Newcastle To Make Renewed Bids For Two Defensive Targets

8:49 am, Friday, November 2nd, 2012 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 22 Comments

Last summer was not a good transfer window for Newcastle, and after stating the need to reinforce the defense,  we failed to bring in one top class defender in last summer’s transfer window.

Mathieu Debuchy in France’s colors – still hoping to land at Newcastle

When that kind of thing has happened in the past – for example the summer before when we failed to bring in a striker to replace Andy Carroll, Newcastle have done their best to do some deals in the January transfer window, and we bought Papiss Cisse for around £9M from SC Freiburg last January – and that turned out to be an excellent deal for the Magpies.

And the same kind of thing could happen in a couple of months, as it appears that two of our targets last summer – Mathieu Debuchy and Douglas – are still on Newcastle’s radar screen.

Douglas – would cost only nominal fee in January

Douglas will become a free agent in early July, when his contract runs out at FC Twente, and he will be available for maybe half of what his club was wanting for him in the summer – which is rumored to have been around £4M or £5M.

It may be more difficult to get a good deal for Mathieu Debuchy at Lille, but perhaps his club  have softened their stance on the French International, since Mathieu has let them know he is desperate to move to Newcastle to join his friend Yohan Cabaye at the Tyneside club.

It would be great if Newcastle can get these two defenders on Tyneside, and if Mathieu Debuchy comes, look to Newcastle to sell Danny Simpson in January, and recoup some of the transfer fee they will pay to Lille for Mathieu Debuchy.

Can i just tempt fate and say if we got players or this quality we would be guaranteed a top 6 finish. Everyone knows its our defence that has been our major let down. We just need quality to be covered by quality. Williamson has done a good job but hes not a premiership starter.

I realy hope this happens but and it’s a big but will the TOON money dealers go back to clubs who agreed a price then backed out at the last minuet.

We should be looking to sign Aldereweirld and a left back. Santon is better at right back and confirmed that that’s his favourite position on his personal website.

This would be great news ,let’s hope there is some truth in the noise.
The only thing I don’t get is keeping santon at left back ,he is a solid defender but so much better going forward on the right ,when he plays at left back he always has to cut preference would be forget Dubuchy and get a left back and shift Davide to right side .
Whatever looks like we have seen the last of Simpson and good ridance

We should’ve snapped up Aly Cissokho. £4m was a bargain.

HOPE really is something you can sell in buckets.

It amazing Carr gets any peace, what with everyone knowing the clubs business dealings in advance – he must spend half his time secretly briefing journalists.

. .unless they just make up . .

Really unconvinced with the temperament of Douglas. Our club seems to have a great dressing room unity at the moment – at the very least the players seem to have bought into a unified direction as a collective rather than as individuals just using a club as a career stepping stone.

Everything I’ve read of Douglas suggests ego and a kind of mercenary attitude. Morale and harmony are very delicate things in a club and I could see him being an unbalancing influence. Even at a low, nominal fee, he may not be worth the risk.

    S. Taylor and Williamson are both centre-backs of similar quality to Douglas, who is decent but not in the same bracket as our Rolls Royce Coloccini. It strikes me that we need pace and hunger in that position. Coloccini’s reading of the game, and distribution, would suit a real athlete playing alongside him – an imposing, quick, physical presence with his best years ahead of him. Any suggestions?

As for Debuchy – an excellent signing, still, but the club’s foot-dragging is becoming worrying. I’m all for not paying over the odds and running a club responsibly, but he’s a top international, and if an extra million had seen the deal over the line in the summer (and the money is there to support Pardew, we’d been told) then we should have paid it. His aggression and dynamism might have made the difference of a fair few points for us during the first half of the season. Would still love to see him here.

Me too a lot of people get wound up about his repetitive dream team signings and his hatred for a certain two defenders I won’t mention Simpson and Williamson Oops !

  • 16 Tsunki // Nov 2, 2012 at 9:41 AM

I think Ed puts these articles out to get ketsuy wound up. Works well too. Any chance of highlighting that dream team thingy about willo being the best cb in the prem? Should be a riot.

I’d rather see Santon on the right, to help with our crosses from that side. He still doesnt convince me as a defender, and was missing in action for the West Brom goal aswell. He doesnt get close enough to players, and this has been a consistent weakness, but people here only see his forward runs, nice as they are. He has good technique and a great engine, but could do better. Put it this way, Simpson is a better on the defensive side of full back play, but hugely limited on the ball. If Santon says that his preferred position is right back, thats certainly interesting news.

I would love to see Debuchy in the black and white stripes and maybe a quality CB like Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa to play alongside Collocini, would have to drop S.Taylor to the bench but what great back up he would be. I don’t think Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa will come in so Douglas may do but i think he will be back up for S.Taylor.
If Ba leaves another striker needs to be brought in asap as we would be depending on Cisse to stay fit and play every game until next season. Remy or Doumbia would be perfect and would add a bit of pace up top.
Another position we may need to add to if Ashly has any coppers left is on the LW, yes Sammy and Fergie are looking good and we have Jones and Marvaux aswel but i belive we need a bit more pace down that side. They are alot of good young wingers out there we could look at like Porto’s Juan Manuel Iturbe who looks to be an exciting young player at 19 years of age (hint hint Mr Carr).
    My NUFC January team.

Santon IS a right back but can play on left side, so should’ve been ahead of Simpson in pecking order. Its pards who’s played him left back all to accommodate ruddy Simpson. Talk about favoritism! I can’t wait to see the back Simpson who’s way above his.station.

  • 20 Les Grossman // Nov 3, 2012 at 9:19 AM

Simpson is the best rightback at the club, it’s a fact!!
