When the players for the main part in today’s game behaved themselves, and the managers behaved themselves too for a change – the Sunderland fans showed themselves up, with some unsavoury chanting at Steven Taylor when he came on, and the chants were in very poor taste.
Yohan Cabaye – after scoring Newcastle’s goal after just three minutes
When Steven Taylor came on for Fabricio Coloccini in the second half – the Sunderland fans started to chant:
“Steven Taylor, we wish you were dead”
The Black Cats fans surely could have thought up something less provocative than that chant, and even manager Martin O’Neill didn’t like it and objected to his own fans chanting it.
This is what Martin said after the game when told about the chants after the game:
“I didn’t know that. That would be poor, in very poor taste, if that’s the case.” “I would be disappointed to have heard that.”
“The Taylor comments didn’t figure in my team talk, but some of the players had passed comment about it.” “He’s absolutely entitled to his opinion. I am delighted he made their bench.”
Newcastle’s 10 men contained Sunderland for long periods in today’s game, and it was just a little unlucky that Sunderland got an equaliser after 85 minutes, and even then it was a Newcastle own goal by Demba Ba.
Steven’s comments were made with tongue in cheek – and Alan Pardew came out and said some of the Sunderland players could make the Newcastle team, including Steven Fletcher, Craig Gardner and Adam Johnson.
Adam was born in Sunderland, but supported Newcastle as a youngster and was on the Magpies’ books as a 10 year-old, and is now on loan at the Stadium of Light from Manchester City for the season.
With some racial prejudice seeming to creep more into the game of football every week, it seems that fans should be very wary of the chants they come up with.
And finally, it was good to see Danny Rose come through the game, after the trials and tribulations the youngster had to endure in Slovakia during the England U21 game.

He still gives his all to the team and is not afraid to tackle. He becomes less wild but that doesn’t negatively affect how he plays as much as you think. When he gets carded he plays more wisely and doesn’t shy away from any action.

Comment #123He’s not really a mackem because he’s only on loan – that’s why I’ll say Danny Rose looked a very decent player. Him and HBA had a really good battle and 10/10 to Benny for getting stuck in. Even though both players were committing fouls there was no play acting or animosity. Well done to the pair of them.

I agree that tiote is and has been a vital player for us from the moment he signed, but, and im not trying to make it a big arguement, but i can see where everyones coming from today
No one is (i dont think) questioning his commitment but hes been like a rabid animal this season and in all honesty that red card has been coming for a few games now, norwich he could/should of walked and he was only on the pitch 10 mins!
Hopefully today was a wake up call for him and he can go back to using that controlled aggresion we know and love him for but atm he’s a liability and whats with the paddy’s after getting booked against manure he was booked purely for his reaction rather than the foul and that is when he becomes a liability

I know it wont affect his game to much but I guarentee there are times he will have to back out of a tackle or two when booked. I love Cheick just as much as the next guy but if he truly wants to be world class he needs to work on that aspect of his game. We don’t want him to be the Geordie version of Cattermole now do we 🙂

Comment #127If the truth be told Tiote wasn’t as effective last season as he was in his first season. He’s relying too much on reputation and not enough on performance and as other posters have pointed out he’s been a sending off waiting to happen this season. His theatricals before he got booked against ManU were farcical. Pards needs to sort him out.

He still is the best DM in the league. I agree with you two that he has been too aggressive in the last few games but it’s something that can be controlled as we saw last season where he was fantastic and didn’t have an awful booking record. People just don’t know how good he is and what he brings to our team.

Comment #131When Fabricio came off due to his niggle we were instantly weakened, this is the reason we need a top centre-half. Taylor is not a top centre-half, he is a good squad player on par with Williamson and Perch. If we pair two of these players we will be in trouble, we can get away with it if one is paired with the great Coloccini!

Yes but getting booked has no advantages whatsoever so why risk it ? . The annoying thing is that he does not need to be so aggressive for him to be just as effective

Because when he gets away with it he enforces his image as a tough guy and a brute. He thrives on the idea of dominating and kicking everyone’s arse.

Yeah, he looked real tough walking down that tunnel like. Just look at Perch, he made one of the best crunching tackles I have seen since Scott Parker on Joe Cole and guess what he didn’t even get booked. There is a thin line between hard and reckless and I hope Tiote can learn from his mistakes

Comment #136tiote is now a liability to the team, the next 3 games he misses will show we dont need him, wont be bothered if some top 4 team come in for him in the new year, get rid, he cost us 2 points today, when ameobi went straight down the tunnel when subbed I think it was to give tiote a right justified earful, a***hole

Comment #137As daft as it was that Tiote reacted, if the referee did his job properly and pulled Colback up straight away it would have taken the edge off Tiotes rage and we’d have got the foul. How long does it take to be grabbing hold of him to be awarded the foul these days? Awful reffing all the way through, but it’s most weeks and has been for years it seems.

Comment #138Well, we got the foul anyway but without the frustrated kicking.
Saw a pic on twitter of both Tiote’s tackle side by side with Larsson’s one. Studs up chest/neck height… Any need? No.

Comment #139Some of you are more harsh on Tiote than Martin Atkinson! It was an incredibly soft red for me, Tiote looked like he was anticipating the bounce to boot the ball down field. That was a reputation-influenced call there. I usually like Martin but he was awful today.
Pardew’s subs were good I thought, Shola looked unhappy but Perch came up big to slow Scumderland down in the midfield. Simpson’s defense was massive.
Taylor gave us instant energy at the back to hold off, just unfortunate about the Ba OG.

Comment #140off topic, but someone on this thread has again put Marveaux in their ‘starting XI’
why Marveaux? if he was any good, he would play in so many more games than he has done to date. i say drop Cisse for a couple of games and go BenArfa-Ba-Obertan.

Comment #143Better yet Kets, let’s offload Ba on a free ASAP for scoring that OG and sack Pards for not subbing him off before it happened. Outrageous!

Comment #144Bloody hell Kets, I try to stay out of your ridiculous, fantastical comments but you really are a naive little sod. Willo was top drawer yesterday, best I’ve seen him play, ever perhaps, but certainly in a long time, was calmness personified. I appreciate you’re entitled to your view but for fcuk’s sake think before you speak man!

Comment #146Jesper- back to work and Costa bound. Gave Krul 6 because he had little to do. Collo’s presence bought the best out of those around him. Sunderland were pretty clueless. Agree with comments though on Rosé who showed what were missing in attacking sense. Have a good one.

Comment #147In regards to tiote. I can’t help but think the contact was minimum, and if he wasn’t being pulled back he wouldn’t of missed judged the tackle so poorly.
Colo was an absolute warrior
