Newcastle Watching Senegal International Winger

1:07 am, Wednesday, December 5th, 2012 by Ed Harrison · 9 Comments

The Daily Mail is reporting that Newcastle, Norwich and Aston Villa will have scouts at the game on Wednesday night to watch 27 year-old winger Modou Sougou of FC Cluj, when Manchester United entertain the Romanian club.

Modou Sougou – winger plays for Romanian club FC Cluj

The Senegal winger – who has 11 caps for his country – impressed against the Red Devils in October, and had another good game when he scored against Galatasaray last month.

Swansea and Bolton are also said to be clubs watching the Senegal international, and the player is said to be available for around £2M and wants to leave Romania in January.

That’s money Newcastle can afford to pay, although the player will turn 28 in two weeks time, and 28 is a bit old for new players coming to Tyneside these days.

Sougou has a Portuguese passport, and that’s after playing for Portuguese clubs União Leiria, Vitória Setúbal, União Leiria and Académica in Portugal from 2004, until he joined FC Cluj last year.

That will enable the player to easily get a work permit, and that would help his move to an English Premier League side.

The report is that Newcastle are watching the player, but we don’t know how good this lad is, since we’ve never seen him play.

What do you think?

had to do that once now never again lol..Anyhow ill keep my eye on the lad tomorrow but wouldnt mind an upgrade on the wing we dont have a truely fast winger besides Obertan and his brain doesnt allow him to use his speed we need a more direct pacy winger as opposed to the dribblers that we have

28 years old in two weeks and possible chance of going to ACON, yeah right. We have plenty of wingers but this guy does not even fit the blueprint. I hope we dont end up signing more players for positions that we have plenty of cover in and miss out on defenders. We need to be looking at signing two defensive players and a backup striker different to the two we have already. You add a composed ball playing full back and a partner for colo then with the form marveaux and anita showed on monday night we could possess a very good first eleven if pards can get the best out of them.

Hate to be a pessimist but that 3:0 just glossed over the cracks temporarily. Points over performance any day of the week dont get me wrong, i just feel it was very flat against ten min in the second half and i overheard many others saying it should have felt better to leave after winning 3:0 or it didnt even feel like a win it was that flat. Positive was anita coming for the ball and marveaux showing what he can do. Imagine if we had benny cabaye and marveaux in the team. Ba and Cisse did link up better but Cisse straying offside was annoying. Kruls distribution needs working on as does williamsons profession. Tricky games lie ahead now keep grafting lads and don’t make it easy for teams like we did against stoke.

Just one of a few options on the shortlist, I’m sure. Would rather see a non-African player who’s a little younger. How about one of those Dutch wingers we’ve targeted?

What a totally ridiculous story. How on earth would the Daily Mail know which games (if any) we were planning to send scouts to? The only people who would be privy to that information would be the scouts themselves (and maybe the manager) and what possible reason would those people have for leaking that information to the press? And how likely is it that the staff at 3 different premier league clubs would be giving the same sort of information to the same newspaper? It totally lacks any credibility whatsoever..

I know that Ed feels the need to write an article about everything that’s ever reported about the Toon, but I really think he should draw the line at stories like this.

We need to stop signing Players who we will be losing for significant periods during tournaments in other lands after the Christmas Hols!

Concentrate on getting BA to sign a new contract without any dumb and pointless release clauses! His dodgy knee is,nt stopping him banging goals in, and if this problem is,nt solved in the next few weeks he will be off !

If Cluj pull off a win against ManU tomorrow they have a chance to make UEFA knockout round and even if they lose are guaranteed Europa after X-Mas… haven’t watched him but if he’s worth scouting he must be key to their squad so why whoud Cluj let him NOW and why would he want out NOW? Doesn’t make any sense!

Sidenote – Senegal disqualified from ACON 2013 so no issue there.
