An Unfit Ben Arfa The Only Highlight Last Night – Video

10:56 am, Tuesday, December 11th, 2012 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 489 Comments

The one highlight last night was the return to the first team of the great Hatem Ben Arfa, who had been out of the last few games with a hamstring injury, but he scored a great goals and is our Man of the Match with 41% of the vote, with Vurnon Anita is second place on 27%.

Ben Arfa – after scoring terrific goal last night

And Alan Pardew withdrew the possible match-winner early last night,  because of the Frenchman’s lack of match fitness, and he was replaced by Shola Ameobi, who is hardly the threat of a Hatem Ben Arfa.

Ben Arfa had already hit a superb goal after 54 minutes, when he literally scored a goal out of nothing.

This is what the Newcastle manager told the local press today:

“He was short of match fitness, and I thought he struggled in the early part of the game to pick up the pace.” “However, he had some great moments.” “He was tiring and I had to remove him.” “It was a terrific goal and that is what he can create.”

He may not have been match fit but Ben Arfa was the best player on the Newcastle side last night – and to try to cheer up our readers this morning, take a look at his magnificent goal last night – maybe a few times. :D

And if you haven’t already voted for your Man of the Match – here’s your chance.

shola, is a parasite, a leech, that should have been moved on a long time ago

if he loved the club that much,, he would try running, moving would be a good start

just because someone does his best , does not mean his best is good enough,

    that is pardew,
    shola
    obertan
    perch
    willamson
    simpson,,

the manager is out of his depth

i never watched the man manc game, just seen what G Nevil was saying yesterday,, SAF targeted there right back, something like55% of all there attacks came down man u’s right side, normally its even across L C R,

our manager thinks lump it long, or give it to HBA,,

tactics ,, we all new on thursday when we seen marv playing in europe, he was not starting against fulham

if we can read pardew like a book, all the othe amangers can

ppl talk about stoke wiggan games and its improved,, how where, we played poor, won one and lost one, but wigan down to 10 men still thoght they could get something out of the game and attacked us

possesion was 50-50 over 90 mins we had an extra man for 80 of those

  • 2 Indian Magpie // Dec 11, 2012 at 11:01 AM

    Catchy

You remember Pardew Saying “shola is his favourite player”

    I am still wondering why.

  • 3 catchy in norway // Dec 11, 2012 at 11:02 AM

    bills-son

but we have played with 9 men all season

i have been saying it since match 1

ba second half of last season was also a passenger

then put other out of position, we are all over the place,

they highlighted our defending last night,, one set piece where all our defenders where behind the attacker,, now if it was one u think bad positioning,, but all 3 where behind the attacker, thats being coached into them,,

colo is a first class international, he would know this, so for him to do it and let others do it,, its because thats wht there being told

get him out soon before its to late

  • 4 catchy in norway // Dec 11, 2012 at 11:04 AM

    Indian Magpie

    its not just shola,,

he has a thing for underdogs,,

    perch
    ober
    to name but a few

his job is to pick the best team to win a game, not his fave players and fit them in

  • 5 YorkshiresFinestGeordie // Dec 11, 2012 at 11:07 AM

I had a wierd dream last night that demba ba was sold to Dortmund for 9.5M. I don’t know why.

roberts and shola are 2 different players

roberts chases everything down, shola wasnt everything done for him

and yes i would,, but im sure once you all had seen my quality, and if it didnt match the direction the club was going , i wouldnt get another one,,

we have let better players go for free,, guthrie being one of them

  • 7 Transfer Sage // Dec 11, 2012 at 11:08 AM

    catchy

Don’t blame shola for not being good enough. It’s not his fault successive manager give him contracts and game time.

I’m sure you would sign a contract at newcastle because you loved the team even if you knew you weren’t good enough. Especially when you know you probably wont get as good a deal anywhere else.

  • 8 catchy in norway // Dec 11, 2012 at 11:09 AM

im thinking routledge for 2 mil or abertan for 3

pardew is not good for us

  • 9 Transfer Sage // Dec 11, 2012 at 11:10 AM

    cacthy

Also I think roberts is a very lazy player too…he chases more down than shola but they basically do the same…which is nothing 90% of the time they get the ball.

  • 11 Indian Magpie // Dec 11, 2012 at 11:12 AM

This is not shola related but we slandered (by we i mean you) a player like Luque who was a spanish International, but will not dare criticize shola.

  • 12 Jail for Ashley // Dec 11, 2012 at 11:13 AM

I watched some Turkish channel last night with Andy Townsend and Gareth Southgate giving analysis and they both seemed baffled with Pards wasting Cisse out on the right.

  • 13 Transfer Sage // Dec 11, 2012 at 11:13 AM

Also why is campbell never tried?

He played as a sub against hartlepool in 5/10 minutes did a lot of godo things.

From what I have seen in reserves and his record he is better than ranger and probably easily able to give shola a run for his spot.

And don’t just take my word…pardew said himself that campbell is as good as shola when they all train.

Why has he not been given a go? I know he had that unjury recently but he never played before then either.

  • 14 Indian Magpie // Dec 11, 2012 at 11:14 AM

Does any 1 think this run will have an impact on how we view Europa and FA cup

  • 15 Rotonda heights // Dec 11, 2012 at 11:15 AM

I find it incredible some people are so in denial. Supporting NUFC and being peed off about the manager’s tactics, dismal form and endless excuses aren’t mutually exclusive.

You can still support your team but recognise a very limited, stubborn and at times just plain loopy manager.

Fulham were bottom of the form guide and hadn’t scored 1 goal in 5 hours, but 33 year old Berbatov owned us.

Alarmingly there just seems to be a willingess by some to accept the status quo of mediocrity that now exists and just hope the situation will reverse itself of it’s own accord.

We have some great ball players. It’s so easy to correct what is wrong now.

    1) Perch in for Willo. Hopefully M’Biwa / Douglas in Jan

    2) Alternate Ba and Cisse as the central striker. This may be resolved sooner than we think if Ba goes and I believe Remy if he comes, can play left of a front 3 so maybe happy days again.

    3) RB or LB desperately needed. I can not bear seeing Simmo crossing to no one and any attacks breaking down time and again. So either Santon RB and a new LB
    or vice verca.

    4) Guti needs a rest. Marveaux needs games and to create as well as putting it all on Benny.

If we are changing to 433 or 4231 that’s great, but play the right people that can do the job. Not an ace goal poacher as a right winger

  • 16 Transfer Sage // Dec 11, 2012 at 11:15 AM

  • 18 croftus5678 // Dec 11, 2012 at 11:16 AM

there was lots of good performances last night not only ben arfa and anyone who watched the game should have seen how well most of our players played even cisse/ba linked up well and they was lucky with 1st goal and we should have had another 2.
was only willo and collo who let us down (collo is norm solid so he can be excused for one bad game but willo is making far too many mistakes for my liking and could do with some sideline action imo)

  • 19 toonarmydownsouth // Dec 11, 2012 at 11:17 AM

    Indian/catchy
Aye its sholas fault we lost last night all shola
What are you on catchy? And Jason roberts? Really?
Also catchy why the hell are you on about obertan and perch they’ve bearly featured this season why are blaming these players?
What about the p1ss poor performances tiotes been churning out? I’d happily see him dropped for perch or bigi
What about colo since the liverpool game? He’s been awful and cost us the second goal last night along with tiote (stupid free kick) and krul ( a keeper should be coming out and collecting a ball on the six yard line in the middle of the goal)
Why dont you pick up on these things catchy instead of just churninh out the same repetitive spiel everyday

  • 20 Indian Magpie // Dec 11, 2012 at 11:17 AM

TADS agree Tiote was very poor has been for a while.

He used to be my favorite player, in fact we used to make jokes on Tiote

  • 23 Transfer Sage // Dec 11, 2012 at 11:20 AM

    Tads

No fault at krul for the free kick for me.

Too much pace and not enough height for the keeper.

It was another foukd by tiote who seems to love bringing people down in dangerous areas and colo was the wrong side if his man.

  • 24 sirtoongospel // Dec 11, 2012 at 11:21 AM

Shola, Perch, Obertan, are you seriously saying the season we are having is their fault?

And from your entire list, the only Pardew signing is Obertan, who I still think can have a career here.

The like of Jonas, Willo, Simmo, are all inherited players and need replacing if we are to kick on.

We have 3 strikers in the club! No back up, it is so threadbare the squad, it’s almost untrue.

Yoiu need 2 top players for every position. We have Krul, Elliot and Harper, which is good.

We have 2 full backs in the club!!! 3 centre halves. So we need 3 defenders minimum. We have 3 CM players in Tiote, Cabaye and Anita, so we need one more high quality player.

Wide men, we have HBA who is good enough, MArveaux and Obertan have a bit to prove. So really 2 top wide men required.

Strikers, we have 2 crackers, then Shola. I don’t want rid of Shola, I just want him as a last resort. We need 2 forwards. One should be seriously fast.

Looking at it this way, we need 8 players in who are genuine Prem players.

The rest in our squad should be exactly that, squad players. Perch, Jonas, Willo shouldn’t be anywhere near starting, but I would take Perch over one or two straight away as he is at least mobile.

Pardew said he was chasing the top 4, but we are only allowed 11 purples according to Derek!! Where are the 11 please Derek?

I go with Krul, Colo, Cabaye, Tiote, HBA, Ba, Cisse. Santon is a great player but is young and is not on massive money.

We have 7 players there who can hold there own at pretty much any game in our league. But a good team should have 15 at this level!!!!!!!!

Come on Ashley, stop taking the piss out of us!

  • 28 Home n Howay // Dec 11, 2012 at 11:23 AM

Repost. Sorry, just wanted your view on my formation

-Have Fergy in for Jonas on the left wing. Dont understand Pardew’s love affair with Guti. Is it because he wins us a few freekicks? That apart I dont see his contribution in the side. Fergy on the left wing would put in more crosses in than Jonas anyday.

-Also like to see us getting more infield than just running down the wings everytime & putting in hopeful crosses. HOPEFUL. yeah thats precisely what they are. Benny, Marveaux & Anita linking up with Ba & Cisse ahead with those through balls & little one-twos would be much more effective than hopeful crosses.

    - If you are going to play Ba & Cisse, Pardew just has to make sure they link together like they did against Wigan. Whenever you see them, thers always acres of space between them which makes it impossible for either of them to find each other. Cisse barely gets 5-6 touches of the ball whole game.

I’d drop both Jonas, Cisse for Fergie, Marveaux & go for a 4-2-3-1

    ———— Krul ————
    Simpson – Colo – Willo – Santon
    ——— Tiote —— Anita ———
Ben Arfa —— Marveaux —— Fergy
    ————— Ba ———–

    What do ya think chums?

  • 30 theystillletmevote // Dec 11, 2012 at 11:26 AM

Personal opinion – and good on catchy for supporting from Norway – is that shola doesn’t deserve to be called a leech or a parasite.

He is an injury-prone squad player of limited ability but he isn’t the reason the toon lost last night.

We were already 2-1 down when he came on for Ben Arfa (thought myself that Marveaux would have made more sense but again just my opinion) He won a few headers…but also fell over the ball at one point…and gave away a needless free-kick or two…unusually not for off-side.

His languid style is deceptive – he’s even slower than he looks but I like the guy…remembering his debut when he got stuck into the toxic midget Dennis Wise and his efforts against the mackems and in our promotion season show that he can contribute against poorer teams.

It’s NOT down to one player and – like or loathe him – it isn’t all Shola’s fault either.

  • 32 sirtoongospel // Dec 11, 2012 at 11:26 AM

TADS, bang on. Tiote been awful (Cabaye wasn’t great either bfore injury, although he is by a mile our best midfielder) and Colo was torn a new A-Hole by Suarez, and hasn’t looked the same since.

We need Yohan back and fit, and I would love to see him and Anita start a game together in Cm, now Anita has found his feet a little.

  • 33 croftus5678 // Dec 11, 2012 at 11:26 AM

you bring up a good point with tiote.
while he is undoubtedly the best player we have in that possition and on his day pretty much runs the midfield alone…but i tend to think all round with his cards and silly freekicks ect ect perch may be a better option for us there and take some cash for him while we can and maybe go for someone like sissoko as a more all round midfielder

  • 34 Transfer Sage // Dec 11, 2012 at 11:28 AM

    tads

Agree in general krul hasn’t been as good aerially as last year but I just think that was a ball the keeper couldn’t come for but should have been defended better.

  • 35 somaliland-toon // Dec 11, 2012 at 11:30 AM

I would blame everything on Pardew as he has no vision for the club or style of play he got lucky last year because of the confidence installed on the players by Chris Hughton.

  • 36 sirtoongospel // Dec 11, 2012 at 11:30 AM

I wouldn’t drop Cisse in a month of Sundays. I would build a team around him, HBA and Cabaye who are all wonderful players.

It is imperative we sign another cracking CM player. A real box to box player who will drive us forward.

  • 37 toonarmydownsouth // Dec 11, 2012 at 11:31 AM

  • 48 beefman13 // Dec 11, 2012 at 11:41 AM

home and howay, like has been said i like that team also and we cant do much about williamson and simpson maybe perch aaarrrdggg playing out of position centre half and young tav right back.

Not going to happen with AP he will have frigan gutteierez in and willy and simpson in every eleven, the fella is making a rod for his own back is AP.

We have been found out and certain players are offering little to our cause, marveaux surely deserves a decent run in the team and fergie was made a scapegoat by AP in my opinion, plenty of others were not performing but still get played week in week out.

If we took benny out of that game last night that team that played and formation would have us in a relegation battle, we need two quality players in january.

I still like our whole squad but it still needs strengthening and should have been added to in the summer players from last season are bnot doing it and for me play marv play bigi instead of jonas and i would still play fergie in the team but get him more service in better areas instead of on the half way line with two defenders up his backside, and yeas davide santon pass the ball to the lad if he plays in front of you.

I think Colo would be a brilliant holding midfielder. He has done it quite a bit in the past for his country. Colo is a really good footballer, and technically sound. Would win aerial balls in midfield which we don’t at present and would start us playing. Just a thought if we bought 2 CB’s. Mind, we prob won’t buy 1 never mind 2!! lol

  • 54 Jail for Ashley // Dec 11, 2012 at 11:46 AM

All the youngster need to go on loan, same as Nile Ranger should have been sent out to a league one team so he could have got used to hitting the net in somebodies first team, but Mashleys refusal to spend any money meant he had to stay here while his confidence drained and the same reason we can’t afford to let the likes of Fergie and Sammy Amiobi out on loan.Anybody who still thinks Mike Ashley is the best owner we’ve ever had needs their heads testing.

i never once blamed shola, i dont blame any player on that pitch,,

i dont think there good enough, shola has never been good enough,
take tursday in europe, ranger was our best outfield player, on this site in the poll shola got 8 votes, 3 bottom

players have to justify there place in the team and sqaud, whether there a kid or an adult

not many of them senior players are putting in a shift where was pardew tonight saying thats not good enough, il send them out on loan, ??

no i have said since the day he got here, PARDEW IS THE WRONG MAN FOR THE JOB

to many of you on here are blinded by words that come out of his mouth , rather than see with your own eyes

we could get rid of 11 players, and get the right ones to do what pardew wants,
or get one manager and get one that suits the type of player we have,, we have a very attack minded squad and a defensiv manager, and he signed a lot of them

BA CISSE HBA CABAYE SANTON ANITA all seem to lve to attack

  • 56 Transfer Sage // Dec 11, 2012 at 11:46 AM

he may well beat simmo but not many couldn’t. I just think colo is better for us at centre back.

  • 57 croftus5678 // Dec 11, 2012 at 11:46 AM

marv/cabaye would be my 2 attacking mf’s in the centre one or the other as marv doesnt seem comfortable on the wing and allways does good in the centre.
and i think arfa is our only decent winger ober is not the best crosser and its not worth mentioning the others tbh too young or just dont have enough quality.
anita for me is a must in cm aswell he links everything together with his energy tackling/passing/creativity i would pick him any day over a tiote.
like it was said before with the team we have at our desposal atm i dont think its a case of we dont need wingers but that we only have 1 player who is actually any good there so whats the point in trying to play wingers.
    ——–perch/tiote———-
    —cabaye/marv—anita—
    ——–arfa——ba———-
    ————-cisse————-

and use santon to get forward and prob tav as he’s our other best attacking fb

  • 58 Big Pappa Cissé // Dec 11, 2012 at 11:46 AM

Even without the lack of investment we should be playing a lot better than we are. There are maybe 7 teams that have consistently had better starting 11?s than us in the PL this season so in theory we should be comfortably in the top 10 but find ourselves just above the relegation zone. How people can justify this is beyond me and they need to wake up and smell the coffee IMO. Yes injury’s should have knocked us of track a bit but as for derailing our entire season, only the biggest optimist would believe that

Thanks. I dont see Pardew dropping Simmo, Willo or even Jonas for Man City. But theres a chance he might drop Cisse & start with Marveaux.

    Sir Toon

If you want to build a team around Cisse, you got to play him in the centre. He is a complete waste out wide. As I said he barely gets 5-6 touches entire match.

    Croftus

yup would love to see Adam Campbell brought on instead of Shola. Atleast give him a chance to show what he’s made of.

get cisse up front with cabs, benny and mary feeding him. we sill return to form.

sell simmo, get shot and pay the asking price for debuchy. it is imperative we stay up with new money coming in. maybe another CB, maybe douglas, or shako would be great.

croftus, the youngins are the ones that got us through europe they have performed no worse than the seniors in my opinion, a bad game by most against bordeaux but the youngins got all the blame, i said before bordeaux are no mugs at home in europe and very rarely have they lost, i will say again fergie and bigi and adam campbell are definatly good enough to not have to go out on loan, tav is coming along nicely as well, just needs his positioning sorted, we are so bloody fickle the seniors have been pants for most of the season but now its the youngins who have done really well for me who people are saying should go out on loan.

Easy targets are the younger players when half our senior players offer us nothing.

by know means guaranteed…. I just think from what I have been hearing it seems more serious this time. Ashley doesn’t want to chance missing out on the prem league money next year.

He is also wary of relegation…he knew he got away with it last time…this time a lot more players would leave…we dont have the core of british players like nolan, smith, barton, carroll, butt who all played a big role in getting us back up.

He knows cabs, ben arfa, cisse, ba, santon, tiote…all will have much better offers than us if we go and we could linger down there a long time and he will never add value to the club that way.

    Beefman,
When defending Mike Ashleys tight waddery earlier in the season I remember being flabbergasted at your statement of that we didn’t need to strengthen, now we need a few more players, if your going to get upset at people slagging Mashley at least be consistent when defending his policies.

  • 72 croftus5678 // Dec 11, 2012 at 12:05 PM

    @61

nope not blaming the youngsters at all and yep some have been outperforming the 1st team bigi like a say has no need to go out as you can see what playing for coventry has done for the lad and tav i listed as being our best fb other than santon for his attacking ability but i still think he needs another half season of reg fast paced games to toughen him up a little and make his concentration better but with fergie i will have to disagree his crossing is not to be questioned but i think with them bulking him up he has lost a lot of pace and i think 6mth’s in the champs or equivalent to gain him some more pace again and he could be the left winger we have been looking for.

  • 73 Transfer Sage // Dec 11, 2012 at 12:06 PM

I asked about the contract as well but no details were available. We imagined it was incentive based and also has a few get outs for ashley but thats just an educated guess…no facts on that issue.

I can seriously see we will lose all the games we have left before January and some people still forever optimist that AP will fix everything.
Let’s say we over achieved last season, is this the real NUFC? IF this is the real version of what we should be expecting, that’s just sucks.

  • 77 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Dec 11, 2012 at 12:10 PM

Jail….I was a big member of the “It’s more important we kept our team together than adding this summer” brigade and to date have been proved oh so wrong.

However, my reasoning at the time was:

    1) I had no idea how poorly most of our players would be this season. It’s been shocking how poor players that we count on have been. Tiote, Cisse, Cabaye, even Krul and Colo. That has had a huge effect on things.
    2) Injuries. Teams always get them, that’s for sure, but they have been pretty bad so far and we’ve been caught out good and proper in this dept.
    3) Youth. Some have put in some good performances, but generally they haven’t stepped up quite as much as i thought and I imagine the club thought they would. This isn’t a reflection on on the Bordeaux game, that was an unfair game really to expect too much from them, but there was a clear lack of fight, which was disappointing.

  • 78 beefman13 // Dec 11, 2012 at 12:11 PM

Jail, i have said all along we needed a quality right back and centre half, in reality we brought in four and sold three, mostly our of contract lads ie loven guthrie not sure about besty, so we did not sell any purples and brought ina dutch international a very promising lad in big and amalfitano with young curtis good.

We did not weaken but we needeed to be even stronger with those extra two and thats were the club has to hold its hands up, we have had injuries most teams do its part and parcel of football, we needed that extra quality back up.

WE have progressed each of the last three seasons when most said we would not, this season we have not at the moment progressed, we have been found out to a degree my problem lies with the managers teams he is playing and the static staid formations, he is not mixing it up enough and is still to defensive minded, i still think we have a decent squad and would not be were we are even with injuries but for mr the manager is being to pig headed and loyal to players who are just not doing it when others givena more decent honest run in the team would, ie marv dropped for one pacer jonas is a step backwards, i like jonas as a man but he offers us nothing apart from graft, not good enough now in the prem.

Havent been on here for a few days but its sad to see how poor we were at times last night. I said I would give Pardew till the end of the season but I’m not convinced he knows what he wants to do – or if he does know, whether he has the bravery to implement it. I have often wondered who is running the football side of the club, particularly in terms of transfers, because he doesnt seem comfortable with guys like Marveaux, and would play Guti even if he wasnt fit! Some of the senior pros need to have a long hard look at themselves too. Tiote is rubbish for a start. This isnt looking good, and the sooner he stops trying to play Cisse on the wing the better. Incidentally, I thought Gary Neville’s pre match analysis of Cisse and Ba was totally flawed. Its all very disappointing and Pards needs to shape up fast because last season is looking like a fluke.

    i think you are right.
we did get stronger in the window but it seems the other teams got even stronger and i’m thinking the lucky part of last season was the fact injuries were kind to us making it look like our squad was more in depth that it actually is ! and combined with the lack of quality some of our players have been playing with this season we may have needed a few more signings to spice things up which pard’s has recognised.
just hopeing like most on here we get lucky with a class cb signing and rb/lb signing as i think this has cost us a fair few points this season.

Sirtoon #51 – Not a bad shout but i think we have enough midfileders at the mo. The urgent matter is the defense.

On Cisse – I still dont think we are playing to his stengths, he is a poacher. Watch when a shot goes in on the keeper (rare i know) he is first to react. If we had Andy Cole in this team would he do any better? Not IMO create chances or half chances in the box and he will finish, ive got no doubt.

  • 89 Munster Mag // Dec 11, 2012 at 12:25 PM

Ibiza, in fairness mate, you got it wrong then, as did every other guy who was far too comfortable about our lack of spending. This lack of investment has caused complacency , and in terms of injuries, this really should have been factored in by the club. Not you perhaps, but too many guys on this site defend Ashley and Co, rather than looking at the reality of whats going on. When I asked for 12 mill to be spent I was accused of not respecting the clubs finances by some muppet!! My real concern is that pardew is not getting the most out of the talent he has, and I would have no issue in letting him go if this is going to continue. The lack of aggression was shocking at times last night ( we are obsessed with keeping shape rather than competing for the ball) and for AGAIN, a useless first half. What sort of motivation is happening pre-game???

Lack of investment will show on Saturday. You’d like to think after a 5th place finish we’d have bought a few in and be really optimistic. We should (at home) be taking it to City and at least getting a draw. Everton/west brom/Swansea would all give them a game. Yet with colo and willo struggling with Sidwell and Berbatov, I quiver when thinking of Toure, Aguero, Tevez, Dzeko, Nasri. Open the transfer window now?

  • 93 daztoon // Dec 11, 2012 at 12:31 PM

  • 94 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Dec 11, 2012 at 12:32 PM

Munster….Ultimately, I and others were wrong. Most of us did want new players in, mainly RB and a CB as we all know they’re due. Our pont at the time wasn’t that we didn’t need new players, it was just that the club will wait to get them within their model and that we should be okay until then – WRONG!

As for Pardew…I thought the Wigan game was a huge improvement. We pressed players, chased balls and helped our players out with movement. Why didn’t we last night? Is that Pardew, is it the players, I honestly don’t know. I can’t imagine it’s Pardews instructions, but at the same time, if players aren’t carrying out orders, why select them? Lack of depth and options? Perhaps, but the line he’s walking is becoming more and more troubled.

With the line up last night I’m not really sure what else he could have done. Marveaux for Guti? Maybe, but we’re assuming Marv was ready. He played well against Fulham, not so good against Bordeaux. Is he fit, should he be first choice? All guesswork.

I don’t buy in to the idea that Pardew doesn’t want his best players on the field, it just makes no sense whatsoever. He may be guilty of favourtism, no idea really.

    munster

Thats annoys me too…we start so slowly.

We started slow last night, went a goal down…fought back to 1-1 then eased off a bit and conceded then pressed again.

Why we can’t jsut maintain pressure throughout a game is beyond me.

If you apply 10-15 mins possession a lot of teams can withstand it….but if you apply pressure over 90 minutes on a team one or two cracks will open and you can get in.

Thats what top sides too…don’t gave the opposition a break to rest their legs and minds….you have to be relentless.

Stoke play long ball football but they do it well…have a few players around crouch and bombard the opposition…..if you put enough good balls up their with the right players around a good target man you will create chances as some will fall your way.

I don’t want us to play long ball as it doesn’t get the best out of our players but if pardew insists on it at least get the midfield closer to the forwards to win the 2nd ball.

hotdog – i agree that defence needs urgent attention, it has for 2 years to be honest.

But in midfield, Tiote leaves for a month, and it will be full month as IC will probably win ACON. Cabaye is injured. You only have one CM player left. Anita. We need another one in urgently. A box to box player.

With Cisse I agree. He has to be our focal point. He id first to react to everything, the sooner Pards realises that the rest of the team don’t think quickly enough the better. I feel if Cisse played for Arsenal he would score 30 league goals. Easy.

    B) yes your are in a match right now!
And that goes for the entire 11 on the pitch not just a couple of the scape goats!

    Beefman
Think you might be mis interpreting the point about the youngsters
No one is saying there poor, no is saying there to blame for the season
But simply at this stage of there career they need to be playing regular starting football at a competitive level which the U21′s league doesn’t seem to be!
They wont reach there potential warming the bench and they wont really feature in europa i reckon now the group stages have passed

that team would be exciting, dynamic and pretty explosive. Teams wouldnt want to attack us as they would get obliterated on the break. Sakho would be the key signing, he is a beast.

Did not want to comment last night as was totally shattered to watch that wee journeyman Damien Duff cross in the winner last night!!!

Him and Santon on the left hand side would be deadly at the moment!!!

Honestly we need a left footed player on the left who can cross people say Fergy is not strong enough but the amount of times Jonas had a chance to put in a decent ball and did not was shocking!Ferguson would have put quality into the box as he always does

Pardew’s tactics sometimes are shocking we are dominating midfield because we have an extra guy in there Arfa goes off cause he is knackered instead of bringing on Marveux to keep the extra man we put Shola in there who goes up front meaning we have 3 strikers up top and then Fulham start to catch us on the counter attack as we end up with only 2 in the middle!

Also why bring on Bigi and Marveux with 5 minutes to go??what impact are they supposed to make in that time??

Watching Jonas and Santon Huffing and puffing beating a defender and then cut back onto their right foot was so easy to defend against Hangeland could not believe his luck when we started trying to bombard them in the air

  • 108 Santon03 // Dec 11, 2012 at 12:44 PM

I can blame him for top international showing not commitment, the inability to pass 5 yards, the lack of movement after they play the ball (run into space and give an angle, don’t just stand there)

There are so many things contributing to our poor form…none of this is down to just one player or just the manager….players are not performing, manage is being very bizarre and the idiot llambias hasn’t helped at all.

if i was him, i would be gutted, i would not be putting it in for the manager,,
how is it good for team moral, when he comes out and slates the kids on thursday,, when we all seen more from them,,

you claim to sit on the fence, when its very clear you have 2 feet in the pardew camp, trying to be the voice of reason, but you always tend to lean towards pardew,

from a transfer point, he should have got more from above, but from a team point of view he should be getting way more out of the team than he is,,,

let the board do there job, pardew should concentrate on his,,

what did you see last night to justify the closing the training sessions off?

    any new tactics

    any new player

it was the same ol same ol

I think guti was okay last night to be fair
On his crossing, just a theory but
In the last 10-15 he put a few decent balls in, mainly that lovely little dink with the outside of his boot and not one forward out shola ba or cisse made a run across the keeper or even into the six yard box
Are our wingers really that poor at crossing or do we have no movement in the box?

Can someone honestly point out why Jonas is a professional footballer? In all seriousness he has to be the worst player ever to play in the premier league. He has no qualities in his game. Sone say he tries hard which is a negative in my mind because it means he actually gets the ball. As soon as he gets the ball you have to accept we are going to lose the ball it really is that bad. Firstly, I was called a fence sitter by people on here and the joke rolled on. I have always been an “optimist” and pro Pardew, for a regular reader you should know that.

Marv has had one decent game. So whilst looking promising I think your argument is somewhat flawed.

New tactics…Well, we saw a different type of corner! Just a little joke to try and lighten the mood. In all honesty, we heard about the boarding up yesterday and the game was last night, do we expect these things to come in to play with one training session?

my view on this has always been the same…judge a manager at the end of the season (only make a change in a drastic situation…like qpr had to)

I think pardew needs to get a system to suit the players…not persists with a system which doesn’t suit them.

If we show no improvement by the end of may get rid and replace.

The board need to sign the much needed defenders in january as a minimum as well.

But even fi we dont….pardew needs to find a away to get the midfield to help get the ball of willo and simmo…no godo letting them hofo it saying they dont know better…get players to drop deeper to collect it and make them have some responsibility for how they play.

Our success(!) last season was largely built on strong defensive performances and making the most of our chances. That has not been the case so far this season.
The individual weaknesses in the side have been well documented, however the team is not defending as a unit but as bunch of individuals.
The team need to defend as a team and make the most of sharp incisive attacks.

  • 127 hazzy // Dec 11, 2012 at 1:07 PM

yeah a probably got caught in the moment a little bit Williamson gives him a good run for his money but it has to be demoralising for people like Anita and Marv because as soon as Cabaye is back Anita will be on the bench and to players with obvious quality are dropped as a result of a player with obviously no quality has a guarenteed first team place

  • 128 cyprus // Dec 11, 2012 at 1:13 PM

Ed, don’t blame you but this is what you were writing just 6 months ago:

“Newcastle are getting a terrific name once again, not only for the way the lads performed last season, but for the thrifty and financially sound way the club is being run today.

We’ll see a lot more clubs follow Newcastle’s lead as the UEFA Financial Fair Play Rules come into effect over the next couple of years.

But Newcastle are in great shape at the moment – both on and off the field – and it’s really hard to argue with that.

    Howay The Lads!!”

Hhm, really hard to argue that? All the other clubs will follow our ‘thrifty’ lead? Financial fair play rules?!

We need three ready, game changers in January, break the bank if we must, because the bank will be broken in any case, should we not buy good players. Ready, PL level players cost money, now there’s a lesson.

And Ed, I ain’t condemning you, we were all caught by the wave :) Now, back to reality!

  • 129 Wayayman // Dec 11, 2012 at 1:14 PM

A lot of good comments here -and some rubbish ones too… ;-)

We’re so frustrating to watch this season. We’re as bad as we were relegation season, not being able to shut teams out or protect a lead or draw.
    2 things I think really have to change for us to even start getting back to where we hoped we’d be;
One, the defence has been decimated this season with injuries already. Collo is getting back to full match sharpness but Willo will never ever be good enough. He’s a trier, but that’s not enough at this level. He looks short of pace, confidence and game-reading ability. He’s too often caught wrong side of the striker and for a bloke who is decent in the air he’s shiite at defending set peices. Horrible in fact. He gets distracted by the bullying that goes in in the box instead of (like Saylor) just out muscling his man, he gets lost easily.
Simposon. For christs sake. I know some people here like him but god knows why. He can not defend, he rarely tackles and he can not beat a man. His first instinct is to pass the ball backwards, and his crossing is diabolical. He mis reads situations, meaning that he leaves the CD exposed, from the first game of the season against Spurs, I’ve not seen any fullback give their man as much space and time. Yet he does this time and time again.
No wonder Willo looks poor, with Simpson in the side…
My second point though, is that we see this, the oppo sees this, hell even people who only watch the games on TV see this. So why does the manager not try to rectify it?

You cant make a bad defender a good one overnight, but you could for example get him used to closing down players who have the ball without diving in, or to be more aware of exactly where the winger is instead of aimlessly running back towards goal. Defend your space, keep goal soddin side.
Or the coaches could have hims hitting balls into the box from the beckham position. Simpson actually had the cross-master to watch up close when he was at Man U. Beckham never (or rarely) took a player on down the right but he would take out 2 or 3 defenders with a cross. Ir’s not rocket science, just swing the blookdy thing in toward the six yard line for Cisse to attack.
As long as Pardew makes changes like he did last night (and every other game almost) we’ve got no chance. His idea of making a change is to take Benny off (I know that was planned) but for who??? Shola? Jeeeeeeeeezzzzzz…

Im getting the fear of George Riley just thinking about it.

Everyone has their own opinions on what has gone wrong this season whether it be tactics, injuries or players under performing but I still maintain that the spirit was removed from the team during that last window, I think it made a statement to the players that we were comfortable with being mediocre and that we punched above our weight last season.

    TDS -

I agree!! I was screaming that at the TV. Just one of them to get across either the keeper or their marker on more than one occasion when balls were being put into the box.

I have to say that Simmo’s floated crosses gave our strikers next to no chance to beat their marker in the air and generate any sort of power. Every time he got the ball to cross it I knew it would be headed away by their defenders!

So all in all, Jonas’ crossing probably wasn’t as bad as our strikers made it look at times!!

Still amazing the people coming on here insisting we strengthened last summer, in theory I suppose selling three and bringing in four (two of which haven’t played in the Premiership) is strengthening if you do the maths, but then again coating a crumbling brick wall with a thin layer of pollyfilla could in theory be classed as strengthening.

The truth is as long as Pardew remains in charge of this team we will play shite football and continue to struggle.

He is clueless has been for a long time, anybody thinking any different is deluded.

Ashley appointed a failed journeyman manager and that is what he is now proving.

Our squad is so much better than, Swansea’s, Fulham’s, West Brom’s, Wigan’s, however they all knock the ball about better than us, why? the manager.

Pick a team to play football Pardump, not hoofball, Perch must play instead of Williamson at the weekend, his selection is a joke,

Also you’re first comment.. 4 of them 5 players aren’t even in our fully fit fitst choice XI and the 5th we tried to get a replacement in the summer. (Debuchy) So you can’t say Pardew is out of his depth because of that.

I find it funny how fans come on here and say i think jonas played well did you see that decent cross or i think ba and cisse linked well they passed it to each other two times. That is them doing well by their own standards because they are usually a disgrace. Watch any winger in the prem even on a bad day will deliver decent crosses into the box regularly. Watch any st partnership and they will play passes frequently between each other but because cisse and ba found each other that 1 time they are starting to gel. Get real!!!”!

Just the people I mentioned earlier in the comments. Nothing set in stone yet, but the club has a list they are looking from what I heard.

I know it will mean nothing to you all on here as I can validate this claim but I have heard that a lot more seems to be getting done this window than in the past couple…Ashley doesn’t seem to want to go down as he believes a lot of these lads would move on and we would struggle to come up…which would lose him money on his investment (or NUFC as we call it).

The only out I heard is the one I mentioned 2 weeks ago…ben arfa to arsenal…but that was nothing more than interest…nothing remotely formal had been shown by arsenal.

  • 143 Nufc-83 // Dec 11, 2012 at 1:45 PM

The only reason Jonas should be on the pitch is if we are under the cosh in the 2nd half of a game that we are winning and need a cm to come who can offer energy and protection. That is his only role at the club as i see it.

  • 144 check the toastie // Dec 11, 2012 at 1:49 PM

Jonas is another culprit in gving the ball away to cheaply, however last night he was way behind Tiote and Williamson in that respect.

Tiote has lost his mojo. A shadow of the player that first signed and played under Hughton.

It seems that everybody is playing shit, personally think that they are fed up with Pardews cautious and negative approach.

Have said it before but dont like players (especially shit ones) who are not staying with the club i.e. Simpson maybe Ba being automatic choices. In both these cases also the team would have a much better blend if they were just axed.

Any chance the team selection will be exactly the same for the Man City game, i think so. It is going to be awful, truly awful, not looking forward to it one bit.

a lot of people are in denial because of pardew’s 1 good season. He has never been consistently successful ever.
last season we had several moments of brilliance from certain individuals mixed in with a large slice of good fortune.

Yes we should have got more players in but there is no way we should be getting beaten so badly off the likes of the 5 teams we’ve just played whose squads are vastly inferior to ours.

West ham fans I know told me that if I thought allardyce was bad wait till we see pardew’s hoofball and his preference for playing journeymen over quality players. Boy were they ever right.

It’s c..p football under a c..p manager. People need to wake up very quickly to the fact that pardew is eminently capable of taking teams down. Every team list is a disappointment these days and defies logic.

he is dragging good players down to the level of the bad players,,

passing should be the first thing they train with every single day,, yesterday, i did not see many one touch passing from our team,, fulham looked slik at times,,

berb, looked class up front on his own, we used no strength against him, he won everything, he plucked a 60 yard pass out of the air, with out a chalenge

one guy sets the team up,, one guy makes the subs, one guy is paid a fortune to motovate the team/squad

No player or manager would ever teach or adopt that approach (unless doing zonal marking, which they definitely weren’t doing last night) – the reason they do it is because they switch off for a split second

Collocini is a great player for us but can’t park his mistake on pardew. We’ve had too many defensive lapses this season and that is solely down to concentration from the players. Blame Pardew for poor tactics and team selection, but this kind of thing is down to the players and nothing else…

I think there is a balance between what is needed and value. Unfortunately that balance needs to be addressed as it is currently wrong. Pardew said the board were looking into things so I think we judge them after january on this.

They failed in the summer, they underestimated the players needed. They have now seen what is needed…you could argue we need 4-5 good players to be brought into the squad…minimum of 3 I say…CB, FB and quick stiker/winger (inside forward to play left).

They now know exactly the issues…they cannot say they don’t know what they need, Carr will have players scouted out if they spend the money.

I’m reserving my final judgement on Pardew until the end of Feb and the board until the end of Jan.

  • 159 Munster Mag // Dec 11, 2012 at 2:07 PM

Hatem, totally agree with that. We’ve seen the best of Pardew and he used up his luck. Now we have a defensive manager who has a fetish for certain “warriors” like the overrated Tiote, the luimited Guti and the out of position Cisse/Ba . I want to give him till the summer out of fairness. Ibiza has been big enough to admit his error ( if thats what its called ) , how many on this site are big enough to stand up and say ” Yes Munstermag, I got it wrong in thinking that Ashley was stupid and shortsighted not to invest more in the summer and I am guilty of over confidence ( just like the complacent team we now have ) and an automatic branding of “negger” of anyone who spoke out against the Fat One. ” :)

We ballsed up, and the guys who said we were ballsing up were called Neggers by the “mini accountants” ( copyright Munster Mag ) on this site. Not pointing at you necessarily TS. Ashley and Llambias made a bags of it – but now we need to get players that suit a style of play – but I dont think Pardew knows what style he wants – or has the balls to implement it if he does know. He needs to bench either Cisse or Ba but cant/wont .

  • 164 Nufc-83 // Dec 11, 2012 at 2:12 PM

Exactly right munster i remember being branded a negger after the window closed because i was so devastated about the lack of investment and the chance we had with the addition of only three quality players (Cb,Fb,St/wg) to push on and be competitive year in year out for the European places. I had constant debates on here with people who said we had improved and we finished 5th so we would be able to at least repeat that this year.

Come on MA, do the right thing. A little investment in a top manager, will pay dividends, I’m sure. Just give us somebody we can be proud of.

  • 166 Munster Mag // Dec 11, 2012 at 2:16 PM

TS, I didnt see it being as bad as this – I agree mate. But all our players have got worse – partly due to themselves, partly due to Pardew, partly due to lack of investment to make them work harder for their place on the team. I have a few big concerns:

    1. Has Pardew have the respect of the team
    2. Does he know what style of play / system he wants
    3. Is he big enough to drop Ba if needed
    4. If we buy players, what type of system do they suit and will they suit us?

A positive in all this has been Anita – really coming along. PS I see Santon ballsed up again defensively but its never spotted as he bombs up the line and does THE SAME THING every time………

Like I say….I hear Ashley is genuinely worried about going down this time as no way will he have that core group of players who stayed last time….these lads will be off like a shot.

There can be no excuse for January (generously I am going to say in the summer he knew what we needed but thought we could get by til jan) not it’s clear we can’t…we really need him to back the side with transfers….they dont have to be expensive, just good quality and ready for first team (eg. michu for 2 mil…very good but cheap)

He needs to have them in ASAP in jan…not eek out every last penny at bring them in 30th/31st to save him self a tenner.

I will wait until the end of the transfer window before blasting Ashley further…he messed up and made a mistake in the summer.

Honestly where did you see us being this point in the season with this team? cause I certaily didn’t have us this low.

  • 171 BelfastMagpie // Dec 11, 2012 at 2:21 PM

    I remember it well.

There was a load of people said we had a stronger squad & thought it was great that we wouldn’t be held to ransom anymore.

If we want to get out of trouble in January, they need to scrap their dodgy transfer policy.

If they play the usual games we’ll sign no one..

  • 172 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Dec 11, 2012 at 2:22 PM

It’s not sad – it’s a drastic outcome that’s required, short term pain for long term gain. I’d much rather Pardew be axed asap, than to have top players, most rated at a much higher level in their profession, relative to their manger, skulking on off to other clubs, due to having no belief in the manager and his methods.

    Catchy

I agree Perch shouldn’t play CB but I’d have him as first choice back up DM behind Tiote and Anita. I disagree that he can’t pass, Perch keeps it simple unlike some others in the team.

The 5 you mentioned though I would say they are good back up players for a mid-table premier league team which is where we should be at the moment. Everybody knew we wouldn’t finish 5th again – maybe 7th at best so I would say they are good back up for us except maybe Williamson who has completely lost the plot recently.

I agree about the passing. This season we have been consistently sloppy which is simply not good enough for a PL team but I don’t think Pardew can hold the full blame for that.

Hmm I said a few weeks ago that I’ll back Pardew throughout the season and then renew my judgement. I’m happy to give him the chance to turn things around and finish mid table. If we do get into a relegation fight then that is simply unacceptable after last season so my view would change but until then I am content.

For the Man City game, my heart says 2-2 since we are at home and are desperate for a result but my head is telling me probably 3-1.

I think you are right on pards not knowing his style.

He signed a lot of technical players, cabs. ben arfa, anita, cisse, (looked at debuchy and de jong) but them keeps playing long balls and banging on about getting carroll back. Very mixed messages.

And I dont buy the excuse simmo and willo can’t play good football. We don’t need them to play good football, they just need to find simple passes to players in front of them.

And if they can’t even manage that pardew needs to look at ways to help them…getting tiote/anita/marv/ben arfa/cabs etc to drop a little deeper to give them an easier option…thats how it should work if they can’t bring the ball out.

But we never even see them try to bring the ball out (even if they fail at it) we should be seeing them bring it out and pass, even if it goes to the opposition sometimes…we haven’t even seen them try.

  • 177 check the toastie // Dec 11, 2012 at 2:29 PM

Do people not get it, the squad currently is good enough to be playing some nice football and threatening top 6/8, we are in this position becuase of Pardews ineptitude and reliance on players who have proved useless.

Perch is now a decent CB in my opinion, miles more capable than Willo, Simpson should be out, Tavernier giving us youth, exuberance and legs down that side and Jonas should be benched, its pretty simple really, also Ba should be put out wide, he is only spitting his dummy out as doing this may affect his move away from the club.

  • 178 santonthenewmaldini // Dec 11, 2012 at 2:29 PM

    @Transfer Sage

I thought that we would be about 6/7th even without reinforcements and if we had not have lost all those stupid games against teams we should be beating we would be round about 5th or 6th

But now that we have got another tough set of games where we could probably get beat another 4 in a row we are not going to look a great prospect for players to join as we will be in around the bottom 3 by January

Thing is so will Sunderland, QPR, Reading and Southampton be bottom as well and i bet you all 4 of them will spend more money than us probably quicker than us as well

Funny as same thing happened to Stoke and Everton when they got into europe they struggled the season after only team who are doing well are Spurs cause they invested properly and do not change the team too much

I am away on a staff night out Friday night going to get heavily drunk dont think i will bother getting up to watch the game on Saturday cause if City turn up they might hit us for 4 or 5 and i dont know if i could take that it in a fragile state!

  • 179 markmac // Dec 11, 2012 at 2:30 PM

I dont really know where were going wrong, but theres definately a lack of quality in depth and therefore a lack of competetion for a starting spot and i think that makes a big difference, aswell as AP blatently having his ‘favourites’. i must admit AP reminds me of ‘the wally with the brolly’ when he was england manager having his mates and referring to them by there nicknames ”lamps and JT” etc… forget friendships and put ya foot down and give em a round of fcuks!

Transfer sage you speak allot of sense tbf and you can tell you know your football. What i have noticed though is anita and Tiote do drop deep to offer options but still 80% of the time willo and simmo launch it forward. Its clear to me they are worried that they will misplace a 5 yard ball and give it away in a dangerous area.

One of the most annoying things last night was the 20 pitching wedge technique crosses that simspon put in. I would rather him try to get pace on the ball and 5 of them make it into the area without them floating pieces of cr*p. Hangelaand had a field day even if our players had got to it they would have had to try and generate all of the power.

I see this place is awash with lynchmob vitriol and personal player vendettas again. So easy to lash out at the easiest targets.

Losing 5 out of 6 games on the trot is not down to individual players – there’s always going to be a weak link. We don’t carry any goal threat at the moment – so inevitably the opposition begin to take control of the games.

We should have spent in the summer – as JFA says – if only for the sake of squad morale – but I still think the problems stem from Pardew’s inability to settle on the right attacking formation to suit the players he has at his disposal.

Thanks…but I don’t claim to know a lot of football…barely play and haven’t been involved in coaching.

It’s just applying common sense to a situation and trying to make the best of what you have. We all know some players are limited and pardew needed more signings in the summer but that doesn’t mean he has to throw in the towel so easily. He can try his best to make players better or find ways to adapt them into a style.

We have 3 who arent comfortable with the ball at their feet….krul, willo, simmo (some other’s aren’t great but they aren’t afraid of holding the ball). We need to find a way to make them cut out long balls from 80/90% of their passes down to 40/50% or less to give the midfield a chance to create.

There’d all be an upgrade on the current negative defensive longball dinosaur. Who does he think he’s kidding locking out the fans from training as if his sessions are Barcelonaesque!

  • 189 boater // Dec 11, 2012 at 2:43 PM

BelfastMag – Arfa could only manage 70mins, we needed a goal and Shola was the most direct attacking option on the bench – it’s as simple as that.

To those people who are so bemused that Shola came on for Arfa as he’s not a like-for-like option.. it’s not as if the first system was working – we were losing and our goal had come from a moment of individual brilliance. We needed to try something different.

    Rotonda

It’s easy to see how quickly brendon rodgers has his liverpool side playing better, trying to keep the ball, get it out from the back, gave sterling (17, well 18 last sat, just like campbell for us) a chance and it paid off.

Pardew has had 2 years, I am now starting to think this is genuinely his style….long ball. I didn’t think that was his style but I am struggling to see why we keep doing it if he isn’t telling them.

If we were playing short and losing I could at least think he was trying to get them to pass the ball but they were struggling…this just looks poor tactics now.

  • 198 boater // Dec 11, 2012 at 2:53 PM

Nufc3 – Shola has a number of assists for both Cisse and Ba goals. You mean replicate the system which wasn’t working? I don’t like hoofball over 90mins but looking for an equaliser against a resolute defensive unit, who had thwarted our wide play all evening – you can hardly blame Pards for wanting to go direct.

  • 199 Transfer Sage // Dec 11, 2012 at 2:54 PM

For me pardew needs to get Ba back on the left until we sign somebody to do that job (marv said himself he likes a central role, did well there vs Wigan)

With our most creative player on the pitch for 70mins we failed to fashion a single clear chance for the strikers – plus there were 2 or 3 decent crosses (simpson and guti) sent in with minutes to go.

Ba and Cisse have scored a number of goals from Shola flick ons of long balls – I understand you would have liked to go another way, but it’s hardly the insane decision that people are making out.

personally think Ba is off in January! Not too unhappy with it to be honest, I appreciate his goals have been invaluable to us but I honestly think Cisse is more effective in the middle than ba! Ba shoots so often that tbh a few are bound to fly in, there was a couple of times last night he shot from 30 yards when he could of played in HBA or Cisse! Hes also a player that has shown no loyalty to any club he’s been at, dont see why he’d start with us! He was loved at west ham just as much as he is here! The fact that he throws his dummy out the pram whenever he is left out, subbed or has to play on the left doesnt help, also his link up play as a striker is pretty poor too! Also notice when he’s not on the pitch we play slightly better football, he runs towards our goal more than he does the oppositions! We could really do with a player that busts his ass getting into the box time after time! It sounds crazy because Ba is such a good player, but id love to see cisse given a chance up front with Ben Arfa just behind

We are going to have to limp along until the transfer window, with (unfortunately) Parsnip at the helm. I have no doubt there will be several purchases. It is not during the good times but the bad times when Parsnip needs to be judged. I personally think he does not have the credentials for the job in the first place, that accompanied by him being arrogant, stubborn and one of those people who likes the sound of his own voice does not endear him to me. However, we are stuck with him -he is I’m afraid “a tool”.
He is the football expert of the three in charge – with Ashley and Dastardly not having previous experience of the football world.
Parsnips recent statement that he persuaded the other two that last seasons team needed another year together has still got me thinking -what the hell is he talking about -did it mean not to split it up (for selling off individuals), or that it would progress further (ie would do better or equal 5th spot again). He clearly got that one wrong. His input or lack of input into the no buy summer gamble remains unknown -he must have agreed or disagreed with what occurred at the time or was an active participant of the decision.
Hi recent utterances about the hoardings at the training ground suggests to me the early stages of paranoia – but we are stuck with him and will just have to get on with what unfolds.

How do I put it. We don’t give him/he doesn’t get the opportunity. We never seem to get a through ball between the full backs and the centre halves for him to run on-to. It’s iether a long punt upfield or a high floated cross

  • 213 Munster Mag // Dec 11, 2012 at 3:44 PM

Ian, how are you? In fairness I think its fair to have some scepticism, even a lot of it at this point, without being branded one way or the other. The long and the short of it, apart from the short sighted support by fans given to Ashley for spnding anet 3mill in the summer, is that we have enough talent on the pitch / squad and should be doing better. I’m giving Pards time, but logic suggests it isnt going to happen. He has had loads of chances to do certain things but cant , or wont. I remain unconvinced that he knows what he wants to do although I was hugely encouraged by the Wigan game. Hiding behind the Cisse excuse a few weeeks ago and playing him on the right is mad. I wasnt impressed by his subs last night either. I live in hope that Pards will come through. Incidentally, if someone says they want that overrated Wigan manager as boss, I’ll get angry.

  • 214 Mister Tuff // Dec 11, 2012 at 3:49 PM

nufc @210 -you are probably right about him trying to garner favour with the fans (a requisite for the Toon job is to keep the fans onside so he is not daft in that respect). The advice not to sell (if true) has probably had the effect of reducing the sale price of our players -excluding Benny and Ba.

  • 219 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Dec 11, 2012 at 4:19 PM

Catchy….I’m back, so thought I’d answer with a bit more detail (and hopefully get more of a response than “I think you’re backing the wrong horse”. On that little point though, I see two horses in this race, the one we have (Pardew) or an unknown one, could be better, could be much much worse. I like to think for now, I am backing common sense – but time may prove me wrong.

I don’t feel I am being either naïve or arrogant. Where am I being either? Also, why does my thinking imply that I don’t feel the players have brains or feelings? Marveaux related?

He got picked for Thursday to prove he can do it week in, week out. He didn’t. Not all his fault, but he looked nowhere near as good as he did against Wigan (which incidentally, whilst he had a good game, I do think some have gone way overboard about just how good he really was – it was a promising performance). So why should he be offended? What exactly has he done to merit a place other than looking good in one game?

Please don’t think I’m bashing the lad, I am a big fan of his and want and feel he’ll do well, but he’s coming back from injury and has never had a run of PL games, yet now he’s our saviour? What was that about being naïve or ignorant?

As for slating the kids. I mentioned at the time I thought he handled that pretty poorly tbh, I also felt people jumped on his words a little strongly as well. I think we were all disappointed, not in the result, but the desire and fight. Do I expect the youth to wipe the floor in EL away? No, but I do expect them to be trying to make an impression and give it their all, which they didn’t. They should go out on loan, whether we can or not due to squad size is a different matter. What Pardew said wasn’t wrong, but it was handled poorly. I don’t think he was laying all blame on the kids as you and some others are saying.

Already touched on my fence sitting.

We’re agreed on Transfers to some extent, he should have been backed by Ashley in the summer and the only thing he could have done was quit, not something that I would agree with. As for getting the current crop to play better, I think there are multiple problems. I enjoyed last seasons football for the majority (I honestly did) and who was behind that? You guessed it, your mate Alan. He may not be a great technical, passing coach, but he is far from the monster of a coach as you portray him. Do I love his style? Nope. Do I hate it? At times? Do I think he’s hindered by some of the players at his disposal? Sure do. So where does that leave my opinion on Pardew? I have faith, but need to see it. That requires time, which is what I have said all along.

New tactics behind the boarding weren’t coming in to play last night ffs.1 training session? Get real. New players? Who?

Don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t happy with last nights subs, not at all, but that isn’t enough for me to want to change managers.

What are your thoughts on why we played so differently in the Wigan and Fulham games? Do you think Pardew has told them to not press the opposition? To not offer their team mates options? To make stupid passes and lose possession? No, those are traits of players lacking in confidence, partly down to Pardew, but not solely.

believe it or not, we are in a relegation battle right now , in the last 5 weeks most of our games have been 6 pointers, we took points of wiggan, but IMO with 10 men they where the better team, the others , we were second best and did not deserve anything from them

i think this weekend, we will pay for them losing to man u, tevez will start, and he will get a hatrick

in defence we are a shambles and MF is none existant we have on paper 2 of the best CF in the prem, but both need service

my own opinion is, i dont see another point coming before jan, simply because every week we expect a change somewhere, but every week its the same, even if they play behind closed doors, boarded up training, that was a joke, he set his intentions out on thursday by playing marv, we new nothing would change,
jan will come, new players will come by feb they wont have settled in and will struggle,,to keep us up

Was a tough game last night and thought we deserved more. It could be said Pardew had alot of luck last season and maybe it could be said his luck is all bad this season.
The mental “cos I’m rich” Balotelli, Tevez, Aguero, Silva, Toure, Dzeko, Nasri, Kompany (if fit) will prove tougher competition, can’t wait.

Beattie…There are quite a few goodies out there, than only make me smile when applied to the blog.

Indian…It certainly was, but sometimes to get thoughts out there it takes more than “Everything will be fine”, “Pardew out” or “so and so is sh*t”.

  • 230 colwell // Dec 11, 2012 at 4:34 PM

Ba for Remy? Hell yeah, Remy is everything we have been crying out for a striker with bags of pace and skill. He would complement Cisse no end and keep every defense back knowing he will burn away from them.

We are easy to defend against because of our lack of pace, With Cabaye,Anita and HBA banging balls over the top Remy would be in his element.

I also think/hope after Jan we won’t see much more of Willo again. We all know he isn’t good enough for the Prem and his costly mistakes, poor ball control, lack of pace and presence at the back no doubt he’ll be the one dropped.

  • 231 Beattie25 // Dec 11, 2012 at 4:35 PM

I have always been a realist.

The wind is an unpredictable mistress so we need to adjust the sails or else we may sink.

Brining in new players is not guarenteed to have any impact whatsoever.

Bringing in a new manager, whilst drastic, certainly will have an effect.

Whether that be a positive/negative effect i’ll leave up to the pessimists/optimists to fight.

It is funny how optimism turns quicly into pessimism and vice versa.

The pessimists see a optimistic future without Pardew, the optimists sees a pessimistic future without Pardew, the realists know that something has to change.

  • 232 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Dec 11, 2012 at 4:36 PM

Mactoon…Isn’t it that he was 100% lucky this year but just getting what he deserves this year, i.e. he has been found out? :)

It was a tough game and was always going to be. There is a reason why our record there isn’t great and it’s not all down to Pardew.

Certainly not looking forward to the City game, I’ll try and keep my optimist “well, you never know” comments to myself.

  • 233 Beattie25 // Dec 11, 2012 at 4:38 PM

My god, I am a modern day philosipher.

Also Remy on the left, Benny on he right and Cisse in the middle is exactly what we need.

However I think we may go for a Carlton Cole type player. Not pessimistic, just a realist.

  • 234 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Dec 11, 2012 at 4:42 PM

Beattie….I think you may be guilty or over symplifying there.

I don’t see a pessimistic future without Pardew, just an unknown one. I would see that as being a realist in this case.

Would have Martinez in a heartbeat.

Over rated you’re having a laugh. Double promotions with Swansea and how he’s kept Wigan up year after year on an absolute shoestring budget with nothing to spend with the smallest EPL crowds defies belief.

Twice at Wigan, hes’s been in the situation Pardew was with Charlton and twice he’s somehow got them out of it.

Plus he’s never resorted to hoofing it even with inferior players and never ever made excuses. I think with a bigger club and some money he would be phenomenal.

  • 240 Beattie25 // Dec 11, 2012 at 4:47 PM

Seriously though, i’ve flirted with the idea and posted his name a few times, but what about the posibility of Laurent Blanc?

Do people not think he would come to us?

Yeah that little shit Nasri got the better of him but he is a great young manager, had France playing good football, did amazing at Bordeaux, brought Ben Arfa back into the fold and is currently a free agent.

Who else would cost zero in terms of compensation and be able to get the best out of our French players?

If Mike Ashley is truthfully going to invest into new players then what better way than to combine Blanc and Carrs knowledge of French football and truly bring an attractive quality to our fteam rather than bring Carroll back?

If Blanc came you could guarantee players would want to come and most would want to stay. Also he was a CB and would know how to fix our defence.

i have not got lots of time to write a long reply,,

but on marv v jonas or a few others,, you say he has to prove himself first
what i will say is that there are a no of players not proving themselfs and should be benched to let players like marv abied ferg have a run in the team,, its hard for any player to think i have to really impress in one game just to get a shot,
    for me, thats wrong,

the difference between the 2 games, fulham had 11 men, and we played at home, i would have it a guess that pardew would feel more preasure from the crowd, if they did not press

but i feel that even against 10 men, we got out played many times, i felt for 30 mins there was an improvent, pressing only, i felt against 10 men, we should have been camped in there half,,

there a team fighting relegation, every year, we should be beating them with 11 men and slautering them with 10 esp seeing as they played so open against us,, that breeds confidence

  • 249 foggonridiculous // Dec 11, 2012 at 4:59 PM

    That’s football for you:

…some say: “try another way” so it was right to bring on Shola
….others say the only creativity was coming from Ben Arfa and with Cabaye injured so introducing Marveaux may have sparked something.

    You pays your money….

To me the team just don’t LOOK right. The team spirit that was the platform for last year’s over-achievements no longer seems to be there.

Whether that’s because of stuff behind the scenes pre-season like banning Cisse from the Olympics and Cabaye’s pal Debuchy not arriving we can only speculate on.

…maybe players have been carrying injuries
….maybe Cabaye and others have realised that Mr. Strop Direct and Derek I-am-balls are full of the brown stuff…who knows?

There were enormous gaps in the middle of the park last night and that wasn’t all down to Santon walking back from his forward runs (I like Santon… but for me jogging back is the bare minimum).

Coloccini hasn’t been the same since Pardew decided to liken him to Bobby Moore and with Tiote a shadow of the player we thought he was, we have developed a distinctly soft under-belly

The two best things for me about last night were Hatem’s moment of brilliance (Schwarzer probably still doesn’t believe it) and the small consolation that we didn’t completely collapse second half like last season.

Nevertheless basic stuff like defending set pieces and player movement to give the man with the ball options are just not happening.

I would like to see the originally under-appreciated Perchinho shore up the middle of the park with Anita/Marveaux tried alongside him to try and get back something along the lines of what we had with the Cabaye/Tiote axis last season. Restoring Cisse to the front (anyway remember Jon Dahl Tommasson sinking without trace after being similarly played out of position) is essential .. we need him back firing on all cylinders especially if the continually rumoured departure of Ba happens.

…..also the implementation of the much trumpeted structured transfer policy in the window… you know the one where we identify the areas to strengthen and have a realistic list of targets and alternatives prepared for when I-am-balls shoots his mouth off and upsets the club we were hoping to be buying from….

    … maybe…

…and maybe I’ll see Mr Strop Direct fly a complete circuit around SJP!

  • 250 Beattie25 // Dec 11, 2012 at 5:00 PM

    Ibiza

My realist perception has often caused friction on the blog until one day (Norwich at home last season) I recieved so much abuse I left thinking I truly was as people branded me ‘a neggar’.

I returned and brought with me a new optimistic vibe that was truly shattered on 31st August 2012 and after hibernating I have decided to be who I truly am, a realist.

The problem is is that perception is truly independent to each individual so my reality is different from everyone else.

In my honest opinion I truely believe that financially we have stability, in terms of players we have improved in the past 2 years but tactically we are so far short of hitting our true potential that it saddens me greatly.

I have always been outspoken in terms of my disiking of Pardews methods but I hoped that he could cement another top 10 finish this season and then potentially be replaced with a manager of significanty more quality and then BOOM, an 8 year contract.

In reality we are not going to fire Pardew. Instead scapegoats will be made, players criticised and moved on, and the whole process started again.

The only thing that can really change is the day Mike Ashley either leaves the club or starts chasing success.

Until that day I see a repetition of 2009-2012.

So for me, the fans should rise up and take inspiration from the movements of old to make real change.

Until that day we will have to make do with Pardew, Llambias and Ashley milking us all, bullshitting and treating us like the fools we obviously are.

Take for example the current plight of the British economy. David Cameron could fire George Osbourne but the next person (unless we are lucky and that person is amazing) still would have limited ability to change the fortunes of the nation with the small amount at his/her disposal.

To make real change you have to cut the head of the snake.

  • 251 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Dec 11, 2012 at 5:01 PM

Catchy…Well it seems we’re on different sides of the fence :)

I wasn’t saying that others have performed well, but over time they have proved their worth more than Marveaux. I’m not even saying he needs to do it one game, but that one good game doesn’t give him entitlement to the spot. He will be given chances and the future looks good for him, but is he the man we need right now, or maybe it should be is he constantly better? Jury is out and if you think rationally about it, I think you would agree…at least to some extent. Marveaux is good in theory, but that is all it is at this point.

Wigan….We were pressing, showing good movement, etc before they went down to 10 men, in fact, it was partly down to the way we were playing that he got the red card. That is what the rules are and we played well. Do you not think your trying to prove your point a little too much here? Imo it comes across that you can’t be objective.

Anyway, it seems your busy, so, until next time.

Beattie…No idea if Blanc would come tbh, nor do I know enough about him really. Makes sense as far as the French connection aspect is concerned though, didn’t he have problems controlling the players though?

As for fixing defense, perhaps a better defense coach is needed rather than manager? Or better still, better defenders!

  • 255 Beattie25 // Dec 11, 2012 at 5:11 PM

We have a world class midfield once Tiote pulls his finger out and Cabaye comes back fit.

Another attacking fullback would balance out the team and we saw the pressure we put on Fulham last night.

When that kind of pressure is put on, there is no need to question Santons defensive ability.

Santon is only dodgy when we are not pressurising teams high up the pitch. Even when Fulham counter attacked it was hoof ball that due to the poor central partnership of Colo and Willo, worked wonders.

If we had Anita and Tiote sitting deep, Colo and Douglas playing out from the back, Santon and Debuchy pressing high up the pitch, Cabaye creating opportunities, Remy and Ben Arfa pulling teams in and out and Cisse feeding of opportunities we could seriously have one of the best teams in the PL.

    It is not rocket science.

  • 257 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Dec 11, 2012 at 5:12 PM

Beattie….Fair enough mate. You know my feelings on Pardew, I think he’s okay, not terrible nor fantastic.

Any manager will be limited to what they can achieve by their boss, in this case, Ashley. I do have some faith in the plan, but also not naive enough to think that it will definitely work or even that it’s completely genuine. In reality, it’s probably a good model, but one that great success is limited under. From relegation fodder, that was seen as improvement.

Can’t really answer any more on it at this point, the middle of the season. If at the end of this year, we haven’t gotten any new players and are fighting the wrong end of the table, then I’d probably agree with you and I’d still maintain it’s more to do with the owner than the manager.

Terms like optimist, pessimist (or neggar) or realist are thrown around on here in such a black or white way, something we’re all guilty of, when in reality I don’t think it’s often possible to be solely one of those. There will be things to be optimistic about, some to be worried about and then others where you take a philosophical approach. It’s what makes us human. All we can do is say what we feel, but it’s important for us all to try and keep an open mind – difficult I know.

Am I the only one who thinks we played quite well last night? Hit the post twice (one offside addmittedly), twice cleared off the line and 2 horrendously avoidable goals. Even though we lost I really enjoyed the match. The players and definitely playing along the ground more which is good to see. The only problem is we dont have someone who makes the space in the final third to pick up the ball and deliver a pass or shot (Cabaye needed). You could see the improvement vs Stoke which was heartbreaking, paid dividends vs Wigan and were entertaining last night albeit not decisive. Last 3 games (excluding EL) have been a step in the right direction. I for one am optimistic. (horrible fixtures coming up though)

  • 274 Tsunki // Dec 11, 2012 at 5:35 PM

Ha ha Beattie its not far off that’s for sure. Madness is my middle name. Or is it Mostyn?

I remember saying not long back I thought Cabaye wasn’t right but even when not on form he still makes a big difference to the team ( or such like ) and so it has proved, an op on one side of the groin followed by one on the other to avoid exacerbating a weakness. Just a bit of told you so for whoever it was that I was talking rubbish (on that particular point anyway). Getting Cabaye back will affect the shape, play and morale of the team. I am not sure though our ‘new signings’ will magically bullet us up the table as some seem to wishfully think. The fixing has to be done with the current squad and pardew needs to work out how quick to use what he has and first of all stop conceding goals. This high line constant pushing lark has to stop because we don’t have the defensive unit to cope with the gap between thrm and the half way line. Get the defenders back, let the am’s and forwards worry about creating opportunities and stop trying to showcase santon and simmo as flying FB’s because they are not good at it at all. Same old problems.

Ibizatoon – I agree. Anita and Cisse seemed like the only players really trying to close down the opposition. Off the ball we were disappointing but on the ball I thought we were promising as we have been since our awful awful display against Southampton. I’m a pro-Pardew for the fact that (in my opinion) stability is key to success. The only problem I have is the fact he’s sucking up to Ba’s demands. I mean why change a working formula? The last third of last season (West Brom away springs to mind) we were lethal. Ba may not have liked playing LW but he wasn’t doing badly there. I just hate that Cisse is being wasted RW, the poor lad is trying his hardest but the position doesn’t suit him at all.

  • 280 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Dec 11, 2012 at 5:46 PM

Always…Ah yes, the easy points – forgot about those :) I’m not too worried either, but I do understand why some fans are, it’s just their solutions I have a problem with.

Jamie….The whole Ba thing is a mess. I get both sides of it, he’s the in form ST so should lead the line, he can play on the LW and was close to scoring, etc etc. Truth is, they don’t both need to be starting each game….just play one at a time! It also gives us one of them on the bench to come on and make a difference. Last night, if it has been Cisse or Ba coming on for Arfa, it would have been a lot better than Shola.

Now Marv is fit and seemingly up for it, I’d like to see something along these lines.

    ————–Krul—————
    Simmo–Willo-Colo–Santon
    ———–Guti–Tiote———-
    ——-HBA–Anita–Marv—-
    ———-Cisse or Ba———–

Once Cabaye is back, Anita in to DM and Cabaye with Benny and Marv. Well, something like that anyway. Having Obertan back will give us some options to, which will be welcomed.

I forgot to add, that it is my opinion, that Guti becomes the man to be dropped when all players are fit and in form. It’s sad, but if we’re firing on all cylinders, it’s his role that is easiest to replace. His work ethic will be missed though.

  • 286 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Dec 11, 2012 at 5:55 PM

83….I quite like Perch in that position, not sure he outs Guti for me though. Despite his current form, he is vice captain for a reason.

  • 287 Jamiemac // Dec 11, 2012 at 5:56 PM

Ibizatoon – I think Cisse either has to be lone striker or nowhere so I agree with you there. Ba showed he is capable of playing LW so my team with what’s available at the moment would probably be:

    ————–Krul————
    Simmo-Willo-Colo-Santon
    ——–Tiote—Anita
    ————-Marv————
    Benny—–Cisse——–Ba

I don’t think Guti is playing as bad as most people are making out but I agree with most that’s it’s probably worth giving Marv a shot since we can’t go much worse than we are currently. Obertan being back is a bonus because of the pace he offers. My temper is running out on Willo, I’ve never been one to bash him but there’s just mistake after mistake week in week out! The only problem is there’s nobody there challenging him!! Perch and Simmo have shown they aren’t physical enough to play there. It will be interesting to see how Curtis Good gets along tonight if he plays. Desperate need for a CB in January.

    Firesale!

Spread the word – we are having a firesale in January :-) whoever makes the first buy will get Willo for free.

I have hijacked the Venga Bus and first stop is London where we’ll try to sell Simmo. Everyone beside Benny is up for graps!

Pards,MA and DL will join the Venga Bus and if you haven’t guess it one of the lucky buyers will have the opportunity pick one of them as an extra prize :-)

Lets get the show on the road!

  • 289 Ian Toon // Dec 11, 2012 at 6:01 PM

Ibiza- In flicking through earlier posts I was horrified to read another poster (Munster) say that you had admitted an error! Please tell me this is not true. It would have me doubting my conviction that whilst things could get worse ( so fasten your seat belt) before they get better we will still will finish in the top half. Ashley nickel and dimming will be replaced by Pardew’s wheeling and dealing. What makes me convinced that WE WILL NOT BE RELEGATED is that Ashley and indeed Pardew have so much at stake. It would cost Ashley a small fortune and setback his 5 year plan with all the turmoil
of release clauses in players contracts. Also from a cash flow perspective impact on any future sale of the club. For Pardew having been a contender, whether he was to subsequently gain promotion at the first attempt from the Championship; he would be further tarred with the Rotonda claim of falling off his perch in the second year and simply perpetuate the myth. The pair will move heaven and earth to avoid the ignominy. Rest assured we will not be relegated. Don’t let me read of you admitting to error again you rocked my world. I thought it was an imposter.
P.S. I assume in the event of relegation you would take a pay cut from Ed as well. So your incentivised and rowing in the same direction. I can breath easily.
Till the next time repeat after me ” We are staying up, we are staying up”.

    ———-–Tiote——Anita———
    ——————-Cabs—————
    Benny—–——Cisse——–Remy

  • 291 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Dec 11, 2012 at 6:07 PM

Jamie…You wont see me grumbling at that line up. Ba has said he isn’t happy on the left, so I’d imagine if it was week in, week out, then he’d be gone pretty soon and whilst I really like Cisse, I think fans are too quick to dismiss Ba. It’s not as simple as sell Ba, play Cisse alone and all will be hunky dory imo.

Guti still has a role, but is is much different that the one he had and people need to accept that and stop piling all of this rubbish on him.

Willo is what he is. He is frustrating, but he’s also a £1m CB from Portsmouth. All things considered it was a good buy, just not the one we want as one of our first choice CB’s (considering Taylor is usually out of action. Any anger I have towards Willo is quickly redirected towards Ashley. It’s be like buying a Skoda and then being angry it doesn’t drive like a Ferrari, he can only do what he can do.

  • 292 Tsunki // Dec 11, 2012 at 6:09 PM

Ibiza @286 thats just Sky wishful thinking policy. They are organisationally committed to hating us. I think they have a charter or something that covers it.

Anyway I wasnt going to the City match I was treating a relative to a top flight game but I am damn well going so I bought a ticket for £40. So Beattie is right I am off me trolley. But I will cheer the lads on gladly – now is the time.

Jesper….Buy a player and get Willo, plus one of the wonderful trio free? Not sure you’re giving people the right incentives here :)

Ian…Fear not. What I said i was wrong about is how we’d cope without more summer investment. Did I think we’d be 14th and so close to the bottom 3? Nope, i was wrong. Doesn’t mean I was or am wrong with the end game, Ashley or even Pardew. I still have my faith, but we must take our lumps as I hope people will when we don’t get relegated ;)

Although I can tell you now, if we don’t get relegated it’ll all be down to luck.

What’s this about a pay cut? Oh the outrage!

  • 294 Ian Toon // Dec 11, 2012 at 6:12 PM

Jesper- if Pardew is smart he will use our ” situation” to his and the teams advantage. He could well adopt a Harry Redknapp wheeler dealer mantle. Great opportunity to get rid of dead wood and bring in a number of new much needed players to add depth to the squad.
Just think you could take your daily idiom to a new level. There would be endless possibilities. Already Ibiza is dusting down his notes on the if’s and but’s of the window. It’s not going to be a miserable winter on here!

    From a previous thread:

I’ve read many a debate on this blog over the years without commenting but recently can’t hold back any longer. I find it almost amusing how in the past those who rightfully criticised MA, backing up there arguments with examples from the past were often called neggers, mackems and even blamed for poor results. Moreover, the ‘anti’ashleys’ were told they can’t really support NUFC if they don’t support MA and his #5 year plan’.

In fact, if I remember correctly Rotanda Heights was one of the self-affirmed ‘possers’ of the blog who along with Bills and Davybtoon etc. vehemenently defended all things Ashley. Yet now he proclaims:

‘You can still support your team but recognise a very limited, stubborn and at times just plain loopy manager.’

I do agree with this to some extent but the above adverbs are more aptly suited to our owner not our manager. Mr Ashley seems immune from the blame on this blog, and the realists are all but gone (AngryMan anyone?) have turned their ffrustration onto Llambias or Pardew. Yes both are limited, both are frustrating but the real problem at this club is Mike Ashley and fans need to open their eyes to the possibillity of another relegation at the hands of an incapable, callous and conemptful businessman. It is plain and simple now that MA has taken this club backwards since he took over and before any junior accountants point towards finances, I DON’T CARE, my interest is football and it is ludicrous to suggest that as a fan of my local football club that i am in debt to a billionairre. Also, be wary of the myth that Mike ‘saved’ us from administration-this is simply untrue and absolutely no evidence is in existence to back it up.

Ibiza – Hmm yeah only Pardew and Ba know the full situation. If its a categorical no that Ba can’t play LW then I’d be happy benching Cisse, putting Ba striker and maybe Obertan and Benny swapping wings but not sure if Obertan would be better use as an impact sub.

Regards to Guti – I 100% agree, he’s going a good job defensively for us covering Santon a lot and he also wins us a hell of a lot of free kicks – it’s just a shame we’re hopeless from set plays, 1 goal from set plays for 2 seasons is awful. I mean if we had won a couple more games I wouldn’t complain with him starting but since we’re losing lots due mainly to uncreativity it would make sense in a way just to try Marv for a few games to see if that helps.

Willo was a great buy and he actually had a number of good games last season, this season his lack of pace is being exploited. I’d be happy with him as a second back up but as a starter it worries me going into games.

  • 300 Super Magpie // Dec 11, 2012 at 6:20 PM

I don’t get why so many people on here want Martinez. Do you understand how long it would take for him to implement his style of football into our team. It would be exactly the same as it is now, and people would be calling for his head because of it. Yes, he’s done well at Wigan but has he really ever been under pressure before? Nope.
He’d be under immense pressure if he came here as soon as he stepped through the door.

Evening sports fans, I was going to wait until we went on a winning run b4 I posted but with my failing health my ego couldn’t take the strain…..good to see some old posters back….though the ones who changed their names and adopted new pseudonyms to pretend they had actually vacated the blogosphere now seem to have no shame in reverting back to their old personas – amazing what a relegation fight can do! Btw..I miss old dudtitspunc….a classy poster he was…never saw him since he disgraced himself after JimmyMag’s death.
I’m surprised IanT thinks it’s obvious MA will spend the cash come January…..I expect horsetrading and not very much capital spending….problem is who will rid us of Williamson and co.?? Even Tiote looks like a busted flush now…so it could be painful in january with one of top ‘purples’ going “under the best owner we have ever had”
Youngsters won’t save us, if they are going to be of the standard I witnessed in Bordeaux last week!! Such a shame our masterplan doesn’t involve experienced proven quality…it could save Mike another fortune in the longrun.

My gut feeling is that the club gave in to Ba to put him in the shop window for selling.

I think offers for Mr T should be listened to as his crazy fool tackling is becoming too costly a player we can now manage without.

Simmo out, willo should be, guti sad but should be benched.

Squad overhaul needed or its hello championship and a purples fire sale.

Gut feeling – hope i’m wrong.

  • 309 nufc90 // Dec 11, 2012 at 6:30 PM

I’d sell Ba if it meant we could get a LW come ST type player. Remy would be good as he’s played both positions.

Definitely sign Diame for 3.5m would be perfect. He said he only thinks he’ll be injured for 3weeks too so perfect timing.

And 100% MUST sign a CB not sure who though just an improvement on what we have. Thought Simpson was decent last night just terrible crossing. Debuchy is having a terrible season for Lille (maybe because he didn’t get his move) so we might be able to bring him in cheap if Simpson goes.

  • 310 Ian Toon // Dec 11, 2012 at 6:31 PM

Solano- I sincerely hope you are not unwell. Your observations display a razor sharp mind so not a lot appears to have changed. There will doubtless be a lot of out front horse trading and behind the scenes manipulation. One thing I think we might agree on is that Ashley cannot afford relegation.

  • 311 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Dec 11, 2012 at 6:31 PM

Solano…Hello there. Cupid is a miss on here, despite the bad feeling from that day.

January will be extremely telling one way or another, I guess we’ll pick this conversation up after the window. It would make sense for him to invest, but since when did sense count for much where Newcastle or Ashley is concerned?

Hope you’re failing health isn’t too serious.

Jesper….Bacon and trusting Sky are two things I hold dearly to me. It’s been a tough old week.

  • 312 Jamiemac // Dec 11, 2012 at 6:33 PM

Ibiza – I enjoy having reasonable debates on how the team might be able to improve. These Catchy’s/Check’s etc blaming Pardew I can see where they are coming from but I would bet large amounts that a change of manager would have no positive effects for our club. Pardew has a hell of a large contract and I’m willing to give him time to implement his full plan.

  • 313 nick_9 // Dec 11, 2012 at 6:34 PM

LargeSadMenace on the contrary. I have seen many posts criticizing Ashley for being unambitious in the window. The fact Pardew had to ask Mike to keep the squad together speaks volumes, what type of owner/chairman would have to be persuaded to keep a squad together?

On a different note i am wondering what are all your opinions on standing at the grounds? Who’s against or in favour? Personally i am in favour of the safe standing campaign and having read how the Hillsborough group are dead against it im a little unsure why? Was Hillsborough not a crush from overcrowding and metal fencing at the front of the stand? The german leagues, lower league football here in the uk and other sports such as Rugby all have standing areas. We have concerts were everybody stands so why not at football? Every row of seats has a sort of Bannister railing to avoid falling in the row infront, as it stands now i nearly always end up a few rows infront when i celebrate and not to mention when people are squeezing past you its very tight and they nearly end up tripping. The premier league are against it mainly because of crowd control and we are now seeing a different audience in mothers and kids at games from sitting down. Firstly nobody is being forced to sit where they are so nobody would have to be in a standing area. Secondly crowd control is hard enough as it is anyway with current talk of getting nets around the pitch, i think their issue is the fans who stand are more vocal and may swear or shout abuse etc. If the referee gets a decision wrong or we go behind that is pretty much what happens anyway.

Anyone with me or think i am being naive? or missing something?

  • 314 Super Magpie // Dec 11, 2012 at 6:35 PM

    On last night.

Sloppy goals once again. We are making far too many mistakes. Colo was at fault for both goals as was Willo partly for turning away from the ball which he does far too often. ( He has cost us own goals often by doing this). Tiote was also disappointing for giving away the needless FK leading upto the goal. Anita was MOTM for me, followed by Krul and HBA. Guti seemed lost as usual and is looking more out of depth by each game. Simpson got into good positions but not once did he put in a decent cross. So disappointing…

One thing that is really annoying me is the fact awful players are playing well against us- Sidwell, Rodallega, Jones, Jerome and Diabate have all ripped us apart and are all poor players. This shows how poor we have been.

The fight and determination in our team is a shadow of last season. It took a goal out of nothing for us to equalise and from then we dominated. Then we go and concede another set piece and go flat again. I can also understand Pardew taking HBA off yesterday but for Shola instead of Marveaux? He may not have the players but surely it would be logical to swap creativity for creativity instead of creativity for hoofball?

Also, even if we do buy in January. There is no guarantee that we will suddenly shoot up the table. We are in a relegation battle at the moment and will be in it past the new year unless we pull off a few miracles in the next few games. Worrying times indeed.

Why cant we have what the Germans have? They can stand in totally safe surroundings and the atmosphere is 10 times better than ours! Long gone are the days when the black n white army made so much noise that you came out with a buzz in your ears! I kid you not……….the atmosphere was as much about matchday as the game itself! Safe standing is the only way that the atmosphere will come back and I am not going back until it does and this is someone whos first match was in 1979 and was a regular in the corner, standing on the barriers to lead the crowd, so its not a decision made lightly!

Blaydon…Also a good point and I imagine it will depend on the player. I was just pointing out it’s not a forgone conclusion that no one will want to come now, I believe far from it. But clearly there will be better options than us this season, but there are many factors for players to consider other than their league position – not sure if that helps us or not really :)

Ian…..I have an image of them to and they are indeed mental :) Only playing people, couldn’t help myself. You’re clearly all totally sane and normal. Ha.

  • 338 Ian Toon // Dec 11, 2012 at 7:03 PM

Blaydon– good point but we are where we are. There will be players who can improve the side particularly defensively that will be willing to join us. The manager has to sell his vision of the club going forward. DL , Pardew will recognise the need for fresh blood.

toonicle…Sorry to bring even more bad news, but it’s also reported that Ba and his agents get 50% of the release clause – so that’s £3.5m in the bank for the club – not looking so good really, if we can keep him, we should imo.

A long term contract at 70 k a week plus for a player with a “ticking time bomb” of a knee. Not a gamble I’d readily make, even with Ash’s money.

If we have to sell a purple, that was IF, then sadly it’ll need to be one to generate some funds or what is the point? £35m I could understand, but £3.5m? Nah thanks.

Mental to get rid of Pardew, who will work under this regime only Pardew would let them make him look like a complete twat time and again. He must be pissed off as the rest of us. But has to accept he will never get a bigger club in a million years.

  • 352 willowdalerez // Dec 11, 2012 at 7:17 PM

Couple of things… As I had expected the 2nd half was much better than the 1st not good enough but it shows reason for optimism… Benny, Tiote and Santon all are back from injury and it takes a game or two to get back to form and Benny in particular only shined in the second half. Also on the positive side Pards will get new players in as I agree with some others on here that Ashley will want to invest some to salavage his investment (he won’t want to go down again).

Bad news is noe of that is likely to be enough to salvage many points in the next few matches against hard teams (unless Jonas and Collo find their old form and Willo and Simmo find form… they seem to have misplaced it after turning pro)!

I’m not expecting many points until mid January as our injured players get back to form and new acquisitions meld with the squad. That said enough of the doom and gloom we are NOT going down… Oh and StuartNo9 are you a sunderland wanker because you would think so from the posts you make on here!

Ian….I only made the comment as you come across as the most unlikely hooligan on here, glad you got a smile out of it in these dark dark times :) I bet the buzz was truly amazing, you lucky hooligan you (this new name may stick, just warning you).

Jimmy…If it is £70k a week, and depending on the length of the contract, I might agree. But, for £3.5m, wouldn’t we be best keeping him and his goals and letting him go on a free? Where can we get a 10-20 goal a season ST for £3.5m? I just don’t get why people want him out. Rotate him and Cisse, if he doesn’t like that then he’ll go, but let’s not force him out. Madness imo.

  • 354 Billythefish // Dec 11, 2012 at 7:20 PM

Jimmy @346- Gotta agree with you there.

  • 360 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Dec 11, 2012 at 7:26 PM

I’m backing our gaffer to get it right, he was let down in the summer with a lack of investment, it isn’t surprising that he has trying to make a best of a bad situation and doesn’t criticise his bosses on TV cameras, he is probably as frustrated as the rest of us.

Bet your bottom dollar that he is banging on Del’s office door demanding that we don’t make the same mistakes again.

With the players we currently have it just seems that we may not have as good a team as we once thought. Tiote has been looking like a sub par player for too long this season and if there is any player who is not deserving of a place in this side it is him.

Ba’s selfishness has cost us more times than it’s saved us this season, Colo has been poor since Liverpool, and Cisse hasn’t been the same player this season.

Is Pardew to blame for this in entirety? No, but he does have responsibility in this regard. Tactically he is starting to get it right, he has been let down by individuals.

It is clear that Willo is not good enough as hard as he works, Simmo has also been a hard worker but doesn’t have the ability going forward. Also someone needs to take Santon and explain the need for positioning himself properly, but he is young and will learn his trade.

In short, we haven’t been good enough, we haven’t worked hard enough and our shortcomings are being dreadfully exposed.

Do I believe in this manager, in this team? Damn right I do. Do I think they will get the backing they need from the owners? Not sure any more, but if there is anyone at fault for what is wrong at the minute it is them. Not Pardew.

  • 361 jimmysmith // Dec 11, 2012 at 7:26 PM

Ibiza, I tend to agree, keep him until his present contract runs down and if someone wants to activate the release clause then so be it. But no long term contract at 70 k plus. In truth, we’ve already had great value out of a very good player, but that knee and those demands, a bridge too far to my mind.

  • 362 willowdalerez // Dec 11, 2012 at 7:27 PM

Couple of things – The positive:

    1. Team played better in 2nd half (as expected with multiple players just back from injury). Tiote and Santon looked to be finding their form and Benny was magic. It was not good enough but it is reason for optimism.

    2. I agree with some others on here that we will not go down so enough with the doom and gloom. Pards must be looking to make acquisitions and Ashley must be willing to open the purse a little to save his investment (going down again guts him financially and he’s all about business.

The negative – New players in and injured players back will take some time to find form and gel as a squad so unless Jonas and Collo find a shadow of their old form and Willo and Simpson find the form they misplaced when they turned pro don’t look for us to pick up many points over the next 4 league matches ;-(

@Ian Toon – Do you or have you ever worked for mgmt? You are just too positive to believe!

@StuartNo9 – Are you from Sunderland?

  • 363 toonicle // Dec 11, 2012 at 7:28 PM

Ibiza- Honestly I don’t think rotating is going to work. Pardew is afraid of doing anything to upset Ba, and as long as that continues he’s gonna keep trying to play him and Cisse together with the end result being what we are seeing now. I say just rip the bandaid off as the saying goes and send him on his way in January with the hope that it gives Cisse confidence to start firing em in again.

Actually, that we are seemingly prepared to offer Ba a long term big money deal is surely a sign that the board are indeed ready to spend. Problem is perhaps more the January market. Not a lot of bargains around, could well prove too bitter a pill for them to swallow when push comes to shove.

Ibiza….Cheers mate! Yer a canny lad!lol On the team at the moment I have been through this soooooo many times over the years it gets quite amusing on here reading the comments. Although our situation is no laughing matter and we all want better, some on here need lessons on football support! If you think this is bad try the scenario of with 3 (yes three) games left and 4-1 away to Derby County and sitting in the relegation zone in the old 2nd Division. I was behind the goal at the baseball ground that day and was also at the following match at home to Portsmouth and the last match away to Leicester City. The fact is we wouldn’t have had a club if we had lost any of the last two games. This was real squeeky bum time and ive never seen or heard a noise like the backing we gave the team!We saved the team and they need us now!

  • 376 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Dec 11, 2012 at 7:39 PM

    Kevy

Well I do agree with you that we should be looking for alternative CBs, Willo isn’t good enough to be a first team CB but the issue with Ba is different. I know Ba is definitely good enough to play for us but I think his selfishness in the final third is costing us momentum and fluidity.

I don’t have the stats but I would hazard a guess that his shots/goal ratio is shocking, he takes so many bloody shots that he is bound to score sometimes and his link up play with Cisse is gash, he never gets his head up to look for a pass.

  • 377 Tinman // Dec 11, 2012 at 7:40 PM

I dont often post, but always read this blog and usually read all of the comments.

Our defence is shocking at the moment, Krul looks shaky but that has to be understood; he cant have any confidence in his defence! Simpson is a poor player, his poxy floaty crosses are good for nothing and will be cleaned up by a decent defence all game every game. Williamson is supposed to be a big strong bloke, yet he doesnt win his fair share of headers and he is a shocking footballer, he cant control a ball, make a pass or read a pass. Captain Colo is an excellent defender, one of the most skillful I have seen and he reads the game very well. But he is also very poor in the air for a centre half, ideally he needs a ball winner like Shawcross beside him. Santon is fantastic, one of our best players.

Solution – Bring in a RB and a CB who will dominate in the air. Perch has shown he can cover RB and CB. I dont expect many people to agree with this but get rid of Steven Taylor, if our club works on a tight wage system then there is no point in keeping an easily replaceable player who is constantly on the bench.

    Other Problems
    - Unfortunately Jonas offers literally nothing in a game, he had one of his better games last night and was still terrible. People say Marveaux goes missing in games? Jonas doesnt even turn op anymore. Play Bigi or Marv in there untill Cabs is back.
    - Tiote has been poor this season and was absolutely shocking last night yet he gets picked week after week. Why reward poor performances? Yes he is best in that position, maybe he is getting cocky and thinks it doesnt matter how well he plays, he will still get picked.
    - Stop playing strikers on the wing. Last season it was Ba, this season its Cisse. Two fantastic players unfairly being made too look shit. Imagine if we were losing games when Ba suddenly stopped scoring last season, he would have been slated just as much as Cisse is now. Its not their fault, both have proved they score goals when they are played as a Striker, not a winger. Its a waste of a player putting them on the wing.

Seriously Pardew is making some very poor decisions, when will he man up? The team has played badly all season, a lot of the problems he has created now need a lot of time to be fixed.

The most annoying thing about this season is, and I’m sure most people agree, we are on the cusp of a very good Newcastle team. We have some cracking players, but its no good playing them out of position or handicapping them by playing people like Jonas, Simpson and Williamson.

Im sorry for the long comment. I know how boring they can get, I hope my thoughts came across fairly clearly…

I’m not saying he’s not a great ST, he most certainly is. I just don’t feel that him and Cisse are ever going to work together so as you say, something has to give, and I personally would rather put my eggs in the Cisse basket and go out and get someone who can play alongside him. Better that then waiting for his knee to explode or have this “will he leave?” discussion every six months.

Some would argue that Suarez’s profligacy has costed Liverpool, they aren’t exactly lighting up the Prem League. My point is that if a striker is scoring 10+ goals in the league the team should be doing well, if they aren’t, it’s an indication of either a p!ss poor team or a selfish striker. Ba plays for himself, not for the team, he is only concerned about finding the net to secure the best move he possibly can, and for me that isn’t good enough.

He may be a nice man off the field but he comes across like a selfish git on it. Shearer scored goals, but he brought others into the game too, Ba doesn’t give a damn about his team mates as long as he is scoring, when he isn’t scoring or is playing out of position everyone hears about it. Interesting how Cisse hasn’t been complaining given how he is being played RW.

    Cisse is our future.

Ian M’s reminiscences of 1992 at the Baseball ground and what followed it, makes it sound almost romantic…although for those who witnessed it, it was in reality traumatic. It was directly responsible for my hairloss that came on at least 5 years before my family pattern baldness gene was programmed to activate!
I remember KK after our leicester survival saying that
“it is criminal that a club of this size should be in that situation and it is up to SJH and the board to ensure it never ever happens again.” Of course SJH stepped up to the plate and the KK bandwagon steamrollered everything the following season and transformed the way the Englisgh game was played in the following Premiership years.
Of course, mention of KK is controversial in these blog parts…he is almost a swear word for the Ashley lovers and Robson sugarcoaters…..no statue for some while yet I think, but unquestionably the only time Newcastle ever came lose to fulfilling their huge potential in the modern era.
Somehow I can’t see, if we successfully negotiate our relegation flirtation this season (as we should), that it will signify any great seachange in the way our owner and MD back the manager or engage the true passion of the fans.

Not everyone who dislikes KK is an Ashley lover or Robson sugarcoater as you so eloquently put. You’re so quick to dismiss those with different opinions than yourself and to do so it seems inherent that place them in pigeonholes.

Out of interest, a “Robson sugarcoater” is what exactly?

  • 407 Transfer Sage // Dec 11, 2012 at 8:44 PM

    Pressure will mount on pardew.

I’m being realistic and not expecting points from man utd and man city. They are bonus games. We just need to make sure it’s hard for them and try to get a point.

We need to get at qpr, and we must compete with arsenal and Everton as they have both been vulnerable this year.

I just wish pardew could see the obvious problems. Even if he tries to fix the problem and fails that’s fine. He just needs to try something different with the fright players in their best positions.

Yeah all of those shows are awesome. You should check out The Wire or The Pacific if you aint seen them.

Even without the lack of investment we should be playing a lot better than we are. There are maybe 7 teams that have consistently had better starting 11′s than us in the PL this season so in theory we should be comfortably in the top 10 but find ourselves just above the relegation zone. How people can justify this is beyond me and they need to wake up and smell the coffee IMO. Yes injury’s should have knocked us of track a bit but as for derailing our entire season, only the biggest optimist would believe that.

December will not be jolly for us by the looks of things so Pardew gets my backing to have his signings in January (Provided Ashley lets him) and then have a month or two to bed them in. If after all that we are still playing poorly and not picking up points then Pardew has to go IMO.

  • 431 HullMag6 // Dec 11, 2012 at 9:25 PM

Sir Bob did well and would’ve continued until freddie pulled the rug from under him and let the spice boys win (dyer etc). KK was great apart from killing reserves and development that was too high a price for the entertainers without a legacy. Ultimately KK went flaky when he shouldve pushed on, no killer instinct when it was needed.

  • 432 davis_toons // Dec 11, 2012 at 9:39 PM

That great Keegan side was fantastic for the club and the game. but how much credit do you give the manager and how much the players and the board that backed him, and KK walked out on the club twice and also England and was less than ordinary everywhere else he managed. He is a Newcastle legend, but not in the same league as Sir Bobby, for mine.

And Demba ‘its my ball and nobody else is having a touch’ Ba. Greedy shit, if i see him scuff another 35 yarder when he could slide Cisse in i am going to internally combust.

  • 438 check the toastie // Dec 11, 2012 at 10:00 PM

Kevin Keegan gave me the lost exhilerating football the club has ever produced, he also got Fulham promoted (granted backed financially) but had them also playing fast attacking attractive football, Also did OK at Man City.

He was also in the process of bringing the good times back to the Toon until Ashley undermined him with Dennis Wise, yes maybe he should have stayed, but it must have been difficult and Ashley screwed him by taking Wises word on things.

Please dont have a go at Keegan, he was the best, and so were his team. Luck is the only thing his team lacked, one of the greatest travesty’s in football for me. Still gutted about that season.

  • 439 solano // Dec 11, 2012 at 10:01 PM

Ruddy @402….so you’re neither an Ashley lover or a Sugarcoater…give yourself a pat on the back. There is a huge spectrum from Ashley to Robson Lover and I admit,my loose phraseology made it sound as though they were one and the same…they most certainly are not and I wouldn’t want to defame the good name of our former manager being synonomous with our despicable owner…though I do recall you sticking up for the present regime much more than was justifiable for someone as intelligent as yourself!
Am I right in recalling you made an arbitrary decision to support NUFC post KK from your home in Ireland? That is your right, but we have many less pompous posters from the Emerald Isle who have a lot more to contribute than their own idiosyncracies and who actually appreciate our modern history was actually defined by KK..we were really nobodies, going nowhere b4 KK came as player then boss..dareI sayyou probably wouldn’t support NUFC if we had indeed disappeared into the 3rd Division in 1992?
My sugar coat comment is simply an observation that SBR hasbeen deified as the founder of our ‘bigclub’ status..it is total nonsense! Four memorials remembering his good name in and around the round is OTT in my opinion for a good coach who did a very good job but ultimately failed to achieve anything greater than a man who is totally ignored by the club and many of its followers!

It’s more that I think we could win those games if we improved but I can’t see it…whereas I have no faith in us getting anything of city or man utd

  • 442 HullMag6 // Dec 11, 2012 at 10:10 PM

Wise was already in place before KKs ilfated second coming. Ashley thought hiring him would placate us. It was always going to end in tears.

When KK walked away effectively after giving spuds a 7-1 pounding when he shouldve built on that. hence why I said flaky when he should have been putting his opponents to the sword. I lost faith in him then as a top manager. His England tenure just made it worse.

  • 443 Transfer Sage // Dec 11, 2012 at 10:17 PM

    Solano

Keegan splits opinion as he walked away, once of his own accord second time pushed by Ashley (as proved in the courts).

Also although kk came closer to winning with us than sir bobby he is sometimes blamed for throwing away the league where sir bobby never had the chance to throw it away so hasn’t faced that criticism. Not really fair but that’s how some see it.

Sir bobby is also a top manager around all of football. His managing of us was seen as a homecoming. Similar to if messi was to return to his hometown club in Argentina, a great football man going back to his roots.

Also sir bobby passed away which naturally sparks more emotion in people and generates tributes and statues etc

Sir bobby did a lot for local area charity wise too so gets a lot of acclaim for that and rightly so.

  • 444 stuart no9 // Dec 11, 2012 at 10:25 PM

Ah right- yes i totally agree with you that we could get something from those games if we did however improve, the problem i feelwe have now , is if our own manager is worried, that tells me he has nothing in reserve- he has exhausted every avenue , every tactic , to try to pull us in the right direction- hes failed, thats why he is worried – he has nowhere to go now relegation is staring him in the face and he is hoping somewhere along the line the players are suddenly going to click, that wont happen ,they need some inspiration from some one, if that person is not the manager – who is it?

  • 445 bottle // Dec 11, 2012 at 10:36 PM

Exactly what use is is posting comments like:
“We could be in the bottom 3 at x-mas.”
What kind of supporter is so negative about their team?

  • 446 Ian Toon // Dec 11, 2012 at 10:40 PM

Solano- @. 399 An excellent post. For me not so much a trip down
memory lane as a history lesson. I started watching in our first season in the Premiership. My father was at the Leicester game which we lost but stayed up he tells the story in the same romantic way. Whilst travelling not so long ago I read Denis Cassidy’s book – The Day the Promises had to stop . He sought to draw a parallel between the development by Sir John of the Metro Centre and. Sports Direct by Ashley. Your right though there is no comparison. Sir John did it for the Geordie nation and brought joy and a sense of pride. I wont say what Mike Ashley has provided because there is enough hyperbole on here already. Without a doubt the Hall/ Keegan era saw the club reach meteoric heights not remotely matched since . Paul Joannou and John Gibson are in broad agreement. Certainly I would agree that the financial backing Hall provided to enable Keegan to build a team to compete for the Premiership is unlikely to be provided by Ashley. But of course the football dynamics have changed since
Abramovich. The best we can hope for is a spending binge sufficient for him to feel secure in the knowledge of Premiership Survival. Kicking on next season. Owners come and go but the football club lives on. I do hope your feeling better .

Thanks Ian…I will always look back with immense pride on what we achieved in the 90′s under KK..truly incredible and never replicated by any other ‘sleeping giant’ since the Prem began in terms of style…we all have to move on of course, but life should be a progressive journey..if there are two words which I hate in this life it is ‘consolidation’ and ‘conservatism’….words that have been bandied around this blog and our club for too long. Those words are usually used to screen vested interests against the majority/common good. MA and his lap bullterrier are guilty of this to a high degree and the fans of the club are witnessing the results of a lack of foresight and ambition.

Beefman – Agreed, Collo as a DM could be awesome – so would you replace Tiote with him? Play Anita alongside him? I think if we can bring in two first class CB’s in January, Collo would be immense moving forward. As you say, his reading of the game would compensate for his pace and with 2 very good CB’s behind him, our defence would become just awesome!! Not before time either!!

Collo has played DM for Newcastle at least once before and as I recall not all that successfully. It is quite a different role to CB and it would take time to adjust you’d think, but since then he has become an elite premiership player, so why not if needs be.

Even so, isn’t it a little premature to be identifying Cheik’s replacement and aren’t Bigi and Perch capable deputies as things stand?

January should be interesting…will we man up and get much needed players and work on problem areas, or will we sit idle and sell off our top players in the summer to fatten MA’s wallet?

It was maddening to see people suggest last summer that we didn’t need signings. We were incredibly lucky to lose only Ryan Taylor/Steven Taylor to long term injury that whole season.

Now that our tactics look much better, Pardew needs to shape up our defense, set pieces and Simmo’s crossing, unless we get Debuchy.

  • 457 Santon03 // Dec 12, 2012 at 5:13 AM

MA gambles, sometimes win sometimes lose. MA rewarded AP with 8 years contract when AP was in a strong position to be next England manager (maybe MA tried to get compensation from FA).
Winning the best manager in the league + strong candidate to be next England manager + 8 years contract = arrogant, it’s normal human nature, but it’s time to realize he isn’t that good.
I have a feeling that AP will be sacked before January and MA already talked with several candidates behind the scene. I hope this is true, because I can’t see we get any better under AP.

    Morning lads!

I think it is fair to say firing Pardew now would be premature and I think everyone at the top share a responsibility. I’ll be the first to admit that whoever runs the team, picks the players and formation and even draws up his shortlist for future transfers are the fall guy or savour for that matter.

That’s how it should be and that is what he is paid for (he get to do it his way so it is only natural)

I think MA knows that the strategy laid down last summer what naive and it has backfired – he’ll support Pardew and I think investments will be made in January – that doesn’t mean we won’t have to sell to buy (that was always my thoughts to why we didn’t invest in the summer)

If Pardew can’t turn it around I think regardless of an 8 year contract he’ll be fired – MA will protect his investment that is NUFC!

the only thing Pardump has in common with Mourinho is he likes to look a smarmy tw*t. To be fair he does a good job.

Pardew is a Mourinho without the talent.

Chelski used to sit deep and Counter attack under Mourinho, happy to let the other team have the ball at times, this is the only thing i can see in our play that Pardew could have possibly gleaned from watching his sides. The man talks some shit.

The 8 year contract just mystifies me, the only reason to give Pardew the long term contract was the fact he never questions his bosses.

In all walks of life the ‘Yes Man’ gets promoted or rewarded irrelevent of ability or talent. Its a shame but snivling creeps and people who would sell there soul to progress are generally rewarded. Its why KK walked away, for all his faults he is, his own man.

If Pardew was any sort of guy he would resign, he has nowhere now to go. After a humiliating defeat at the weekend, i predict 4-0, we have QPR, who may be granted there first 3 points of the season.

About subs – I have even subbed people in the first half if I wasn’t happy!

…one time I subbed a guy without putting someone new on the field just to prove a point. :-D lol

It actually worked (remember at the level I play today you can sub all you want)

My point was, that Pardew really need to work at the effects a sub can have and use them better when he changes formation. If you are one down at half time the first sub should be within the first 10 min of the second half and the next witin the first 20 min. The third sub can be make or break sub so it is very important.

That one Pardew sadly have no concept about – he does not know how to implement it (and when he does do it, it is always the same players)

It is the Groundhog Day thing we have talked about :-) (…it is not people leaking info)

    1. 1st Goal – Jonas did not close down- resulting in Duff to cut across and Sidwell put it in through a reflection off Williamson.

Neg: Some blame Colo for the 1st goal. Which Colo tried his best to close down 2 players before having a sliding touch to the ball but the clearance touch was not good enough. Jonas should have close down Sidwell.

    2. 2nd Goal – Colo cant marked as always. – free kick comes in Colo was behind the man and was gaps away.
    Colo Positive:
    1. Very good header on target clear off the line.
    2. Good Shot on target in the box before hitting the pole.
    3. As usual good defensive work throughout.

    3. Pardew, to replace BenArfa with Shola, means he wants more balls in the Air. By Playing 3 Big Strikers.
    at 70mins.

There will be not creativity once HBA comes off and why Pardew didnt want another midfield was really beyond anyone. There is 20 more mins of playing time.

    The More Correct Order.

    Replace Simpson With Peach,
Reason: Is obvious, we want more attack on the Right. Side/ people running into the box and Simpson is not giving us that.

    Replace HBA with Sylvain Marveaux,
Reason: Like for like, as simple as that.

    Then Shola for Cisse.

Good morning. Every day is groundhog day on here. Same old same old. Another day of denunciations of everything to do with Pardew.
    Ian Toon
Your right i think on your investment call in January. It would be a stupid businessman who would lose control of premier league status just as media income goes into overdrive Also just as there could well be opportunities to cash in on live action on smart phones. Ashley is not stupid.
    Beattie 25
I would like to say it’s good to have you back but self respect prevents me. Have you no shame!
Solano is right it’s one thing changing your name and having a new pseudonym to disguise the fact you had actually left. However with talk of relegation your back with your old persona and plastic veneer. Worse still your even more of an old drama queen and top draw phoney. Just bore off. Failing that you could find your natural home and team up with Kegs or the Ruddy rude brothers. You would slot right in and be just as relevant.

Even with better quality player .e.g RB coming in it will only cover the floss of Pardew.

Andy Townsend was even talking about Pardew selection and formation.

Probably been mentioned on here already,so sorry if it has.
Danny Guthrie refused to travel with Reading for the game against the Scumberland. So he left us for 1st team football and as barely played and when he gets the chance due to injuries he decides to do a KK and spit out the dummy

I think MA is trying to get FFP started or being too cheap, I don’t know. But all I know he is trying to make NUFC like any other companies run, self financing. You can’t spend more than you earn, if you do you will have huge debt and our profit wasn’t that high. All I can see is MA regreted buying NUFC, it’s very bad investment, he bought it when the club had a massive debt. Now since he is already in it, he try to turn it into good investment. Some of the methods are not popular like stadium naming rights etc. It’s not a magic trick, it will take some time not in 1 or 2 years. He is being extra careful after all it is a huge chuck of his money, some interpreted as being cheap. From the money he used to buy and run NUFC, how many % has return?

  • 478 Dannyo // Dec 12, 2012 at 8:21 AM

Collo as a DM is not a bad shout imo, but i think he could work as a CM too. He’s got ability on the ball and his passes are sometimes quite shrewd.

  • 479 Dannyo // Dec 12, 2012 at 8:23 AM

    @Marty
Aye, i saw that one. Suggested on twitter that he has finally hit puberty.
What a numb nut, throwing away his chances like that.
Grass is always greener on the other side eh? :P

    ED
    A Plea.
Please do not reprint any stories from NUFC Players telling us how much they are hurting!!

They are not hurting as much as me and the majority, after all, they will be getting paid weekly to underperform alot more than 95% of NUFC fans are being paid annually!!

    Sick of hearing it.

I dont blame pardew in all of this, he picks the strongest team he can and has available, I blame the players, who are underperforming and totally spoiling the christmas run up for the majority of us.

For me, there is only one player performing consistently well in that team, and thats Santon!!

The rest for me could be dropped…….IF we had anyone decent sitting on the benches that is!!!

  • 481 Santon03 // Dec 12, 2012 at 8:36 AM

Let’s say MA never exist, but you have the same amount of wealth as he is (1.8bill if I’m not mistaken). You just spent 500mill (clearing debts and buying the club), that’s 36% of your wealth and you haven’t seen any return at all, now you’ve been told to spend 50 to 60mill (transfer fees + wages/year) without any guarantee. Will you do it right away or think it over or no thanks?

  • 482 Marty-Toon // Dec 12, 2012 at 8:38 AM

Totally true, the grass is nt always greener
Simmo will soon find that out too by sittin on the bench somewhere for some extra cash

  • 483 Santon03 // Dec 12, 2012 at 8:39 AM

    sorry it’s 28%

Pardew lost patience with us playing Football – not hoofball

Yeah up to 70 mins in the second half we played some of the best football this season – except for slack marking for second goal.

Kept the ball on the deck moved the ball at pace only lacked the killer second goal.

then normal service resume bring on Shola for the classiest player on the pitch and Hoof it long.

Santon…I didn’t say MA was cheap merely that both him and Pardew had been naive or even arrogant about where we were.

Money spend rightly would have been a sound investment when you look at how much tv money he’ll get next season…if we are still in the PL that is.

By the way buying a football have never been a good investent for anybody (you do it for the love of the game our you don’t do it at all) There was an article not long ago in the Mag I think about this being the first time in 40 years that Newcastle was owned by someone who wasn’t a Newcastle fan/supporter – we have a Tottenham fan as an owner.

Santon, MA just bought the wrong club and when he boughtbour club it was just before the finansial meltdown (I think he has an naive nature non the less)

  • 486 Marzy // Dec 12, 2012 at 8:54 AM

    More KK talk depresses me…!”past”.
Krul’s performance was somewhat avr as he just kicks long hoofing balls up to whoever, but a great shot stopper never the less.
Simmo defensive duties where pretty good & no one can argue with that..! But attacking wise I would rather have my gran cross a ball. Santon look good going forward as always, but he doesn’t like tracking back “at fault partially for 1st goal”. Willo well just that (?) never good enough for the PL & Collo seems to be making more mistakes, could be lack of confidence around him or the lpool game..!
Midfield Anita was good again, and looking better every time, Tiote looks class one min & looks Awful the next, being to cocky in midfield instead of bullish of old!!, HBA class class class, but lets face it he looks class as the teams pretty poor so in turn is just a good player performing better then his colleagues & lastly in midfield Jonas, I really think he has aged somewhat, great passion for the toon but never ever should he start again. Right Forwards, Cisse & Ba can’t & will not play together?, I think it’s a bigger problem with them both, big egos for the both of them?? Want to be the main striker, shooting from anywhere, ignoring one another especially Ba, idvidually good fwds but as a pair useless.
I would like to see Pardew experiment with different formations as these formations we just look like we’re over run in midfield & too many gaps appearing at the back, I would much rather see him TRY instead of settling for what he thinks would work and the toon being in the bottom. Get players in like a speedy forward he likes to link up, play making midfielder & a winger who puts in dangerous pacey balls, a defender who be disciplined & aerially be dangerous & lastly a right back who can do both!. ” end of rant and essay!!”

Your point re Mike Ashley spending his money is irrelevant!!
He bought a football club. His choice, he didnt have to, he bought a football club with debt, again his choice, he wants to regain dsome of his money…..and why not6, but surely when you buy a football club in the hope of making money, you have to invest in the club and the team to make them successful, or you simply wont make nay money.
Its a simple business plan, that Mike Ashley follows when he can be arsed or if it is a gamble. If there is no gamble he does not seem interested!

Situ in point, he gambled to go with the same team as finished the season strongly without building upon the relatively small amount of success we had last season…..the gamble hasnt paid off!! Will he twist or stick….and if he twists, will you agree that the bloke has no ambition for this football club???

    Bottle

a fan who has been watching all season and isn’t in denial and is fully aware of pardew’s relegation record!!

O’Neill was good at celtic, so is neil lennon!

  • 489 Rotonda heights // Dec 12, 2012 at 9:30 AM

    Les

pardew’s alleged big strength is man management.
if he an’t get the players up for it, what is his job in that case?
