Newcastle Still After England Center-Back

1:29 am, Thursday, January 10th, 2013 by Ed Harrison · 98 Comments

For some reason big Sam Allardyce always goes for the older players – even when they are past their best and it seems true today, as the West Ham manager is trying to get 35 year-old Sylvain Distin, the former Newcastle player to London.

james tomkins 999

James Tomkins – frustrated at lack of playing time this season

If West Ham get Distin, the conventional logic is they would let one of their top younger players – 23 year-old James Tomkins  – leave the club, since James isn’t getting too much playing time at the Hammers these days.

Whenever we’ve watched James play – either at center-back or defensive midfield – he’s always looked a solid young player, who we think could do a good job at Newcastle.

Newcastle were interested in James last January, but West Ham were unwilling to sell, but things could be different if they get Distin or another center-back into West Ham this month.

talkSPORT is reporting the England U21 International is unsettled and frustrated by his lack of first-team opportunities lately, and James may want a move away from the Hammers to get his career back on track.

One advantage with the 6’4″ Tomkins moving to Newcastle, is that he is a versatile player who could be used across the back four and in defensive midfield, and he’s a good footballer, who is also a good reader of the game for one so young.

We think Tomkins would be a great buy for Newcastle at around £4M, so we’ll keep a close eye on who West Ham manage to bring into the club over the next few weeks.

Comments welcome.

There are better defenders than Tomkins around the same price range. No thanks

  • 2 toon1707 // Jan 10, 2013 at 1:43 AM

I agree RVD if he can’t get a game at West Ham then why do we want him

  • 3 RonVanDam // Jan 10, 2013 at 1:57 AM

Few reasons why Pardew wants him and could convince MA to buy him are:
    He’s 23
    6ft 4
    cost 4m to get
Is English. Will have a high resell value in a few years once we’ve developed him

I still wouldnt buy him and would repeat myself – there are much better players out there for a similar fee

  • 4 RonVanDam // Jan 10, 2013 at 1:58 AM

Other reson would be: he’s versatile

  • 5 GAZ09 // Jan 10, 2013 at 2:01 AM

Would be a decent buy, much better than Williamson!

  • 6 jimmysmith // Jan 10, 2013 at 2:02 AM

    ‘Newcastle Still After England Center-Back”

First, we’re “unleashing” Adam Campbell to, I suppose, terrorise Premier league defences, and now this.

Ed, have you been giving it a nudge.

  • 7 santonthenewmaldini // Jan 10, 2013 at 2:05 AM

Well at the moment West Ham have one of the best defensive records in the league if we had their defense we would be in the top 6!!!!

As much as i would like to see us get a good ball playing centre half i think we also need a really big no nonsense centre half who will not get skinned and who will get stuck in as Colo is a bit of a fairy and Williamson is shite!

If we can get Tomkins for 5 million and maybe Pieters or Mbiwa for similar we would suddenly have a backline that would be solid and a threat from set pieces

I think Colo is maybe a bit fed up as there was rumours about the players having meetings for why we did not buy anyone in the summer (people in the know’s words not mine!)

He maybe thought that we would have a proper go for the Champions League and now realises it wont happen just cannot be bothered with another relegation battle

He may leave in the summer which would be sad as the last 2 seasons he has been brilliant

  • 8 Jamie McKellar // Jan 10, 2013 at 2:05 AM

cant see him joining us, but stranger things have happened

personally dont want him, but after seeing williamsons performances of late, of which i could do a better job, so Tomkins would be a welcome

  • 9 GAZ09 // Jan 10, 2013 at 2:07 AM

Anyone think we might be looking to sign players who would stick with us if we end up in the championship?

  • 10 Dagwoodz // Jan 10, 2013 at 2:09 AM

As much as Williamson has tried and given it his all, he’s just not the quality that we need in our back 4 on a consistent basis. Tomkins would be an upgrade to Williamson, so if he does come in, it’s a welcome addition.

  • 11 Jamie McKellar // Jan 10, 2013 at 2:14 AM

exactly Dagwoodz, not anything to shout about, but someone who could step up when needed if Colo or Saylor get injured or suspended again

  • 12 Kc-Toon // Jan 10, 2013 at 2:14 AM

Hopefully we can add a player with a bit of fight to jump into centre half. Tomkins for me, isnt what we need right now. Douglas would be my ideal signing, not too bad at playing the ball along the deck, aswell as a few crunching tackles, which i haven’t seen from a toon player for god knows how. Would love dede aswell, hopefully hes caught Carrs attention with him apparently monitering south america recently.

  • 13 Jamie McKellar // Jan 10, 2013 at 2:23 AM

anyone else want a CB with a bit of pace? annoying when you see players jog past them without breaking a sweat

  • 14 Robby Bobson // Jan 10, 2013 at 2:44 AM

Tomkins is solid, wouldnt mind him, less of a gamble than the likes of douglas.

Althogh he may be 35 and ditched us before but if Distin is availble he is exactly.what we nees..

  • 15 Robby Bobson // Jan 10, 2013 at 2:45 AM

*need…absolute beast, great in the air, experienced and pacey for his age.

  • 16 santonthenewmaldini // Jan 10, 2013 at 3:08 AM

    Is Tomkins quick???

  • 17 Newcastleforlife // Jan 10, 2013 at 4:27 AM

Younes Belhanda @ 10 million absolute bargain
Wilfred Bony also available at the same rate…

Why waste 9 million on Remy , if we can get one of the above at 10 million……

Sign one of the above players and play 4-2-3-1
and sign a good cb, and holding MF and a championship ST

  • 18 Indian Magpie // Jan 10, 2013 at 4:39 AM

hope we sign players who are ready, not young and upcoming.

Hope mick lowes is correct # once bitten twice shy

  • 19 Sir Erec // Jan 10, 2013 at 5:05 AM

Can’t say I have watched Tomkins too much recently, my last memory of him was of our 5-0 home win against West Ham two years back.

Leon Best absolutely dominated him and Tomkins just couldn’t seem to stop slipping around the pitch.

Hopefully he has improved dramatically as the player from that night should never be on our squad.

  • 20 NEWEXPATMAGPIE // Jan 10, 2013 at 5:42 AM

    @17:

Vitesse would not let Bony leave for 10Mil !

The time to get Boney would of ben a year and a half ago before he emerged as a major talent in Holland.

It is widely accepted that Boney will be moving end season but the names of Barca, Real Madrid, Bayern, Dortmond, AC and Inter Milan, PSG, and even Man Shitty are all Clubs who are lining up to bid for him!

I first pointed him out almost two years ago, back then Vitesse Arnhem wanted 1OMil for him!
If you think you can get him to come to us for 10Mil, then you not being Realistic!

As for Tomkins? Er No thanks! like someone said above, there are much better players out there for less!

  • 21 Dagwoodz // Jan 10, 2013 at 5:46 AM

    @EXPATMAGPIE

So you don’t rate Tomkins above Williamson? If he is above Williamson, I would say that’s an improvement on the squad.

  • 22 Sir Erec // Jan 10, 2013 at 5:55 AM

    Dagwoodz

While Tompkins is an improvement over Willo, at the 5mil fee quoted, we could get someone else who is comparatively a bigger step up than Tompkins is.

  • 23 AMEOBI // Jan 10, 2013 at 6:03 AM

English players always cost more money, still not noticed?

  • 24 Indian Magpie // Jan 10, 2013 at 6:07 AM

fet tomkins, sell them simmo and Gosling (pains me to say)

  • 25 davis_toons // Jan 10, 2013 at 6:39 AM

If he is a replacement for Rtylor or Perchy then be it . But if he is a replacement for Williamson, it could be a risk.

He have not played much football in Westham, what chances does he have here, its a risk.

Unless AP plays him like Obtan, until the BOOOssss start coming from the fans before stop playing him. That will even be worst for him.

Could be a good buy to replace Rtylor or some other player.

  • 26 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jan 10, 2013 at 6:43 AM

    Morning lads!

…about Tomkins, so the logic is he should come here and be #4 CB – why wouldn’t he just stay at W’Ham and be that?

  • 27 davis_toons // Jan 10, 2013 at 6:43 AM

A good way will be a LOAN to Buy contract. In that way we can test drive him and pick out the qualities he can offer and the talent he have.

A good defender will have some trails in them. Just like any other “England International”. (Stylor is a contender as well if he can stay fit)

  • 28 Sir Erec // Jan 10, 2013 at 6:48 AM

    Davis_toon

How could he be a replacement for Ryan Taylor or Perch? He doesn’t play the same position as either of them?

  • 29 AMEOBI // Jan 10, 2013 at 6:52 AM

    Davis,

What are you on replace Raylor or Perch? Did you watch Raylor last season? He’s a cracking player! Selling him will be a disaster

  • 30 Indian Magpie // Jan 10, 2013 at 6:56 AM

Ryan taylor is a cracking player. ROFL

  • 31 Dagwoodz // Jan 10, 2013 at 7:09 AM

how many homegrown players does the club have to have to remain within FA guidelines again?

  • 32 BigBen // Jan 10, 2013 at 7:11 AM

Tomkins is ropey! Just a younger Williamson. Need a CB challenging Taylor & Collo for 1st team.

  • 33 AMEOBI // Jan 10, 2013 at 7:13 AM

    Indian Magpie,

What’s so funny? Have you played football before? You’ll know Raylor gives his all every game. Gets played out of position, naturally RM not LB.
Some other blogger who doesn’t have a clue.

  • 34 Indian Magpie // Jan 10, 2013 at 7:17 AM

    Ameobi

I am not saying he is a bad player, just not a cracking player. Yes i have played footbll at the lowest level.

Every football player should be able to play in ever position. That’s wht i think any way

  • 35 AMEOBI // Jan 10, 2013 at 7:21 AM

    Indian,

You’re a mile of there like seriously. As you can tell I rate him very highly.. Favourite player by a clear mile

  • 36 Ian Toon // Jan 10, 2013 at 7:22 AM

Jesper- Good Morning . When thinking of Tomkins it’s sometimes hard to forget his disasterous showing in a 5-0 trouncing of West Ham . Best in scoring a hat trick took him to the cleaners. He’s much improved and worth considering because he is versatile and better than a number of our current squad players like Williamson and Perch. Allardyce did not want him to participate in Olympic squad and he claimed he was not as fit as a result. He would be a good signing but only in addition to another named signing CB. He would get a lot more games and a chance to push his England claims . Also there is a mutual respect with Pardew. My brother was right in saying a while ago that he would not want to move north but feels he is not enamoured with Allardyce and would jump at the chance to move on.

  • 37 JackButler // Jan 10, 2013 at 7:25 AM

If Tomkins is the height of our ambition then we may as well all pack up now and go home.

Toby Alderweireld, Sakho or someone of this standard is what we have been crying out for for years.

We’ve wasted millions on millions in every other areas of the field but have constructed our defense on pitence for years with the same results.

WE CAN NOT BLOODY DEFEND TO SAVE OUR LIVES

  • 38 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jan 10, 2013 at 7:26 AM

Morning Ian…would think a kid like him with and International career infront of him would want to be more than #4 choice CB at the Toon :-)

…I know absolute nothing about him so I’ll yout word for it (remember you still owe me for my birthday) lol

  • 39 Ian Toon // Jan 10, 2013 at 7:27 AM

Davis- Every signing is a risk! You’ve got to back your judgement of a player. Tomkins would hit the ground running and @ £ 4 million maximum would be a good signing.

  • 40 Ian Toon // Jan 10, 2013 at 7:33 AM

Jesper- There is the English premium. However if Allardyce wants Distin he will need to get Tomkins out of the door. My brother knows him and funnily enough often sees him in a local Costa coffee shop with Mark Noble. He’s a bit brash and cocky but we would soon sort him out. The major problem has been lack of defensive cover and he would be a big improvement on a number who have worn the shirt this season.

  • 41 Ian Toon // Jan 10, 2013 at 7:36 AM

Jesper – I am having to go. What happened to the morning idioms?

  • 42 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jan 10, 2013 at 7:37 AM

Ian…we will have to see what happens this January (it’s hard to tell what’s really going on behind the scene)

  • 43 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 10, 2013 at 7:40 AM

Where are people getting £4 million from? West ham wanted 5-6 mil when they were in the championship and he’s signed a new contract since then!

  • 44 Ian Toon // Jan 10, 2013 at 7:43 AM

Jesper- You can see from the negative comments that not everyone agrees with me. Probably the same people who comment on our own young players without actually having seen them. My bro is a good judge of a player and when not home or watching us in London and south has taken in some hammer games.

  • 45 SameOld.... // Jan 10, 2013 at 7:45 AM

I see Joey Barton tweeted this about Remy.

@Joey7Barton: @JackRedshaw think he’s decided to stay put mate. Were all happy as he’s a big player for us and were trying to win the league…

  • 46 JackButler // Jan 10, 2013 at 7:46 AM

Tomkins is no better than Willo, Perch or Saylor, I thought we were trying to improve our team/squad not just add another average player to it???

We’re a third of the way through the transfer window and we’ve signed 1 out of the 4 or 5 players we need.

  • 52 WWYCD // Jan 10, 2013 at 7:52 AM

I quite like this lad but if we got him in surely Perch would be the obvious choice to be flogged and Pards rates him highly (for some reason)

I’d do it personally but we’d still need another CB is as well

  • 53 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 10, 2013 at 7:52 AM

    Ian toon
Aye would make sense seeing as west are one of the clubs apparantly intrested in him!
Might aswell use him as a part fee instead of losing him on a free transfer and i’d imagine he’d want out now he’s not a garunteed starter anymore

Bit harsh imo Tomkins is better than Perch and Williamson whilst being a lot younger if we got him he’d pplay ahead of them both and Saylor can’t stay fit for longer than 2 months so he’s not much competition either

  • 56 Tsunki // Jan 10, 2013 at 8:01 AM

Mate I just don’t think he’s the type of player that’ll make the improvement we need. He’s not the worst player in the world by any means but when you look at the level of players that Carr has brought us for relatively little money, surely there are better players out there other than this lad?

  • 59 JackButler // Jan 10, 2013 at 8:04 AM

As first choice CB I agree he’s not the best option but as back-up/future starter he’s a great option and 4mill for that is nothing (specially for a English lad) in the grand scheme of things considering we have no depth

We need more than just him I agree

every time I’ve seen tomkins, he has an error in him. Really hope if pardew is in his death throes he doesn’t saddle us with Tomkins as a leaving present when there are so many better choices:- M’Biwa, sakho, Mirin, Alderwield for similar money

west ham have a good defensive record but tomkins isn’t a regular

  • 63 Rotonda heights // Jan 10, 2013 at 8:13 AM

why does sissoko need to sign a pre – contract when the window’s open, unless he’s not coming till the summer, by which time god knows which division we could be in.

  • 64 Sir Braveheart // Jan 10, 2013 at 8:15 AM

Id take Tomkins over Williamson. Swap Simmo and 2m for Tomkins? Id go for that.

Would want someone more authoritive as a starter though. Tomkins isnt the answer to the CB question.

  • 65 JackButler // Jan 10, 2013 at 8:17 AM

    WWYCD

As a squad player then maybe he’d do a job for us, but I can’t see Ashley stumping up the cash for two center halfs.

At this point in time we need someone who’s a proven player who can partner Colo as Willo is simply poor, Perch is a jack of all trades but a master on none and Saylor is more or less a right off with his injuries.

I’m just sick and tired of my club being a joke defensively. It’s been an issue forever and it’s time we got it right

  • 66 Rotonda heights // Jan 10, 2013 at 8:18 AM

Fat lad will invest if he sniffs a profit and a gamble at this stage is very bad business…Tomkins will bring a profit but signing him alone would be a gamble

But in all honesty this is just a case of 2+2=5 we probably have no interest anymore but he is a possible target whereas would other names branded about want to come to our relegation battling unstable club? Sakho, Mbiwa and Alderwield want to move to a club they have limited knowledge off and represent a pretty big step down from where they are right now?

I’m not convinced about the strength of the rumour about Sissoko signing a pre contract agreement.
It would have to be wholly dependant on which division we will be in.
I cannot see a player commiting to such an agreement when the clubs standing is in the balance. Because of this I think it is wild speculation.

  • 82 davybtoon // Jan 10, 2013 at 8:35 AM

If we can get sissohko to sign pre contract now we could force Toulouse to sell for next to nothing in this window bcoz they wouldn’t b able to start a bidding war

N am I the only person who wouldn’t b arsed if colo left aslong as we got quality in ie sahko mbwia

  • 83 BelfastMagpie // Jan 10, 2013 at 8:37 AM

“We missed the boat in the summer. We cannot afford to miss the boat again in the next window, even if its a more expensive boat” – Alan Pardew

They know they messed up and are determined to put it right. How about we stop criticising what they did or didnt do in the summer and judge them on what they’re doing now? Or does that go against the general doom and gloom atmosphere that prevails on this site?

  • 88 Transfer Sage // Jan 10, 2013 at 8:43 AM

    WWYCD

I know he will chat with Remy and will know how things currently stand.

My point was that I’m sure Barton, Remy and even Marseille don’t know if a new club or a current club linked decide to bid an acceptable price and they encourage him to leave.

Not saying Barton isn’t right as of today…but it can change quickly.

I don’t think we can afford to wait until the window is closed to improve the squad. We should get players in as soon as possible.
We have 3 winnable games up to the close of the window. We have one in which will improve us for Saturday cannot see anymore coming in before Saturday. It would be nice if we had a couple more in before the Reading game.

He’s better than wilo, but we can get better centre backs for the same or less money. So will we see a signing this week? Looks unlikely

    Sir Bravheart

I’m willing to judge the club at the end of Jan on transfers…even though we may be pushing hard you can only go as fast as other clubs do….they may just be taking a lot of time to sort deals and want their own plans in place first.

They failed in the summer which is costing us now but go to move on…if they fail in Jan then stick the boot in like some are saying…but just be patient.

I know we have important games this month and the sooner we get players in the better but I expect 2-3 more and am confident in that.

True mate but I think Barton said he thought Remy had decided to stay so he didn’t give a definitive answer just what he thinks from talking to him…but realisitcally I would tend to agree I don’t think Remy wants a Newcastle move if we had agreed a fee like QPR did (apparently) I think he would turn us down just like he did them

Taken too long imo just hope he is a smokescreen though again I higily doubt that considering our summer dealings

I have no idea what remy would want really. I think we are an attractive option even without my black and white glasses on. We may be in a predicament now but we won’t go down, not that we are too good to go down, just teams like reading, qpr, villa and wigan are a lot worse than us.

I honestly believe Pardew has let us down in some games being negative but injuries haven’t helped. Good players back like cabaye and ben arfa and hopefully a couple more additions and then we should finish 10th…thats my prediction anyway

I’d love to be able to agree but last time we went down we had a squad that shouldn’t of been in the basement and clubs were worse than us in the league

We are attractive if we can convince players we aren’t going down and are building something but we seem to be struggling to do that with the players already under contract this season

Personally I think Mick Lowes’ comments were a load of twaddle. He obviously believed in what he was saying, but I think all Newcastle are doing is the football equivalent of window shopping.
Having a look at what’s on offer without any real intention of buying. If they see anything the really like and can afford they may be tempted but unlikely.
They will then tell anyone who is prepared to listen about how many bargains they nearly got, but they weren’t quite right.

James Tomkins is really not a bad player, at least he is better than williamson. Go on and buy him , as well as a forward .

  • 97 Sav // Jan 11, 2013 at 12:04 AM

Tomkins? Have you been smoking the auld bong, Ed?

It always worries me when one of our targets is described as ‘versatile’. It basically means they aren’t exceptional in their main position. Go get Joleon Lescott he’s not versatile as a defensive midfielder although he’s a bloody good defender who can chip in with a few goals.

Anyone else now very worried about Collo. If he goes we are screwed.

Sign some quality Ashley you tight bar steward or we are going down!
