Gutierrez, Ferguson And Cisse All Start – Ranger On Bench

There are five changes to the side that started against Maritimo on Thursday night, and Jonas Gutierrez returns to captain the side today at Southampton.

Mike Williamson comes back into the side to partner Steven Taylor, since Coloccini has one more game to serve in his three match ban, and Tiote also returns to central midfield, after being suspended for the game against Maritimo.

Shane Ferguson is back on the left wing, and it could be that Demba Ba will play slightly behind Papiss Cisse up front today.

It looks like Jonas Gutierrez will play out on the right wing today, with Anita and Tiote in central midfield, and Nile Ranger is on the bench, and the 21 year-old could even get his first appearance for Newcastle for a long time today.

We had thought Sylvain Marveaux may have kept his place in the side after a decent performance on Thursday night, when he scored his first goal for the club, but the Frenchman is on the bench.

And it’s good to see James Perch on the bench after his thigh injury, and he could well get a run out in the second half.

Seven players in the side played some part on Thursday night in the 1-1 draw against Maritimo.

Teams:

Southampton (4-2-3-1): Paulo Gazzaniga; Nathaniel Clyne, Jose Fonte, Maya Yoshida, Luke Shaw; Morgan Schneiderlin, Jack Cork; Jason Puncheon, Adam Lallana (c), Gaston Ramírez; Rickie Lambert
Substitutes: Kelvin Davis; Jos Hooiveld, Steven Davis, James Ward-Prowse, Emmanuel Mayuka, Guly Do Prado, Jay Rodriguez

Newcastle United (4-4-2): Tim Krul; Danny Simpson, Mike Williamson, Steven Taylor, Davide Santon; Jonas Gutierrez (c), Vurnon Anita, Cheick Tiote, Shane Ferguson; Demba Ba, Papiss Cisse
Substitutes: Steve Harper, James Tavernier, James Perch, Gael Bigirimana, Sylvain Marveaux, Sammy Ameobi, Nile Ranger

We need to pick up something at St. Mary’s this afternoon.

the fact ranger is on the bench is the best evidence yet of how small the squad is.

    first impresions are very poor

looks like he is going there not to lose

4 defenders 3 DMC fergy left wing

    Cisse BA up top

so we can expect lots of long balls from simpson williamson tatlor krul

we can expect only attacking on our left side

we will get beat with this team and this formation

    Oh….My….God…….

That midfield 4 is possibly the least threatening I have ever seen from us, no goal threat from anyone of them, none will attempt to get on the end of a cross, looks like its down to Ba once again

Should have had Marveaux and Sammy in IMO.

This is not going to be pretty!!!!!

now what ever matty says here your gona pull him to bits,

jonas should not be playing, FULL STOP

he is no longer a left winger, and seeing as fergy is playing why should he get into midfield? ahead of bigi

jonas no longer gets all the fouls he used to , and captain to,, such a shame

its playing jonas that will get him sacked

Well, with all these injuries, this more about courage than play today…

So the line up doesn’t really matter i guess, but i too, should have had Marv.

Typical unimaginitive pardew, 2 up top with no one getting beyond them at any point. Long ball footy here we come. This is another nail is Pardewasaurusus coffin.

WTF is pardew doing… marveax should start, so should sammy screw guti and cisse and go 433, with anita, tiote and ferguson in the middle, as an improvised creative player and sammy on the right, marv on the left and ba up front.. THIS MAKES SENSE AGAINST A TEAM AT THE VERY BOTTOM!!

Those of you that are saying it is a crap line up talk like Pardew had a choice. The time has picked itself, what are the alternatives?
    They’re aren’t many if any.

Every time the ball is launched from back to front, see how many of the midfield are looking for the flick on or knock down.

Every time it is crossed from the left, see how many times Tiote, Anita or Jonas are in the box. Ditto when it is on the right.

Anita and Tiote cant work as a 2, neither is the box to box player we need in there. We dont have one sadly but they could work in a 4231 with Marveaux or whoever ahead of them behind Ba

Anyway, now Iv got that off my chest, I really hope Im completely wrong about this and we are fantastic, Jonas is dribbling past men for fun, Fergie is arriving into the box to score, we arent just launching it to the front 2 with a 30 yard gap back to the midfield…….

That’s a side set up for the long ball system if i’ve ever seen one. I’d usually judge after the match, but sadly i can’t see anything but standard procedure being resumed with that line up today.

so we have marveaux and only him in hoping for creativity….and he’s on the bench.

if i were him i’d be on the first flight back to france in january

every season there is one clown in the league

this season its pardew, he is like the pandpiper, with his loyal band of followers on this blog, he can do no wrong in there eyes

they only see the problems above him

all you ewho think the problems are the 2 fat men above him ,, go and do some maths will ye, that stuff is for accountants, not football fans

football fans want to watch football, 99% of us no we will not win anything so the one thing we would like is to be entertained with good football

Do we have anyone fit that can do that? Maybe marv i suppose in front of anita n tiote?

    TGT
Fergie should be allowed no where near a CAM position he just runs round lost like a headless chicken and is far too lightwieght?

agree about fergie. should be nowhere near CM, and, if i’m completely honest, the starting line-up at this point in his career.

and tads, if he’s dead-set on starting jonas, at least put him in front of tiote and anita. god knows nothing forward is gonna go through them
