West Brom manager Steve Clarke joined Newcastle as the Assistant manager to Ruud Gullit, when the Dutchman was appointed the Newcastle manager, after Kenny Dalglish was fired early in the 1998-1999 season.
Steve Clarke – West Brom manager and former Newcastle coach
Ruud only lasted one season on Tyneside, and was fired about a year into the job, after Newcastle were beaten 2-1 in the home game at St. James’ Park against Sunderland, and he had left Alan Shearer out of the starting line-up for that game .
Gullit was fired by then Chairman Freddy Shepherd immediately after the game that very wet night in Newcastle – it rained cats and dogs throughout the game .
But Steve Clarke stayed on at Newcastle and worked with Bobby Robson, who was brought in to manage Newcastle, who at the time were second bottom of the league with just 2 points in September of 1999.
Steve has said a number of times he learned a lot about football management from Bobby, and he talked today in the local press about Newcastle’s legendary manager:
“I was lucky to work with Bobby for a year and I took a lot from the way he dealt with and managed the players.” “He was great to me because he knew I was a young coach who wanted to learn and he sat me in on some of the meetings when he was one-to-one with a player.”
“He would have me there to watch and observe and see how he spoke to and dealt with players and that was absolutely invaluable for me.” “It was just his manner and his way of getting the best out of players. As a manager there is not one way to get the best out of a number of different people.”
“There are a number of different ways to get the best, and Bobby seemed to have the gift of being able to recognise and understand what sort of motivational tool he had to use at that time.”
And Steve didn’t stop at praising Bobby Robson, and he had some good words to say about our current manager Alan Pardew, who of course won the Premier League Manager of the Year and the LMA Manager of the Year awards for last season, when Newcastle finished in 5th place – the highest we had finished since Bobby was managing the club.
Clarke continued:
“I thought they were fantastic last season.” “I would say it is the best team since that Sir Bobby team that did really well. “They came out of that into a period that was a little more rocky and now they’re trying to get that stability back. “If you can get stability at any club then it makes it easier for the people who are trying to make it successful.”
We still hope Newcastle can be fantastic this season, but we’ve got to start winning games rather than just drawing them, and hopefully, we can start a winning streak tomorrow against Steve Clarke’s side West Brom, who have looked a good side so far this season.
We need the win tomorrow.

Yo
Vety true that morrison lad has a cracking pass on him and cross and has a decent shot on him from distance santon is going to have his work cut out down that side! Good job he’s turned out to be a cracking player!
Is it jerome thomas who also plays for brom? Not a bad player either and they have there own powerhouse in CM aswell with that mulumbu lad
Hyphen very true mate like i said hopefully he’ll get some game time and prove my doubts wrong, he seems to have all the attributes but has failed to put them together im yet to be convinced on the lad but would love to see him come good consitantly
Played great the other night but the odd good game for me is not enough from him not in his second season tbh we’d of been better so far sticking with routledge not trying to slate ober but he needs to up his game to hit a consistant level and i just dont buy the whole confidence spin

Aye all them plus dont forget about Brunt and Dorrans both could hurt us
I would be shocked if WBA dont try to do exactly what we did to them last season and hit us on the break

Comment #5they can have any manager in the world; but if they’re don’t have Paul Scharner in their 11, they ain’t gonna win 🙂
2-1 tomorrow i think, Cabaye finding the net again, with Ben Arfa chipping in.

ahh i do mate, the last 2 europa games, even the home game against atromitos hes played well becasuse hes ran past people and that.on his bad days it looks like he hasnt got the confidence to do any of those things.
maybe the intensity of the premier league affects his game. i think this season is make or break for the lad like young sammy is already as good as him with probably more potential and 3 years younger

Forgot about brunt and dorrans! When you look at it WBA have a decent team tbf!
Lets just hope we start the game properly and have none of this pissing about for 20 mins before we decide to turn up
First league match back at SJP though (not that it ever left) hopefully the place will be buzzing

Yup make or break season and i think he knows it! I think our intrest in ince (was it £4mil?) shows were looking for players push starting spots and if your not doing that i think they’ll be shown the door can see the same bieng said for gosling, possibly marv n vuckic too

If only – lets just hope the footballing masterclass we gave them at the Hawthorns last season is fresh in their minds and scares them off.
Looking forward to getting back to my seat, sick of these pitch side Europa match tickets i’ve been stuck with.

Comment #12On Obertan – I think if we do choose to transfer list him at the end of the season (personally i doubt it), i think we’d be to get our money back. If he chooses to stay in England i think there’ll be a few PL teams interested for around 3m£. The likes of Swansea, Villa or perhaps one of the newly promoted sides.
However, personally i’d like to keep him. I like him and definitely think there’s more to come.

Comment #14Would really like to see the toon attack them from the whistle, put them on the back foot and KEEP them there. WE are at home and there is absolutely nothing more likely to get the crowd baying than to go for the oppositions throat, from the off.
We have a very good back four, but our midfield has the potential to be even better and our strikers are a class above anything WBA can put on the field. Why can’t we just go for them from the off, rattle them, shake their confidence?
This IS SJP – it is OUR stadium; come here, enjoy the atmosphere, but leave a defeated, beaten, team. We are the GEORDIES!! Bring it on

id have santon and fergie in the team, obertan sammi and fergie were the stand out players, id only put obertan slightly ahead of sammi because hes played more games, give sammi a couple more starts in the europa league first.
depends on how pardew sets his team up tomorrow formation wise as to who i would pick

All my staff want NUFC shirts, scarves – They understand the passion. I am only in UK for 2 weeks, but will be there tomorrow, with my son, cheering on MY team lol.

Comment #31Santon is improving and will be back in the full italian squad soon. Ferguson is forcing himself into contention and Guti had better watch out. Obertan is beginning to show the promise he has and in my view will push Benny into the middle were he really wants to play.
Bigirama has the game to make the defensive central midfield position his own with a bit more experience which Pardew to his credit is doing.
Samiobi is also going to be a top player and again Pardew is giving these boy’s the time to develop their games with patience and careful management of their use in the first team.
Pardew is looking to the future and in my view doing a very, very good job of making us a force for many years to come.

Out of all those games liverpool are the most out of form team on there why settle for a draw? There no longer the force they were everyone else is starting to relise this and go for them especially at anfield

Comment #33Pardew will be great for you too Clark! By giving the game playing his hail mary 442 instead of the much better 433.
Last seaeon we played our best game in the whole season against WBA and we used 433 that game. We will play 442 tomorrow and we will play like sh/t and lose and Pardew will blame it on suspensions and euorpa league.
