We wondered when it was going to happen, because he’s been playing so well for Newcastle United this season, and it’s really good news that Davide Santon has been recalled to the full Italy squad.
Davide Santon – playing against Liverpool last Sunday
Davide has been called up for the friendly game against France next Wednesday night in Parma, and the 21 year-old gets a chance to add to the 7 full caps he already has for Italy, and it could be he’s up against his team-mate Yohan Cabaye next Wednesday.
Santon has played for all the Italian Youth sides and he captained the U21 s and picked up 17 caps at that level.
And the 6’1″ defender made his senior debut when he was just 18 in June of 2009 in a friendly against Northern Ireland, that was played in Pisa, and a young Shane Ferguson also played in that game for Northern Ireland – Italy won the game 3-0.
Davide played the whole match and put in a solid performance, but the last time he represented the full Italian side was early last year, before he joined the Magpies, and this is his first senior call-up since joining Newcastle United for £5M from Inter-Milan in the summer of last year.
There’s no doubt that Davide is now a better player than when he joined Newcastle, and great credit for that goes to Alan Pardew and the Newcastle coaches, who have handled the lad expertly, and of course credit also goes to the young Italian, who listens carefully to what Alan Pardew tells him.
Davide’s turning out to be another excellent buy for Newcastle (thanks to Graham Carr for spotting him), and of course this lad has great potential, and he will keep improving as he continues to wear the famous colors of Newcastle United.
This is good news for Newcastle and great news for Davide Santon.
