Newcastle Star One Booking Away From Suspension

10:51 am, Saturday, November 3rd, 2012 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 133 Comments

Alan Pardew knows that Jonas Gutierrez, the Argentine International, who has become a permanent fixture in Newcastle’s side since Alan Pardew arrived, has picked up four yellow cards and he is just one caution away from a one match ban.

Jonas Gutierrez - one yellow card away from one match ban

A number of other Newcastle players are also edging towards their fifth yellow card, and with the squad so small, that’s got to be some concern for the manager.

But in Jose’s case we have a number of wingers only too willing to take their chance if Jonas is suspended, and they include Gabby Obertan, Sammy Ameobi, Sylvain Marveaux and Romain Amalfitano.

James Perch also has four yellow cards this season, and James is becoming a solid member of the side, and plays in multiple different positions in the first team, currently filling in for Cheick Tiote in defensive midifeld.

Cheick Tiote and Yohan Cabaye have picked up three cautions, and of course Cheick is serving a three match ban in the Premier League for being sent off against Sunderland.

Here’s the stats on discipline so far this season for each Newcastle player, and this is how Alan addressed the cautions:

“There’s nothing I can do about that.” “That’s not in our thinking. I will cope with the suspensions when they arrive.”

Alan’s right about that, all he can do is to tell Newcastle’s players not to pick up silly yellow cards, but to tell them to pull back in their aggression and tackles on the pitch is a dangerous thing to do.

The lads have to have that bite in the tackle and controlled aggression on the field, but they also need to be sensible and not do daft things that gets them a caution.

Comments welcome.

‘controlled aggression’ – are you listening Mr T!

hit the nail right on the head there Ed!

A suspension might be good for him, because he’s been rubbish lately.

    if Bacould not play: 4-2-3-1
    ——————————Krul—————————

    ——————–Colo————Saylor—————

    Santon————Bigi———-Perch——–Jonas

    ———Benny————Cabaye————-Fergie

    ——————————–Cisse———————

Good wingbacks, skilfull and quallity wing forwards, creative attacking midfielder and one box to box midfielder EPL standart and CDM capable of doing his duties. Defense pair is solid too.. Keeper is as good as always. For me the only question is Cabaye. if he could find his form we’ll win.

    back up plan:

subs: Obertan IN, Jonas Out (Fergie LB), Sammy IN Perch or Bigi Out, And Shola IN for Cisse if he doesn’t score in 75min..

    4-1-2-3
    —————————Krul—————————-

    IMO,
Santon, Jonas and Fergie are much bigger threat going foward (and with that in mind opposition has more questions – easier to defend). Santon, Jonas and Fergie can defend as well as Simmo if not better. Santon could cause more problems crossing with his right foot, over lapping benny who cuts inside to shot with his magical left. Jonas is a good Left Wing Back wich tends to cut inside, he can take on his man, or by cuting inside create some space for fergie to put a nice cross. Cabaye could pass a through ball two cisse as well as dictate the tempo of the game with his range of passing. Perch and Bigi in my eyes are good pair to have protecting cabaye’s back. Cabaye also usually defens well. I really would like to see my formation against liverpool. I stated my case so i’d like to hear something from you (Blog Readers and Writer).

Jonas is probably the regular who will be the least missed if he gets a ban.

His work rate is superb, it just produces nothing. He manages to get fouled regularly and wins free kicks, but the opposition are prepared and ready for the incoming ball.

He has lost pace, is unable to beat his man to the bye-line and couldn’t cross the road, let alone a ball. It is time he was either given a new role or moved off the starting line-up. If there was an offer for him, I would accept it without hesitation.

    If Ba plays: 4-2-2-2

    ——————————-Krul—————————-

    ———————Colo————Saylor————–

    Santon———-Perch———–Jonas———Fergie

    —————–Ben Arfa———-Cabaye————–

or 4-3-1-2: i think Ben Arfa could play more centraly to get on the ball more often:

    Santon———–Colo———Willo———-Jonas

    ————-Cabaye——Perch——Fergie———-

    —————————-Ben Arfa—————-

    ———————Cisse—————–Ba

i also liked the idea of 3-4-1-2 or 5-3-2:

    ——————————–Krul—————————-

    —————Saylor———Colo———Perch———-

    Santon————Cabaye——–Jonas——–Fergie

    —————————-Ben Arfa———————–

    ——————Cisse——————-Ba—————

if Ba could not play: 4-2-3-1, then

    ——————————Krul—————————

    ——————–Colo————Saylor—————

    Santon————Bigi———-Perch——–Jonas

    ———Benny————Cabaye————-Fergie

    ——————————–Cisse———————

    Frey
I agree, saying we will beat anyone 3 -0 is silly just because of a formation, for me 433 is not good, yes we won a few games with it last year, but , BA was a passenger for the most part, and another this is Pardew never sets his team up to score 3, score and defend his lead,

Ba and cisse are great finishers , we need to create more chances for them as a front 2 , and while there is quite a few on here saying our players are not as good as we think they are , the things we do know is cabaye playing further up the pitch can pick slide rule passes out, and if ferguson was on the left he will put crosses in to the box, as he has done on many occasion this season already ,

That’s not asking for a huge change, it’s asking for one player to be dropped, jonas, and be A little more offensive in our play,

  • 10 fray bentos // Nov 3, 2012 at 11:55 AM

    @catchy

I agree, would love to see more of ferguson, but there must be a reason he isn’t getting more time, maybe he wouldn’t have as much affect starting and it was acknowledged he would be a grat impact sub for the meantime which he has,

As for lack of attacking this season, it is frustrating but maybe with some of our important midfield players not being on form he doesn’t want to put too much pressure on the defence and has opted for more defensive approach while still acquiring adequate points which it has. I’m sure this will change. Last season we went through different spells of football so most likely this will be the same season so it’s going to change I think.

Overall I think stability is the key, even if we finish mid table it’s a fine, the guy will be learning and each season at the rope level will make him better

  • 11 toonincheek // Nov 3, 2012 at 12:05 PM

    Belfast – and a few others –

Did you see that stats that showed Guti to be in the top six of players winning the ball back?
Can’t remember for sure, but I think that may have been Europe, not just PL.

You may say that that is not his job – but someone has to do it.
You underestimate his contribution to the team based on a very limited aspect of the team needs.

  • 12 BelfastMagpie // Nov 3, 2012 at 12:17 PM

    I’ve never disputed that mate.

He works hard and is great pro etc

But he shouldnt be playing on the wing.

I would personally rather have a flair player on the wing, who creates chances and chips in with a few goals.

  • 13 BelfastMagpie // Nov 3, 2012 at 12:22 PM

Thats the biggest problem with that 4-4-2 formation in my opinion.

No creativity from the left winger.

  • 14 Dannyo // Nov 3, 2012 at 12:30 PM

Gutti is best used as a LB or a holding midfielder. But apart from being good at winning the ball back, he doesn’t do mich with it when he does get it anymore.
Imo, he’s a player with his age catching up with him, cause his performances, no matter how many miles he runs, are fewer an further apart.
Last season, Willo and Cabaye had plenty games where they ran much longer than Gutti.

    belfast i agree

    frey

the key word you just said is stability,,

stability is more than just keeping the same manager,

stability is getting the players used to playing in THERE right positions so they know what there rolls are with in the team,,
right now we have probably less stability in our club than ever, due to the fact pardew makes way to many changes during any one match,
now if he is going to change as often as he does, IMO he would be better trying to put players who are better at certern jobs than others,

    I.E, 433
a target man and 2 pacey forwards who can cross or cut in and shoot,
probably bigi and tiote cabs playing as the 3 in mid field,
as for me, jonas is now niether a winger or DMC,

to many players playing out of position, will sooner or later make them look a worse player than they really are
rare players like steven gerrard can do it, but not many others,
we play at least 6 or 7 every game now

but you are right,, we do need more stability

  • 16 Luke-A-Like // Nov 3, 2012 at 12:33 PM

We can’t keep trying to defend a 1-0 lead, it doesn’t work, eventually the other team will score if we just invite pressure on. We need to try and get 2 or 3 goals up before we start defending for the rest of the game

  • 22 Transfer Sage // Nov 3, 2012 at 1:31 PM

For me Jonas is not a winger now, his final ball is shocking so even if he does beat a man it’s wasted.

He is better suited to full back or dm now…..but why do that?

He is neither our best full back or best dm. He should be benched, used in cups and brought on towards the end of a game.

  • 23 Transfer Sage // Nov 3, 2012 at 1:36 PM

another point while I’m here……Ben arfa plays too wide.

    I would love to see a 4-3-3

Play tiote as a dm to hold.

Play cabaye and Ben arfa in the middle slightly ahead, like xavi and iniesta for barca, let then pass the ball and also get forward to assist the man through the middle.

The up front go for fergie left, Ba/cisse middle and obertan on the right.

Make fergie and obertan stay wide.

This will mean they either end up with a lot of space outside to run at players….or…..if team push out it leaves more room for Ben arfa and cabaye in the middle.

It’s what top teams do, stretch the opposition to creat room in the final third.

We currently play far too narrow with Ben arfa and Jonas as wingers as they come inside and the whole team is crowded out through the middle.

Arsenal arent a shade as good as they used to be. Cazorla is a great player mind.

As for Jonas he loves us and he works his socks off but i agree age is catching him up. Id like to keep him as a squad player but agree he shouldnt start anymore.

Well said poor jonas becoming the new scapegoat for the season!

    Novo
Wilshere was a red waiting to happen and had been since the first half the difference was SAF was smart to hook cleverly where wilshere who’d been booked and warned on a couple of occassions was left on didnt need to be physcic to see he was going

  • 32 catchy in norway // Nov 3, 2012 at 3:23 PM

    29Tsunki

right ,, unlike obertan, who has done nothing in a black and white shirt apart from hide, ( my opinion) i look at jonas as a player who has given his all in the shirt when he has worn it, and still continues to do so, BUT there is a time when his best is no longer good enough to warrent a place in the first team,
for 3 seasons in my opinion, jonas was one of our better players, like in the top 3 players most weeks,, but from the middle af last season to now, we get nothing out of him other than a guy who runs around,,, and i think( not 100% sure) but if you checked the stats the stats would show jonas no longer coveres half as much ground as he did,,,

unfortunitly for him, he is in a profession where he is judged on what he can offer the team, and i and many many others, believe it is time to try another option on the left side of mid field

    we have to move forward

  • 33 Dannyo // Nov 3, 2012 at 3:24 PM

    @Tsunki
Wouldn’t call it bashing mate, not saying he’s utterly useless like.
But i am saying there are atleast two players i’d pick before him.
Sammy and Fergy has shown much better form, and we need more creators om the pitch.
Not saying it’s right to not field him away against Liverpool to.

  • 34 toonarmydownsouth // Nov 3, 2012 at 3:41 PM

    Dannyo
But thats 2 players on the wing where i think jonas should be playing CDM or LWB with santoon at RWB
Also not wanting to knock them either but fergie and sammy are promising prospects thats all atm personally think ober should get the nod over both as a starter ppl say over offers nout but when he does get an assit or a goal ppl say yeah but thats all he did well for me thats short sighted i think against WBA him n santon looked lethal so maybe ober RW and benny LW?
I know some want us to play benny in a CAM role with cabs but i dont think we have enough pace at the back to play without 2 DCMs atm

  • 35 Transfer Sage // Nov 3, 2012 at 3:42 PM

You cannot let sentiment dictate the team.

Jonas has served the club well and I have no doubt he goes out there and gives everything he has.

The harsh reality is that he is played left midfield. That positions main goal is to provide good crosses and chip in the odd goal, defensive duties should not be his main aim.

I admire him as a professional and a person but his quality has dipped hugely.

  • 36 Transfer Sage // Nov 3, 2012 at 3:45 PM

    Tads

With playing only tiote as a dm we should be fine.

Simpson doesn’t get forward so we usually have 3 left back with also santon sometimes and tiote we should be fine.

I know we aren’t up there with top quality sides but I would argue we are as good as arsenal this year.

There is definitely equal amounts of attacking quality in the team, if anything we have more than them.

Pardew needs to be braver in team selections and get some of our attacking players more licence to attack.

  • 37 Dannyo // Nov 3, 2012 at 3:50 PM

    @tads
Ye, there other positions where he could do better, but then u potentially hamper Anita and Biggie in those positions.
Also, got faith in Fergy as an LB too, he’s shown competance in that role aswell and should only get better.
Obertans there, but he’s suited at RW and hasn’t shown much at LW in my recolletion. Altho that could change aswell.
I’m still adamant that using form players is the way forward. U can only put aside youngsters for so long due to age alone.

  • 38 catchy in norway // Nov 3, 2012 at 4:00 PM

    tds

obertan needs to become a lot better on the right side before he switches to the left side,
he can not cross with his right foot , so that leaves him the only option of cutting in

  • 39 eaststandgeordie1982 // Nov 3, 2012 at 4:07 PM

I love jonas but we need someone with more of a threat and a great cross and fergie fits that bill hes ahead of everyone for me on the left and deserves a run in the side.

  • 40 Graeme // Nov 3, 2012 at 4:08 PM

Just to bring some cheer and joy to the blog, here are some interesting stats on our dear neighbours this season!!

Shots on target – 12, the lowest in the league
Hit the woodwork – 0, the only team in the league
Attempted shots – 42, the lowest in the league
Shots off target – 30, the lowest in the league
Shooting accuracy – 28.57%, the worst in the league

Looks like O’Neill is following in the footsteps of Agent Bruce with aplomb; long may it continue lol

My point is based on olayers form having tiote hold that role with him playing like he is is asking for trouble, we all seem happy to see players like ba and jonas dropped (not aimed at you) but pards has built tiote up to much as an untouchable he’s on a 3 match ban and anita should be in there trying to put pressure on tiote to up his game
And dont agree that jonas plays LM, he starts there but cant remember a game where he finished there

    Dannyo
Inform players should be picked nit going to disagree, ober played a great game against bordeux on the left
For me i dont fergie could or should be a LB everytime i seem him there he gets dragged across by someone everytime leaving the flank wide open happened time and time again against manure also think he lacks positional sense the lad is a winger but i still feel he is one of our “overrated” youngsters he looks quick but when peope seem to want us to be a top 4 team with europe every year he just doesnt seem like a starter to me in a team with those sort of expectations and in all honesty i would of liked him to go on loan this season to get a full season under his belt, for me thats why so many of our youngsters dont move on from just bieng promising we dont loan them to a good level or we dont loan them at all

  • 45 Transfer Sage // Nov 3, 2012 at 4:14 PM

    Sunderland are terrible.

If you think they have fletcher, McLean, sessegnon, Larson, Johnson, Gardner…all decent attacking players yet they creat absolutely nothing.

I know I have complained pardew is a little too cautious with making players defend too much and hinder us attacking but oneil takes it to a whole other level

  • 48 Transfer Sage // Nov 3, 2012 at 4:20 PM

    Tads

But Jonas does start there and when he is there offers nothing which is why I think he should not start there and if played, play a different role for the 90mins. He starts left mid, does nothing then gets moved and does better, pardew must notice this and shouldn’t be starting him there.

And I agree tiote is reckless this year, I could be his biggest critic here.

I just think players need to be dropped, we have better ones or ones in better form.

Same way I am glad cisse was benched, shows he can’t live off last seasons heroics and a place must be earned.

But a point about saying tiote alone as a dm is trouble…well barca play just one but players further forward press and get back.

We might not be anywhere near barca it attacking quality but there is no reason cabaye and Ben arfa can’t play advanced in the middle but track back and come deep too, the key is having players who can rotate in positions.

Yes we might be open sometimes but overall I think it will help us pick up more points and develop the team in the long run.

Dont get me wrong jonas shouldnt play LM really think he should be LB but you also to think how do you prepare, as a player, for a game not knowing how many positions you are going to play? I genuinely believe this to be the main fault for his form he sometimes plays up to 4 positions in a game no one else in our squad is expected to do that theres to much put on jonas which is even more reason why players like anita need to step up a relieve some pressure give us some options

As for one CDM eventually i agree would ve great but for now i think tiote cant handle it atm and also have some huge reservations about cabayes fitness this season

I understand Jonas getting confused but it’s his quality I question. No matter how confused he is he should still be able to cross a ball when in the position.

I think him not getting forward isn’t he is fault. It’s almost like he is played to defend the left side of the pitch. So I think it’s a tactics issue preventing him going forward but his own fault for not crossing wellwhen he is forward.

    Cabaye I did odd.

Seem him play twice for France brilliantly but poor for us.

I am sure it’s because as a team we aren’t passing and moving, this includes everyone, as well as we should. Players rarely have options when they have the ball so end up going long. Our off the ball movement has been shocking this season.

There’s nothing to panic over but the whole team need to up their game.

If we win in Brugge, we are in the knockouts, and that has to be priority in the coming weeks. I would like to see a really strong team sent over there, it’s not too much travel, and do the job for all the fans travelling over. Show spurs and the bindippers how to do it in Europe :)

  • 73 Graeme // Nov 3, 2012 at 5:37 PM

Tarie – after the crap they have served up the last 4 games (except europe) they owe us a proper performance.

Pardeau has no excuses, nowhere to hide. He has had the team together with nothing to consider but how to get all 3 points off the bindippers. Unless we perform like 11 spartans from start to finish there will be a lot of very pissed off fans on here.

If we perform, put in the effort, go down fighting, most of us will accept a close defeat, but if any one of the team can do more than crawl off at the end, it will be an unacceptable loss. Nothing less than 101% from ALL 11 players is the minimum performance.

  • 74 toonLYF // Nov 3, 2012 at 5:39 PM

    Barcelona are just unique.

They play unlike anyone else, the fluidity and constant high pressure works for them.

You question how well they do in this league but they always dominate English teams in the champs league with that style and that’s the best teams we have to offer.

Their league is underrated too. I think of 1st played 1st all the way down to 20th v 20th between English and Spanish teams there would be a lot more Spanish winners than English.

Their league looks so 2 teamed simply because barca and real are superb and consistent. Not because other teams are poor really.

  • 87 bills-son // Nov 3, 2012 at 6:13 PM

The more I see Carroll the more I get baffled by what has happened to his game. He used to be decent at linking play and running the channels but that seems to have disappeared. All he does is challenge for high balls – no matter how good you are at winning those its never a skill that is worth anywhere near £35M and £80K a week. Unless he dramatically improves he will go down as the worst buy of all time – and the best ever sale.

  • 88 Readingmag // Nov 3, 2012 at 6:13 PM

Agent O’Neil great work, superb. Your being to obviousness though, try not to make your arch rivals cult figure as your top scorer your own top goal (joint) in Oct 2012. Get your team to at least score some goals, or your cover will be busted. blame the fans and shit signings from Agent Bruce He is right behind you (well 13 miles up north). Lastly keep the idiot Catermole on the pitch, its just a matter of time until He sees read again. Everton next week. loose by the odd goal and blame a bad decision… The idiots will be confused for weeks. Try and last until Jan, buy some more rubbish as previously discussed, get Wellbeck for 20 Million (he must CityFBI) , and try Adebayor

I get the impression that nobody thinks we have played well this season? At least not continuously, it’s been fairly frustrating. Yeah a win tomorrow would stick us in the top 6 with game vs Swansea and west ham to come. The top 3 look like they will pull away but 4,5,6th after wide open. If we get a decent run together we will be right up there, if we’re a top 8 team playing poorly, what are we when we play well?

    Bills

For me there are a few things with Carroll.

    1) he loved playing for Newcastle, it got more effort out of him I think

    2) he had half a good season in the PL, lots do that without ever kicking on and players get found out, can’t always adapt

    3) he has had a lot of injuries past 2 years, little niggles to keep him out and stop him getting rhythm.

    4) constantly being told you aren’t good enough after being billed as the next big thing can’t so your confidence any good at all

He has fallen so far from grace through injuries, new club and a manager that doesn’t back him and play to his style.

He might never have kicked on into a world class striker but he could have become a good, solid 10-15 goal a season striker which is a good achievement.

Hopefully he can find form again.

  • 92 toonLYF // Nov 3, 2012 at 6:19 PM

good post Transfer Sage, and very very true. I think Barca/Real would walk the EPL, and Athletico Madrid (better than Spurs, Arsenal, Chelsea) would finish top 3 comfortably, then there’s Bilbao – top 5-6 (probably better than Spurs), Valencia probably equal/better than us, Liverpool, Everton.

It’s more to do with the fact our league is overrated quality wise. Drama wise, it’s the best. But i’d say the Bundesliga, BBVA and maybe even Serie A have more consistent quality throughout.

I said, would they get away with it, without any recognised defender on the pitch. With a dm at CB and two wingbacks.
I never said their league is weak or whatever.

  • 95 toonLYF // Nov 3, 2012 at 6:28 PM

    Transfer Sage…

Bundesliga – i’d say Dortmund and Bayern could both win our league with points to spare; alot of German teams are powerful teams with injections of pace, 7-8 of those teams would stand out massively in the EPL, and would occupy perhaps 4 out of the top 7 spots.

My point about Serie A is that there’s quality throughout, basically i believe their lesser teams would beat our lesser teams, and their average teams would be pushing on in our top half.
Juve i think could win the EPL, AC have faded, however Roma, Udinese, Inter, Lazio…all fantastic footballing teams with superstars everywhere you look. Underrated league i think.

  • 96 bills-son // Nov 3, 2012 at 6:32 PM

Transfer Sage, what AC had with us was a team totally set up for his game and he had the advantage of being an unknown in the Prem. As you say the burden of carrying a £35M fee and playing at LPool where the team didnt revolve around him has affected him. However, I think that AC’s limitations have been exposed rather than his strengths being developed. I hope the lad finds some form soon or he’ll struggle to justify a place in West Ham’s team.

Changing subject, Shaka Hislop’s caribbean geordie accent is hoot to hear on ESPN. Unlike listening to O’Neill who sounded like someone totally peed off with football in his press conference yesterday. I think O’Neill could be Sunderland’s Strachan, a spent force.

  • 97 tarie4 // Nov 3, 2012 at 6:33 PM

    toonLYF

I disagree, yes barca and Madrid could potentially win the league, but walk it?? I dnt think so.
The premiership is physically demanding and we have specialist long ball teams, who are very physical and have small pitches. Those teams would win the league, but it would be far far from easy.
In Spain most teams play football, they pass it around etc. In England we have teams that are great in the air, have physically strong defenders
Look at the barca Chelsea games. Barca would have to play games like that every week mate, remember there is no winter break, and the carling cup the FA cup and champions league. And with them not having a great deal of CB’s they will find it really really tough.
Yes they could win it. But to say walk it!!! I disagree.

  • 100 Ian Toon // Nov 3, 2012 at 6:40 PM

tarie4- Spot on. As they currently play they would be found out defensively in the PL. They tried very hard to bring in David Luiz from Chelsea who would have been a perfect fit for their passing style of play.

  • 101 Transfer Sage // Nov 3, 2012 at 6:41 PM

    Tarie

I think the winter break is a myth used by English managers.

Barca and real play more games than your average prem league team a season.

So by having 2 weeks off at Christmas means they have their games squashed into a smaller time frame. I personally think it makes little difference as it only seems to affect English players at international tournaments and not an foreign lads in the prem league.

And good point about Chelsea. But not many teams have a defence that good, and also barca created a lot of chances they would normally score.

I agree they would have to play against a more defensive set up here but at the same time they would have the quality to break most down.

Madrid on the other hand would totally walk the league. They have pace, power, skill, flare…they are the most rounded, complete team in the world.

Barca are amazing but their set up is suited for their league ( sensible but still would do a good job in any league, remember in champions league teams park the bus and they inevitably break then down.

  • 102 t00ntime // Nov 3, 2012 at 6:42 PM

Lol barca and real wud not walk our league. Almost every team in the premier league plays driffrent. We dont out class other leagues but constantly changing tactics and playing against rough defenders week in week out. Lots of mid week games etc i wud still back man utd/chelsea to win if barca/real were in our league atleast until they are used to the league.

+ real madrid wud be bankrupt if they played in the epl. I’m sure i read sumwhere that real are backed by spanish banks, which wudnt happen in england

  • 103 Transfer Sage // Nov 3, 2012 at 6:45 PM

    Toontime

Finance would be different as barca and real get 70% of tv money for their league between just themselves.

But I’m more on about style of play.

They play just as many games in a season if not more than English teams so Fitness isn’t an issue.

I remember barca criticised arsenal as fabregas was so much below the fitness levels of their players when he arrived and he claimed to be one of the fitter players at arsenal

  • 104 Magpies-till-d3ath // Nov 3, 2012 at 6:45 PM

A win tomorrow would really kick start our season! Would take us to 6th. The only problem is………. we always play woeful at Anfield!

  • 105 toonLYF // Nov 3, 2012 at 6:48 PM

    tarie –

good points, but i was going on the fact both Real and Barca are very noticably better and more consistent than the current best our league has to offer (City/United/Chelsea) – and just think about how many points those finish with as apposed to the phyical specialist teams you speak of (Stoke, Norwich, West Ham?).

In those Barca/Chelsea matches, Barcelona were clearly the better side, that was there for all to see. Turning your point round, would Chelsea etc get THAT lucky every week. Definitely not.

I definitely stick by the fact our league is overrated due to the high levels of drama. Drama doesn’t mean quality.

Which comes to my final point which has been spoken about by many – How would Barca fair in a cold rainy night at Stoke. They’d simply wipe the floor with them. Quality reigns supreme over playing styles etc, almost every time.

  • 106 tarie4 // Nov 3, 2012 at 6:51 PM

    Transfer Sage

Yes they play more games, but thats not my point is it.
My point is that nearly all teams in the Spanish league play football. They pass and move, Swansea would be right at home there. What separates the EPL from la liga is not the amount of games, but the physicality of it. If U watched the barca Chelsea games, in the last 15-20 mins, barca ran out of ideas and steam. And Chelsea grew into the game and looked comfortable.
My point is, in the EPL we have big strong defenders and big centre forwards and specialist long ball teams and small pitches. Barca would play games like the chelsea one every single week, be it in the league or cup games. I feel they would struggle and be found out.
Yes they might win the league (quality always shows) but it will be very very difficult, they would definitely not walk it.

  • 107 Ian Toon // Nov 3, 2012 at 6:55 PM

Transfer Sage- Do you factor into your thinking the physicality required to perform in the PL. Allied to game scheduling in the PL I don’t really think that you should realistically seek to draw any direct comparison between excelling in European competition and performing at the same level of excellence in our very different league. It’s the old chestnut of Grimsby on a wet Wednesday evening in January. LOL

  • 108 tarie4 // Nov 3, 2012 at 6:57 PM

I do not dispute that the EPL is overrated. I am just saying that barca and Madrid would not find it as easy to win the epl like the la liga. thats all. They would not definitely walk it. Definitely.

Interesting read that, but if U are to use stats comparing last seasons start to this seasons, it kinda undermines ur statistics. By the 9th game last year we had only played arsenal and spurs who were top 4 quality.
This year we have played Chelsea, man U, spurs and Everton who per game create more chances than ur qpr’s scum etc. So its not surprising that teams are creating more chances this term against us than last season after 9 games.

Those are just some weaknesses of that article but an interesting read nonetheless

but we have not played 9 top teams,,,

the prem is not an easy league, but with the players we have,(not talking about league position here) we should be higher up the charts on a lot of things,, we are second bottom only to sunderland, and we all admitted they where a shit team,,

on paper , our squad is good enough to fight for 5th place, along with everton, liverpool, spurs, , in reality we are playing like a team closer to the bottom than the top,,

regardless of what i think of some of our players not being good enough, i think most of us can see that we need our midfield higher up the pitch,,

i think this may help our defence to,

Catchy in Norway I’m with you mate, in my opinion we are playing rubbish with no movement are only really have santon and Ben Arfa looking like they can create something (young ferguson also). That being said we are still in the mixer as it is early days, a win tomorrow and the league starts to look a lot better with a couple of winnable home games next. I’m not negative but I come on this blog to read other Nufc fans views and vent my frustration or air my views, my gripe is that we have some good players in Ben Arfa, santon, cisse and Ba that could all be very lethal but we aren’t creating enough. Imagine how many Ba and cisse could score if we actually looked like we could string five passes together and create something. I think the next game at home is West Ham right? Or is it Swansea then West ham? Anyway whoever it is I hope we really take it to them, all guns blazing.

I am not disputing that. But a win tomorrow and we are 6th playing shit as we are. But thats not an argument I want to get into. I’m just saying stats have weaknesses. For example U say AP sees the stats but does nothing about it etc (re you post at Nov 3, 2012 at 7:10 PM)
But those stats will say Williamson is a better defender than Saylor and is only second to vertogen of spurs in the whole league. But if AP picks him ahead of Saylor tomorrow, half the pple here will moan. (as per past games)

now we are 3 points above the bindippers, but have a look at their stats
    http://forums.liverpoolfc.com/threads/322708-To-all-the-moaners-out-there-the-stats-prove-we-are-a-PL-force

As someone said in the comments there. The most important stat is the points U have on the board.

a win tomorrow and we are a point of fifth. I could not careless (im sure most aggree with me) about how poor our stats are mate.

  • 120 jawballsaswallwell // Nov 3, 2012 at 8:11 PM

Pards can manage the club so long as Magpie from Lithuania picks the team and then everything would be just about hunky dory as far as I can tell.

  • 121 MagpiesFlyHigh // Nov 3, 2012 at 8:12 PM

If every football game was played on paper, things’d be much simpler. We’re not the only side seriously underperforming. Just look at today’s results…Chelski, Citeh for two…

We do have a side capable of playing at top five level. The stats analysis posted on here is shocking.
We are deficient in almost all areas of the game, though the failure to strengthen the back four was always going to catch up with us and now it has … (regardless of the Willo stats he is not top drawer EPL standard). All sides get injuries but a good manager will be allowed to strengthen his squad to cover key areas. The third striker, quality AM backup and at least two in defence as they seem to take more injuries due to the physicality of playing at the back.
MA has gambled on us holding it together till the January sales, and we have not had a truly solid EPL game yet this season.

We deffo need another 3-4 purples. AP has had to make do and mend too much and the holes do show.

We also need the guys to hit form because they have not. Missing on simple passes, poor cross %, 50% ball wins in defence. All poor.
All these are down to player form and not formation, so the “as soon as we play 4-3-3 all the time it’ll all be great’ brigade on here are wrong. You can still play badly in a 4-3-3.

TBH I dunno when we are going to hit a good run of form. Tomorrow would be great. We will be knocking on the door of top 6 with another 3 points. Forget our past Anfield record and just go for it HWTL !

  • 122 catchy in norway // Nov 3, 2012 at 8:14 PM

i agree , stats can make a player look good or bad, a team look great or shit,

points on the board, do count for a lot, and yes i can see he is doing things to make sure we dont get beat, and that is the point i guess, i dont feel he does enough to try and win,, a 1 goal cushing is not a good cushing, and it sure as hell isnt with our defence

  • 123 breno95 // Nov 3, 2012 at 8:25 PM

We all know that there will be an abundance of stats out there but they all count for nowt. What I am more interested in is seeing the best 11 being sent out to win games in a positive manner and ultimately getting as many points as possible.
Back 5 picks should pick itself IMO and that includes Saylor and Simpson.
As for the midfield due to the absence of Tiote I would want to see Anita & Cabaye in the centre with Jonas (sorry to all the guti bashers) and because we need pace Obertan on the right. HBA given a free role to play behind Ba (if fit) or Cisse.
If either Willo, Perch, Sammy, Fergie make starting 11 we will lose and I truly hope Shola gets no where near the pitch or at the very most gets the last 10 minutes.

    catchy in norway

That is very TRUE, and I would love us to win a game, having played the other team of the park. And it is very disappointing and frustrating watching us play atm, but im sure our performances will pick up soon (fingers crossed tomorrow) but U are very right.

    Breno

Agree with jonas who is underrated for the work he does but imo perch is the only one able to effectively deputise for tiote imo. Anita has done nothing to suggest he can do it in there yet, while perch has always done well and gegs stuck in, so cant see him missing out. Hate to be negative but i can see liverpool finding form against us as usual and a draw would be great result. Hope cisse puts in a real shift if he plays. Im getting annoyed with his lethargic efforts and failure to even challenge for high balls

That would ideally seem to be the way to go, know and pick your best 11 and show a little more tactical faith in them to go out and outscore the opposition. The problem is of course that injuries and suspensions weaken the side almost every game and the replacements aren’t at the same level, and therefore we get a more conservative approach.
Even so, I’d rather see us play a more expansive game at the greater risk of dropping points, more fun.

I would be very happy if we turned up, played as a team for 90 minutes, fighting for every chance and even half chance.
There should be no let up in our intensity, commitment or desire to win the game.

If, after 90 minutes of playing as well as we possibly could, the result, whatever it is, would be acceptable.

If they turn up and play like we did against WBA then Pardew should take a long hard look in the mirror and question why he is failing to inspire the team, motivate the players. The buck stops with him after all!!

I am not proposing he is sacked by the way!!

Agree with taking few more risks. Better to lose 2 and win one than to grab a couple of draws by being negative. But its a sound plan to get the team looking solid, surely at some stage the talent we have in the team will click into gear and start scoring again

Overall Anita is a better footballer and has actual only appeared a total of 6 times since he signed. Not alot for many to form a proper opinion. The only way for his quality to be seen is for AP to play the lad. Good players can play in a new team from the off as long as their manager has the guts to play them.
    Jaws
We have a fully fit squad. Slight niggle with Ba and 1 suspension re Tiote so AP can put out the strongest 11 possible. Willo, Shola, Sammy, Perch are not players that form our strongest 11.

I think we can take allot of comfort that AP is aware of the issue when it comes to performances.
Not many actually do that and try to make excuses instead.
You could argue that he does that when blaming the EL games, but he lays a reason to it, a reason that is perfectly understandable.
But what is important here, is that he still does not think the performance levels are acceptable.

We should be glad he thinks that and that he still is working this from all angles to figure it out.

AP is a good coach, keep the faith, he’ll turn it around.

Good point graeme. Too often we go to anfield already beaten . Its a bit on inferiority complex i think. Let just get at them have a real go. If we get a goal their fans will get nervy and i sense they are about to turn on rodgers. If we just try to defend they will break us down eventually so lets take them on. We are the better side at the minute i reckon

  • 132 jawballsaswallwell // Nov 3, 2012 at 9:02 PM

Yeah, we have an almost fully fit squad and an away day at Anfield is a tremendous footballing occasion, so I really hope we go there to play our part in an open game and go for the win. Let’s back ourselves when we can and take on the likes of Liverpool head on. If we did that i’d accept whatever result we get.

  • 133 Graeme // Nov 3, 2012 at 9:13 PM

If we intend to target a top 5 finish – I think a Champions League place is still a step too far – we have to attack our major competitors for the points.

They are not going to roll over for us, that is for sure!!! They are competing for the same points; the same trophy’s; the same money!!!
