Newcastle In Unseeded Group For Europa League Draw

1:41 am, Friday, December 7th, 2012 by Ed Harrison · 12 Comments

Because Newcastle finished only second in their group in the Europa league after being easily beaten 2-0 at Bordeaux last night, we go into the draw for the next round – the round of the last 32 as an unseeded side.

Liverpool surprisingly won Group A, by winning 1-0 at Udinese and squeezed through with three teams in their group on 10 points, and Tottenham finished second in Group J – again on 10 points, one more than Newcastle got in their Group D, by beating Panathinaikos 3-1 at White Hart Lane.

The seeded teams are as follows and include Chelsea who dropped down from the Champions league after only finishing 3rd in their group.

SEEDED – Liverpool, Viktoria Plzen, Fenerbahce, Bordeaux, Steaua Bucuresti, Dnipro, Genk, Rubin Kazan, Lyon, Lazio, Metalist Kharkiv, Hannover, Chelsea, CFR Cluj, Olympiakos, Benfica

And the unseeded teams are:

UNSEEDED – Anzhi Makhachkala, Atletico Madrid, Borussia Monchengladbach, Newcastle United, VfB Stuttgart, Napoli, FC Basel, Inter Milan, Sparta Prague, Tottenham Hotspur, Bayer Leverkusen, Levante, Zenit St Petersburg, BATE Borisov, Dynamo Kiev, Ajax Amsterdam

The draw takes place at 14.00 GMT on Thursday, December 20, and none of the teams from the same national association can be drawn together in this round – but can from the round of the last 16 – and basically a team form the seeded group is drawn against a team from the unseeded group.

The seeded teams will be at home in the second leg, and on December 20th at 14:00 GMT, and both the Rounds of the last 32 and the Round of the last 16 will be drawn.

The dates for the next two rounds are as follows:

Round of 32: February 14 and 21

Round of 16: March 7 and 14

If Newcastle can get through these two ties – we are in the quarter finals.

No mate, we’ll play a team from the seeded group except for Chelsea or Liverpool.

Both seeded and unseeded groups have strength and weaknesses, it’s going to be down to the luck of the draw.

Tbh there’s no-one in the seeds we should fear, I’d reckon the seeded teams are more worried

HA!! Wor lass is gutted as I had promised her that if the TOON win the group our next game will be on Valentines Day and whichever team we drew I would take her with me for a little romantic trip, plus the match of course however much to her dismay wor first game will be at home on the 14th so it’s a takeaway of Fish & Chips from North Shields quayside lol

I swear I’m not just saying this but the unseeded group looks the far harder group on paper.

Liverpool did us a mad favour, great we don’t have to play Anzhi! Think we’re actually on the better side of the draw too

The unseeded teams most of them would be seeded if they were at full strength, every game ie us, Napoli

SEEDED – Liverpool, Viktoria Plzen, Fenerbahce, Bordeaux, Steaua Bucuresti, Dnipro, Genk, Rubin Kazan, Lyon, Lazio, Metalist Kharkiv, Hannover, Chelsea, CFR Cluj, Olympiakos, Benfica

UNSEEDED – Anzhi Makhachkala, Atletico Madrid, Borussia Monchengladbach, Newcastle United, VfB Stuttgart, Napoli, FC Basel, Inter Milan, Sparta Prague, Tottenham Hotspur, Bayer Leverkusen, Levante, Zenit St Petersburg, BATE Borisov, Dynamo Kiev, Ajax Amsterdam

Apart from Liverpool, Chelsea (teams we can’t get), Lyon, Rubin Kazan, Benifca and Lazio. The teams in the seeded are very average, or do not know much about, or just from a poor league but are not bad like Olympiakos. A bit like Scotland, Rangers and Celtic are basically Scottish football

While in Unseeded Sparta Prague and BATE(actually from the sounds of it, they are a decent team that aren’t far from being a Champions League, last 16 teams) every team is very good.

Europa League can be a big help, say we win it and have a good run next year, because of being the holders, the Premier League does not effect Europa League. for example in 2014-15 we could be in the Champions League then we would be in the pot 1 so it would be easier to get into last 16.
Also I think if they want a more competitive Europa League, the winners get into Champions League
