Good news today being reported by Sky Sports News, that Lille and Newcastle have finally agreed a fee in the region of £5M for Mathieu Debuchy, and that’s around £1.5M less than Lille were demanding in the summer.
Mathieu Debuchy – on his way to Newcastle
And it looks like the deal can be done early this coming week, so we are expecting Mathieu Debuchy to come through the door maybe even on New Years Day, and he will be the first signing by Newcastle in the January transfer window, and he’ll be a welcome defensive reinforcement for the side.
Of course the 27 year-old has been a target of Newcastle’s all this year, and the club came very close to signing him in the summer, and in retrospect it would have been better to have signed him in August – but hey – better late than never.
And Yohan Cabaye, who Alan Pardew said will be able to return from his groin injury in mid January, will be pleased that his best pal is joining the club – and of course Mathieu is a good player and an excellent professional, and hopefully will help to strengthen a defense that has been the Achilles heel of the club too many times this season.
And that would seemingly leave the door open for Newcastle to sell Danny Simpson in January, if they can get a buyer willing to pay around £2M for the former Manchester United defender.
This is good news, but we also need a center-back to arrive in January, and we can go about making our defense much more resilient than it’s been of late, and of course Steven taylor is alos due back form his hamstring injury in a couple of weeks time.
Mathieu has played for Lille since 2004 and he’s played over 300 times for the French club with 17 goals.
This is good news.
