Newcastle Make Nine Changes – Abeid, Amoebi Brothers Start

4:49 pm, Thursday, December 6th, 2012 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 225 Comments

Alan Pardew has made nine changes to the Newcastle starting line-up for tonight’s Europa League Group D tie at Bordeaux.

Mike Williamson and Sylvain Marveaux ate the only players starting tonight who played in Monday night’s great 3-0 win against Wigan.

Youngsters James Tavernier, Shane Ferguson, Gael Bigirimana, Sammy Ameobi, Mehdi Abeid and Nile Ranger all start tonight – and 17 year-old Adam Campbell is on the bench.

Newcastle will play in a 4-2-3-1 formation with Shola up front, and with Nile Ranger, Sylvain Marveaux and Sammy Ameobi backing up Shola, and of course Mehdi Abeid and Gael Bigirimana in central midfield.

Both teams have already qualified for the last 32 – but we expect Newcastle to try to get another win in this game.

    Kets will be happy.

This is actually quite a good team

Tav getting to play on his strong right foot and Fergy and Marveux getting some more game time

Hope Ranger takes his last chance and puts a shift in

  • 3 MacToon // Dec 6, 2012 at 4:54 PM

Basically our “reserve” team, hope we do well. I don’t think finishing top will make too much difference as there are so many good teams left in this competition, luck of the draw.

That looks like a team that could do the Biz – a 2-1 win for the Mighty Mag’s

Marv playing here could mean pards doesn’t plan to start him on Monday. Terrible decision if that’s the case.

  • 15 toonking // Dec 6, 2012 at 5:07 PM

has jonas suffered an injury because unless he has i can’t see any reason for marvo starting ahead of him
and i know for sure jonas does not deserve to be in the startting 11 premier league games.
when a professional football player malcolm macdonald gets annoyed with him starting them you don’t need to go any further as that proves jonas is not good enough for the starting 11

  • 16 Indian Magpie // Dec 6, 2012 at 5:08 PM

    Jona has not even travelled

  • 17 Indian Magpie // Dec 6, 2012 at 5:09 PM

  • 18 alanrichie // Dec 6, 2012 at 5:10 PM

Think marvaux will be in the centre of the 3 like!

Shola up top and sammy and ranger swapping side

  • 19 BelfastMagpie // Dec 6, 2012 at 5:10 PM

If Jonas starts over Marveaux on Monday, its a joke.

  • 20 AMEOBI // Dec 6, 2012 at 5:12 PM

Great team gutted that its Marveaux and not Jonas! Marveaux has got to play on Monday night seriously

  • 21 toonking // Dec 6, 2012 at 5:12 PM

i agree belfast it probably proves a point as to why so many get on pardews back

  • 22 toonking // Dec 6, 2012 at 5:15 PM

if marvo start tonight is not bad enough i found this on sky sports web
    http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11678/8308820/Midfielder-Sylvain-Marveaux-wants-to-play-more-regularly-for-Newcastle-United
now to me this is marvo warning the club that if they don’t start playing him over the likes of jonas then he is away

  • 23 Ketsbaia9 // Dec 6, 2012 at 5:17 PM

It’s about time Abeid got a start. Can’t believe Williamson’s playing again. Ferguson is not a left back. Tavernier is very poor. Shola isn’t good enough and I’m not sure about Sammi yet. Hopefully James Perch will have a good game tonight. It’s crucial that he starts ahead of Williamson for the next match. Looking forward to seeing Marveaux.

  • 24 Rotonda heights // Dec 6, 2012 at 5:18 PM

    83

That’s what worries me. We find a system 433 or a variation of it, Marveaux has a stormer but in pardew’s mind he will only risk one flair player in Benny instead of having 2 creators.

ian toon says pardew has no favourites but beg to differ on Guti.

  • 25 toonicle // Dec 6, 2012 at 5:19 PM

Good squad. Interested to see what Ranger can do.

  • 26 santonthenewmaldini // Dec 6, 2012 at 5:25 PM

I think what is happning is Pardew wants to see how Marveux does 2 games in a row you just have to look at Anita he has played lots of league and Europa back to back now and can now be trusted

If Marveux does not play well tonight and does not try he will be on the bench Monday but if he applies himself and we beat Bordeuax he may just get the nod a bit like how he eased Arfa into the team but also got him working hard and to be fair he has made Arfa a much better player

The jury is still out for me on Tav, Abeid, Sammy….AND Shola !!

Lets hope i am proved wrong though!

  • 27 t00ntime // Dec 6, 2012 at 5:25 PM

The only ba thing is, this pretty much says that marv wont be playing on monday :(

    I was hoping for a
    Hba–cisse–marv
    ——–ba———

    But guess it might be
    Cisse—hba—jonas
    ———-ba———-

If we do play jonas there it wud be really stupid cause he cannot attack at all imo

  • 28 BelfastMagpie // Dec 6, 2012 at 5:27 PM

Not a favourite Rotonda, I think he must be shagging him lol

  • 29 toonbrother // Dec 6, 2012 at 5:27 PM

SILLY to risk marveaux in a meaningless game. even if he comes through unscathed – and thats a big IF – he’ll be too drained to give his best on Monday. Why not play amalfitano for a change

  • 30 t00ntime // Dec 6, 2012 at 5:28 PM

O btw jonas is injured thats why he didnt travel ;-)
I think Pardew said ba, jonas, tiote, hba all will be fit again on monday (so i assume they are all injured atm)

  • 31 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Dec 6, 2012 at 5:28 PM

    Sanronthenewmaldini

I don’t think Shola will be too bothered about you still having the jury out on him, at 31 I don’t think he will feel he has too much more time to sway those that are still on the fence (Ibiza)

I wouldn’t be second guessing Pards, Marveaux just needs to make a statement of intent and ensure that Pards cannot overlook him. A good performance tonight could make sure of that.

Kets the pressure is on tonight, if Abeid doesn’t do the business you could be in for some flack :P

  • 32 blew // Dec 6, 2012 at 5:29 PM

I hope Marveaux is in to get playing time in readiness for a start on Monday, instead of Jonas.
We will see some pace in the side tonight and I am optimistic.

  • 33 tdt // Dec 6, 2012 at 5:29 PM

    @27

    well could still have

    Hba–cisse–marv
    ——–ba———

on Monday if we sub marv for Amalfitano after 65mins tonight.

  • 34 geordie157 // Dec 6, 2012 at 5:30 PM

without sounding too picky, i was hoping Conor Newton would feature tonight. Colo could have stayed at home with a cup of coco

  • 35 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Dec 6, 2012 at 5:31 PM

Why are people assuming that just because Marv is starting tonight that Jonas is certainly starting on Monday, I was unaware that you had a personal hotline into the inner workings of our manager’s mind.

  • 36 santonthenewmaldini // Dec 6, 2012 at 5:32 PM

Phew! Was getting worried there! :P

  • 38 t00ntime // Dec 6, 2012 at 5:34 PM

@tdt forgot amal lol. Hopefully marv plays a great 60/65mins an then gets taken off. Then it will be impossible to look over him, surely.

  • 39 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Dec 6, 2012 at 5:36 PM

I wouldn’t discount Jonas just yet, how does one good performance mean that Pardew has to start him in the PL? Surely everything that Jonas has done for us, and must still be doing in training, still warrants a place in the side?

Marv was fantastic against Wigan but it was just one game.

  • 40 toonicle // Dec 6, 2012 at 5:38 PM

Once Ben Arfa is back i’d love to see him and Marv both starting in midfield, something like this.

    Tiote—Anita
    Marv–Ben Arfa–Obertan
    Cisse/Ba

  • 41 Pardews Perfect Battleplan // Dec 6, 2012 at 5:39 PM

well kets is gonna be a happy little boy. will be interesting looking at our fringe and young players.
agree that marveaux needs more time but he cant just be thrust straight into the first team on one performance.

  • 42 nufc_eire // Dec 6, 2012 at 5:42 PM

I’d like to see romain come in for marveaux and campbell come on for ranger after 60mins

  • 43 YorkshiresFinestGeordie // Dec 6, 2012 at 5:43 PM

RANGER? is he having a laugh, dont know how he even gets a shout in with the way hes been acting, horrible lad. Campbell deserves it more if you ask me.

  • 44 JAMSHA // Dec 6, 2012 at 5:44 PM

  • 45 Thump // Dec 6, 2012 at 5:45 PM

@YorkshiresFinestGeordie (42): I’m sure Campbell would love to play if he wasn’t so injured.

  • 46 Thump // Dec 6, 2012 at 5:46 PM

Come to think of it, when was Campbell back in training? It mustn’t have been too long, surely? Hope he sees some game time either way.

  • 47 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Dec 6, 2012 at 5:47 PM

    YSG

Well he has said that Ranger has got his head down for the last 2 months and that he’s been putting the work in on the training ground and given that Campbell has only just come back from a pretty serious injury and that this game counts for little, it would make more sense to put Ranger in if you ask me.

  • 48 santonthenewmaldini // Dec 6, 2012 at 5:51 PM

    @Ruddy

I love what Jonas has done for us over the years and the effort he has put in but his end product has been terrible for ages and now he does not put as much graft into his performances either

Although i do think there are benefits to him playing he seems to get the rest of the team up for it it might be that he is carrying an injury like Cabaye was?

But i can also see why everyone wants Marveux to get a shot we know what Jonas offers and unfortunately so do other teams which means they know he wont produce the goods which means teams can double up on Santon and Arfa and nullify us a little Jonas and Simpson are weak on either flank

A team with Arfa and Marveux running at you all night and skipping past 3 and 4 players while creating chances for Ba and Cisse is something that i want to see for a few games in a row

Can always bring on Jonas to close a game out or move him to Defensive mid when Tiote gets suspended after the fulham game

  • 49 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Dec 6, 2012 at 5:56 PM

    Santonthenewmaldini

I just don’t want people getting too hyped up about Marveaux purely based on one performance, if anything I think it is a great thing that he has started tonight in a game where he only has to concentrate on putting in a great performance, and if he does that then he can really clip at Jonas’ heels to get into the PL XI, which could only either make Jonas up his game or force Pardew’s hand and put Marv into his Prem XI

But until Marv consistently puts in good solid performances then I still think Jonas is a good shout for his effort alone, the man has been a machine for us.

I too want to see the exact scenario you described but I still think we cannot toss out the players who have served us so well for so long.

  • 50 Tsunki // Dec 6, 2012 at 5:57 PM

Can’t see how playing tonight means not playing at fulham. We don’t have the luxury of a full alternative 11 to hand.

Ketsy – Its xmas alright, Marveaux AND Abeid? Tissues at the ready, fingers steady…..

  • 75 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Dec 6, 2012 at 6:37 PM

So much careless play. Sammy wasting every chance he gets to whip a ball in, Marveaux’s touch has been very loose. Playing like it doesn’t matter, but it should to this set of players trying to prove they’re good enough to dislodge others!

  • 76 Zero // Dec 6, 2012 at 6:38 PM

i agree abeid is a very very average player! can’t believe some fans on here who think he’ll be great..
also williamson is soooo poor always long balls.
marveaux also will never be a 1st team player.
on the positive side, ranger actually looks threatening especially for having not played a single competitive game

  • 78 Big Pappa Cissé // Dec 6, 2012 at 6:40 PM

I wonder if Williamson is going to change his name Captain hoof. He has aimlessley blazed at least 7 balls up field and on all but one occasion we have lost possession.

  • 79 check the toastie // Dec 6, 2012 at 6:40 PM

Wow, not many making a big claim for a 1st team shirt here, Fergy decent, personally think Tav has got it and should be given a chance, after that mmmmmmmmmm.

Dont know whats happened to Sammy, though he had real potential but seems to have gone backwards, still time like but concerned.

We couldnt get any worse, good goal by them like, have some nice ball players. when we play a continental team Willo sticks out like a sore thumb for being such a donkey.

  • 80 Zero // Dec 6, 2012 at 6:40 PM

    NU Shot On/Off Target – 0/1
    BOD – 2/3

Its the nors if we win then it could have mislead lots of fans.
Its just like winning MAN UTD on consistance basis.

The group of players just could not hold on to the ball for 5 mins. Or some might say could not thread 4 passes together. Thats how it is.

Maybe a RED CARD could help?

  • 103 Transfer Sage // Dec 6, 2012 at 6:54 PM

Marvoux is a very good player. Showed that in the Wigan game.

He is a technical player, like Anita. Doesn’t look as good when players around him don’t move. They play a pass and move game and can’t do that with the others lads on the pitch.

Abeid is a decent player but needs a full season on loan to get experience. Same for sammy as he has no end product or vision yet. Needs proper games in the championship really.

Ranger is doing ok but he has never been great for is. Rather seen Campbell tonight. Looks 10x the player of ranger when I’ve seen them in the reserves.

Amamlfitano for Marveaux would be my move, I don’t think Marv has the motivation to perform in a game like this, particularly after his exploits against Wigan, I think in his mind he’s a first-teamer who should have his feet up with the others, prepping for Fulham.

  • 105 santonthenewmaldini // Dec 6, 2012 at 6:55 PM

Well from the 1st half what can you say??

Elliot is pulling off some top class saves

Tavernier keeps getting caught out and then giving it back to williamson when he is in trouble who then hoofs it which causes us to lose possession

Sammy and Shola have been shocking Ferguson is not a left back he should be on the wing as he would put quality into the box but we dont have a left back we need to sort this out in the window

Abeid is not that good either and Marveux has been poor….Was praising him about an hour ago!!!!although the ball has been in the air a lot typical after last week we would go back to route one which does not suit our players especially marv

Bigi has been good and Ranger has looked good though i will say forgot how quick he is should put him up fromt get shola and sammy off and get Romain and Anita on!!!

A bit disappointed to say the least think we have been playing negatively but i think a lot of it has to do with nerves by the youngsters and the senior pros not really stepping up to the plate!

Think a fair few of the squad will be going out on loan in January

  • 106 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Dec 6, 2012 at 6:56 PM

Abeid’s done ok breaking up play, aside from that, not much else.

  • 107 Slank // Dec 6, 2012 at 6:57 PM

    Poor first half.

Impressed with Elliot. Has always looked good whenever I have seen him. Ranger has done well and is working hard. I give up with Sammy. He nearly always loses the ball. I like how Tavernia always tries to get forward quickly. How many times is Fergie going to be knocked off the ball all too easily. He isn’t a fullback.

Hope we can manage a shot in the second half.

  • 108 davis_toons // Dec 6, 2012 at 6:57 PM

Are the players just having a good time during training? Where is the training for PASSING?

  • 109 gringo burt // Dec 6, 2012 at 6:58 PM

i know this is a second string team but what are we teaching down our training ground, people are getting paid for f@@k all down there, utter dross!!!!

  • 110 9 // Dec 6, 2012 at 6:58 PM

Watching on TV and really enjoying it, as it’s a chance to see some players I don’t normally see. Very disappointed in Marveaux tonight, so far; Elliot looks great every time I see him; I think all our players are showing very good ball skills, as are the opponents, so this is enjoyable, but our final pass (Sammy?) is woeful.

  • 111 BSoerheim // Dec 6, 2012 at 6:58 PM

I must agree, they`re lacking fighting spirit. The whole team is static.
But give them a break, let’em have another 45mins.
These players need more experience, this is a way to get it.

  • 112 Zero // Dec 6, 2012 at 6:59 PM

wheres the training for crossing, free kicks or basic backtracking and marking a moving target

  • 113 bambams // Dec 6, 2012 at 6:59 PM

Well i suppose there is nothing to really play for. It would have been good to have won the group with cl teams dropping in for their second bite at europe.
Just dont want any injuries. Been impressed by the keeper.
We may attack a little more in the second half. In fact just by running onto the pitch will be an improvement

  • 114 Big Pappa Cissé // Dec 6, 2012 at 7:01 PM

Told you Anita would come on

  • 115 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Dec 6, 2012 at 7:05 PM

Well Anita is on, hope he conduct proceedings and helps establish a good tempo, like we now know he can.

  • 116 archaeomag // Dec 6, 2012 at 7:06 PM

Fergeson is not a left back, its tough on him having to play there.

  • 117 jonny-intense // Dec 6, 2012 at 7:07 PM

I’ve always liked the look of Ranger and thought it a shame that he couldn’t apply himself. I remember being in awe of him in the Gallowgate at the infamous 4-4 a couple of seasons ago. If he can get back to those days and progress we’ll be able to add a different dimension to our attack.

Now I’m just hoping we come up with something a bit more productive in this second half!

  • 118 Transfer Sage // Dec 6, 2012 at 7:09 PM

Ferguson is a left back….it’s where he has always played for us from a young age.

The problem is he just can’t do it at this level. Maybe as a under 18 but not now. Much better as a winger. It’s where he plays for N.I.

  • 119 Big Pappa Cissé // Dec 6, 2012 at 7:09 PM

My god Shola even has lazy finishing. Should have scored IMO

  • 120 jonny-intense // Dec 6, 2012 at 7:09 PM

I thought he did ok on his weaker foot to be honest. At least we’ve tested the keeper!

  • 121 nufcursed // Dec 6, 2012 at 7:10 PM

    @ transfer sage

for a technical player marveaux can’t pass! also loses a lot of possession…
to me he’s not a team player.
he’s one of those lads who thinks he’s a lot better than he actually is!
i actually thinks he’s quite poor technically.
no vision, no simple passes that reach a teammate.
sure he’s better technically than williamson but he’s nothing special

  • 122 jonny-intense // Dec 6, 2012 at 7:10 PM

    This is better…come on lads!

  • 123 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Dec 6, 2012 at 7:11 PM

  • 124 jonny-intense // Dec 6, 2012 at 7:13 PM

    @ Ruddy

Aye, every now and then you just think “F*ck me! Where did that come from?!”

He does a job though. He’s excellent at holding it up I just wish he wouldn’t try and dribble all the time. Yet again, I’ve seen him skin a few in my time as well lol

Shola is back to his depressing best, utter garbage.

Ranger is a miles better option than Shola, shame he cant be trusted as he would be an automatic for me with a run of games.

Sammy has lost the plot, dont know wot has happened to the kid,

It was a rubber game but we didn’t play terrible in the second half. Bordeaux were very disciplined at the back unlike us. The midfield battle was even. They have more pace against an undisciplined defence. Fergie wasn’t great at keeping up with his man. Willo didn’t hold the line ( but I’m not ill wishing him like some of you)

Ranger could be a better partner for our poachers. Anita should allow us to bring the mid into attacks more in future.

Ignoring Marveaux, Anita and Bigi, the only second strings that could make the first team were Elliot and Ranger. Pardew needs to persevere with Ranger as he has power and pace.

Players who are not there (yet or ever) are Abeid, Sammy, Fergie and Tavernia.

I am not looking forward to Monday night as much as the Wigan game was an improvement, we got lucky with the early pen and red. We will probably need another slice of luck on Monday. Altho HBA is back, right?

I always thought us Geordies were fair minded knowledgable football fans that were 100% behind the team. But reading this blog I think I was wrong what a bunch of whingeing parts who know not about football. But then again maybe the people on here aren’t Geordies

Whens the draw for the next round?

  • 225 joeytoon // Dec 6, 2012 at 9:20 PM

so explain to me how europe is killing us
will demba hba, simpson, krul, tiote, jonas, collo, cisse ,santon, all be tired for monday?
most of whom didnt even travel
colo coming on with 20 mins to go in a meaningless game that we clearly were not going to win was daft enough ,but we bring on cisse for 10 minutes 2-0 down?? and risk losing two more players in an already depleted squad ,most injuries and suspensions have happened in the pl
if any player is still tired 4 days after a comparitively short hop across the channel they should go and see a doctor
    has pards completely lost it??
