bit….my bad. BandB has forced me to be a better poster. Well to be honest, a better man…or woman….let’s say a better being. Anything and everything I say from this day forth is a dedication to that great wise poster who will be sadly missed. To summarise, yes got me going good…..
Tony….We’ll see come the end of the season (are we even a 1/4 way through yet???). I expect Benny and Yo to chip in still. I do hear what you’re saying though, overall they do need to contribute more to the score board. At least we have that big commanding CB that Pardew needed…whoops, i’ll regret that one later.
Matty…..I was hoping it not to be the case and still am, but it does seem it’s only to keep Ba and Cisse happy. Both are strikers and both have played well on the left of a 4-3-3, but it would seem neither want to. Some say Pardew needs to grow some balls and that may be the case. But given Ba’s apparent insistence on playing up the top, I can’t blame Pardew for trying it….even if it is running a little thin now. I can imagine he’s sat there thinking “If I can just get it to work they’ll be deadly”.
Talking of long posts…anyone seen LYF lately? Very decent poster, hope I’ve just been missing him and we don’t have another escapee.
