Newcastle have today opened talks with 25 year-old Marseilles striker Loic Remy, according to reports in France, and Newcastle will try to close the deal as quickly as possible, although Tottenham and QPR are also interested.
Loic Remy – Newcastle said to be in negotiations
Newcastle would have tried to bring in a new striker whether or not Demba Ba moved on and if the Senegal man leaves we’ll have only tow experienced strikers, although it looks like Sola Ameobi will not be going to the African Cup of Nations.
The reports from France suggest Newcastle contacted Marseilles officials earlier this week, after Demba Ba’s advisers met with Chelsea officials in London on Sunday night and negotiations have started in earnest over the last couple of days.
The price is estimated at £10M and it would be another great singing to go with French International right back Mathieu Debuchy, with reports from his pal Yohan Cabaye saying he has already officially signed for Newcastle.
Debuchy and Remy would both be excellent signings for Newcastle.
Here’s hoping.

I could see this guy having really hleping us. He’s quality and would probably benefit from changing scenery and being with national teammates at Frenchcastle United
Sign him up!

I pray that he wasn’t watching last night.

Would be a great signing for us.
Also Ricardo quaresma is available on a free as he has no club. At 29 would he be worth a punt. 3 good years left in him and won’t be losing money as a free transfer. Always had talent and maybe being released will give him a kick up the backside he might have needed.
A premier league in might be the challenge he needs.

I can’t see this story anywhere. Anyone got any links?

If we grab him for 10 Mil I don’t see Ashley spending much or any more after that sadly.

That ‘stance’ sums up my feelings well. However in my opinion, the main issue is a further question:
Will he be sacked? Definitely not.
The problems come from the owner accepting mediocrity, because money comes from staying in the Premier League and nothing else. The only significant step up in terms of revenue is finishing 4th – but that would requiring gambling and investing heavily, which we saw last summer is not in the plan.
Quite simply, I believe that the probability of Pardew being sacked is 0, and I believe that the reason for that is that the board would be just as happy with a 17th place finish as they would be with 8th.
8 toon1707 // Jan 3, 2013 at 7:23 PM
This would be a quality signing that would give the team and fans a huge lift if we can pull it off. Although as always I will not get excited till I see him on the pitch with pardew holding his toon scarf aloft

Interesting. If we can get him for reasonable wages it might be worth a shot. But I haven’t watched him much lately.

From previous thread.
I just wanted to say that using moyes record could help.
It shows that a very talented manager (many regard him as this now) had a rocky start to his career at Everton.
This was also he case at man utd with Alex ferguson. Took 3 years to settle in.
Now I’m not saying this directly relates to pardew as circumstances may well vary.
What I wil say though is with a limited budget, limited quality in depth and a few injuries. (Not forgetting some unusual tactics from the manager himself) our season has stuttered.
Pardew has always been sacked after his difficult second year. He has never been given another season to see if he can correct the problems.
There is nothing to show he can get things back on track but there is also nothing to show he can’t as he was sacked before being given the chance.
I’m not saying pardew is nlameless as he deserves criticism if he got praise last year. But I think the earliest the club should reasses his position is during the summer.
16 toonicle // Jan 3, 2013 at 7:26 PM

23 geordie157 // Jan 3, 2013 at 7:30 PM
Transfer Sage, i quite like the Quaresma idea. He can play on both wings, just depends on whether his wage demands would be silly and also whether his attitude fits as he’s had several fallings out with players and managers recently.
Get him in til the summer and let Fergs go out on loan for a bit to develop further.
Can’t wait to see the Debuchy signing made official, Remy despite his goal record this season will also be a great signing!

He seems to think being coy or playing word games will help him in negotiations or something. I don’t get it. We all know what’s needed to stop the leaking of goals, just get it done Pards.
26 Dannyo // Jan 3, 2013 at 7:31 PM
Great that we’re in for him, but a defender should be first on the list, then the striker.
Love it or hate it, we have options, altho not great ones, for strikers.
Not as much at CB.
27 Toon-Prodigy // Jan 3, 2013 at 7:32 PM
Excellent news. Lads, I dont think there will be any messing this window. If he wants to come here, then we will get him if he is within our budget. Which seems to be the case because we have Got a good feeling about this player, cant see him being utilised in a 4-4-2 tho. Strictly 4-3-3 out on the left. “Demba style”

Doom
Wenger/ SAF have at time admitted things……our team shape and confidence looks shattered as soon as a team enter our half……and we back, back, back away inviting teams to thrash us! AP has seriously co@ked this season up…….injuries aside I still do not think our performances have been good enough.
Agree £20m should be minimum to protect investment of EPL considering the xtra £30m on top of what we get now for TV rights nxt season…….but sadly its all the same music coming from SJP…….amazed that the egos and arrogance of the 3 wise men can even fit inside our great stadium! We deserve so much better IMO.

Contrary to what others say, i really think we have a better chance of getting Remy then Spurs do. We already have numerous French players here to attract him although our league position does not help atm. HBA, Cabaye, Debuchy, Marveaux and Obertan should be enough to attract him, fingers crossed.
37 jimiley // Jan 3, 2013 at 7:41 PM
We have lost 9 out of 11 and only won 2 in the last 15!!!!! Thats freefall. The manager seems to think that things will improve when stars return. The same stars who got us in this mess in the first half of the season. Still no real dissent in the ground apart from boos at the end. Any other manager would have been well sacked by now. It must be the worst run in our history. We are sleepwalking towards relegation and nobody can be really bothered to do anything about it. Mashers has cowed everyone into silence. The Cockney mafia have won in the Geordie heartland. How sad is that!!!!

Krul
Debuchy Colo Taylor Santon
Anita Cabaye Tiote
Ben Arfa Cisse Remy
That is a dynamic team. I would just be worried about playing a club with strong wingers as we would be a bit exposed in that regard, but otherwise that is a very good team that would terrorize defences acrossnthe PL.
46 sirtoongospel // Jan 3, 2013 at 7:44 PM
I saw what Keegan said, and he also said that Cisse couldn’t be a main striker. Remember Andy Cole KK? It depends what type of team you are building as to the type of focal point you have. Players range from Carroll to Walcott. It depends on what we are trying to achieve. I think a player like Remy would suit us as Pards likes counter attacking football. That’s great, but we need 2 defenders on top of Debuchy to give us the solid base we need.
Remy plus top CB this window and we would be looking canny
47 irishtoon99 // Jan 3, 2013 at 7:44 PM

48 geordie157 // Jan 3, 2013 at 7:45 PM
Obertan is definately a confidence player, but seems to like player left wing and having Marv in the side seems to be helping him to as Marv is more creative. If Obertan can learn to mix things up ie cut in now and then or run to the by line, plus work on crossing he might just become a good prem player.

I understand the similarities and in the 2 cases you have given it shows that those managers were given time and went on to do well.
But both showed great skill and ability previous to their appointments and even in the face of adversity showed they had the quality.
In my eyes we have not played good football under Pardew full stop.
The 5th place finish and the current fiasco in terms of footballing quality isn’t too far apart and I dare anyone to say it is. The thing about this year is we have had less luck. That alone shows me that Pardew isn’t the man for us.
However our owner won’t even get a decent CB in so I doubt he would bring in a better manager.
Pardew should be sacked because he isn’t good enough for NUFC.
Pardew shouldn’t be sacked because of the man that owns NUFC.
It is a juxtaposition from which there is no escape.
Whatever happens, we are stuck with Mike Ashley, Llambias and Pardew but I wave my right as a supporter to support them.
I have given my all to the team. I will cheer on the lads who put on the shirt, no matter who they are or what position they get played in, if they give their all. I will never support the management team until they give their all too. They do not, have not and IMO never will.

51 LeedsMag // Jan 3, 2013 at 7:45 PM
Would be pleased to see Remy arrive but refuse to get enthuiastic until Jan 31st – been here too may times before with supposed deals all but done and smoke and mirrors from Pardew and the board – its easy to to get the fans to forget the run of results with optimistic talk of signings.
On a recurrent thread, the defence is getting slagged off(with a little justification),but defence starts up front and its noticeable that a lot of other teams are better organised and have a front line and wide players that chase and close much better, quicker and harder than ours eg Everton. Although Obertan is improving and Marveaux showing quality on the ball, you get next to nothing from them defensively – and as for playing Cisse wide – enough said. Our back 4 was protected much more last season.
You can play good football and be hard working and pressing without the ball – Barcelona anyone?
52 Ketsbaia9 // Jan 3, 2013 at 7:45 PM

55 NUFCarter // Jan 3, 2013 at 7:46 PM
Drenthe was without a club for ages then he joined besiktas late in the year. He was very good for everton and I don’t see why they didn’t sign him up or any other prem team. Scott Sinclair on loan would be brilliant and he’s English but that deal won’t happen. With Pardew stating we have a tight budget although mike Ashley’s one of the richest men in England I suppose it puts teams off for demanding more money off of us when we bid then saying we have 50 million and teams asking double the price tag like they would with city. The funds are in Ashley’s pocket they’re just not available it seems unless the decoy is right
56 Spuggy // Jan 3, 2013 at 7:46 PM
Very premature judgement of pardew who is only in his second full season. Ferguson and Moyes (considered the best managers in the EPL) had shakey starts for a few seasons.
Patience, we’ve had far too much marry go round with managers, we need stability. Once we have half of our team of quality players back who have been missing lets see what happens first eh before we go making silly statements like pards our. How quickly people forget last seasons miracle.

We must must must get a proper defensive, strong centre half!!
59 Far East Magpie // Jan 3, 2013 at 7:48 PM
Not sure how true the news is….I thought Pardew is supposed to have a meeting with Derek Llambias and Lee Charnley this afternoon?
Is it feasible to meet Loic Remy (or his agent) so soon after an internal meeting in the afternoon? Remy or his agent would probably need to be on Tyneside on standby while waiting for Derek and Lee to finish their discussion with Pardew…
60 Spuggy // Jan 3, 2013 at 7:49 PM
Why are people posting the 4-5 players we need to buy. It’s fantasy – pards has said we will sign 2 players MAYBE 3.
Debuchy and a CF are a certainty. MAYBE a CB.
That’s the reality. And only players who are a) available b) want to come and c) represent value for money (on the cheap!).
Manage your expectations people.

My honest opinion would be sell Tiote now in this window if we can and use the 10 or so Mil we get from that for a class CB and a good wing player. All Tiote does is co@k up passes and give away free kicks this season. Anita can play his position better.
63 YankToonFan // Jan 3, 2013 at 7:49 PM

66 GeordieTwo // Jan 3, 2013 at 7:50 PM
Just read Kevin Keegan’s recent comments. He thinks Cabaye is the key to our season and is much more important to the team than Ba. But then he turns around and says Ba is the complete centre forward and Cisse probably isn’t. I’ve always been puzzled by Keegan. I have seen Cabaye play some good and not so good games for us but he has never had the impact that Ba had as far as I can see. Maybe Ba was too selfish but his skill on the ball was undeniable. A tremendous 1 in 2 scorer and we are going to miss him.

I accept they have both managed much better especially ferguson at Aberdeen.
But I think the football has and hasn’t improved. We have made a lot of negatives in some of our long ball play (highest percentage his year in the league) and also seem to collapse to easily in defence.
But there are positives too. End of last season saw some terrific football with 433 or whatever version you wish to call it.
Whilst we have switched back to a long ball maybe the return of cabaye and Ben arfa and only having cisse will make pardew go back to that successful formation and stick with it this time.
It’s all ifs and buts at the moment but you never know

We only have quality players in a first 11. When a player is injured/suspended/international duty we have a substantial drop in quality in the replacement.
That’s the difference between us and top teams. And that had been a major factor this season.
Those criticising Tiote – well a) he has been out a lot with suspension and injury and b) he has had a second rate midfield around him for the most part. He is a quality player and when he returns from ACoN and plays with Cabaye, HBA and Anita I think we will see a different player.

Also Pardew has told tiote to calm down on the pitch. He’s not aggresive as he used and although he gets yellow carded a lot he still played well last season and that’s when there were rumours going round Chelsea were gonna make a 20 million bid because that’s how much he’s worth. I must admit he was class last season.
81 Beattie25 // Jan 3, 2013 at 8:00 PM
Am I the only one who thinks we won’t actually sign a CB?
I am convinced that Pardew believes in Williamson and that he will have told LLambias he will be enough until the Summer.
All the talk from Pards is of Debuchy and a striker. Have a sickly feeling…
82 toonheroes // Jan 3, 2013 at 8:01 PM
I am gutted that we are in the situation we are but the mood on here has been rightfully doom and gloom with arguments about where our ambitions lie to should we sack Pardew. Fair enough.
I feel for the players though during all this. I actually think they are really trying but they just don’t know each other very well yet. They are all probably as shocked as we are at where they are right now and if any of them read this blog they’re gonna get very down.
We have had no consistency with the starting line-up at all this season. All the other teams know us now so the surprise factor from last season is gone. Pardew has had a stinker this season as far as i am concerned and I’m convinced the board is partly to blame for that. I actually feel for Pardew as well. He takes it to heart. The club now needs some hands on leadership.
We did something different last year and tapped into a market that was relatively unknown to English clubs. No-one had heard of Cabbaye in England before he joined (well a lot of people).
The problem is we have laid our cards for everyone to see on the table, partly due to DL’s stupid outbursts. Everyone now knows what we want, what we are prepared to pay, how horrible we can be and what colour our underwear is (purple). In a nutshell we are altogether too predictable and that shows in our playing style as well. I think the whole management of the club got carried away with our success last season and have really been caught napping. Sometimes you have to develop a plan and not just stick to it.
I hope the meeting today was productive for all our sakes. Someone has come up with a plan..and fast.
It’s now taken me so long to formulate this post that in the meantime we’ve probably signed 4 players. Here’s hoping.

Yes mate, and he looks fantastic. Watch the odd Anderlecht game for Ronald Vargas – a great talent – and Kouyate has caught my eye.
He’s scores a few aswell, wouldn’t be out of our price range, we could probably double his wages whilst still keeping them realistic and within our budget.
..and more importantly, as you say, he’s that big, athletic, QUICK (very quick for his size) centre back, that we’ve been shouting out for.
Great suggestion.

A strong possibility we won’t sign a CB like. I think that’s 3rd on our list. With Saylor coming back maybe the thinking is can he se the season out with injury – a big risk, one we already took in the summer and look where we are now.
Makes you wonder where we’d be if we’d brought a CB and RB in he summer (and a striker indeed).
Pards said this window is difficult – then buy in the summer when we finished 5th and had Europa and momentum!!! Huge chance missed to get in 3 top quality players.

I know he has no end product whatsoever, but the last 3 games we have had a result we could have tried to hold on to, and Jonas would have helped. His work rate and defensive qualities would have seen us concede a few less in the 2 away games that’s for sure. A bit like Shola, he might be a good player to bring on to see a game out.

Good post toonheroes@82. A lot of sense there. All round disappointing season with a lot of fingers to be pointed starting at the top. But to continue to employ Llambias is inexcusable. The man is an utter fool. No other club at any level would have him. This is down to an inability to assess talent properly. Ash/Llam are in denial about the poor quality of some of their players. The bottom line can’t always be cheapest is best. Willo was cheap but is useless. Simpson was cheap but proved to be poor. Perch was cheap but is not a defender as has been shown on numerous occassions. The list goes on. Llambias is a sow’s ear not a silk purse.

Geordie two if we bring in a proper CB he wont be competing with stevie taylor he’ll be walking straight past him
Stevie taylor has had just as bad of a season as willo in fact willo may just be edging him but taylor gets a pass because he’s got the same accent as us
For a professional athlete, to get paid the money he does, to start the season with a gut a set of t1ts shows just how cocky and complacent our backline have become
If/when we get a new CB who is ‘competing’ for a place against taylor and willo then theres no point bringing one in might as well try the youngins as we need a upgrade not more of what we have already

Does anyone really think Ashley gives a toss about NUFC
1)He is a billionaire who has let Ba go for the sake of £6 mill spread over 3 years(which im sure would of meant Ba signing a new contract
2)How much is a 25 goal a season striker going to cost us and do you really expect Ashley to pay £12-15 mill when we already had one in our team and he wouldnt pay £6 mill to keep him
I really think Ashley is preparing to take us down again and then sell all of the top players again as he thinks we will get back as easy as last time but hey ho thats my feeling

Some good points tads @114. We did play well last season with the Saylor/Colo partnership but I would love to have a top quality CB beside Colo. Someone with size and power and a real football brain. A bigger Colo in other words. I would accept Saylor on the bench but will we really spend enough to get a good CF and a good CB in the same window? I have my doubts. Pardew already sounds cautious about incoming. It’s pathetic but it sounds like what Ash/Llam would do. Spend as little as possible and hold their breath hoping we stay up.

why do people keep slating willo? admittedly he isnt a starter, but hes more than capable of having a good game . we need players like him and taylor as cover and colo and a new signing as the starting CB’s. shipping out players who arent starters is what gets you into trouble, as soon as your quality gets tired/injured/out of form you only have kids. like best, why we got rid of him i dont know, i’d prefer him to ameobi.
i think the team is missing gutierrez too, he doesnt offer much going forward. but he keeps possesion draws fouls and covers santons runs.
i really dont like to see loyal players like guti and willo and the likes get slated by supposed fans, a good team doesnt have to include expensive foreign big name players. people need to show respect to our players instead of writing them off and labeling them sh1t the first chance they get. the board is solely responsible for this run because they havent invested after last seasons success. shearer did an article and he was spot on but yet again the owners have learnt the hard way.

papattack, a lot of people were starting to warm to Willo this year, then he had a couple of unlucky games and he’s villain number 1 again. Read some of the comments above re Steven Taylor after he could do no wrong last year. Some people need to sort their attitude towards the team out. Players have good days and bad days, just like the rest of us. Willo’s only real fault is that he was brought in as cover, has been forced into the first team frame due to lack of depth (Pay attention MA). He’s been unlucky, but he isn’t a bad player. Those who think Steven Taylor is a bad player need to get a grip too. That lad puts himself in harms way to defend a goal better than any other player I have seen at the toon in years.

149 Jail for Ashley // Jan 3, 2013 at 8:52 PM
A couple of things,
Firstly, unless Pards is playing mind games one or two signing is simply not enough for the simple reason Debuchy is looking like being one of those two then if we are to bring in a replacement for Ba then that looks like the three year old CB problem isn’t about to be resolved how this affects Collo ,Williamson and the permanently injured STaylor we can only wait and see.
Secondly,
The only reason we had a quick promotion last year is because Mike Ashley couldn’t offload the spine of the team Collo ,Nolan ,Burton etc for the simple reason they were on Membership wages and nobody at the time was prepared to match that, from what we are led to believe all the players now have delegation wages tied into their contracts ,if Mashey is stupid enough to allow us to go down there will be an exodus of senior players, leaving us with our current crop of reserve players who should have and could have had Championship experience to pull us out of the sh1t.
150 nick_9 // Jan 3, 2013 at 8:53 PM
If we don’t sign a cb this window it’s an injustice and I will feel robbed. We have needed one for so long so they need to cut the carp and sign one. The lack of signings has been very counterproductive. Again Pardew says one or two signings when we need 3 minimum. No strength at the back and none up top. Simmo is less of a weakness than Willo is so I would say a cb is more Important than Debuchy. Debuchy, cb and a striker are a must.
If cisse and colo get injured what on earth would our team look like?
As for Pardew I was never a fan to start with so that’s perhaps why he wears thin on me now. My biggest criticisms are that he is very stubborn with set pieces, starting eleven and rarely admits he was wrong. I see him as someone who was put in place as a cheap replacement who is prepared to cope with the Derek and mike so they can get aware with more whilst he takes the brunt of it. I suspect Alan is now getting a more torrid time than he thought and is bearing the brunt of fans frustrations. That will probably be twisted as me saying he is a guinea pig who doesn’t want to win but I don’t mean that. He is a pr man for those two muppets upstairs but he does have a desire to win which I suspect is going to start straining his relationship with m and d. If I was in charge and they refused the money to sign a central defender I would walk. You judge a manager on more than just a league finish that is why I don’t want him sacked on the back of this season. I do however find his subs, starting eleven, reasoning and press conferences very frustrating. On the back of our worst results in at least twenty years it would be easy to sack him and I would like to see a manager with a better history of achievements come in and then aim for consistency with him. I’ve been reading Pardews history at previous clubs and at hasn’t enthused me anymore, couple that with two business men above him who are learning about the game and its food for thought. Because we would end up with an even worse manager if we was to sack Alan I think we should keep him. I just hope for the good of the team, fans and everyone’s perception of him that he can persuade the board to sign the required players and try and improve in every aspect especially Defense. And for the record I’m not a fan who leaves early or boos at the end of the game, I stay the duration and only air my views on here as I’m usually pretty speechless and down after leaving St James
151 DanRo // Jan 3, 2013 at 8:53 PM
Excellent stat on Hatem Ben Arfa and his influence on our team. He has the most dribbles per match of any player in the PL – 4.9. That is over 1.7 dribbles more than the next player Suarez. We miss Ben Arfa so badly because he commits the opposition and often drags 2-3 men around him creating space for others.

Problem with Willo is that he has been to blame for most of the goals we’ve conceded this season. The guy is a huge liability and I’m not placing all the blame on him, the rest of the defense has been equally poor at some points, but he is the weakest link and its clear for all to see.
153 check the toastie // Jan 3, 2013 at 8:55 PM
Dont mind Willo, he does his best and has had to cope with Simmo outside him for the most part, an honest Pro and does his best, however should not be anywere near our first team consistently over the last 18 months, this lack of cover should have been addressed, it hasnt and who knows why.
Remember we tried to fleece Watford for Marriapa this time last year as we were lacking, it was said that we would not go back in for Mariappa last summer as we would get better. Guess what we got no-one.

The fact of the matter is that if fat ash had half a brain he wudnt of put that stupid release clause in dembas contract then we wudnt be in this situation in the first place. I doubt we will get remy if we have no money to spend wich is bollocks in the first place wheres the 35 million from big andy. We need a solid foundation anyway befor we go spendin all our money on forwards willo is not good enough its that simple!

Rotondo – Yeah he’s available for £7million as his contract runs out in 6 month… We should seriously be interested… His club and QPR are in advanced talks apparently
Sell Tiote for £12millon
Buy:
M’Vila – £7million
Sissokho – £5million
And then we instantly have one of the best midfields in the league if not Europe:

Everyone and their granny has known that a good CB has been needed for a long time but it seems the word from the terraces is ignored at club level.

Did anybody notice Shola just stood playing everybody onside in the first half in the RB spot, that was totally disgraceful laziness, he is the most annoying player ever to pull on a Toon jersey, not the shittest, just the most annoying, for all that he is supposed to care, personally the penny has never dropped with him that 100% effort is expected, amazing the tributes that he gets on here.
182 nick_9 // Jan 3, 2013 at 9:19 PM
G it’s not a case of having a few select players to say are rubbish, these players are inconsistent and people notice. Have you noticed perch gets a lot less flack now he has upped his game? The issues begin when players are consistently playing bad or not putting a shift in. Williamson tries but he evidently has flaws and cheick is correct about what was said regarding mariappa. Simpson again is average at the back but not so good going forward. Colo is looking less certain since his suspension and whilst all have been guilty of ball watching notable mentions go to collo and santon for costing us goals. Every player has flaws but its when they cost us consistently. It’s also a viscous circle as when they do something wrong the fans in the stadium all say ffs collectively which is an understandable reaction but it doesn’t help the player. Obertan again is hit and miss but he has done good since he came back from his injury and it rightly getting praise now.
As for formation I agree on 451 until or if we sign a decent striker and then it would depend on their attributes. At the minute we have a lot of midfielders available and 4:5:1, 4:3:3 or 4:2:3:1 suits those players.

It is easy being loyal when nobody else will offer you a new contract, Ameobi has been on easy street at the toon since being 20 year old.
Yes he is from the City, yes he loves the Toon, would he ever move on for more money ala Ba, of course he would, has he ever been offered double his salary, of course he hasnt, this notion that he is loyal is bullshit.
Legend my arse, its nice that he can get himself up for Derby games, shame he couldnt show more spirit in other games, he has been an embarrasment at times during his career at Newcastle, overweight and totally disinterested, he has improved a bit since his younger brother has appeared on the scene, i imagine he didnt want his younger brother hearing the crowd give himm constant pelters as it has happened many times due to lack of effort.

203 Ian Toon // Jan 3, 2013 at 9:33 PM
Tads- I agree with your comments on Saylor. When playing earlier this season he gave the impression of playing well within himself. Almost as if he was fearful of getting injured yet again. He was the weak CB. His career has stood still not helped by injury. He also gave the impression of believing the tabloid press claims fanned by Pearce that he was going to be the next Terry. Whereas he has always lacked the positional awareness that Terry has. He largely gets praise I suspect because he’s viewed as being a Geordie. Williamson is a trier but limited at PL level. A squad player. We need to buy someone at CB to complement Coloccini with pace and a presence in both boxes.
204 DanRo // Jan 3, 2013 at 9:33 PM
Check the toastie. A totally uncalled for rant @ Shola. Overweight? Mercenary? A lazy man who is disinterested? Shola never complains. He gets stick from the crowd, shrugs his shoulders and gets on with it. The guy scores crucial goals for us – i.e. QPR in our last victory. I’d imagine the physio/fitness specialists at NUFC would totally agree that he is overweight. As for a mercenary, I don’t recall there being one single issue over Shola renewing any contracts/asking for more money. I could be wrong and please someone correct me if I am but I think Check the Toastie needs to rant at his anger management councillor instead of taking his rage out on easy targets.

Taylor has always had the raw potential but due to injuries his career has certainly stalled a bit like jagelka, maybe he will be a late bloomer but it remains to be seen

We need a CB to fill the last piece of the puzzle instead of patching together a back line

Regarding the Colo’s dad story. That would actually make a lot of sense. Colo has been a shadow of himself recently, and one of the big problems we seem to have would be a lack of leadership on the pitch. It would also explain AP coming out with the story about a falling out the other day. I hope it’s not true as I do rate Colo, even though his form is currently poor (not many toon players who I could were currently in-form like).

So obviously we are after Remy who is a good player but there is a cheaper option Giuseppe Rossi at Villarreal who are now in the 2nd division of Spain an who i would think would welcome the return to the best league in the world and the best news is he’s available for a “rumoured” €4.5 Mil which is really cheap. but he is coming back from a bad injury to his cruciate ligament but look how Ba turned out with his dodgy knee. what do you all think ?

Actually, the more I look at that Collo’s dad article. I think it is from when we were looking to tie him down on a new deal and his dad was spouting off. I do remember it
268 Beattie25 // Jan 3, 2013 at 10:11 PM
I have a feeling that the Debuchy deal rests on the Ba one.
As soon as Ba passes the medical and Chelsea have given NUFC the money then Debuchy will be announced.
It’s all a bit fishy.
Regarding Colo, as I’ve been saying for a few days now, his head doesn’t seem in it. When Colo plays badly, the team play badly. The guys are looking for a leader and Colo isn’t that at the moment.
If San Lorenzo came in with a £10 million bid I’d take it and buy M’bwia and Alderwierled.

Check that’s a little harsh. Shola wanted to go play for Nigeria but we have blocked him going
271 Stovey // Jan 3, 2013 at 10:12 PM
Shola saved our bacon against QPR. if he hadn’t slotted that belting goal away we would now be joint points with 17th /18th.
He doesn’t always get it right, but its that sort of grit that will get us away from trouble and I’m glad that in this time of need he’s shown real loyalty and shunned the chance of playing in the ACN to help save the club. That can’t of been easy, not at his age, he’ll likely not get that call ever again.

What is that you hate about Ashley so much in his first season he let allardyce buy who he wanted and paid high wages. When he realised what an idiot he was he sacked him. “Mike Ashley has to be even more supportive in this window, he has to find the extra money for a striker because we’re not going to find a striker for the money we’ve received for Demba Ba.”
“Debuchy’s addition is going to help. Our distribution at the back has been a key area. It has to improve. He will definitely improve that and he will defend that side of the pitch as well as anyone in the country.”
Good quotes. I fear Pardew may be exagerating Debuchy’s ability though (;

For years ahead the money goes for that transfer… then the transfers made just for number… now is after a serious reserch… the current regime just need to be more flexible on the market and to don’t made a moves for only one target per time… do it for 2-3 and who can be taken… take it. And afterall Sheperd was blessed to have sir Bobby in the club… one in the billion gent!!! You forget that Ashley’s plan is to sell all those players at some point down the line. What if the replacements we buy don’t match up to the caliber of players we had?
On a separate note, the whole notion of being a self sustainable club is absolutely farcical. Lets face it, we are hardly a European giant and come nowhere near the revenue generated by the likes of United and Madrid. If Ashley really wants to make a profit with us being a successful club then he has to spend money.

I would agree that the club is being better managed under the current owners, however the greedy bast#rd just needs to do a little speculation on a couple of players, if he was in for the long haul there would be absolutely no problem in doing this, however we all know if an agreeable offer cam ein he would sell us in a heartbeat.
Its all just an unemotional usiness venture for him, its such a shame, he seemed to buy the club with such good intentions, however he has given up the ghost.
Squad – Krul, Debuchy, Santon, Cabaye, Ben Arfa, Collocini, Marveaux, Anita, Cisse, Ba, Obertan, etc.
I cannot really state in the last 2/3 years a bad signing that this club has made, even Gosling was worth a gamble.
The problem for me currently sits with Pardumb, he needs to change his ways, would he be sacked if we were embarrassed at Brighton, probably not, just dont get it really.

They have matched so far, pretty much anyone we have sold under Mike Ashley, we have eventually bought someone of the same or better caliber. Most clubs in the world sell players. Guess where tv money comes from? Us lot at home paying for sky. We are the revenue stream as the public. I for one would have no problem with the club taking out a 5 million loan to sign a centre back. Ashley’s unwillingness to spend his own money is costing us because he is also unprepared to find other sources of finance.

So many fans have had enough over the years and no longer feel joy at the games whilst this clan. Looking around the ground each week I think a fair few might decide not to bother spending £30 upwards to come see us in a few weeks time at home. We aren’t exactly winning any new fans as of lately or doing out to keep the casual fans coming back.

362 APBWA // Jan 3, 2013 at 11:03 PM
Debuchy is a good signing, however a replacement for Simpson- be it now or at the end of the season
We now need a replacement for Ba- not Remy, who has only scored something like 3 goals in a poor french division. Aubameyang is a good player- like Obertan with more end product who would fit in well on the wing or ST. Charlie Austin would also be a good signing, prolific.
CB is a priority, need someone to slot in well like James Tomkins, who is par with Taylor without injuries. I find it hard to believe we will attract a better option given our position.

Jesper I’m not twisting anything. Tv revenue comes from sky, espn and motd paying for rights to highlights and live games. The general public pay for subscriptions to see these or tv licenses so why cannot I not generalise tv revenue as that? I agree we haven’t been breaking even but we have been very close thanks to those accountants mike has. Only one other club in the league self finances from their profits and that’s arsenal, ask their fans how happy they are right now! For us to be able to be self sufficient and sign players we are going to need to generate a good 10-15 million profit a season. That might happen next season when revenues increase but everyone benefits from it then and will we even be in the league? Anything can happen
368 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jan 3, 2013 at 11:09 PM
nick…this are the matchday revenue from 2010 (the last released):
Newcastle’s match day revenue (£24 millions) is still the seventh best in England, but it is a long way behind Manchester United £109 million, Arsenal £93 million, Chelsea £68 million, Tottenham £43 million and Liverpool £41 million.
Newcastle’s commercial revenue of £15.8 million may be the eighth highest in the Premier League, but it is still low for a club of Newcastle’s size and history. Any comparison with the likes of Manchester United £103 million and Liverpool £77 million may be somewhat spurious, but they should still be closer to Tottenham’s £37 million.
You might expect Newcastle to earn a great deal from the sale of replica shirts, but Llambias advised that the club’s retail turnover was only £5 million, producing a miniscule profit of £100-200,000.

376 Doomslayer // Jan 3, 2013 at 11:13 PM
Prodigy & TADS
The Board’s hand has been forced by Ba going but if this is at the expense of a CB I will be very surprised. Gambling on Saylor remaining uninjured for the rest of the season is a very high risk strategy and the current back 4 needs two new starters not just Debuchy at FB. Santon has been a bit iffy recently but we just have to accept he is not the finished article yet.
We could play 4-5-1 with Cisse lone striker (like Chelski) as we have some great MF players, but if Remy and Cisse struck up a parnership we could easy run a 4-4-2 and a 4-3-3. I think this is what AP has been aiming for. Two strikers playing as a partnership is more devastating than a single striker and much harder to defend. Carr will have all this well sussed. It is not just bloggers who have immense football knowledge, management teams do too. Hopefully they have persuaded Mashley we need a CB and a quality CB too.

If Coloccini leaves, we need to replace him with Mbiwa and Alderewield and sign Douglas for free in the summer.

Sorry Jesper I could not find the article it just gave me a list of articles? I do know we made a £3 loss in 2010-2011. Last season as finishe fifth which brough in plenty more revenue, we have also been on tv a lot more because of it which is again more revenue, plus the extra sponsorships we have signed all come into effect. Three good players around 5 million in the summer is all I asked, nothing revenue breaking. If we had to sell tiote to finance the three then fair enough. We are only a few players off having a good eleven and a bit of strength on the bench which would see us right for a few years, instead we have gone without and lost money and ground on the rest.

Stevie Taylor is a half a campaign player. He can no longer be relied upon. Im not upto date with CBs as I never thought we would get one, what has it been 2 years since we first knew we needed one? It needs sorting out this window.
Im not sure about Remy in a 4-4-2. I would hate to end up in a simular Ba Cisse partnership again. I think he is more suited on the left upfront in a 4-3-3, he is really fast. Blistering.

405 nick_9 // Jan 3, 2013 at 11:30 PM
Jesper if we are to self finance then we need to raise revenue by a good twenty million and I can see that taking a while. The extra tv revenue next year will help massively providing we don’t finish around 15th then it will barely make a difference. If we finish top half of the table next season it is estimated to bring 8 million plus in extra revenue.
At the minute our recent run of results, performances and lack of signings will do nothing to help revenue increase. We struggle to sell out sjp now and won’t be winning many new fans as things are

The trouble is increased tv revenue and players wages go hand in hand so the wage bill will probably have to increase so more players don’t jump ship. Worrying times f a team then gets relegated.
If Ashley signs Debuchy this window, a centre back and a replacement for anyone who leaves, Ba? ) but the problem for me has been the fact that some people won’t see the bigger picture…
My problem with the owner is not that he won’t spend his own money, but that we would rather keep what we have than capitalize on last season and maybe sell one player in order to buy three new ones.
…maybe he has a bit cheap in the summer (as you say a higher finish means more money and basically more to spend)
He probably should have taken that gamble. Maybe we have been to caught up in wanting to emulate the likes of Arsenal and Everton – and doing it the quick and easy way.
419 ToonDownSouth // Jan 3, 2013 at 11:39 PM
I definitely can claim that. Like I said, the club accounts announced a loss of £5m excluding transfer fees, hence we made a profit of £30m that year.
If that £30m has been ‘allocated somewhere else’, then we would see a loss of £30m on the subsequent set of accounts. (Or a loss of £20m, seeing as around £8 or £9m was spent on Cisse in January).
I’m just stating facts. By ‘missing’, I clearly mean that ‘I cannot see where it has gone’.
420 nick_9 // Jan 3, 2013 at 11:40 PM
Jesper fans do expect signings every window though, it’s the nature of the game I’m afraid. High staff turnover where players come and go every window. We want to see an exciting teams winning games and think we need new players so of course we strive for them and don’t often think about the costs Etc. Its just hard for many fans to see other clubs making signings but a club with a fan base as big as ours having so little to spend. The financial fair play is all very well but we are a far cry from Europe next season and cannot see that changing without another couple of quality players coming in. Other teams have improved since last season and will strengthen further

Pardew is making the kind of noises in that article that fans like to hear. That he is of the same opinion of us that we need certain players and need to do our best to find a way to buy them. It is a worry when he said
“It’s not just a striker that’s needed, but that’s going to depend a lot on how much the striker costs us”
A cb is of equal importance if you ask me. We could field a strong 4:5:1 if we signed a cb and a rb. If we sign a striker and a rb then we still have a weak link at the back in an inconsistent Willo and an injury prone Taylor

We kept out star players and bought Anita; that was not bad, but taking our high league finish into consideration it was a really good time to strengthen. Most people would agree on that I think!
The FFP will prevent teams like Swansea, SOTON, QPR and so on to have as much fun as they did this season (maybe they’ll find a way to get around it…I don’t know)
But I would not count on MA to throw money around and if Newcastle one day should be in the hands of a supporter’s trust – then don’t count on big money being spend either. Just my opinion and I am fine with what the future holds for us

Just read the Telegraph article -link couple of posts back. If Percy Parsnips words are genuine -it appears he might he locates his cojones and left the “board” in no doubt as to what is needed this window. Looks/appears promising only time will tell.
Ref Remy -I’ve trawled the net – nothing really definitive -some websites say it is definitely on – only half possible is a reporter asking Percy about it and he replied along the lines of we’re looking at it -which could mean anything.
446 Tinman // Jan 4, 2013 at 12:04 AM
JackButler, disagree with Alder price tag there. If Ajax let their influential captain Vertonghen go for 10m then they will sell Alder for half that price.
447 Toon-Prodigy // Jan 4, 2013 at 12:04 AM
If we shell out on Remy, I can’t see us landing him. I think they will shell 4 – 5 mill out max on a CB.
I want to hear more on this Remy now we have Debuchy in. Hopefully more news at some point tommorow.

This is my first time posting, I’m a long time reader but I got so sick of the FM/Fifa managers debateing about who we should sign because they worked for them in thier saved games so I’ve come to shed some light on the situation.
I know a source very close to the scouting side of the club, not gonna discuss any names or anything because there’s no point but here’s what I know..
We have been looking at loic Remy for a long time, and yes we are looking at him this window, but according to my source signing him this window is very very unlikely, his current valuation of 9.75M is more than the board is willing to spend at this time for a player that has only scored 3 goals and it’s is not the sort of business MA likes to do in January, according to my source, MA looks at the Christmas window like a sale period and likes to target in-form players that are running down thier contract in the summer, my source believes that remy is still a possibility because of the situation we are in trying to avoid the drop but it’s very unlikely.
He did however shed some light on who we are actually looking at bringing in at the moment in this window, and he told me which defenders were highest on our shortlist, so first I’ll adress the striker situation, mobido maiga is NOT a target, he has signed for another club already and therefore cannot sign for a second club this season, that’s just lazy lazy journalism, we are currently seriously interested in yohann goufrann of bourduex and aubyemang(sp?) of st-ettien, gouffran is a 26 year old winger/striker with 6 months left on his contract and at the time of when I spoke to him had 7 goals in 14 games (could be more now?) and he fits the mould of the in-form bargain that MA likes to purchase in January, my source seems to think that he is definately the target we are looking to get through the door at this time, he didn’t say much about aubeymang so I don’t know much about him other than what’s been posted on here, but he is apparently available kind of on the cheap also…
To the defenders, we apparently were very close to signing Douglas in the summer, he was interested but with the agent problems and the Dutch passport it just wasn’t meant to be, we planned on going back in for him this month, but APPARENTLY with our current league position and reported serious interest from inter, it’s looking unlikely, not impossible but unlikely, that he will join us, my source doesn’t know exactly who we will be signing but he did list some players we are looking at in France atleast.
Nicolas Isimat-Mirin
Bruno Ecuele Manga
he believes these 2 are the most likely, moreso isimat-marin, there are doubts about Manga due to him being Gabonese, and although Gabon didn’t qualify for afcon there’s always the chance they will next year, but apparently we are very interested in him. We’ve also been watching.
Jean-Armel Kana-Biyik
Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa
Mamadou Sakho
but he reckons they are all very unlikely due to clubs not willing to sell, afcon commitments or just bigger clubs interested, but there you have it, all I know at the moment, hope I could shed some light on the window for you, atleast the French side of things
454 nick_9 // Jan 4, 2013 at 12:10 AM
Steven Taylor is 27 in a few weeks. Hasn’t really progressed much due to his injuries and is no longer the young player he once was. We need to find a way to keep him fit, he is very injury prone.
Jesper that was my point about time to invest. Pardew has said himself in that article JB posted that Debuchy probably thought he would be signing for a top 8 club. My point is it seemed like less of a task signing players in the summer after finishing fifth, any player signing now might doubt our league stature so I think it has set is back. If we can salvage the season and finish around tenth it doesn’t look as bad. If we had signed a centre back, full back and striker in the last window I think we would of had a good enough squad for a fair few years. If we had signed them then we also wouldn’t of wanted as many players now and in the summer so maybe future revenue could have been left for profit or youngsters as the squad would be more complete.
I just feel like we at a far less attractive club now as opposed to in the summer and might have a bit of squad unrest. It’s also wasted this current season, if we had signed the much needed cb in summer all I would ask for now is perhaps a replacement for Ba or if he stayed then a young up and coming cb.
455 Toon-Prodigy // Jan 4, 2013 at 12:10 AM
Mister Tuff it’s good to see.
He is basically saying, you fcuk this up this time and your taking the flak. I get the feeling he is at his wits end with the board now after the let down in the summer. All of this sh1t with the Toon right now could of been avoided. Massive amounts of stress placed under the team and managment because of a gamble that made absolutely no sence.
Problem is, I don’t know if this is a good thing or a bad thing.
1. It might kick them into gear.
2. It could spell the end for him.
We all know how Mike and Derek like their managers to be yes men and take the sh1t gracefully which THEY have caused.

460 nick_9 // Jan 4, 2013 at 12:15 AM
Tads – last summer I think we could have sold tiote, cabaye, hba and cisse for pretty large fees but now perhaps only Ben Arfa would warrant a fairly decent fee. Many prices have dropped as each game has gone on as has our attractiveness.
Not many teams have come in for Ba or Simpson this window.
It’s a shame we didn’t sign Shane long for 5 Million. Cheap and would do a job for us.

462 ToonDownSouth // Jan 4, 2013 at 12:17 AM
Hmm, I stand corrected. But I’d rather read more than 2 paragraphs of the article before coming to a conclusion
Personally I don’t care how good he currently is, he’s a well known name throughout Europe and just the kind of show of ambition that our players will desperately need having seen a shocking summer window and Ba’s departure.
463 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jan 4, 2013 at 12:17 AM
nick…I agree with you then after all
…I would try and go either all in the FA Cup or the EL depending on who we are meeting. Salvages what we can and rectify the mistakes of the summer here in January.
On paper I think we have a really great team; we need Debuchy on board, a starting CB and a replacement for Ba (preferably someone who can play wide as well)
That would be good enough for me!

Interesting link you posted re: AP in telegraph….kinda makes sense why we are not linked in with any CBs. Initially marked £15m for this window but loss of Ba has stuffed up the window for us big time…………now AP’s gotta get a replacement to Ba (no easy find – same quality etc) and also a decent CB……….got a bad feeling we’ll get Remy (++) but then get Douglas (–) as our CB cover which clearly would not be our first choice. So APs got a balancing act………oh dear this window is gonna be painful.

Tads – trouble is other teams are still strengthening. We finished above both clelsea and Liverpool yet Chelsea managed to steal one of our best players and Liverpool have made a good addition early on with Sturridge. If we can make a few addition this season and not lose any decent players in the summer ten hopefully we can catch up again next season.
Jesper – I agree on those players needed, just hope we can find a way to sign them.

not wanting to stir up unproven sources but did proud not mention Remy – I cannot remember now. I don’t know what it is but I get a good feeling about Remy -but there again been duped before.
471 JackButler // Jan 4, 2013 at 12:28 AM
I’d love to see Remy, Debuchy and Mamadou Sakho come in with Moussa Sissoko signed on a pre contract, that would be a real statement of intent and would lift everyone connected to with the club.
It would show ambition and purpose and thats why it’ll never happen.
I’m already waiting for the inevitable kick in the teeth
472 nick_9 // Jan 4, 2013 at 12:29 AM
Spread if we have around 10 million to spend I think I would rather find a cheap up and coming striker than spending the majority on the budget on one. I see a cb as more of a priority but hopefully we can get both. It’s tought because not replacing Ba at all could be a very big loss but so could not signing a centre back.

Sadly the departure has done a lot more damage than just his timing………it’s impacted on all the previously laid plans.
as we’re heavily linked with Remy and if we can secure him….which I think we will, we will end up spending probably £11m which will only leave us with £4m left…….if were lucky……..doesn’t look like Marseille are in any rush to sell Remy and that they’re gonna hanker around for the highest bidder………..loads of clubs interested in signing him………..£4m for a CB…………….is not gonna sign quality …….minimum £5m for MA/DL are a stickler for financial rules.
Do not be surprised if we end up selling some of our best players next summer either!

I’v also got a good feeling on Remy. It’s exactly what Pards is shouting for, power & pace. This lad fits the bill.
And with reports we have had a bid accepted and where negotiating of course. Granted, it’s not a concrete source. But I think this is the lad and where just waiting on Ba getting sorted at Chelski.

488 Mister Tuff // Jan 4, 2013 at 12:51 AM
Remy – just to wet your appetites downloaded below from a site about Remy -first 2 paragraphs only -later ones said he was not a particularly good creator and final pass needed to be improved.
“Loic Remy: the true meaning of a speed demon, the pace this man has can destroy a back four within seconds! One through ball over the top of the defense and 9 times out of 10 if the ball is good Remy will get it. He isn’t weak as well; usually you see lots of quick players get barged off the ball but not Remy. His pace would certainly match the EPL
The most fascinating attribute with Remy is his heading. You rarely get a pacey forward that can header a ball so well, the jump that Remy can get is truly magnificent. A lot of his goals have actually come from headers. It really makes you wonder how a player can out jump a 6 foot 4 defender with a muscle build close to the Incredible Hulk (Exaggeration). Dont get me wrong hes not tiny, but his stature doesn’t make you think he can out jump some of the defenders in Ligue 1.”

Toon prodigy – at first I thought he was being sarastic or dropping clues about Debuchy but unnoticed someone said happy birthday and checked his d.o.b
Spread – in all honesty I’m not to sure who we could sign but Douglas is rumoured to be around 4 million and when you think vertongen cost 9 million it does show quality can be found for under 10 million. I’m not sure what alderwiel would cost but I would certainly ask if I were in a position to. I had not seen much of the players we usually sign so i think it will be the same gain. A shrewd buy for a player who is out of contract soon, has a release clause or is relatively unknown. I can’t name many names as I only really watch the epl, champions league games when English teams play or mainly Barca or real, I also don’t play video games. Yanga mbiwa is a name branded about a lot for a good french centre back. Like I said I can’t name many players but if we can sign a player like santon and Debuchy for 5 million then surely we can find a cb around the same? Vertongen and long cost a combined 14 million so it can be done. Look at Michu, there are gems out there and I have faith in Carr.

Yeah you’re right I think Liverpool have been linked with him. Alan changes his mind every other day, firstly it’s 1 plus 1 for whoever leaves then its 2-3 and now it’s back down to 1 or 2. Hopefully he means 1 or 2 having already secured Debuchy. Every fan I know or have seen commenting wants at least a cb and rb and it would be farcical not to replace Ba. Sadly I can only see us spending a net of around 10 million. That might be enough if we sell some players but it really depends who we sell. We paid for a lot of the Anita transfer with the sales of best, Forster and savings from lovenkrands, smith leaving etc. I think ba has paid for most of the Debuchy fee so now it’s what ever we can amass for other signings or what Ashley is prepared to release.

I’d love it if we signed Lewis Holtby in the summer but he’ll want CL footy. Sissoko, Douglas & Pieters though are all realistic targets to get on free pre-contracts.
Imagine this team next season:

515 SupaToonKid // Jan 4, 2013 at 2:42 AM
*Loic sorry not Louc
516 Sazzer // Jan 4, 2013 at 2:48 AM
Jesé Rodríguez from Real might be possible to get on a loan or buy.
517 Toon-Prodigy // Jan 4, 2013 at 2:50 AM
Hopefully we can get deals done for Debuchy, Remy & Isimat-Mirin this Jan. that’d be a great window, plenty of pace & power there.
This is our window I think, if not Mirin, I think it could well be Tomkinson from West Ham.
No new articles?
No Nightshift articles Ed? Ahh.

We’re going down boys.
519 Sazzer // Jan 4, 2013 at 3:08 AM
I’m hoping for PEA but will be satisfied with Remy. Most of all I want us to get both. And get another CB.
Maybe if we off load some fringe player, and Tiote that might be possible.
520 Toon-Prodigy // Jan 4, 2013 at 3:09 AM
Kyo,
Well not likely man.
521 Sazzer // Jan 4, 2013 at 3:21 AM
Reading, Sunderland, QPR, Aston Villa, Wigan, Southampton are more likely to go down than us.
522 Kyo // Jan 4, 2013 at 3:23 AM
I don’t think so. I’ve prepared for the worst. I suggest you lads to do the same.
523 Sazzer // Jan 4, 2013 at 3:32 AM
I hope you prepared for the best as well. If win all games from now on, we can still be near a repeat of last year.

A repeat of last year? Bigger chance of winning the lottery.
Obatoyou
Weren’t you calling me a Mackem when I was vocal about our lack of investment in the summer? Eat Shola and rot.
526 89Norcal // Jan 4, 2013 at 3:43 AM
Come on colo, you can return to Argentina to retire but don’t leave f*****g now of all times! Look at Puyol and Veron, you got at least 3 more years to kick around in Argentina’s primera division after the summer.
527 2_goal_tino // Jan 4, 2013 at 4:06 AM
Pardew, 31st January 2012: “We have made our last bid [for Mariappa] now and it’s a final bid so if he doesn’t come today then he probably won’t come to this football club because in the summer we will look elsewhere.” …………….
Pardew, 1st February 2012 having failed to sign Mariappa: “We can hold fire for the centre-half until the end of the season and we can get a better deal [than Mariappa] in the summer.”
A CB of any form has been the priority for a year now … we’re still waiting. Have we even been in for any? There were strong Vertonghen and Mbiwa rumours but nothing materialized!
528 LEROI // Jan 4, 2013 at 5:15 AM
what about jeffery Bruma from chelsea as cb and when the remy deal goes sour what about soloman kalou from lille as the pacey forward?
529 RonVanDam // Jan 4, 2013 at 5:56 AM
If money is tight to buy a player like Remy then i say convert Oberton into a skriker, use whatever money we have to either get 2 CBs or 1 CB and Sissako and get 1 or 2 above average free agents. MA has used the 5.5m we got from BA’s sale to buy Debuecy. We have Saylor and Cabaye coming back on 12th and Arfa on the first week of Feb so we will be ok pertaing any injuries or red card
530 hdavid23 // Jan 4, 2013 at 5:57 AM
i think if it’s true that Colo wants to leave, and it’s a huge IF, it’s for personal reasons… he’ll never get as much money back home, and obviously he won’t play in the CL or things like that… it might be a family issue or something, and even though it hurts, if it’s the case we have to let him go, as family and health are way more important than any kind of sport
531 89Norcal // Jan 4, 2013 at 6:01 AM

what would we do with Cisse? Obertan is much better suited to be a winger than him.
hdavid
Most south americans want to return home to finish their careers, let’s hope he’s not ready yet. Pato just did it out of necessity sort of.
532 89Norcal // Jan 4, 2013 at 6:02 AM
Just saw Tottenham are interested in David Villa
Hopefully the get him instead of Remy
533 RonVanDam // Jan 4, 2013 at 6:20 AM

Cisse remains our main striker and Ober as a alternate at the same time use Campbell sparringly to get him ready for next year.
Also Barca has put a 16m price tag on Villa and arent interested in a loan deal.
534 Mister Tuff // Jan 4, 2013 at 6:22 AM
Villa is aged 31 -bit to old?
535 shanghai fan // Jan 4, 2013 at 6:29 AM
We do need another striker.
I think Remy will be useful for us. But, this is my honest opinion, I think he will be an average to good signing. Only because his goals to games ratio has been 1 in 2 or 1 in 3 in the french leagues (wikipedia) and no goals in 8 appearances this term – don’t know if that’s accurate
Though in our current position, he would def improve what we have got, and if he plays well on the wing and gets the best out of Cisse, then job done and that’s the best for the team.
Maybe two demba’s aren’t better than one
536 RonVanDam // Jan 4, 2013 at 6:38 AM
Sorry my ipad keeps playing up. Continued from previous post.
I don’t think spurs will pay daft money for a injury prone player who is 31. I still hope we sign remy, he’s the only player within our budget who fits into the team perfectly

Never know, Villa is still a top finisher.

Remy was actually getting great goal numbers before his little fallout at Marsielles this past season. Much like Sakho, he’s looking for a change.
The important thing is he can play as winger and a striker, so in the event Cisse is injured (in which case we would only have Shola or one of the youngsters) we will be covered and he also fulfills our needs on the wing.
It’s a good signing imo as long as the price doesn’t start going up. I can tell Pardew and Carr are really strapped for transfer funds with the utility players we have like Perch, Anita, and now a Striker/Winger.
538 shanghai fan // Jan 4, 2013 at 7:01 AM
89Norcal – hope you are right for the sake of the team.
Just remember with cisse, his goal record and goal to games was amazing in a struggling team
As was Ba’s with West Ham.
I like to look at goal/game ratio rather than total and as he has played in some decent teams, as well as an “easier” french league, would have hoped for more.
Also agree hope the price doesn’t go up, but the other club should know we’re not mugs ala debuchy and cisse transfers
539 Santon03 // Jan 4, 2013 at 7:04 AM
We know the budget is tight, but how much?
If it’s for temporary solution we could always get players on loan.
Sometimes we create our own problem by restricting transfer for players above 26 years old. We could get good players with good price, players with good experience as long as we don’t mind about their age. If it’s for 1 or 2 years contract, I think we could get someone like Carvalho, Zambrotta (currently free), Raul, even Ronaldinho for temporary until we could find someone really good within our budget and specifications.
To find talented players within our specifications is quite hard and take a long time, it’s like needle in a haystack.
540 WesJameson // Jan 4, 2013 at 7:42 AM
@ Santon03 // Jan 4, 2013 at 7:04 AM
We’ve tried that with Cacapa and Campbell, don’t think it will work mate
Having said that…David Villa’s legs are nowhere near as tired as the above twos were, i just don’t think there is a snowballs chance in hell, we will sign someone of that stature…unless its some weird freakish loan type deal?
541 Dannyo // Jan 4, 2013 at 7:43 AM
@Santon03
They’d have to be players that would improve on our own tho, cause if they don’t, u might aswell bleed the youngsters imo.
Also, i think the board has moved away from loans.
It’s like renting an apartment as opposed to buying one.
It may be a cheaper short term option, but in the end, u aren’t really investing in anything and won’t get anything back for it.
In terms of cold cash that is.
542 Slank // Jan 4, 2013 at 7:44 AM

Two centre backs required.
543 WesJameson // Jan 4, 2013 at 7:53 AM

544 Santon03 // Jan 4, 2013 at 8:07 AM
Wes Jameson
Someone not like Cacapa or Khuqi or Campbell, maybe someone like I mentioned above.
Dannyo
We have youngsters, but we didn’t use them anyway. I don’t know why, some might say they are not ready yet. So.. why not finding short term solution until they are ready, then they can take place in 1st team squad. We have Good, but we loaned him anyway. We have Streete, Campbell, Inman, but we hardly ever use them in the squad. Get the old ones, if the youngsters need 1 or 2 years to get ready to take their place in the squad then we should contracted the old ones for 1 or 2 years. As I said it’s temporary solution, until we get players within our specifications for 1st team. We are in difficult position and we need experience to handle the pressures imo.

I totally agree with you. Age restrictions should be used as guidelines with exceptions.
If there are players including free agents who are over 26 who can help the team this term to get us out of relegation then sign them to short term deals. Some players peak late into their careers like RVP, Baines and even our own Coloccini
If a player like Ronaldiho who is a legend and still has it and can help us then sign him to a 18month deal. He will raise our profile in Brazil and also help the youngsters. Everybody wins

Yup, even players like Raul who currently play in Saudi, he would love to come back to play in europe, because it’s not easy living in there.
Gattuso playing in lower league, I bet he will do better job than our “current” Tiote.
Zambrotta just bought a house in ireland, he might want to come, he said in the interview that money is not a problem to him and he is willing to play in irish lower league.

Its like saying, we should now go and buy Frank Lampard next season for a year or two, and further discourage, disparage and kick our youngsters in the teeth, and push them even further down the pecking order
Not the way forward lads, i cant even count on both my hands and feet, the amount of talented youngsters we have lost over the years, for the same sort of mentality
554 Santon03 // Jan 4, 2013 at 8:25 AM

565 cyprus // Jan 4, 2013 at 8:44 AM
Interesting that now, when we are finally playing some decent football (even in the humiliating 7-3) we aren’t getting the results. Last year, in many many games, we got the 3 points despite the fact that we were playing poorly. Moments of brilliance and luck helped us rack up the points…
It’s good that the alarm bells are ringing early – unlike our relegation year – but of course there’s a negative in that players stop believing they can win, much like in the last game which was very winnable.
Which reminds me: since we don’t have a left winger, Santon could do a Bale. Both were never very good as right backs.

Until the transfer window has closed we cant really comment on whether we will spend and bring in the right players because nobody knows if Pardew will be given a transfer chest. In my opinion Ashley needs to give him money to spend, a minimum of £20M because in the current football climate, what can you buy with £10-15M? Not much really. Ashley bought this club knowing exactly what it would entail and if he thinks he can be the owner of this fantastic club and not allow money for the right changes to be made then he owns the wrong club. I bet Ashley makes weekly if not daily changes to Sports Direct so why not to the football club? If we are going to improve and achieve anything then every transfer window must be used to make changes whether thats just 1 player in or 5 players in.
In this window we need a striker no matter what happens we need a goal scorer (HOOPER), yes we have, Cisse, Shola, Sammy, Campbell, Ranger but out of those 5 strikers in my opinion only Cisse is a guaranteed 1st team starter. Shola should only be used for the last 20 minutes in PL games and if fit to start the eaarly stages of cup games, Sammy also should be used as a sub in PL games and starter in Cup games but IMO Ranger shouldnt even be anywhere near the 1st team, Campbell needs loaned out to game experience that the Under 21s wont offer. I know the Debuchy deal is close to being finalised but we need another defender minimum (CB), if those 3 deals are done then IMO it would have been a successfull transfer window.
575 TorqToon // Jan 4, 2013 at 9:12 AM
Morning Jesper. I am well thankyou. How are you?
On Lamine Koné I’ve seen him play several times. A tall, 6’3″ centre half who has represented France at u17, u18, u19 and u20 levels. A rough diamond to say the least. He is a big old until for a young lad. 23-24 from memory, don’t think he ha been brought on properly by his club as is at the age now where he should be pushing the senior side. He is in and out of the L’Orient side. My view is he could be picked up very cheaply (£1-2mil) and developed. I like the lad, he works hard but isn’t being developed how he should. I’ve not heard a link to Newcastle with him but that’s not to say there isn’t one.
Romain Allessandrini is a class act. Plays wide left (naturally left footed) or being a striker, or wide of a front 3 (!!) Goal scoring, creative and ‘most importantly’ a grounded and down to earth player. Not favoured by the French national team (but we all know players like Ribery etc are selected regardless of form) but had gotta be given his shot soon! Valued at £3.5mil is very much value for money!!
576 Solaidback // Jan 4, 2013 at 11:54 AM
What I don’t get is, if we don’t have any funds, how were we supposed to be bringing in another striker even if Ba didn’t leave??? sure if we don’t have the funds even after Ba has gone (which until he passes a medical, which he hasn’t yet) then where is the funds coming from??
