Newcastle have played well the last couple of games at Sunderland and against Club Brugge in the Europa League, since we were taken apart 3-0, by Manchester United at St. James’ Park a couple of weeks ago.
But we really need to start picking things up in the league, and we have only 10 points from our first eight games, and only two wins so far this season in the league.
Newcastle have a decent chance today to get all three points against West Brom at the newly named St. James’ Park stadium – yeah right!
And the Newcastle hierarchy have been trying to ensure a full house by selling tickets on the cheap, a deal the club announced on Friday.
Newcastle essentially have all their top players fit again, but we have Haris Vuckic and Ryan Taylor out for the season, and Dan Gosling out until January or February next year.
And the youngsters did particularly well on Thursday night against a decent Club Brugge side, and the three outstanding players were Sammy Ameobi, Gabby Obertan and Shane Ferguson, and it will be interesting to see if either one of those players are in the starting line-up today.
It’s difficult to know which team Alan Pardew will start today, but here’s our crack at the side:
Krul
Simpson Coloccini (c) Williamson Santon
Ben Arfa Perch Cabaye Gutierrez
Ba Cisse
Subs: Harper Taylor (S) Ferguson Ameobi (Sa) Anita Ameobi (Sh) Obertan
We expect James Perch to come in for the suspended Cheick Tiote, and we have Vurnon Anita on the bench, but the Newcastle manager may prefer 19 year-old Gael Bigirimana, and both can play in defensive midfield, but we think Perch will be preferred as the starter, because of his extra experience in the Premier League.
Coloccini was massive for Newcastle at the back last weekend at Sunderland, and we expect Mike Williamson to again be preferred over Steven Taylor at center-back, and one key to this game is that the first choice back five play solidly, and as well as they did at the Stadium of Light last Sunday.
Demba Ba is in good goalscoring form, and we have to hope he can get on the goals trail again this afternoon, and it would be great if Cisse can notch his first league goal of the season this afternoon.
Players like Ameobi (Sa), Obertan and Shane Ferguson could well get sub appearances this afternoon, after all three looked so good against Club Brugge in the 1-0 win.
But Newcastle have to get back o their winning ways in the league soon, and we hope we can do that this afternoon.
Let us know how you think we’ll fare against a good-looking West Brom side.

The Guardian has Bigi in as Tiote’s replacement. Then again, it was penned by a certain Ms Louise Taylor, so it’s probably not even an educated guess.

Ed, as I have said earlier Pards rarely surprises me tactically so it is 4-4-2 with the same lineup as always (besides Tiote of course). Whether Saylor or Willo starts is probably the discussion of the day
For me it is important we close down WBA today and put them under pressure to ensure thay cannot find Shane Long or any space to move into – if Pards think he can do that playing 4-4-2 than by all means do that (I’ll like t state now that I don’t think he can do that).
I am going out on a limb here – 4-3-3 today:

Jesper – there is no way Pardewasaurus will not select Jonas, just hope it is not wide left, total waste of everybodies time.
Anyway, wonder how many positions Jonas plays today, and i wonder how many formations we play during the 90 minutes, lets have sweep.
We will start 442 for sure, change to 4411, then maybe 4231, finishing with 451 holding on to our precious 1-0 lead. pretty predictable really.

Normally my anxiety ratchets up a notch with each subsequent addition of the likes of Willo, Perch, even the most excellent supersub Shola, in the starting 11, but at home against West Bromwich, I’m unusually full of confidence in them. Bad sign that!

Check…I forgot about Jonas there; I would probably change either Anita or Perch for Jonas in midfield!
…I have been saying this for a long time now, but Pard plays a lot of different 4-4-2 or variations there of
you can call it 4-4-1-1, 4-5-1 or a asymetric 4-4-2. It is still 4-4-2 with wingers (and the only trad. winger we have is Fergy. If he wants to play 4-4-2 he need a RM and a LM to balance it out and to keep possession. If he want widemen in modern football he need to change system.

You can quote me on this
‘If we start the game 4-4-2 we are not going to win this game’ (one exception: if lady luck is on our side; and we know if she is
)
22 Carryingcoals // Oct 28, 2012 at 11:14 AM
I think you have the lineup spot on here Ed, but I think it’s a harder game than maybe a lot of people are suggesting.
I did vote ‘win’ but I don’t think it’ll be by much. Hopefully Ba and Cisse are in the mood!
As for the 4-4-2, it has its benefits though can prohibit us. AT present, the way we are and with only just getting players back, I don’t think Pards can do much else. We can’t take too many risks today and starting 4-3-3 would indeed be a risk. Nevertheless we need the same intensity we approached Sunderland with.
I can see a poor first half like we did against Reading and then a lot more goals in the second. Really hope we can take the win today.
For a look at West Brom’s options: http://www.carryingcoals.com/?p=319

I think he has a point though, we are a good side on our day and I’d fancy us against most teams in the league, provided we had all players available that is.
I’m pessimistic on our top 6 chances though, January will be crucial. QF’s of Europe and top 8 and I think, realistically, we’ll have done well.
Good thing at the minute is we have most players available and looking at our upcoming fixtures we have the opportunity to go on a good run.
I’d get Lawro off match of the day though, his time must be up soon! Still though, a rare bit pf positivism from him, what a sweetheart ey

If we’re going to play 4-4-2 Shola should start instead of Cisse. I’m sick of seeing the same predictable crap.
We’ve played 4-3-3 in the Europa league and have looked a much better side. We keep the ball well and create more chances. The team has more fluidity to it and we generally play better.
For me, 10 games playing 4-4-2 is enough. It hasn’t worked. It would’ve worked against a very poor Sunderland side last week had Tiote stayed on the pitch but in every other game we’ve looked very poor and disjointed.

i would like for pardew to play ferg on the left and drop jonas,, we dont need him in CM,
i would like pardew to play more in the other teams half,,
we are at home ,, so i would like for us to be the ones that go on the hunt right from the first whistle instead of letting the other team score first then react to that,,
i would like some other subs used , obertan perch shola are his 3 fave subs, and they offer us nothing going forward,,
i would like cabaye playing up closer to the 2 cf players, where he is most efective

Would love to see a balls out attack like last season at the Hawthorns, what an amazing first half performance. That was a 4-3-3 I seem to remember… Got to smash it at the start like we did on Sunday. I’d go for some width as West Brom struggled on the wings last week and get some balls across from Fergie and maybe Ober, lots of threat coming through the middle with Yohan and Benny and Perchino at the top to break down, tackle and spread play. Sure Collo can contain Odemwingie who looked really threatening against Man City. Can always put Jonas in the DM role…

In my opinion you make a good point regarding Cabaye playing closer to the strikers. He needs to be in positions where he can slip a through ball in or have a shot more often.
Also I agree that we have started too many games slowly this season. I’m looking for us to get out the blocks today and make a stamp on the match early on. Hopefully the rest will fall into place if we can start the game in the right manner and dictate the play, rather than adjust to it and chase it. Gives the other team the tactical upper hand when that happens.
As for hoof ball – I wouldn’t say we play hoof ball. We look to pass it out of defense often. Sometimes we do have a habit of cutting out the midfield with a long ball, but sometimes is fine. There’s a time and a place, agreed we don’t always get it right. I’d say that in certain situations we do play it long from the back too often, for example when Shola comes on we tend to lump it to him every time, which is unnecessary and predictable. Having said that, Colo has a very good long pass and Ba is excellent at chasing the ball down and sneaking through so it’s not without its merits. However, sometimes we need to cut down on it.
I’m hoping we start Saylor next to Colo at the back, Perch as CDM and 3 pronged attack of Ba, Cisse and HBA. Cabaye, Perch and Ferguson in MF with 4 across the back. If we play 4-4-2 then HBA goes out to the right and Anita or Jonas comes into MF. Sammy should at very least be on the bench, as should Fergie and Obers. I really hope we start Cisse, I have a feeling that his first PL goal of the season is very close – especially if Fergie’s playing.

I know that means Jonas only gets a place on the bench but hey, we’ve gotta rotate, different tactics/lineups for different games so you can’t start him all the time. Besides, I think he makes a good sub as he can come on to help see a game out or to try and unlock something offensively. In fact we have great impact subs in that respect – Obers, Fergie and Sammyobi could all come on and change a game. As someone asked earlier, what has happened to Marvaeux and Amalfitano? Can only assume the former is unfit/not playing well and the latter has been deemed not ready for 1st team action yet. Thought I’d see them more in Europe though.

Tequila…I have calm down now…I swear
85 tequilamag // Oct 28, 2012 at 12:59 PM
Supermag, we have lost 2 in the league and none in Europe

Q8
So we should be 4points better off?
I think had we played 4-3-3 we would’ve won both. Reading and Villa are awful and I hope Villa go down.
I don’t understand why we play 4-3-3 in the Europa League and not the PL.
87 tequilamag // Oct 28, 2012 at 1:00 PM
No probs Jesp

Q8…I think Rainrix’ comment was ment to be sarcastic (I am not sarcastic right now but quite honest)
…you can precive it how you like – positive, negative or something else. It is my honest opinion and I stick by it
What are you on about with languages?
92 tequilamag // Oct 28, 2012 at 1:04 PM
Super also agree that we have drawn too many, I put that down to injury problems with defence rather than formation issues. But each to their own opinion.
93 Conaldo (The Wizard) // Oct 28, 2012 at 1:06 PM
I think best results for today
Everton win
Chelsea win
Southampton spurs draw
Newcastle win.
That would open the table right up. Keep Liverpool below us.
94 q8igeordie // Oct 28, 2012 at 1:06 PM
super … i hate villa too …. i think when the team starts games it will be a standard 442 .. but during the game tactics and formation change .. so we might play 443 or 451 but not at the beginning
95 rainrix // Oct 28, 2012 at 1:07 PM
Jesper… Am i that predictable?
96 Super Magpie // Oct 28, 2012 at 1:08 PM
Tequila
I agree with that. Injuries have cost us. But so have the wrong tactics.
We have a full strength squad now except Tiote, so no excuses today.
97 Conaldo (The Wizard) // Oct 28, 2012 at 1:08 PM
Although Everton Liverpool draw would probably be better. Stop the gap between us an everton
98 Rowan Milsted // Oct 28, 2012 at 1:10 PM
I’ve done a cheeky accumulator – Newcastle, Spurs, Everton and Queen of the South to win, Chelsea – Man Utd draw.
99 Super Magpie // Oct 28, 2012 at 1:12 PM
Conaldo
Everton draw
Chelsea draw- stop them from pulling away from the pack.
Southampton win
Toon Win ofc

im sorry if the truth isnt so nice to hear, and i think you have miss read what i have been saying
i would like us to win and i have no problems with us drawing or losing IF we at least give a go,,
IMO THE POINTS WE HAVE ARE DOWN TO LUCK NOT GOOD PLAY,
everton and another team we drew against was the ref that got us points

104 jimiley // Oct 28, 2012 at 1:16 PM
Jonas is a world class winger who has been disappointing this season.. A couple of assists and goals will do nicely to reestablish himself as one of the best wingers in the league. With the exception of Ronaldo, can anyone name a better winger?

Buenas tardes!
Woke up in time and I’m ready to enjoy the game. Have we had any news?
107 tequilamag // Oct 28, 2012 at 1:19 PM
Super, definitely the best options Pardew had had in terms of players being available. Gave up trying to second guess Pardew as he has never picked the starting 11 I would have picked. Still have a lot of faith in the man though. Don`t really care what the formation is, fully expect the win.
108 q8igeordie // Oct 28, 2012 at 1:19 PM
jimiley …. OBERTAN
109 jesperfuglsang // Oct 28, 2012 at 1:21 PM
Rainrix….no of course you are not
lol
Tequila…you are right there many aspects to why we are grinding out so many draws. For me the tactics has been a long standing one (especially when lady luck is not on our side) But we cannot buy a new defender yet and we cannot much about injuries.
It is not just the tactics it is the repeative nature of Pards selections that bugs me at times. My teacher (at the School of Architecture) once told me that you need to be able take a step back and look at your project with different eyes and you need to be willing to ‘kill your darlings’
Now that has been a life lesson for me!
110 Big Pappa Cissé // Oct 28, 2012 at 1:21 PM
We really need a win today like. Our season needs a kick start so a convincing win (like stoke at home last season) would be perfect
111 jimiley // Oct 28, 2012 at 1:22 PM
At 106.
You have to be joking. Nobody works harder than Jonas. He helps out his full back and is great going forward. He whips in great crosses and its not his fault that our strikers cannot get on the end of them. He needs to increase his strike rate and it is the one area where he lags well behind Ronaldo.
112 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Oct 28, 2012 at 1:25 PM
Big Pappa….I’m never really one to say we “need a win” and whilst it wouldn’t really be catastrophic, a win would put us back in that top 10 mix comfortably. Would really like us to not make the task at hand as difficult as possible.
Hoping for a convincing display, but fully expecting WBA to test us.
113 tequilamag // Oct 28, 2012 at 1:26 PM
Jesp , I agree 433 is a lot easier on the eye, but I think you are perhaps being a little harsh on Pardew. One of his strengths is that he is willing to change formation during a game if he thinks it is not working.
We all have our favourites when it comes to players. I would argue that Pardew is much better placed to make those calls as he sees the players every day. Don`t think Pardew is playing favourtism at all.
114 beefman13 // Oct 28, 2012 at 1:33 PM
We should always be on the front foot at SJP why play two utility players in midfield when we have genuine midfielders in the squad, jonas and perch offer nowt going forward, we are inviting teams on to us with these formations.
anita and cabaye is a partnership that can really work.
anita will get more ball time and therefore get more confidence and build his game to us.
If i were anita i would be seriously p.ssed off if perch took my midfield berth.
Im not even sure i would play jonas at home.
krul
simpson
santon
colo
saylor
anita
cabaye
ferguson
ben arfa cisse
ba
campbell
I know not a hope in hells chance that AP would go with this but no negativity in this line up at all.
and we would stick it right to WBA.
Shola we all know about, lets get some freshness in and give the young lad campbell a big opportunity like liverpool are doing with stirling.
ATTACK AT THE TOON IS CERTAINLY THE WAY FORWARD, NOT SITTING AND SOACKING UP PRESSURE IE PERCH AND JONAS IN THE MIDDLE.

The 4-3-3- advocates on here think 4-4-2 is boring, unadventurous and will be unsuccessful in bringing us a win.
What would you guys say to SAF for his dominant formation over the last 25 years ?
He has built his style on very good wide players and a two pronged attack. So what are we missing ?
You can play badly in 4-4-2, badly in 4-3-3 or well in either. We don’t seem to have the players on form just now, so until,we get that spark back , we’ll just have to grind out results whatever way we play.
I’m actually for 4-3-3 but I do understand why we are not playing it just now even though we do have the quality – I think it is just finding the right balance.
Totally agree that Cabs needs to play advanced and almost alongside a roving Benny behind the front two if we are going to set up that way.

q8igeordie
yes it does, some more than others
hand on your heart, can you honestly say you understand why he is playing with DMC’s
in this system that he plays every week now,, is jonas the best option to play in the center along side cabye or tiote,,, surly bigi or perch would be a more obvious choice for that position
i for one hate being so negative , esp when the squad of players we have right now has some great attacking options in there, that pardew raves about himself,, so why not set them free and see what they can do

4-4-2 again *sigh* today was a perfect day for 4-3-3 I feel but I have faith in Pards & the boys to get the result we need today (3-0 the Toon)
133 beefman13 // Oct 28, 2012 at 2:20 PM
Imo we need to get anita playing as often as possible, surely we don’t need two defensive minded midfielders at home, our forwards need service, get. Fergie on the wing quality crosses need to be delivered and this kid can do them!
