We had said earlier today that it would be great if Newcastle fans can applaud racist victim Danny Rose of Sunderland, before the game starts at the Stadium of Light on Sunday, and it would give some much needed positive publicity for racial equality.
A great shot of Shola Ameobi – has received racial abuse
Well there’s news coming through that a man has been arrested for an alleged racist comment on Facebook about Newcastle striker Shola Ameobi.
The man is a 43-year-old, from Washington, Tyne and Wear, and he was held in jail overnight on suspicion of racial harassment and has been bailed until November 28th.
Some remark was made about Shola on Facebook, and the offensive post has since been removed.
And this is the second time this year the Ameobi brothers have received racial slurs, as his younger brother, 20 year-old Sammy, was abused on Twitter by two teenagers earlier this year.
The teenagers got off lightly, and only received a warning from the police.
So it would be even more appropriate if applause is given for Danny Rose on Sunday and maybe also for Newcastle veteran Shola.
But there has to also be a concern that these racial episodes seem to be increasing in the game of football.
We hope that’s not the case.
