There is a report on the Italian web-site Calcio Mercato, that Roma manager Zdenek Zeman is preparing a £6.5M bid for Newcastle’s top Italian International full-back Davide Santon in January.
Davide Santon – Roma interested again
Davide has been one of the star men for Newcastle this season, and he was only recently recalled to the full Italian squad, and he’s finding his top form playing for the Magpies, and on Sunday he was our Man of the Match in the 2-0 defeat at Southampton.
But the Roma manager has been keen on the 21 year-old for a while now, and there were reports in the summer that Roma had contacted Newcastle about doing a deal for the 7 times capped Italian, but they were given no encouragement by Newcastle.
Davide is a versatile player and is equally at home in either full-back position, but Newcastle would be crazy to let this player leave the club, even though it would be around a £1.5M profit on him in just 18 months.
But Newcastle are struggling at the moment, and it makes no sense to sell one of our best players, and further weaken the side.
Indeed, we are hoping that Mike Ashley will open up the check book in January, and bring some new players into the squad, since the squad has been decimated this season by injury, and in the main that’s been due to the extra European games telling on a small squad.
But Santon has said many times that he is very happy on Tyneside, and of course he also has a Geordie girlfriend, and he’s in no hurry to leave Newcastle, and the lad also has an excellent working relationship with manager Alan Pardew, who he thinks is a top coach.
We wouldn’t be at all surprised if Roma do come in for Santon in January, but they’ll have to pay an awful lot more than £6.5M – they’d have to pay out silly money – if Mike Ashley was to ever agree to sell the top youngster.
We don’t think Davide is going anywhere, any time soon from Newcastle.

Comment #1Those cultural snobs can’t believe he’s happy living in Newcastle, when he could live in Rome.
Hang on. Neither do I. He’s off!

It will be end of the world if we let Santon leave and Give 5 yrs new contract to Simmo.

Comment #3Doubtful, he says he’s happy, has settled down, has a gf here, and I doubt she’d want to move to Italy.

Comment #4Ed, I wish you’d stop doing this. You keep putting up dodgy articles like this, quoting foreign websites like Calcio Mercato as your source, as if that gives the story a bit more credibility. You often include a link to the home page of the website in question (as you have done in this article) but you NEVER put a link to any article which supports your story. Why is that, I wonder?
It’s fairly obvious that you have picked up this “story” from an article put up by nufcfans.co.uk a few hours ago. They quoted Calcio Mercato as being their source, so you have simply quoted it as being yours. But if you had bothered to check out the Calcio Mercato website for yourself, you would have discovered that there is NO current story linking Santon with Roma or anybody else, and certainly no mention of a £6.5M bid.

Comment #5@chris_g, Ed is only informing on speculation. Santon-to-Roma has received a fair bit of media coverage or at least enough to separate it from outright bogus fabrications by fans to troll.
It may be heresay but that’s what transfer rumors are made of afterall. Surprise transfers do happen.

Comment #6Chris_g Just complains about everything we writes. It’s his only contribution to the blog.
If people want only official stories read the official nufc website.
If, as 99% of people here do, you want the rumour and speculation as well as team news, read this fantastic site.

Comment #7Transfer and Jesper- good morning to you both .
Quite right . Ed does a great job. Some people just like to moan. Santon and Coloccini plus two additions in January and we’ll have a solid technically sound defence. Yippee .

Comment #11I think the club is fine, we hit a bad patch of form so what.
Our squad could use a few new players, that’s the same as anywhere else. Carr will find some gems soon and I’m sure they’ll be some movement in January.
The only real problem is our style of play/tactics/formation which isn’t that difficult to fix if your manager is clever enough and I think he just about is. It seeems obvious to me that there is much room for improvement there, hopefully he’ll sort it out soon otherwise 8 year contract or not I don’t think Ashley would accept us slipping into a relegation fight.

Comment #18Bargain for 6.5million in my mind, always been good, didnt understand last year when Pardew was keeping him out of the side, obviously Pardew lovers would disagree.
He is such a Rolls Royce of a player.
No Danny Simpson though. One of the mysteries of all time why he is still getting a game, clrealy doesnt give a shit as he is in a contract dispute and will soon be leaving. Get Tavernier he is the future.

The most defensive static midfield in the history of the premier league, and yes you got it 442, with Ba playing that ‘false 10’ role he is so adept at.
What a laugh the manager is, he is taking us down, only Cabaye and Benny can save us.

What’s the crack?
Great to see some positivity on the blog again. good job guys. Some are saying that this season proves what they have thought all along, but I just want to say, it hasn’t yet. Jump on your bandwagon, shout from your rooftops, do what you like, a lot of fans still have faith. That isn’t to say we’re right, we can’t know that now, but this shows the club hitting a rough patch for now, be concerned, but this mass panic and doomsday stuff is hysteria. I am willing to chnage my tune down the line, but there is still some way to go.
Talking of doomsday…..Hello Prophet. How will you be spending your final days on the blog? Who does “he” want you to spread his message through this Newcastle blog? Is it the end of the world or the world as we know it? Hope you’re well.

Comment #21Check….Do you think tav is already better than Simmo as an all round player? I would say he has got the potential, but wouln’t say he’s ready yet. When he has played he’s shown glimpses of the player he can be, but nowhere near a games worth. Do you think Simmo is so bad that it’s worth just using Tav regardless of whether he’s ready or not, in a view to bring him along quicker?

Positivity?! No, there will be no such thing on this blog. Pardew will get us relegated to the blue square bet league, we are going to fielda team full of 11 defenders, and the world is going to end on Saturday apparently.
Not much to be happy about now is there.
Apologise and start negging .

I bet there are fans of Ajax and Marseilles today writing on their respective blogs quoting this blog and complaining about moneybags Newcastle United stealing their players eg Miralem Sulejmani and Loic Remy respectively.
We have some very good players (and some rubbish ones!) who will attract the attention of other clubs but nearly all clubs are in this situation. Clubs in mainland Europe have an added difficulty in that Premiership clubs like ourselves pay much higher wages and can tempt (some say steal) players away from their clubs.

Comment #25I wonder if the answer is under our noses all the time. I’d love to see Beardo my favourite all time player given a go. We’d see some cracking passing and moving football. No route 1 in a 442 with players out of position and demotivated. Hughton should have given him a chance as number 2 instead of that dinosaur calderwood. Cue abuse from the inbetweener wannabes
and patronising know it alls.
Fight the fight real Catchy.

Comment #26Wizard….I have been an Ashley and a Pardew apologist (or at least called one), but I will never apologise for being positive. I may be wrong and will acknowledge that as and when, but I wont apologise for being positive, it just doesn’t make sense…to me at least.
Soundoid wrote a nice comment about his first ever game, the day he fell in love with the toon….that’s why we’re all here, because we love the club. I get people are unhappy, we all are, but ffs, is some of this not a little extreme?

Comment #27If Sammy and Fergie start at Stoke I won’t be able to bear to watch.
Good young players worthy of the occasional cameo in EPL games that are already won. That’s fine, but not the hurly burly of battle against hardened pro’s on a Wednesday night at the Brittania Stadium. They’re more likely to start greetin’ than contribute to a competitive Toon performance.
