Newcastle will be bringing in a new center-back in January and we heard yesterday that there are seven center-backs on the list, and one of them has to be Douglas of FC Twente.
Douglas - Magpies can get good deal on this player
And it could be that the 24 year-old is top of the list for Newcastle, because with his contract running out in June he could be brought in for less than the £4M FC Twente wanted for the Brazilian in the summer.
If it’s one thing we know for certain, it’s that owner Mike Ashley likes a bargain and if Newcastle can get Douglas for say £2M less than he was worth three months ago, that could be a great for Newcastle, and his arrival at Newcastle would have been delayed only six months too.
Of course there are other decent center-backs who will be on the list, including Montpellier captain Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, who can play anywhere across the back four, and young 21 year-old Virgil van Dijk of FC Groningen, and Toby Alderweireld, Ajax’s excellent Belgium International center back.
But it’s the good deal Newcastle can get on Douglas that makes us think he could be top of the list at Newcastle.
What do you think?

Mbiwa seems the sensible choice. Young, fast, adaptable and on the French team. However, there seems to be something stopping us going for him.
My worry is that Douglas is 2 million cheaper than 6 months ago and will be another 2 million cheaper in 6 months time so they might just wait.

Harley – if Douglas’ value keeps dropping by £2m what kind of re-sale value will he have?
That’s important to Mike you know.

Wynsleap.
What steveno said. He becomes a free agent in the summer so we may just wait.
I still think Douglas would be a good signing. I haven’t really seen him play but he seems very highly rated.

We didn’t get him in the summer because he refused to enter into negotiations with other clubs and opted to run out his contract. It isn’t going to be a case of putting in a couple of million pound bid and twente will send him packing, why would he leave in January when he can wait until the summer and go to whichever club he a) prefers to go to, B) offers the greater European incentives be it champs league or Europa, c) offers the best wages and d) offers the greatest signing on fee for both him and his agent… When you don’t have to pay for a player touted as a ‘quality cb’ then the competition heats up when there on a free and providing a big signing on fee is one way of getting them through the door.

We didn’t get him in the summer because he refused to enter into negotiations with other clubs (or advanced negotiations as let’s face it, his agent would have spoke to all the clubs interested) and opted to run out his contract. It isn’t going to be a case of putting in a couple of million pound bid and twente will send him packing, why would he leave in January when he can wait until the summer and go to whichever club he a) prefers to go to, B) offers the greater European incentives be it champs league or Europa, c) offers the best wages and d) offers the greatest signing on fee for both him and his agent… When you don’t have to pay for a player touted as a ‘quality cb’ then the competition heats up when their on a free and providing a big signing on fee is one way of getting them through the door.

Mbiwa seems quite small to pair with Colo in the middle of the defence?

Mbiwya is the man we should go for he is a future superstar . I would pay a good whack 4 him too. We should get wheels in motion now we have waited too long

seriously we need a STRONG centre back as a competitior/backup for Saylor and Collocini
Williamson – championship quality. One of the tallest player who NEVER won any header. and he is SLOW like a snail
Perch- as a midfield OK, as a defender = disaster
