Things are not looking too good at the moment, and although Cheick Tiote has served his three match ban and will return against Swansea, it looks like Yohan Cabaye may miss out with injury, and if course Jonas Gutierrez has already been ruled out because of the knee injury he picked up last Sunday, in the defeat at home to West Ham.
Papiss Cisse – could be barred from playing on Saturday
Yohan Cabaye missed the France game last night – a 2-1 win over Italy – because he suffered a stomach muscle injury during training with the French squad, and he is now doubtful for the Newcastle game on Saturday.
And Papiss Cisse pulled out of the Senegal squad this week, and it seems that Senegal are questioning why he is able to play on Saturday, when he was unfit to play in mid-week.
Well the reason is simple – because he wasn’t fit for Wednesday but he will be fit for Saturday – and minor injuries are like that.
But Senegal may invoke the FIFA five-day rule, which means Cisse would be unable to play on Saturday – but that would be so daft – if that actually happens.
Alan Pardew had this to say about the Cisse situation:
“We feel we have covered all the bases to give them the information, but they seem not to have received it, so we are in discussions with Senegal and the FA about his availability for Saturday.”
The five day rule may be OK for competitive International matches, but hardly for friendly games, when players have to travel huge distances to play a game, and sometimes don’t even get to play – and the games are squeezed between two Premier League weekends.
Fabricio Coloccini will miss the game on Saturday, but he was in good form last night in getting his 35th cap and helping Argentina to a 0-0 draw in Saudi Arabia, but he is serving a three match ban for being sent off at Liverpool.
So it could be that we’ll be without Coloccini, Gutierrez, Cabaye and Cisse on Saturday, and the Argentine pair will certainly miss the game.
If Cisse is ruled out we have Shola Ameobi, who will be traveling back from Miami today, after coming on as a sub in the Nigeria 3-1 win against Venezuela and picking up his first cap ever for Nigeria, the country of his birth.
Let’s hope both Cabaye and Cisse can play on Saturday – we need the win.
