There were unsavory chants made by Sunderland supporters when Steven Taylor came on the field yesterday, and now police are also investigating some racial abuse from a Sunderland fan against Newcastle striker Demba Ba.
Steven Taylor smiles at Steven Fletcher yesterday – late in the game
Safe to say the Sunderland fans didn’t exactly cover themselves in glory yesterday, and their chants of “Stephen Taylor – We wish you were dead” were quickly admonished after the game by Martin O’Neill.
But it seems there was alleged abuse aimed at Senegalese striker Demba Ba by a Sunderland fan, and it seems the abuse could be seen on some footage broadcast on Sky Sports, and the local Sky Tyne and Wear has passed the information and evidence onto Northumbria Police, who are now investigating the claims.
The police are very good at following up on these alleged abuses, and we expect an arrest very quickly.
A Northumbria Police spokesman said:
“There was one report of racist language having been used by a supporter in one area of the stadium – enquiries into this report are ongoing.”
Steven Taylor’s abuse was for his comments that no Sunderland player could get into the Newcastle side, but on yesterday’s display Steven was close to the mark.
Sunderland lacked penetration and found it hard to create decent chances against a 10 man Newcastle side, after Tiote had been given his marching orders after only 25 minutes.
But for that sending off, Newcastle would seem to have walked this game, as they looked so much better than Sunderland in those first 25 minutes.
Fifteen arrests were made yesterday, and six of them coming in a planned police operation in the morning before the early kick-off of the game at 1:30 pm, but to be fair the police said there were very few problems inside the stadium, and the majority of fans from both sides were well behaved.
The Sunderland supporters yesterday were probably frustrated, as it was obvious that Newcastle, at least at the moment, have a much better side than Sunderland.
There’s not much doubt about that.

Comment #1I really don’t get this racism thing. Is there a team in the league that doesn’t have players from all corners of the globe and varying in colour? What’s the issue? Do these “fans” boo and chant against their own players? They need to grow up. If you can’t think of anything better than the colour of a players skin to give them a hard time, maybe you need to have a re-think or just shut up and cheer your own players. Fools (this is across the board – not just the seemingly few scum fans).
So….3 days to Bruges……Who does everyone expect to see feature?

Comment #6After their own player Danny Rose was abused earlier in the week it is amazing that any Sunderland supporter would even think of uttering any abuse to another player, just shows the intelligence level of some people. Also the Saylor abuse was unwarranted, its just a game for goodness sake.
Thought the toon played well for a 10 men side against the Sunderland 13…..the ref and the crowd. MOD commentator didn’t think Tiote’s foul was that bad to warrant a sending off, but the pundits after did???

Comment #7I think both lots of abuse are shocking and both should be dealt with pronto. To wish a player dead is appaling; those chanting it should hang their heads in shame.
