Newcastle went after Modibo Maiga in the summer of 2011, but couldn’t get him to St. James Park that summer, as last day efforts to sign the 25 year-old striker fell short.
Modibo Maiga - Newcastle interested again in this striker?
And in the following December, Newcastle lined up an agreement for him from his French club Sochaux for around £7M, but then surprisingly he failed a medical on December 13th (unlucky for some), and that was it, and the Magpies brough in Papiss Cisse in January of last year to solve our striker problem.
But now with Demba Ba likely to leave in January, Newcastle are looking to see which strikers may be available, and there’s a report in the Daily Mail today that they are interested in Maiga, who was signed by West Ham last summer, and we think the fee was a lot less than £7M.
This season he’s appeared 16 times for the Hammers in all competitions and scored four goals, although he doesn’t start for the Hammers, and he was a substitute for West Ham in their 2-1 home win against Norwich yesterday, so we wonder just how good this guy is.
And if he failed a medical just over a year ago, how would he pass a medical if Newcastle can agree terms with West Ham for the striker?
This would appear to be a strange move for Newcastle to make, and we wonder if it’s just another made up story.
