Liverpool vs Newcastle – Match Preview

If Newcastle do not play well this afternoon at Anfield, we really have no excuses, because we’ve had a full uninterrupted week of training with the full squad available at Benton, to fully prepare for the game at Liverpool.

There’s a big prize if Newcastle can indeed win this game, because it will be the first league win at Anfield since April of 1994 when we won 2-0, and it will also see Newcastle in 6th position in the league table tonight.

It’s another important game for Newcastle today, and it gives us the chance to see just how good Newcastle are this season, and we are currently in 10th place in the league table with 13 points form our first 9 games.

That’s 6 points short of where we were last season after 9 games, but a win today would make it 7 points from 3 games, since we were dismantled by Manchester United at St. James’ Park 3-0 – a very disappointing result for us.

Demba Ba will have a fitness test shortly before this afternoon’s game, but we’ll assume for purposes of team selection that he is not fit.

Ryan Taylor, Dan Gosling and Haris Vuckic are all out with long-term injuries, so apart from those three, Demba Ba is the only injury doubt today, but of course Cheick Tiote will be serving the second game of a three match suspension for being sent off at Sunderland.

Here’s a side that Alan could start today with the 7 subs:

Krul
Simpson Coloccini (c) Williamson Santon
Gutierrez Cabaye Perch Ben Arfa
Ameobi (Sh) Cisse
Subs: Harper Taylor (S) Ferguson Bigirimana Vurnon Obertan Ameobi (Sa)

So there’s no place on the bench for players like Mehdi Abeid, Sylvain Marveaux and Romain Amalfitano, but they could all get a chance in Belgium on Thursday night, when we play Club Brugge in the Europa League Group D game.

The keys to the game are that the defense can be solid against some good players in the Liverpool side, and especially against Luis Suarez, who is always dangerous, and the Uruguayan will likely fall down in the penalty area at the slightest touch from a Newcastle player – so we’ll have to watch for that.

And if Ba doesn’t play it’ s a big opportunity to see Shola and Papiss in action together, and both have something to prove, and hopefully Papiss can add to his one Premier League goal he scored last week, and Shola has still to score in the league this season, although he does have one goal to his credit this season.

We like Shola up front, because as we mentioned before last week’s game, he can head on the balls and set up Cisse or Ba with some decent chances, and he did that last week for Ba.

And we have to hope the Papiss Cisse will be able to take any chances he gets today.

Newcastle have everything to play for this afternoon, and we can bury that stat of no league wins at Anfield since April of 1994, when Kevin Keegan was manager.

And we could see Newcastle in 6th place in the league this afternoon, assuming we pick up all 3 points – and that’s where we need to be.

Let us know how you think the game will go this afternoon.

If Pardew does start that team we will get beat, and he is a liar, in regards to how he would like to play the game.

It will be a long afternoon if we concede early. We’re not great at coming from behind.

I don’t think Liverpool are that bad. Apart from the swans game, they seem to be clicking recently. And I don’t need to talk about our record at Anfield.

Guys, I’m thinking of heading over to the home game against Liverpool at the end of April. What would the chances be of getting tickets for this game? I don’t want to go ahead and book flights and then not be able to get match tickets.

Can’t see anything other than a defeat. Always have bad starts at Anfield and chase the game. 1-3?

Saying Liverpool is awful is pretty much tarnishing us. They drew with City, lost to Arsenal and Utd and should of beaten Everton away aswell. We should of lost to Everton so we’d be on the same points?

We have played poor every game this season so far and without Tiote I can’t see us getting anything.

Simmo will get ruined by Sterling today and you just know Suarez will score. I hate Liverpool but that are not shite and play better football than us currently.

That’s a certain loss with that team IMO.
Liverpool want to control the midfield with a 3CM’s.
Gerrard is good but not as good as he used to be, Sahin was excellent at Dortmund but haven’t saw too much of him since he went to Madrid and now Liverpool. Allen is one of those players who keep things ticking but have no real impact on the game and is vastly overrated.

Bambi is a legend in his own lunchtime, no doubt about it. However, there is absolutely NO WAY he should be anywhere near our starting 11 for this game. He is well past his “Sell-by” date and does not have 90 minutes left in him.

As an impact substitute, he can be superb. Fresh off the bench with 15 – 20 minutes left, against tired defenders, he is not a player defenders want to see.

Today is a big day for Pardew – he has no available excuses, no place to hide. He has had the team for a full SEVEN Days, with no interruptions, which is what he wanted.

He has had every opportunity to prepare his tactics for attack, defence, free kicks for & against, what happens if they score first or if we score first, etc etc. There should be nothing now left to chance, with every player fully aware of what they are doing.

If we don’t get in Liverfool’s faces from the off, hastle them, push them, impose ourselves on the game its down to Pardew. If we concede a goal and heads drop – its down to Pardew.

As long as we fight for every ball, play as if their lives depended on it, give at least 101% for every second of the game, then I, for one, will be happy, whatever the result and I’m sure most fans would agree.

If there is anything less than total commitment, for the full duration of the game, then Pardew needs to take a long, hard look in the mirror.

Add to fact we always concede 3 goals down there. 🙁
We need to put in a good performance today and we can beat them even though it will be very difficult.

This is our best chance of winning there in a long time. We’ll have to score atleast 3 goals though. 😉

We’ll get beat. We’ve been poor all season and if Shola is the best we have then there is little chance of an improvement. Shola should be nowhere near our first eleven.

Simmo and Willo being dropeed would be great news.

The pool/Everton game was very even both attacked brilliantly. I didn’t say Pool were better but they did score a winner but an awful linesman ruled it out.

We are just as awful as them or as good depending how you look at it. Although it would be nice to see if we could string a few passes together today.

    Krul
    Simpson Saylor Colo Santon
    Cabaye Anita Jonas
    HBA Cisse Fergie

I feel this team shows some intent that we want to play and win.. We only have one ball hoofer in Simpson and everyone else plays the ball on the ground.
Fergie can actually cross a ball and has assisted for 2 of Cisse’s goals this season. Something Jonas at LW never does anymore.
Their defence is shaky, abit like ours so it can be got at. That’s why I’ve chosen such an attacking line up.

However this will be the usual predictable team.

    Krul
    Simpson Willo/Saylor Colo Santon
    HBA Cabaye Perch Jonas
    Shola Cisse

It all depends who plays centre half for me.

Im not a Williamson hater, but if it’s Suarez against Williamson we’ll get beat,in my opinion..

If it’s Taylor & Colo im confident we’ll get a result..

    kirkyman,
The game will most likely be televised making it easier to get tickets, joining the membership scheme will guarantee yourself a ticket but probably not worth the 25 quid if your not catching many games, but imo it shouldn’t be a problem getting tickets for this game especially if we don’t spend anything come January.

he may not be the player he was, but he did win so many things for the club almost by himself if that makes sense

Not going to happen. I think with Obertan and HBA cutting in, with Ferguson and Santon providing natural width, we’d have a good balance and we’d be dangerous on the break.

well with a team like that i get a feeling we will loose because again only HBA will be doing the chances so therefore liverpool will over crowd him just like any other team which leaving us with only 1 other choice hoof ball.
so if i were pardew i would go with this team
    _________krul______
    santon_colo_saylor_fergie
    _____perch___jonas____
    HBA__cabaye____sammy
    _________ba_________
what this will allow is much more of a threat from both sides also both perch and jonas can cover FB while they are getting forward and because we have HBA sammy fergie and santon who like getting forward there will be much less hoof ball and a lot more passing and cabaye aswell will not have to be used as much in holding midfielder he can help both wide men through the centre.

I hope we don’t treat this like the Swansea game where we won 2-0 thanks to papiss. We sat back and waited to counter. I would hope to see us get in their faces rather than sit back as they dont have the passing talents of swansea. I fwe press we’ll make them look like idiots.

I reallly hope Pards realises this but ifear he won’t.

But whoever turns out, it’s the intensity and desire that’s the most important ingredient that needs to return. Smother them, go toe-to-toe, just come away knowing we’ve given it our best shot. I don’t identify with a cautious, conservative NUFC, and more importantly, it hasn’t been working!

If that 11 starts this game it will be a long, hard, painful 90 minutes to watch. It amazes me how many managers of NUFC appear to rate Shola.
Obviously opinions vary and I get that but we have good players and we should be taking the game to them today.
Back 5 should (now all fit) pick itself including Simpson and Saylor to start with Santon at LB. A midfield 4 of Oba, Cabaye, Anita & Jonas. HBA playing just behind Ba (if passed fit). Oba picked for pace.

well paps if he constantly insist on having a midfield of
    HBA cabaye perch/tiote/bigi jonas
then next summer if cabaye or benny is sold it should be pardew who is at fault because he will be who has cost us the chance of progressing in the league and iMO those players would rather be in a team who goes for a win rather than sitting back and hoofing it.

Anyone who thinks Liverpool are poor etc just dont know what theyare on about. They will have loads of ball today, so best i can see is 2-2. The team needs to find its mojo, fast. Isnt that why we gave our manager the longest contract in premiership history???
