Newcastle Close To Loic Remy Deal

8:49 am, Tuesday, December 18th, 2012 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 33 Comments

There are reports today that Newcastle are in advanced talks to get Marseilles striker Loic Remy through the door and on Tyneside in early January.

Loic Remy - Newcastle in advanced talks

And it seems that at least one player will go the opposite way so as we had suggested a few days ago it will be a part exchange deal with either Sylvain Marveaux or Gabby Obertan going the other way – and the likelihood is that Newcastle will let Marveaux go as part of the deal.

Newcastle were first linked with the player four years ago when he was still at Lyon, and before he went to Nice for a couple of years before signing for Marseilles in 2010.

We were linked with the player in the summer, but Newcastle didn’t bring in any new strikers, even though we were down the three experienced strikers after letting Leon Best and Peter Lovenkrands leave the club – and that’s one of the huge mistakes the Newcastle Board made in the summer.

Remy has a good record at Marseilles, having hit 39 goals in 95 appearances for the French club, and he would be a welcome addition to Newcastle’s squad.

Remy is a versatile player too as he can play out on the wing, or as a withdrawn striker, and with such an early move for the French international, you have to think that Demba Ba is on his way out of Newcastle.

That’s not good news for Newcastle, that one of our very best players will leave the club in mid-season – when we are in such trouble.

Comments welcome.

I’m just SLIGHTLY wary of this buy. I don’t watch Marsielle much, so I don’t know if he’s content as a winger.

But he’s a beast in my Fifa Ultimate Team :)

  • 2 DoddsyNufc // Dec 18, 2012 at 8:53 AM

Bring him in. If he is happy to play out wide then that can only be a good thing. We need players who are happy to play a team game. No doubt pardew will still play 442. We need players in early. I dont want to be sitting around weeks into january wondering what will happen. Ps Ba will not be as good in another team.

Always imagined this would be if Ba left, so if it does include a swap, we’d still need another ST or attacking winger as well.

I’d hope it wasn’t for Marveaux, certainly seems to have something, just haven’t been able to see if he can replicate it on a regular basis.

Obertan for Remy wont get too many complaints.

Norcal – I work 60% of the time in France and trust me mate – this lad is the real deal! A cracking player, more than happy and comfortable out wide and prolific ! Waking up to this news (if true of course!) is magic !

I also hear from the French contingent that the news on Debuchy (oh no not that name again!!!) has heightened and now Lille have no European football, and the toon looking to add more French stars such as Remy and Sissoko – he is more eager than ever to make the move.

Also the news on Diame is we are interested in the lad and will place a bid (which will be accepted due to the clause) however he is likely to stay at west ham until the summer. But you never know…

  • 5 TorqToon // Dec 18, 2012 at 8:59 AM

Also would rather we chuck in Obertan than Marv. I actually quite like gabby but as a makeweight in this deal I’d rather keep hold of Marv who has shown glimpses of pure quality.

    I watch Ligue 1

Remy did not play in Tolouse, and in one of their magazine shows they said that he looks a bit lost at OM. Needs a fresh challenge

    Torqtoon

Good news! Well that’s lifted me a bit. A Remy-Cisse-Ben Arfa frontline with Cabaye Anita and Tiote is definite class, we would be safe for sure and just might rescue the season, at least if Willo keeps up his stellar performances.

hope we get this kid and marvaux goes the other way cause hes really bad

    Torq….If true, that’s brilliant news.

  • 10 Jail for Ashley // Dec 18, 2012 at 9:01 AM

Beefman,In response to your Smithers like defence of Mashley ,what f##k ups has he made since relegation apart from the stadium renaming of the stadium and the complete shambles of a transfer window, well considering you’re trying to make out that there hasn’t been any clangers since the relegation there two pretty big ones to throw in afterward, you could also cite the giving Dirk Llambias a free reign to spout his bile and strategical purple genius, giving Parts the first ever eight year managerial contract could be seen as a major f##k up beefman, lets see what he does in January.
And as for your assertion that we’d be the next Leeds etc there is no proof only speculation by the likes of you to try and point out what Mike Ashes has done for this club.

  • 11 jimiley // Dec 18, 2012 at 9:01 AM

We do not need Ba. Who in their right minds would pay 80k a week for him? He is so overrated. Good to get Remy in. We do not need Marveaux either. Jonas is much better. We will have a stronger team with Remy.

  • 12 kt97toonarmy // Dec 18, 2012 at 9:02 AM

89 we will get better defenders i think

  • 13 TorqToon // Dec 18, 2012 at 9:02 AM

Indian – I also believe that to be true. And what better a challenge than turning around the toons 2013-13 season!

Seems we finally agree on something! :-)

  • 14 Shedzzzaa // Dec 18, 2012 at 9:03 AM

as much as i would hate to see BA go i dont think we should accomodating a formation just for him, we are playing with cisse and ba reveresed compared to last year just because ba wants to pall down middle.. remember no player is bigger than the team. also the lack of link up between cisse and ba is evident and playing a 4 3 3 with remy cisse and arfa up front would be a scary prospect.

  • 15 darrenfletcher88 // Dec 18, 2012 at 9:03 AM

    Total bill crap,won’t happen

  • 16 Indian Magpie // Dec 18, 2012 at 9:04 AM

    TorqToon

Absolutely. we can still get europe if we win Europa or FA cup

  • 17 Hatem's better than Messi // Dec 18, 2012 at 9:04 AM

Make that two of our best players if Marveaux is part of the Remy deal.

Marveaux looks to be real quality and this is really his first season as he was crocked all last year.

I hope we can just buy Remy.

Buy one Sell two! – Llambias’ wage-bill philisophy.

  • 18 TorqToon // Dec 18, 2012 at 9:06 AM

Kt97 – I hope so too ! Whilst Willo has served a purpose (kind of!) I think we need to stop with all the nonsense and upgrade. I posted a whole back about Yanga Mbiwa which as far as I’m aware is still possible. Failing that who would people want (realistically) as a top defender to bring in?

  • 19 WWYCD // Dec 18, 2012 at 9:07 AM

Wonderful and I actually do think that am a big admirer of Remy have been for a long time however sending Marv/Obertan in the other direction am not keen on we need more attacking players not the same number…unless of course its a loan deal such as the one with Mbia’s deal

Also hope this isn’t instead of some defenders (again).

  • 20 jimiley // Dec 18, 2012 at 9:08 AM

We will have a leaner and fitter squad if we can get Remy and ship out two.

  • 21 89Norcal // Dec 18, 2012 at 9:09 AM

    kt97

Yep I hope so. I would think the staff is waking up now and realizing we are in a perilous spot.

  • 22 Indian Magpie // Dec 18, 2012 at 9:09 AM

Also talk sport has us linked with Lucas Biglia

  • 23 WWYCD // Dec 18, 2012 at 9:11 AM

    Jimiley
Leaner fitter squad? I think we are about as lean as we can handle and I doubt we would be any fitter

  • 24 TorqToon // Dec 18, 2012 at 9:13 AM

Indian – Lucas Biglia Not heard much about him. Can you enlighten me please?

  • 25 AwToonnufc // Dec 18, 2012 at 9:54 AM

Would love to see this lad arrive at the toon. Him and Ben arfa would be unreal together and would give us some much needed pace in the team. Would be sad to see Marv go though as I think he could be one of our top players given a proper chance.

  • 26 Krul to be Kind // Dec 18, 2012 at 10:23 AM

    Torq

As far as I know Biglia is a very solid argentine midfielder about mid 20’s, he played in Belgium a few years ago (think he still is actually) but kind of went of the radar until he got recently capped by Argentina, one of those midfield tempo dictators I believe, solid player

  • 27 Lee Dodd // Dec 18, 2012 at 10:33 AM

Ba Needs to Come out and say He is Staying Early In The Transfer Window or Just Sod off as we dont want to be messing about and get relegated !!!!!!!

  • 28 Ketsbaia9 // Dec 18, 2012 at 10:36 AM

It’d be a bit suicidal to get rid of Marveaux. I’d let Obertan go but definitely not Marveaux. Marveaux is a class player. We need some creativity in the team. Hopefully he plays the next few games and shows why he’s worth keeping.

  • 29 Sav // Dec 18, 2012 at 12:13 PM

I hear Remy always follows the dough…( taxi!)
Would they still take Obertan even if the deal for Remy fell through?.

  • 30 GeordieDan // Dec 18, 2012 at 12:57 PM

Not sure what to make of these “new” bits of transfer new today:

If Pardew is saying 1 player only coming in then is that Remy only and no defenders? – That would surely be ridiculous to think that’s all we need

If Marv or Gabby is going as part of the deal then do we not need 2 extra players minimum (or 3 if Ba is going as well) just to tread water?

If we are only getting player and that’s a defender then what happens come January when Ameobi and Cheik are away?

Its either all smoke and daggers or just utter bull5hit.

We NEED 3 players minimum and thats not counting anyone leaving.

If that doesn’t happen then in my usually optimistic point of view Ashley is deliberately trying NOT to let NUFC progress and is happy promoting his brand with a mid-table club. Very worrying. :(

  • 31 north_country_boy // Dec 18, 2012 at 3:14 PM

    Krul
    Debuchy Douglas Coloccini Santon
    Sissoko
    Anita Cabaye
    Ben Arfa Cisse Remy

Keep them fit and watch us climb the league – and then I woke up! : )

  • 32 Jam only For H.ben Arfa // Dec 18, 2012 at 4:06 PM

I know this player, he’s very fast, and strong, a good forward…like Louis Saha, the same players

  • 33 ToonBano // Dec 18, 2012 at 7:04 PM

If Remy comes in…then Ba will be out.

He probably would have already left by the time we replace him with Remy.

….although dont be surprised if Ashley and Llmabias try to sign Remy for £7.5m as that is what Ba will have brought in to then be rejected and the deal to fall through.
