Sylvain Marveaux has been given a starting role as Newcastle entertain Wigan Athletic tonight in the Barclays Premier League – a vital game for the Magpies.
Sylvain is preferred to Shane Ferguson and Sammy Ameobi and both Ameobi brothers are on the bench.
It seems that Cisse may be playing in a withdrawn role with Demba Ba up front – and it’s described as a 4-2-3-1 formation – which sounds over complex to us – we think it’s really a 4-2-1-2-1 formation – how about a modified 4-5-1 to keep it simple.
The only real surprise in the team is Marveaux starting, and Cheick Tiote and Vurnon Anita have an important roles to play tonight in central midfield, where we haven’t been too dominant this season – maybe that will change tonight – we hope that changes tonight.
This is an important game for Newcastle and we need a win – it’s as simple as that.
A win and we’ll be ecstatic – a draw and we’ll be OK – a defeat would be devastating.

Looks promising. If Marveaux starts in the #10 role, then he couldn’t have an easier game to try and make an impression. Hopefully he shows us what we’ve been hoping for since he signed!

Did people say that about colo last year or Shearer when he was here!? Every player has the right to get the best deal they can. You don’t just accept the first offer someone makes you, it’s called negotiating. Why would Ba stay here for 40/50k when he could go to Liverpool etc for 70/80k.
Also find it hilarious that some people say drop him and play Ranger/Campbell……….muppets

Perch is an odd one. He plays well when closer to good players, not so good when on his own.
Poor positional especially, at RB, with his pace and tackling ability he should be better.
When at DM he gets to roam and follow the ball without as much marking. And his pace and tackling ability makes him really good there.
Also next to Collo, he looks like a calm and collected defender, but he needs to be given orders at times for his position.

Anita isn’t exactly a defensive midfielder – he’s been our most creative player lately!

I dont agree this is the time to put ‘fresh’ faces – They may be fresh but that could also be called ‘green’. The cold reality is its the senior players who add stability to the core of the team, which is why Jonas for one needs to be on,. Whether you think he has a product or not, he relieves pressure in many areas, especially for those who are ‘fresh’ faces. I think the key to our performance tonight is the present team shape having a run of matches and now starting to come together. It started to look promising at Stoke. BUT we still need Cabs and HBA back asap. Cabs has been carrying one for a while for me, but even under par he is still a key team member.

I didnt say Cabs has been in great form all the time, and yes he turns into a different player when in his natural forward-looking role. I just suspect his poorer showing this year has maybe been down to carrying a niggle, I can imagine the coaching staff nursing it hoping it will carry through but didnt work out.
I back Jonas for one because his work usually pays dividends in plugging critical gaps in front of defence. Second, who on earth would we put on instead of him?

I know it’s against 10 men, but hopefully this will show Pardew and the players that they CAN play good passing football.
None of us care if they mix it up a bit from time to time, of course, but lately it’s been turgid.
The only danger has come from Williamson, Colo and Tiote trying to overplay – which appears all too common lately, especially Tiote.
The pressing from the front is what you get with a 3 pronged attack – especially when we have three CM’s willing to run all day long.
It’s great to see Marveaux working so so hard as well. You can tell he wants to impress, and that’s really pleasing seeing as how he’s been shut out for months now.

Regardless of if we re playing against 10men we are still pressing them and showing like the players are actually wanting it unlike previous. Just giving credit where its due and on that first half it may not have been amazing n Wigan may have been poor but we are showing we want it a hell of a lot more than previous games.

Ok we got a massive break, but this is the best we’ve played all season. It’s terrific, looks like 433 and not a hoof in sight even from Willo and Simmo.

Stam seems decent everytime e i have seen wigan he has bombed down the right and put good balls in likes to take on people. Not sure how good defensively is but definitely decent going forward and only young i believe.

For me i hope Santon is ok more than i do ba. I think if ba is not on the pitch you will see a different player in cisse and he will get us some goals. Overall thought ba had a very good game tonight but anita, marv and Santon were the standout players.

Bigi’s goal was amazing and a real highlight. Ba/Cisse cannot link up well and don’t look like a partnership. Relieved to get 3 points but difficult to gauge whether we have turned the corner coz of early Red for Wigan.

I think our zest went when Anita and Marveaux especially tired at the end, Sammy is not ready by any means.
I admit this was a poor game for Jonas. It almost looks like there is something fundamentally wrong with him, he was nowhere near the ball tonight.
Congrats to Bigi for grabbing the game by the nuts and bagging a special one. Better than Tiote thalf for half, the bad guy better watch his back.
Fergy good contribution our forwards really should have made more of his service. Cisse was in the right places for a change, his day will come against fulham now Ba is out.
