What’s The Main Reason for Newcastle’s Slump – Let Us Know

5:12 pm, Monday, December 17th, 2012 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 299 Comments

There are a number of reasons that Newcastle are down in the dumps in the Premier League right now, and we’d like to know which one of them is the main reason for Newcastle’s slump in the Premier League over the last seven games – of which we’ve lost an amazing six.

Here are four possible reasons why we have had such a dramatic downturn in our fortunes over the last couple of months:

  • The club didn’t bring in enough players in the summer to fortify the squad for the extra games we play in the Europa League, and since we have qualified for the final 32 of that competition we will have more games coming up starting in February.
  • Some of our major players are out injured and certainly we’ve been hit with injuries with Ryan Taylor, Haris Vuckic and Dan Gosling out long term, and Yohan Cabaye and Steven Taylor our until February, Ben Arfa now out until next year and that mysterious toe injury that Gabby Obertan has – that has kept him out far too long.
  • A number of our top players not playing anywhere near the form they showed last season, and they include players like Papiss Cisse and Jonas Gutierrez to name just two.
  • There are criticisms of manager Alan Pardew and the coaching staff,  of not being able to get the best out of the good players we still have available.

Each reader has only one vote – and let us know which of the four you think is the major reason for this season’s dramatic slump.

    All of the above

  • 2 Mint // Dec 17, 2012 at 5:17 PM

Tiote loosing the ball/giving away free kicks/red cards is a big chunk of our current points tally

  • 3 santonthenewmaldini // Dec 17, 2012 at 5:18 PM

I dont think there is one MAIN reason more of a combination of the above!!

Also teams have worked out our weaknesses and are also trying a lot harder against us than last season which shows a how much other teams respect us from last season

  • 4 BelfastMagpie // Dec 17, 2012 at 5:19 PM

Lack of investment, injuries, Pardews tactics, under performing players.

  • 5 Dannyo // Dec 17, 2012 at 5:22 PM

I’m not voting for this, cause i think it’s the sum of all of em.

    1. We should’ve brought in atleast 2 defensive heavy duty signings.
    2. We need to invest in medical gear, much like the deal Man Utd made with Toshiba. A wise investement imo.
    3. Many players have been off form for a longer period, some still are. Which is odd cause if anything, AP is a manager who gets the best out of players individually. I dunno what we can add here, but maybe the lack of spending got to them? Maybe it’s just the general motivation.
    4. Maybe they could be wiser tactically, but i think the main reason here is not bringing in a coach with European experience.

Had they done that, we’d be fighting for 4th right now, cause all i say is absolute and my footballing experience is greather than anyone else.
    That is all.

As I have said before, Ashley just wants to use NUFC as an advertising hoarding. Its pretty sickening. Funny how all the happy clappies and the mini accountants are quiet now as the shear bleakness of our summer transfer policy hits home.

  • 7 BelfastMagpie // Dec 17, 2012 at 5:25 PM

Still think most of the blame lies with Ashley & co, but Pardew has played his part too.

Playing hoofball when we look far better when we pass it around.

Picking players every week, even though their playing crap. Playing players out of position etc etc

  • 8 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Dec 17, 2012 at 5:26 PM

Tough one to answer, but I went with lack of incomings and here is why (oh goody, an explanation….is everyone holding their breath?)…

Players playing badly – If new players had come in, in theory they’d have to keep up their form or risk a newbie taking their spot.

Too many injuries – We’d have more players to cover the injuries.

Pardew & The coaches – Nothing really related here, other than they would have better options to mix things up with. Whether they would or not is anyones guess.

There isn’t really one main reason, but if we had strengthened we’d likely be in a better situation to judge our shortcomings.

Personally, i think the main problem is BelfastMagpie 🙂

  • 9 stuart no9 // Dec 17, 2012 at 5:26 PM

all those reasons have played a part in our woeful form these last few months. its hard to pick out just one, we didnt buy, and pards is not up to it- they are my two major factors.

  • 10 MacToon // Dec 17, 2012 at 5:27 PM

All of the above as has already been said but lack of investment as number 1 mistake.

Munster, from last thread, imho I thought we gave last years champions a run for their money but they had that extra bit of class (as you’d expect) and maybe even the luck of the green too. Definitely see impovements from about 4-5 games ago AND we had Hatem missing.

  • 11 Davey_H // Dec 17, 2012 at 5:27 PM

“Tiote loosing the ball/giving away free kicks/red cards is a big chunk of our current points tally”

So it is not only me who thinks that!!!
I cannot believe the amount of times he has either lost the ball by arsing about or in-completed passes. I would love to see those stats somewhere.

  • 12 Ashton // Dec 17, 2012 at 5:27 PM

Pardew’s tactics and subs. And his lack of guts in terms of team selection is the only reason why we are in this position.

He compromised the team and changed the 433 to make Ba happy because of his contract. You see he pulled this stunt to make Ba sign a long term contract. But he won’t and he will leave for peanuts. And Pardew would look like an idiot.

Our team is set up to get the best out of Ba. Everything revolves around him and everyone is doing their best to make him happy by scoring goals. It has worked greatly so far. For Ba but for the team not so much.

Pardew is being played like puppet by Ba and it’s so funny and absurd.

  • 13 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Dec 17, 2012 at 5:28 PM

Munster….My calculator blew up trying to justify our summer spending. Hoping for a new one for Christmas, I miss being a mini accountant.

  • 14 toonarmy1986 // Dec 17, 2012 at 5:28 PM

Pardew has been let down by to many top players coasting by from last seasons success. Colo, Tiote, Jonas and Cisse are all shadows of the players they were last season. Cisse can be excused since we’ve tried to keep Ba happy sacrificing him. Another massive factor we don’t have any squad players who can play anywhere and do anything asked of them. Perch and Ryan Taylor to me was as important as anyone last season and we’ve lost one of them to injury. Losing guys like Best as well who could do a job when called upon.

  • 15 89Norcal // Dec 17, 2012 at 5:30 PM

just saw on sky that Feillaini has been suspended for violent conduct against Shawcross at Stoke.

His return comes just before we play Everton.

    Damn our rotten luck 🙁

  • 16 Pardews Perfect Battleplan // Dec 17, 2012 at 5:30 PM

none of the above. its clear to see the impending apocalypse has got the boys down. combined with the planetary alignment causing a distortion in the cosmic energy flow to pardews head, through his fantastic follicular structure, and it is as clear as day why we have been struggling.

  • 17 Ashton // Dec 17, 2012 at 5:31 PM

Our medical team is also pathetic. They should get some blame for being complete idiots and rushing players left and right. HBA?? Tiote?? Colo???Cabaye??? They all got rushed back in. And got the same injuries days after recovering from them.

  • 18 blew // Dec 17, 2012 at 5:32 PM

Lack of top players brought in, as Santon @3 states , other clubs are attacking our weaknesses and succeeding.
I think the Pardew /Carr partnership has brought in 9 midfielders in additiion to those existing, how many are good enough?
The pair of them have overlooked pace and heading ability, 2 major problems in the squad.

  • 19 89Norcal // Dec 17, 2012 at 5:34 PM

Right our slump, that’s definitely all of the above, but primarily #4, when pardew inexplicably had us playing god awful football October thru November.

Predictably, he’s now got us playing far better, except for the defense which is why we are still losing.

I agree with some here, he’s being a puppet to Ba’s demands. just play them in a 1-1 format and be done with it!

  • 20 magpiedan // Dec 17, 2012 at 5:35 PM

Hi I’m the new guy. Followed for a while and will be a regular.

The reasons are a few. Pardew has been caught short with players but has then used what he’s got in a poor way. He should probably have played Marveaux over Gutierrez or even slap Bigi in to create a midfield 3. If you’re good enough you’re old enough. But injuries have really hurt us. As well as Big Mikes poor ‘haggling’ over players that don’t particularly look incredible (except Debuchy big fan) and its probably now a bit to do with confidence. I’m fearing QPR as I feel if we don’t get a good 3 points, Man U and Arsenal will be tough as frozen crap.
    – Keep Calm and HWTL!

  • 21 Ashton // Dec 17, 2012 at 5:39 PM

We did bring players in and improved the team. Anita is a class act and he is one of our best players. Last year we did very well and with Anita’s arrival and us keeping everyone, well…… it’s not that outlandish of us to expect the same type of performance really. Theoretically we should even do better than last year.

  • 22 Magpies-till-d3ath // Dec 17, 2012 at 5:43 PM

    Pardew’s fault!!!!

  • 23 stuart no9 // Dec 17, 2012 at 5:44 PM

  • 24 tequilamag // Dec 17, 2012 at 5:46 PM

All of the above but with number one as main reason.
We stood still in terms of transfers, none of the players we let go were anymore than squad players but Anita was the only we brought in ready for first team .Injuries have highlighted the lack of depth to the squad..

  • 25 ONLINE GUY // Dec 17, 2012 at 5:51 PM

Ashley really messed up in the summer transfer window ..Lambarsse admitted to making fundamental mistakes by the hapless pair in the running of our football club

..yet at the same time when making that statement were busy making another Mistake ! our defence is the weak link in the team ..and 2 players in particular know who they are .

Saying that, the strikers are still trying to work together and failing up to now to a degree..because of tactics.

I think the coffee machine in the players lounge is broken or only serves that crap vegetable soup. That is usually the cause of discontent in 90% of work-related disputes. No I refuse to vote, I think its a compound of all the above and a few more behind-the-scenes unknowns. Which is good really because law of averages says a few of these should naturally resolve soon anyway.

Stuart – I agreed with Big Al, I just made a side note that Al the pundit is a far cry from Al the player, he doesn’t actually have to broadcast discontent – as an old boy who used to front the party line with steely determination he now feels compelled to rehash common knowledge, to the end of doing no good really. Its bound to upset the fans and/or further irritate a stubborn MA into digginmg his heels in imo.

  • 28 BennygivesmeTinglyBalls // Dec 17, 2012 at 5:55 PM

It is obvious that we didn’t strengthen enough in the summer. All the fans could see it. We just need to replace the championship quality players of Simpson, Williamson and Gutierrez. If we do that we can the otherside of the league again. This may be a blessing in disguise and make Ashley realise we need to sign a few players to progress. The most annoying thing, you look at every signing we make and they are great. Anita was the best player on the field at the weekend! I hope and think we will sign a few good players. We know the club have alot of targets ready as we are linked with 10 players every week, just need Ashley to open his wallet up!

  • 29 Tsunki // Dec 17, 2012 at 5:56 PM

  • 30 Tsunki // Dec 17, 2012 at 6:01 PM

Here we go again – ‘championship quality’ – What? No ‘at best’?

  • 31 ONLINE GUY // Dec 17, 2012 at 6:03 PM

January window good buying potential for the defence ,,we need the following to climb the league..this is fact this will happen with the following players..

Alderwield ..Brilliant Colin Todd in his heyday

A top top right back , Debuchey?

And the best signing we could make? .

.Shane Long, he will be perfect to work with Cisse if Ba leaves .

We missed out on Vertongan after Ashley totally ignored the fact we could have pitched for him….Spurs showed ambition..We did not.

    Shane Long
    Toby Alderweild

iTs no good signing potential when you are facing a relegation fight. Experience is key in our situation not some up and coming kid.

Ashley will still make the mistake of shopping at Aldi or Lidl…We are shagged .

Those of you still complaining about Pardew’s “hoofball” need to watch the games more closely. We haven’t played like that in the last 3 games, save for when Shola is subbed on towards the end of the game.

And you know why we do that? Because it worked so well for us last season as a Plan B.

It’s all about defense, defense, DEFENSE right now. When we concede so often it deflates the team and makes fighting back that much harder.

I for one am proud of the display we showed vs. City, we even had city backed into their own goal in the 2nd half, but poor defense on the counter cost us big time.

I just want to see winning football at the moment. We can concern ourselves on how pretty our football is when we have more points in the bag.
We didn’t play attractive football last season until it became clear we weren’t going to be relegated. The players had less pressure and could enjoy their football.
We’re a mile away from that scenario up to now.
They need to stop feeling sorry for themselves, knuckle down and get some points to relieve the pressure.

I think the whole problem is with the “purples”. A prem team pushing for top 5 needs more than 11 purples, if any of the purples are injured its clear that the players pushing arent good enough. If we could get say 15 purples and the remainder in the calibre of willo / perchy / rtaylor then i think we would be well on the way to a good squad. I am unsure how cabeye / tiote etc can be purples when they were signed for very modest fees and arent earning mega £££ in comparison to other teams. A little investment last summer would have really pushed us on, now come january we are not really an attractive prospect to seasoned internationals like debuchy etc… I can see the likes of benarfa etc demanding a transfer come july…

because in my opinion its not just one of those…

  • 54 catchy in norway // Dec 17, 2012 at 6:34 PM

as normal, i think some of you are mad,,

right how can we go from a team most of you thought were good enough to a team that is a couple ov points above the relegation zone because he didnt get all the players he wanted,,,

anita was brought in as a defender, so we are a CB short,,

we finished 5th and lost no players of quality that pardew thought we needed,, some of us thought it would have been good to keep guthrie around,,

how on earth would 1 more player make us play better, and by better i mean have us in the top 10 right now

i asked before but none of you pro pardew even you IBIZA could answer
tell me we played a weak team against these teams

every one of these games where lost by pardew, playing cautious football, thinking of defending first, reacting to what the other team did, going looking for a goal when we went one behind,,

how on earth is that the players fault, how is it the fans fault, the boards fault

what pardew is paid to do is get a team ready for match day, can any of you really sit there and say yes the team and the tactics where right, the subs,,

forget about who didnt come in, get on with what you have, he has fantastic players, use them right

we played a weaknd team against man c, and gave it a good go, and i really believe if we had played like that against the 5 teams in the links we would have won most of them,,

defense first, come on man, 4 defenders and 3 dmc in most of our games this season,, is our defence that poor,, with the same defendes we kept 15 clean sheets last year, in one summer it so wrong because he dint get a CB in

    Fffffing crazy

some of you have the nerv to call me a negger, we play defensive football with attacking players,

there is some break down between pardew and carr, thats where the problem is,, car is finding attcking players. pardew wants defensive minded players, he isnt getting them so he is trying to make them himself

    total idiot

  • 55 89Norcal // Dec 17, 2012 at 6:35 PM

I don’t love Pardew, but you seem to hate him.

I’m just evaluating his performance considering all other factors like:

    2)Poor player form
    3)Lack of transfer activity
4)Burden (tactically) of preparing for Europa League

Even all that considered I still say Pardew screwed up in Oct-Nov by playing hoofball, but he’s obviously improved our offense.

But our defense has been horrid, last season we had far more clean sheets

  • 56 sula // Dec 17, 2012 at 6:35 PM

    TOON 1978

I think Simpson is just to predictable its the same old thing with him and i have seen he just leaves to much space for the crosses to come in. I would like for young TAV to get a chance and Gutti well i really cant understand at this level how a manager can keep picking him when he is so under par. Do you guys think Tiote has become more lazy now he has settled into british football i say this cause he just looks so much softer then last season. I dont know if its just me but he really doesnt look like the BULL we all saw last year what do you guys think?

catchy’s school of thought is “The Manager is always at fault.” I’ve never bought that argument. A collective effort is required to succeed, and that can be difficult when morale is so low.

  • 61 Hobs // Dec 17, 2012 at 6:40 PM

Injuries to squad players may have a big impact.

The first teamers have to play two matches every week because players like Taylor, Vuckic, Gosling, Obertan are not there so relief them.

In the Premier League, training is very much focused on the next match. When there are two matches. there’s not much time left for basic training, which could explain our failure to create chances and score goals.

Also it’s a lot of pressure now on the shoulders of players like Sammy, Campbell and Ferguson. It’s a lot to ask of the young lads.

I think it’s wrong to rely too much on the young players. If they train too hard they get injuries. That’s probably what happened with Campbell and Ferguson – Their bodies don’t handle the training amount in the first team.

Well said. baffles me how some people expect us to start 3-4 youngsters together. That’s not how it should be ideally, and the fact we are coming to that bridge is a mark that we were too static in the transfer window.

TBH, I think Pardew and the coaching staff KNEW MA would be tight fisted, and that’s why we bought so many younger players and only 1 senior player, and it’s why our senior player was a versatile one: Anita.

  • 66 stuart no9 // Dec 17, 2012 at 6:44 PM

  • 67 89Norcal // Dec 17, 2012 at 6:45 PM

Yes, that’s why I get annoyed at the EA Sports Football Managers here that think it’s so simple.

Most maddening bit is most of us have played competitive football or any sport in general, and know the negative effects of a string of poor results, or even the foreboding of them via conceding multiple goals first, losing men to injuries, etc.

  • 68 toonking // Dec 17, 2012 at 6:46 PM

not spending money is the biggest thing i think is to blame for our season. injuries should not matter a decent team always has cover yet we have so many positions which players will know they won’t stand much chance of being dropped from.
over all i think the only position that we do have players who are still capable of being swapped about is CDM.
winning in casinos relies on luck but in football strength in depth is the way to have a decent team not hoping luck will be in favour of players stayingt fit

  • 69 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Dec 17, 2012 at 6:47 PM

Catchy….Anita came in as a RB? Really? I was under the impression he sought assurances he wouldn’t be played there?

Also, not many are saying it’s solely down to lack of incomings, but it is a factor, even a big one for us.

We still maintain we need a FB and a CB, that’s 50% of our defense, yes that should make a difference.

I did agree that we hadn’t played a weakened team in those games, what are you chatting about? He may set them up defensively, but I don’t believe for one second he’s instructed them to play so poorly and without any fight. That was the difference with the Man City game…commitment. Pardew may well have
some blame for the lack of commitment to date, but make no mistake, if the players had done so against those lesser teams, we would have done better, it was almost non existent.

I think Carr and Pardew identified the players they wanted, it was Llambias and Ashley that failed to bring them in, so he is having to make do with what he has. No doubt he could do a better job at it Catchy, we’re not saying he’s perfect, but you seem incapable of offering the slightest possible idea that it’s not completely down to Pardew…which is why you’re considered a neggar, not for being worried about things, but your refusal to think beyond Pardew is the worst manager ever.

Sula….Tiote was interviewed the other day and said that Pardew has told him unless he’s 100% sure, he shouldn’t commit himself. Obviously with the aim to reduce his card count, but it clearly has effected his game. I think Pardew has it wrong on this one, it’s better he misses games but gives his all when he plays. I can see why Pardew wanted to get rid of that aspect, but it hasn’t worked. Back to the old please.

Catchy I really CBA to go into the ins and outs with you anymore as your views are so blinkered it makes debate pointless.
You ignore the poll findings but it shows to me by the comments made that most people look at the bigger picture and recognise it is not just one factor. The fact that so few people are blaming Pardew as the main reason also speaks volumes.

  • 72 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Dec 17, 2012 at 6:48 PM

The problem people have with you is that you seem to blame everything on Pards. You blame poor individual performances on Pards, you blame injuries on Pards, you blame the fact that Ba and Cisse are incompatible on Pards.

If he gets things tactically wrong, which he has done in the past, then fair enough he deserves the flack, but in the last few games such as Wigan, Fulham and City he has got the tactics spot on, and factors in the latter 2 games other factors were at play that cost us, other than what you see as Pardew’s ineptitude.

Open your eyes to the possibility that you may be wrong on the whole “Pardew is 100% to blame” perspective that you currently hold.

Or should we just go outside and fight?

  • 74 Toon-Barmy // Dec 17, 2012 at 6:52 PM

The one and only reason we’ve done so badly this season is this:

We do not have enough quality players to compete at the top level.

Our boards’ failure to fortify our paper-thin squad didn’t give our “purples” any competition for their places. Those players have therefore underperformed. There’s no quality to replace them with and they know it! Add to that a few injuries/suspensions, throw in a load of youngsters who aren’t ready for the fight and you’ve got trouble!

I just hope Ashley & Co. learn from this mess and buy at least FOUR quality players as soon as possible. If they don’t, we are in big trouble!

  • 75 DaveD1000 // Dec 17, 2012 at 6:53 PM

Tiote isnt the Bull we had but v Man City just as I was thinking Sell him he would pull off some sweet moves. He was chasing and staying upright while getting the ball so it may bode well in the future as the saying goes

  • 77 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Dec 17, 2012 at 6:53 PM

You are absolutely spot on with the Tiote issue. He now plays devoid of that brutal streak of his game that made him such a formidable midfielder. I always thought his passing was suspect, and that he dawdled on the ball a bit, but when he could break up the play and put in tackles of such brute force that it rocked the opposition’s midfield for the rest of the game, I could overlook the deficiencies in the game.

Now he has tempered that side of his game he looks like a sub standard player. Bring back the Tiote of old Mr Pardew, let him off the leash.

  • 78 Transfer Sage // Dec 17, 2012 at 6:53 PM

Very good article ed, great idea to see what most people find a problem.

    Unfortunately I cannot vote.

I find all if these and issue and it is difficult to say which is the bigger factor. I think all have played a part.

Injuries are inevitable so no issue there

Players are playing below potential, so that’s a problem for me

Pardew isn’t get things spot on as far as I can see but it’s difficult for him, doing the same as last year just getting different results

Ashley hasn’t invested enough…that’s the one problem that can be put right instantly in January. This is the only quick fix, all the other pollens take time and a bit of luck to sort out.

So if I went for anything it would be blaming Ashley….but still think other things are a factor

  • 79 jimmysmith // Dec 17, 2012 at 6:54 PM

I think we failed to bring in a really top winger and as result we can’t set up the team effectively. We got away with Ba playing wide for a while but understandably he doesn’t want to sacrifice his own long term best interests by continuing to play there.

I’ve seen calls for Marv to play wide, but he like HBA is really a number 10. The problem is one of balance. Santon bombing forward helps but his final delivery needs work, nor has Simmo’s or Gutis final ball been effective. I think a genuine winger, who can go outside and deliver a cross or cut inside and shoot is our greatest priority.

Tiote’s second half performance was an improvement, but he is still nowhere near the player he used to be. Compared to his other performances this season I can see why people are happier with his second half against City, but it still was a poor performance in my eyes, miles behind Anita’s display, not even as solid as Willo’s performance.

  • 82 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Dec 17, 2012 at 6:57 PM

Catchy….here is my response to you earlier…

Ibizatoon – Back by popular demand // Dec 17, 2012 at 4:41 PM

Jonas…I’m not saying Jose made him the player he was, but their understanding allowed him to be. Since Joses departure, Jonas has had to cover LB more as we either had Raylor who isn’t a LB or a young Italian learning his way. Obviously they needed more help than Jose did.

Cabaye has been carrying an injury this season, that is the truth of it. As for last season, you’re probably right in that he’s better in an advanced role and now Anita is here he should be allowed to move forward, let’s see how Pardew deals with him when he’s back.

Obertan – Okay, you see no improvement, i see a little, but not enough to make it worth arguing over 🙂

Perch – I agree, in defense I worry. As a CDM he has greatly improved. When he arrived it was always “groan – Perch is being played, god help us”, now it’s not the case. Surely he has improved?

As for him or Tiote being subbed, not too fussed either way, pros and cons to both.

Cisse – I did credit the idea of both form and positioning, but you seem to have conveniently skipped past that point 🙂 Even when he has played at a ST he has looked far from the player of last season. Not saying he’s bad or anything near that, but he does seem off form, even when played in his rightful position. I do agree though, it is pointless playing him on the wing, if you don’t want him up front, bench him. Simple.

I wasn’t being rude by not clicking the links, i do get what you’re saying, on paper we had teams out in all of those games that should have won against the opposition. You think it’s solely down to Pardew, I think some will be tactics / subs (Pardew) and some down to uncommitted performances from the players.

    Anyway…Pardew In!

I think you’re changing facts to suit your arguments, from what we are led to believe although Anita can play both sides as FB he was given assurances that his position was CM,I’m no expert but the football knowledge I do have tells me that if teams don’t freshmen up they stagnate ,most people agree that the lack of investment can’t be the only reason but it is a factor and for you to say that we only needed to buy a CB takes away the credibility of some of your more valid points.

Yup, you’re right, if Pards can’t see this then he clearly is nothing more than a puppet! How dare he attempt to develop Tiote’s game!

I understand why Pards wanted to try and expand Tiote’s game but he will never create a pass master out of him, so the time has come to let him do what he does best. With Anita and Cabaye alongside him it will be easier to let him play that role as he’d have two capable passers alongside him.

You’re view on the Wigan game is fundamentally flawed. In what sense of the word did we get out played by them? Other than a 10 minute spell in the second half when they played a bit of football we dominated them. You may choose to disagree but I think I will find more who agree with me on this score than you.

Swansea and West Ham were two very poor home games and Southampton was an example of how disastrous we’ve been at times this season. Pardew has to shoulder some of the responsibility, yes, but not the full blame. The players were inept and showed little fight or desire for the team in any of the games mentioned and they too need to take some of the flack for it. You can say that 100% of the desire and fight is down to the manager but I will disagree on this too.

Just to gauge your opinion. If you have to spread out the responsibility for where we are this season, in percentage, how much to blame is Pardew?

what goes on on the pitch has got nothing to do with the manager the manager picks the team the formation subs and HT talk.
but it is the players who determin how we do during play.
so of the thing the players have done this season no manager would ever want
    here is a few examples
santon at time getting too far forward
jonas going into CM making cabaye play out wide
    tiote getting booked
    defenders never marking their men
these are all down to the players them selves

the main things pardew is the culperit of are
    making subs too late
playing a forward out wide in a 4-3-3 rather than just playing 4-4-2
and not dropping poor performers when he had the chance

the cisse point,, for me like you say, its either ba or cisse esp when he wants to play defensive football, its a total waste having him on the pitch as a right winger, has has niether the skill or speed to go past players,, he is a finisher, and a good one,
his shot v man c in the first few mins is his game,, quick bals into the box,, he made the keeper work, the pass from anita, was class for the other chance, but he snatched at it,, that is confidence,, how does he get confidence playing out wide

im asking the question because ,, the manager picks the team yet he seams to be un qustionable by some,

low moral,, who is the one we have to ask for that

porr tactics who can i ask about that,

for me its down to one guy, he has the job of picking the best 11 avail to win a match, his best 11 might always be the best 11 in your squad, you may have to pick other players to get the job done

I agree that pardew is under performing in his role this season. But not as drastically as you do.

I think a fair target with this squad and the injuries we have would be around 10/11th.

It’s difficult to say where we could be if we signed because its all ifs and buts, depends who was signed, if they settled, if they stayed fit, Etc

But I do believe that if the defenders we needed were signed we would be safely in the top ten.

Not sure if the quality of football would be better mind you, but we would be more solid and therefore probably pick up more points

  • 116 willowdalerez // Dec 17, 2012 at 7:31 PM

It is clear Shearer was right. Pardew said as much himself last April:

“In terms of the expectations and the amount of finance that was spent in the summer… I have got to be honest, I think we have punched above our weight and long may that continue.”

Again in the summer of 2012 we were tight with the finances and as one might expect hoping to continue punch above one’s weight is one thing… outcomes are another.

Now we need to spend in the transfer window to lock down a decent midtable finish.

  • 117 Tsunki // Dec 17, 2012 at 7:31 PM

Catchy you are a real glass half empty guy, only without the glass.

I can’t see how anyone who is not on the pitch during play can stop a defensive error. Pardew couldnt get Santon to react quickly enough to keep the ball from going over the line, nor make him mark Nasri more astutely. Nor could he make overrule Colo’s split-second indecision that played Nasri onside and compromise Santon’s positional play (nods to Transfer Sage), nor could he stretch Cisse into connecting better with his chance, or get santon to try a far post shot instead of the near one… These are a few things that would have swung the game. City were far from looking like Champs at times and hoofball wasnt the key, nor shoddy tactics. Thats why the lads were actually applauded off.

Pardew didn’t change Jonas’ game, it could simply be a result of the fact that he isn’t just the same player any more, not as fit, not as quick, lost a bit of mental agility. Cannot see how you can blame Pardew for Jonas’ game.

I do agree with you that it must be either Ba or Cisse, if we had more options out wide we may see Ba or Cisse rotated, but Obertan has been injured, HBA has been injured, Marv isn’t a winger, when he’s played well this season it’s been down the middle. So in that sense Pards is forced to try and fit the two into the team by playing Cisse out wide.

The tactics aren’t poor, he has dropped 4-4-2 that people have been calling for, and has used a 4-3-3/4-5-1 that people have been calling for, and by and large the performances have been better on a tactical side of things, so I disagree with you there.

I really feel like I am wasting my time on you, as you make no concessions at all, even when you are most definitely wrong.

We had a 2 goal lead that was in no way under threat for 50 mins, and then we added a third.

Wigan hardly ever threatened the goal, they created nearly nothing in the final third and the reason we didn’t really push forward is because we didn’t need to. Why waste energy when the game was already won?

  • 123 Jail for Ashley // Dec 17, 2012 at 7:38 PM

I’m not sure where the Jonas’ “playing out of his position” debate came from. Yes he’s played CDM a few times but he’s stayed on that left hand side for the most part, as he did last year. But he just isn’t attacking.

He’s always been kind of a sissy when being put in a physical situation, but he was least able to sprint down and put a cross in. Now Fergie has usurped that role since Jonas doesn’t seem to care.

  • 129 jimmysmith // Dec 17, 2012 at 7:44 PM

Ruddy, I realise that, but I think he is at the heart of the problem and while I’m far from calling for his removal I think the problem is to a large degree one of management no matter how you look at it. For example, Pardew really needs to push hard now to get the reinforcements we need. He can’t allow the side to be shortchanged by the owner again.

For once I agree with you, YES Pardew should have been setting up these tactics back when we played Southampton, Stoke, Swansea, etc. My only guess is he was devoting too much time to EL games and was complacent about that string of games vs. mid-table, bottom table sides.

It obviously wasn’t fatigue because he made 8+ changes to the squad between Europa League and EPL games.

but to some degree, thats what man c did to us,,

at times they were untouchable , in the second they gave us the ball, we had 55 % against them and but i think they could have turned it on at anytime against us

they could have been 5-0 up at half time

at the end of the day, it was a loss, we expected a loss, and but for bad finishing, should have been worse

  • 134 89Norcal // Dec 17, 2012 at 7:49 PM

Hard to say, most the fans and the staff seem to be behind Pardew. If he hadn’t signed an 8 year deal, or we had consistent healthy players I would say yes, his job is in jeopardy. But seems like everyone is using common sense for now, and sees he’s improving our tactics.

  • 135 Transfer Sage // Dec 17, 2012 at 7:49 PM

I agree we have been cautious.

When pardew said he really needs to attack man city I was confused.

That was the one of a couple of games where you think it would be acceptable to defend an try to contain them then counter.

He should have had that attacking attitude against west ham, Swansea, Fulham, etc

  • 136 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Dec 17, 2012 at 7:50 PM

You say he “can’t allow the side to be shortchanged by the owner again”

I think he was banging on the door for a RB and CB over the summer and was let down by the powers that be. In much the same light, he is probably demanding the same, if not more, from the powers that be in this window.

If they don’t back him I can’t see how Pardew can be held responsible.

We’ve performed best against top sides when we press the attack. We’ve done it vs Chelsea, ManU, and Arsenal and our chances are always promising.

Remember just that last game vs. Arsenal last season where we conceded in the dying moments of the game. But besides that it’s effective.

  • 140 toonking // Dec 17, 2012 at 7:53 PM

    catchy read the full post
i also said any manager (that includes pardew) would never tell a FB to be playing too high up the pitch
any manager (that includes pardew) would never tell a player who is meant to be on the wing to go out of position and and move another player in his position which was the case with jonas who pushed cabaye out wide
and any manager would tell defenders to mark his players which colo and willo did not do
these are the players own responsibilty
also pardew is not the person responsible for squad depth being so poor that is down to the owner

  • 141 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Dec 17, 2012 at 7:53 PM

The really worrying thing for me is the lack of quality throughout Newcastle United. From the boardroom to the u18’s it seems we just have nothing to look forward to.

The u21’s and u18’s are getting beat as often as the first team and it doesnt seem that our ‘5 year plan’ is going to work!

Sod the next 8 years, the next 10, 20, 50, 100 years look at risk if something doesnt give.

We truthfully are in a pickle.

  • 147 LGFUAD21 // Dec 17, 2012 at 8:01 PM

I echoed Shearer’s thoughts in the summer. We had a great platform that we should have built on but that is only half the issue here and not even the biggest half.

The problem is that the players we do have need coaching into a cohesive unit that can play fluidly like any good team. Tactically we are all over the shop,

2 of the same strikers with the effect of 1 on the field.

A winger that is taught to perpetually defend and do nothing to attack.

A lack of goals from midfield and indeed a lack of a midfield push to get up combined with desperation in our play.

We played well against city in my opinion. No worse than we did at the end of last season. W would be happy with that if we hadn’t lost all those games before hand.

Hopefully we can turn it around against qpr. And a performance like the weekend could be enough to get something out of arsenal in their current form to be honest

  • 148 Grafton83 // Dec 17, 2012 at 8:01 PM

In reply to Munster Mag much earlier on I’d like to say that I am still pro Ashley, I still think he saved us from going bankrupt and I still support his transfer policy. He is doing a very good job imho.

We have under performed because of injuries and inept coaching/tactics (set pieces in particular) thank goodness we didn’t also over spend and panic buy. For me I take a lot of comfort knowing we are on a sound financial footing.

I know I’ll get abuse for this post but even if we’d bought in 2 or 3 extra players we’d still be struggling because, formation, player egos, tactics, substitutions, complacency, poor coaching and injuries would still have mucked us up.

I blame Pardew, those 8 year contracts and the manager of the year award for our slump. It doesn’t mean I’d sack him though. I think he’s on a steep learning curve and I have every confidence he’ll guide us through these bad times and be a better manager for it.

You also shouldn’t under estimate how confidence and momentum propelled us up the table last year. We were riding the crest of a wave a repeat of that season was always going to be unlikely. Nothing wrong with top half and a good cup run or two, that’ll do me fine.

  • 149 jimmysmith // Dec 17, 2012 at 8:02 PM

He needs to find a way to get a reluctant owner to spend if he wants to manage the team successfully, he needs to influence Ash’s mindset. That seems to be a reality of his job.

  • 150 Beattie25 // Dec 17, 2012 at 8:02 PM

If you think that signing 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 players is going to do anything to turn the horrible direction we are going in around is sadly mistaken.

The entire club needs a sufficient cash injection to improve the entire squad, from top to bottom.

We might scrape through this season with a 17-10th place finish but we have severed an attery and only an amputation can stop the rot.

It is pointless to ask what the contributing factor is to this poor season, everything is wrong with our club.

  • 151 LGFUAD21 // Dec 17, 2012 at 8:03 PM

I hate to say it because I like the guy and but I think Pards is the problem in the long run.

  • 152 LGFUAD21 // Dec 17, 2012 at 8:04 PM

And if Pards wants the signings he should be a bit more aggressive, Ashley will be reluctant to get rid of him after tying him to an 8 year deal, too costly and it would unsettle all of pard’s French men

Sometimes I wonder just how much credit MA should get for our finances. I feel most owners could accomplish that, when you sell a local player for 35m and barely reinvest any of that.

Yes MA is a good businessman, but this is the wrong business for him.

  • 155 p // Dec 17, 2012 at 8:08 PM

    Europe, simple as that.

All teams that have not been consistently in Europe for years struggle to find the rhythm of preparing for the games, handling squad rotation etc.

Less injuries, better form and a couple of good additions in the Summer would have improved the situation but we were always going to struggle.

Look at Man City, even they struggled with Europe this year.

  • 156 Grafton83 // Dec 17, 2012 at 8:11 PM

LGFUAD21 – Agree, if Pards was sacked it would be very disruptive. I don’t think it would the right move or even a fair one at this moment in time. He is a big part of the problem though and needs to show he can turn his around. I think he is trying though, he will put the effort and the hard miles in whereas some other managers would be giving up, blaming everyone else and hoping someone else can fix everything.

  • 157 LGFUAD21 // Dec 17, 2012 at 8:12 PM

Catchy…I do wish you’d stop taking a small part of what I say and portraying it as me agreeing with you. Jonas knew what Enrique was about and what he could do, so he was able to do his job better. The new LB’s (Raylor and Santon) haven’t been able to do the same as of yet, so guti’s had more work to do. Is that really so hard to understand or accept? It may not be the whole issue, but it’s part of it, even if it pains you to admit Pardew isn’t 100% to blame.

  • 162 toonicle // Dec 17, 2012 at 8:19 PM

I don’t think it’s any one thing. This summer was a great chance to attract some good talent, especially in defense, to the club after our great finish last year. Now, we could very well be looking at a relegation fight if things don’t get better real soon. No one wants to sign up with a club just to have that to look forward too. but it’s also Pardew being afraid to change things up, especially in the Ba/Cisse situation. He’s afraid of upsetting Ba and then having him leave so he is left wasting Cisse on the wing where he doesn’t really do all that much good. I say let Ba go, get what we can for him, and stick Cisse back in the middle. He will start firing in goals once Pardew shows confidence in him.

Now I love Newcastle and I love supporting them but would I give away £100m+ to the club. It’s very easy for us to sit here and say we would but in reality I think you have to appreciate that big amounts of money like that from a non supporter are significant.

Why why why would you abandon a winning formula. One that took us from a good season to borderline 4th place. The close season every NUFC fan was so optimistic. We had a dynamic team and a specatcular finisher up front.

Then pre season Pardew comes out with the “90% of the time Ba will play central” quote. At the time it was surprising, but I thought that we would see the 2 boys up front with HBA roaming in behind. Cabaye pulling the strings and basically adding 2 or 3 quality players to cement our spot in the top 6 or so.

But from match 1 he has looked after Ba, and basically shafted Cisse. That lad plays anywhere asked, and his work rate is phenomenal. Over the last few games he has been winning the ball near our box, and then when we have attacked he has been the only one in the box!!!

Saturday, he shot after 2 minutes (which was a great effort) and he fell as he hit it. Who was the first one trying to get onto the rebound? Cisse! Ba was next to Cisse for the shot and he stood with his hands on his hips. I am sure that Papiss is showing all the signs of a top striker still. But it is blatantly obvious that he needs a vote of confidence.

If Pardew can’t see that he is pandering to one player and ruining 2 or 3 others then he is a fool.

I meant to say on the end of that comment, that I wonder if the board put any pressure on Pardew? As in, playing players to sort contracts, or play them when you are wanting them in the shop window?

I just think that Pardew has done some things that don’t make sense, from anyone who knows football at any level. Surely there is input from other sources?

By the way I don’t think Pardew is completely to blame, and I sure as hell don’t want him sacked, but there are some things I find very frustrating that don’t make much sense :/

  • 178 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Dec 17, 2012 at 8:56 PM

Never thought I’d see the day but I agree with you totally. MA has let Pards down in the summer, while he has done some good in the past, he did let AP down when we had built a good deal of momentum.

I do think though that to protect his investment he will correct this mistake and not replicate it. I do think that he is a man who never makes the same mistake twice and that this will be a one off season of “mediocrity”

  • 183 RonVanDam // Dec 17, 2012 at 9:03 PM

Lack of investment in new players, less competition within the team for spots thus players getting complacent and performing below par.

Injuries wouldnt have had much impact if we had brought in 4 quality first team players and maybe 2-3 fringe players.

Europe shouldnt be a excuse, had we qualified for CL, will we use that as a excuse?

Pardews tactics and choice of players for the first team. We played the first 12 PL games in 4-4-2 fomation, players like Jona’s getting games ahead of Marv. Pardews excuses, if a coach makes excuses before a match is played, he’s concided defeat even before the team has taken the field. That negative energy trickles down to the players whom in turn play with a defeated mindset.

  • 184 sirtoongospel // Dec 17, 2012 at 9:05 PM

Ruddy, being totally honest it is the mis-use of Cisse predominantly. Putting him on the right wing is baffling. If you want a winger, then play a winger. If you want Cisse, then play him where the number on his shirt says he should be playing. Same with HBA. If you ran the NUFC team, would you have HBA and Cisse tracking back constantly? I’ll be buggered if I would. They would be left to hurt the opposition.

He also seems to start games set up to defend and stop the opposition, it doesn’t work, we fall behind, and he changes it. By which time a third of the game is gone and we are chasing our tails.

So that’s basically it Ruddy, feel free to tear a strip off me!!!

  • 185 lesh // Dec 17, 2012 at 9:06 PM

Although I opted for lack of quality strengthening in the summer window, each of the reasons suggested by Ed are inextriably linked.

I’m sure many of you guys have managed people in some way and ylou will of course know that people need to be and feel motivated to perform at their best. Our current predicament is a prime example of the result of mismanaging the club and in particular the players.

We did as Shearer says, punch ablve our weight last seson and surprised many – as a result, everyone at the club would be looking forward to moving on…. up.

Names of potential incomers were bandied about, Pardew di, I believe, believe that players were coming in and we all remember his clearly visible frustration when apart from Anita, they didn’t! The players would have seen that, they would have perecived that as a lack of ambition from the club. Llambias tried to explain it away as the selling clubs pi$$ing about – crikey, just what’s he paid for? He was clearly out of his depth and more concerned with the profit and loss account at the time – clearly oblivious to the effect his lackof spending would have on the players remaining, the manager, the fans and, and this is the irony which he has again failed to recognise that points mean places and where are we sitting now? Fifteenth, five form the bottom and 11 from the fifth of last season. Points mean places and places mean pounds, £800k per place! What a clown!!!!

Injuries have impacted on our performances and that’s because we do not have the quality in depth to allow for adequate cover for all positions. So, when our purple players are out, we’ve no purples to cover, but players who are not as good. What the heck was expected…. miracles?

Poor performances – poor performaces from palyers who do have the talent but may well have lost their drive, may well have felt their respect for Pardew diminish….. why? Because of the lack of summer spend on qulaity players that would move the club on, when the momentum was their to be exploited.

As far as the coaches are concerned, Pardew and his colleagues are human and the sickening lack of meaningful investment that would move the club on, would have sickened him too.

As far as MA’s concerned, he wouldn’t have appointed an MD in Llambias if he didn’t want him to manage the affairs of the business and I don’t believe he’d have the time to be as hands on as many think.

So, where does the buck stop? Clue, his first name begins with a D and his surname with a letter between K and M.

Let’s hope that MA is concerned and tha Llambias has been told in no uncertain terms to give Pardew what he wants, within reason of course becaule the cost of relegation will be dear., to say the least.

    There now, rant over!

Sirtoon…That is why I struggle with Catchy. It may not have been beautiful Barcelonaesque football, but come on, talk about expectations. The guy never had a chance from day one with certain people and it’s really not fair. This season has been a right shambles, I can see that even from the most optimistic viewpoint and that’s giving people an opportunity to act like they’re completely justified when really nothing has been proven other than there have been various f**k ups that need to be addressed, some quicker than others.

We’re not buying success, so it will take time and there will be wrong turns.

Tearing a strip of you was not my intention at all, just trying to gauge your opinion.

I think we lack quality wingers/fit wingers which is forcing Pards to try Cisse at RW. We only have Obertan and HBA who can play RW and both of those have suffered from injury, and even with HBA fully fit, I would rather play him behind either 2 strikers in a 4-1-2-1-2 or behind 1 striker in a 4-2-3-1, that’s where he is probably best.

I agree that I think he is pandering to Ba and if that is the case he should be moved on asap, Cisse should be used up top and specialist wingers should be brought in on top of the much needed defenders.

All that seems like it is going to take time to implement unfortunately.

    Transfer speculation:

Debuchy: Not happening due to his age now and what he has recently said in the media. Ashley will never spend on something without a sell on value unless it was worth it such as Cisse.

Mbiwa: Not happening, recently signed an contract extension, we could of gotten him in the Summer but Ashley said he didn’t want to spend that much on a good defender.

Douglas: It is more likely to happen due to him being a free agent very soon.

Sissoko: Looks like its a done deal, but will he really come in the next window or will he first see if the club is going to spend for the ambition of staying up or going back to being a top mid table club?

Remy: Cant really say anything about this, unless Ba leaves its not likely though even if we are in for this player.

Gameiro: A player which was suppose to come here but barely gets any game time at PSG. He may want to come to us and may re-think since he is ruining his career on the bench at PSG.

Eric Pieters: He is young, still has allot of potential but not the experience needed. We may go in for him as a future player.

Toby Alderweireld: Excellent defender, every-time I have seen him play solid at the back and at young age. Allot of potential in future, think he can adopt to our league easier and will take less time or equal time as Anita.

    Other players we are linked with;

    Andrew Carroll Liverpool
    Tom Ince Blackpool
    Jeremain Lens PSV Eindhoven
    Modou Sougou CFR Cluj
    Seydou Doumbia CSKA Moscow
    Gary Hooper Celtic
    Riechedly Bazoer PSV Eindhoven

We had recently sent scouts to Galatasaray’s game against Gaziantepspor.

I can only hope that it was Semih Kaya Graham was watching, one of the best up and coming CB’s in Europe and has had Van Persie and Cristiano Ronaldo in his back pocket in games for Turkey against Holland & Portugal respectively. Other talents in Galatasaray squad include Emre Colak, Serdar Yildirim. But right now Semih Kaya is a very good defender and has proven himself in the champions league as well. Hope we get him in!

  • 193 sirtoongospel // Dec 17, 2012 at 9:20 PM

Yeah Ibiza I know what you mean. I really want to stay positive but everyone finds it difficult at the minute i think.

The 4 things mentioned in this article have contributed in my opinion. I would say the failure to add players is nearly 50% of it, the rest split evenly.

I get the impression that Pards was close to playing the football he wanted last year, then when we didn’t bring players in, it’s almost as though he abandoned his plan. If i didn’t know better i would say he is playing a mish mash to prove a point to Ashley!!

My sincere hope though, is that we buy 2 defenders and a really dominant CM player (not just a tackler), someone who can drive us forward. If Ba leaves in January and a player like Remy comes in then I really feel that we will play with more tempo. Ba has scored goals but he really slows us down in general play. Tiote is too ponderous as is Jonas. If we replaced 2 of these at least, and Cabaye and HBA are fit, with Cisse up front, surely we would be transformed?

  • 194 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Dec 17, 2012 at 9:21 PM

Our league position won’t be great come mid January I fear hopefully it doesn’t impact too much on signings if we can come across as ambitious in the long run, depends on the ambitions of the owner I suppose.

I do think we will see 2 players at the very least come through in January but Sage seems to think that it will be 3 maybe 4 come through but I don’t share that kind of enthusiasm it pays to be optimistic I suppose (unless you’re a NUFC fan of course)

I still think we’re capable of mid table, so we can write this season off and move forward.

I was only joking! and you are right regarding wingers. While we havent got them though I wish we would set up to work the channels. Cisse can do it all day if we do it quickly.

HBA, Anita, Cabaye, Marveaux, they are all super footballers. We should use them.

If Cisse was to be played up front then his smile would return, and on the back of that, 52,000 others would be smiling too. Because we would win!!

  • 197 Graeme // Dec 17, 2012 at 9:28 PM

Sir toon, but at the end of last season, it could easily be said (and was by many on here) that we were possibly 3 or maybe 4 players away from being a superb team. One that would even be able to challenge for top four spot.

Its down to FCB and Lame arse that it didnt happen for reasons only they know. It had nothing to do with Pardew, the coaches whatsoever. As far as I can see, nothing more than a complete lack of ambition, keeping the money in the bank!!!

  • 198 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Dec 17, 2012 at 9:29 PM

To play Cisse up front by himself there is only one option. Sell Ba.

I’d warmed to the idea over the last few weeks, now I am absolutely certain that it is what needs to be done in order to get the fluency in our final third once again.

  • 199 sirtoongospel // Dec 17, 2012 at 9:30 PM

Oh, and mid table and a right good go at the Europa league would do me. As you say, show some ambition now and we can save what good work has been done. If he doesn’t, then it will be hard to get back to where we were when 4 or 5 leave.

  • 200 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Dec 17, 2012 at 9:32 PM

Sirtoon…..Well we are human and not immune to fear. Can’t imagine anyone is enjoying being this close to the bottom 3. I’ve thought a lot about it, as I’m sure most of you have to and I do believe it will turn around. If it was over and Pardew had lost the dressing room, the Man City game would have been a cricket score. There is still unity in that team, they’re clearly lacking confidence though.

Anita has really impressed me lately. Has a great attitude on the pitch. No nonsense, just looking to work and work well. Great stuff and a shining light when a lot’s looked suspect.

If Ba is causing problems behind the scenes then he will be moved on. That will be okay but only if someone comes in and they need to be able to contribute or create goals. If not, we will miss Ba badly.

I think you’re right with where the team is heading, but I think the process to get there will very much be step by step and not done over a window or two, as we have seen. That might mean losing one or two along the way, which is frustrating, but as long as it’s going in the right direction I can handle that. Saying that I don’t expect them to let the same happen as they did this summer, nice idea chaps, but it didn’t work. I was up for it at the time, thinking we’d be okay until January and could then kick on once more, but they and I were wrong. We need to sort some key areas first and that is in defense. We have the attacking players already, that if they were left to attack would do us just fine for now, even Jonas and any other out of favour attacking player. We have time for that area imo, defense is a must. I want to see a CB and a FB arrive, anything else is great, but can wait for me.

Reading trying to do a Newcastle? Oh Cheik. I can understand why he keeps trying to get that goal again.

Graeme i agree, it’s the biggest factor of our decline, but Pards has still made some strange decisions.

A good January, with a CB, RB, and CM in, we would be flying. The striker could wait if Ba stays, but I don’t think he will. And to be honest, I hope he leaves.

  • 203 sirtoongospel // Dec 17, 2012 at 9:37 PM

yeah RB and CB crucial, and with Tiote going to ACON and Cabaye injured, we could probably do with a CM in. Sissoko for the money mentioned seems like cracking business.

The farce of the summer transfer window has been the problem, we as fans feel we were let down, the players must also feel the same after the great season they had.
Pardew knew what was required and promised we would add quality to the team, a blind man on a galloping horse could see where we needed to strengthening. If we had added 3 quality signings without selling any so called purple players we could have challenged the top four, I think Ashley has shown his ambition for the club is nowhere near the fans expectations and the players now feel the same. They want to win things in their career, can they achieve it with this owner? I’m sure they would love to play in front of 52000 every home game and know the club has the same ambition as them.

  • 211 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Dec 17, 2012 at 9:48 PM

    I see our U 21s have been destroyed 5-1 by Southampton U 21s.

Interesting thing is that I saw Curtis Good named in the Newcastle U 21 line-up. I thought he was on loan to Bradford was he not?

  • 212 irishtoon999 // Dec 17, 2012 at 9:48 PM

I think its mainly the fact that the top players are’nt performing, Krul is not even a quarter of the player he was, never looks comfortable anymore between the sticks, last season he used to read the game so well and was always in the right position, but now there is a way to many sneaking passed him. But its prob a combination of all listed thats gone against us… That said, its hard to believe how spectacular wrong its gone.. Also, the constant negative press we get does’nt help, if ya keep telling someone ur bad and should not be winning, u will eventually start to believe it.. example, all the press summed up Mancity as having “easilly beating Newcastle”, and they kept last season that it wudnt last…

  • 219 ToonBano // Dec 17, 2012 at 10:18 PM

The main reason for Newcastle Utd performing badly is down to Alan Pardew not knowing his best team.

This includes the system, the strategy and which players to pick in which position.

Its almost half way through the season and he STILL doesn’t know it. He is still changing it at half time or as soon as 27 mins like at Fulham.

  • 220 NUFC FOR SALE // Dec 17, 2012 at 10:28 PM

    its blatantly obvious the reason

as Shearer said we didn’t strengthen at the right time

the squad was demoralised from day 1 of this season as they knew the club lacked ambition

you can’t underestimate the effect it has on your team when you do not show intent in the transfer window

as a result players like Cabaye, Colicini, Jonas, Krul, Cisse, Ben Arfa, Tiote have all looked jaded

they haven’t become bad players over night but they now know they’re playing for a club that doesn’t want to achieve anything except a clean bank balance

i wouldn’t blame any player wanting to leave this club

all of those players i mentioned are too good to stick around at a club happy to mill around the also rans every season

the summer transfer window is testament again to the fact we have owners with absolutely no idea how to run a football club, a business maybe but not a football club

  • 221 Lee Dodd // Dec 17, 2012 at 10:28 PM

The Main reason – Well It has To Be Lack of Depth in the Squad and to Many Injurys . We needed Best Guthrie and Peter Lovenkrands This season . They were Let Go and No One Taken In. 3 Kids are no Good. Anita Marvaux Abeid for me are to Little for the premier league. we Need Bigger Players and Quality Players. How is it Other Teams Get Players on Loan we cant. They go to Swansea or west ham or some were. How is it we cant Sign Players because of some daft reason Like Majer ??? were does he go Bloody West Ham What the Hell is Going ON !!!! Andy Carroll Wants to come Home were does he go West Bloody Ham !!!!! Mike ashly is Running The NUFC Like Sports Direct . There is no need to panic. Rome was not built in a day. We came 5th last season and the same players will steer us to safety in the new year. We do not need to but substandard players in Jan. We should stick with what we have. I expect a minimum of 8th spot with these same players. We should buy in the summer when the players cost less. Jan buys are always a panic purchase. keep the faith in Alan and Mike.

  • 227 beefman13 // Dec 17, 2012 at 10:55 PM

Lets nt forget AP himself says he begged MA to keep the main team together from last season as they he said deserved there shot.

How many on here said certain first team players would go in the summer, quite a few, so AP gets his wish, as he said that was the biggest and best news for NUFC in the summer.

When your running the club as a business as we are things have to be balanced out, so while there were rumours of some of our top players going ,none did.

Can you have it both ways maybe not when the club is being run as it is, i have quite big reservations concerning Alan Pardew if im honest no pun intended.

I still dont like thew way he sets our team up and his fav purples wont get dropped if fit, ive looked through it and he just wont do it, to the detriment of the team imo

We have such a winnable game coming up lets take it to QPR get the crowd on our side from the off, it makes such a difference, play marv in a free role a bit like benny does, tell him to go and express himself, he has the skill to do it, we dont need two sitting defensive midfielders, it has been proven this season it is not working, get out the traps and attack the space in front at all times especially from midfield, produce quick ball from the back and lets get at them, it needs a good bloody shake, let some of our other players have a shot and good run in the team as some of the others have had more than a fair go and it is not working Alan.

  • 228 bill // Dec 17, 2012 at 11:13 PM

Every team that I can recall has had a relatively poor league performance when they enter the Europa Cup. I dreaded Newcastle qualifying for the tournament because it brings little prestige and even less cash.

Since Ashley was reluctant to spend money on the extra players necessary to compete in two competitions it was again obvious to me that we would struggle this year.

Add to this the fact that we over performed last year then unless you were blind, it was again obvious that the squad needed strengthening to get anywhere near last year’s success.

To say that the management of this club is totally inept is again an obvious statement, and I don’t mean AP.

  • 229 BWFFBW // Dec 17, 2012 at 11:17 PM

Wow, just Wow! Some fool or fools have blamed Tiote for our slump. Really? Have you been watching the same matches, without him we would be further in the hole! In fact he is the single reason we have been competitive in matches…

No one player deserves the blame for the slump, but we have a smaller squad and injuries have crushed us.

I blame MA unwillingness to spend in the summer and injuries that have hampered us in the EPL. It will be critical that we bring in at least 3-5 senior players this January. We can’t afford to lose any of our 1st team players… we must add to the 1st team in the winter, and then add again to lower ranks in the summer.

    All the best Toon Fans!

If the players aren’t happy they need to speak out. All we ever here is Pardew spouting the usual company line, and his favorite players (Willo as an example) talking in the press about the hard work and good dressing room atmosphere.

We can all tell that something is amiss and as I’ve said even if Ba is made a scapegoat, hounded out of St James’s Park and made into another Barton at least we hear the truth.

It’s good to see some posters still awake. I have a question for you all. Fellani has just received a 3 match ban for an intentional headbutt, now do you believe the punishment matches the crime when considering other incidents that got a 3 game van, tiote v Sunderland for example? I believe it shouldn’t have the same punishment.

  • 245 Tsunki // Dec 18, 2012 at 12:12 AM

Nick – tiote’s was not premeditated but in the fire of a challenge, and intention more than damage was the yardstick. Fellaini plotted his revenge and exacted it, imo that is cynical to a greater degree. I also bring in the infamous Cabaye off-the -ball that the odious Stubbs crusaded for, made to look worse in slo-mo and turned a non-event into an undeserved ban. The sweet FA cannot get anything right.

  • 246 jimmysmith // Dec 18, 2012 at 12:14 AM

I agree momentum has been lost as a result of not spending adaquately in the off season, and I think Pards was not forceful enough with Ash and co or was simply let down at the final hour, but I still think the clubs’ approach is essentially sound, just too prudent in hindsight. I don’t want to see panic buying in Jan nor do I think that will happen. I just don’t want to see the same mistakes repeated, an adjustment is all that’s required, it seems to me.

Simple the reason for the slump is pardew has been found out His tactics are wrong,He was riding his luck last year but now its run out.As for the Idiot ashley giving him an 8 year contract, Hope Pards walks or another F”ck up by ashley.Haughton is showing what a good manager he is now And I hope it sticks in ashleys throat.

  • 254 Sav // Dec 18, 2012 at 1:24 AM

Our development squad of young players don’t appear to be nearly as good as we’d like to believe. This is hardly Mashley’s fault and certainly not Pardew’s as these take years to establish and we have neglected this area for years. Even now we are well behind the Mackems and Smoggies and clubs like Southampton who gave the stiffs another hammering (5 – 1) yesterday.
What is Mashley’s fault is padding out the squad of 25 (we only had 22, I think?) with several of these youngsters and the likes of Xisco. They were basically making up the numbers and padding. In terms of actually stepping in without the team losing quality or momentum they have clearly not been good enough. At least it seems Pards is keen to see them loaned out to gain that vital experience which they can’t get sitting on the subs’ bench at SJP.
So ‘over-reliance on a group of mediochre youngsters’ could probably be added to your list of excuses for this year’s failure to build on last season.

I thought the Fellaini decision is shocking – I was expecting a ban of at least 6 games- especially when there were three incidents of him assaulting another player. When compared to other players offences/bans there is no consistency – I smell a rat in this decision – “the old pals act” being applied. I previously posted about Fellaini elbowing people when jumping with them -this evidence suggests historically he may not be totally innocent but is a thug.

  • 258 89Norcal // Dec 18, 2012 at 2:32 AM

    Mister Tuff

I saw that news as it broke, they said Feillani wasn’t charged with the other incidents because they didn’t qualify as violent conduct.

My head was in my hands when I saw it was a 3 game ban 🙂

  • 259 t00ntime // Dec 18, 2012 at 2:54 AM

@mistertuff i agree, joey barton kneed someone and elbowed some one and got 12 games. fellani gets 3 for 2 headbutts and a punch… FA are pure bullsh**. i remember when rooney full on elbowed someone (nowhere near the ball) and FA said we cant ban him cause he got a yellow card for it…

  • 260 89Norcal // Dec 18, 2012 at 3:21 AM

The Telegraph reporting that we are in advanced talks with Loic Remy for a 10m transfer.

Pretty excited, but I wonder if Ba is really leaving? Surely we aren’t intending to have 3 top strikers.

Never trust a white guy with an Afro. Never!

  • 262 t00ntime // Dec 18, 2012 at 4:34 AM

    @89nocral i just saw that 😛
I was quite excited too but i’m not gonna get too excited cause we are apparantly also in advanced talkes with sissokho (and i’m finding it hard to believe 2 of our deals wud be in the open this early, they are normally hidden quite well (our deals))

Also we had signed debuchy like 3 times in the summer according
    To papers :S

  • 263 89Norcal // Dec 18, 2012 at 4:46 AM

    lol very true t00ntime

Tbh I’m shocked we would be considering 10m deals right now even with our current state of affairs. Could it be that MA has finally smelled the coffee?

  • 264 Indian Magpie // Dec 18, 2012 at 5:29 AM

according to talk sport we are also after Lucas Biglia

  • 265 Santon03 // Dec 18, 2012 at 6:39 AM

Can’t blame MA for transfers, because I never heard anything concrete that he doesn’t want to spend other than speculations. We did bought Cisse and Anita, we were willing to bid for DeJong for 15m, but some of the players we wanted are overpriced. I don’t blame him putting a wage cap, look at Saylor for example. Saylor now can’t play for the rest of the season same as last season and the club must pay the wages, another one is famous Sir Michael Owen, Alan Smith, Xisco, Ranger. Nobody can perdict that Saylor will be injured like last season again, even Douglas issue is quite confusing. I think we will bring in 3 or 4 new faces in January.
AP is the one to blame, based on current squad we should be 8 or 10 worst, because I think we have better quality than the some of the teams that beat us. AP has become complacent and take his of the pedal since he got 8 years contract, this is a mistake in judgement by MA. AP or any manager will feel safe and secure whatever the results are when offered 8 years contract, if the club decide to sack him, he will received big compensation, but I’m happy that MA reward Carr with 8 years contract. At least Carr still being professional about his job, not keep making excuses after excuses or telling people to see the positives all the time.

    yes, why?

Why is it super slow to load a comment today?

  • 271 Indian Magpie // Dec 18, 2012 at 6:56 AM

    No was just asking

  • 272 Santon03 // Dec 18, 2012 at 7:03 AM

I hope we sign Lucas, another Argentine. Hopefully new Redondo 😛

  • 273 Santon03 // Dec 18, 2012 at 7:06 AM

Lucas Biglia looks like a new Redondo, very good skill DM. Arsenal and Real also interested.

  • 274 Indian Magpie // Dec 18, 2012 at 7:10 AM

Only thing is he is almost 27, and ashley as he is

  • 275 Santon03 // Dec 18, 2012 at 7:14 AM

My new christmas wish is Biglia LOL
After watching youtube, he has the same exact moves like Redondo and he looks a lot like Redondo hahaha

  • 276 Indian Magpie // Dec 18, 2012 at 7:19 AM

Do you know, that Redondo declined wages at Milan when he was out injured.

    Unlike our modern day player

  • 277 Santon03 // Dec 18, 2012 at 7:22 AM

Yup, he doesn’t want to accept money for doing nothing. He is a real pro, but nowadays nobody do that anymore.
It’s good to know that I’m not the only one knew this fact 🙂

  • 278 Santon03 // Dec 18, 2012 at 7:29 AM

I only followed players like Beardsley and Redondo, not the team. That’s why I became NUFC fan when Beardsley joined NUFC. That was the great NUFC team, but now I only follow NUFC and Milan. I also like most Italian teams and Italian national team. Only follow NUFC for EPL, didn’t watch any EPL games when we got relegated, because they didn’t broadcast any Championship games.

  • 279 Indian Magpie // Dec 18, 2012 at 7:32 AM

I watched/ Followed 44 games while in CCC, Just 2 i did not follow were Coventry away and Preston Home.

  • 280 Indian Magpie // Dec 18, 2012 at 7:53 AM

All of you should read this

  • 281 Tsunki // Dec 18, 2012 at 8:20 AM

I agree with Indian – you should read that article. Its a fine example of a slanted opinion using flawed logic and speciously-extrapolated statistics. I expected something meaty and got a crab paste sandwich. Gah. Surprised at the Mag 🙁 could have actually made a better go of that with a bit more application.

  • 282 check the toastie // Dec 18, 2012 at 8:22 AM

Would love it if we got rid of Ba and played Remy on Left Benny on Right and CIsse up top.

Stil need a RB and CB though, no secret there.

All those looking forward to Cabaye coming back, dont be surprised if you never see the dream team of Cabaye Tiote and Anita in a midfield 3, Pardew should have played Cabaye, Tiote and Guthrie last year but bottled it by continuing to play Jonas Left Wing, or some other random place.

  • 283 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Dec 18, 2012 at 8:22 AM

Indian….All that article does is highlight that 8 years was over the top – big shocker.

Then he uses examples of players not playing the same as last year as proof. How is that definite proof? It’s taking 2+2 and hoping no one will notice the answer is actually 4 and not 5 as they suggest. Sloppy imo and doesn’t cover even half of the possible issues facing Newcastle.

  • 284 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Dec 18, 2012 at 8:29 AM

Tsunki…Put the time machine away and stop stealing me posts to create your own in the past. It’s pathetic.

Check…I still hope that once our defense is sorted, as we all know it needs to be, then we can afford to not have too many defensive minded midfielders….which is what I consider Tiote and Guti. I do find it hard to believe that Guti will be cast aside at the same time though, not sure what the future holds in that respect, he’s one of the big characters at the club by most accounts, but he’s slowly slipping down the pecking order.

  • 285 Conaldo (The Wizard...Also Bestest Friends With Paul Scharner) // Dec 18, 2012 at 8:35 AM

That article is the biggest pile of @&£* I’ve read all year. There is nothing to back up anything he says and he just rattles off (mostly incorrect) points one after another.

Thank god he’s not an actual journalist, they never publish anything like that… 🙂

  • 286 check the toastie // Dec 18, 2012 at 8:35 AM

Give the Mag some credit, these are the lads who actually go to every conceivable game that the club participates in, devote their life almost to following what has been a total soap opera for many years.

They have seen what i have seen, i squad team that is capable of much better, irrelevent of how much was invested in the summer we are grossly underachieving in terms of performance and results.

The buck stops with the manager.

QPR is a massive game for the club and supporters, i think we will win to be fair, we have shown more hunger in the last few games.

Jonas must be replaced for this game by Marv, Personally would stick him full back and throw Simmo in the Tyne.

  • 287 Conaldo (The Wizard...Also Bestest Friends With Paul Scharner) // Dec 18, 2012 at 8:36 AM

Check – it’s not the mag anyway, it’s one of the guest writers, anyone can write for them.

  • 288 89Norcal // Dec 18, 2012 at 8:38 AM

agree with you on Jonas, but still can’t understand why you and others dislike Simpson. Probably because he’s being called to be an attacking fullback when he isn’t one. But defensively we need him.

  • 289 MacToon // Dec 18, 2012 at 8:39 AM

“The move will also involve Rémy’s current club, Marseille, signing a Newcastle player, possibly one of their Frenchmen such as Gabriel Obertan who could be surplus to requirements at St James’ Park.”

  • 290 Rotonda heights // Dec 18, 2012 at 8:39 AM

God knows I have had endless frustations with pardew’s tactics, team selection and subs to name 3.

However, in the last 4 games starting with the Wigan game we do at least appear to be trying to pass the ball particularly through Anita a bit better which is a very welcome change. Anita is a diamond who some clowns were rubbishing early doors

If we can somehow get Debuchy, Douglas and Remy or similar quality and play football and especially more attacking football then I’ll hold my hands up.

They are saying it will be a swap with Marveaux or Obertan for Remy, but I thought we needed more players, not swaps, although I guess it would make sense.

Remy and Benny either side of Cisse in a 433 would be good to see back again.

  • 291 check the toastie // Dec 18, 2012 at 8:40 AM

89Norcal – it is a mystery to me, why anybody thinks that Simpson is good for our football team, i dont want to patronise, but in the stadium you can see the non movement and his total reluctance to get involved and it winds me right up.

And thats ignoring the fact his touch is shit and he cant cross for toffee.

  • 292 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Dec 18, 2012 at 8:44 AM

Check…Not trying to take away how much of a fan the writers are, but I do believe the view of that particular author is extremely single minded, which of course, he is entitled to be.

  • 293 Jail for Ashley // Dec 18, 2012 at 8:46 AM

Was expecting a well written article that maybe shed some new insight, but nothing we haven’t already seen on here from our more extreme posters.

  • 294 check the toastie // Dec 18, 2012 at 8:47 AM

Rotonda – i also will hold my hands up, and yes i have also seen a slight improvement, and it is mainly down to little Anita demanding the ball is played into his feet, the boy has balls and courage in abundance, was fantastic on Saturday.

  • 295 Rotonda heights // Dec 18, 2012 at 8:48 AM

Every time we build an attack on the right hand side and the ball goes to simpson, I turn away because you just know we will lose possession from the moment he
gets it. That in itself is a big enough reason.

That and the fact he backs off too much, shows inside too much, is spacially unaware, his head is elsewhere and there are way better out there. Played purely as a sweeper he is quite good, even though he doesn’t have the footballing ability to bring the ball out.

  • 296 89Norcal // Dec 18, 2012 at 8:48 AM

You’re right, he is a poor crosser, but imo he shouldn’t be an attacking fullback anyways. We seem to have pushed him in that role but with the amount of hustling he does on defense, he doesn’t have the fitness to do it.

When Simmo was injured a few months ago we were wide open on the right flank. I think we all remember Tavernier’s problems being thrown in there.

I’d rather have Debuchy too though.

  • 297 89Norcal // Dec 18, 2012 at 8:50 AM

Yes, I think that’s because of his added offensive role. That lazy marking on Zabaleta I think it was, in the City game, that was just pure fatigue. 5-10 minutes before City’s 3rd goal I saw Simmo struggling to make it up the pitch.

I think our LB’s should be attacking, if anyone.

  • 298 Jail for Ashley // Dec 18, 2012 at 8:55 AM

In response to you Smithers like defence of Mashley what f##k ups has he made since relegation apart from the stadium renaming of the stadium and the complete shambles of a transfer window, well considering you’re trying to make out that there hasn’t been any clangers since the relegation there two pretty big ones to throw in afterward, you could also cite the giving Dirk Llambias a free reign to spout his bile and strategical purple genius, giving Parts the first ever eight year managerial contract could be seen as a major f##k up beefman, lets see what he does in January.

  • 299 magpie rangers // Dec 18, 2012 at 10:16 AM

    Check the

“You can’t wait to get rid of ba”??
In doing that it’ll probably cut or odds or relegation from 8/1 now to 4/1.
I’m sick of reading that when cisse plays down the middle he’ll start scoring again, the bloke can’t hit a bar door at the moment, eg the sitter against city just after we scored, and I think it was demba that crossed the ball from the right for him.

People keep banging on about the 4-3-3 we played so well last season and why we’re not playing this because of dembe being selfish, are these people telling me the pardew is giving in to demba? Last season the 4-3-3 worked because the WHOLE team was playing well, not just one or two the only player who’s done himself justice this season is demba and some idiots want rid!!!
