We expect Newcastle to bring in another defender before February rolls around, but there are claims today that Newcastle have bid for a Cameroon International left footed defender who usually plays left-back.
Gaeten Bong – Valenciennes left back
Gaeten Bong is a 6’2″ 10 times capped Cameroon left back, and he is fast and strong left footed defender who is very good in the tackle, and Valenciennes president Jean-Raymond Legrand was asked about his player today, and this is what he told le10sport.com:
“Newcastle are very interested, they have made an offer. We will wait and see. But I will not sell players unless I can replace them.”
We’d be very surprised if this news is true, but Bong’s four year contract does run out in June, and he could presumably be brought to Newcastle for a nominal fee this month.
But a center-back is what we really need this month, and it’s interesting that Newcastle have been linked with Valenciennes 21 year-old French U21 center-back Nicolas Isimat-Mirin, over the last couple of months.
That’s the player we would have expected to possibly sign for Newcastle this month, and we find it hard to understand why Newcastle would be going after a left-back – although perhaps Bong can also play at center-back.
And maybe Newcastle are thinking of selling Davide Santon to some Italian club this summer, or simply increasing the competition for places across the back four, which would be good..
And the Newcastle manager has said the club are trying hard to bring in new defensive players this month:
” It’s a position that we really need to strengthen as we have let in some loose goals this year because we have not had the competition, and the likes of Davide Santon have needed a rest at times. That sort of pressure has told on us.”
“There is no doubt we are beavering away in the background to try to get players in.” “At the start of the window you get all sorts of mixed messages and it’s very difficult to cement somebody down to a decision, because they’re waiting to see if another club gets involved.”
“But it will accelerate as we get nearer the end of the window. The problem for us teams who perhaps need to strengthen is trying to get those decisions made.”
That’s a hint at a left back coming in to help out Davide Santon, but we’d be surprised if Newcastle have indeed bid for the 24 year-old, who joined Valenciennes from Metz in 2009, and he is a French citizen.
