Newcastle United are reported to be getting ready to bid for Lyon’s Bafetimbi Gomis according to Mercato365, and it’s not the first time we have been linked with the 10 times capped French International striker.
Batetimbi Gomis – Newcatsle made a bid back in 2008 for this player
We were reported to have made a €10M bid back in June of 2008 for the striker, who at that time was still at Saint-Étienne, and Kevin Keegan was back managing the Magpies, and of course that was the time before the volcano erupted at Newcastle and Kevin Keegan left the club in the September of that year, and we were eventually relegated in the following season.
Two other clubs are linked with the striker, and they are Liverpool and Spurs, and both those top clubs are short of strikers, and so are Newcastle, especially if the increasing reports that Demba Ba will be leaving the club next month turn out to be true.
And if Shola Ameobi leaves to play for Nigeria in the African Cup of Nations in January, then we’ll definitely need to bring in at least one striker in January, and the sooner the better.
Gomis signed a five year deal with Lyon back in the summer of 2009, and he cost the club €13M back then from Saint-Étienne, so we’re not sure how much he would cost if he moves next month, but he has a good record at Lyon, and in 168 total appearances he has scored 67 goals, and this season has 13 goals in just 19 appearances.
Gomis would fit well into the Newcastle side, and his physical style of play is like that of the great Didier Drogba, but we wonder how much Mike Ashley will be willing to give Alan Pardew next month to strengthen the side.
Newcastle are currently struggling in 15th place in the league table, and we’ve won just one game in our last 11 games in all competitions – and that was the 3-0 defeat against a 10 man Wigan side at home.
What do you think?

Comment #1Can I ask if anyone else feels the same as me. Please respond but to me Gutierezz is not in my opinion good enough for the first team. He is not good at going round players, not good at crossing. Only thing he can do is track back, shoot or head the ball. I would switch him and Santon or play Marveaux.

I will still love to see Jonas play, but I think he is not suited to current role. He is probably better as LB or RB.

Comment #4What I don’t understand is why did we bought Cisse if we gonna play him as winger? I thought he was a striker at Freiburg.

Doesn’t sound like he is committed to the club. Scoring or not, we need players who are fighting for the club, not for their next contract at a higher ranking team.
If he would say – … makes you dream, but I am 100% committed to my correct team Newcastle, and I want to stay there.
Instead he is saying – I would not say no if Arsenal will pay my release clause.

Comment #9Gomis is a great striker in my opinion, but wouldn’t he cost like 15-18M? If they bought him for 13, and he has a really good record of scoring.
Also, isn’t he a bit like the strikers we have? Big and powerful?
We need a small striker. A fast one. A one who can dribble and go around the defense. Who can sneak in, who can shoot from far and help the bigger striker.
Or am I wrong ?

Comment #10Rotonda – yes I see what you are saying. I am saying I don’t think I would feel the same way about my club. NUFC is a different case culturally from Man C who have lived in their rich and successful neighbours’ shadow for years.
Besides EVERYBODY saw through FFS buying Owen, Kluivert and the ‘attempted’ Rooney transfer. Playing at gods made us look stupid. The end result he sold out desperately to the Cockneys because he was ill and the cluib was on the brink of being found out financially. We dodged a bullet there.

Comment #11Jeff….I took that as the media know about the release clause (2) and that Arsenal need a ST (2) and end putting them together and coming out at 5….much like they always do.
With all of the coverage on it, do you really think Ba thinks he needs to do the maths for Wenger?

Comment #12No thanks on gomis – not as good as Ba or Cisse IMO. We need someone at least as good.
Unfortunately, we’ve missed our chance in the summer when we were flying high. Which top player is going to come to us now for a relagation fight, because come Jan that’s where we’ll be looking at our fixtures.
Silly penny pinching has cost is dearly. With Europa league it was clear we needed 3 more players to push on.
I really fear we will lose more than Ba in Jan. Krul, Tioe, Cabaye, HBA and Ba all at risk.
We need some serious players brought in early Jan to show out intent.

Comment #14That’s the daft thing if we sell Ba, the logical thing would be to restore cisse as the number 9 and play with 1 central striker with fast wingers / wide men either side but pardew doesn’t do logical, so it will be shola or a shola type big old target man replacing ba

Comment #15Londtoon – I agree that guti isn’t the player he was ! He has developed into a more defensively minded player, which is great at times, but we lack such creativity at times and need flair going forward. The problem with that is we aren’t strong at the back and will always be vulnerable. We MUST strengthen our back line, Willo isn’t good enough (sorry to say) and simmo lacks the desire to get forward. Our attacking intent falls apart when simmo has the ball past in the final 3rd. We need a match to santon on the opposite wing. But first a foremost – a PROPER centre half is a must!!! Yanga mbiwa please, Santa!

I loved watching Jonas in the past. His commitment, his desire, the 110% he gives always. But in football terms, he is a bit above average player, that’s all.
You said it right. He cannot cross. He cannot pass a player (Zabaleta stopped him every time – 7 out of 8 or something like that – he tried to dribble) not by speed nor dribbling.
He is good for those minutes where you need to fight. Where wanting is more important than skill – and those minutes are the last 20-30 mins. I think he should acknowledge that he is not the best for that position. Give the place to a faster better player (like Marv for example), and come as a sub.
Or to put Santon in his place and him as LB. Or him as LB and Marv as the winger and Santon as a sub. Whatever.
Bottom like – Jonas should be replaced by a better player.
The players we need to replace in the first 11 are:
Williamson
Simpson
Jonas
I think that those are our 3 weakest links when it comes to the regular starters.

Comment #17I would also put Ba back out on the wing and restore Cissé to the middle. No player is bigger than the club and I feel Ba maybe has the club over a barrel when he hinted he wanted to play centrally or he would leave. Bad form !

Comment #18I think also that Cisse should be given back his natural place. Put Ba on the side or on the bench. The guy wants out anyway, why try and please him?
Ba is not committed to the club. He is only playing for his next contract.

Comment #19If Ba goes then fine, he’s not Messi. Shame but could be better in the long run.
Really would like Yanga Mbiwa but not sure how attractive a proposition we are at the moment when the players look at the table..
Yanga Mbiwa, a proper winger as without HBA we have nothing but players who arent good enough, Debuchy and a CF please.
We will get nothing like that though, and I am counting down to the “Getting Cabaye, HBA and Saylor back are like 3 new signings” comment at the beginning of Feb.

I love the idea of a club growing organically, but if you have an ace scouting system you also need a Wenger type manager to pull it off. I just don’t have the faith in Pardew to make it happen long term with his long ball philosophy. Carr can bring in as many great technical players as he likes but if the manager wants to go a different direction, what’s the point?

Comment #22I’m really confused as to why people are saying Jonas isn’t good for us anymore?
I mean look at how weak our defense has been when we’ve had Colo out. I can only say he has to be a more defensive minded player with the way we’ve been giving away goals this season.

Comment #24Nothing wrong with Jonas – unsung hero for me. We failed to strengthen in the summer. 3 extra players would have been enough. We have to build a side before developing the youth, ridiculously under strength. As for playing cisse wide, stupid idea he’s wasted there. Simple fact is ba and cisse are too alike in terms of the areas the occupy in the pitch. We failed to get a striker to compliment cisse and he’s been off his game just to accommodate ba. Ba is better wide than cisse. Swap them in a 433. Play ba or cisse in a 451 and ditch 442. In truth in a perfect world it would be 4 or 5 but I reckon we’ll get a max of 3 in and sell ba along with possibly one more. Jnvestment is desperately needed but they’ll do the usual sticky plaster job and gamble on staying up. Plus the old line of returning players being like new signings. This so called good business model doesn’t appear to include stability on the pitch. We only need one injury to one key player to seriously struggle. Defenders needed, playmaker who can take free kicks needed, 2nd striker needed. Ba is a good striker who will also need replacing if he goes. I’m praying we have 4 or 5 players lined up but expect 1 or 2 extra in reality. As well run financially the balance sheet is, we simply don’t do the same on the field of play. I trust Pardew he’s only playing the hand he’s been dealt.

Comment #25Santon as a sub?? Howay man! He’s been our best player this season along with Anita !
Agree with this!
Seems for the past few months we’re retreading the same wish list.
If Simpson is going to leave then we need a new RB – Debuchy
If Ba wants to leave then we need a new LW (not a striker) as we have a perfectly good spearhead in Cisse – Remy?
I’m not convinced with Williamson, need someone to complement Coloccini – Yanga-Mbiwa is the forum favourite here
Jonas needs a break, he’s not had a good season and someone else needs a chance in that midfield alongside Anita/Tiote/Cabaye (when fit) – Sissokho?
That should leave us with
GK – Krul with Harper/Elliott stand-ins
LB – Santon with Ferguson/Jonas? stand-ins
RB – Debuchy with Anita/Raylor (when fit) stand-ins
CB – Coloccini/Yanga-Mbiwa with Saylor/Williamson/Perch stand-ins
CM – Tiote/Anita/Cabaye/Sissokho (3 from 4) with Perch/Jonas/Marveaux/Raylor as stand ins
LW – Remy/? January transfer with Marveaux as stand in
RW – Ben Arfa with Obertan as a last resort
ST – Cisse with Shola as stand-in (or sign a young striker in January, maybe a pacy one as suggested elsewhere)
4-3-3 with players in the right positions who want to play for the club, if only life was so simple…

Comment #26Good player but not entirely convincing. I would much rather we go for Remy, Doumbia or Gameiro. We need pace and lot’s of it, add great technique and passing and you solve most of our teams problems.

Comment #27It would appear that Jonas has become a scape-goat for the bad form of the team so far this season !
The whole team with the possible exception of Santon, Anita and HBA have been under performing this year. Difficult to find a reason why but players were sold, Best and Guthrie.
Best scored on a few occasions last year and his goals were important for us at the time, Guthrie was also a good player for us while he was here!
These players were not replaced? Stupid penny-pinching in the transfer market has screwed us this year.
Some of you are just looking for someone to blame and Jonas is getting the short straw this week, next week, if picked, maybe it will be Oba, the week after Williamson and the week after that Simpson.
Meanwhile the team and club are digging a bigger and bigger hole for themselves and may be in danger of taking the drop again, all that hope and positvity from last season for the sake of a few million spent on transfers last summer? Stupid!
The directie and the owners should be blamed and not individual players, and with a win against QPR on satuday i still believe that come 1 Jan and after a few good signings, the whole sorry situation could be turned around.
We need a good run, Big-Time!
Keep the Faith and HWTL !
