Danny Simpson’s True Intentions – To Be Free Agent In Summer

10:37 am, Wednesday, December 5th, 2012 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 311 Comments

We have an inkling that Danny Simpson is doing the same thing as Jose Enrique did last year, when he kept saying he liked playing for Newcastle, but would not commit to signing a new deal, and he eventually signed on at Liverpool last year for about £6M.

Danny Simpson – becomes a free agent this summer

And we think Danny’s aim is to leave the club in the summer, but try to make as few waves as possible until then,

Alan Pardew is still playing him in the first team, although that may change if a club comes in for him in January and offers a reasonable fee, because Newcastle are likely to take it – as long as they can bring in a suitable replacement in January.

Danny was asked in the local press this morning whether he still wanted to be part of Pardew’s squad come February:

“Of course, it’s a while away yet, but if I have it my way, hopefully, I’ll be playing in the next phase. I love playing in Europe.” “I’m enjoying every minute of it.”

But the question should have been is it his intention to leave the club before next September?

What Danny says is that he could still be at Newcastle in February, but still not have signed a new deal to stay on Tyneside, so it would be  even better for him because he will become a free agent in the summer, and could get a decent deal worked out with another club, simply because they don’t have to pay any transfer fee to Newcastle.

Simpson has said many time over the last 18 months that he would love to stay, but the proof of the pudding is in the eating – so how come he hasn’t signed a deal that Newcastle have offered him?

We’d be surprised if Danny is at the club come September.

What do you think?

Q for torrent of Simmo abuse.

  • 2 toonarmydownsouth // Dec 5, 2012 at 10:40 AM

The question is are we ambitious enoungh for danny what with all those big italian teams after him!!

  • 3 toonarmydownsouth // Dec 5, 2012 at 10:43 AM

    Tequila
just for the record this isnt simmo abuse just laughing at the media!

  • 4 tequilamag // Dec 5, 2012 at 10:46 AM

I know mate. Defence is the one area where pards has not been able to put his own stamp on the team(with the exception of Santon). We all know that CB is a priority but Simmo is also ripe for an upgrade. Would have been happy to get him signed up for a new contract as cover but this seems unlikely.

  • 5 rainrix // Dec 5, 2012 at 10:49 AM

I actually though that simmo was excellent against wigan….. defensively ;). He bailed out colo and willo a few times mainly when they were trying to be too clever.

Shockingly his forward play was none existent :)

  • 6 nufc_eire // Dec 5, 2012 at 10:51 AM

Bring in debuchy and have danny as backup for the remainder of the season if we cant sell him. Love to see us try and bid for Adil Rami from Valencia. He’s 6’3″ and fairly fast as well and would be great beside debuchy. They’re in serious financial trouble and this could be like a Cazorla type deal. Even see if we could get Feghouli as well for 15m all in!! Ashley would love the idea of taking advantage of another struggling company’s misfortune. He could actually go for it if he thinks he’s getting a bargain

  • 7 tequilamag // Dec 5, 2012 at 10:52 AM

Rainrix, very few FBs are good at both. Not many Leighton Baines about. I am a bit old fashioned in that I think defenders should be judged on their defending. Always liked Simmo but if it`s an area we can improve then we should.

  • 8 mindshaft // Dec 5, 2012 at 10:57 AM

Simmos a decent enough defender albeit not world class, by all accounts (well his ex-missus) he’s spends money like wata ! presumably he’ll be able to double his money or get a huge signing on bonus if a club doesn’t have to pay to get him through the door … fair enough, he’s done a decent job for the toon and only ever had good things to say about the club and fans
I don’t mind players leaving to earn as much as poss as long as they leave with dignity (albeit the press make that difficult by twisting every word said by players)

  • 9 rainrix // Dec 5, 2012 at 10:58 AM

tequila… True but i’d say santons goodish at both, maybe improve his defensive skills a bit more. I’ve honestly stopped expecting attacking play from simmo, although he is relatively solid so I’m not complaining. Obviously i’d like a full back like santon who can actually get out of defence himself without hoofing it, by the looks of things he’s off anyway

  • 10 Slank // Dec 5, 2012 at 11:03 AM

I think Simpson is going to be replaced irrespective of his wishes or wants.

I cannot see the club repeating what happened with Enrique.

Simpson is a good defender but in todays Premiership a fullback has to be good at defending and attacking and Simpson is next to hopeless at attacking. I had hoped that Tavernia would make the grade as he has an attacking instinct.

Against Wigan he showed little or no determination, energy or desire to initiate an attack or support an attack, unlike Santon who does it every game without fail. The Wigan left side had an easy time as they knew that he posed them no threat unlike Santon.

I would prefer a new left footed left back (Patrick Van Aanholt perhaps with Santon on the right) but will gladly welcome any new right back who can match Santon for attacking prowess and defending.

  • 11 cyprus // Dec 5, 2012 at 11:07 AM

If he’s ever read this blog, (and why not, would you not look up what people are saying about you?), he knows how venomous NUFC fans can be, despite his professionalism, despite the fact that he shored up our defense in the championship when the Taylors played there (RB) when we got relegated…
And he seems like a nice lad who never criticised NUFC fans.
Good luck mate, wherever you do decide to go, and keep giving your all for us, please

  • 12 Transfer Sage // Dec 5, 2012 at 11:08 AM

Simpson is the worst attacking fullback in the league. I can’t think of any others which are so reluctant to get forward and then have such poor delivery.

Not his fault, it’s just not his strength, but we need to improve.

Even watching players for west brom, reading, etc….they may not be great but certainly better than simpson.

I defended him a long time here but he hasn’t improved during the last couple years…that disappoints me about him.

  • 13 Transfer Sage // Dec 5, 2012 at 11:12 AM

    Cyprus

I have nothing against him, he seemed like a nice lad (until this tulisa stuff came out), but I just don’t think he is good enough.

I don’t deny he trues in a game but I dont understand why he hasn’t worked on getting forward and improving his play a bit more.

  • 14 cyprus // Dec 5, 2012 at 11:12 AM

He’s is not an attacking fullback, or a ‘flying fullback’, he’s a defender. Attacking full backs who are good at both roles are hard to come by… I can think of no more than 5 in the whole PL

  • 15 t00ntime // Dec 5, 2012 at 11:13 AM

Defensivly we arent going to get a better RB than simpson. Debuchy isnt better than simmo at defending and i dont think santon is either. The problem is nowadays fullbacks are attacking postions (not sure why)
Debuchy is better going forward than simmo yes and so is santon but imo we shud have a option weather we want a defensive or offensive FB, If you know what i mean. We shud keep simmo AND sign debuchy. Letting simmo go solves nothing cause we will still only have 1 rb

  • 16 WorJordi // Dec 5, 2012 at 11:13 AM

Wigans Right back “Stam” was very impressive on Wednesday. Could be a good replacement for Danny Simpson who, if he wants to leave, the club should help him. He’s been a good reliable player. I can see him ending up at Fulham or the likes of.

  • 17 tequilamag // Dec 5, 2012 at 11:13 AM

TS , bit harsh mate , would not say he is the worst by any means. Like I said before defenders should be judged first and foremost by how well they defend. 15 clean sheets with Simmo playing last season suggests he is not anywhere near as bad as many would have it.

  • 18 WorJordi // Dec 5, 2012 at 11:15 AM

Hi everyone, hope everyone is having a good day.
Wigans Right back “Stam” was very impressive on Wednesday. Could be a good replacement for Danny Simpson who, if he wants to leave, the club should help him. He’s been a good reliable player. I can see him ending up at Fulham or the likes of.

  • 19 Transfer Sage // Dec 5, 2012 at 11:17 AM

    tequila

name a worse attacking RB in the league?

    Cyprus

He isn’t attacking…I dont expect him to have the level of a cafu or roberto carlos, but just to work on getting forward, have the odd one two, occupy a player to give ben arfa more room and to put a decent cross in every now and then.

I just expect that a pro footballer should always be looking to imrpove. I accept he won’t ever be a world class attacker but he should have at least kicked on and shown some effort to improve that side of his game.

  • 20 Scottiedog // Dec 5, 2012 at 11:18 AM

Danny is a proven premier league RB and we need to keep him!! Why get somebody in from the Dutch or French league in who is going to take half a season to get up to speed!?!?!?!?!? Just pay the guy the £30k a week that he wants and move on!!!

  • 21 Graeme // Dec 5, 2012 at 11:19 AM

If he goes – he goes, simple as that. I’m sure Mr Carr will know of one or two suitable candidates to replace him, if that’s what it boils down to.

Don’t think I will be losing too much sleep over this, one way or the other!!

  • 22 Transfer Sage // Dec 5, 2012 at 11:21 AM

also I would disagree he is good at defending…he is average.

His positioning is quite good, and he seems to read a situation to cover quite well or get on the line.

The main problem defensively is he seems to stand too deep off a player…lets them get a cross/shot in without having to beat him and also retreats into our box meaning if he gets the tackle wrong its a pen..which ends up him just standing off more.

also by not getting forward it just invites more pressure on himself meaning he has more defending to do as opposition wingers don’t need to track simmo when we attack.

  • 23 Transfer Sage // Dec 5, 2012 at 11:22 AM

    scottie

he just isn’t good enough in the modern game.

wait and see which club he ends up at…i bet its either a newly promoted prem club or a championship one.

Just my opinion of it but can’t see him going to an established prem club at all.

  • 24 tequilamag // Dec 5, 2012 at 11:26 AM

TS on his first game back from injury he set up a goal in the EL . Santon for all his ability to bring the ball forward does not get many crosses in. Perhaps because he would have to cross with his weaker foot. Fergie looks the only one of our players who is constantly looking to get past a defender and whip in a cross., but he looks weak defensively. Singling out Simmo for a poor final ball whilst making a convenient scapegoat is not helpful. Its been a weakness for all our players this season.

  • 25 Dannyo // Dec 5, 2012 at 11:27 AM

Simmo is a defender in the best sense of the word.
We want and need someone able to go forward and put a cross or a pass in, Simmo is incapable of that, and he knows it.
Hence the reason for him staying back.
He’s good defensivly i think, but if we want to update our game, you need a Debuchy type FB.

  • 26 Transfer Sage // Dec 5, 2012 at 11:29 AM

    tequila

no doubt all our players have been poor with final balls this year.

simmo has never been good though…he can’t cross, just floats it into the box.

I dont expect beckham quality or beating a man…but a lot of the time ben arfa gets doubled up on and simmo has acres of room to cross and still just dinks it aimlessly into the box.

He is a professional and should be much better at that.

Defensively i would have him as an average full back…offensively like i said…i cant think of a full back that offers less going forward

  • 27 Blaydon-Toon // Dec 5, 2012 at 11:32 AM

Morning lads and lasses ! I Truley am our saviour as never seen the toon loose at SJP and was there for the Wigan game. All those who said Stam their RB was a constant threat all game totally agree he was their best player by a mile …. Anita for me was our best player by a mile can see his quality coming shining through ! Marv also impressed me but think playing him more central against 11 he may not have been as affective ! Finally on Simmo always like the lad as a defender but definitely lacks an attacking threat – he had loads of space at times and never went forward given they had 10 men means even just running into the space would have stretched Wigan but he very rarely went for it which made the second half less entertaining ! Ps mrs Blaydon loved it so could do it a bit more :-)

  • 28 Transfer Sage // Dec 5, 2012 at 11:32 AM

    tequila

santon may not get goals or assists much either…but its the intent he shows…he gets forward, makes quick runs, drags players out of position to free up room out wide for other players.

I still think santon has a long way to go, and whilst he might be ok with his left, I’d much rather have him on the right as he could beat his man and cross.

Fergie isn’t a full back for me, too weak and easy to shrug off the ball. I would have simpson ahead of fergie at full back all day long.

  • 29 Scottiedog // Dec 5, 2012 at 11:34 AM

TS so is it worth losing a decent RB in Jan for £3m and being light for the rest of the season until we can get somebody upto speed?? Yes he is not a top drawer RB but he does do a good job!!

  • 30 tequilamag // Dec 5, 2012 at 11:35 AM

Blaydon, you do realise that you now have to attend all games both home and away. We cant` afford to let standards slip now. Pleased you got up for a good one mate.

  • 31 Blaydon-Toon // Dec 5, 2012 at 11:37 AM

Transfer totally agree on Santon but he is starting to get a few shots in now and did put in a lovely cross against Wigan but ultimately think HBA and Santon over lapping would make us a more fluid attacking threat which would cause any team a problem ! Are there any decent LB out there tho ?

  • 32 Dannyo // Dec 5, 2012 at 11:37 AM

    @Scottie
I’ll help answer your question to TS.
Yes, it is worth. First of all, we get the money out of it, he’ll probably leave for free in the summer anyway. And 3mill now is a hell of a deal anyways, cause i think we’ll be lucky if we get 2 mill.
2nd, the new player will be ready for the next season as he has half of one under his belt. Half a season now or half a season next year, what difference does it make?

  • 33 Transfer Sage // Dec 5, 2012 at 11:38 AM

    scottie

I don’t think we would get 3mil for him to be honest. I also realise it’s a gamble bringing in another full back who hasn’t got prem experience mid season as they have no time to settle.

Ideally let him go in the summer for free (as whatever fee we receive isn’t going to be much really, rather have cover) and bring a right back in during january.

Forward to my ticket will email address details once collection is sorted :-)

    Sage @ 28

Absolutely agree with you about Santon and Fergie.

I can’t remember a memorable (or any) Simpson assist unlike Santons against Wigan and Cisse’s first goal against Chelsea last season.

  • 37 Slank // Dec 5, 2012 at 11:46 AM

    Blaydon @ 31

    Patrick Van Aanholt ?

Always out on loan, not wanted by Chelsea. Has played for us and therefore ‘better the devil you know etc’. If I remember we all thought he was pretty good. I would think that Krul and Anita would welcome him.

  • 38 tequilamag // Dec 5, 2012 at 11:46 AM

    tequila

Thats one we can think of in 2/3 years?

I’m not saying i dislike him or think he is a terrible defender. he just does nothing going forward.

I noticed a few times against wigan you say ba/cisse (whoever was right at the time) waiting for simmo to overlap but he just stoo behind them wanting the ball there….he needs to get forward even if his only use is to drag one player from their defence with him.

  • 46 Blaydon-Toon // Dec 5, 2012 at 11:57 AM

Ts I noticed that guess u can’t see it all the time watching on t v but I was sreaming my head off for him to at least run into the space would open up gaps for other players !

  • 47 tequilamag // Dec 5, 2012 at 11:59 AM

TS he was credited with 2 assists last season Santon got one, though to be fair Santon played only half the games Simmo did.

  • 48 Transfer Sage // Dec 5, 2012 at 11:59 AM

    Blaydon

Exactly. That’s something he could improve on over night. Crossing could take a while to come but just simply running past the winger to create space and take a man away is basics.

  • 49 Fostino // Dec 5, 2012 at 12:00 PM

danny is a reliable but average full back. dosnt give many opyions when attacking. modern wingbacks need to have that abiity and a top club like newcastle should get one. debuchy would be ideal.

in other issues…a mention for williamson and marv. i think will when he plays with colo looks solid. i always worry when will nd taylor are partnered together…they lack that calmness. willon been consisently good and available for selection…wins everything in the air and as a cb, thats priceless.

marv..im delighted to see him do well monday and he now has the jersey so it s up to him to keep it. i was happy when i heard he was playing instead of perch. no offence to perch as he has done so well but its a home game and having an attacking threat when hba was out was important.

anita is also doing very well

Never mind, move on quickly, copy something from the Chronicle and put Pardew’s face at the top (and ‘HWTL’ at the bottom) and they’ll all be a jumpin’ for joy.

This blog makes Daily Star articles look like journalism at times.

  • 54 Slank // Dec 5, 2012 at 12:05 PM

    Transfer and Blaydon

Watching Simpson is similar to watching Obertan but for the opposite reasons.

Simpson appears that he doesn’t want to get forward too quickly whilst Obertan races off too quickly (usually into a cul- de-sac) leaving everyone behind.

  • 55 beefman13 // Dec 5, 2012 at 12:06 PM

    , E
Even now tav is a better footballer than Simpson, and Fergie dosnt get pushed off the ball, tav was superb against Man U in the league cup hAd a bad first half against atrimitos which is fair enough but the lad loves to get forward and has the pace to get back as we’ll and can beat a Player which Simpson cannot, get a bit fed up with posters saying Fergie is lightweight, ask his teammates if that is true, they all say he is very hard to shake of the ball. santon is a lad who loves to get forward and that is great but he has to look to play in whoever is in front of him from time to time he is not a winger or maybe he should be tried out on the wing a good lad but quite selfish in his play, will AP play perch an Jonas in the middle as against stoke? If he does then we are going to try a smash and grab and it will be all hands on deck, I hate seeing us play this way, we have even now creative players who should be kept in the team, perch like Jonas just runs Around trying to put a foot in, nothing productive going forward, we got three vital points on Monday lets keep being positive even if it is an away game we are better than a backs Gainst the wall side if our manager sets us up right we have the players to beat Fulham let’s just get more supply and keep moving forward,.

  • 58 rainrix // Dec 5, 2012 at 12:10 PM

Blaydon…. Wouldn’t mind seeing perch at CB against fulham either. Perch is fine at cb as long as we aren’t playing against tall physical players, he gets bullied to easily by them but his tackling and pace are useful against smaller teams.

  • 59 Transfer Sage // Dec 5, 2012 at 12:11 PM

    beefman

From the bits I have seen of fergie this year there are a lot of times he gets out muscled.

He is tough in the tackle, certainly puts himself about, he is just weak and easily knocked off the ball and loses a lot of 50/50s when defending going shoulder to shoulder.

3/4 months of gym work should sort him out though, he just needs to get a little bigger and stronger but not so much it damages the other aspects of his game.

  • 60 Slank // Dec 5, 2012 at 12:13 PM

    Beefman

I have always rated Tavernia. Much better than Fergie.

He has an advantage over Fergie in that he is a taller and has a bigger physique. He can also play at centre back, if all else fails!

  • 61 Transfer Sage // Dec 5, 2012 at 12:13 PM

I agree with you on Tav..he hasn’t convinced me he is ready for the first team yet.

He hasn’t stepped up….ideally I would like to have seen him have a loan in the championship instead of league one.

  • 62 Blaydon-Toon // Dec 5, 2012 at 12:14 PM

Williamson looks nervous in possesion and worries me when he has the ball but he did ok against Wigan but never convincing might get the nod for Fulham to mark Hangerland from set pieces !?

  • 65 Ian Toon // Dec 5, 2012 at 12:16 PM

Traansfer@28- Spot on. Your right to contrast and compare Santon and Simpson. Tequila- is right that the primary function is to defend but I question whether Simpson fulfils this. (Before going on he had one of his better games on Monday). At times he has poor positional awareness, doesn’t hold a good line and fails to cover across the line.
No slouch but he is guilty of strolling back when were under pressure.
I really am not a fan. I thought he did OK in the Championship.
All that aside, in the modern game full backs can’t be one dimensional.
You’ve got to be good bombing forward , comfortable on the ball and have the skill to go past players whilst being able to cross the ball or shoot at goal. I am critical of Simpson because he is lazy he has done just enough to get by for seasons. Mind you it’s not his fault that we haven’t signed a replacement. I suspect that Tavernier was being lined up to replace him but his development stalled. Simpson simply hasn’t worked at his craft and just stood still. I wasn’t really bothered whether he signed eventually from Man U or not Actually he’s held us back because we are far more predictable as an attacking force and
along with Williamson prevents us quite often from building play from the back.

  • 66 Blaydon-Toon // Dec 5, 2012 at 12:18 PM

  • 68 Transfer Sage // Dec 5, 2012 at 12:21 PM

    Ian

Thats the thing with simpson…I don’t get why he can’t work on his crossing in training…he might never be able to beat a man…thats a lot more natural talent/balance/agility etc but he certainly could learn to cross the ball with a bit of pace on it and definitely just overlap the winger

  • 69 Slank // Dec 5, 2012 at 12:21 PM

    Ian

    Totally agree.

On the left of our defence I always get the sense that between them Colo and Santon will spark an attack and usually play the ball on the ground whereas with Williamson and Simpson it appears that the Big Hoof Forward is the prime and more often than not the only option.

  • 73 tequilamag // Dec 5, 2012 at 12:25 PM

Ian, I quite enjoy playing the Devils Advoctae. But to clarify my position. Simmo is not the best going forward and as a defender is competent rather than great. RB and CH are the 2 positions most in need of an upgrade. However as things stand at the moment I really can`t see a better alternative to Simmo at RB.

  • 74 kt97toonarmy // Dec 5, 2012 at 12:26 PM

tequila debuchy would be because he is simmo with an attacking sense

  • 75 Slank // Dec 5, 2012 at 12:26 PM

    kt97

Ben Arfa frequently comes inside taking the fullback and often another defender with him.

If we had a right back like Santon how much more effective and dangerous that would be, wouldn’t you agree?

what impressed me most about the wigan game was marvoux and anita

not only were they good with the ball going forward they also dropped deep to collect it off willo and simmo.

We know willo wont thread a 20 yard ball through midfield so it was good to see these players dropping off to give him an option

I know your the head of the youngsters fanclub but come on man
Tav was woeful in the league cup rafeal and RVP were playing piggy in the middle with him!
And fergie is not hard to shake off the ball he simply gets nudged and he’s off he doesn’t take people on his positioning is absolutely terrible!
As for asking his team mates theres no need the fact that they are so reluctant to pass to him and wont unless theres nothing else on speaks enough!
As for his crossing yup he gets the ball in but for me his crosses are like simmo’s high and floaty with no pace
    Sorry

  • 81 Dannyo // Dec 5, 2012 at 12:30 PM

    @TS
Fergie needs far more than 3-4 months.
His metabolism at such a young age makes it very, very difficult to gain weight. Especially with all the cardio work done in addition to last 90 mins on a field.
He’ll need atleast a year to get up to speed, and he started that process a long time ago.
Balance work and stuff that helps his agility is the way to go atm. He needs to get paceier to avoid being outmuscled. In his movement of the body that is, not in a straight line ;)
He’s got that in him, you can see he’s pretty swift, he needs to work that to his advantage.

  • 82 Transfer Sage // Dec 5, 2012 at 12:31 PM

Everyone is aware that we need a fullback and centre back.

Pardew even identified this pre season….the problem is the idiots above him (especially llambias) failed in their efforts to sign 2 players.

one of which desperately wanted to join us and another who’s contract was up in 1 year….even with that on his side he failed to negotiate a deal….llambias is the one person at the club who should face the sack…esepcially if we have a bad january window.

  • 83 Big Pappa Cissé // Dec 5, 2012 at 12:34 PM

Personally I would not bat an eyelid if Simpson left as it seems he cares more about that Mong from the X factor (God I hate that show) than sorting out his NUFC future. If he loved it here he would have signed up by now.

    The bad

He has virtually no offensive game whatsoever which for a modern day fullback is unacceptable considering he has decent pace and putting in crosses is schoolboy stuff

He backs of attackers far to much inviting pressure onto the CB’s and if he gets the chance to tackle it will be much closer to the box and risk giving away a penalty.

He very rarely overlaps his winger to create space and drag players away and create space.

He is one of the main culprits of hoofball at the club.

    The good.

    He stays relatively injury free

    Not bad at defending

Again I would not be heartbroken if he left in the slightest and someone like Debuchy would completely transform our right hand side.

  • 84 Transfer Sage // Dec 5, 2012 at 12:34 PM

    dannyo

I’d be tempted to do to fergie what they do in other sports.

Just give him 2/3 months away from playing football and get him in the gym…1-2 sessions 4/5 times a week and just get him in top physical condition.

It’s done often in sports like cricket and rugby for international players where the schedules aren’t as intense as club players.

  • 85 tequilamag // Dec 5, 2012 at 12:37 PM

TS failure to strengthen the defence is a gamble that has clearly not paid off. I think it`s interesting to note that defence is the one area that Pardew has not been able to get his own players in.(apart from santon). I would hope and expect that this is the area that we will strengthen in Jan.

  • 86 Dannyo // Dec 5, 2012 at 12:41 PM

    @TS
Ye, it’s far from a bad idea. He needs it, and by the looks of it, the work he does in the gym coupled with all the cardio, increases the chances of getting injured.
    As his injury record shows.
It wears down the muscles and you need 48 hours for them to restitute (i think thats the word for it.).
So training in between that doesn’t help. But i’m sure AP and the physios has that figured out.
Altho your plan is not a bad one, it halts is general progress on the ball. So it’s a work in progress i guess, but it’s gonna take a while.

  • 88 Transfer Sage // Dec 5, 2012 at 12:44 PM

    Dannyo

Ideally we could do that over the summer….maybe start may and have him in thegym until august.

Prepare him for a season almost the way a boxer prepares for a fight….just give him a lot of physial training and incorporate a lot of his cardio work into technique based drills too.

  • 89 Dannyo // Dec 5, 2012 at 12:47 PM

    @tequilamag
I bet their thoughts was something down the line like:
“We haven’t got the ones we wanted, and we won’t go getting stop gaps as it won’ build anything.
We managed to get out of it quite well last year, and with the added strength through the youth, we will probably be ok again this year.” (Thinking of Tav, Streete, possibly Good, maybe Dummet too)
Then there’s a shitbrick of injuries and none of the defenders really comes to the fore as well as hoped.
Gamble indeed, but one who failed sadly.

  • 90 Ian Toon // Dec 5, 2012 at 12:53 PM

Transfer – You could of course have a two week holiday at the end of the season and then get into the gym. So that when you report back for pre season at the club your general fitness level and muscle tone would be much improved. Years ago as a kid I read how Kevin Keegan had improved season by season as a result of constantly working on his game in an almost manic way. He claimed not to have natural ability but didn’t he become European footballer of the year in consecutive years. There are excuses like long term injuries to prevent such deliberation. However good circulation and muscle tone as well as diet helps to offset many muscle injuries. Gerrard as a teenager was plagued with such injuries but went on a rigorous training programme.

yea i know i support fergies corner as i do tavernier to a lesser extent and also adam campnell massive shame the lad is out, i dont say it beacuse they are youngins ive been to the training grouund to reserve games since these lads joined the club and they more than hold their own with any one at the toon, i seem to remember tav pushin rooney of the ball two or three times in that league cup game, was Van persie even playing in that league cup game. did fergie get done by any wigan defender on monday, i dont think he did, he maybe is not a full on flying in tackle type but he has made more goals and put more crosses in than simpson has done in a season. tds three of them floating crosses as you say found the heads of our strikers and created goals, and two others have been connected with and hit the woodwork with the other being cleared of the line, we are a funny lot after the everton game marveaux did not get a mention for a month now and i agree he is getting a lot of positives beacuse he is getting playing time. tds its an opinion v an opinion some players we like some players we dont i suppose.

I think a lot of football clubs, even in the premier league are quite behind with fitness training.

There was an article where pep guaridola was shocked at how unfit fabregas was when he joined barcelona.

Now aresenal are one the fittest teams I would suspect, a lot of quick movement and a lot of pressing the ball means there fitness must be quite high.

If they are that unfit then what is happening with a lot of other teams.

    totally with you on campbell

he is a talent every time i have seen him. He is at that age now, with the right level of ability, where he just needs a run in the first team.

like rooney, fabregas, balotelli at that age…get them in an around the first team.

Shola may offer options but he is getting no better…campbell would be great to close games as teams would fear his pace on the couter.

Theres a difference between the training ground and reserves and the PL
Fergie got dragged constantly out of position against wigan and that lead to colo coming way across to cover his errors until jonas basically baby sat him through the game and 2 of his 4 crosses went out of play one the keeper watched all day before catching and one was decent, thats no better return than anyone else
Yeah RVP played and tav got skinned alive just like that greek mob and just like his half hour cameo in the league
Campbell once again looks good in the reserves but cant comment past that
These lads are all good prospects but are no where near first team standard

For me this is the problem with our youth set up
You get a one in a million player like your rooneys or owens but there rare
The step betwenn the reserves and the league is huge and theres too much pressure for these lads to make the jump
None of them should even be mentioned in terms of the first team without a loan spell at a decent level of competition

  • 97 Tsunki // Dec 5, 2012 at 1:13 PM

I dunno I am not saying anything about Simmo until Ketsy gives his verdict.

Simmo plays the attacking FB but can’t do it. He’s a decent defender when he sticks to his area, just wish he’d stick to what he’s best at and not drift forward dragging willo across two lanes. As long as we don’t get another Thingy Carr I don’t mind mostly who we get to replace him.

  • 98 beefman13 // Dec 5, 2012 at 1:13 PM

I have to mention the fact that while we did not bring in the extra couple of players needed in the summer ie RB and CH and in highnsight at the moment it looks a bad decision but who is to say they would have settled, maybe they would have got injured, again nobody knows.

What if we had of sold any of Ba or cisse or ben arfa or cabaye and replaced them with players who cost less and did not perform, the owner would have got it in the neck again, many said we would sell at least on of them in the summer as rumours were flying around.

We have got the i told you so brigade, and they are in the majority, the ones who said we would be no where near europe last season, wont ever get out of the coca cola within three years, how we would go straight back down when we came up etc etc.

Now beacuse of a poor start to the season the chests are puffed out and they are being hollier than thou, the season is not even near half over, i have said we have the players even now to collect points its the formation and tactics that needed to change as they did on monday night.

Hignsight is a great thing but all the ones wollowing in the fact that we have not started of to well just have a look over the past three seasons when virtually all your predictions were wrong.

Take the rough with the smooth and lets not look to smug at the moment eh!!!

I have mentioned these facts befeore about the previous three years at NUFC its not all doom and gloom we still have a UTD dressing room we were the first english club to progress in europe, we sit middle table lets just wind our necks in a bit please.

There is a big step up I agree. So there is not much to be gained spending yet after year in he reserves as you reach a plateau.

I think tav and to a lesser extent fergie have shown they aren’t there yet.

Campbell hasn’t had a real go but he is amazing in those Nike cups and on player of tournament two years running. Like tevez and xavi did.

Chuck him in and give him a run of 5/6 games off the bench, maybe a start in a cup and see what he does.

Really like you say these boys need a loan at a good level, preferably the championship standard or above.

  • 101 Ian Toon // Dec 5, 2012 at 1:19 PM

Tads- Absolutely right. We’ve got to get prospects out on loan playing truly competitive football. Quite often there is a lack of physicality and pace at Under 21 level. It was rumoured that Abeid last season turned down an option to go out on loan.

TDS i dont think our younger players have let us down one bit, after all most of them have guided us through a fairly tricky opening stages of the europa with a game to spare and even when the so called purples have been introduced we did not look any better.

Our europa teams have performed as well as our prem team for me with the younger players, its not a point of if they look good training it is they have looked the part in our starting eleven and have not let us down in any way.

Its the so called purple players who have got us to the point in the prem when we have started poorly. not the younger players.

Transfer- Players have a responsibility for their own fitness levels. A fitness coach should even at Williamson’s advanced age be able to improve his pace and movement. Some form of interval training would improve his standing jump off when heading. For a big guy he’s not particularly good in the air.

Beef I have spent what feels like the entire season defending Pardew. That does not mean that the clubs recruitment in the Summer is exempt from criticism. Don`t see it as hindsight, most people were unhappy that defence was not strengthened.
We all love the idea that young players will be a force but sadly most do not make it. I sincerely hope that Fergie Tav and Sasmmy et al make the step up but it is not a foregone conclusion.

Beefman- You do Jonas a disservice. Fergi is your man we all understand that but he’s not ready for a starting role in the PL he needs to work hard and train hard. Physically he looks and plays like a late developer. Watching him at under21 level is deceiving because he’s not extended in the manner of PL. Jonas is not set for the knackers yard just yet. If I had to get results in forthcoming games then Jonas would be one of the first on the team sheet. It might not have occurred to you that Jonas appears to be carrying an injury. Just a thought. I recall you along with the late Jimmy Magpie slating Cabaye as being unfit and calling for him to be dropped. It now appears obvious that he was injured post Euro’s. With the Physi’s recommending rest rather than an operation. Hence he didn’t train for a long while. Jonas to start unless a rest would help in the long run.

Gary Speed and Rob Lee made the transition from wing to CM at the same age as Jonas now and went on to play some of the best football of their careers

  • 127 Ian Toon // Dec 5, 2012 at 2:20 PM

Tequila- Pardew has used Jonas this season to sort a problem usually defensively. Remember the ManU game when we were blitzed , it was Jonas that was used by Pardew to steady the ship in central midfield. He’s the go to man and not someone who he’s going to cast aside easily. In the tough spell we’ve had some of the prospects have not overly impressed. I see them in Cameo roles and that includes Bigi.

Fostino- I was about to go but spotted your other post to me. If he is injured it will be known to physio’s and Pardew. They could be looking ahead to HBA coming back for Fulham game. Often players play through the pain barrier and injury in key games especially. Shearer was phenomenal towards the end of his career he played when more often than not he was carrying an injury. i completely understand that, but managers can be unreasonable..i feel a player is better off getting themselves fixed up instead of not being 100%. managers obviously want to win and they’ll risk playing you as they prob feel a 60% version of you will be better than the alternative replacement. they’re only out to win it for themselves, they don’t care of the agony u may go through game to game as long as you can run out on the pitch the next game is what ive learned and if you get injured…its good luck until your fit again. your right, pardrew does rate jonas highly and he could well be carrying a knock, but if he is, he should be rested and another player should be given the chance

  • 139 Transfer Sage // Dec 5, 2012 at 2:58 PM

For me Jonas is a waste on the wing…he doesn’t get forward as much as he did and his delivery is very poor.

As a CM he could be a useful squad player but ultimately not a starter for me.

He is part of the problem with Pardew’s set up. We look to contain every team we play instead of trying to stamp our authority.

Anit, marvoux, tiote and cabaye…any 3 of them in midfield ahead of jonas.

jonas could be used in ganes where we are up against it maybe but most games I wouldn’t have him in the side.

Its good to see that people actually do analyse the performance of a player rather than a large number of people on here going nuts because you dared to criticise. simmo is average defensively as he stands way to deep off his man and going forward has nothing. I cant wait to see a player who can offer support to HBA in an attacking sense it will open up even more room for him to destroy teams. At the moment he has to beat the LM and the LB because simmo doesnt do anything and if he does make a run the opposition dont mark him tightly anyway as they know he offers nothing.

  • 141 Ketsbaia9 // Dec 5, 2012 at 3:46 PM

Simpson is unbelievably poor at defending. Him and Williamson were the main reasons why we didn’t get in the champions league spots last season. Signing Debuchy, Alderewield, Sissokho and Remy will be a successful window.

  • 142 Nufc-83 // Dec 5, 2012 at 4:14 PM

Kets some of your points are valid however the majority is utter rubbish. If we signed the players you mentioned above the window would be unbelievable and that’s the point it is not going to happen. The fact that you think Abied should be in the 1st team is also ridiculous as you probably don’t watch the reserves and so are basing your opinion on a small amount of non-competitive football. At first i thought you were a wind up but that clearly not the case i just think you are incredibly deluded.

  • 143 Munster Mag // Dec 5, 2012 at 4:14 PM

Kets, dont know why u keep banging on about these guys – aint gonna happen. Too many playeres, too much oiutlay, to be fair to Ashley. IMO Simpson is a better defensive full back than Santon, who rarely gets close enough to his man in the box and is a reluctant tackler. Better wing back than full back, but given how poor his delivery is from the left, I would try him on the right more often, especially if a good left back became available, who could attack and defend.

  • 144 davis_toons // Dec 5, 2012 at 4:20 PM

Talking of Another player like Jones is Nicky Butt.
Yes, at his age during his times in StJames, he can play better football but during his time he played for us, he was being used for every match (like a work horse)until he broke down.
And worst there was no substitute for him and his performance straggler (The sub I can think of during that time was Alan Smith which was alone side him as well.)

On Simpson, even if AP have ask him to get forward, he cant do much upfront. Is better that we get someone who can attack just like Santon, it will be so much more watch-able.

If you have notice, Simpson was always asking for the ball but the most he can do was swing in a cross.
But I will not mind him to be on our bench not Purple.

  • 145 Nufc-83 // Dec 5, 2012 at 4:28 PM

Munster mag i dont think Simspon is better defensively at all. Simpsons positional sense is shocking and he backs so far off just watch the amount of room he gives the opposition. Santon gets close and gives the opposition winger a hard time. If he had a fault it would be that he gets caught upfield too often as sometimes we need our defenders to be back not bombing forward however he will pick that up as he becomes more experienced. Santon imo has been our best performer and most consistent this season by a mile. HBA is the only other who i would consider.

  • 146 davis_toons // Dec 5, 2012 at 4:33 PM

Jonas, does alot of defensive work and he dont have too much of an attacking threat, but if ask him to concentrate on attacking then our defence will surly expose.

AP wll have to work that out if he were to retire Jonas one day.

On Fergie – Kone (wigan forward) was a tough nut to deal with and Jonas basically have to help him out through the 2nd half. We can see Fergie is still not ready unlike Santon. (Or maybe he will never be ready)

  • 147 Super Magpie // Dec 5, 2012 at 4:34 PM

Reading through the comments from today. A few things to say.
People complaining we didn’t put more past Wigan. I’m sure we would have all liked to do that but after losing 4 games in a row we were not going to risk it. I do feel we backed off abit after the break when we should’ve get the 3rd to kill the game quickly so we could see it out then. Happy enough with the game and performance though.

    On Simpson,

His general defending is quite good, not great but good. He backs off far too much though which allows the winger to cross the ball. But his mean weakness ( as we all know) is his attacking abilities. He can’t cross, can’t beat a player, doesn’t run into space and just generally looks so uncomfortable when he dribbles.

I thank him for what he has done here but it is time for an upgrade. We need someone who is equally good at attacking and defending, not just one.

  • 148 Super Magpie // Dec 5, 2012 at 4:36 PM

    Main weakness*
Although speaking of averages that is exactly what he is.

  • 149 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Dec 5, 2012 at 4:37 PM

    Hi Guys,

On the Simmo / Santon discussion. I think they are currently fairly matched defensively, the difference is though Santon is improving, whereas Simmo has hit his level (well, I don ‘t see too much improvement, but a little rude to assume he wont get better). As for attacking there is no contest.

I don’t mind Simpson as I don’t expect too much from him. I think he is a fairly solid defensive RB and can pull off the occasional good deed (Like against Wigan and saved Willo & Colos backsides…if I remember correctly) and wouldn’t object to him being our back-up but that seems unlikely and fair enough to him. Upshot is, we do need to upgrade his position whether that’s getting a new RB or switching Santon over and getting in a LB. We want our style to change and this is an important part of that imo.

1 in a million for Owen, Rooney, Lmaps, G8,

I think you are right, not every player can step up to a very good quality, yes, they might have potential when they are young (competition among them they look stand out) but as they grow older, they just somehow does not turn out to be as good as we thought it would be.

Rio Ferdinand was a great example. His bro Anton does not even come close to him when playing.

  • 152 toonarmydownsouth // Dec 5, 2012 at 4:51 PM

    Ibiza
    Completely agree mate
Santon is only 21 and is playing his first full season in the league and has already improved massively defensively since joining us and looks better with every game
Simmo on the other hand looks to have peaked, reached his limit so to speak
We know what we’ve got with simmo he does his job adequately but he is probably the easiest position to improve and lets be honest it needs improving but the lad is a decent squad player but dont think he’d be happy on the bench and think its pretty clear he time on tyneside is nearly up

  • 153 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Dec 5, 2012 at 4:51 PM

Not sure if everyone has seen the EL squad for tomorrow, but supposedly these are the traveling players:

SQUAD: Krul, Elliot, Abeid, Amalfitano, Sammy Ameobi, Shola Ameobi, Anita, Bigirimana, Campbell, Cisse, Coloccini, Ferguson, Marveaux, Moyo, Newton, Perch, Ranger, Simpson, Tavernier, Williamson.

Be interesting to see who starts out of that lot. Campbell can’t still be injured, why would they take him? Just to make up numbers?

  • 154 Super Magpie // Dec 5, 2012 at 4:52 PM

    Jonas
Should not play LW for us. A Wingers priority should be to attack, not defend. Sadly, Jonas does more defending than attacking. It is greatly appreciated that he does this but he should be played in a DM position if that’s all he does.
He offers next to nothing offensively, which is why many get frustrated. It makes the team unbalanced too. Because we have one attacking full back and one who isn’t. Then we a winger who can go forward and one who can’t.

This evidently, is the squad that flew out for the match tomorrow :- Krul, Elliot, Simpson, Ferguson, Tavernier, Coloccini, Williamson, Perch, Anita, Bigirimana, Marveaux, Sammy Ameobi, Amalfitano, Abeid, Newton, Moyo, Cisse, Shola Ameobi, Campbell, Ranger.

Just hope he plays for a win rather than try and contain them playing not to lose!!!

My team- I don’t even know where Moyo and Newton play so I can’t put them in the team.

    Krul
    Tavernier Williamson Perch Fergie
    Bigi Anita Abeid
    Marv Shola Sammy

Subs- Elliot Colo Amal Ranger Cisse Moyo Newton ( assuming Campbell is fit then replace him with Moyo/Newton.)

That’s not exactly a strong team, but we need to keep players for Fulham. I’d expect to us lose with that team. Anything more would be a bonus.

No, I don’t iron my underwear, I do like things neat and tidy and of course I still kiss my mother, what sort of people are you? :P

Apparently this is the squad flying out to Bordeaux

Tim Krul, Rob Elliot | Danny Simpson, Shane Ferguson (21), James Tavernier (21), Fabricio Coloccini, Mike Williamson | James Perch, Vurnon Anita, Gael Bigirimana (19), Sylvain Marveaux, Sammy Ameobi (20), Romain Amalfitano, Mehdi Abeid (20), Connor Newton (21), Yven Moyo (20) | Papiss Cisse, Shola Ameobi, Adam Campbell (17), Nile Ranger (21).

    Not categorical but looks likely.

I’d rather of we a had another easyish tie in the last 32 and then get a bigger team in the last 16. Are there really any good ties for from the CL dropouts though? That’s ofc judging we finish 2nd.

  • 217 Super Magpie // Dec 5, 2012 at 6:29 PM

    CL dropouts:

    Dinamo Kiev
    Olympiakos
    Zenit
    Ajax
    Juventus- depending on tonight’s results.
    BATE
Celtic or Benfica ( Can we get Celtic if they drop out? )
    Cluj or Galatasaray

We definitely don’t want Dynamo Kiev, Zenit, Galatasaray or BATE
Ajax, Celtic and Juve would be Ok but we’d get beat by Ajax and Juve.

No, Chelsea will probably beat Nordsjaelland tonight meaning they will be on 10pts. This means Juventus have to get a point. If they do then they will go through on Head to Head record.

  • 234 Dannyo // Dec 5, 2012 at 7:00 PM

Have to say, i’m not too concerned about tomorrows result.
What pleases me is that players like Newton, Moyo, Campbell, Abeid, etc are all in the traveling squad.
Hopefully some of them gets some game time.

Not all, but alot. He has said he does not want not risk anyone for the Fulham game. I think he see’s that as a bigger priority than tomorrow hence the amount of young players taken over.

  • 238 Dannyo // Dec 5, 2012 at 7:06 PM

    @Tsunki
It’s the “weakest” traveling squad to date for EL game, so i think he’ll use fringes added with some youth, and subbing on youth mainly.
3 of these players has not even been on the bench this season.
Not saying that they’ll get on, but there’s still a good chance.

Lol not really we no we wont make the final so why not get some HHHUUUGGGEEE ties to play the truly great fixtures that have you buzzing for weeks on end during the build up rather than hoping we get the small teams at the ars3 end of europe in the hope we scrape through another round?

    Ian toon
Those are the european nights we all remember so fondly and why im so happy we are back in europe isnt that what part of football as a fan is all about? Going to some of the biggest teams in club football as the underdogs?
One of my fondest memories was seeing shola score at the nou camp in the only european away match i was privelaged enough to go to!!

  • 240 Tsunki // Dec 5, 2012 at 7:17 PM

tads just yankin’ the chains again, I know what you mean and yes I would rather get Juve next than bow out on an away goal to Cluj. I also think we would get further if we just happened to beat them but…oh whats that noise, oh dear, its Reality knocking on the door.

I would really like to see Campbell get a full half in place of Ranger, wouldnt it be great if he did a Krul and sprang a nice performance in a euro game? What word did Tim keep saying after his european debut match was it ‘fantastic’ or ‘amazing’ I cant remember lol. I will see if its on youtube….

  • 244 jimmysmith // Dec 5, 2012 at 7:31 PM

Newcastle is a wonderful club and I’m sure the players love to pull on the shirt and run out at St James’ to be greeted by that spine tingling roar, but at the end of the day it is gonna be about the money.

Players come for the money and opportunity and leave for greener pastures or are discarded.

So long as we pay average premiership wages, we’ll rarely if ever put together the top side we crave, much less be able to hold it together for very long, Witness Ba now, Enrique before, etc. Would Colo be here without the huge salary? Will we be able to hold onto all of HBA, Cabaye, Santon, Tiote when it’s time to renegotiate. It’s a problem and I suggest it’s the thinking behind the 11 purples nonsense, re. 11 top salaries only and those not beyond are certain figure significantly less than the most senior clubs.

Fair play rules may help, but market forces left to there own devices will always leave us in the wash of the big spenders.

  • 245 Dannyo // Dec 5, 2012 at 7:31 PM

We’re punching above our weight. We’re 13th in the wage league and finished 5th.

  • 248 Tsunki // Dec 5, 2012 at 7:36 PM

Maybe Reality has taken Pards to one side and given him the low on wasting his resources on a competition that cant be any more significant than an elite reserves outing. If thats the case, then maybe the young lads will indeed be cannon fodder to spare our potential subs at Fulham. I hope so.

Jamsha- is that because you went into your options and selected ‘use desktop version’ ? :)

  • 250 jimmysmith // Dec 5, 2012 at 7:44 PM

I’m suggesting a team that is 13th in the wage league will rarely finish 5th or hold together a side once it has.

I also think 5th is punching at our weight and 13th paying below our weight. I doubt it’s sustainable. Mike obviously disagrees, though.

  • 251 Ian Toon // Dec 5, 2012 at 7:44 PM

jimmy – that’s why we’re intent on grass root development with a manager on an 8 year contract to provide stability. Abramovich changed the football economics for Arsenal and were following their blueprint. We can’t compete financially with Chelsea, Man City Man Utd fact of football life.

Your looking at a plan in it’s formative years. We’re ahead of target in that we finished 5th last season. If we achieve self sufficiency and produce home bred and developed players the so called purple breed will be replaced without transfer purchases. Arsenal have lost. Key players consistently over the last 6 (!) years and bought better replacements. It requires being knowledgeable of the transfer market
which is why Graham Carr is on board. Arsenal’s fall from grace in terms of winning things is down to the impact Chelsea and Man City in particular have had in changing the financial dynamics.

Elliot, tavernier, ferguson, colo, perch, bigirimana, anita amalifitano, marveaux, campbell, shola

I think amalifitano deserves a run out in the first eleven, sammy has had a few goes lets give amalifitano a chance from the start.

  • 260 Dannyo // Dec 5, 2012 at 8:01 PM

    @Ian Toon
    So, so, so true.
It takes years for a manager to put his stamp on things.

  • 261 Tsunki // Dec 5, 2012 at 8:08 PM

…seriously though, when we were talking about amongst other things the scouting policy & the academy revamp some time ago I remember saying that I thought the EL would be a great tester for our breakthrough players, and so it seems it has been. When you consider some of the young and marginal players who have had to step into the breech in the PL because of injuries etc, I think the small but significant contribution they have made in the european games has fared them well. If Pardew trusts these games to the young lads and they continue on a good run, there will be no failure when we drop it, the experience these lads have gained from it has been worthwhile, they would never have experienced this level of competitive football so soon otherwise. It bodes well for the future imo.

We just need to ensure our first team wins a cup or gets a league placing so we can continue to do this year on year, who knows we may be ready for CL in a couple of years.

  • 262 Dannyo // Dec 5, 2012 at 8:21 PM

    My guess on tomorrows team:

    Elliott
    Tav – Collo – Perch – Fergy
    Abeid – Biggie
    Amalfitano – Marveux – Sammy
    Shola

Subs: Krul, Newton, Moyo, Willo, Cisse, Anita, Ranger.

Am i too far off here you think? AP said he wanted a young side and rest allot of players.

Anyway, I know people have been discussing this, so what would be your favourite draw for Newcastle in the next round of Europa. I’m not sure who will be in it, but I think Ajax or Juve would be decent. Ajax would be my favourite as its easiest to get too. I hope we avoid the east European teams.

  • 266 Tsunki // Dec 5, 2012 at 8:36 PM

  • 273 mackas7 // Dec 5, 2012 at 8:51 PM

Well dembas contract was discussed, obviously they’ve said they are trying to do everything they can, they did say he loves it here and the fans are a big part of that, said he’s, settled, a question was asked from a fan who had friends who were marseilles and they’d asked how have we managed to get so much out of Ben Arfa saying they thought he looked a lost cause, again they said this was down largley to the fans backing, saying when he picks the ball up it’s a positive reception from the stands, also when he got the injury Ashley travelled to see him and that’s the first time he has done so for a player, he mentioned in the same answer about Obertan and that he stresses that we get behind him, as when he gets the ball it’s ‘sigh’ from the fans and that has a big effect.

More about demba and the formation, was asked why when we played some of our best football using 4-3-3 have we switched, response was last season demba was asked to do a job on the left and track back more, which he was unhappy about, said I’m looking to utilise my players as much as I can.

  • 277 Tsunki // Dec 5, 2012 at 9:00 PM

mackas7 – its that last comment about obertan that hits home for me. The lad has not done anything particularly wrong, and has had a few relatively unheralded good games. Expecting him to light up the wing from the word go has made a lot of fans turn him into a scapegoat for all the teams right hand inefficiencies which is a shame. I have a seat in the gallowgate and the sighing is embarrassingly audible and he is picked up with any wrong footed move. Mind you, some of this I lay at Pardew’s door for not playing him inside a little, he’s obviously no winger, but when he’s played behind the striker he perks up a lot.

  • 280 Tsunki // Dec 5, 2012 at 9:02 PM

So the unhappy Ba thing is no myth! Hmmm….questions questions – Catchy where are you?

  • 281 willowdalerez // Dec 5, 2012 at 9:03 PM

@iantoon – You may be right about the long term plan but I’m not that keen on Pards (I was very much against dropping Hughton and never understood why he was axed). Last year was a welcome suprise but he had plenty of time left on his 5 1/2 year deal and it may have been a blip… We are not surging this year. Only time will tell if he’s the right man.

In any event we can’t continually punch above our weight if we aren’t willing to spend more on salaries. Homegrown may be great 5 years from now but won’t help wrt to hanging onto our spot in Europe! We need a few acquisitions this trasnfer window or to lock down what we’ve got!

willowdalerez– Whether your keen on Pardew or not is irrelevant as to whether he’s a good manager. I am not Ferguson’s biggest fan but he’s an excellent manager. It can’t have been a blip last season because we finished 5th much higher than the season before. You could make a case for it being a blip this season. Though it’s a long season. I fully expect acquisitions in the window.

  • 292 puretoon // Dec 5, 2012 at 10:22 PM

Personally if I never saw Simmo again it would be too soon! I can’t stand him at all. He’s a below average rb with a hell of an ego and pure greed to boot. It’s with AP playing him week in week out that’s done this. Given simmo a hell of a high opinion of himself. He’s saying he wants to stay but won’t sign a contract? that’s ruddy contradictory in itself. GO PLEASE JUST GO!!!!!!
We don’t read the page in the local paper now if he’s on it as neither of us can stand him.
AP should keep trying Tav there and give the young lad a chance.

looks like we might get linked with Lucas Digne from lille

  • 294 jimmysmith // Dec 5, 2012 at 10:59 PM

In my view, the 5 year plan with its youth development program, measured wage structure and prudent transfer policy is very commendable. No criticism there at all. But I also suggest that it is unlikely to be enough to have us competing consistently among the top 6 in such a lucrative, competitive league, even taking into consideration rules to be introduced to counter financial doping, and Newcastle with all that it has going for it, really should be consistently challenging the senior clubs.

  • 295 jimmysmith // Dec 5, 2012 at 11:11 PM

My specific observation is that wage structure is too measured and the transfer policy too prudent to allow us to punch at our natural weight. Perhaps it only needs tweaking, but it doesn’t seem adequate 5 year plan or otherwise.

  • 296 jimmysmith // Dec 5, 2012 at 11:25 PM

Final point. Maybe Mike Ashley will sanction a loosening of the wages structure and transfer policy as our financial position strengthens further. But I can’t read his mind, I can only judge his strategy from past actions and it seems to me that if he thinks he can get away with not spending a pound, then he won’t, and I see that as the weakness in his approach to the running of the club.

  • 297 Paul Scharner // Dec 5, 2012 at 11:34 PM

Hello, is it me you’re looking for?

  • 298 Ian Toon // Dec 6, 2012 at 12:01 AM

Jimmy- I have an early start in the morning but following your further numerous posts let me briefly summarise further my thoughts. Your perceived reservations on the way the club is being run is understood.
Undoubtedly, Ashley adopts an autocratic approach towards the running of the football club and he can make changes as he sees fit
On the 5 year plan as in any medium term planning it is subject to an annual adjustment of assumptions and variables. You only need to consider the PL today with say 5 years ago to appreciate that there will be changes going forward. Next year income from television will be massively increased and of course the impact of Financial Fair play has yet to be fully considered. Cash flow is subject to the team’s on- going level of success as well as future sales/ purchases of players which are variables. If all your really saying is that you wish Ashley didn’t own the football club because you don’t know what he can be relied upon to do I would understand your point of view. Good night.

  • 299 Ian Toon // Dec 6, 2012 at 12:08 AM

Jimmy- Don’t worry. Just think of us buying 2 defenders in the window+ HBA, Cabaye, Anita, Tiote and Marvaeux all in the same team. Mouth watering.

  • 300 RonVanDam // Dec 6, 2012 at 12:13 AM

I dont know why we arent going after Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa or River plates Germán Pezzella.
Germán Pezzella reads the game very well, a younder (21) version of collo. in 5 years time you’ll hearing alot about this guys. Potential to be the very best defender in the world. Will compliment Santon when the old guards leave the club.

  • 301 jimmysmith // Dec 6, 2012 at 12:18 AM

Ian, I’m essentially saying at present he appears to be erring on the side of fiscal caution if the goal is fulfilling our undoubted potential. But your points are duly noted, but it doesn’t necessarily follow that Ashley will ultimately do as you hope.

I’m not anti Ashley, I’d rather have him than not, but I am perplexed as to why such a wealthy man would want to be so tight with the purse strings with an institution such as Newcastle But hey, I recognise you may well be right and I hope you are.

    Morning lads!

…for me the most important thing is to build on Monday night’s performance and win. We need to keep the momentum going cause that’ll be half the win next Monday.

Pardew need to stop playing two different teams. We need continuity to prosper and that’s what we have been lacking all season (that and bad tactics)

Jesper – Good morning . It’s about time we won away in the PL. Monday would be a good time to start. From the players that travelled
Pardew is going to ring the changes. I would think that Campbell is going just for the experience. Enjoy your day.

Ian…I am all for given everyone a chance to shine, but at the moment I would play more or less the same team as on Monday, but with only a few changes :)

…the core should be the same.

I would probably not start with Ranger, but I guess it all depends on who is fit or not; I would probably push Sammy forward and use a 4-3-3 template (still not sure what formation Pards used last time around, but it worked :))
