Newcastle Unchanged For QPR Test

2:03 pm, Saturday, December 22nd, 2012 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 275 Comments

qpr

Newcastle are unchanged from last week when we lost to Manchester City for the important game against QPR this afternoon.

Gabriel Obertan returns to the bench after recovering from his toe injury, and both Ameobi brother and veteran goalkeeper Steve Harper are on the bench today.

Shane Ferguson, Gale Bigirimana and Sylvain Marveaux make up the substitutes for Newcastle.

This is an important game and we can get the Christmas season going on the right note with a win this afternoon, which will be only the second win in the last 12 games if we can do it.

Howay the Lads!!

Teams:

Newcastle United (4-3-3): Tim Krul; Danny Simpson, Mike Williamson, Fabricio Coloccini (c), Davide Santon; James Perch, Cheick Tiote, Vurnon Anita; Papiss Cisse, Demba Ba, Jonas Gutierrez
Substitutes: Steve Harper, Shane Ferguson, Gael Bigirimana, Sylvain Marveaux, Gabriel Obertan, Sammy Ameobi, Shola Ameobi

QPR (4-3-3): Robert Green; Fabio da Silva, Anton Ferdinand, Ryan Nelsen, Clint Hill; Esteban Granero, Stephane Mbia, Alejandro Faurlin; Jamie Mackie, Djibril Cisse, Adel Taarabt
Substitutes: Brian Murphy, Armand Traore, Samba Diakite, Shaun Derry, Nedum Onuoha, Junior Hoilett, Shaun Wright-Phillips

I reckon we will win comfortably, i hope we win comfortbly, i got a feeling colo’s going to score

  • 4 santonthenewmaldini // Dec 22, 2012 at 2:08 PM

Jonas and Cisse on the wing???

A poacher on one wing and a guy who cant do anything on the other

    No wonder we are struggling!!!

Cisse and Ba could actually work as a partnership if we had 2 fullbacks and 2 wingers who can cross and get the ball in the box but i dont see how this is going to work today

What has Marveux got to do to get a shot???

  • 5 drewcessford // Dec 22, 2012 at 2:09 PM

Have to either play Ba on the left or drop him… Would rather drop him over Cisse since it looks like he’s leaving anyways, Cisse must play through the middle.

Jonas is in last chance saloon

another ridiculous line up. Hope pardew gets the sack after today’s inevitable defeat. Wish we had Harry Redknapp in charge

  • 9 manxpie // Dec 22, 2012 at 2:13 PM

well i think marveux buggerd up his chance in the bordeux game he just wasn’t interested if he’d performed better in that game i think we’d be seeing more of him now.
we played well with this team last week against the champions so we’ll get the win today i think 433 the way to go

  • 10 Ketsbaia9 // Dec 22, 2012 at 2:13 PM

Marveaux is definitely leaving in January. I hope we struggle today. Gutierrez does not deserve to start. Lets hope that Marveaux gets on before Obertan.

Every 1 is supporting the team. that is 1 thing abt which you need not worry.

  • 22 santonthenewmaldini // Dec 22, 2012 at 2:21 PM

Yeah i think Marveux blew his chance against Bordeux as well although it was not his fault as he was put on the wing and e played the long ball the whole night which meant he could not get involved

Never like to wish injury on players but that would look like the only way Jonas will get dropped thing is Jonas probably could do a good job at right back or right wing as he is right footed but we always play him on the left which means he has to cut inside and always loses the ball would be better if he could just whip the ball in with his right

Also watching Arsenal Wigan game the gunners are not all that good like if we play the right formation and actually attack them there defense is there for the taking

  • 23 spitfire_ // Dec 22, 2012 at 2:21 PM

    kevymartins

When Pardew can’t drop Jonas for his poor poor play only the injuries remains.

  • 24 Spreadthetoon // Dec 22, 2012 at 2:22 PM

    Highly original….bet ‘arry didn’t expect that? …LOL

Hope Jonas has a good game – if he’s no longer carrying an injury then I am expecting form of last season. Also btw if he was carrying a slight injury then why did AP not play Marv….guess he does not rate him? Personally I’d like to see Obertan and Marv play upfront with Cisse in the middle. Unlikely….so I hope and pray we get the result we desperately need…..HWTL

  • 25 JAMSHA // Dec 22, 2012 at 2:22 PM

FOK U PARDEW HOW THE FOK CAN U LEAVE MARVO ON THE BENCH WE HE CLEARLY HAS BEEN MUCH BETTER THAN GUTI IN LAST FEW MATCHES…… GIVE THE LAD ATLEAST A CHANCE …….

  • 26 Peter // Dec 22, 2012 at 2:23 PM

I really do questions if most people are Newcastle supporters in this blog with recent comments over a team selection seriously just support the team man! If not bugger off and support Barcelona

Some of you lads really need to give your collective heads a shake. A ball hasn’t even been kicked, we have what’s ultimately our strongest side starting and you’re already stropping.

    Disgraceful.

  • 35 Nufc-83 // Dec 22, 2012 at 2:29 PM

Think most people on here are at the same conclusion that pardew is a clown. Jonas will be awful as usual and cisse and ba won’t pass to each other. Oh well lets hope and pray they all have a stormer as we are desperate for a win.

finally the right formation, but the wrong players!!!

How the hell can marveaux not get a game at home instead of jonas against a bottom 2 team? And why not obertan instead of cisse on the wing. Round pegs square holes is right.

  • 39 Newcastle for alltid // Dec 22, 2012 at 2:32 PM

While we didn’t play too bad against City, I still can’t believe we play Jonas instead of Marveaux. Jonas is completely out of confidence, and seems to only run around collecting free kicks. Another issue is playing Cissè on the wing. He is a center forward who is meant to finish attacks. He’s completely missused on the wing because of poor passing abilities, and lack of trickery and pace.

  • 40 Thump // Dec 22, 2012 at 2:32 PM

@toon1707: tbh I don’t think many people do. Marv had one good game for us and has been virtually anonymous in almost everything else he’s done which is a damn shame because he does have a lot of ability, he just doesn’t seem to use it.

  • 41 hotdog // Dec 22, 2012 at 2:33 PM

Hope we get stuck right in from the start and close them down

As if we give them any encouragement it could be bad as we should not be frightened of QPR no disrespect but we should be blowing teams like this away with ease its being negative against teams that has cost us

Also Wigan have been passing Arsenal off the park this 2nd half like they done against us but have not had a shot on target

    Spot on mate its pathetic

    Indian
Theres critising but then theres saying we’ve already lost against a team who havent won away in a year ffs!
Let me ask you a question, and i’ll hold you to your answer, in fact let me ask everyone b1tching and whinging that marvs not in the team,
If the team put in a proper performance today, not just a win but a proper display, would you hold your hands up and say fair play pardew you got it spot on today or will you just say it was a lucky result due to blah blah blah

  • 48 Thump // Dec 22, 2012 at 2:35 PM

@wreker: I’d like to see Marv come good like he did earlier, but he’s obviously not doing enough to make an impact on the team. He prefers slower play (he would have been excellent against City, for example) and he’s not the most physical of players.

  • 49 BelfastMagpie // Dec 22, 2012 at 2:36 PM

    Thump

We’ve lost 7 out of the last 8 and only won 1 in 13 games. the definition of stupidity is to keep doing the same thing and hope for a different outcome.

Some of us are getting a bit of sick of a very negative, defensive, over cautious and tactically incompetent manager. With Benny out, Marv is our ONLY creative player and how can he ever get any form without a run of games when Jonas stinks every match?

  • 56 Ketsbaia9 // Dec 22, 2012 at 2:39 PM

Marveaux stood out against Wigan did well against Man City. I think Pardew wants to get sacked and go away on holiday somewhere. He’s deliberately trying to wind the fans up by playing Gutierrez instead of Marveaux. I also thinks it’s a joke how he is threatening Cisse to be replaced be Shola. I could understand it if Remy or Ba was on the bench.

I can’t see us getting more than a point today. They gave us a tough game last year. They are much stronger and will shoot up the league.

  • 57 micktoon // Dec 22, 2012 at 2:39 PM

tbh jonas is a quality player and a threat to any defence on his day but for some reason isnt in form is that his fault though? as he is being asked to do a job that restricts him also off the ball he works his socks off and gives a 100% what more can he do, and isnt that all we ask for when you take to the pitch you give it all, so heres hoping he finds his form and gets a goal today COME ON JONAS SON hwtl

Good point, however I feel he should at least be given a chance in the starting lineup, probably ahead of guti as he can surely not keep his place after such a long string of sub standard performances.

    @Toon Army Down South

I would say well done to the lads never subscribed to this Pardew can do no right brigade although when was the last time you watched a Toon game and said well done to the team and Pardew’s tactics?

The last game i remember loving it was Bordeaux at Home and the Spurs game both were ages ago !!

The comeback against Everton was pretty good although if the ref had done his job we would have not got a look in

Always seems to pick the wrong team and makes a change when we are down and then we start to play well but by then we are out the game

I just want to see a winning team for a bit sexy football can come in the 2nd half of the season with the new signings….

Would credit be given then? Or would it be another lucky season?

Aye, this formation and the personnel in it, just highlight the lack of creativity and ability to slice through them. If you’re gonna focus all your attacks down either wing, have players who are comfortable getting to the byline and whipping quality deliveries in, not to mention get more bodies in the box.

We’ve set-up in such a way that we make it difficult for ourselves from the off, just to make a clear-cut chance is a struggle.

  • 117 Joe Blog // Dec 22, 2012 at 3:41 PM

Team is so predictable. Same trademark moves from all our players, repeated over and over without success.

Ba cutting in and shooting, blocked, generally being a greedy git.
Jonas and his jinking but without the burst of yesteryear, coupled with his lame crossing.
Santon looking promising then fizzling out.
    Cisse the invisible.
Simpson and his awful, awful crosses.

  • 118 Marty-Toon // Dec 22, 2012 at 3:41 PM

    That there is useless

  • 119 Willo // Dec 22, 2012 at 3:41 PM

Two lovely free kicks Mr. Ba.

  • 120 Oleg G // Dec 22, 2012 at 3:42 PM

Ba – looking only to score. AKA looking for his next contract. :(

  • 121 messi_is_king // Dec 22, 2012 at 3:42 PM

Yes Cisse does need to be up top to play to his best of course. But so does Ba who has been scoring and 442 doesn’t work, makes us a worse team

Like I say if rumours or true Ba will leave in Jan and the centre forward role will be all Cisse’s

  • 122 Joe Blog // Dec 22, 2012 at 3:43 PM

And that sums up our attacking ‘prowess’.

Get Marveaux on for something different. At least he can drift past a couple of players and provide some threat through the centre. Will see better from Anita with his introduction too, I think.

  • 123 santonthenewmaldini // Dec 22, 2012 at 3:45 PM

    QPR are terrible

We have been camped in their half for the whole time

Jonas and Santon’s Final ball is terrible we are crying out for Marveux or Ferguson’s delivery as if we get a goal i think QPR will crumble

It is good that we are keeping it on the deck though if we had played like this when we had Arfa and Cabaye in the team we would not be at the bottom of the league

  • 124 LGFUAD21 // Dec 22, 2012 at 3:45 PM

Don’t know how Ba scores so much, he falls over a lot and is greedy.

Pards says we need to be more bold. So plays perch in place of benny.

We look alright but we are waning a bit.

I kinda hope Ba leaves, so we can get a different type of striker in. Confident cisse would score given main striker role. Wonder why we won’t go back in for Kevin Gameiro. Just as fast as remy but with a slightly better finish IMO, and just as skilful.

  • 125 Joe Blog // Dec 22, 2012 at 3:47 PM

    As commentators said,

    first half with no highlights

  • 132 karasu // Dec 22, 2012 at 3:52 PM

3 groups of people needs to be shot:

    - The refs for giving so many decisions to QPR

    - Anybody named Ryan Nelsen on the pitch for blocking away all our shots and passes

    - Any Magpie who tried to cross or shoot for so poor at doing either of those

  • 133 keeganjr // Dec 22, 2012 at 3:52 PM

Put cisse up front, and get marv ON the wing… I like Santon and anita

  • 134 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Dec 22, 2012 at 3:52 PM

Well, what a boring game so far. Promising signs though in that QPR are even more useless. Get some creativity off the bench and we should get some goals. They can’t contain us, we just need to be better in the final 3rd.

Need a kick up the backside half time, game is there to be won.

  • 135 Spreadthetoon // Dec 22, 2012 at 3:52 PM

Well we have not created any clear cut opportunities against the worst side in the league….and what’s more our defense look woeful when up against the counter-attack.
Anita is probably again the best player on the pitch so far IMO. Tiote’s been good in midfield but should opt to pass than shoot himself…LOL! Evidently IMO we definitely need to sign a CAM and Sissoko would be perfect but I am dreaming on that account. Jonas has been OK but has no legs…..seriously would very very strongly put Marveaux on at half time. We have got to win this FFS!

  • 136 Beattie25 // Dec 22, 2012 at 3:53 PM

In other games we have played this poorly Pards has hoyed off a youngster at half time.

Will he have the balls to do the same to an adult?

  • 137 Magpies-till-d3ath // Dec 22, 2012 at 3:53 PM

    Sunderland going above us! Embarrassing!

  • 138 hotdog // Dec 22, 2012 at 3:53 PM

Santon – QPR are letting us camp in their half. You will see a different QPR at some point in the second half i would think. Without Hatem we have very little creativity. I think QPR will be happy to let us have the ball wide as they know they can deal with the ball in as only Ba is in there. Still some good possession and at the mo are looking the more likely to win. Come on boys

  • 139 BelfastMagpie // Dec 22, 2012 at 3:53 PM

Our corners are amazing though lol

  • 140 santonthenewmaldini // Dec 22, 2012 at 3:54 PM

The fact that we are keeping the ball on the deck more these days maybe the 442 could work all we need is to bring on a direct winger who can cross the ball??

Hope Pardew makes a change as QPR are dire we need more creativity Nelsen is playing awesome but Ferdinand and Fabio are terrible

Good to see Simmo get forward just a shame he cant cross

  • 141 Sinner // Dec 22, 2012 at 3:55 PM

  • 142 jimiley // Dec 22, 2012 at 3:55 PM

  • 160 Spreadthetoon // Dec 22, 2012 at 4:01 PM

    Jimiley
“were so dominant” and yet we’ve had only 1 shot on target. We’ve been bereft of creativity in the final 3rd…..so it don’t matter how dominant we are if we cannot create the opportunities…surely you can see that? Hope your right with 1-0….don’t care what the scoreline is tbh just as long as we get this win.
Put Cisse in the middle, bring on Obertan and Marv then we’ll have a lot more promise in the final 3rd IMO.

  • 161 Dannyo // Dec 22, 2012 at 4:02 PM

  • 237 Santon03 // Dec 22, 2012 at 4:42 PM

OMG only Ba didn’t celebrate Shola’s goal. From the replay, he made a gesture why Shola didn’t pass the ball to him?

  • 238 Joe Blog // Dec 22, 2012 at 4:42 PM

Would you look at that. A little bit of composure and willingness to draw a couple of players, then knowing when to release the ball, grants our first clear sight of goal, then Shola tucks it away with aplomb.

Well done Marv, well done Shola.

  • 239 toonarmydownsouth // Dec 22, 2012 at 4:43 PM

Remember when ba was subbed off and was proper p1ssed about it? Everyone saying he was a toss3r etc and we should get rid if he’s not prepared to be a team player? Does the same now apply for cisse?

  • 240 nufc786 // Dec 22, 2012 at 4:43 PM

    marv why not obertan???????????????

  • 241 toonicle // Dec 22, 2012 at 4:43 PM

Obertan, Marv and Shola have totally changed this game. Such a relief.

  • 242 NUFCarter // Dec 22, 2012 at 4:44 PM

350th appearance and he’s marked it with a goal. Shola ameobi what a legend!

  • 243 DarloGeordie // Dec 22, 2012 at 4:44 PM

    Stuffs made of dreams…

    I love you Shola!!!!!

  • 244 mattyNUFC // Dec 22, 2012 at 4:44 PM

    this is sylvan!

if ba takes this i’ll be livid!

  • 245 colwell // Dec 22, 2012 at 4:44 PM

    Marv has got this

  • 246 jimiley // Dec 22, 2012 at 4:45 PM

Ba is on his way so we can slag him off. Cisse is staying so we will just ignore the petulance as we need him.

  • 247 mattyNUFC // Dec 22, 2012 at 4:45 PM

    so close!

  • 248 Big Pappa Cissé // Dec 22, 2012 at 4:46 PM

Marv has done more in 10 minutes than Jonas has done all season

  • 249 NUFCarter // Dec 22, 2012 at 4:46 PM

    Lovely curling effort marveaux

  • 250 santonthenewmaldini // Dec 22, 2012 at 4:47 PM

If only Pardew would reward Obertan and Marv with a regular shot

    Jonas needs benched

  • 251 NUFCarter // Dec 22, 2012 at 4:47 PM

    And a substitute scored ha.

  • 252 mattyNUFC // Dec 22, 2012 at 4:49 PM

crazy thing about ba is we still seem to be appeasing him, even though he’s off indefinitely in a few weeks.

why shoot cisse’s confidence further back? bench ba for all i care. cisse has proven he will score if we play to his strengths. he’s not a winger and he’s not a hold-up striker. he scores, that’s all he does. play him so he can score

  • 253 santonthenewmaldini // Dec 22, 2012 at 4:52 PM

Cisse looked raging when he came off

No wonder though played on the wing and then taken off

Shola has played well since he came on but he should not be a starter he is better coming off the bench

if we play like this against Man Utd we could get beat 5 or 6 nil

  • 254 Rake // Dec 22, 2012 at 4:53 PM

    @Matty

It does seem counter productive… but in training Cisse must be missing the net aswell as in games… then im sure some would say but he’s not in his correct position… The plot thickens…

  • 255 fray bentos // Dec 22, 2012 at 4:55 PM

haha to all you plebs complaining about Shola coming on

  • 256 NUFCarter // Dec 22, 2012 at 4:55 PM

We have played well. We were all over them but we got finish these chances let alone create them. Nervy drop by krul. My stomach dropped. Bring on united!

  • 257 mattyNUFC // Dec 22, 2012 at 4:56 PM

    rake

never have and never will understand pards and the things he does

just me but he confuses me to no end on a week to week basis

  • 258 Williamsonsuks // Dec 22, 2012 at 4:57 PM

Yeeessss! Pretty ugly but who gives a f**k. Anita n ameobi for me.

  • 259 hotdog // Dec 22, 2012 at 4:57 PM

thank fook for that, Cant see floppy chops saving that team. I

  • 260 Magpies-till-d3ath // Dec 22, 2012 at 4:58 PM

    Marveaux is CLASS!!!!

  • 261 ~Anita One Bites the Dust~ // Dec 22, 2012 at 4:58 PM

Said this about 5-6 games into the season, Ameobi and Ba > Ba and Cisse. They worked well together, especially against United Last Season.

Good substitutions today by Pardew, was skeptical on Obertan coming on with Marv on the bench but he did pretty good. Marv unlucky with the Free kick.

    Anita MoM for me.

  • 262 Tommyy // Dec 22, 2012 at 4:59 PM

I hope we don’t get too carried away with this, After all it is QPR and sounds like we were still really struggling to create.
    Still need to improve dramatically.

  • 263 hotdog // Dec 22, 2012 at 5:00 PM

only 5 points off 8th place. u see what 3 points does for the optimism :-)

  • 264 Spreadthetoon // Dec 22, 2012 at 5:00 PM

Cisse should have stayed on the field….Shola MOTM cos’ that was great control and without that cannot see us scoring today.
Marv n Obertan should be starting from the off in my opinion. Anita and Santon great game by both. Still not sold of AP but today’s result has definitely bought him a little time……better make sure we have a better transfer window than last. Anyway above scum and a little better off in the table, I’ll be able to breathe a little easier.

  • 265 Benji84 // Dec 22, 2012 at 5:00 PM

happy we got the result it was a shit game
Still dont understand why pards chose obertan to Marvs. When marvs had the ball he looked dangerous and threatening. Shoal I think we all love and hate you when dont you do this type of effort every week. I still think Cisses should of stayed not Ba whats your thoughts

  • 266 Tinman // Dec 22, 2012 at 5:01 PM

Based on that performance team I would play this team against Manure:

    Krul
    Simp, Willo, Collo, Santon
    Obertan, Perch, Anita, Marv,
    Cisse, Ameobi

Ba was shit, he is obviously gone so stop playing him. Give our players who will be staying some game time and confidence and support (Ameobi and Cisse)

  • 267 kukubean // Dec 22, 2012 at 5:02 PM

BA is becoming selfish, its pissing me off…..this performance based contract is BAD…. he is taking all the chance to score…thats about it…its SAD…. its time we focus on real no.9…

  • 268 Baro // Dec 22, 2012 at 5:02 PM

    SHOLA AMEOBI!!!!!

    The king!!!!

  • 269 Spuggy // Dec 22, 2012 at 5:02 PM

Perfect day – bottom four loose wigan, reading, QPR and S’hampton and we pull 5 points clear of relegation – thank **** for that!!!

We have some hard teams which we’d probably have lost against anyway, then Cabaye, HBA and Saylor return for some easier fixtures and hopefully some January reinforcements – if we can add a couple of quality players we’ll be ok I think but what a woeful season so far.

  • 270 Benji84 // Dec 22, 2012 at 5:02 PM

I hope marv is not allowed to go in the jan window it be a big loss. But saying that he not a loss if pards does not play him for 90 mins

  • 271 Ketsbaia9 // Dec 22, 2012 at 5:02 PM

Marveaux changed the game. No doubt he’ll be on the bench against Man Utd. Santon was incredible again.

  • 272 Rake // Dec 22, 2012 at 5:05 PM

Kets you are a strange specimen

  • 273 ~Anita One Bites the Dust~ // Dec 22, 2012 at 5:05 PM

    Are you a fool Kets?

Ameobi and Obertan changed the game. Marv played well but its not like he made a drastic change. Game was piss poor and I was falling asleep till Ameobi and Obertan came on.

  • 274 manxpie // Dec 22, 2012 at 5:07 PM

so pardews subs change the game completely but i’m not betting on any praise for him at all!
and again people saying marv should start coz he played well when he came on, it was a perfect time in the game for him and ober to come into it was always gonna be a cagey game the pressure on that team today was immense!
great goal by shola where’s catchy btw!

  • 275 Spreadthetoon // Dec 22, 2012 at 5:09 PM

Marv played well and should start end off…..he should not be sold/ swapped either. Gabbs did well…Jonas did not have a bad game but his legs are clearly gone….shame but his only future for the club is as a DM not a wing…….end of.
