Newcastle Striker On Five Man Short List For Top Award

Demba Ba is on a five-man shortlist for the 2012 African player of the year award, which will be named on december 20th.

Demba Ba – scores against West Brom

The other four players Didier Drogba (Shanghai Shenhua), Yaya Touré (Manchester City), Alex Song (Barcelona) and Marseille’s Andre Ayew as the contenders for the award, with the Confederation of African Football having just cut the list from 10 to five – so Ba made the cut.

The one player who did not play in the Premier League last season was Ayew, and of course Drogba helped Chelsea to the European Champions League trophy before moving to Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua, and Alex Song was sold by the Gunners to Barcelona in the summer.

Yaya Touré was last season’s winner, and he seems to be the favorite this year too, and Didier Drogba won the award twice, in 2006 and 2009.

Samuel Eto has won the award four times, but is not among the top five this year.

Here’s a list of the previous winners of the award.

It would be nice if Demba remembers how to control a football tomorrow, that would certainly help the team a fair bit, second touch is a tackle lately.
