There are reports in Italy that Newcastle manager Alan Pardew may be interested in yet another Ajax center-back – this time it’s Niklas Moisander who is a Finnish International , with Newcastle in the past being linked with Jan Vertonghen, who ended up at Tottenham in the summer, and Toby Alderweireld, who are both Belgian International defenders.
Niklas Moisander – 6′ Finnish center-back joined Ajax in August
So maybe Niklas Moisander is one of the seven center-backs Alan Pardew has said is on the Newcastle list for shopping for central defenders in January, and we also think Toby Alderweireld is .
However Nicklas is rather old at 27, and we would have expected Newcastle to be bringing in a younger center-back to fortify what we already have in 31 year-old Fab Coloccini, 28 year-old Mike Williamson and 26 year-old local lad Steven Taylor.
Niklas has only just arrived at Ajax, having been brought in last August from AZ to replace the departed Jan Vertonghen who was sold to Tottenham, and Niklas signed a three-year deal at the Dutch Champions.
Moisander started his career in Finland at his local club Turun Palloseura in 2002,. and then he moved to Ajax in 2003 and stayed there for three years before moving to Dutch club PEC Zwolle for a couple of years before moving onto AZ in 2008, where he stayed until last August, before rejoining Ajax.
The player was born in Turku and stands 6′ tall and he has played for all of the Finnish youth teams including 30 caps at the full International level.
Alan Pardew has said he wants a goal scoring center-back who can get goals from set plays, and it seems that Niklas has three goals in sixteen appearances for Ajax this season.
Niklas seems a decent center-back but a little old, and we would expect Newcastle to bring in somebody under 25 in January – but we’ve been wrong before.
