Newcastle vs Everton – Match Preview

11:03 am, Wednesday, January 2nd, 2013 by Ed Harrison · 62 Comments

everton-fc_crest

Newcastle play Everton tonight at St. James’ Park, and since we cannot seem to win away from home this season, we had better start winning our games at home, although Everton will be a tough team to beat tonight.

But Newcastle will have a stronger side out tonight than we did on Saturday at Arsenal, and Vurnon Anita has recovered from his severely bruised ankle, and Mike Williamson will be back after serving his one match ban for picking up five yellow cards on the season – and he missed the Arsenal game.

Danny Simpson has a broken toe which could see him out for up top four weeks, and we think James Perch will likely start tonight at right back in his place tonight.

And talking about right backs, there are reports that Mathieu Debuchy will be at the game tonight, so it will be interesting to see if he is in the stands  - which will probably point to his signing on at Newcastle in the next couple of days, which will be great news.

Everton are having a great season and are currently in 6th place with 33 points after going down 2-1 at home to Chelsea in their game on Sunday.

Newcastle will have one day rest more than the Toffees for this game so we hope our players don’t run out of stream again late in the game, as happened on Saturday at the Emirates, and a disastrous collapse from 3-3 to a heavy 7-3 defeat, with four goals conceded in the final 17 minutes of that game. :(

Earlier this season Newcastle were taken to the cleaners in the first half at Goodison Park, and we were behind 2-0 at the half, and it could have been worse, but then a great comeback with two goals from Demba Ba got Newcastle a well deserved draw that night.

With Vurnon Anita and Mike Williamson available this is the side that could start the game tonight

Krul
Perch Coloccini (c) Williamson Santon
Marveaux Anita Tiote
Cisse Ba Obertan
Subs: Harper Tavernier Bigirimana Ferguson Abeid Ameobi (Sh) Ameobi (Sa)

Key players for Newcastle will be Anita, Obertan and Marveaux, who have all been in good form recently, and of course we are hoping Demba Ba can get among the goals for Newcastle, even though this could well be his last game in Newcastle colors, as the media circus has already started for the January transfer window – and 33 teams are said to be interested in signing him.

And we’re a little tired of seeing our lads tire out in the last 20 minutes of recent games, so we hope they’ve had some good nights sleep this week, and are ready to go all out for the full game – because that’s what it will take to beat Everton tonight.

There may even be some good news for Newcastle for tonight’s game, in that both Leighton Baines and Steven Pienaar are sais to be doubtful for this game, but the great Marouane Fellaini is back for the Toffees after serving his ban, and he could well be the danger man tonight.

Things are getting a little worrying at the moment with Newcastle’s precarious league position, so we want to see an all out committed performance tonight, and we’d be disappointed if we cannot get all 3 points tonight, although we know that will not be easy.

As much as I hate to admit it, this is a match where Jonas on the right hand side would come in very handy. Their midfield is weak, they have both Neville and Gibson missing, and Fellaini is hardly the best on the floor. We can certainly out-pass them in the middle, especially if Anita and Marv keep their form. I agree, Cisse shouldn’t play on the right, so put Obertan on the right – his pace will deter Baines from venturing forward. Everton, under Moyes, work extremely hard, so we need to exploit this by keeping possession. Tiote and Willo need to be on top form today.

  • 2 Jayden // Jan 2, 2013 at 11:09 AM

Although if Baines and Pienaar are out, then we really need to exploit their left-hand side. If only wor Hatem wasn’t injured :(

  • 3 Jayden // Jan 2, 2013 at 11:10 AM

    RIP Blog :’(

  • 4 Tsunki // Jan 2, 2013 at 11:13 AM

I think mos would prefer to see Anita at RB and Perchinho in the middle for this one. Actually glad Willo is back considering the options available. Santon should stay back a bit today and absorb pressure is the aim of todays game, its only a few days ago we ran out of juice.

  • 5 Tsunki // Jan 2, 2013 at 11:14 AM

Jayden if you dont mind I will do the blog killing :)

  • 6 Jayden // Jan 2, 2013 at 11:15 AM

Not forgetting they played the chavs recently too…

  • 7 Jayden // Jan 2, 2013 at 11:16 AM

Oh sure, go ahead Tsunki ;)

  • 8 NUFCarter // Jan 2, 2013 at 11:18 AM

    jayden @1

    100% agree with that

  • 9 Williamsonsuks // Jan 2, 2013 at 11:22 AM

No more news on Debuchy, passing medical or agreeing personal terms?

  • 10 Tsunki // Jan 2, 2013 at 11:25 AM

…although Fellaini is pretty good at holding the ball up, what with elbows and head butts and what not. Should be interesting seeing his 1-on1′s with Cheick.

I see hilarity ensued last night with an irate itk offering Jail out ha ha. It gets mad here around this time. BTW have any itk’s come up with anything more than a couple of guesses yet? surprise me, go on.

  • 11 Magpies-till-d3ath // Jan 2, 2013 at 11:25 AM

Where is this whole Baines and Pienaar thing coming from?

  • 12 tequilamag // Jan 2, 2013 at 11:26 AM

Tsunki, your not a purple poster till someone has challenged you to a fight on the blog.

  • 13 tequilamag // Jan 2, 2013 at 11:28 AM

MTD I was wondering that as well, I can`t see any reports to say they are doubts.

  • 14 Jayden // Jan 2, 2013 at 11:30 AM

Just checked Everton’s website, nothing on them there.

  • 15 Slank // Jan 2, 2013 at 11:32 AM

    Jayden @ 2

I’m not sure Baines and Pienaar are out (pity). Everton have not said anything other than Gibson and Hibbert are out with injuries. Fitness tests are awaited on Neville, Coleman and Mirallas.

Ed’s team looks about right to me although I think Perch is not as good as Anita at right back.

  • 16 Jail for Ashley // Jan 2, 2013 at 11:34 AM

    Ha ha Tsunki ,
I must have missed that ,who was it :-)

  • 17 Tsunki // Jan 2, 2013 at 11:34 AM

    tequila – :)

SSN saying Neville likely to start? Worrying stats include Newcastle have conceded most goals from headers, Everton scored most bar man U from them. Do our CB’s have lead boots? Is Timmy rubbish at claiming ?

  • 18 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jan 2, 2013 at 11:35 AM

Yes Tequila and if he had signed another Benny, Cabs and even someone better than Colo we might be CL contenders!

…where does the excuses stop? Better can alwaysadd quality to the team (we should have signed another CB in the summer) but our team was good enough for that was the goal for the season. January would always come around to evaluate.

  • 19 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jan 2, 2013 at 11:36 AM

*should have said we can always add more quality…

  • 20 Tsunki // Jan 2, 2013 at 11:38 AM

Jail I wondered why you didnt reply ha ha. He even specified where he was drinking before the match and everything. Hang on I will go have a trawl…

  • 21 Jail for Ashley // Jan 2, 2013 at 11:38 AM

    Jesper
If our goal was to narrowly avoid relegation then you might end up being right.

  • 22 gfp13 // Jan 2, 2013 at 11:40 AM

Tsunki- I don’t know whether krul is dodgy on crosses but I’ve always been a bit sceptical of him for that, he’s a great keeper tho. But it seems when he catches the ball he catches it when it’s went by him in the air, rather than in front or even above his head. He seems to be stretching and leaning backwards to me, I’ve noticed him do it a few times where I think he’s missed it and then last minute he gets it when it’s already passed him. Must admit don’t know if it is a common occurrence or if it’s just the times I notice it that stick in my head. But that is a thought that could be why we concede headers, maybe the coaches have told him to stick on line because of this

  • 23 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jan 2, 2013 at 11:42 AM

JFA…I don’t really care if I am right or if ppl believe we were relegation fodder just because we didn’t sign more firs team platers!

…it was the same song last season – this team was/is good enough for a top 10 finish not matter how Tequila nd you word it mate :-)

  • 24 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jan 2, 2013 at 11:43 AM

    * first team players (this tablet is really…) :-(

  • 25 Tsunki // Jan 2, 2013 at 11:48 AM

    Ok Jail –

    http://www.nufcblog.com/2013/01/01/has-shola-ameobi-pulled-out-of-africa/

@post 270 , Fog on the tyne said this after your jest about him working offshore for so long he must have barnacles on his legs…

    ‘JFA
Fcuk u ya 2 bob ringo cunj i aint a bullshitter. Tell ya what i drink in companions club behind east stand i’ll in for about half 5 tmoro night, come on down and we’ll have a straightner. If ya do make sure you bring a f*****g big white flag nice and high so i can see it! We’ll see who the bull shitter is!’

Who says culture is alien to the NUFCblog? I feel a bit dirty pasting that actually.

So. Where are you going for a pint before the match? ;)

  • 26 BelfastMagpie // Jan 2, 2013 at 11:49 AM

There’s actually people who still hang of every word these Itk’s say like.

    It’s all guesswork.

The best one has to be the anfield mole. Lol

He even had a picture of a mole as his profile photo. ;-)

  • 27 Transfer Sage // Jan 2, 2013 at 11:50 AM

Interesting game tonight. They have strength with anichebe and a good finisher in jelevic.

Fellaini will be useful too but hopefully tiote can stick to him and keep him under control.

Cisse on the right won’t work tonight, defending baines and pienaar is hard for even defensive minded players.

Maybe have cisse on the left to let him cut in and shoot if we insist with sticking with Ba as the striker (ideally Ba on the left for this one but he is scoring so makes sense to keep him central)

I wouldn’t mind Jonas and perch at right back and right mid. Perch is ok at full back when he just sits back.

I’d have a midfield of Anita, tiote and marv, marv will offer some creativity which is what we need as it will be hard to shut Everton out.

2-1 to the toon, keep optimistic, sick of going into games with he mindset of we will lose.

    Howay the lads

  • 28 tequilamag // Jan 2, 2013 at 11:51 AM

Jesper, it`s not an excuse it`s a simple matter of numbers of quality replacements for injuries. When cabs and HBA were fit although performances were not great we did not lose 8 games out of 10. If your theory is correct that lack of signings is not a significant factor than why do we need signings now,?

  • 29 Tsunki // Jan 2, 2013 at 11:51 AM

Although I must say Harps and even Shay never really bossed their areas although they were great shot-stoppers. Tim seems to have more to say about his area, but he seems to be a typical Newcastle goalie for not coming out and punching the ball straight through an opponents head ha ha.

  • 30 BelfastMagpie // Jan 2, 2013 at 11:51 AM

    Haha

That’s a cracker. Jail watch your back !

  • 31 Tsunki // Jan 2, 2013 at 11:52 AM

Sing with me now….Theeeeeee Fog on the Tyne is all….yours.

  • 32 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jan 2, 2013 at 11:53 AM

Belfast…the anfield mole was genius )

…did you read his blog entrance about the whole experience? Priceless :-D

I have a friend who is a Liverpool fan (yes go figure) I still laugh at him lol

  • 33 Transfer Sage // Jan 2, 2013 at 11:55 AM

Of course lack of signings is important.

If you think we had signed messi, ronaldo, kompany, yaya toure and xavi we would be doing much better.

Obviously that’s the extreme but sure there is middle ground where signing a good CB and RB plus another quality winger we would (not guaranteed but in theory it would help us) be further up the table as we would have a better quality starting 11 and more quality in depth.

I’m not saying he current players shouldn’t be performing better, as they really should, we are better than what we have shown.

But this season look at man utd and man city. Man utd signed better players in the summer than city did. And look which one is sitting clear at the top now.

  • 34 Nufc-83 // Jan 2, 2013 at 11:55 AM

If Pards plays Cisse out on the right tonight i will hunt him down and rip his grey wig off.

  • 35 Big Pappa Cissé // Jan 2, 2013 at 11:56 AM

Has Debuchy not signed yet like ? . They are leaving it a bit late if we are going to parade him round like a prize bull before the Everton game :)

  • 36 Blaydon-Toon // Jan 2, 2013 at 11:57 AM

Tunski you are now officially Barry hern :-) Can we get the fight on pay per view ?

  • 37 Toon-Prodigy // Jan 2, 2013 at 11:58 AM

Just read one headline in the shields gazette.

    “Williamson back to contain Fellaini”

Im not normally one for doom and gloom, but this dosn’t inspire a great deal of confidence in me. Lets hope Mike can get him sent off ; ) On the plus side, debuchy in the ground tnite. No Boo’s!

Sure that agent itk guy had 30 thousand followers & got deal after deal right for about 18 months.

Then he admitted he was just a wind up merchant & was doing it to show how easy it was to be itk. Lol

Some really daft people in this world like. ;-)

Gone all quiet on the ITK front!

  • 44 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jan 2, 2013 at 12:12 PM

Tequila…in the summer we needed a CB which we didn’t get (is was a gamble)

…january would always come and you can evaluate – it is here and still need a CB, a right back since Simmo is leaving and a forward cause Ba and Cisse don’t work together and Pardew likes to play with two forwards sie by side.

Stop with the hindsight. We could have bought all this players and be hit by more injuries – then what? You can only olan so far.

The truth is that Pardew haven’t very good at using that he had at disposal in the PL matches – always playing the same players when available and more or less the same subs.

Lack of transfers are just side product of whathas happened this season; it really doesn’t explain why we are relagation fodder. Look at the teams infront of us; look at the squad size, injuries and so forth. We are not in any worse really. When wr played Swansea they had more injuries than us but you don’t hear Laudrup complaining. We are complaining because we are down in the gutter instead of getting on with it.

So if you want to believe it is down to lack of transfer activity, then do so :-) I honestly don’t care. I am past that and on with it!

  • 45 proudtobageordie // Jan 2, 2013 at 12:12 PM

    it’s all gone quiet

  • 46 Tsunki // Jan 2, 2013 at 12:17 PM

GFN France recording a done deal on Debuchy 14 hours ago. The whole saga is well documented and leaked to press to end speculation and the merry-go-round in summer. Look at the Cisse deal – total shock, so how come this one is known by world+dog well in advance? I think even I posted a month ago that he would come in January along with my usual rendition of the shipoopee/debuchy song, just to annoy everyone. More than usual I mean. :)

  • 47 Daley_Toon // Jan 2, 2013 at 12:17 PM

i expect it’ll all be quiet then BOOM Debuchy standing at Benton holding the shirt!

  • 48 HullMag6 // Jan 2, 2013 at 12:17 PM

I wonder who else will be at the game(striker) as hinted by daily fail when Ba/Chelski news broke?

    Any quesses/hopes?

I’ll be obvious – hope its Remy.

    Anyone else?

  • 49 Tsunki // Jan 2, 2013 at 12:19 PM

IIIIIN the RED Corner – we have Jail “I love Mike” Fo. Ashley and in the BLUE corner, Fogon “Barnacle Legs” Thetyne.

BARNACLE BILL is in da house lol

  • 54 Toon XI // Jan 2, 2013 at 12:31 PM

I hope I’m wrong, but I don’t see us winning tonight. Everton bossed us last time out. We needed the refs help to get a couple of legit goals called back. We were healthy back then and absolutely struggled against them.

Jelavic makes me nervous. Our backline better be up for it.

  • 55 Mister Tuff // Jan 2, 2013 at 12:31 PM

Just read the “fight invitation” @25.
Can’t see anything untoward in it – a friendly north eastern greeting accompanied by an invitation to have a relaxing drink together.

  • 56 tequilamag // Jan 2, 2013 at 12:46 PM

Jesp, so your saying in the Summer we could have done with a CB. Which is exactly what I was saying in the Summer so hardly hindsight is it, more blatantly obvious.
At no point have I said lack of signings is the only reason for our problems. You think it`s a minor issue and Pardews tactics are the big problem I think Pardews tactics have been constrained by lack of options.. To suggest he always plays the same players and tactics is bizarre. The running motif you have had for months is Pardew should “kill his darlings”, he has changed tactics and player 451 433 and still results have not improved though many aspects of performance have.
Perhaps it is time for you to consider whether your darling theory that the squad we have is good enough to cope without HBA Cabaye and Taylor needs killing off.

  • 57 Transfer Sage // Jan 2, 2013 at 1:26 PM

    Tequila

Its like you say. Everything has gone against us this season.

We have been missing Taylor (both), cabaye, obertan, tiote, perch, Ben arfa all for some part of the season.

We also have underperformed from a player point of view and also from a management point of view.

We failed in the transfer market to strengthen the obvious area, defence, as you say it’s not hindsight as we have know this for over a year now.

We basically need to get as many if those things put right as possible. We need to strengthen in the window.

I think pardew did persist too long with Jonas and with Ba and cisse as a pair (now cisse wide isn’t great) but at the end of the day all things have been a problem.

Who knows more signings could have meant more options and also more rest so possibly less injuries. Hyperthetical I know but there is some basis to it.

    Cisse

(Of course, the versatility of Anita, Jonas & Perch would allow any of them to switch positions, but this is how I would line them up.)
