Newcastle Move Closer To Signing Top Young Defender

talkSPORT is reporting today that talks are ongoing between Newcastle United  and West Ham, about the possible transfer of 23 year-old England U21 International James Tomkins to the Magpies.

James Tomkins – capped 10 times for the England U21 side

Certainly Newcastle were interested in the center-back come defensive midfielder last January, and we see no reason why Newcastle’s interest will have waned since then.

When we’ve watched the player he’s always looked a solid player,  who still has room for improvement and he would be good buy for Newcastle.

But there’s surely no way West Ham will let the player leave in January, until and unless they can get another center-back into Upton Park before the end of the month.

But with the news today that Fabricio Coloccini wants to immediately go back home to Argentina for personal reasons, it would not be surprising if Newcastle try to bring in one or maybe even two center-backs to the club this month.

The problem with James is that he does not have an awful  lot of pace, but we still think he would be a decent acquisition for Newcastle, at the right price, and he’s certainly a big strong lad at 6’4″ tall.

James has played twice for the Great Britain side and 10 times for the England U21 team, and he’s been at West Ham all his career and played 131 times with 7 goals for the Hammers.

We hope this story has some truth to  it, and if we cannot get James in during January, then maybe he join us in the summer.

What do you think?

Of course I’d have him and it’s a good squad addition but I don’t think this is the player we need as a starting centre half to partner Colo – assuming he stays.

I hope the ‘1 in 1 out’ policy doesn’t continue, if we sign Tomkins and Colo departs I’ll be distraught. Tomkins/Willo is not a partnership I’d like to see.

I feel Tomkins would be a good squad player, more of a Williamson replacement than a Coloccini.

We need a top centre back in, we have done for a couple of years now.

(according to some reports on Twitter Moussa Sissoko’s agent is on tyneside-believe what you will)

Brilliant, do not rate him at all. If these are our targets we may aswell give up now. Extremely disappointed nothing has been done this week, but that’s us.
It’s been a very depressing week, again talk of implosion with colo etc. we really are a joke of a club.

Solid player. Definitely an upgrade on Williamson. If Colo leaves then I don’t think that Tomkins is his replacement, I think that another CB will come in on top of that. Wouldn’t want a Douglas and Tomkins partnership as they both lack pace. But an M’biwa/Tomkins or Sakho/Tomkins or Alderweireld/Tomkins partnership would be very decent. I actually rate this guy, not a world beater, but a solid young CB with premier league experience. Think he’d be a cracking buy.

Has anyone actually watched him play? Remember everyone thought lescott was cack till he went to Everton and got a big money move to man city, Tomkins is in the same mould, comments only if you’ve seen him play, because I’m telling you now he’s better than Williamson!!! And he’s English!!!!! He’ll cost a fortune when sold on…. Providing the story isn’t bull

We have to have at least 8 “homegrown” players under PL rules over 21 named in the squad for next season.
We have Elliot Saylor Raylor Perch Gosling Ameobi Willo Harper and Simpson. Simmo and Harper are likely to go which leaves 7
Tav Fergie Dummet Inman Newton and Ranger are all 22 this year so if we want to play them they have to be named in the squad. That makes 12.
Looking at that list there is a clear gap in quality between the foreign players and the homegrown. How many do you think we should keep and are there homegrown players out there you think are good enough to improve the squad. I really have not taken enough interest in Tomkins to have an informed opinion.

Let’s face it, its all bollox what rumor has been true as yet?

We may have no idea who will sign until we see them in their shirt holding up a scarf.

It may all be under control and everything on schedule to land our priority targets who ae all great or..

It might be a s#$% show where no one wants to join a club is trouble and the club are incompetently chasing overpriced, unproven losers.

Or it could be anywhere in between. Who knows?

Colo’s bit Skirt up in Cramlington has a hell ov a 70’s welcome mat…I told her to get a Brazilian ..She said ” I prefer Argentinian’s”

Well Lad’s it seems like we are going to loose a
£10 million quid player ..and was it all because he was thinking with his tadger ?

If it was mind I would have no F**ing sympathy with him and make him play out his contract ..He’s on Loads of money ..And we should not give him away because of his own mistake ..

Iv got no Sympathy whatsoever if he has brought this all on himself ..Its not Newcastle United’s fault if he cant keep his Tadger in his Pants…supposing this is the case ..which it might not be.

Saying all that ..we all like a bit of Skirt lad’s eh?….

He is better than willo. Get him in and one more. If Collo goes we need another but I hope he can tough it out until the summer.

On Pards comments earlier. Why do we have to wait for the player to decide if he wishes to join us. We are Newcastle united move onto a player that wants to play for us. There are hundreds out there.

If Collo is away then we need a technically gifted pacy ball playing cb paired with a solid stable old school cb (as saylor last season when fit). Tomkins would be a reasonable stand in for saylor but definately a mbiwa/Rio type cb is needed.

A return to last seasons tactical set up or barca type play and we’ll be the entertainers once again.

Another point is that he wins everything in the air in both boxes..something we really lack. Would need a classier CB next to him though.

It seems to be forgetten bobby robson had andy o’brien and andy griffin in the champions league and they werent fancy or pacy players….

    Good comment, that makes sense.

The club have to realise, to put it simply, Colo is a top player, Williamson isn’t good enough and Taylor is too unreliable.

If Colo does leave I’m honestly very pessimistic at our chances of bringing TWO centre backs in. Obviously we’d need that, we – the fans – know this. But will the management do this? I highly doubt it.

I try to be as realistic as possible, this isn’t necessarily pessimism, it’s just what I’ve come to expect from the club.

Hopefully we get a result at Norwich tomorrow, we need something to lighten the mood!
