One of the big mistakes Derek Llambias and the Newcastle Board made last summer was not bringing in a fourth striker after we let both Leon Best and Peter Lovenkrands leave the club. So we are left with only three experienced strikers and of course Shola Ameobi may be off to the African Cup of Nations next month and Demba Ba may be off to another club for good.
Shola Ameobi - could leave for African Cup of Nations
The news today that Newcastle are in advanced talks for Marseilles striker Loic Remy is not too surprising, and it could be that Newcastle will surprise the fans by bringing in three good players next month.
There are suggestions in France that a deal may already be done for Toulouse french International midfielder Moussa Sissoko, and there has to be a decent possibility that Newcastle will try one more time for Mathieu Debuchy of Lille.
And since the defense is our Achilles heel and has been for the last three seasons, we hope we can get Brazilian Douglas through the door for a reduced fee, as his five year contract ends at FC Twente in the summer, and he was a target of Newcastle’s last summer.
Newcastle could surprise us this January and we hope they do – because if we remain in a relegation fight this season, it’s not good for a number of reasons.
If we survive we will almost certainly have top players wanting to leave in the summer, and if we don’t survive it will be an even bigger disaster than in 2009, when we made the disastrous drop.
So the longer we are in a relegation scrap at the bottom of the league the worse it will be for Newcastle – there’s no doubt about that – because we will lose our reputation gained last season of being a club on the rise.
