When the players for the main part in today’s game behaved themselves, and the managers behaved themselves too for a change – the Sunderland fans showed themselves up, with some unsavoury chanting at Steven Taylor when he came on, and the chants were in very poor taste.
Yohan Cabaye – after scoring Newcastle’s goal after just three minutes
When Steven Taylor came on for Fabricio Coloccini in the second half – the Sunderland fans started to chant:
“Steven Taylor, we wish you were dead”
The Black Cats fans surely could have thought up something less provocative than that chant, and even manager Martin O’Neill didn’t like it and objected to his own fans chanting it.
This is what Martin said after the game when told about the chants after the game:
“I didn’t know that. That would be poor, in very poor taste, if that’s the case.” “I would be disappointed to have heard that.”
“The Taylor comments didn’t figure in my team talk, but some of the players had passed comment about it.” “He’s absolutely entitled to his opinion. I am delighted he made their bench.”
Newcastle’s 10 men contained Sunderland for long periods in today’s game, and it was just a little unlucky that Sunderland got an equaliser after 85 minutes, and even then it was a Newcastle own goal by Demba Ba.
Steven’s comments were made with tongue in cheek – and Alan Pardew came out and said some of the Sunderland players could make the Newcastle team, including Steven Fletcher, Craig Gardner and Adam Johnson.
Adam was born in Sunderland, but supported Newcastle as a youngster and was on the Magpies’ books as a 10 year-old, and is now on loan at the Stadium of Light from Manchester City for the season.
With some racial prejudice seeming to creep more into the game of football every week, it seems that fans should be very wary of the chants they come up with.
And finally, it was good to see Danny Rose come through the game, after the trials and tribulations the youngster had to endure in Slovakia during the England U21 game.

(if you’re still about)
I know what you mean about injuries forcing Pardew’s hand and dictating how the team is set up. However I would say that we have started games this season too slowly, whereby it looks as though we are letting teams come on to us.
I’ve regularly said that we’d have been a lot better if we had a settled back line for example but when we seem to play we don’t really press on in the first 20 minutes.
Today we came racing out of the blocks and this surprised me. Nobody is influencing me, I call it as I see it. Is there anything you mean in particular?
Re Tiote: What people say about his reputation is something I agree with, that’s my opinion. Perhaps if it had been Santon who had been in that position for example, the ref wouldn’t have brandished the red. Could he really see studs up from his position? I think the rep of players has a place in referee minds.

Comment #10Really clever funny chant that one the unwashed made up about Saylor, so witty, i have no idea why anybody would ever think about following such a shitty club when there is such a massive fantastic instituation up the road, i swear i struggle to understand some people.

But yea they’re scum bags and before that silly challenge we were all over them. The return at at James will teach them who’s the better side.

Comment #13Ashton – lol away but what I am talking about is his shocking disciplinary record, if you think its acceptable, adds to his game or doesn’t in any way hamper the amount of games he can be selected in then this argument is a lost cause.
Just getting a yellow quietens him down, and if you reckon it doesn’t, then why is he getting them in the first place?

Comment #14I want clubs to start taking chants more seriously.
The odd gesture or rant from a single fan can easily be punished by banning them for life from games.
If whole sections of the crowd sign abuse dont just given them a 10k fine…..give them a 3 game period they have to play behind closed doors…away fans only even.
If that doesn’t work bring in a points deduction.

You said he cost us games. But this is the first time he has been sent off(wrongly) in the league for us! So other than today when has he directly “cost us a game”? When he gets 5 yellows he get suspended by not playing and losing when he isn’t playing doesn’t mean that he is “costing us games”!!!!!!!! It just projects how good and effective he is.

it was something about jimmy saville…guessing something about the latest stories on him being applied to one of the teams/players
And just in general too, there has been a lot of problems reported the past few weeks, chanting from leeds fans, man utd and liverpool fans, etc.
It does ruin the game for people who are offended b such things and people wouldn’t accept it on the street.

I think we agree about Tiote. In my report I try to write neutrally going through the game from start to finish, although that is only part of my posts. I then give my perspective on the game about the players, who played well, where we were good etc.

I think you could also say that some of those yellows which lads to him being suspended have won us points too.
Bringing somebody down to prevent a dangerous attack could have won us 3 points so I know what you mean.
Today was poor by him, a harsh red i feel but a needlessly risky tackle in this current climate.
But what he does need to do is cut out the needless yellows and fouls he gives away. A good tackler should rarely give away free kicks, especially around the box as it puts your team in danger from the set play.
In defence of tiote cabaye is quite rash and gives away a lot of fouls as well.
Tiote though just hasn’t seemed himself this season, he is just as tough as last year but he seems to be leaving his foot in a bit and could easily have had another red if refs had wanted to.

Comment #24The scum responded to taylor’s accurate assessment of their team earlier in the week by wishing death on him today.
It was a silly challenge by tiote today and probably cost us 2 points. And he’ll be missed against west brom as that’s a potential six pointer.
He’s a quality player but he’s looked awful since coming back from injury. Looked in the other game like he wanted to inflict pain. Today’s challenge was stupid and unnecessary.

it was the one ed wrote about in this article.
There was another where one set of fans (couldn’t tell who) sang something about jimmy saville. Not sure what they were signing so don’t know who it was aimed at or who sang it but i’m guessing from the jimmy saville comments it was in bad taste (to put it lightly)

The worst chants have been in Old Firm games and though they’ve been punished it is always that little bit on the light side so it carries on so sectarianism is still seen as okay. I think Gers fans are the worst, but Hoops are close behind. Secarianism, racism, etc., The way t deal with it is the way you suggest. Closed doors. Problem is clubs then are heavily punished for their nutters… better life bans for the ‘fans’.
Previous thread and discussion on Tiote.
Tiote has had 27 yellows and one red since he arrived according to BBC. He has also been injured for various periods so he is averaging roughly one yellow every other game. In the end the balance is between his presence on the pitch and the problems caused by his disciplinary record. That is not an easy call.

I think the chant to taylor won’t have bothered him. It was in poor taste, but was in response to him saying they had a bad team and there players couldnt get in our 11.
Racist or any other prejudice chanting is much more offensive as it is directed at a player for no good reason, just a hatred for a certain group of people.
At least this chanting was just a response to him having a go, not totally mindless but still poor taste.

yeh chants like that have no place in football
and yes, ban the nutters but it’s hard to pick out exactly who is chanting what if you have 50,000 chanting all at once.
If you have individuals making gestures or getting on the pitch a life an is easy to do, can clearly see the moron.
But hopefully by banning all fans from a couple of games it will make the idiots (obviously still have a few who wont learn) think twice, and it might also encourage clubs to increase stewarding and some fans might report more and stop it themselves.

Comment #40I thought the ref was fair, just very poor.
He missed two obvious corners, one for each of us, the red card as soft, but I can understand why he gave it, anything that looks bad is a red these days and he just gave some weird free kicks.
He gave one to us for ben arfa wrestling with mcclean, he also gave a few to them for no good reason.
I just don’t think he is up to much.
