This Is How Newcastle Can Surprise Us Next Month

9:42 am, Tuesday, December 18th, 2012 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 31 Comments

One of the big mistakes Derek Llambias and the Newcastle Board made last summer was not bringing in a fourth striker after we let both Leon Best and Peter Lovenkrands leave the club. So we are left with only three experienced strikers and of course Shola Ameobi may be off to the African Cup of Nations next month and Demba Ba may be off to another club for good. 🙁

shola ameobi great shot

Shola Ameobi – could leave for African Cup of Nations

The news today that Newcastle are in advanced talks for Marseilles striker Loic Remy is not too surprising, and it could be that Newcastle will surprise the fans by bringing in three good players next month.

There are suggestions in France that a deal may already be done for Toulouse french International midfielder Moussa Sissoko, and there has to be a decent possibility that Newcastle will try one more time for Mathieu Debuchy of Lille.

And since the defense is our Achilles heel and has been for the last three seasons, we hope we can get Brazilian Douglas through the door for a reduced fee, as his five year contract ends at FC Twente in the summer, and he was a target of Newcastle’s last summer.

Newcastle could surprise us this January and we hope they do – because if we remain in a relegation fight this season, it’s not good for a number of reasons.

If we survive we will almost certainly have top players wanting to leave in the summer, and if we don’t survive it will be an even bigger disaster than in 2009, when we made the disastrous drop.

So the longer we are in a relegation scrap at the bottom of the league the worse it will be for Newcastle – there’s no doubt about that – because we will lose our reputation gained last season of being a club on the rise.

Having all his Christmas presents stolen by heartle ss thieves from Elswick is too good for Ashley.

I can see Bigila play very good sweeper role , but it’s never going to happen even if we can get Biglia.

  • 3 Transfer Sage // Dec 18, 2012 at 9:50 AM

    Ba is a gonna.

His stock has been raised with 11 goals this year so more interest will be there.

Before the last transfer window he went 16 or so games without a goal so naturally less interest.

Arsenal need a forward, wenger doesn’t spent much, perfect match.

He won’t fail a medical if wenger really wants him, he managed to get a contract with us an west ham and clubs before so that’s not an issue.

  • 4 WWYCD // Dec 18, 2012 at 9:50 AM

Remy, Sissoko, he who shall not be named and Douglas in Jan…wonderfully but am not expecting much
Also edging up the cost to the level that tubs would have a heart attack

  • 5 WWYCD // Dec 18, 2012 at 9:53 AM

    Ibiza from last thread
Its a good chance to do just that but QPR is a must win game and gambling on Cisse finally refinding his form is a huge risk, either on the wing or central he looks a different player compared to last season

  • 6 Santon03 // Dec 18, 2012 at 9:53 AM

and we only get 3.5mil 🙁

  • 7 Ian Toon // Dec 18, 2012 at 9:56 AM

Loic Remy has long been the Premier League’s favourite transfer rumour. There’s many a slip twixt the cup and the lip. I’ll wait until the signatures on the contract. Encouraging news that were making the running for early January signings. Priority remains defensive replacements. I f I was Ashley I would give Ba a new contract matching Coloccini’s . Current word from media sources occur frequently when contract negotiations are at the delicate stage there at. We should look to keep our best players particularly goalscorers.
Rotonda– I agree with your assessment of Simpson. However playing as a sweeper he would continually play the opposition onside as he just hasn’t got a football brain to speak of.

  • 8 Jail for Ashley // Dec 18, 2012 at 9:56 AM

I wouldn’t get to excited about Remy because Demba Ba could be leaving,I remember after being linked with DeJong then Best getting sold I thought the deal was done, after all which club would let two strikers go and then leave yourself short without getting a replacement……….

  • 9 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Dec 18, 2012 at 9:57 AM

Yo….I hear you. Ba off the bench to prove his value though if needed? Even if he’s playing for a move, thats fine by me, might go the other way though.

    P.S. Debuchy 😉

  • 10 Rotonda heights // Dec 18, 2012 at 9:57 AM

I’m really torn now. On the one hand I can’t argue at all with what Ba is saying as that’s 100% how I’ve felt all season.

On the other hand did we ditch good football to accommodate Ba centrally? But why? We could still have played Benny and Marveaux either side of a central Ba and had Cisse on the bench a la Hernandez at Manu.

It’s all a bit chicken and egg. If we bring in Remy will he play left in a 433 as also will pardew stick with his beloved 442 defensive hoofball?

Do I trust pardew to change or was he looking to move towards this more attractive football with the likes of Anita? Ibiza over to you….!

  • 11 89Norcal // Dec 18, 2012 at 9:58 AM

That’s what I’m banking on with Cisse. He’s edgy and nervous those very few times he has the ball in the penalty area and chops the ball. He’s definitely one who thrives alone up front.

  • 12 Graeme // Dec 18, 2012 at 9:58 AM

Wow, Ed, that is some amazing signings being indicated, if remotely true!!

Adding Loic Remy, Sissoko, Douglas AND Debuchy, all in one transfer window would be a spectacular set of signings and if only Ba is out, then we will have dramatically improved the skill and ability of the team.

All we have to do now – is wait and see if reality is as kind as it could be!!! This is Mashley & Muppet after all.

  • 13 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Dec 18, 2012 at 9:58 AM

    Jail…No one would do that……ahhh, I get what you’re saying….

  • 14 Ian Toon // Dec 18, 2012 at 9:58 AM

Transfer- Theo Walcott playing the Obertan way!!!

  • 15 WWYCD // Dec 18, 2012 at 10:01 AM

True he might prove his worth from the bench or he might refuse to come on haha

Don’t say his name! Its cursed! Now we have another window filled with Cabayes unhappiness and apparent done deals…fun fun fun

  • 16 Rotonda heights // Dec 18, 2012 at 10:02 AM

I do like to press the opposition barcelona style, but to be honest though, I prefer seeing a sweeper than a really slow back 4 trying to play offside. Only takes a bad individual or linesman’s error.

  • 17 Ian Toon // Dec 18, 2012 at 10:02 AM

Transfer- Ba part exchange for Walcott. I mentioned a month ago that
I could see us involved in part exchange deals. I too would like to keep Marvaeux. The prospect of additional French flair is mouthwatering. I have to go have a good day.

  • 18 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Dec 18, 2012 at 10:02 AM

Rotonda…Thank you for the introduction….actually, I am going to ease up a bit (but only a little), I believe the club will do the right thing, but I wont build up your expectations this time round, it’s not reasonable. Time for the board to do the talking or in this case, putting the talking in to action.

But I do think with the right personnel, Pardew will evolve with his set up….but defense is a fair part of his current restriction, Ba for Remy isn’t the only missing piece imo.

  • 19 check the toastie // Dec 18, 2012 at 10:02 AM

Going by the Douglas Debuchy transfer saga’s it will be a long time before Remy shows up.

Every transfer window is like groundhog day on here. Remy wont come its bullshit. The only good news is that ba is leaving which makes the club buy somebody who may allow Cisse to play through the middle.

And Shola is leaving for African Nations, that is the first time the ACON has been of benefit to a PL team.

Hope we get Sissoko in to replace Tiote, highly likely it will be left to Perchinho mind you, who by the way was excellent again on Saturday, love the lad.

  • 20 jimiley // Dec 18, 2012 at 10:05 AM

Ba wants 80k a week which is the going rate for a striker who can score 25 plus goals. Ashers will not pay the going rate and the lad is gone. It is all very well having a wage structure but if we want to aspire to be a BIG club, we have to pay when it is necessary. But we are not a big club and we should get used to the idea. We are there with the Swanseas and Stokes of this world. We have two other quality players… HBA and Cabaye. Anybody think they will be around in a year or two?
PS We have already lost the reputation of a club on the rise. We are a club of cheapscates.

  • 21 Conaldo (The Wizard...Also Bestest Friends With Paul Scharner) // Dec 18, 2012 at 10:05 AM

If these things ba are saying are true, I’m getting annoyed with him now. No player Is bigger than the club. The funny thing is, if he leaves, he will be replaced by someone just as good if not better, and when we upgrade te weak links in our team, we will play mutch better football.

Arsenal are a club in decline. They won’t finish top 4 this year.

  • 22 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Dec 18, 2012 at 10:06 AM

Check…Whilst we have had to wait a long time for certain players, others did seemingly turn up over night, we’ll see how serious the club are this time around, it was foolish to dance with improvement, surely it’s suicide to dance with relegation?!?

Yo…I’m hoping Cabaye returns from injury with a big smile on his face, along with the rest of us…here’s to hoping!

  • 23 Santon03 // Dec 18, 2012 at 10:07 AM

Finally someone who agree with sweeper role 🙂

  • 24 rainrix // Dec 18, 2012 at 10:07 AM

Remy would certainly soften the blow if ba left, but in all honesty i don’t see why remy would come when we’re languishing were we are.

Then again i was dumbfounded when we managed to get HBA so you never know 🙂 Although its plain to see we need more defenders at the same time, god i hope januarys a good month

  • 25 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Dec 18, 2012 at 10:08 AM

Conaldo…Not so sure on Arsenal finishing outside the top 4. They’ve had one of their most dreadful starts ever and yet are 5th! Wenger may be stubborn and need to address certain aspects of his approach, but I believe he will get them where he normally does – They’re far from over imo.

  • 26 TorqToon // Dec 18, 2012 at 10:10 AM

Rainrix – Luckily the vibe in France is we’ve been distinctly unlucky with bad decisions and hampered by injuries. Our stock is, I believe, at its peak in France ! More so than last year for some strange reason! We are very highly regarded. I can assure you of that.

  • 27 Jail for Ashley // Dec 18, 2012 at 10:12 AM

    Ian Toon ,
Walcott has turned down a five year deal with 75K a week, what’s the point in even speculating.
In hindsight this season was always going to be a write off,had we been in a top eight position not far off top six and relatively injury free, come January we would have heard the usual nonsense about the quality we have in the building and how difficult it is to get players over the line in January our real targets in the summer yatter yatter ,Taylor would have imploded the usual injuries and suspensions would have mounted and the shattered morale due to lack of ambition would have set in,so basically our season would have crumbled later rather than sooner.

  • 28 andym // Dec 18, 2012 at 10:16 AM

Andym – Can see Ince going to Liverfool mate unfortunately ! He is a superb talent!

  • 30 toonarmydownsouth // Dec 18, 2012 at 10:27 AM

Dont reckon ince will go back to liverpool he slated them when he signed for blackpool from them

  • 31 andym // Dec 18, 2012 at 1:35 PM

Yeah totally agree mate wishfull thinking haha. Hes a free also i think? Disanto at wigan would be a decent free transfer in summer (i think hes on a free) young argentine international should be easily swayed to cum here. Fatty can really make amends in january with say 5 signings that will really challenge first team (remy/debuchy/douglas/diame/ sisoko) even if we were to lose ba/simpson and tiote personally i would see it as really positive step that would also maybe leave a few £million profit in it for him…
