Hope this signals the end of Gutierrez as a winger and the awful 4-4-2 formation!!!
2 Big Pappa Cissé // Oct 28, 2012 at 7:30 PM
Chelsea loaning out Lukaku seems to be a master stroke. I thought he would fade away on the bench at Chelski but he looks a real handful at 19 and would give Caroll a run for his money.
3 JP...from The Rock // Oct 28, 2012 at 7:39 PM
Gutierrez has been awful for a few games and his passing is always very disappointing in every game and costing us our attacking momentum. He tracks back and defends like his life depends on it but he should play when we are playing against a stronger team to win us the free-kicks more. Against WBA and the like we should utilize Fergie /Sammy / Obertan from the start.
4 Super Magpie // Oct 28, 2012 at 7:42 PM
People forget we played 4-3-3 today. I thought it was the wrong players tbf. West Brom were good today, people underestimate them.
They were very unlucky today and deserved the win more than us IMO.
We need to improve drastically next week if we are to win at Anfield.
5 beefman13 // Oct 28, 2012 at 7:44 PM
AP, you are honest enough to say we did not deserve the win, i think that as well, but three points will show on the prem table and thats all that matters.
Thing is it is the wrong team selection for a home game at SJP, even b4 the game it brought me down, i mentioned b4 no width at home is just not on, no crosses in to the box when we have players sitting on the bench who apparently can peel an orange with their left foot?
I am sorry but jonas should not be an automatic for me off course workrate but for me stops our game flowing and offers no forward threat, perch also dosnt offer much evdn though he has improved, he shouldnt be playing if fit midfielders are ready ie anita
We scraped by today and we wont do much better against anyone else unless we are more forward thinking, we are looking average but we neednt if we played to our strengths, width we can do with fergie and its time to freshen up with adam campbell, no doubts at all.
Players have not a divine right to be in the team, AP has to sort that.
6 Super Magpie // Oct 28, 2012 at 7:51 PM
Beefman
I totally agree with that.
7 tequilamag // Oct 28, 2012 at 7:51 PM
Super Magie, will hold my hands up to that one, West Brom were much better than I expected. Don`t agree they deserved the win. A draw for me would have been a fairer result. Thought Sami and Ober played well. possibly helped by coming on against a tiring team. Ober ca`t be far off from getting a start, think he is much improved from last season.
If Ba is going to be out then I think we can see more of the 433 formation people are so desperate for.
8 Ashton // Oct 28, 2012 at 7:55 PM
Can’t believe we got outpassed and dominated by that WBA midfield at home. None of them would get in our first XI so how the hell can they pass the ball better than us in such a conclusive fashion is beyond me.
Our players are confused and don’t know what they are doing on the pitch and we play with no purpose or style. And the reason for that is because Pardew wants us to be an “unpredictable” side. He has achieved that in fact he has achieved that so much that even our own players can’t predict how they are playing!!
And he want’s us to be an “unpredictable” side because Sir Alex advised him to do so. It’s actually quite funny how credulous our manager is. Protip Pardew: Don’t base your job around a competitor’s advice. Basic stuff really but our manager doesn’t seem to grasp that.
I’m happy right now because the fans are not really appreciating the shower of sh)t they are witnessing week in and week out. And if he doesn’t do anything about it well I don’t care how long of a contract he got if the fans don’t want he to manage us he WON’T.
9 jawballsaswallwell // Oct 28, 2012 at 7:59 PM
I thought we’d play well today, but in all honesty we’ve been sub par in the league all season. 9 games in and we have shown little and lie tenth. On the other hand Santon is looking great, Ba and Cisse both scored and Obertan continues to frustrate but is clearly gifted and improving. This team has much more to offer than that workmanlike stuff, it’s puzzling, but it was a fantastic feeling when the winner went in.
10 tequilamag // Oct 28, 2012 at 7:59 PM
Ashton, if you think Pardew is going to get sacked you are even more deluded than I thought.
11 Ashton // Oct 28, 2012 at 8:01 PM
Also Pardew blaming European football and “tiredness” after every game is just insulting to the fans and their intelligence.
12 JP...from The Rock // Oct 28, 2012 at 8:02 PM
What pisses me off the most when we see us play is our constant loss of possesion. The only players that are decent at keeping the ball with their passing and holding are: Colo,Saylor HBA, BA, Cisse, Ameobi and young Fergie, Bigi and Sammy. That’s just not good enough if we want to be a top 6 side every season. All the other players are constantly giving it away even Cabaye. He is supposed to be one of our better passes and he is way out of form this season. Gutierrez is by far our worse passer of the ball. He does great at holding it up though. Santon is still learning and is getting better. Anita the same but I expected slightly better but still too early for him. Tiote this season is shockingly poor. He is getting sent off, non stop yellows, terrible back-passes, ball watching and our most out of form player at the moment. Simpson always looks uncomfortable for me and clueless when on the ball. Always plays the typical long ball. Willo is too ordinary though solid. He just keeps lumping long balls to nowhere as does Krul though he is improving this season in playing it short sometimes.
In general we don’t know how to keep the ball, pass and move at the same time. When we somehow do manage to do that we usually score. So that’s what is most frustrating because we have the team to perform really well yet this season we are playing poorly and scraping wins against lesser opposition apart from Bordeaux.
Pardew should give a few players a right kick in the bum to start them into gear and to look before you pass, and when you do pass move into space and play some one-twos ffs!
PS. please play the short throw in for a bloody change and at least get the ball over the first man in corners!

25 Big Pappa Cissé // Oct 28, 2012 at 8:24 PM
What a contrast there was today and the away performance against WBA last season. We went from slick passing 4-3-3 with Cabaye, Ben Arfa, Ba & Cisse playing like a team to an ultra defensive and boring 4-4-2 which has been very lucky to pick up results this season. We can’t keep getting late or flukey goals for much longer and I hope Pardew can find a formation that brings the best out of our players.
Also I would love to know what Fergie has to do to get a start over Gutierrez like ? , seemingly an assist a game isn’t good enough. Just look at Raheem Sterling at Liverpool, that’s what can happen if we take a chance and actually start players on merit rather than their name or “hard work”. Does my head in
26 FatmanJoe // Oct 28, 2012 at 8:29 PM
People were Sending death threats to him and his daughter and that’s why he wanted out.
Don’t think people will send death threats to him because of a few dull performances.
But like I said – any manager can be sacked if they drop points and pardew is no different.
27 jawballsaswallwell // Oct 28, 2012 at 8:29 PM
I for one will be far from happy with Pards and his crew if after another 10 -15 games he still hasn’t manged to get more more out of this talented squad. It’s hard to imagine this form continuing though, then again, it’s hard to emulate last seasons form, which is clearly what we want.
28 Dannyo // Oct 28, 2012 at 8:31 PM

MA doesn’t care about results.
Strong possibilites of wanting AP sacked.
AP is loosing it.
The list goes on bud.
For me, there are a big ammount of reasons why things are like they are this season, and it’s easily defendable in my view.
It’s not a great start, but it’s solid.
I could go through that list, but i’m not sure i want to. It’s not gonna change people anyway.
29 magpie6699 // Oct 28, 2012 at 8:32 PM
So many players were off today – Cabaye, Guti, even Benny – we were second best in midfield and couldn’t pass wind without missing! Lucky is an understatement. However, tbf they didn’t stop working and trying and we did create some opportunities right to the end. And West Brom rode their luck a bit last season, I think.
30 yorkymag // Oct 28, 2012 at 8:34 PM
Not sure we played 442 today ? shola was a right winger most of the time!! and Ba lost ever high ball hit towards him ,the one time Shola came in as a front. Two we scored.
Biggest problem for me is Ben arfa playing too deep and cab doing the job of two perch was awful just awful today.if he I a premier league midfielder the pope isn’t a catholic

We played 4-3-3 today mate. Ba in the middle, HBA left, Shola right.
The Gutti, Perch and Cabs in the middle.
Shola deserved a start, and AP went for experience in my view when starting Perch for DM.

Ashton I have been going to SJP I know exactly what the fans are capable of, Jack Charlton didn`t hang about long when the fans got on his case.
I don`t get that vibe about Pardew at all. There is always a minority of “fans” who like to have a twist, even when Keegan was manager and we were playing the best football I ever saw there was always a few having a pop at something. That`s just the nature of some supporters.
Don`t confuse natural frustration at a game not going well as something more than it is.
I appreciate you are on a mission to educate the blog and if only you were not so misunderstood we would all think your way.
Not going to happen mate your wasting your time.

Exam Question: a) Toon play well with 10 men against Sunderland and get an unlucky draw thanks to a deflection / own goal. Everyone says what a good team we are with a good manager. b) 1 week later, Toon play poorly but win 2-1 against an excellent West Brom team thanks to a deflection. Everyone says we are a poor team with a poor manager.
Discuss.

42 newcben // Oct 28, 2012 at 8:45 PM
Iv said it before and I will say it again I really don’t rate Pardew as a manager, even last season I said it when flying high because we never really player that well except Utd at home when Pardew admitted he just copied Steve Kean’s tactics and WBA away.
I really think this old skl English style of thumping it long and being really direct is cutting out the strongest area of our team being our midfield. We need it on the deck, gone are the days of slow boys who don’t have the technique in our team Bowyer, Butt, Nolan etc. There is defo a time and place where we can stick on target men and hoof it long but that should be our plan b, even shola is good with the ball at his feet.
We have players who can really play and play at pace. Our squad is so European we need to play a more skillful game as we have the ability to do so even our CB’s can play football with collo and staylor. We sit too much in defense giving their players enough time to pick the pass and don’t get in the oppositions faces enough.
I just don’t think we are playing to our strengths. The one time we did last yr WBA we played quick tempo and kept ball at feet.

Still however its the mark of a good side who wins when they are play poorly Man U have done it countless times scoring late.
In all honesty we don’t know what happens in training so maybe Pardew is trying to mold the team into a more modern side like how the top team with ball at feet…..I don’t want us to change things because we do need stability I would of just rather it was originally under a different manager. I will always be fully behind the team and who ever in charge what ever I feel personally that will be put aside.

Jammy Ameobi!
Newcastle 2 West Bromwich Albion 1
On a day when Newcastle’s big guns mostly misfired but they looked to have taken a point despite an under-par performance, a late piece of outrageous fortune handed them a first league success in four games.
Deep into the four minutes of added time, Sammy Ameobi tried his luck with a shot that deflected wickedly off the back of fellow substitute Papiss Cisse and into the net at the Gallowgate End for his first league goal since May.
That was tough luck on an Albion side who had been the equal of United for most of the afternoon, despite going behind to a Demba Ba goal. United’s top scorer had already seen an earlier header saved but blasted home after Shola Ameobi nodded on Tim Krul’s lengthy punt.
United however failed to build on that start and looked nervy whenever the visitors counter-attacked, with Krul the busier of the two ‘keepers.
And it was no shock when the Dutchman was picking the ball out of his net ten minutes into the second half, when Romelu Lukaku nodded in front close range.
Ba then limped off with a foot problem and was replaced by Sammy Ameobi as United continued to find chances hard to come by – and remained vulnerable at the other end.
Perhaps crucially however, former Newcastle coach Steve Clarke opted to withdraw the dangerous Lukaku and his replacement Shane Long didn’t provide the same threat.
And somehow the black and whites conjured up a winning goal well into injury time – although the Baggies can count themselves desperately unfortunate not to have taken at least a point from their visit to Tyneside.
49 FatmanJoe // Oct 28, 2012 at 8:51 PM

We were so lucky today but got the victory in the end was strange why we never brought Ferguson on?? Also Ba going off injured was a gutter as i think he would have a field day against Liverpools defense next week!!
Perch had a good game at defensive mid won tackles and kept the ball unfortunately Cabaye and Jonas were terrible at passing today!!
It looks like we might get forced to go with a 451 or 433 against Liverpool with Cisse up front and 2 guys wide of him could be interesting….

Newcastle get a passing grade so far, but the one very good aspect of the season has been the progress of our young players. Bigi, Santon, Krul, are excellent and now Obertan, Fergie and Sammy are becoming more involved and looking good, and Campbell to come. Add that lot to our existing proven quality and capable squaddies and it’s hard not too imagine better form and increased points to follow.

You people saying sell Tiote are sooooo fickle its a joke. The same fans who now love HBA but were calling for his head early on saying he was wasteful. The same fans who said play Cisse over Ba at the start of the season.
Think of prior form you fools, yes Tiote is a hot head, yes his passing isn’t the best. However his positional play and how he breaks down play is second to none. He allows our attacking minded players freedom and we play so much better with him in our team.
The big problem is Anita was brought in as a Mulumbu type of player who breaks down play like Tiote but is better on the ball a bit like Dembele for spurs as well. Anita is struggling but he needs time as well HBA needed it Colo needed it Enrique needed it when he was here and all are top quality footballers. I think we that sort of player that he is meant to added to our midfield will make us a much better side. He did it at Ajax no reason he cant do it at Newcastle he just needs to get stronger and used to the pace.

Is it just me of is Obertan becoming a lot more consistent in his performances, the lad seems to be coming on nicely. His crossing is coming on leaps & bounds and of course we already knew he had great pace and skill.
These EL games are definitely helping him nurture and hopefully he will get his chance out wide in the first XI & I hope he takes it as with Ben Arfa & Obertan both at full potential on the wings we could see some amazing attacking football. Sammy as well looks super!
Great to see youngsters like Obertan, Sammy, Fergie, Santon & Bigi doing so well. Hopefully Amalfitano, Abeid, Campbell & Good etc will have their chance in due course.

He isn’t the best but his passing is getting a lot better he rarely loses the ball. BUT that isnt what he is there for…..there is no one we could get in better to replace him. I just think we need to Anita to come good and our midfield will be class.
Also if we are going to play 1 up top with HBA one side we need another type of quick player good on the ball Obertan if he ever turns up but maybe Sturidge/Remy

133 Big Pappa Cissé // Oct 28, 2012 at 9:43 PM
We were unstoppable playing 4-3-3 last season and went on a 7 game winning streak. We got a stuffing from an in form Wigan team and Pardew stopped using the formation alltogether. For me Pardew is scared that if he plays Ba out wide hid clause will kick in again and he will leave in January. If this is the case I would let Demba go because no man is bigger than NUFC. I hope not because I love Ba and he seems like a really nice lad, but if he left and we could bring in someone like Remi I would not be to heartbroken

There are plenty of people on this blog who share your views, it would be pretty boring if we all thought the same thing.. I just get so frustrated cause finally we have a team to get behind and that can genuinely secure silverware for us but we are underachieving massively. The only reason I can see for this is tactics and that’s Pardews fault….feel sorry for him though because he was obviously frustrated by little summer activity. Offering Europe we really could of got in some top players to make our team a real force (Debuchy, Sturidge, Sakho, Matuidi). I really hope Anita hits the form he did for Ajax.

Brushing the performance aside is what he’s you into trouble, what’s the saying about chances and the results will come along?
Thank god for that deflected goal. SJP Is getting quieter by the game with the rubbish performances. I cannot remember the last time we actually looked capable of playing as a team. Yeah we left with three points and I left with a smile on my face but up until that slice of luck it was just another day at the office, bad performances and a seemingly inevitable bad result, like I said thank ravens for that goal. The league table is looking better by the game and hopefully we start to gel better.
Obertan – looking better? Why because he scored on Thursday? The majority of the stadium today didn’t seem to think he had a good game. I’d love to cut our losses and ship him out abroad, Sammy amoebi was more effective today. As for selling tiote only if the offer will get us the same or better calibre defensive midfielder or improve the team in other positions.

Not proven guilty yet so we will see with Clattenburg. Bad call on Hernandez goal though and bit harsh second yellow on Torres. He gets a little hit but he’s diving a lot. Same could be said for Young when Ivanovic is unlucky and runs into him so yeah could have let it go.

Hardly any spark from the players and same goes for the fans. Lacklustre performances don’t help, it’s obvious we need something to lift our spirits. Today we had our first league game back after the official renaming and scored an early goal but these days when nothing is going your way in the pitch it’s either hostile or quiet. I prefer away games for atmosphere and unless we are allowed standing areas then I always will

Wow, just had a quick glance at catchy’s mental break down and it was an excellent call to leave the blog a few hours ago as I can’t imagine it would have been nice to bare witness to a man losing the will to live right in front of you…albeit on a computer screen.
I can understand certain frustrations from the performance but in my mind they are directed at the wrong person. If Cabaye is misplacing 5 yard passes how in utter God is that Pardew’s fault? Anyone who can answer that one without sounding like an irrational f*ckwit please do (sorry catchy that means you’re not allowed to answer)
And the line of “what does Pardew care as he has an 8 year contract in the bag” is a load of old bull. So these people think that Pardew wanted to get us up to 5th just to weasel an 8 year deal in the bag and deliberately play bad football so he could swindle us? Sound reasonable? No I don’t think so either.
It was a poor performance but we got 3 points, cash in your luck while you can and hope we play better in the next one. Last but not least, try and smile

Anyone who can answer that one without sounding like an irrational f***wit please do (sorry catchy that means you’re not allowed to answer)

Theres no way in a million years clattenberg would racially abuse a player.
Im sure he probably swore at him, which is fine i.m.o because the players swear at the refs all the time.
I just dont believe for 1 minute, that the ref would racially abuse him.

Midfield and full-back are the problem areas. Why don’t we play 4-3-1-2 ? Both Dembas get a game up top, Ben Arfa is given a free role, Jonas/Tiote/Cabaye in midfield and Santon and Anita deployed as marauding full/wing backs? It solves almost every one of APs tactical issues.

@boater
The only problem is, that Ba and cisse play shite together

Lest we had forgotten how big a player Krul is, today served as a timely reminder – as much as I like him, Harps doesn’t have the agility to keep out those Lukaku one-on-ones. At least one would have been buried today.
186 boater // Oct 29, 2012 at 12:42 AM
Leazes – The main problem is they both want to be up top – which rules out 4-3-3 as one has to go wide. We all saw that 4-3-3 fitted the players better last season – so this is a compromise of sorts. If they don’t combine – that’s a form issue, but at least doesn’t hold us back tactically – which is what’s happening now, i.e. the worst of both worlds. It relies on having two fullbacks capable of running the flanks all day – Debuchy would have been perfect but, still think Anita/Fergie could do a job – with Santon on either side.

Does he come in January or end of contract?
I read we are looking for Gonalons aswell. Lyon need or looking to sell two players in January and one in summer.
188 NUFC_LEAZES END // Oct 29, 2012 at 12:51 AM
@sazzer
He’ll sign a pre-contract on 1 January, which probably means he’ll sign for us on 1 July when the summer transfer window opens :p
189 Sazzer // Oct 29, 2012 at 12:56 AM
NUFC_LEAZES END
So we agree pre-pre-contract.

Aye basically, not sure, it’s quite confusing haa
191 NUFC STEVE // Oct 29, 2012 at 1:09 AM
Team vs Liverpool
They will outplay us poss. wise if we don’t play 4-3-3/4-5-1
Krul
Simmo-saylor-collo-santon
Obertan-Anita-Cabaye-perch/bigi-benny
BA (if he’s fit)
Think benny and obby would give great service on their natural sides and could interchange.they would give us that width we have lacked for a long time now and give BA the one thing he dreams about in his bed CONSTANT CROSSES!!!Anyone?
192 NUFC STEVE // Oct 29, 2012 at 1:11 AM
Oh yeah no Williamson because he’s not half as good as saylor and Suarez will rape him!!

Catchy, you should have done it more like this – http://youtu.be/h8gMOJJqxtE
194 Sazzer // Oct 29, 2012 at 1:36 AM
Anyhow, if it’s true it’s signing of french a international that in the long run can be massive for us.
Both Ba and Cisse dream of those. Maybe we should jump on the 3-5-2 trend that a lot of teams are trying.
Krul
Perch S.Taylor Colo
Anita Cabaye(Pirlo) Santon
Tiote/Bigi Jonas
Ba/Cisse Ben-Arfa

watching Hell in a Cell. and just read that were close to agreeing to sign Moussa Sissoko! hope its true. out of the blue
196 Sazzer // Oct 29, 2012 at 1:47 AM
Rather straight out of Les Bleus. French speaking free agents are our coup of tea. If the contract is running out or if they have secret clause Carr will find out and we will try to exploit it.
197 jesperfuglsang // Oct 29, 2012 at 5:06 AM
Morning lads!
Frightening as it is I got my prediction right yesterday. If we started 4-4-2 we would not win unless lady luck was on our side…
A performance like this usually leaves much for wanting, but I was actually left with a big smile on my face
…it is still there! lol
We got a long way to go no doubt about and and what I wanted more than a victory was a great performance from the lads in the whole 90 min.
I didn’t get that and it might be a while before I’ll get that, but we need a good run very badly so I’ll take instead.
Can we just hit a good patch like last season I am hoping the performance will pick up as well
I almost don’t dare say it cause I might get slaged for my repeative nature
but we need to move away from 4-4-2 and catch the modern train football (we just look so much better playing 4-3-3
I can see Pardew is getting some heat at the moment – I still believe he is a great manager, but his choice of tactics and subs are a bit of a puzzle at the moment.
198 jesperfuglsang // Oct 29, 2012 at 6:43 AM
Wizard…logic and reason are here now
…though my two years on this blog shows me not all agree lol
199 toonarmydownsouth // Oct 29, 2012 at 7:59 AM
Can we sign players on a pre contract yet? Thought it was january before we could talk to players otherwise counts as tapping up?
Still, hope its true canny player like but with our midfields form wonder if pards can convince cashley to pay a small fee to get him in by jan!
Would like to see a more offensive CM bought in look desperatly short of creativity atm
Jesper
Sadly we were playing a very strange 433 with shola on the wing! Fair play to him though put a couple of cracking balls in
Was also very impressed with gabby n sammy they changed the game for us which is something i’d thought gabby had lacked doing good to see him working hard to change that shame marv doesnt seem to be
200 HullMag6 // Oct 29, 2012 at 8:05 AM
Win pretty win ugly, a wins a win. A point or three (preferably) most games is top half material probably.
If sissoko rumour true – good news, but what about reinforcing where we’re thin squad wise like cb, cf and fb (r or l?) ?
201 check the toastie // Oct 29, 2012 at 8:08 AM
Gotta say blog got a bit frisky last night, old Catchy certainly got a little worked up.
People should be able to make any point they wish without the name calling, Kets included. Why people resort to that i have no idea, knobheads.
202 Owldman // Oct 29, 2012 at 8:21 AM
Forget about this Jonas @ left back crap he would get skinned any time he came across anyone with pace.As for the morons who are saying we should get rid of Tiote we missed him today.it was because he was,nt there that West Brom had the freedom of the middle of the park.
203 nimo // Oct 29, 2012 at 8:36 AM
can’t believe people stating pardew he’s trying hard to accommodate 3 top strikers and 4-3-3 isn’t working the way the majority of you seemt think it works .. it doesn’t help that through injuries and suspensions or one thing or another we haven’t played with the same team 2 games running.. we only have a wafer thin squad which isn’t pardews fault..
204 FatmanJoe // Oct 29, 2012 at 1:09 PM
Check
I hope that was ironic – calling people knobheads because they resort to name calling. Lol
