This Player Is Now So Important For Newcastle

4:08 pm, Tuesday, November 27th, 2012 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 368 Comments

With Yohan Cabaye ruled out now until February, the man who is taking his place in the Newcastle side, and by the stats is the third most creative player at the club right now behind Cabaye and Ben Arfa – is Vurnon Anita, and he now become a really important player in central midfield for Newcastle United.

Vurnon Anita – after scoring wonder goal at Club Brugge

Vurnon had said when he arrived in the summer from Ajax, that he wanted to play as many games as possible for Newcastle this season, and it looks like he’ll get his wish.

And it’s good to see that the Dutch International is starting to find his feet in English football,  and teh 23 year-old has looked so much better in the last few games,  that he did at the start of the season.

We’ll have to rely on Anita, and Ben Arfa when he returns in a couple of weeks time, to create the chances for strikers like Papiss Cisse, Demba Ba and Shola Ameobi to score the goals that we’ll need.

Vurnon is a gifted technical player, and you could see what wonderful technique he has when he rifled in that goal at Club Brugge, and we need some more of that type of shooting from the 5 times capped Dutch international.

How Newcastle fare in the next two or three months will depend a lot on how well Vurnon can adapt as the creative central midfield player for Newcastle in the months ahead.

We have to hope he exceeds expectations and becomes a Newcastle star in the absence of Yohan Cabaye, and if that happens we should be higher up in the league table when Yohan does finally return to the side in February.

Here’s hoping. 😀

At least VA is starting to look the part now. Hopefully he will keep the form of the last couple of games (We can live without the overall results like!) and keep improving.

    No one is safe.

The only way to guarentee another chance is not through belief, but through repenting for crimes commited against the diety that offered knowledge like an olive branch of peace but got war in return.

Beatrice was but a man, yet when the day comes all that we leave is a legacy. the legacy of Beattie was one of truth but he was too weak to in the end.

we will all burn for what we denied ourselves

    the end is nigh

Yes as long as he’s actually pushed further up and not sitting back with tiote!!!

Ah whats the use we aren’t going to win, might as well accept relegation and be done with it 🙂

    It’s all Obertans fault.

    Him & Pardew.

  • 9 SupaToonKid // Nov 27, 2012 at 4:14 PM

Pards will not do this but I’d go for this side vs. Stoke:

    Simpson, Williamson, Collocini, Santon;
    Perch, Tioté;
    Marveaux, Anita, Jonas;

Subs: Harper, Tavernier, Ferguson, Bigirimana, Obertan, Sammy, Cissé

    Obertans bringing us bad luck.

We DO NOT do “free”!! Lambs arse stated many times and went into print on this issue – some of our most expensive signings were FREE, except they weren’t, really!!! We all thought at the time that a “Free signing” was actually a “Free Signing” but that delusion was brutally corrected by MD Dekka – oh ye of little faith lol

This is a 4-2-3-1, but with Anita playing higher up in a box to box role. And call me crazy, but the best we have looked in attack is with Shola holding up the ball and distributing. If AP insists on playing hoof ball, Put Shola in the middle. Not sure when he will be back, but he is one of our better passers and creators..

Also, now is the time for Marveaux to shine. Ferguson just isn’t getting it done.

We obviously have a stronger squad than last season. Cabaye and the others have a years experience in the pl. And if U look at the team and bench against spurs and compare it to the one that started against arsenal last season, it absolutely beggers belief when someone says our squad is now weaker. I do not understand that reasoning at all. Could someone who thinks we are weaker elaborate for me please.

  • 31 jimiley // Nov 27, 2012 at 4:28 PM

The most important player at NUFC is Jonas. When he plays well we normally win. His defensive cover and dangerous crosses will help us move up the league. Provided he platys well!!!!

    Slank // Sep 1, 2012 at 8:45 AM

For a comparison and putting things into perspective, take our nearest rivals Spurs as an example.

They lost arguably their best two players in VDV and Modric and we kept all ours. So whilst it may appear that they have done great business all they have done is replace those they have lost and it may take time for the new players to bed in.

How about ManCity. They have added to their squad, as they can afford it as they have a bottomless pit of money, but how many of their new players will play regularly.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we add to our squad in the winter transfer window.

I’m quite happy with the clubs business as we have some fantastic and much sought after players in Tiote, Cabaye, Ba, Cisse, Krul and Colo.

I have been impressed with Anita, Bigi (and only 18 years of age!) and Amalfitano. The only player I was sad to see go was Guthrie but he would never have replaced Tiote or Cabaye.

    Score 7 out of 10

It’s all about what you view as success. To a and most reasonable people Chelsea are currently successful.

To abramovich the champions league is the main thing. He won it last year, spent 80 mill in the summer and looks like going out in the group stage.

To abramovich that int success, he wants it every year. Therefore no manager will be safe at Chelsea as its impossible to any cup every year never mind the champions league.

Also, have been reading last nights comments and please please someone tell me!!! How is arsenal a stronger side than last season?? The lost vpersie and song,?? Carzola is good yes.. But poldoski?? He only scores for Germany. The French guy?? Remember chamaki tearing the French league before arsenal bought him.

Spurs?? They lost 2 worldclass players!!! If modric played against us. We would have lost. Spurs had no creativity on that day. Vdv scored 24 goals and 16 assists in 2 years. And they replaced him with sigderson, (who I believe was good at Swansea cuz they built the team around him) dembele is good yes, but can U compare him to vdv and modric?? Spurs are in noway stronger than last season. If anyone saw the westbrom spurs game. Vertigen was caught out for pace and strengh by lukaku. ( thats the reason avb v us played gallas. BA and Cisse would have had a field day.
I will not mention adebayo as he was at spurs last season.

    Liverpool have weakened
Everton pretty much have the same team as last year. So how have the strengthened again?? They just have had a great start to the season.

I believe pple are just moaning for the sake of it.

I also read the argument that we were lucky this season as arsenal where shit, spurs lost the plot and Chelsea were rubbish?? Lads, look the the past few seasons league standings and it will show U that a team that got 70 points where normal guranteed champions league footie. A team that got between 62-68 got 5th or sixth.

Have a look urself lads.. It was no fluke. Spurs had by their previous standards a normal season in the points the had at the end of the season, so to arsenal. They got their normal points tally as the previous few seasons. I dnt get that argument too.

If a few months back NUFC fans were told come the 1st September we had not sold ANY of our big names, signed 3/4 new players, of which one is a Dutch International midfielder for just £6.2m….everyone would have been happy!!!!!!

Of course our squad is stroner than last season FFS!!!!!

S.Taylor is back, Marveaux is back. We have both the Demba’s from the start of the season (People seem to forget we just had Ba as our main striker for the first 5 months of last season!!) Players like Santon, Cabaye, Cisse will only get better after adjusting to the Premier League, our younger group of players will be better also….

Some ‘supporters’ need to get a grip!

  • 41 Les Grossman // Nov 27, 2012 at 4:32 PM

Pardew should not be apoportioned all the blame here.
The Upper managment need to come out and take some of the flack!

Pardew asked for 3-4 quality players.
    He got 3-4 cover players!!

If we had signed Douglas, Debuchy and Maybe De-Jong, I reckon we would not be in our current predicament.
For Me and I said this at the Time….Anita was a total waste of funds, I have seen nothing to change my OPINION of this.

Bigi is twice the player of anita and will deputise for Tiotie no probs.

They would have been the ideal!! Forget Amalfitiano and douglas, money in wages and fees would have been better added to Douglas and or Debuchy!

Agree that we’re stronger, happy with the business ethos of the club and trust under the current regime that we’ll still be a club and a stronger club for many years and not do a Rangers or Pompey, can’t say the same for others who keep paying stupid fees and wages. Be interesting on UEFAs stance on financial fair play and what penalties will be incurred because I don’t see how the likes of Chelsea man city qpr and spurs can balance their expenditure….just a thought! With keeping our top players, the youngsters one year on(krul, santon etc) the impressive Bigi, Amalfitano the “new” signing of Marveuax(it’s like a new signing just hope he stays fit) I honestly feel we’re in good shape and don’t be surprised if we don’t bring in Debuchy and Douglas in January just like we did with Cisse when we held our nerve and got a cracking deal! So yeah there maybe disgruntled fans but I trust Pardew, Ashley, Llambias and Carr. Howay the Toon!

  • 43 jimiley // Nov 27, 2012 at 4:32 PM

Our squad is stronger this season. We are playing rubbish. A combination of the players underperforming and a manager who has lost the plot. He always seems to lose it in his second year at every club. Hard to believe that we have gone to 5th to relegation candidates in a few months. That is some going, even by the Toon’s standards. Nobody thought it remotely possible. We all thought we might struggle a bit and come about 7th because of our small squad but this club can implode without warning. Worrying times. We are not much cop at relegation fights so we do not want to be near the bottom come March.

I really wonder what we train :S
We havent got any better at :
    Free kicks
    Goal kicks
    Defending set pieces

And worst of all most of the time when cisse is offside he tells them to pass earlier, which to me makes sense, he isnt quick so if they pass earlier he can already be sprinting and the defender will have to catch up. But the problem is that our players arent even on the same wave length and that cud be why our passing is all over the place :S

Jimley Jonas produce a dangerous cross errrrm did we sign a new player called jonas as the current player we have has a terrible delivery into the box. First of all. Haven’t read through the last post so don’t know if Beattie has gave a farewell speech yet…

Anyway. How on earth have we gone backwards?! We got rid of dead weight and replaces them with 4 quality young players. I agree, I would be a lot happier had we signed Debuchy Douglas Carroll etc, but we genuinely have been messed around this summer and it’s not all nufcs fault.

Debuchy – Lille has moved the goalposts like 3 times on the fee, they were bitter about cabaye on cheap.
Douglas – he’s stayin he’s going he staying hes going. Really messed us around.
De Jong – wanted to play in Germany in champions legue. Hehe.
Carroll – we offer same as west ham pretty much but rodgers is a pr1ck who wouldn’t sell him back to us.
Anyone else would have been viewed as second best or not value. And those sayin remy, he would have cost at least €20mil.

We could have done more to push these transfers through, but clearly those 4 players were were we saw value, and they all messed us around.

We have not gone backwards, the teams around us are not all real Madrid quality now, they have 2 or 3 signings and most have lost more than one key player.

Chelsea – shoul win the title or should be judged as failures with the money they spent.
Arsenal – lost top goal scorer, lost best midfielder with most assists. Will take them months to get going. Could t score past stoke!?
Spuds – lost two key players brought in 2 or 3 players. All in all about same level as befor and let’s not forget we beat them.
Liverpool – don’t be silly we will finish above them as they continue there steady decline into mediocrity.
Everton – look good, could threaten, similar team to us but think we have much more quality than them.
Fulham – haway man be serious. Mid table at best.
Swansea – they win two games and all of a sudden they are gonna get champions leage. They will do well, reckon 8th. Ahead of Liverpool.

    Anyone else? No.

Yes this window wasn’t great, but we kept all our key players, and bought 4 in. We have european games for the first time in 6 years, we are financially stable, have a good manager, have unbelievable talent in the squad.
Don’t understand the negativity but people will always be like this so I say let them get on with it. Life’s too short to surround yourself with doom and gloom.

And that ends my essay for today.

    Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Sep 1, 2012 at 1:35 AM

Have things calmed down a little? Right, so we haven’t signed anyone but we have kept the team together which is a great sign.

The same lads that got us 5th last year are being backed up by an emerging young set up and little Anita who could be a cracking little player.

Anyone who protests against an owner that has backed the club by holding onto our top men is a disgrace.

We have a long adventurous season lying in wait for us and all you guys can think about is how we haven’t replaced Simmo at RB or got a decent CB in, when none of you have the gumption to look at the fact that we already have a very tight squad, Tav is breaking through at tremendous rate, still raw but bags of potential and Curtis Good is highly rated at the club and will most likely play some part in the season in the first team.

As for this back-up striker situation it must be abundantly clear that we will now be playing a 4-5-1/4-3-3/4-2-3-1 formation with the strikers at the club so every cloud has a silver lining eh?

Chelsea as you rightly point out are successful, and there fore by your ‘wisdom’ should be stable!

Would you honestly, being obviously a reasonable person, say that Chelsea are stable?

Yes lack of transfers didnt help but debuchy wud of changed little (imo) douglas wud of been good. But he wasnt really going to help with 10injuries. 2of which being to vital players.and i dont think 2 defensive players wud of helped our lack of creativity upfront.

I think we can all agree that there are plenty factors to the issues we’re currently having.

    – Lack of investements
    – Suspensions
    – Injuries
    – Inexperience in Europe in our coaching team
    – Inexperience on the pitch
    – Fatigue for some
    – General player form

Does anyone think we should swap Jonas and Santon. The only thing people can say about Jonas is he gives defensive cover. With the absence of Cabaye and HBA we need some sort of attacking ability. Marv can provide it, but Santon’s direct running can cause problems.

  • 74 Les Grossman // Nov 27, 2012 at 4:51 PM

We have been nothing short of woeful for most of the season, mainly down to our defence starting to ship goals, do you not agree.

We only lost Cabaye and HBA in the last couple of weeks so I dont see your point.

Wiiliamson and Taylor dont seem to play well together yet collo plays well with both, no collo for a big slice of the season has affectec us really badly IMO.

Cabaye has been very hit and miss, as contrary to belief ,has HBA.

problem being is we have 300 midfielders now at the club with none of them able to fill their 2 boots.

So maybe get rid of Obertan, Marveaux and Anita one or two others and bring in a couple more midfielders. For me, we need a striker, CB,RB, Creative CM. then I will be happy.

  • 87 GeordieTwo // Nov 27, 2012 at 5:17 PM

Spot on Munster Mag @85. I think you and I have been watching the same side which has been falling to pieces this season. No team play to speak of, the real Cisse has disappeared, Willo and Simpson not good enough, now Saylor is out for a couple of months, no defensive depth and a few lucky points or we would be even closer to the bottom 3 than we already are. What a disaster. What a useless managing director who did virtually nothing that Pardew asked for last summer to strengthen us for the added games. Sack Llambias now Ashley. Of course that would mean growing a set first.

  • 95 mumbaNi // Nov 27, 2012 at 5:29 PM

@ 66 good comment. I said on Sunday that we should have pushed Santon to left mf and had ferguson at lb at least to have more attacking intent and maybe even a cross or 2 – so of course at h/t ferguson was taken off. I feel sorry for jonas as he clearly has no idea what his role in the team is anymore – he shouldn’t play a central role and he is focusing on covering the df too much – i don’t even think it enters his head to attack and try to get to the by-line anymore – Pardew is ruining any attacking thoughts he had.
For me at this time i think we should throw caution to the wind and try and attack a few teams – we are too nervous and trying too hard to defend and its causing us even more pressure – I’d like to see us defend a bit higher like we did last season and just try to run at teams. I don’t want to get beaten in any game – but limping through games looking clueless is painful for everyone. A bit of fight and heart can maybe get fans behind the team a little more – just my thoughts on the matter.

  • 98 GeordieTwo // Nov 27, 2012 at 5:36 PM

Good comments mumbaNi @95. But I think Pardew might be too conservative for that especially against Stoke away. They have that big defence to soak up pressure and then hit us on the counter. Our long ball game to the front players won’t work against Stoke so I hope Pards finally has an alternate plan.

  • 99 G // Nov 27, 2012 at 5:37 PM

@ Post 96 – I read that in the Sun, it said that Ashley Young and Nani are on their way out and he wanted somebody ‘dependable’ to replace one or both of them! Thats a bit like signing Kieron Dyer to improve the teams fitness record isn’t it?

  • 100 Newcastle for alltid // Nov 27, 2012 at 5:48 PM

Anita has been one of few bright sparks lately. I knew he was going to be a good player when adapting to the premiership. The only dilemma he’s got at the moment is that if he contributes too much offensively, we will suffer on the counter attacks from the opposition. That is the problem with having a two-man-midfield. If we get rid of our rubbish 4-4-2 system, we can have one CM free to attack and two holding to stop counter attacks – which will really balance us. We will NOT suffer offensively either, since we’ll have both wingers, a striker and the mentioned CM running into the “hole” behind the striker. The room behind the striker is so important in the modern game for two reasons:
    1. It gives the team a new area to explore and create chances from.
    2. It gives the opposition troubles and will lead to them having to hold back a midfielder to defend that area.

The other solution to take advantage of this space is that one of the strikers drop down. We can’t do that, since neither Cissè or ba has got the ball control and vision to do that. The worst strikers I played against as a footballer was the ones that would drop down and offer key passes to the oppositions play.

So for us, right now, a better idea would be playing with an attacking CM. In this role I could see Marveaux, Ben Arfa, or even Anita with Tiotè and Bigirimana holding.

Tiotè is a good player, no doubt. But he seems to struggle at the moment in a midfield pair. He is a strong tackler, good ball control. But his positioning is just not good enough for him to do all the defensive work himself if Anita was to contribute in attack.

  • 101 89Norcal // Nov 27, 2012 at 5:51 PM

Can’t believe Cabaye and Saylor are out till Feb…

Anita will be hugely important to us, but I hope he gets more involved with the forward play because we are lacking with ability in the midfield now. We can’t just toss youngsters like Sammeobi and Amalfitano in and expect to win.

Was hoping we could make a nice Europe run our first year back, but Pardew will have to start concentrating on the EPL

  • 102 Munster Mag // Nov 27, 2012 at 6:05 PM

Iziza, sorry, am at work so didnt see that. Either way most of the rehashed points that I read smack of over optimism which is always as useless as outright pessimism. If you read Toonbanno, its hard to argue with some of his posts on his blog re Pardews failings. I’m sure plenty of guys on here thought it was a sign of visionary management that Ashley gave Pardew ( there persists a rumour re friendship – who else was interviewed ? What process of selection was used??? ) an 8 yr contract . To me it was always daft – although I’d say he got him on the cheap ! The chickens are home to roost, and i feel very vindicated about the fair concerns ( or negativity to goons like Beefie ) I expressed from mid summer onwards. Lets hope we can get out of this, but some eejit said earlier that we can still aim for top 6? Strange logic there!

  • 111 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Nov 27, 2012 at 6:21 PM

Munster….I think that’s exactly his point. Trying to highlight how wrong us optimists all were / are 🙂

Toonbano does raise some good points, but clearly has his own views on the basic problem, which is where I don’t agree with him, but saying that, haven’t read much of his stuff.

Obviously I have no idea how or why Pardew got hired in to the job, it would be speculation, much like the gambling debt or friends scenarios. I would imagine he wasn’t asking for too much, wouldn’t challenge Ashley too much, but at the same time do a decent enough job as far as the football side goes.

8 year contract was and is excessive. Why not 5 years? It’s a 5 year plan after all 🙂 I maintain it was for some form of stability, although that is being tested at the moment. I am of the thinking that his contract will have get out clauses, Ashley is not a fool when it comes to costing him money, if he wants him gone, then he will fire him. Once again though, speculation 🙂

As for what we can achieve this season, saying 6th is still the aim would be premature. However, it is still as possible as us getting relegated…in theory. I’m not setting any targets really, i’d like to get out of the groups and see who we get in the EL, as for the PL, mid-table minimum. Not sure how I feel about January tbh, it’s certainly a chance for Ashley to show everyone what he’s about….i’m sure no one is holding their breath, but he has surprised us at this time of year before….both in a good and bad way (Cisse / Carroll).

    Watch this space.

Robinio….I’ve tried, but as soon as I cut my strings I collapse in a heap on the floor.

Minimal investment – Very true, the man loves a bargain. However, spending minimal money does not mean you can’t get decent players in, does it?

Lining his own pockets – Please show me where he has lined his pockets? I assume the SD adverts have been free, which has helped his company and therefore his profits, but we also have an interest free loan, do the two match each other? Probably, more or less.

F**k off the fans – He certainly has, some ill advised and shocking moves. But do I think he sits there and thinks of new ways to get at us? Hardly. He has also done some good things, whether that outweighs the bad is a matter of opinion.

Taken us down – Yep, he did. He also got us straight back up. He made his mistakes at first, that is for sure, but that relegation wasn’t all about Ashley. Managers and players definitely had their hands in that one.

January – We will see. I’m not saying he will, what I said is it’s another chance to show what he’s about. I didn’t expect Cisse. Heck, I didn’t expect Cabaye, Santon, Benny and the likes.

Don’t confuse careful and planned spending with no investment. It’s a serious grey area on here.

Oh well this season is gonna be long……cannot see AP lasting the distance if he continues with 4-4-2. Gotta play what players we have in their best positions and not bow to power politics in the dressing room. Much more of this….and I think AP will loose ’em. He needs to show leadership and buoy the players…..that’s his job. AP did wonders last season but you’re only as good as your last game…..well at the moment that does not bode well. Solano- Most of us bloggers are self indulgent. Why else would we bother to post knowing that there is little chance of reaching agreement. As with most of your posts you package history into a right riveting read! Your ability to crystalise the issues would be a lesson to Catchy or whatever name he’s going under today. He goes for quantity whereas you go for quality. I’ve finished creeping. Turning to the moral of the story. On Ashley and player expenditure designed to move us onwards and upwards. You go for the leopard never changes his spots . Whereas I believe MA has well and truly learnt from past mistakes and therefore will go for the once bitten twice shy approach. Pardew deserves better than the disparaging patsy comment. Is it being a patsy to not deflect the blame for the lack of investment in the summer. It’s hard for me to believe that Pardew didn’t make his feelings known to his bosses that the squad would be over stretched this season. The way many are reacting on here MA and DL are getting off lightly and Pardew is being largely unfairly criticised. Whereas as Transfer Sage and Tads have consistently said the players have much to answer for. For me motivation always comes from within. The crux of the matter though is that Ashley needs to protect his investment. Relegation and resultant loss of massively increased tv revenue next season will be in the forefront of his thinking. As always time will tell. You remain my comic book hero.
    Synergistically yours .

Jonno – if you have an opinion why not express it

  • 128 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Nov 27, 2012 at 7:13 PM

    Robinio….according to

    Season 10-11 – Transfer profit of £24.75m
    Season 11-12 – Transfer loss of £11.6m
    Season 12-13 – Transfer loss of £3.1m

Roughly £10m profit then. So where has the £10m gone? Now, “some” (not a lot I imagine) would have gone on agents fees and signing on fees. Don’t know how much, so can’t quantify.

This season isn’t over, so depending how January goes we may have to review those calculations.

Perhaps more to the point is, have we improved the players since Carrolls departure. I’d say so, but we’re still to know for sure.

Can I ask what your credentials are before I trust you over my own judgement?

Last year every player in the squad wanted to play, they all gave 120%, if it was hard a result was ground out and we had a never say die attitude.

This year we have a bunch of players who cannot string two passes together, cannot retain possesion and several agents who are rubbing their hads together waiting for the transfer wndow to open.

Anita is no where near the player Guthrie was and is a 3M player who loks to be a decent prospect at best.

All of the good work done last year has been undone and the dressing room spirit is in tatters.

Something is fundamentally wrong and my guess is that several agents and a bit of player power are wreaking havoc in the dressing room.

If we end up in the top 10 I’ll be very surprised and that is from somebody who has rarely if ever posted a negative comment

Because unless it’s exactly in line with the delusionals, it’s not a real opinion and I’m not as good a fan as someone in Ibiza who never goes to the matches.

Yes Ibiza toon you are the commanding officer of the blog police.

    Well done.

  • 133 Robinio // Nov 27, 2012 at 7:18 PM

IT – I am sure after last season MA thought there was enough in the squad to at least secure mid table without any investment from him , he has clearly no interest whatsoever in taking the club forward of the players AP desperately wanted/needed would have been bought in the summer . I predict a few loanees in January just to try and preserve our PL status , but given the complete freefall we are in I doubt it will be enough . Lets face it on an analysis of this season so far we don’t deserve to be where we are , our performances warrant bottom 3

  • 134 89Norcal // Nov 27, 2012 at 7:19 PM

    Premiership Manager,

You really think Guthrie is better than Anita? I hardly remember Guthrie playing outside a cup game last season.

  • 135 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Nov 27, 2012 at 7:22 PM

Jono….Interesting response. Please show me where I have ever said the following:

    1) That I’m a better fan than you.
    2) That if you don’t agree with me, yours is not a real opinion.

    Perhaps we should start again?

Hi Jono, how are you today?

  • 136 Robinio // Nov 27, 2012 at 7:23 PM

no doubt at all that Guthrie is better than Anitra , provided he played in his proper position ie centre mid and not left wing

  • 137 jonobbad // Nov 27, 2012 at 7:23 PM

Wow wind the ego in ibizatoon.
How many guys are there in Ibiza who don’t go to matches.
    It’s ok I don’t need exact figures

  • 138 jonobbad // Nov 27, 2012 at 7:25 PM

    I actually agree with you.
I can only comment on what I’ve seen of both and I have seen more of Guthrie to be fair.
But if both were here right now, I know who I’d be playing against stoke.
    And it ain’t Anita

  • 139 jimmysmith // Nov 27, 2012 at 7:25 PM

This is rotten run is likely cathartic, a little dose of reality for DL and Ash and also an opportunity for those in and around the first team and the manager to show their character and prove their worth.

It was always on the cards, so here we have it.

  • 140 Conaldo (The Wizard...Also Bestest Friends With Paul Scharner) // Nov 27, 2012 at 7:26 PM

I know there’s all this talk about Ba, and if true that he won’t play on the left,

But I’m sure I read something a couple months ago saying he would play on the left for the benefit of the team.

In any case, we need him to knock a couple in on Wednesday, but I feel that even a draw will be a good result for us.
We need to stop the rot and build sometime soon, although a cold dark wet Wednesday night in stoke isn’t exactly the easiest game…

  • 141 89Norcal // Nov 27, 2012 at 7:26 PM

I’m not sure I agree with the notion Guthrie was better than Anita. They are somewhat different role players anyway, but Anita’s offensive role will be increased now that Cabaye is gone, and also because he is small for an EPL defensive midfielder.

I think everyone is judging Anita on those 1 or 2 games where he had a couple errant passes. Hardly enough to make a case against him.

  • 142 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Nov 27, 2012 at 7:27 PM

Jacket….Firstly, thank you. I will treat this honour with great respect. I’ll try not to let you down.

    More to the point, why?

Robinio….I do understand where fans have a problem with Ashley, I really do. Personally, I do believe he was trying to sign players in the summer. Notably Debuchy and Douglas. I don’t think it was a PR stunt, so refuse to buy in to the idea that they don’t want to get players in. For me, I think its an issue of time, they don’t deem it as urgent for new recruits as the fans. Let’s see if that changes. As for loans, why do you think that? Except for Benny (with an option to BUY) who else have we loaned in? Are you clutching at straws to try and prove a point? I don’t think you’re proving anything other than clear hatred…which rightly or wrongly does cloud ones judgement. Same could be said about any optimists, but it doesn’t change my point. I may be wrong, but so may you, so why do I need to get real?

  • 143 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Nov 27, 2012 at 7:31 PM

This rotten turn of events is likely cathartic. A dose of reality for Ash and DL and an opportunity for the manager and players to show their worth or otherwise.

It was always on the cards and now we have it and it will hopefully bring positive change with it.

Munster Mag – if you ever doubted that our brains are more attuned to negative news just read this blog. I am a sucker for Irish girls give me some respite. I plead guilty for saying what you said you thought I had said. And. I stand by what I said. He hasn’t said anything I had not already factored into my thinking. I see your not in the Pardew out camp at this time. Look, it takes an act of faith in players spirit to believe we’re going to start winning games. I am looking for the restoration of battered pride and more desire and determination. Much of what Redknapp has been saying publicly I am sure Pardew has been saying privately to the team. Let’s see how they respond. Despite all the verbiage bloggers don’t have the answers. If only it was that easy
to make a few changes and adopt a new formation. When players start taking responsibility things will pick up. Coloccini’s return will be a big plus to have a natural leader again.. In difficult times you see the leaders and the followers. I am not a shrinking violet and you might have noticed have strong convictions but nevertheless I appreciate your comments.

Realistically we do have a better squad than last season we replaced a few fringe players with other fringe players but younger who look good prospects
I feel it’s miles to early to be writting off anita and with the way our CM’s have been playing it would be hard for anyone to settle in
I agree we miss guthrie he was a hood squad player but he wanted garunteed first team football and the lad has already lost his way at reading so perhaps our coaching squad and board knew what they were doing letting his contract run
Mate guthrie played lw what maybe once for half hour? He played constantly in CM especially when tiote was at the ACON

  • 151 breno95 // Nov 27, 2012 at 7:43 PM

Briliant the stuff put on here. Some are better fans than others because some go to games which makes them better apparently. Some are delusional, some know nothing about football, some do because they have played a bit in the past, some are well in with the ‘city’ and know exactly the thoughts of MA even though, as far as I know, MA has never spoke to the media at all re his purchase/running of the club and ambition or lack of. Some are obsessed with naming the side and formations.
I have chipped in with the odd, infrequent post which I raise issues or pose potential ideas but overall it amazes me that the mindset of posters is they truly believe they can actually impact on the current predicament faced. Priceless!
Keep it up lads but to the many ardent MA haters out there constantly bitching and posting that they are well in the loop of the executive end of running the club, my suggestion is either scrape out from the back of your sofas the £300-400 million to buy it and then you can own it, run it and spend vast sums of your money on marquee, over priced, over rated, mercenary players and win the EPL, FA cup, League Cup, Europa Cup and then the holy Grail of the CL.
Overall you are all deluded and constantly strive to gain one upmanship against your fellow posters in your own belief that you really can/will make a difference.
As I said – it’s priceless and sheer entertainment!!

  • 152 jonobbad // Nov 27, 2012 at 7:43 PM

Breno…Where did that come from? Do you have the right blog?

Jono….Well, what a waste of both our time that was.

I don’t mean to imply my opinions are better than anyone else, but I suppose anyone who believes in what they write (the majority) must think they’re right to an extent and therefore that could be perceived as thinking theirs is better, but surely that applies to most people, not just me? You clearly think you’re opinion has superiority over mine, so what’s the difference?

Of late, all I have been trying to say is, we’ve thrown around ideas, criticisms and such, but what is the point? Where is it getting us? What should we be doing? Let’s unite and get behind the team. Not that anyones opinion is wrong, but that i have a different one, so lets move on and see what happens rather than bicker like children. Terrible stuff I’m sure.

As for blog police, you can think what you want, I have no desire to control this thing, i will say what I think though, as do most. When you say “a few people”, do you mean Straight Jacket as I don’t think i’ve been called it for a while tbh? However, prove me wrong, show me where I have policed the blog or acted above myself and I will apologise to those effected.

Can you not see it from my point of view or is at simple as i’m optimistic and I bully people with my opinions? If that’s the case, we’re probably best not to interact as it’s not beneficial to either of us really.

I have tried to raise a topic to discuss re Bent’s current villa situation. The lad is a goal scorer with a very good record. I feel he could bring alot to our team and he has obviously fallen out with Lambert. Could he come is my question.

You got a prediction on tomos nights score?

I think the thing that put me off bent apart from his price tag which was ridiculously high was last season a story was in the press (granted not gospel) that he’d requested to not play to much after coming back from injury as he didnt want to pick up a knock before the euro’s (which he didnt go to) this being whilst villa were in a huge relegation battle and he was there marquee signing and captain! Granted mcliesh shoulda put him straight but he seemed scared of his own shadow!

You highlight the problem we have. We only have 2 strikers – apologies to the fans of Shola especially the real Ruddy if he is still reading but not posting.
Could be that Bent would gel better with Cisse? I agree the defence and another creative, but hard working midfielder is more priority but we all thought that last January but MA pulled Cisse out the bag so who knows.

  • 185 Super Magpie // Nov 27, 2012 at 8:14 PM

I for one can’t understand why people are blaming Ba for Pardew not playing 4-3-3. Ba has every right to complain about not being played in his favoured position. We may not want him to throw a fit over it but its the way it is. Whether he would do it for the team atm will show his true colours. He’s our top scorer so we can’t really say its his fault because it’s his goals that have been keeping us afloat this season.

Also, There is not just one person to blame regarding our abysmal run of form, which many are doing but alot also see the same as what I’m about to say.

    First of all,
Ashley and Llambias’ failure to bring players during the summer is the stand out reason for me because it had lead to the events that have occurred after. There is no chance that we will go down however, they will not allow that to happen again. But they set the tone for the season by failing in what was a vital task.

Yes, Pardew also has to take some of the blame. The same predictable 4-4-2 is not working and will continue to falter. His stubbornness is costing us dearly. Ok, we have had injuries and suspensions ( another topic, why are we so Ill disciplined compared to last season too? ) and because of that I can sympathise with him, it’s a hard job for any manager. What is annoying me about him is the way he contradicts himself and try’s to manipulate the fans by doing this. It works for him though and it takes the pressure off himself. But, he is running out of excuses and the pressure is mounting. He’s got a hard task to turn it around; whether he can do it or not I don’t know. We’ll have to see how everything plays out in the upcoming weeks.

    Final point,
The players. They do not get away from all this. They must take some responsibility for our dreadful run of form. Ed posted an article earlier with Jonas talking about Stoke playing long balls and that they will be a threat from set pieces. What he forgets is that we play more long balls and are worse at it than them. Kind of ironic…
The whole team are low on confidence and its hard to see where our win will come from. You could SUGGEST that Pardew has lost the dressing room. But in order for things to improve they need to accept that they are not playing well and it’s not just Pardew’s fault.

    In order to improve:

    1) Pardew needs to stop feeling sorry for himself and get this team firing again, it’s a hard task but it can be done.

    2) The players need to also man up and believe in themselves, the spirit that we had last season seems non-existant. Times like this is when they are being tested to the max and they need to show that they can comeback from it.

    3) I’ve said this many times before and I’ll say it again. When January rolls around recruitments will be needed. Atleast 3 IMO, 2 defenders ideally. This is where Ashley and Llambias show whether they want us to compete for 8th and above. A statement of intent is needed.

  • 190 jimmysmith // Nov 27, 2012 at 8:17 PM

These flat performances at home are puzzling. You’d think performing in front of 50 000 passionate Geordies who’ve shelled out far too big a chunk of their hard earned in part at least to pay players relatively massive wages would light a fire under anyone.

Or is it the pressure of the occasion and the anxiety and expectation of the crowd burdening the players. Remember Villa earlier this season, they really had the bit between their teeth. Why can’t we generate a bit of that?

How much would villa want? You probably right in that it would be a big fee and some will shout he is too old and does not fit the clubs transfer profile. On that one, I believe that to improve the younger players and the first team older, experienced players are beneficial. That’s why I was interested in the reports linking Toulalan to us but alas.

As for the problems do some not think that a few of our top men had their heads turned in the summer. Admissions were given that bids / interests were expressed. I think it’s possible sales were not concluded due to assurances that they had signings lined up which then failed to happen and some have gone off in a huff.
    Again just one to debate.

  • 197 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Nov 27, 2012 at 8:25 PM

Mister Tuff….Yes, 100% yes. Now punish me 🙂

Breno…Who knows indeed. I just don’t think Bent is the player we need right now, not with Ba and Cisse. We need someone who will offer something different and I don’t believe he is the player to give us that. A good goal scorer, don’t get me wrong, but we have that already and I don’t think it would fix too much. Having said all of that, who knows what will happen in January!

Super….Brilliant post. I think we can safely close up shop now 🙂

A few days ago i remeber ed posting an article about simmo been on 20k a week and he doesnt feel its enough etc. an everybody was making fun of him. But i was thinking and understand what he means.

He is on 20k a week so 80k a month (offically)
    50%= tax = 10k a week= 520k a year
Footballers retire early so lets say simmo retires at 32 and started on 20k a week at 20.
    So thats 12 years. 12X530= 6240k

So thats alot. But he has to survive on that till pension age which will be 70. So thats 50years he has to survive on that.
    50X52= 2600 weeks
    6240k/2600= 2400 a week

So really he is getting paid 2400a week, still alot.
but seen so he is officially on 20k a week and has 2 children 20% of his wages goes to his children (ln avg)
0,20X20= 4k so 4k a week goes to his children till they are 18.

So if u look at it like that, for 18years he is earning -1,6k
(if he doesnt get a job after football, like lots dont)

Yes i’m bored…… (if he now gets a raise to 30k he still only has to pay 20% of 20k because thats how much he was earning when he left them/his GF)

Just checking in and out here today but there seems to be a bit of an Ibiza witch-hunt on here tonight?

Just my opinion (so I am entitled right? :D) but I think Ibiza is one of this blogs very decent lads.

There’s a big difference in being the “blog police” as Ibiza is being charged with and trying to reign in some of the more knee-jerk comments of other people here by basically giving his opinion.

Some people love to flap at every possible opportunity and jump on every morning just to whinge and some just come here to enjoy the banter.

But everyone has there opinion and if there’s to be a witch-hunt about “blog police” then there’s some genuine crackers we regularly get on here who are much more guilty surely right? 🙂

  • 202 toonLYF // Nov 27, 2012 at 8:27 PM

i’d take Danny Rose as replacement for Simmo any day like. Santon RB, Rose LB. That lad can run like!

  • 203 Super Magpie // Nov 27, 2012 at 8:30 PM

    About Bent

Very similar to Cisse, won’t do much for the team unless you are creating chances. We are not at the moment so it would be a huge waste of money. We need a striker who will blitz defenders with pace, an area that we are lacking.

  • 204 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Nov 27, 2012 at 8:30 PM

Jono…Actually no. That was amusing. It was the “Such a long post and you avoided the question in your usual dress it all up with fancy cr@p.”. I found that bit rude.

Also, at the beginning of the conversation you spoke about me, then said wind me ego in when I responded, implying it wasn’t me you were talking about, only to then later say it was. Give me a break mate. I may be pompous and long winded at times (even all the time), but this is just stupid. I don’t think anyone else wants to read our back and forth act on here, so, what do you suggest we do?

  • 205 catchy in norway // Nov 27, 2012 at 8:32 PM

i hate this spell (2 years under pardew)

i hate that we are losing

i hate the idea of going down,,

what i would love is the fans to get together, and get him out of the club,,
not for my reasons,, but have a think about it,, dont sit on the fence

he got us 5th with poor football and liverpool and chelsea having a poor season, but if you take the table away from the picture, and just base what he has done to /for the team, not a sane man would keep him

his football, is hoofball, 2 years of stats prove that,
we create very few chances under him
the defence is shit when you consider we play 4 defenders and 3 dmc

he has a much better squad than half of the EPL, but as soon as we have an injury or 2 the whole world is to blame,

Newcastle United (4-4-2)(4-4-2): Tim Krul; Danny Simpson, Mike Williamson, Steven Taylor (c), Davide Santon; Hatem Ben Arfa, Cheick Tiote, Vurnon Anita, Shane Ferguson; Sammy Ameobi, Demba Ba
Substitutes: Rob Elliot, James Tavernier, Mehdi Abeid, Gael Bigirimana, Romain Amalfitano, Sylvain Marveaux, Shola Ameobi

that was the team to play swansea at home, are you telling me on paper that isnt good enough to beat swansea at home

on my way home i heard a sunderland fan on talk sport, talking about the lack of creativity in there team , he said it kills him to think we(nufc) have 2 players in midfiled that would walk into any team in the league and not look out of place, HBA cabaye

can you honestly say that pardew get the best out of them 2 , let alone cisse and ba

the fact is CISSE is a shit footballer, can not play for toffy if you as me, but as a finnisher, he is out of this world,
if you where his manager, you would be getting as many balls into the box as possible, to get the best out his ability,
BA is strong can hold the ball up, looks for flick ons

fro me pardew is a better looking smoother talking JFK

and i honestly think he has lost the players,, there is no way on this plannet they are that bad

its not the best SQUAD, but its better than he has ever had

Also child support is after tax so he wud only be paying 2k

    Still thats only £400 a week for 18years he is earning £1600 a month…

Catchy….I get where you are coming from and I believe I have said in the past that whilst we don’t agree, I acknowledge your opinion has been the same all the way through and that you clearly are passionate about both the club and your views. I have read and thought about what you say, the problem is, at this time I don’t agree with you on all levels. I’m not enjoying this season so much, but I did last year. I want to give Pardew more time, but accept that may be wrong, but at this point I don’t know that or believe it. I will of course admit to being wrong as and when, much like I will admit I thought we’d handle this season a lot better than we have despite the lack of incoming players. I knew it would take it’s toll, but not to this extent, but still, overall I am a happy fan and the major panic alarm isn’t going off yet. Nothing has changed since we last discussed it, i’m still giving it more time.

to avoid relegation we must get rid of pardew. if relegation is ok by some of you lot, then fine support pards untill your heart is content, but dont slag off people who want the best for the club and only want to see them do well. this will never happen under pards. watch QPR in future games , how a real manager will turn them around, the same as a proper manager who knows what he is doing could do the same to us given a chance.

  • 228 Mister Tuff // Nov 27, 2012 at 8:54 PM

Regardless of whether there is any “senior” cover I would not play Simpson. He is not going to sign a new contract so his future is not at Newcastle -why allow him to play -when game time can be given to someone else – who wants to play.
I think it was beefman who suggested earlier on to play Tavernier. I fully agree – whilst Tav is a bit raw and has made a couple of errors recently -he seems to me to have more to offer than Simpson. He appears to have the ability to beat a man and has an instinct to go forward -which is more than Simpson has to offer.
Additionally all the stuff in the papers about Simpsons sexploits, wanting to tie up young ladies and texting slappers for horny pics reveals where his mind is at the minute. Get rid of him asap.

Mr Tuff, no offence and I would love it if Tav had what it takes to be a great fb but where is the evidence he is better than Simmo. Tav has played 35 mins for us in the league this year and we conceded 2 goals at Reading in that time. The onlt other appearence I can remember was against Man U in the LC and he looked out of his depth,. With Simmos contract running sown I would have no objection to selling him in Jan especially if we get another fb but till then he is still the best bet at RB unless we swap Santon there but that leaves a gap at LB.

every game’s a must win, but i’d think twice before thinking it’s something that will come easy (not insinuating you were saying that). Martinez has them playing more and more like a group and year after year (at least for ourselves) are proving more and more dangerous.

If we want to get back to ‘winning’ ways, we need do something at stoke to stop the rot. can’t see us getting anything from anyone else this calendar year with our confidence as shot as it is and our manager as stubborn and clueless

    Another point
Martinez has done a great job at Wigan. He has them playing great football for the squad they have but how long has is took them to implement that. 3 years? And that isn’t the finished article yet.
If Martinez was to come here and tried to do the same as he did at Wigan he would be hounded out because he wouldn’t produce the results straight away. We’d see alot more mistakes being made than we are now and he wouldn’t last with our fans.

Got a question for u lot. Ever since the season started, it’s looked like we tire quicker towards the end of matches. Being low on energy and etc.
Now, in most cases i dont think you can use Europe as an excuse, due to the fact that we have been rotating so many players.

But do you think AP may be emphasising his gameplans too much, so that the cardio workout gets “forgotten”.

Don’t know if anyone has mentioned this as 200 odd comments is a lot to sift through but every club now knows we need defenders and therefore will hike their prices up accordingly. I can’t see Ashley paying over the odds regardless of whether it’s needed or not

I have a secondary reason for gracing you all with my presence tonight. A plea. I nearly put my laptop cable in my external hard drive tonight and stopped. However, the touching of the two was enough to make it go zzz and it smells a bit smokey. I think it’s fried but is there any way of retrieving the data by taking it out and putting it elsewhere.

  • 257 Mister Tuff // Nov 27, 2012 at 9:16 PM

tequila – whilst Tav has not had much game time and made a couple of errors, I would pose the question back to you -why do you think Simmo is better?
Against Soton I recall his “efforts” leading up to the second goal – he did not chase back and basically did not bother to go with the runner – clearly abrogating his responsibilities -and the newly publicised “Arry Doctrine”.
Might be a bit of a gamble but I would try it -probably Pardew won’t.

  • 258 mattyNUFC // Nov 27, 2012 at 9:17 PM

    and to elaborate, super magpie

there is more than a stark contrast to RM and AP. I feel like it’s redundant to point it out but you feel differently

Martinez has always had the same philosophy. He earned his stripes at Swansea. Pardew got sacked (rightly or otherwise) from a L1 side. I’m not sure even the most ardent of pro-pardew supporters could say AP is the superior manager

as a person, there aren’t many who come around who are better than him. we were lucky in the sense that we’ve been graced with such gentleman as Sir Bobby and Chris.

as a manager, RM proved last year he’s tactically superior. sure, it’s only one game, but it was a game that had we won, we would have stood a very good chance of being in the CL.

I mean, i could go on, but I’m not as i’m gonna hunker down with the girl and watch some walking dead re-runs, but c’mon, man. maybe i misinterpreted what you were saying, but AP will never be in the same league as Martinez past the division their teams are playing in. RM will go on to a top, top team one day while AP will be lucky to find a PL job after us

Look at the intensity of Southampton and other teams we’ve played, so much energy, we struggle to contain them, when on paper we should.
It’s quite common, when it comes to players with less ability, you train them physically to outlast the opposition.

  • 263 hotdog // Nov 27, 2012 at 9:23 PM

  • 265 tequilamag // Nov 27, 2012 at 9:24 PM

Mr Tuff, the reasons I think Simmo is the better option are, he has experience and we are in a bit of a dogfight right now,imo it`s better to introduce young players to a team playing well. Some players especially young ones can let the tension get to them and go into their shells when things are going badly. Fergie looked great coming on against tiring defences earlier in the season when things looked a lot brighter than they do now, but has looked poor in a poorly performing team.
I also think Simmo is not given enough credit for the things he does well. He is not the best by a long stretch but he clearly has something to offer judging by the amount of games he played for us. And at the risk of boring everyone with we finished 5th last year, he was part of that defence which kept 15 clean sheets. Not bad by anyones standards.

  • 266 mattyNUFC // Nov 27, 2012 at 9:25 PM

if he can put us in the top 10 before january, i’ll give credit. if after signings in january we finish in the top 8, i’ll give credit

    until then….

I’m not comparing Pardew’s football to Martinez’s. There is no comparison. Wigan play better football but have a much weaker squad.
Pardew did not deserve to be sacked by Southampton either, ask their fans. I do believe Martinez will go to a bigger club once he is finished with Wigan. He turned down the Bindippers to stay there so I don’t get why people on here would think he’d come to us. I couldn’t call on where Pardew will go after he leaves us because it will depend in which manner he leaves.

  • 270 hotdog // Nov 27, 2012 at 9:28 PM

Dannyo – you maybe right but my view is at this level all players should be super fit. I don’t see these lesser players in do called smaller clubs. I’ve been really impressed with the football other teams are currently bashing us with.

  • 271 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Nov 27, 2012 at 9:28 PM

    Jesper…. I do what I can 🙂

Stuart….That’s fair enough, figured you know that, but sometimes it does seem to get a bit lost in posts. I don’t actually know how to answer that question, not because I don’t want to, but it will happen when it happens. I’d like to think I’m not so naive that it would be too late to do anything, but that may well be the case. It also may prove right that this season is a bit cr*p, but we don’t go down and things get sorted. We get in the few players we still need over the next couple of windows, Pardew can relax and implement his ideas (it is my opinion that he is restricted by some of the players he still is stuck with so to speak) and that next season and beyond get better and better. That’s me anyway, can’t answer for the rest of the lunatics that support Newcastle.

Anyway people, I am off, not that I’m wishing this day away or anything.

    Take it easy.

Martinez says he turned down Liverpool but Liverpool denied offering him a deal as they preferred Rodgers.

Not saying we definitely could get him, or that we should even try, but I don’t think it’s definitely ruled out

  • 274 hotdog // Nov 27, 2012 at 9:33 PM

Matty- he deserves your backing now for his efforts last year. Your a supporter so support. He knows if things don’t pick up he could be on his way but Jesus he has given us European football in his first year in charge.

  • 275 Transfer Sage // Nov 27, 2012 at 9:35 PM

Fitness should not be an issue but I think it is. I think the premier league is one if the weakest in top European league for fitness.

I would argue arsenal play somebody the quickest football in the league therefore must be one if the fittest sides.

When fabregas joined Barcelona pep guardiola said he was shocked how poor his fitness was and he took a few months to catch up to the barca players.

They may be skilful but they work so hard of the ball and move so much with it.

Our team hasn’t for the technique but no reason they shouldn’t have the same fitness levels. Our players never seem to rush to close down but seem to also be tired almost from the get go.

  • 276 Super Magpie // Nov 27, 2012 at 9:35 PM

I would not rule it out in the future. But I’m talking about the posters who want Pardew sacked and Martinez in. It’s not going to happen.

  • 277 Dannyo // Nov 27, 2012 at 9:36 PM

Not only are we playing badly, but there’s just so, so few players with fire in their belly.
Santon by far the best player yet, HBA tries, but gets closed down by 3 players. Big ask of him.
I just want players to work, they just dont anymore. Ba been good too, but Cisse stays up top and waits in offside position.
He worked so hard when he came last season.
    Playing LB at times even.

  • 278 Transfer Sage // Nov 27, 2012 at 9:38 PM

    Marty and hotdog

Mike Ashley is not the type to listen to the fans. He doesn’t care what we think as long as the club operates under his plan.

I, like others, may complain here and want more from our players and manager but at the games I will cheer them on.

I never like to boo during a game, occasionally after a match but only if its clear the players haven’t put in effort. If they lose they lose, but I won’t accept players only putting in 50% effort

  • 279 hotdog // Nov 27, 2012 at 9:39 PM

Mackems drew 0-0 against QPR. MON Out? 😆

Villa leading too. A loss tomorrow could see us just 1 point above the drop zone. Southampton have Norwich at home so that is a very winnable game for them.

  • 282 Transfer Sage // Nov 27, 2012 at 9:42 PM

I think Martinez could be attracted, but he won’t leave Wigan mid season for anyone I don’t think. He respects them too much to leave then in danger.

Also unless we are relegated I don’t think pardew is under threat. It’s clear the goal is not top 4. Not because we only spent 6 mil but because we only signed one first team player, possibly 2 if bigi counts.

I don’t think Ashley expects too much, if he had spent 20 mil on 3/4 players pardew may be under threat but I don’t see him under pressure at all.

We all know pardew has a good year then a bad year at all clubs he has been to. We don’t get to see if be turns it around or it continues to drop in standard. We may well find out next year as he is going no where

  • 285 Transfer Sage // Nov 27, 2012 at 9:48 PM

The players need a boost. A new signing. A big performance from somebody. A good bollocking from captain or manager.

They are stuck in a downward spiral for me.

Lack of good passing means less runs are made, which means less options for the pass so fewer passes made, then even leas runs made and so on.

I think this is just demoralising the players and there isn’t a character in the team who will shout and ball and make them pull through. We lack a captain, a real leader (Kevin Nolan was the last). Colo is a good player but not a captain for me.

It was ok last year as things went our way, we rarely went a few games without a win or at least a good point.

Now things are tough too many have gone into their shells and hidden.

I think we do better in Europe as there is less pressure with a smaller crowd and less demands as they are mainly fringe players used.

  • 286 Super Magpie // Nov 27, 2012 at 9:50 PM

Good points. Doesn’t sound too good for us though. If no funds are given to buy players we will plummet down the table even more than we are now. This is why January is vital. It could be the difference between us finishing top 10 or being in a relegation scrap. I will lose all faith in Ashley if we fail to bring in the required players. I can’t lose any faith with Llambias because I had none anyway.

  • 287 Tsunki // Nov 27, 2012 at 9:52 PM

At least we aren’t in the red and white striped part of the north east ha ha.

at the risk of being singled out as a pardewite or ashley apologist, I have to just cite that alarmist cries about us being a few points off the relegation places are laughable, when the points difference between the relegation area and top dog is 10.

  • 288 Tsunki // Nov 27, 2012 at 9:54 PM

….almost as laughable as me saying top dog when clearly i meant top 6 ha ha ok I’ll get me coat……

  • 289 Transfer Sage // Nov 27, 2012 at 9:54 PM

Ashley clearly knows nothing about football. Which is why he should have appointed a Chairman who does, not a guy who has no football knowledge.

He wouldn’t hire a managing director for sports direct who knew nothing about retail.

Llambias is Ashley’s mistake. He needs to get rid and correct him. Not signing players doesn’t show we are tough negotiators, it shows we can’t negotiate.

Sometimes you pay a little more than you want to get what you need. We didbt need a striker, so fair enough not paying too much for de Jong or Carroll. We did need a defender so we should have paid that little more for debuchy and Douglas and if not them, then others should have been identified.

Pardew is having a bad year but he hasn’t been helped by the owner or players either

  • 291 Super Magpie // Nov 27, 2012 at 9:56 PM

I said that after I Swansea defeat. We lack a leader like Nolan to galvanise the team when we go into a slump. Selling Nolan was a mistake IMO. We shouldn’t have give him that 5 year contract he wanted but we should have let him run down his contract which had 2 years left? So it would’ve ran out at the end of the season.

One on the other hand, would we have signed Cabaye? I suppose Cabaye had already signed before Nolan left.

  • 292 Catchy In Straight Jacket // Nov 27, 2012 at 9:58 PM

  • 293 Transfer Sage // Nov 27, 2012 at 10:00 PM

    We also lack experience

Man utd have giggs, Scholes, Ferdinand in the squad

    City have lescott, Barry

    Spurs have Parker, gallas, Friedal

    Chelsea have cole, lampard, terry

    Arsenal even have arteta

I could list all team but takes too long. We lack players who have many years prem league experience. Colo and Jonas are our oldest and they only have 2/3 years in prem league

We lack that Nolan, Barton figure who has been there in good and bad times and knows what is required. The closest thing we have is shola but he’s the only one really.

  • 294 Tsunki // Nov 27, 2012 at 10:01 PM

Transfer – maybe Llambias is guilty more of a little bit of naivete in the football transfer market, not necessarily as a negotiator per se? It would be hoped that each time he learned the cost of his brinkmanship, as we are experiencing it to some degree now I suppose. I agree that if you are playing hardball, you need more targets and you need to know when to move on quickly and not dwell on slow negotiations.

  • 295 Super Magpie // Nov 27, 2012 at 10:01 PM

Had we started in the form we are in now and started to turn it around we would be looking up into the the top 8/6 area. As it stands though we are going downwards. Even if we are in the 14th round of matches, possibly being 1 point above the drop is not good reading.

Read my post at 185. It gives my opinions on things. Might be a bit of a slog such is the length of it.

  • 297 Transfer Sage // Nov 27, 2012 at 10:04 PM

Llambias thinks he is a god for the Carroll deal. He sold him to people desperate to make an impression who were even more clueless than him.

We need a bigger scouting network, have 3/4 for each position that the manager is happy with. As soon as a team messes us about we go off to the next target. Lille knew debuchy was the only full back we were after and as such held out, rightly so from their point of view, why should they sell him cheap.

I know I wouldn’t be happy if we sold somebody cheap to a team. Especially if it was to a team who had just taken Ba on a cut price deal cause if his release clause.

  • 298 Super Magpie // Nov 27, 2012 at 10:07 PM

I think we have plenty of experience actually: Shola, Colo, Jonas, Harper, even Saylor. Its just none of them are leaders of men. I would stay with the point that we lack a Nolan type player.

  • 299 Tsunki // Nov 27, 2012 at 10:13 PM

Super Mag – yes I did and dont be hard on yourself its a good read lol.

I agree with your points although I think there is a blur between the formation/injury/curious lack of ground skills, which combine to form a demoralising spirit.

1/ This is the time for Pardew to show motivational skills and tactically show he can get a second-choice team to lock down while injuries subside.

2/ The drafted players need to get up to speed and/or just dig in and do a shut up shop job, the senior players need to put a stop to the rot, there is where the good money is going.

3/ My point above about lessons learned in the perilous world of footy business. I would hope the guys at the tops’ ears are burning and they are feeling the sting of their gamble on the young lads this summer. With perspective it would be a shock not to see some serious transfer activity this january and lets see how well they do with keeping our ‘stars’…..

  • 301 Transfer Sage // Nov 27, 2012 at 10:16 PM

Harper and ameobi rarely start so won’t influence the full game often.

Colo and Jonas have experience but only 3 years in the prem

Saylor is a good lad but a total sick note and with his injury record will never be more than a backup for first team.

I agree the main problem is we lack a leader like Nolan but we also lack general prem league experience

  • 302 Tsunki // Nov 27, 2012 at 10:16 PM

SuperMag – forgot to add that my point about… points is that there are still many to be had this season, or another way, many to be lost. If after Jan we have a signing or two and returning injured, we culd easily and very feasably turn into a second half of the season ‘surprise package’ again. Its as plausible, and track record so far suggests, more possible.

  • 306 Transfer Sage // Nov 27, 2012 at 10:20 PM

Not improve the scouting network, expand it.

Carr can only be in so many places at once. If we want to pick up young, talented players on the cheap then we need to scout many more countries to keep our options open.

Carr is very very good at his job but he can’t scout South America, Europe, Africa and Asia all at once.

Obviously a lot goes on we don’t hear about but the only real defenders we seems to pursue we’re debuchy and Douglas.

We should certainly have made sure we got somebody in. The fact we for nobody suggests we didn’t have many options or llambias presumed people would just sell to him if he kept asking enough

Ian, what do you mean that I’m not in the Pardew out camp this time? I’m not shouting for Pards out at all, and havent. What I have said is that Toonbanno;s comments tie up with some of mine, and i wont be in Pardews corner unless he can improve and get us moving. It might be fair to ask you now – if we have no cup run and end up 5th last, will you be looking for a new manager? I will, simply because our squad will have been underperforming and most likely, he will have shown himself to be tactically weak and a poor trainer on the training pitch. I’m hoping for improvement and am hanging in there with Pards, but if I hear more rubbish like the Cisse excuse i reserve the right to change my loyalties faster than the end of the season. That was appalling and he is going backwards and diwnwards in my estimations currently. I hope it improves because I thought we had a highly analytical coach with strong attention to detail. To date our injuries are not as relevant as he is making out and the honesty he had previously seems to have gone. Come on pardew, shake them up, and dump your 4-4-2 for once and try something new.

  • 321 Super Magpie // Nov 27, 2012 at 10:34 PM

I’m talking about experience on and off the pitch. Shola and Saylor have been here over 10 years so obviously know how most things work.
Talking about experience on the pitch, I agree with that. There is little.
You need a mix of younger and older players to have a consistenly good team.

  • 322 Transfer Sage // Nov 27, 2012 at 10:35 PM

For whatever reason Ashley doesn’t seem keen on loans. Could have had rose, lukaku, Carroll, a few more too.

Not sure why they ignored Diame though.

Maybe we don’t scout England too much as Carr spends most of his time in France and holland. Might think more bargains to be had there.

I think we have a great scout in Carr but maybe not a great scouting network

Im as pissed as everyone else with our run at the moment, and i would have loved to see a right back and centre half come in in the summer for sure, ok that did not happen, debuchy did say though that the lille president stopped it flat even though the asking price was met.

WE did not sell benny or ba or cabaye or tiorte or krul or colo or cisse, if any of them had of went MA would have got it in the neck again, many said that was as good as a new signing and plenty on here said one or two purples would go. we brought in 4 and let out 3 and kept our best players.

We will find out after january if he puts his hand in his pocket, i reckon he will spend 10 million and for those who agree which i suspect wont be that many i have to keep thinking we can still go forward after the new year, i believe we will. we are in a bad blip to say the least in the prem i know that and its hard to see us getting anything 2moro but we have to keep hoping, maybe we can get the rub of the green for a change, we got it quite a few times last season but already this we have had dogs luck, lets wait and see it might turn for us we can create chances lets just but some away.

And before i get ridiculed for the ten million figure i mentioned wait till after the jan window to have a go then feel free if we dont, cos if i get it now and we do spend you better be on your guard cos i will hunt you down!!!!! ha ha.

  • 328 Transfer Sage // Nov 27, 2012 at 10:46 PM

If the asking price was met he would be here. The Lille owner/president may have increased the price but we never met his final sling price.

And would debuchy know this? His agent may have told him that to try To get him to force a move and make him some money.

I never believe any of this stuff unless a deal is done, it’s all speculation and players/chairman/agents all have motives to release ibformation, true or false.

I for one agree we could spend ten million. I think it could be nothing or 10/12 million. It depends if the players are right value or not for Ashley.

Anyway that’s my last post tonight. See you all for the match tomorrow

  • 329 beefman13 // Nov 27, 2012 at 10:49 PM

transfer sage, debuchy himself said that a fortnight ago in the chronicle. the price was met but not accepted as lille were still in the champs league.

  • 330 Transfer Sage // Nov 27, 2012 at 10:52 PM

Yeh but what’s his motive for saying it and who told him?

Also who’s value was met? Champions league or not there is a price. It may be higher if they stayed in champs league but if te money they wanted was met we would have signed him.

The simple thing is we disnt pay enough money to get him therefore the price the owner (or whover makes the decisions) asking price wasn’t met.

  • 331 geordie157 // Nov 27, 2012 at 11:00 PM

Question, who are the two youngsters in the last pic on the Toon in training for Stoke pics?

  • 332 Jamiemac // Nov 27, 2012 at 11:19 PM

I was at the kc stadium tonight watching hull vs palace since I only live a couple miles away from the stadium.

What I saw from hull impressed me immensely. They created chance after chance and missed a tonne of sitters. Anyway how they did this was playing a 5-3-2 formation with 2 wing backs. The 3 centre mids were collecting the ball and all the time the 2 wing backs were hugging the byline and always in tonnes of space. This allowed them to either get down the line and deliver a cross or cut inside and shoot or make a pass.

I can only recall Wigan playing this formation in the prem I think but I think it’s a great way to play possession football. From what I’ve seen of hull this season Bruce has got them dominating matches but lacks a clinical finisher.

So I was thinking would this work for Newcastle? Lets say we sign debuchey and Douglas. We could play colo Taylor and Douglas as the 3 centre backs then debuchey and santon as the wing backs, tiote Anita and cab as the 3 in midfield then Ben arfa playing just behind cisse like koren played behind aluko for hull.

What are your guys thoughts on this?

  • 334 ONLINE GUY // Nov 27, 2012 at 11:32 PM

Marveaux is worth a start against Stoke

We need him to be direct, run the ball into the box ..draw the foul ..or have a pop…He is the player that can do that .

The ball is not sticking when played up to the Dembas , no hold up play so ..its coming straight out and we are getting caught on the break . Marv is a great shout for Stoke …Tell him to get at them.. and I don’t mean from the flanks .

Personal opinion on next couple of games:
Start marveaux, drop cisse. Start perch, drop williamson. Play football across the ground. Play fluidly with movement.
Get behind the team. (Applies more to home games, atmosphere is dead these days.)

when i bought my season ticket this year, it was 70% because i love being at St James’ Park watching Newcastle win football matches, and 30% to see Cabaye’s handsome face. I just realised how sad i am that he’s said Cabaye-bye to us for a little while 🙁

tequila -been off for a while getting something to eat.
I see you are still “sticking” with Simpson. Whatever he did last year was last year. He’s made loads of errors this season. I don’t know how to convince you otherwise that he is no great shakes. Oh but maybe I do, I can provide an accurate quote from somebody who knows him well, along with other footballers who she knows very well (if you get my drift):-
“I have seen him out in clubs and had a drink with him.
“He’s your average footballer, a bit cheeky and loves girls. That’s Danny, really.
“He has a lot of chat. He loves women so I think he’s well trained in what to say to them.
“He is cheesy in the bedroom and has a lot of pillow talk. But I do have a bit of a soft spot for him. I was a bit surprised when he texted me. He just kept asking the same question, ‘Are you horny’?”
Quotes from Jenny Thompson -even she says he’s an average footballer. Therefore I rest my case (adding obviously case proven).

I was reading some stuff yesterday about Ashleys finances. When he took over Newcastle, Sports Direct shares were trading at about £1.00. Now they are trading at about £3.80. So the value of his company has nearly quadrupled -so his companies association with Newcastle is clearly not negative.

  • 342 toonLYF // Nov 28, 2012 at 12:10 AM

Seems like Pardew has finally gave his set of players a reality check. By the sounds of he also perhaps tore into certain players by naming and shaming their poor attritubes and aspects of performance. Good for you Pardew.

    Goodnight Lads and Lasses.

  • 344 89Norcal // Nov 28, 2012 at 12:31 AM

    Mister Tuff,

That’s an interesting fact. I know that Sports Direct is the largest sports retailer in the UK, and perhaps MA’s acquisition of NUFC enhanced his brand’s credibility. However I would think most consumers/investors could write off any displeasure among Newcastle fans towards Ashley or the status of the club, that’s a smaller section of SD’s audience I would imagine.

In other words, Sports Direct’s business triumphs have little to do with the state of our club, especially when the Owner of both shows little interest in reinvesting the spoils into the other.

  • 345 Mister Tuff // Nov 28, 2012 at 12:37 AM

Ref Pardews latest article and him saying that he has had to revise down his anticipated 5th place finish this season.
He unfortunately is not telling the truth or Dastardly is not telling truth about Pardew.
quote from Dastardly interview with the BBC ;-
“Llambias points to Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United and Arsene Wenger at Arsenal as models of consistency upon which to base future plans, revealing Pardew’s target for this season is to finish in “eighth place or above”, but says the manager himself is keen to improve on last season’s fifth place.”
If they cannot get this stuff right -how can supporters believe the rest of the stuff they say. I’m afraid this is really amateur PR – shocking for a big club. One hand does not know what the other hand is doing -shocking.

  • 346 Mister Tuff // Nov 28, 2012 at 12:40 AM

89 norcal – the gist of the article about SD shares suggested that the association/advertising through the club had not done any harm.

  • 347 Big Pappa Cissé // Nov 28, 2012 at 12:50 AM

Ashley and Llambias are great with money but clueless when it comes to football. They just think “oh we got 5th last year with these players we don’t need investment or any fresh faces” which is ridiculous. A lot of pundits are saying we have been found out which is true in some respects. Other managers know our strengths and weaknesses now and without new blood to keep them on their toes we become very predictable indeed.

The only real posetive I can see coming from this situation is that Ashley will see not investing was a costly mistake and you need to spend money to make money in the PL. In January I would like to see a minimum of Debuchy, Sissoko, a new CB and young pacy striker that can run the channels but is content with sitting on the bench.

  • 348 brian kilclines pony tail // Nov 28, 2012 at 1:18 AM

can believe people are saying sack pards and we need 4-6 players in january.
firstly, dumping your manager at the first spot of bother is ridiculous.
Secondly, 4-6 players!!! plus the 4 that we signed in the close season that would make 8-10 new players on last seasons team, who do they think we are chelsea? Anyone who thinks we need this many players feel free to start bleeding from your eyes.

  • 349 RonVanDam // Nov 28, 2012 at 2:12 AM

I agree with Big Pappa Cissé that MA will invest in Jan. He know he made a bad call which has come back to bite him in the a…

Even if he invests 20m in the squad, he will rip the benefits of a higher placing if we manage to resurrect our placing between Jan and May. Higher placing will mean MA will make his 20m back plus free Advertising and also makes him look good to the fans

  • 350 nick_9 // Nov 28, 2012 at 3:11 AM

Brian Kilcline granted we did sign four players in the summer but you fail to mention that three were young players for the development squad having released eight youngsters already, five youngsters down by my reckoning and that’s before you even look at Smith, Guthrie, lovenkrands, Best and Forster. We lost four senior players and signed one in Anita but Bigi has progressed or been made to play in the first team due to injuries. Keeping your players shouldn’t be seen as a good transfer window, that is the outlook of a lesser club. We cannot compete with the big boys but we can do all we can to try and keep the good players here, players shouldn’t be leaving for the likes of Liverpool but man united or Real Madrid. The way things are going this season we will see the next window as a success If we keep Ba, hba and cabaye. Any other owner in the league after finishing fifth would strengthen and go for it the coming season, we didn’t. Any manager worth their salt would see what fans and even sky journalists can see in the glaringly obvious flaws we have. Any player with a bit of pride would run themselves into the ground after losing two homes on the bounce and drawing to an average European side, I’m yet to see it.

The lads and Pardew need to pull their socks up as does Ashley and llambias. The similarities between this season and the seaon we went down are endless, our point tally per game is almost identical. We still have enough time to turn it around if changes are made, I can’t take another 13 games at st James of fans getting irate and booing.

My real concern is the likes of santon and hba do jump ship for a club who appear to be going places. We’re having a torrid time and these foreign players have no reason to show loyalty to us, now even a home grown number nine could do that. We all know we need a good four or five players for the first team wether it be a couple of starters and a couple of back up players they are desperately needed, not just to show us fans we want to achieve something but players like hba who said we could challenge for the league. I would hate to see these food technical players wasted by a stubborn afraid to lose manager and a tightfisted owner.

Next season we need to finish top ten, with the new tv deal in place it is said revenue for each league position is doubled. That’s an extra 8 million for finishing in the top ten, imagine who we could sign for that. We all knew we needed defensive reinforcements and a different striker yet we failed to sign them, our midfield is barely creating so we need a winger in and a new striker as well…. Hang on that’s around four players I think my eyes are starting to bleed. Remember Pardew saying Mike Ashley had personally asked him when he was going to sign a center back? Yeah right. Get the players needed over the line and play to our strengths, 4:4:2 is done for and doesn’t suit us at all, we play 4:4:2 to accommodate cisse and Ba upfront and Jonas, tiote, cabaye and Arfa. All are seen as undroppable by Pardew. He needs to wake up before its too late, with the upcoming games we could have a mere 20 points by the half way stage. Luckily their is plenty of dross teams in the league who are looking like going down so we should be ok, if we could finish around eighth I would be pleased

  • 351 nick_9 // Nov 28, 2012 at 3:24 AM

Anita and tiote in midfield, Ben Arfa out for at least another week and Jonas in midfield who has how many assists exactly? If we was to play to our strengths we would have someone like marveaux in front of tiote and Anita who I cannot really see creating much. If Jonas is going to play against stoke please play him on the right and marveaux/ferguson on the left, heck even obertan looked better cutting in on to his right foot when he played on the left wing

Insomnia has well and truly kicked in now…. Zzzz

Useless stat no 1: Demba Ba has scored 4 goals in 3 Premier League appearances against Stoke after nearly joining them in January 2011.

  • 353 nick_9 // Nov 28, 2012 at 3:33 AM

Useless stat no 2: 6 – Stoke City have kept more clean sheets than any other team in the Premier League this season. 6 in 13 games

  • 354 Santon03 // Nov 28, 2012 at 5:39 AM

The next 3 games, if it’s going to be hoofball and 442, we will lose.
I thought that AP was always in the meeting discussing the players that Carr recommend and watched or get the report about the players. He must have seen or get the idea that the players we bought was really good players, but they were good when they were playing in their previous teams and their kind of football. I’m pretty sure Cabaye didn’t play this type of hoofball when he was with Lille, so is HBA, Anita, Santon, Cisse, Amalfitano, Obertan, MArveaux, etc. I think the players are struggling to adjust with this type of football that AP loves so much. I think this is the case of wrong players for the job, AP should have bought Crouch, Huth, AC, Kiesling, (giant type of players). How many games will it take for AP to understand his hoofball style is crap and wrong for the squad we have now? He should watch Juventus, because that’s the type of play suited to our current squad.

  • 355 Santon03 // Nov 28, 2012 at 5:45 AM

Imagine if we have Messie, Xavi, Iniesta, Ronaldo, Pirlo, Falcau and then AP asked them to play hoofball.

  • 356 Santon03 // Nov 28, 2012 at 6:02 AM

Our current playmaker is not Cabaye or HBA, but Willo and Krull.

  • 357 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Nov 28, 2012 at 7:17 AM

Santon…I don’t think the silver supremo ask them them to hoof it, I just think he set up our game play in a way where we lose possesion easily and where don’t seem to be able create chances.

…hoofball is just a by-product sadly 🙁 but If you cannot see the problem you cannot fix it – that’s our main problem I think!

  • 358 Ian Toon // Nov 28, 2012 at 7:30 AM

Santon- Maybe we could play Williamson in the hole behind Ba, what do you think?

  • 359 Ian Toon // Nov 28, 2012 at 7:38 AM

Santon- Then we could move Krul to CB and put Anita in goal, what do you think.?

  • 360 Santon03 // Nov 28, 2012 at 8:00 AM

Hahaha i sense sarcasm. Let me ask you, please answer honestly. In everygame, how many times did you see Willo and Krul kicked the ball long instead giving it to our playmaker(s) when they had the ball?

  • 361 Santon03 // Nov 28, 2012 at 8:22 AM

If AP didn’t ask them to play hoofball, then he would have realized something wrong and it didn’t go the way he planned, and tried to fix it after 2 or 3 games, right? But sadly it hasn’t changed since the start of the season.

  • 362 Rotonda heights // Nov 28, 2012 at 8:39 AM

even if we bought carroll / huth type players a team playing hoofball will only ever get mid table mediocrity and a very occasional cup run at best.

Yes Juve were awesome to watch. Simpson in Italy is like putting Allardyce in charge of barca.

  • 363 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Nov 28, 2012 at 8:44 AM

Santon…I know what you mean. I actually think he has been trying to fix it – but you cannot fix something if you don’t know what is wrong and know how to fix it.

…for Pardew it has been trial by doing (it is usually not the way forward when you are in the slumbs)

He need to realize what’s happening and do the right thing – I think he knows what it is by now, but pride and stubbornness is getting in the way.

Hence my earlier point about being willing to ‘kill your darlings’ even though it can be hard at times, but if it is not for the good of the team then make the changes.

That’s what scares me the most. Benny is a once in a generation player frozen out on the wing where he could cause havoc in the number 10 position.

Cabs one of the best ACMs in world football playing deep in a middle 2. it’s tevez and mascherano all over again. Curbishley had no problem with tevez.

  • 365 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Nov 28, 2012 at 8:50 AM
