We thought we may have a good chance of getting something out of the game at the Emirates on Saturday, but now Mike Williamson will be absent, and will be joining Jonas Gutierrez on the sidelines, and of course Vurnon Anita will also very likely be absent in London, after picking up an ankle injury near the end of the game at Old Trafford, when he had to be stretchered off the field.
Mike Williamson – misses the Arsenal game after picking up his 5th yellow card
This is what Alan Pardew said today about Anita’s injury and how it came about:
“I was upset with that tackle.” “I thought it got lost a little bit in the excitement of the finish. I don’t think Valencia has tried to hurt the player, he just timed it badly.”
“It is too early to say how long he will be out for, but it’s a bang on the ankle and we’ll have to wait and see whether he’ll make Arsenal.” “He would be a loss to us because I thought he was terrific.”
“You could argue our whole midfield from last year was out – we had no Gutierrez, Tiote, Yohan Cabaye or Hatem Ben Arfa. Our midfield did well though, brilliantly well.”
The Argentine winger Jonas Gutierrez will have an injection in his knee today, and is said to be missing for the next two or three games, but it looks like we’ll go into the game at Arsenal with another patched up side – and it may be hard to come away with anything now from our London trip.
But we suppose the good news is that Cheick Tiote will return to the midfield, after serving his one match ban for picking up his 5th yellow card against QPR.
There seems to have been so many of our experienced players missing this season for one reason or the other – through injury or suspension – and of course it’s taking its toll on the side, with Newcastle now just 5 points above the relegation zone and on a terrible run of results.
