Why Waste £4M On Goalkeeper Jack Butland?

10:48 am, Tuesday, January 15th, 2013 by Ed Harrison · 744 Comments

News today that Newcastle are eyeing a move for Birmingham City goalkeeper Jack Butland, who at 19 is one England’s most promising goalkeepers, and of course he represented Great Britain in the London Olympics last summer.

jack butland

Jack Butland – a Newcastle target in January

And since Steve Harper will be leaving the club when his contact expires at the end of June, we need another goalkeeper coming in – but spending £4M on one in January, doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense to us.

Goalkeeper is not a weakness in the side through the end of the season, although Tim Krul has not shown the excellent form he was in last season, and surely Newcastle should be bringing in a striker and some defenders and also a creative central midfielder in the short time left in January?

Jack stands 6′ 5″ tall and would give good competition to Dutch International Tim Krul, but we hardly need to spend time trying to get  another goalkeeper in, when other positions in the side are so lacking in competition.

Of course Jack is a perfect recruit for Newcastle, and it seems Birmingham City need the money and will sell the Great Britain goalkeeper this month – so if Newcastle really want him – we suppose they will go after him now – although they will face competition from some bigger clubs.

Butland has made 27 league appearances for Birmingham, and 24 appearances on loan at Cheltenham over the last couple of years, and we’d be very surprised if big Jack arrives at Newcastle this month – but there again – we’ve been wrong before. :D

If Mike have the money to spend (it is still an investment) I couldn’t care less…

…if it won’t have an impact on our transfer chest then who cares really? (it won’t move our wage cap one way or the other)

  • 2 Shot Bru // Jan 15, 2013 at 10:51 AM

Maybe we have had an offer for Krul.

  • 3 Edd Case // Jan 15, 2013 at 10:52 AM

Pie in the sky stuff this one.

There is NO WAY we are after him.

  • 4 Wayayman // Jan 15, 2013 at 10:52 AM

Jeezzzzzz, does this mean Krul is going? I guess Butland has experience at Championship level. He might need it if this transfer window pans out like every other one under Ashley.

  • 5 Tsunki // Jan 15, 2013 at 10:52 AM

Why? Unless we can field 2 GK’s I think we should be going for CB’s dammit!

  • 6 nightfa11 // Jan 15, 2013 at 10:52 AM

    remy thing repost:

    qpr:
    1. have a way better manager
    2. willing to spend way more money..especially if they stay up
    3. are in form (beat chelsea, drew against spurs)
    4. way higher wage
    5. release clause in case they go down
    6. mbia, possibly mvilla

    nufc:
    1. cabaye, debuchy, hatem
    2. way bigger fan base

whod you choose if u werent a fan of nufc?

  • 7 BenbulbenMag // Jan 15, 2013 at 10:52 AM

I’d sign him if the money were coming from the “development” kitty and not the “emergency let’s get the transfers we should have gotten in the summer” kitty ;)

  • 8 nick_9 // Jan 15, 2013 at 10:52 AM

4 mill on a position we have enough cover in? Not a chance. If Remy goes to QPR the real test of the club will be if try have backup options an if they can get them done quick enough. They’re so tough at negotiating it drags it out.

Remy and m’villa in a 15 million spend for qpr!
A well known bad boy and an out of form striker who wanted to quit not so long ago, risky business for a side needing instant results. Also added about 6 million on QPR’s wage bill in two signings, typical redknapp really.

  • 9 Toon-Prodigy // Jan 15, 2013 at 10:52 AM

I find this story almost comical considering the current predicament.

We may well be in for him, there is nothing wrong with planning for the future. But I do hope NUFC are prioritising.

Has this got the hall marks of a typical Toon window…so much promise, so much positive noise and then nothing…………..
Talk is cheap and action is where it is!

Btw don’t agree ’bout Proud as he stated bout Remy last night as fact that he has signed and assigned a shirt no. I stupidly believed what I was told…….foolish me :(

Btw can Butland play up front…..thought not!

Bru…I don’ so, but Harps will be leaving and lets face it you need more than one really good keeper (Elliott will never be that)

qpr are in better form maybe by results but they have been lucky, especially against chelsea! you watch they will go down!

Nufc have been unfortunate to lose some games recently

  • 16 Tsunki // Jan 15, 2013 at 10:55 AM

oh and chances of being considered for the national team.

  • 17 Wayayman // Jan 15, 2013 at 10:55 AM

I have to say, this whole depression that occurred last night around the Remy deal was started by Barton. I just hope the clown was on a wind up, there’s no news either way as yet which menas that the agents are stringing us all along. I want players like Debuchy who actually WANT to come play for us not mercenaries like Ba who follow the biggest wad of cash. If Remy is like Ba, he can go and swivel. Onwards and upwards. I hope…

  • 18 Carl92 // Jan 15, 2013 at 10:55 AM

We had Fraser Forster one of the best young keepers in the game. Then sold him to Celtic, to then now be looking at another top young English keeper that we have to pay for?! Surely not?

  • 19 TorqToon // Jan 15, 2013 at 10:56 AM

Spread – All I am saying with regards proud is – lets wait for the official confirmation first! No reliable sources have confirmed anything. Lets wait for that before deconstructing what went before.

  • 20 Robby Bobson // Jan 15, 2013 at 10:56 AM

Its not only opposite of what we need he really isnt that good.

Hes just one of the players hyped up without doing anything…he got his england call up with the highest team he played for was cheltnam.

Im from just outside birmingham and i often go st andrews with my mate when i dont go st james and he really isnt that good at all…prone to errors, hes just tall.

  • 21 nick_9 // Jan 15, 2013 at 10:56 AM

Nightfall you forgot European football for us and London for qpr. He may very well have a buy out clause but if he plays in the premier league half hearted he won’t stand much of a chance and what’s to say someone will
Take the chance in the summer if he is a free agent? He certainly won’t be on mega money if he does rubbish for qpr.

I thought he was a risky signing for us based on what I’d heard about him wanting to quit and been a party boy but for qpr to sign him they’re in ever more of a mess

  • 22 Transfer Sage // Jan 15, 2013 at 10:56 AM

This is a non-starter for me.

Butland said he will only leave for first team football.

There has been nothing to say krul is going anywhere so can’t see krul being benched.

  • 27 gfp13 // Jan 15, 2013 at 11:01 AM

Like someone said earlier… If the 4mil doesn’t effect our budget for other positions then get him. I’d probably strike a deal so he stays at Birmingham until next season. Get him a few more games and then take it from there next season. Haven’t seen much of the lad except for team gb and he seemed good then and I’ve heard great things but I don’t see any truth in this unless krul is to be sold

  • 28 nickybutttt // Jan 15, 2013 at 11:01 AM

just long terms view. read that article again, you know, club is moving on the next striker target, after remy deal was hijacked, i think this link is not plan to overcome this window, we should understand just, that are interested in young goalkeep, that’s all

  • 29 nimo // Jan 15, 2013 at 11:01 AM

forster is a great shot stopper but that’s where it ends.. krul is a lot better all round.. dont know why people moan about his sale its all the club could do

  • 30 Tsunki // Jan 15, 2013 at 11:03 AM

I wouldnt necessarily put London in the QPR column, its no real commute these days, the Toon has a lot to offer, and the airport is quieter and has Air France and KLM flights to Paris daily. Are you reading this, Loic?

On a side note, I still chuckle when i recall the mackems Olympic Stadium suitability bid – they said they had a handy Airport ha ha which one was that then, Peterlee International :)

Tbf good point….I just lost it last night when BBC confirmed that Remy never even came to Newcastle…..

ok…euro league.. but knowing pardew he wont go all in..especially cos were fighting against relegation..

but theres another plus for qpr..

if a player will want to leave the club, their owner wont put a 40 mio price tag on him..

  • 36 Raffo // Jan 15, 2013 at 11:06 AM

I say go for it. Krul has no competition. Harps is finished and Eliot isnt any good. Krul needs competition as does Collo and all the top names. Tiote has performed badly but hasnt really had any pressure put on him, esp with Cabayes injury.

If Remy goes elsewhere then fine. I like the bit about them challenging for the title next year. I nearly wet myself.

Give Ashley the window. I have faith, blind maybe, but faith it is. If we have nothing to show after it then we can start the campaigns again

Krul is the more riunded keeper so I think we made the right choice!

What a stupid, stupid artcile to bring out today in the Chronicle!

WHo honestly gives a flying f*** about us bringing in a back-up keeper right now?

Could not care less and again I think its Lee Ryder trying to divert attention from some truly pathetic “reporting” lately.

You should have heard the clown talking to TALKSPORT last night.-he was even quoting stuff that BBC Talksport’s Mick Lowes had said a few days earlier as his own thoughts.

How Ryder has that job is anyone’s guess-frickin’ joke!

I can’t believe you guys aren’t excited by the possible signing of Siem de Jong??? This lad is immense! What have we been lacking this season? … Creativity, being able to link the midfield up with the stirkers, we have NOTHING in the final third… This is the man to turn us around ! Imagine him alongside benny and cabaye ? Immense! I believe we need…
    CB – Alderweireld (double swoop?)
    DM – Sissisko
    AM – Siem de Jong
    Striker/LM/RM/AM – Wijnaldum
    Striker – Doumbia

All these players would cost the best part of 30m but it wud improve our team by ten folds…

Sadly, Newcastle will always loose out to foreign players who’s heads are turned by London clubs. I’ve lived in London 20 years now, and was 21 when I left Byker (and still come home a lot, not least for games) so I know both places well. If I wanted to impress a visitor to Newcastle, I could do it easily because I love the area, the club and I know the best parts of it to show off.
Sadly, we have a bloke doing the ‘selling’ who doesnt know or love our club or the North East and couldn’t sell a fish to a blind lesbian.

  • 53 Slank // Jan 15, 2013 at 11:14 AM

Sounds like Butland’s agent at work here. He must be short of a few bob and needs replenishing his bank balance.

If there is one area we are blessed with, it is in the keeper department.

Maybe the reason people are refrained is because its NUFC and nothing’s sealed until the black and white shirt has been put on.

You are absolutely right about London. It is the worlds greatest city.

It is also now classed as the 5th most French populated city. For all the French residents in London they are now going to have heir own deputy (French MP) because there are so many of them.

People living in Newcastle should not underestimate the pull of London to French men and women especially those who earn a lot and don’t like the French tax system under the current French President.

All I know is the later in the window it gets the more games these ‘signings’ will have missed an the less likely we are to sign the players needed. Might not be true but I just feel the longer it is left to sign players we will have other players coming back and might not bother with signing a cb for example. If anything the disappointment in not signing Remy might p1ss Pards off to the point he goes and sees Ashley to speed things up.

  • 67 Tsunki // Jan 15, 2013 at 11:19 AM

wayayman – hmm. I can see that, I really can. I would have hoped Remy’s French connection would have helped with the selling too, especially when it comes to personal development and his own long-term value. Sadly for him it is very possible that a year (or two) of high wages may end with him in the international doldrums and a cut-price tag round his neck. I like to think if he came here and joined this ‘project’ t would have been the better long-term option. but thats me and I couldnt hit a barn door with a banjo, figuratively speaking.

  • 68 Novocastrians // Jan 15, 2013 at 11:20 AM

So now we need a goalie maybe we are going to play with two goalies on the pitch we are going to need two if we dont get in at least one more defender, we are near the bottom of the league and the last 10 games Pardew’s blamed injuries, thats part of football if i remember rightly, Williamson is so far off the pace and Colo’s on his way out the door doesn’t take a mastermind to work out we are in the shiite, and that’s with Demba in the team so whats the plan Alan ? Looks like we need about 4-5 players through the door better get their skates on !

Ahamada is better than Butland – and cheaper I would say.

for me none of our players have got any better under pardew, infact i think players have gone backwards under him,
we got into europe how many games did our top players play in that competition under pardew?
so how would it be better for him to come to a team beacause he has a few french players here?

i wont leave the blog because he stays or goes, if we stay up or go down,,, i may argue with a lot of other blogger on here , but i do like the crack on here,,

i think a lot of blogger have some of the same views as i have,
where we differ is how much time ppl would give pardew

but things like playing jonas,, i think most would not have him in the team
playing cisse and BA , i would not have done that
    even simpson, we had options

williamson, we have no real other option, so i understand why he has to play

pardew will not last 8 years, not on the football he plays, and if he does, then i feel sorry for all the fans

Not as good as the previous cover – Forster – but twice the price. Yeah, very sensible business. And remind ourselves, why did Forster leave again …?

So why buy 1st team players with international ambitions if you want them to sit on the bench? Perhaps just to make a speculative £2m profit next year. Crazy talk, as ever.

Put a half a million a year wage cap on the worldwide game, bring back (safe) terraces, cut the admission prices, boycott Sky TV and let’s get back to enjoying the football, not the endless wheelering & dealering.

Anyone see the quotes from ben arfa doing the rounds last night? Well they were only half quoted, the full quotes are below, and makes alot better reading…all his quotes below from a french journalist.

“At the end of the season there’ll be talks with the president and the coach, if there’s ambition then why not stay… but if there’s no ambition then I’d prefer to leave and compete for trophies.

But if there’s ambition at #nufc and they sign players, then why not stay?”

For now what #nufc are doing is ambitious (in terms of signings). They should have done it earlier and we’ve spoken about that. There are still a lot of positions in which #nufc need re-infircements.

I really love #nufc. It’s the only club that’s given me this responsibility, this love. I feel really loved by the fans.”

But I’m abitious and I want to win trophies. I won trophies at #OL and #OM. That’s why I said if there’s no ambition then I’ll leave

My best position is number 10. At #nufc I play on the right but with a lot of freedom. #Debuchy will create space for me.

There was contact with Chelsea and Arsenal last summer but it didn’t happen because I wanted to stay at #nufc. I’m still in contact with certain clubs in England today.

Chelsea? Yes. Arsenal? Yes. Liverpool? Yes. “Today those clubs are better than #nufc. But if we sign players we can catch up with them”

Does anybody know anything of a club rep from NUFC going to Spain? Don’t want to start mentioning names and getting hopes up of its a non starter?

  • 111 Wayayman // Jan 15, 2013 at 11:41 AM

Tsunki- I think with the difference in wages being considerable, only having a definite link or an affinity with the people already at the club would make a difference (like Debuchy has with Cabaye)
Honestly, if Remy has been shown around London and offered 20K+ per week more than we offered, then he’s never going to come to us. Add in a relegation clause that means he gets yet another signing on fee when he moves again in the summer, and we have little chance.

Anyway, I’ve moved on. He’s dead to me (waves arm in the air and clicks fingers like Beyonce)

The one I think is pie in the sky is Iker muniain as we met with Bilbao and the other, probably most realistic, but new ‘target’ as far as I’m aware is Adil Rami of Valencia.

The former would be far too expensive in my opinion but Rami may well have legs given the French connection and the financial state of the selling club.

  • 116 Thump // Jan 15, 2013 at 11:45 AM

  • 125 SuperShearer // Jan 15, 2013 at 11:49 AM

If QPR are offering Remy a deal with loads of money and a free release clause if they get relegated it’s a no brainer. He gets a socking big signing on fee, high wages and then gets to leave on a free having put himself in the shop window ANOTHER big signing on fee and even higher wages. It’s a worrying way football is going with yet MORE player power. I’ve said from the get go I prefer the look of PEA, raw pace, better runs off the ball and three years younger.

Doubt this is true. If it is then Krul must be off or definately will be, this is why I doubt it so much. Butland is good enough to be a first choice GK in most prem sides. Besides Elliot has shown his worth. I also had the pleasure of playing many times against Jack Alnwick for about 8 years or so ever since we were 9ish, he has been an oustanding GK from very young, can only see him getting better. Also I know nothing about Solderburg, do we still have him? Always heard he was very promising.

So to sum up, can only see Butland coming in as a replacement to Krul, which I highly doubt.

The one thing that makes me sad about NUFC more than all the other things is the fact that for a measly £25 million we could turn our team into a top 4/title threat.

Other teams spend that amount of dough on 1 player but we could buy about 5 and that would give us all we need.
Why do the powers that be not invest that?

If I had £100 in the bank and someone asked me to lend them a tenner with a guaranteed return I’d lend it them. Why Ashley doesn’t just add a little onto the interest free loan and take it back in the future is beyond my realm of thinking.

£25 million could get you Mertens, Alderwiereld, Mirin, Sissoko and Bong.

I am continuosly left baffled by Ashley and co, yet everytime the window rolls round I think ‘maybe this time’. More fool me.

I think there is a plausible chance we will sign nobody else this window and that all this Remy talk is bullshit as the owner knew QPR would come in for him. There is no way a football club would be naive enough to think that once they had bid the other suitors would come in. It was then down to NUFC to sell the club as a better alternative to the others, which we have either failed to do or not done at all.

Don’t get me wrong, I think we may sign someone, but history has taught me not to be positive or negative, just realistic. And realistically I don’t trust anyone at NUFC, or anyone on this blog, anyone…ANYONE.

  • 182 JARRAMAG // Jan 15, 2013 at 12:18 PM

The only reason we would look at another keeper is if we are going to sell Krull and i think Ashley would if offered enough even in our perilous position

They better get their skates on because without at least 1 striker,1 centre half and a creative midfielder signed we will be relegated

Mr Carr is doing a great job identifying players but we will always be scuppered by the likes of rubber face due to offering lower wages.£55k a week for an international striker is not the going rate you have to pay realistic rates eg £70-80k per week

All clubs, even the better managed ones, outside of barca and real are struggling and looking to sell.

They will need to spend to replace llorente as he leaves on a free.

Beattie buying players is not the same as picking a can of baked beans at the supermarket. You make it sound so easy. There is no garuntee you could pick those players up at that price and even less that they would want to come. The Remy deal should show just how difficukt it is to get the players you want even after a fee was agreed.

Stranger things have happened than us signing munain but I won’t get my hopes up

  • 196 Tinman // Jan 15, 2013 at 12:24 PM

    Agree Beattie mate.
Ben Arfa is world class flair, Cabaye is world class in the engine room, Krul can be world class keeper with a few tweaks and Cisse provided service is a world class goalscorer. Santon and Debuchy could be world class wingbacks, but one is still developing and we dont know enough about the other one yet.

But where we do lack is the rest of the XI, neither Collo, Willo or Staylor are good enough imo. We have no pace. We dont have a real LW. We have no back up strikers. Perch and Gutti work hard but disrupt our own play as much as the oppositions (reason why we are constantly in terrible games this season where both teams are as bad as each other).

We need at least another 5 Anita standard players in the positions where we lack cover if we want to challenge for top 4. And if we want to challenge for Title we need all those players and at least another 5 World class players.

Current board and regime I doubt either will happen tbh. No reason why if we invest 25m we cant be a STABLE top 6 side

  • 200 Tinman // Jan 15, 2013 at 12:30 PM

The problem with bringing in 4 or 5 players is you can only expect 1 or 2 of those to be good for first XI straight away. 1 or 2 to be good after a season or so and 1 or 2 to be total flops. Like Tequila says its not that easy in a short period. Look at how many seasons it took Man City before their investments paid off

My meds are wearing off but that doesn’t excuse the garbage you just wrote.

It isn’t hard to sing players, our transfer system makes it difficult.

Other teams can bid and sign a player in hours.

It takes us days, weeks, moths and years.

It’s like wanting to buy baked beans but only those that can have at least a 4 year sell by date, are 500g or less, are available in Asda only, are in sauce made using Spanish tomaotes only, have 1% salt content, and are cheaper han heinz.

Also once we have identified the beans we should wait until the market fluctuates so that we can get the best possible deal and pay 2p less for them, even if it means waiting a year.

FCUKKKKK MEEEEEE!!!! Just buy some fcuking beans!!!!!

  • 205 nick_9 // Jan 15, 2013 at 12:34 PM

Tequila Beattie does have a point though, I don’t necessarily thinks its the choosing of a player that’s the issue it’s the getting them over the line part. Debuchy was lines up last summer and Remy has no doubt been a target for a while. The club have had ages to scout a cb and have known about Ba’s release clause for the duration he was here. I’ll wait impatiently but if we cannot sign a cb and a st in 30 days then its ludicrous

  • 206 tequilamag // Jan 15, 2013 at 12:36 PM

Transfer Sage – What I meant by World Class there is that he’ll probably end up in Barcelona or Real Madrid soon he’s that good for his age. Cabaye is older and world class but not on his level. HBA is world class and in the same level as Munian but he seems to have his head turned also going by his recent comments praising Liverpool and the like. These are very hard times for us Newcastle fans. With all the excitement from last season, Ashley being the tight arse that he is has really ruined what could have been a remarkable season had he signed in the summer when we had good momentum. Now we are spiraling down that every player is rightfully questioning our ambition and it’s sad, very very sad.

We need to remain patient, the fact Pards has not been on stating Saylor and Benny coming back soon will be like new signings tells us something must be happening.

Transfer Sage – PEA has not got his heart set on Newcastle with his best mate whispering good things in his ear about us. I think he mentions in another article holding out for ManUre as it was his dream to play in their shirt and in their stadium. I would be very surprised if we manage to get him in this window and even if we’re still in this division in the next window. Remy has really kicked me in the balls as he would have been extremely helpful in the our play on the pitch. His pace and trickery is what we are seriously missing along with a proper CB to partner Colo (Saylor is way too injury prone to be relied on).

2 different issues for me there.

    1. indentifying players
    2. getting them in

We seem to identify good players, for a reasonable fee for the quality but we struggle to get many of them in.

To me the board aren’t giving Carr good enough guidance….if they wont pay for the players he is recommending then surely they need to tell him to find similar or slightly lower quality to match the lesser fee they will pay. Unless they have told carr and he continues to recommend players we can’t/wont afford….but thats unlikely as they gave him a long contract recently so I presume he is doing his job.

We got Debuchy early and if weird eyes had not mugged us and probably QPR in the longterm we would be saying the management were doing their job.

We have to sign players to make sure we stay up, we might stay up without new players but not as likely.

If we can get new players now that makes up for the summer.

However the club cannot use players signed now as an excuse not to spend again this coming summer.

Hopefully they will continue to push deals now and give us a good boost for the year.

  • 252 boater // Jan 15, 2013 at 1:00 PM

Been watching the Remy fiasco… every knockback can be turned into a positive, depending on how you play it. Siem De Jong would be a big statement. In red hot form and we could build our team around him for the forseeable future – as opposed to hope Remy rediscovers his goalscoring form from time gone by.

We need goals – never mind ‘should Cisse get injured’ – Cisse is worrying the hell out of me up front. Passenger all season – Shola offers more.

TS I have been thinking about the Summer for quite a while.
There needs to be a clear out from the fringe players and I think in the Summer the issue will be homegrown players. The foreign players in the squad are a step up from the British players. If we really want competition for all places we need better homegrown players.

Just came home from the birth of my second son, so i’m not getting too emotional about this.

But really? Remy to QPR is sad, and it just shows us how football is these days. He chooses QPR over us because they have a better manager, more ambitious owner and offers a better contract with more opportunities. I can see that, but no way will he enjoy the 18.000 capacity. HA!

With Ashley at the helm the change will be frustrating slow. Had he bought us 10 years before he did, it could have worked, but now there are too many clubs with too much money to let us do a “arsenal” in an efficient matter.

We’ll buy another player and forget about Remy i hope(if he doesn’t miraculously join us after all this sh|t).

  • 284 tequilamag // Jan 15, 2013 at 1:19 PM

Beattie, that`s a pretty strange argument you posit mate. Why on earth would we bid for him if we were not that bothered about getting him?
Everyone thought it was a done deal before Redknapp offered him stupid money. Are you saying we should have payed him more than anybody else at the club and offered him a free transfer release clause if we went down.

Now why would Ashley be calling his agent?

  • 291 Beattie25 // Jan 15, 2013 at 1:25 PM

    I’ve said it before

We fans are the easiest targets for press, other fans and the club itself for manipulating the transfer market into gossip, chat and interest.

We buy into it each and everytime. Journalists are employed to sell papers, to create internet trends on social networking sites and attract interest to the companies website.

It’s all one big sales pitch, buy advertising space in the paper cos the Geordies will buy anything related to their club and transfers.

Ashley chose our club for a reason. Our love for the club will blind us all to the stark truths we chose not to see.

We always believe something special is around the corner, but usually it’s just another dog shit for us to step in.

Ashley will do the least he possibly can to help the club survive, the press will play us for fools to create interest and other fans will jump on our backs because we have something truly individual.

All the while we play along and never learn.

I still choose to believe that Ashley may see that true financial reward comes through investment, but I think he actually may be thicker than I ever gave him credit for.

1 successful business doesn’t make you a brilliant business man.

    Virgin Cola bombed for Branson.

  • 297 mindshaft // Jan 15, 2013 at 1:29 PM

@kevymartins – Remy had permission to talk to any club that agreed the fee, he’d previously refused to speak to Redknapp so I guess QPR phoned his agent, told him the wages on offer so he jumped straight on the heathrow express to sign the dotted line (well, after adding a few get out clauses of his own :) )

  • 298 BelfastMagpie // Jan 15, 2013 at 1:29 PM

I think Cisse must be the only signing, that hasn’t been a full drawn out saga these last few years. We only do deals quicky when it’s players leaving sadly.

Losing out to Qpr is a full kick in the balls…

  • 299 BigKirky // Jan 15, 2013 at 1:29 PM

Maybe it’s a ploy to do the QPR medical to try and tweak our contract slightly?

Plus, I wouldn’t put it past agents to not give Remy the full detailed discussion with us, so that a glowing report from QPR could fed to him (on the basis that the agents are getting some incentive from a massive signing on fee). You just don’t know what is going on unfortunately.

  • 308 toonluvva // Jan 15, 2013 at 1:34 PM

This suggests to me that the slow winding down of the team is begining. Ba has gone. I expect :-
Krul, Tiote, Cabaye and HBA to be gone in the summer. Colo is still uncertain, could go now or in the summer.
The reason for this bailing out to me is quite simple, the atrocious decision by MA /DL not to invest in the summer, and their current pathetic dealings in the January window (Debuchy excepted) but even he might be joining my list in the summer.
We have signalled to the “purple players” that we are an amateur club lacking any real ambition.
MA has only 1 real love – Sports Direct – we are just a sideline designed to promote SD and nothing more.
Accept that and supporting the Toon is put into perspective. We do it because we love the Toon and will support them irrespective of which league we are in.
    Rant officially over.

Indian….Depends really on the hula hoop round rules. If it’s about keeping it off the floor without using hands then Ashley will be a clear winner as that thing will be used as a belt until the day he dies. However, if it’s about number of spins the 3rd round could be the decider.

Round one there is only one winner.

Can confirm that Loic Remy has chosen QPR ahead of Newcastle United. #QPR #NUFC #THFC #CFC
The France international is awaiting details of QPR’s contract offer before taking a medical with the Premier League club.

A friend of the player refuted suggestions that Remy had chosen QPR instead of Newcastle because the London club offered a superior salary.

He said: ‘Loic’s choice of QPR was based on Harry Redknapp technical attraction. Salary was not the player focus. Maybe this is the reason Newcastle are trying to claim because they have lost a primary target.’

  • 336 JP...from The Rock // Jan 15, 2013 at 1:46 PM

    It’s quite simple;

A- WE SPEND well- We stay up and our players and fans will stay happy as they see an ambitious club going places. Also we get the HUGE TV Money. We’d improve the squad and every ones a winner.

B- WE DON’T SIGN ANYONE ELSE- If we don’t sign anyone else and just wait for our injured players to come back and save the day we are DOOMED. We will go down and then painstakingly see how our beloved team that could have been great and CL material get dismantled player, by player slowly and one at a time and we will be in the fizzy league again with the select few bewildered players determined to take us up were ‘we belong’ AGAIN!!

I can not go through the motions of relegation again. No Way! That happesn I call it quits on football for the sake of my health and sanity.

By February we will all see which plan Ashley chooses A or B?

  • 337 Transfer Sage // Jan 15, 2013 at 1:46 PM

If we fail to sign the required players. a striker and CB minimum then all slate Ashley.

He gambled, wrongly, in the summer but it was a gamble, not a certainty we would be this low in the league….although that might have been the likely outcome.

He now has the problem directly in front of him and knows what the solution is.

If we fail in January I think there will be a lot of protesting against him at st james’ again.

I think Remy or any other player will, if offered a fantastic increase in salary ,will always take it and who can blame them?

Remember these are only men in their 20′s but let’s be honest, who wouldn’t do what they are doing given half the chance?

Yes I know the money paid to these players is obscene but it’s not their fault – if they are also offered a ‘get out of jail for free card’ as seems likely in the case of QPR it makes it even more attractive.

Let’s face it we are not a big club any more (apart from our fantastic supporters) and we can simply not compete with the wages offered by the big clubs or those with very deep pockets.

Unless we are bought by an Arabian or Russian consortium I am afraid we will always be in this position.

Playing in a fantastic stadium in front of 50,000 vocal and loyal supporters is clearly not enough for some players.

At the end of the day money talks and rather than beat ourselves up about this or blame the manager or owner or the stadium cat, let’s just do what we do best and support the team.

Best case scenario they offer around 15 mil and 170k/week in wages for Remy and M’Via and they stay up. Then what? There is no proviso for the level of investment to go from avoiding relegation to making the amount of money you need to turnover to justify paying this amount, as we know only too well. FFP regulations maybe a bit wonky, but there’s no way you can slip the 300 mil plus they’d need to invest in players and to support the said wage bill without incurring problems. Especially given stage 2 of the sanction is reached next season, meaning tighter rule.

The other eventuality is that they spunk the huge amounts of cash, go down with a backbone made of tin foil and the club slips into oblivion. I’m fairly sure the people who own QPR will not bank roll this kind of craziness to get back to the Premiership AGAIN, they are too vain and too success based. Leaving QPR quite merrily (imo. the last thing the Prem needs is another sugar daddy empire) ballsed.

Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, from Remy’s perspective. If they stay up, yeah he’d be alright jack, but in my opinion, at a ticking time bomb of a club.

Say what you want but the Abramovich’s and Emirates Royal family’s of this world are far wealthier than Flavio, Fernandes and co. and their combined wealth. I stand by what I say, QPR are not a big enough club with a big enough support to achieve a Man City/Chelsea situation quickly (i.e. not in the frame of his career), from where they are right now. The more likely outcome, however, is that they go down and he’s released on a free. Now this is where logic comes into play.

There is NO way Remy is worth those wages (84k/week) now, let alone in 6 months time having been released from a demoted side. He’s stock is down, as is his form and half a season in a league he is unfamiliar with, at the leagues weakest team, isn’t going to change that. (Short of 15 goals of him by the end of the season a la Ba at West Ham – which is highly unlikely for a player of his style. Even then, all that did for Ba was a job at SJP for 45k/week, it took another season and a half to get to the ‘big boys’)

This, imo., put’s him rated at exactly where we (NUFC) rate him now. If big clubs wanted him for the money he’s getting (potentially) at QPR, he’d be there now. Age determines this. Meaning that the likely result would theoretically and logically be that his agents would want to place him at a club at our (hopefully!) standard, if not us ourselves.

    All this being the case,

1: QPR should be signing battlers ready for a relegation fight of humongous proportions that don’t put them in a situation that could see a catastrophic failure, even if the stay up, and on wages the club can at least hope to afford one day.

2: Remy should have thought through just how much half a season at those wages is actually worth? A decent campaign this year, running into a mid table position (possible UEFA cup run, is he eligible?) and strong performances at a club (who, let’s face it, is starting to look like the back bone of the French national side), would stand him in far greater stead to push for a move to a bigger club if needs be by the time he hits 28/29.

Surely an Owner with no ambition would want to get in no marks for free and NOT International quality players??

Again, your purposely neglecting to mention re Demba Ba the fact that he had a 7.5m buyout clause, of which he gets 2million, his new salary in the region of 90k per week twice that of HBA /CABAYE/TIOTE. And if one of the top 4 clubs come in for him activating his release clause then he would be off…..like any player in their right mind!

    Tequila

If you read my posts I say Ashley is to blame for our incompetent transfer dealings.

I also said that if it was Remy’s choice then we cannot blame Ashley for the decision of that one man.

However we have no proof other than rumor to say that Remy chose money over football, nothing.

Even so you cannot defend Ashleys model, it is shit. Every so often we may get a bargain but thats at the cost of security and long term improvement.

I want you to now go away and show me one shred of proof that Llambias met with Remy and did all he could to sign him.

If you can do that I’ll shut up. In the meantime it is plausible that NUFC bid for Remy to give the impression they were trying to make moves in the market, when in fact that won’t. It is as equally likely that Remy chose the money.

Everything is rumor Tequila, but I believe that Ashley and his cronies are poor when it comes to finalizing transfers and Remy is an extension of that belief.

Do I believe that NUFC have either manipulated the press or have allowed themselves to be manipulated in the press? Yes I do. It have increased interest in our club and keeps the majority of the fans happy .

It the same mentality as the Norwich result.

‘A point is a point, at least we haven’t got a mercenary, we tried our very best, couldn’t get the result, couldn’t get one over the line same old fcuking tosh blah blah blah’.

I meant laudrup as an example of a manager who is still held in very high regard as a player.

A proven manager costs and wants total control…ie, mourinho, redknapp, mancini,…we wont get one of them.

But another respected manager to lure players who are 50/50 on joining like laudrupp, soljkaer (spelling?) etc might be more viable as they are trying to prove themselves.

“At the end of the season there’ll be talks with the president and the coach, if there’s ambition then why not stay?” Ben Arfa said in an interview with BeIn Sport.

“If there’s no ambition then I’d prefer to leave and compete for trophies. But if there’s ambition at Newcastle and they sign players, then why not stay?

“For now what Newcastle are doing is ambitious (in the transfer market). They should have done it earlier and we’ve spoken about that.”

I think we need to be far more worried about ourselves and getting more pro-active rather than hoping it turns out bad for QPR. I know a good part of the problem is the manager, but a good CB at the very least is a must as Willo just = relegation.

  • 395 breno95 // Jan 15, 2013 at 2:11 PM

One theme that sticks out a mile on here with alot of posters is the belief that because NUFC show an interest or even agree a fee with the selling club that the player involved will dismiss any other interest just because its NUFC.
I also disagree with comments that MA has no interest in the club and has no ambition.
The club bid 8million for Remy, offered a very lucrative 5 year package. Remy listened to other offers and chose the highest wage package. That’s not a fault of MA.
We have made previous bids before (Luk de Jong 11million) but he chose to play his football in Germany. Again not a fault of MA.
I also agree with the wage policy and am pleased to see the club are not lavishing huge salaries on average footballers.
As for the ‘where’s the 35million from Carroll gone’ – well it has been reinvested. The proof of that is in the signings of HBA, Cabaye, Cisse, Ba, Anita, Debuchy, Obertan, Santon, Marveaux, Bigirimana.
The criticism of some is there own opinions but it’s not based on facts. That is clear as noone on here has the slightest clue of how the club is administered at any level. None of us attend management meetings at board level and noone witnesses anything to do on the footballing side. Comments are based on speculation only and personal opinion.
To state otherwise confirms that the person is either very immature and thinks it is all straight forward or there just plain stupid.
As for the Butland and Siem De Jong links they are rubbish and neither will sign at the club. That’s not claiming to be an ITK it’s just applying a bit of common sense.
Lastly, transfers take time these days. Selling clubs play hard ball to get as higher fee as possible especially in these current economic times, players maximise their options and look at all offers and in most cases follow the money (Remy prime example) and buying clubs conduct lots of enquiries into players character and health as parting with fees in the millions is a risk if mistakes are made.
It would be great if transfers all worked out as they do on FIFA13 but this is a big money industry and clubs with an owner like ours will prosper long term unlike those such as QPR. patience is a virtue chaps. It’s a shame that it’s not a virtue that can be applied to NUFC bloggers. The same comment in relation to a brain could also apply to some on here as well.
If it all goes wrong and a relegation is the final outcome then yes have your moan but I’m pretty sure it is the furthest thought from MA’s mind.

I’ve seem some funny comments on twitter from NUFC fans since last night. First they start slagging off Remy even though 99.9% of them would leave there job for another for as much as a £25 pay rise. Then they say fuck the mercenaries of this world, JUST LIKE BA…. F**K EM! Then to top it off the SAME people then say “Lets bring back Carroll, him and cisse would be class and he will play for the shirt not money”

…..in the words of a man i loath, my word.

Firstly if Demba Ba, our top goal scorer and best striker on the books who unfortunately had a release clause, is a mercenary – which he is because football is a job which doesnt last forever – then I would love more of him ASAP to save us from impending doom. Secondly Andy “I’ll leave if you don’t offer me another contract after 6 months into my current contract oh and triple my wages whilst youre at it” Carroll??? Really?? He will play for the shirt yeah? The same shit he basically shat all over after talking about it being a dream come true? He’s a c**t end of story.

Now, onto Remy himself, if we havent offered enough and hes gone to QPR its not QPRs fault. They are in trouble – just like us – and their owner is willing to gamble it all for survival – unlike us – so really QPR deserve nothing more than plaudits from their fans. If Remy turns good and they stay up do any of you really think ANYONE connected with QPR will go “Well we survived but… he’s draining the finances a bit isnt he?” Will they bo***x.

That being said, I hope he gets injured really soon and QPR go down.

sadly, taht is the case, but it doesnt need to be. NUFC is being ridden by Sports Direct all day long. I have previously outlined what I feel is our purchasing policy and it stioll holsd true, but doesnt move us forward as a club

  • 412 t00ntime // Jan 15, 2013 at 2:15 PM

People always go on about how good our policiy is etc, and players who dont sign are money grabbers. But clubs can attract players by 3 things

    1- CL football, not us.
2- chance of trophies, not us
    3- money, not us.

We dont offer players anything other then, “we have loyal fans.” lets be honest that means nothing to any player who isnt connected to NUFC.

But the my point is, the avg wage is around 50/60k (for first 11 player)in the premier league. We offered a full international (rumour) 40k a week and then expect him to sign cause we have alot of fans? No chance.
We complain simmo wants more money when he is on 20k a week, he is one of the most under payed players in the league, but we expect hin to sign because we have a 50000 stadium?

The point is the players leaving/not coming, arent money grabbers, we just offer nothing special to a player. The 3 main things we offer non.

I dont want us to start spending crazy money on players but 50/60k for remy wud of been a fair wage+ more chance of coming. QPR dont have endless wages this 80k offer was probably the max they were will ing to give

Butlands stated outright that he’s not moving anywhere where he is not given the number 1 jersey , he had the chance to go to Liverpool a couple weeks ago and turned it down because of that!
I’m gonna probs but myself inline for alot of criticism in saying this, but I’ve seen him play 8 or 9 times this season, clarkies a friend of the family so always keep an eye on his teams, and i think Butland is better than Krul! if not better, than has the potential to be! His distribution is miles better, his reactions aren’t quite as quick but theyre faster than foresters and he has great control of his area, organises a defense well too, very vocal! when he moves to a premier league club, in the next 2 years im sure he will be England number 1! Not saying I want Krul to leave, rumour was in the summer though Barcelona were looking at him closely and ive heard athletic madrid have scouted him too as chelsea wont allow them to buy Courtois….. NUFC don’t chuck money around freely, if they’re willing to spend on a goalkeeper then there is a definate reason, because Elliott has proved this year to me more than able back up, thoughts he’s looked very good for a number 2, and Jak Alnwick as number 3 plays for england under 19′s and has been raved about…..

beattie, I have never said at any point that Remy discussed anything with Newcastle only that Newcastle had made a bid which was accepted. That is not speculation that came from OM.
I have also critcised Ashley for gambling on not making Transfers in the Summer.I also am happy to confirm that all clubs use the press to put a positive spin on their affairs.
I don`t care if you shut up or not, really your opinion means as much to me as anybody else. If I agree with you I will say so. If I think you talking bollox I will also say so. As for Remy I am sure he will or possibly even has said it was for football reasons. That does not mean I believe it for one second and I think the majority of people would agree on the Remy issue it has all come down to QPR offering stupid money.

  • 425 Magpietillidie22 // Jan 15, 2013 at 2:20 PM

I’ve seem some funny comments on twitter from NUFC fans since last night. First they start slagging off Remy even though 99.9% of them would leave there job for another for as much as a £25 pay rise. Then they say f**k the mercenaries of this world, JUST LIKE BA….

The same shirt he basically pooed all over after talking about it being a dream come true? He’s a c**t end of story.

Now, onto Remy himself, if we havent offered enough and hes gone to QPR its not QPRs fault. They are in trouble – just like us – and their owner is willing to gamble it all for survival – unlike us – so really QPR deserve nothing more than plaudits from their fans. If Remy turns good and they stay up do any of you really think ANYONE connected with QPR will go “Well we survived but… he’s draining the finances a bit isnt he?” Will they bo***x.

That being said, I hope he gets injured really soon and QPR go down.

Got to disagree. We don’t offset 1 and 2 but we certainly offer 3.

Think. We scout around the world. Now compared to man utd 60k a week wage cap isn’t a lot. But compared to 80/90% of clubs it’s a good wage.

Other than city, man utd and Chelsea no club pays significantly more.

Qpr pay highest around 80k I have read.
Arsenal have Walcott 75k contract on table to make him a top earner.
Spurs have a 70k wage cap.

Our problem is our wage cap for a new transfer seems to be 40k, yes we later offer them a better contract but thats not alaways going to be good enough (like with remy) if we had just offered him

don’t disagree spurs are a more attractive club as they have been in champs league recently and look likely to get it this year.

I have no idea what we offered remy…heard anywhere from 35-55k……so maybe we did offer him a decent wage.

And it was enough to get ben arfa, cabaye, debuchy, cisse, marvoux, santon, so must be doing something right.

I think as fans we just have to accept we might miss out on some players and try not to get too annoyed by it.

However, this wage cap is not an excuse not to get players in, if we cant get our first choice we need to make sure our 2nd or 3rd choice arrives.

  • 448 jayphoto // Jan 15, 2013 at 2:36 PM

based on what i just wrote on QPR, Remy hasn’t made an awful choice in terms of club, if you look at the following things you could argue that QPR actually have shown more ambition than NUFC in last couple years -

    1) they have a respected, proven Manager, can’t stand floppy chops but hes done well at most clubs he’s been at! Transferred spurs, and you can’t blame him for Pompey, hes a manager not an accountant, if the chairman gives a manager money, hes gonna spend it.

    2) Theyre in London! (shouldn’t be a factor but we all know it is with countless players

    3) In the transfer market theyve added Cesar, Hoilett, Ji-sung, M’bia, Cisse and garner, aswell as being about to add remy and M’vila to go with already solid premier league players in Zamora, Taarabt and nelson! Be honest but we’d all be dreaming of titles if Mashley had brought us those players! They need a defense true but theyre working on it!

    4) Theyre offering double the wages and walk away for nothing release clause if relegated – worst case scenario for remy is they get relegated and he gets to move clubs and take on a massive signing on bonus at say newcastle, arsenal etc

to be honest, if he doesnt go to QPR he needs his head checking, he’s not a geordie and at the moment the only thing Newcastle have over QPR is better fans and bigger stadium, which doesnt mean all too much to players! In diakite, traore, soon to be M’vila, Taarabt, M’bia, Cisse, they’ve got just as many french speaking players at NUFC aswell as London as a city having a MASSIVE french community, with shops, restaurants, social clubs etc

Everyone seems a bit negative today? There’s still half the transfer window to come. Everybody is acting like it’s over and we’ve signed nobody. We missed out on remy because he’s greedy. I don’t want him playing for us if he’s only in it for money. His record in the past year or so is abysmal so whoever we bring in instead may be a blessing in disguise. I’m 99% sure we will sign a ST and CB and 40% sure we will get someone else, maybe a CM like Sissoko. Stop hating the board and Pardew when they’ve not done anything wrong this window so far.

I seem to recall the signing of Cisse came out of the blue without long links to “known targets” (aka guesswork and speculation)

  • 458 Magpietillidie22 // Jan 15, 2013 at 2:40 PM

    Boycotting? Really?

First off, boycotting will never work unless everybody that goes to SJP will do it. That’ll never be the case. It’s always a minority because of the love for our club and MA knows this lol its the reason hes got a share in Rangers too. Come what may, the fans ( or at least enough of them ) will continue to pay for the running of the club.

Secondly, someone has already made this point – we are what we are as a club. Some players will join because of it’s atmosphere, passionate fans, football city and the overall money cant buy package. But some – most – won’t. If you’re a top footballer – even if you really aren’t fussed about wages – you are going to want success, ambition and most of all TROPHIES. Right now we are an Everton. Sometimes challenge, sometimes won’t, will look for bargains and will chug along.

Unless it’s a level playing field moneywise across all of football we will never, ever, EVER be anymore than a stepping stone. The sooner some accept that, the easier it’ll be to be a NUFC fan.

Its so frustrating its actually ruining my life watching the Toon this is the lowest i have felt watching them and that’s including the relegation season and championship!!!

I honestly thought that this window would be different I actually honestly believe that Pardew thought it would be different but its looking like we will sign no one else because we do not want to pay a little bit extra on wages

Not talking about Remy as he has been offered sick wages but if we had started the bidding at maybe 60k he might not have even bothered looking at QPR’s offer sometimes you just have to give players that bit extra

Its shocking as we have the making of a fantastic team and we could be following the Ajax and Dortmund model about selling a big player and then getting players in to improve but we never sign the players at the right time this has been 3 windows in a row where we have been let down

I know we signed Cisse but that window we should have bought a defender and a winger and we probably would have came 3rd and had champs league!!!

    @ tinman
I thank you for taking the time to read my post and comment in such a respectful and mature manner. Thank you.

    @ Rotonda
Re your comment on Pardew being a lesser attraction. I would agree if pitting him against a top club manager such as AF, AW, RM, JM but not against HR. My view is the club should be the key selling point and current players not so much a manager. However, I accept that a popular manager does help as it did for us in the early years of KK.
Getting back to the Remy issues, it is quoted in the written press Remy negotiated a 70k a week salary with NUFC but QPR offered more. Another issue relating to statements that DL is the worst transfer man ever? For all we know he may be the best but it’s in his job remit to then stick within strict pay structures of the club. It’s a view that should be considered as we all are governed as to what we can buy/own. I want to buy a BMW 5 series but my personal financial position will determine the model and year of what I can buy. Or I could do a QPR, throw caution to the wind and get a brand new one then have it repossessed in a few short months or stop feeding my kids and never watch TV and enjoy electricity and heating again.
I know what I can afford and stick to it as we all do. It’s the same in business if it’s operated right.

On us agreeing the Remy fee, he was still under the idea that QPR was actually in Scotland. So he flew to London with the intentions of gan’ to Harrods to buy his lass a pen, before catching another plane to Newcastle; however he noticed a sign saying Queens Park – 6 miles. Magpietillidie22 @ 457

    You are absolutely right.

Players generally want trophies and money. If they cannot the former they will go after the latter (to safeguard their future).

However, some players move for different reasons (home town club, grass always greener, test themselves, fed up with current club etc etc) but money like all employees is always paramount especially as they have such a short career at the top.

Shearer although a local hero and great centre forward was an absolute mercenary when money was involved. Rumour has it that no one was to earn more than he which, according to rumours, may have stopped some players coming to the club.

Regards Remy our other former targets Modibo Maiga and Bryan Ruiz haven’t exactly pulled up trees so far in the Premiership. Time to tell for Remy and QPR.

You win some and you lose some.

We need Hatem or Yohan to get on the phone and say the following to Remy

“I understand your decision to join QPR, good luck to you mate. When you meet with Harry to sign the contract say that you’re so pleased to be working with such a world renowned wheeler and dealer”

And as if by magic, Remy is looking for a club again with an extremely confused look on his face.

    @KRUL TO BE KIND
PEA’s don’t be fooled by PEA’S crystal boots, hes not a Nile Ranger gangster wannabe, this lad is seriously hard working on and off the pitch! Won a lot of awards in youth tournaments etc! Its unfair to judge him on goal return as he’s often played on the left, especially earlier into his career! He’s really well liked by st ettiene supporters and players alike, hes pretty funny and quirky in his interviews, hes a very happy character and like i said he works his ass off on the pitch!
Compare him to Remy, who plays with a frown, has alienated his team mates at Marseille for a year now after throwing his toys out of the pram because they wouldn’t let him leave last year! Theres a reason Marseiile have dropped his valuation from 25m to 8m and its not to do with talent! The dudes pretty much said himself, he even considered retiring from football this season, he heavily lets outside influences affect his form on the pitch, if Aubameyang is more Gazza when it comes to smiling, Remy is a young Anelka! No doubting his ability when he fancies it but Marseille obviously feel they can’t get him to perform anymore, for me he’s out of love with football, he plays for a pay cheque

Reports in Italy are claiming that Newcastle United have made an offer in the region of €3million (£2.5m) for Nancy left-back Massadio Haidara. FIFA agent Oscar Damiani, who acts as an intermediary for Nancy, said: “It is likely that he will eventually go to England. The cost is still around €4-5m (£3-3.4m).

  • 509 jayphoto // Jan 15, 2013 at 3:19 PM

saying that, on talent wise alone Remy is better than Aubame! Just PEA will give 100% in all games. hes a coaches dream and younger than Remy so chances are he could reach Remy’s level! With Remy, you could have all the talent of messi maradonna and pele combined, but if you can’t be bothered or focused all of the time it counts for nothing, if he fancied it he could take the premier league by storm the way Henry did! If NUFC wanted to sign him so bad they should have convinced him the Bigg market and Quayside was better than anything in london…..

  • 510 Sinner // Jan 15, 2013 at 3:19 PM

“I am interested by Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool. Today, these clubs are over Newcastle,” Ben Arfa told BeIn Sport.

“During the summer, there was contact with Chelsea. But I wanted to stay in Newcastle.

“Whoever tasted England, it’s hard to go elsewhere. There is everything to be happy.

“Rémy is right to come here. This is a player who has shown that when it is confident it can be a great striker. He will much like and we, along with other French players, we’ll help much. He will explode.

“Today, my goal is to stay in England.

“Paris Saint Germain, why not? This is the club of my dreams. It’s just because that.”

Also said he would talk with the owner at the end of the season to see the ambition of the club. Seriously doubt we’re going to see him next season. :(

did you see the article I posted earlier.

Ben Arfa said he would stay if the club matched his ambitions, he said mistakes were made in the summer but the club is showing the right ambition now.

For me this is a great quote, slightly concerning he may leave, but it shows he thinks about his football. Rather have a player thinking about what is going on within his club instead of just turning up without thinking why he is there.

  • 514 Magpietillidie22 // Jan 15, 2013 at 3:23 PM

“At the end of the season there’ll be talks with the president and the coach, if there’s ambition then why not stay?” Ben Arfa said in an interview with BeIn Sport.

“If there’s no ambition then I’d prefer to leave and compete for trophies. But if there’s ambition at Newcastle and they sign players, then why not stay?

“For now what Newcastle are doing is ambitious (in the transfer market). They should have done it earlier and we’ve spoken about that.”

definately wouldn’t worry bout Ben Arfa! Theres alot about him that doesn’t come out in the press, Pardew, Coaching staff let him get away with murder on the training ground, behaviour towards other players etc that would get him transferred at other clubs gets a blind eye turned toward it, Pardew learned pretty quickly that HBA is a player you can’t give a rollocking to, He feels loved at Newcastle! That interview is better if you speak french, he wasnt saying he wants to leave for those clubs, he was saying should he ever leave then those are massive clubs who would interest him because of their ambition! Think his point was he wants to see higher quality players at newcastle to play with and aslong as that happens he is happy here! Went on to say alot of good about the club too and said he is most happy here than anywhere else in his career and that the love he feels from club and fans counts for an awful lot!
In other interviews he’s really talked up Pardew aswell as a manager that makes him want to be better and to fight for the team! He mentions wanting to repay the managers faith in him by finding consistency and helping the team, he counts Pardew as a big plus point in staying at newcastle

  • 521 woolerbill // Jan 15, 2013 at 3:28 PM

There is however many stupid and fickle Newcastle fans who blow hot and cold over the slightest thing and cannot see past their hatred of what the current owner and board have done to keep the club from almost certain financial collapse and demotion down the leagues a la Glasgow Rangers, Portsmouth, Leeds United.

Get real, we lost a player that is all. Remy’s priority was money. I want people of character like French teammates Cabaye and Debuchy who will put their heart and soul into our club.

love that someone here said sign Wassim Ben Yedder! Reckon he’s gonna be massive in a few years, tunisian french like Benny too, lads got a massive future in the game and could go on to be a 20m odd valued player! Toulouse will not let him go this season though, theyre in rubbish financial straits and have pretty much indicated that they are willing to sell virtually anyone in their squad to keep Ben Yedder, Riviere, their other striker isn’t a bad bet either though and would only cost 3-4m, can play on the left, hes not as quick but good in the air, good team player, doesn’t score as many goals as he should but when he plays the players around him score more goals than when he doesn’t!

Kets did you really just refer to a player as being like Aly Cissokho but without the end product as a positive thing?? Cissokho is awful! He has NO end product, if you’ve ever watched him (and i doubt it) you’d see that! He had success in Portugal because attackers don’t press the defenders but put him under ANY pressure and he panics! To be honest you can’t buy fullbacks that look good in Portuguese league! Clubs pay stupid money for the likes of Bosingwa, Ferriera, Miguel, Cissokho etc and then when they get to higher standard leagues they are just dire! Haidara is poor to be honest, he has amazing energy (pretty much the only thing him and Aly have going for them) Will say now, there is NO WAY if newcastle are signing a left back that they will not go in for Lille leftback Lucas Digne who can move on in the summer

toonLYF – dunno, digne turned down chelsea because he’s very career minded! He knows he’s not ready for the step up to a team like that yet and knows he wouldn’t be first team choice! Can see him going to a big mid table team first, hes talked about learning his trade a lot, wouldn’t be surprised if he signed for a Moenchengladbach in germany but with Cabaye and debuchy here, reckon he’d see us as a good next step…..doubt Del boy and big mike would pay out for him though, unless santon leaves

  • 569 Slank // Jan 15, 2013 at 4:04 PM

Would you be happy and satisfied if Ashley closed the club down or sold it to an Indian chicken farmer or heaven forbid to Ellis Short as a feeder club to Sunderland or Glasgow Rangers? He has the power to do that. He doesn’t need the club. It doesn’t provide him with any income. He could close it down and it wouldn’t make a dent in his bank balance.

If you support a club you support it through the good times and the bad times.

So in summary of Ben Arfa, he actually has a fantastic relationship with Pardew (contrary to all the dumb rumors on here), and he will stay as long as the owner shows ambition in the transfer market.

    Well, goodbye Hatem! ;/

On a positive note, I liked the line about “They should have done it earlier, but we have spoken about that”. Unless I’m interpreting it wrongly, it sounds like the board have contact with the senior players over their plans, which is definitely a positive thing at NUFC.

Lets wait and see what happens,
Although i do believe if we don’t lift ourselves out of the mire and closer to tenth and show/tell the payers of our targets next summer then we could see top players leave.
The disgusting thing for us fans is that we can see that we’re so close to being a very good team.
Had we got a top CB in the last 2 windows and an extra striker and LW then we’d have been up with the top 6 but again at Nufc we get close as we did in the 90′s and had we then got in a couple of top players in defence we’d have surely won something.
Again,so close but yet so far and then top players leave as they’ve done at Arsenal as they won’t wait around when a top team tat they’ll win something with comes calling.
Great to balance the books but by spending what he needed to do he would get back cause of a far better league position.
    Daftness!!

Floppy chops got really annoyed there,’twas nice to see Catchy :-)

I think he’d be first choice here over Santon, if he were to join today.

As for Chelsea, obviously Cole would be standing in his way. He has spoken highly of Debuchy on Lille’s website and on l’equipe many times, so it could have legs, i guess.

I’d cry, he’s one of my favourite players at the moment.

Simmo off to West Ham say £2M & Santon to Udenise for say £5M. Colo to this other Argentine Club £5M. It’s a fire sale by the Wee Club in the North East. Then HBA off to Juventus & Willo to Fray Bentos. Forget big names like Sissoko & De Jong we are just alerting bigger clubs by showing an interest. exactly mate, just because someone may think Ashley is a terrible chairman doesn’t somehow qualify Shepherd as a good one. He was bent, his son Kenneth was and is bent as a nine bob note. It’s nothing to do with luck. It’s a fact. Ashley owns the club. We have to live with that. Ashley bought it. He put his own money into it. He hasn’t as far as I can tell took money out of it, unlike the Glazers at ManU. He can do what he likes. We also have to live with the fact that at some point it will be sold to someone else.

You don’t have to like him. It’s not a condition of being a Newcastle fan. Owners are going to come and go.

I think there is a balance between ashley an shepherd that we need to find.

Shepherd spent money but on all parts if rubbish, disnt seem to plan more than 5 minutes ahead.

Ashley is far too cautious and doesn’t spend enough at the right times. We are to slow to nice on to other targets when we get priced out if a deal

I don’t expect a 50mil signing but I expect us to buy enough of the right type of players.

just a thought – but what would everything think if nufc did sell Krul and brought butland making say 8-10m profit? Krul for me is a great goalkeeper, im a big fan but i find his distribution really detrimental to our play, he’s not comfortable with the ball at his feet at all and in the modern game its pretty important! Alot of people moan about us playing long balls and Krul bangs it long (and often out of play) more than anyone! Butland is a very good keeper with the potential to be world class (much like Tim Krul i guess) According to swansea we bid big for Michel Vorm in the summer (who deffo wouldnt be a reserve) is it possible that the management just don’t rate Krul has highly as we all do?

Why do you think he bought the 16 yr old Swiss kid for £1M (we didn’t need him) Why is HE looking at Jack Butland & why would he let Tim Krul go PROFIT PROFIT PROFIT! • 617 C // Jan 15, 2013 at 4:26 PM

I am a reader not a writer, but sometimes.

I agree with Davybtoon. A boycott wouldn’t help anything. It would only disrupt the team, cause bad press and probably led in the end to relegation. We don’t need more trouble then we are in. Do you really think that MA have know clue what alot of you think of him. Do you really think that he doesn’t know that you want him to spend every penny that he has on this club and buy players like Man C. I would want that anyway :-)

But they have a responsiblity to this club and the fans before us and the fans that will come after us.You don’t take a hundered year old club and almost put it into administration, like FFS wouldn’t have done if he would have been allowed to still run things. The most important thing is that the club exists and can genereate enough funds to stand on it’s own. You can make progress and win with that method as well, but it takes time.

MA is trying to create some much needed stability at the club, sign AP on a long term contract and almost every player that we sign gets a 5 year contract, at least he has a plan for the club in the long run, not like FFS who didn’t have a clue.

He was brought in to be a 4th choice centre half, of this he would be more than adequate, for me when willo has a bad game we shouldn’t criticize him, im a shocking centre half but if i had the chance to play for toon id play every game (badly no doubt) We should blame the board that Pardew has no other choice but to play him!

Yep, last season’s star performer, Ryan Taylor is back in training. Great news. That means Debuchy can fill in in the holding role whilst Tiote is away, unless we sign Sissoko of course.

No progresss today only rumours. This window is now running a familiar course. Very depressing. If QPR get all the players they are linked with I can honestly see them overhauling us. Unbelievable.
When I was a young lad QPR had a decent team and it always bugged me that a tin pot club could out perform us and have England internationals playing for them. I know they’re bottom of the league but I hope we’re not going back to the future.

I don’t think Ashley is the right owner, he is good financially for the club but not playing wise. I enjoy watching football not reading accounts so I don’t think he does enough.

I think the academy needs an overhaul too. As does the club in general.

    What I would do.

    - sack llambias, give the job to somebody who knows how to run a football club and also knows how to play a nice style, (city brought a barca director in to run the club)

    - look at getting one playing philosophy in the whole club, a pacey, passing game with attacking flair

    - get some coaches and a manager from first team to under 10′s who all coach the same system and have them over seen by somebody implementing one style

    - recruit the right type of player again at all levels from senior to kids

That would cost a decent amount of money and Ashley wouldn’t pay that in my eyes, he is doing bits but not doing it right and thoroughly.

Now this process could take years to implement, but as long as we see evidence if it happening I am happy to wait.

I know, and I’m always one of the middle ground posters. I just think that occasionally people get too carried away with talking about signing bargain players, and laughing at clubs like Liverpool, QPR and Sunderland for spending lots of money.

None of us would be complaining one bit if we plashed out a little to try and get the club back to where we’d all like it to be.

Birmingham have got to sell what they can. they’d bite our hands off for 6m for any player including Butland! their owner has screwed them big time financially, brought the club when he had no money etc, interestingly aswell they have the record for the highest paid player playing outside of a top flight division in any country! Nikola Zigic is on £78,000 a week with goal and appearance bonuses aswell as a loyalty bonus for not leaving each year that puts his wages up a little bit! Amazing, we thought we had it bad with disco

The meltdown on this blog at the moment…

How anyone can blame Ashley for Remy deciding to go to QPR instead of us is beyond me. Even if they do stay up it’s only a matter of time before their extortionate wages cripple them. Although I hope we send them down in May.

Remy has chosen money over us, he isn’t worth that much and we shouldn’t pay it. Had it been £5k/£10k more then I would be annoyed too.

Times really are depressing as a NUFC fan at the moment, aren’t they? :(

Personally feel its false though, Lorient have 2 players newcasle should have signed that really make him look good, Alain Traore (a behind the striker/left wing player) and Benjamin Corgnet (lampard style goal scoring centre mid) Aliadiere is scoring the goals but they make him alot of chances per game! His work rate is immense tho, chases every ball

What now for Newcastle and Alan Pardew after Rémy takes French leave?

Magpies’ latest attempt to recruit from across the Channel has backfired, leaving the manager desperate to land a striker as well as a wise old-head

    Share 1
    inShare0
    Email

    Loïc Rémy
Newcastle were rocked by the departure of Demba Ba while Loïc Rémy, above, may be on his way to QPR. Photograph: Jacques Demarthon/AFP/Getty Images

After seeing his QPR team lose at Newcastle only last month, Harry Redknapp launched into a rant against overpaid footballers and the game’s skewed economics. “St James’ Park holds 52,000 but Loftus Road holds 18,000. You shouldn’t be playing players massive wages when you only have 18,000 seats,” said the new Rangers manager as he pledged not to “screw over” the owners by “overpaying” any more “average” players.

Fast forward a few weeks and the man who might have been England coach is preparing to welcome Loïc Rémy to QPR from Marseille after staging a successful, last-minute ambush of the France striker’s move to Newcastle. Newcastle had agreed an £8m fee with Marseille and Rémy had told friends – Joey Barton included – that his move to Alan Pardew’s team was all but done and dusted but then, when airport check-in staff labelled his luggage as he departed France, they printed out stickers with LHR for London Heathrow rather than NCL for Newcastle.

A late change of planes and plan prefaced by calls from his agent signalled that a basic wage of around £75,000 a week at QPR – quite possibly approaching double Newcastle’s offer – and a guaranteed departure from Loftus Road for a minimal transfer fee in the summer should Redknapp’s side be relegated, had turned Rémy’s head.

In what constituted a major blow for Pardew, arrangements for a medical followed by an “unveiling” in Newcastle were placed on tentative hold, then cancelled. Only time will tell whether Rémy will rescue QPR from relegation thereby justifying the high-stakes gamble Redknapp has clearly persuaded Tony Fernandes, the QPR owner, to risk yet more money on. “It was a choice between money and footballing ambition,” said a Newcastle source.

While Pardew’s team are on an awful run and by no means safe from relegation themselves, that comment is no exaggeration. Rémy had a choice of running out in front of 52,000 fans every home game at a club who finished fifth in the Premier League last season and are still in this season’s Europa League or joining one that attracts much smaller attendances and is facing a more serious battle to stay in the top flight.

Perhaps, then, it was not such a bad thing for Newcastle and Pardew as they struggle to find a successor to Demba Ba capable of gelling with Papiss Cissé. Ba may have had a suspect left knee – and it was interesting to hear Rafael Benítez say this week that concerns over its condition dictate that Ba will be rotated – but the Senegal striker rarely stopped scoring.

In contrast Rémy has scored only one goal for Marseille this season, after being used largely as a substitute. Although he scored 12 times for the French club last season and 15 times the one before that, it appears that a fall-out with the club’s management did little for either his fitness or final touch. After such a poor autumn and early winter, can he really hit the ground running in west London?

That said, Newcastle’s scouting system, led by Graham Carr, has proved consistently strong. Pardew’s recent problems have been largely about the extreme slenderness of a squad ravaged by injuries to players including Yohan Cabaye and Hatem Ben Arfa.

The overwhelming odds are that Ba’s successor – not to mention one or two much-needed defensive reinforcements – will be found in France but the presence of seven French-speaking players – five of whom could be described as first choices – in Pardew’s first-team squad is starting to cause some disquiet among fans. Suddenly St James’ Park season ticket holders are worried about dressing-room cliques and the absence of the much-vaunted “British core” even Arsène Wenger now seems keen on restoring to Arsenal.

Nagging worries about suggestions of fault lines developing between Newcastle’s French and Spanish speakers, and the sense that locals boys such as Shola Ameobi and Steven Taylor an in peril of becoming an endangered species, will hold little sway, though. Finance dictates that Mike Ashley, Newcastle’s owner, will remain unmoved. Pardew likes James Tomkins, the young West Ham centre-half, but he would cost £10m and an equivalent defender could be purchased for a third of the price and smaller salary in France.

It is for this reason that Derek Llambias and other key Newcastle figures have adopted the W hotel in Paris as a base for entertaining the representatives of potential new signings aged 26 and under – experience is much less important to Ashley than a decent sell-on value – and why last Saturday a headline in l’Equipe read “France: A discount supermarket for Newcastle United”.

A charm offensive which has seen French media representatives welcomed warmly to Tyneside, where Newcastle’s press team even greet them with “Bonjours”, and imported players offered every available assistance including specially cooked meals in the training ground canteen has paid off. Newcastle’s stock is high in France, with the team’s performances shown on weekly TV, along with those of Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool.

The problem is that many of those displays this season have been so poor that French players now appear to be having second thoughts about their agents being charmed at a Paris hotel. And if that is not the case, their club’s boards of directors suddenly feel determined not to be treated like a discount supermarket for Ashley and his team of bargain hunters.

It seems that the Gabonese striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will be Pardew’s new target but St Etienne are displaying an enthusiasm for playing hardball. Perhaps Aubameyang will be told he can return to France for medical treatment if he gets injured. Ben Arfa is Newcastle’s best player and a sometimes tricky personality, but the fact he is spending several weeks undergoing rehabilitation at Clairefontaine, near Paris, rather than under the auspices of Newcastle’s own highly skilled medical team begs all sorts of questions.

At a time when Fabricio Coloccini, the club captain, has announced that personal difficulties have made him determined to depart for Argentina as soon as possible – something Pardew is endeavouring to talk him out of – maybe the moment is right to make an exception to the broadly sensible policy of buying under-26s.

As Steven Gerrard told my colleague Andy Hunter last week, he and Liverpool benefited immeasurably from playing alongside the ageing but still acute Gary McAllister a few years ago.

Newcastle clearly need at least one new striker and at least one new defender but Pardew, you suspect, is also crying out for an experienced old head who can provide on-field nous and off-field clout. Frank Lampard would clearly be too expensive but Newcastle really could do with making that sort of signing.

Pardew has done a very good job but right now what he arguably most requires is a McAllister to help him raise the bar. Meanwhile, only time will tell whether Rémy is the answer to Redknapp’s prayers.

Yeh I do agree we should spend more than we do, not massively as I can’t expect us to spend more than we have, something would go wrong eventually doing that.

I think teams like Chelsea and city will live their spending policy, it’s safe a lot of the time as their owners seen genuinely interested in the long run and have enough money that even 50/60milbis small change to them.

Our owner isn’t in the same bracket as them, no where near, so I don’t expect that level of spending.

I’m not suggesting anyone else does either by the way, I just wish we weren’t quite as tight but I sort of appreciate why we are.

  • 680 santonthenewmaldini // Jan 15, 2013 at 4:53 PM

We actually need 2 strikers 1 to replace Ba and one as backup at this stage i would be happy with Danny Graham as the Ba replacement and then a young striker on the cheap would still be better than the Ameobi
    brothers!!!

If i have to see either of those lazy boys stroll about the pitch when we are getting beat I will go mental!!

Say what you want about Graham but he does score goals if you give him chances

Why have we not signed a centre half?Cannot understand it there are loads of good ones who would not be that expensive take your pick from players from Holland, Germany, Belgium, France and Spain for under 5 million you could get a guy who is strong , quick and good in the air and they will not want a massive wage

I actually think what will happen is we will sign 2 more players and what will happen is next season Pardew will get any money from player exits and television money to make a complete overhaul of the staff and the Wonga money will go towards players as well

That way he will not need to spend anything out of his own money this season and next year we will be fully sufficient to just allow Carr to pick up gems , means we will have to start next season with a complete new team again though

  • 681 boater // Jan 15, 2013 at 4:54 PM

People saying a centre halve is the main priority astonish me. Our two remaining senior strikers have scored 3 league goals between them all season. If you are imagining a new foreign defender coming into this maelstrom and hitting the ground running , and helping us clean-sheeting our way to survival – whilst we continue to create diddly squat at the other end – you obviously haven’t supported NUFC for very long.

Butland is hardly ‘back-up’ – it took months to resolve the Forster/Krul/Harper issue – why would they want to go through that again?

  • 682 jmr271186 // Jan 15, 2013 at 4:54 PM

  • 687 Dagwoodz // Jan 15, 2013 at 4:56 PM

I think the most frustrating thing about this entire situation for me is seeing a vast majority of players jumping to (negative) conclusions before we’ve even reached the half-way point of the transfer window.

IRT the Remy situation, I have yet to see anything official outside of Marseille stating that they have accepted bids from three clubs. If he signs for us, great. I was never big on him to begin with, I thought he was going to be a lemon. If he signs for QPR, then it’s not someone I would have liked in the team anyways.

I think the transfer window is more exciting if your expectations are kept in check. I HOPE that we sign a bunch of players, who are 1st team quality, in positions we need. I EXPECT that the board is going to sign one more player, an outside possibly of two, and claim they “just couldn’t get the others over the line”. With that being said, if you had told me that we would be getting 2-3 1st team players in this window in November, I would have said it was a good window.

No reason for the doom and gloom. Still have a little over 2 weeks to get players in, and even though the board has dragged their feet about money and wage structures with some of the players, I think that they are keeping to the financial standards which they had established. I don’t have a problem with that at all.

Ideally, we are able to actually get Sissoko or De Jong along with a CB. I’ll be content with that, even though I think we need an additional two players as well. (that’s if Colo leaves; a CB and an additional winger for competition for places in the squad)

Not upset with the board. Not upset with Pardew. Not even mad with Remy for supposedly, (again, it’s not confirmed), deciding at the 11th hour to go to QPR. Just want to see our boys actually start earning 3 points in games and climbing away from the bottom of the table.

For all of you doom and gloom folks, I think with the squad we have (assuming Colo leaves) we will still manage to stay up; though not much more than that.

    @Boater

Yes that was a good goal but if we had not been so negative in that game and started with Marveux and Obertan we would not have needed him to come on as it would have been comfortable as QPR were gash

Also he only does that once in about 14 games and wanders about lazy for the rest of them Brighton game for example??

Against Man Utd we brought on Shola and Sammy when game was there to win lost the midfield battle and the game as both of them never moved an inch

I do appreciate what he has done for the club over the years but its time he was replaced he should be about 4th choice

  • 705 jayphoto // Jan 15, 2013 at 5:05 PM

as for a striker/winger – anthony knockaert has been the best player in the championship!
12m would buy us Knockaert and Rhys Williams from boro and make us a much stronger team for it

  • 706 Tsunki // Jan 15, 2013 at 5:05 PM

Well this has 1,000 – poster written all over it? Whats the prize for that, ED? Another Audi? A day off from typing? A (shudders) date with a (shudders again) mature . . . person?

  • 707 Super Magpie // Jan 15, 2013 at 5:06 PM

    Big Pappa Cisse
Exactly, our next two games are Reading and Villa. These are the games we have to win to stay up. Bringing in new players as soon as possible will only help us. If we manage to get atleast 1 player in for Reading ( which I don’t think we will) then we are in a much better position.

  • 708 Dagwoodz // Jan 15, 2013 at 5:06 PM

And for those of you who have written Cisse off as not being able to cut the mustard this year…just remember he’s been playing in a position where he has lost his finishing touch because that wasn’t his job out on the wing. It’s going to take him time to re-claim that.

IMHO, if we can find an effective hold up CF to compliment Cisse and collect all of the hoofed balls to the front for distribution.

Don’t want Krul to leave, but if he does, so be it. Krul and the defense really need to figure out that a keeper booting the ball to the other 18 is what should happen only when a quick outlet pass or throw isn’t available. I can’t blame Krul for booting it all the time, because the defense rarely gives him a viable outlet to distribute the ball on the ground or with a throw. I think that’s more the issue than Willo booting the ball out of the box during open play. Granted, it would be nice to have someone who is comfortable with the ball at their feet, but he is doing the best he can with the skill set he has.

you couldnt make this sh1t up could you

  • 710 boater // Jan 15, 2013 at 5:08 PM

papiss9 – so don’t leave him one on one?

That stupid fcuking tedious forum-favourite miracle 4-3-3 with cisse in the middle and some imaginary guy we haven’t signed there.. blah blah blah – in your head it works – in reality Cisse isn’t scoring or even looking like he will at the moment. Ben Arfa scores 4 goals a season and is a month away from playing.

We were in relegation form before the league’s 2nd top scorer departed. We need goals FFS wake up.

  • 711 Williamsonsuks // Jan 15, 2013 at 5:08 PM

Wasn’t really bothered about Remy, more worried about our defence. Need 2 big, scary CB’s. and just a tall, fast, young guy to play alongside Cisse, not caring who he is. Never gonna give that 2 tits credit. We wouldn’t be here now if they’d spent when the ball was rolling. Yeah the’ve reduced debt, pumped money into training ground, youth facilities. All meaningless at this moment in time. The last thing any fan needs to hear is the’ve balanced the books, when we are fighting relegation for the 2nd time in 3/4 years. ASHLEY FCUK OFF MAN. If he put is into liquidation, at least we’d know where we stand!

  • 712 ?Miguel? // Jan 15, 2013 at 5:09 PM

Why didnt we sign knockeart (500,000) in the summer we was linked with him! That would of bedn adding depth!

  • 713 Beattie25 // Jan 15, 2013 at 5:09 PM

striker/winger has to be Jeremain Lens or Dries Mertens.

  • 714 wreker16 // Jan 15, 2013 at 5:10 PM

Does aubameyang play out wide at all? If anything we need a striker who is also great on the wing, as it appeared remy was, is obameyang any good out wide

  • 715 Tino99 // Jan 15, 2013 at 5:11 PM

I really cant believe that we still use Ameobi, for many a years he didnt even play. Absolutely ridiculous. His goal ratio per game is appalling. And then Williamson, he was only suppose to be used for cover but he is a permanent fixture. It baffles me.

The board cant be that stupid to realise that some of our targets would go to other clubs. I prey we pull something out of the bag in terms of CB and winger/striker

  • 716 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 15, 2013 at 5:12 PM

    Wrecker
Doesnt matter where he plays he’s said he’s not leaving til summer and is in contact with both manc clubs so we got no hope, unless we pull a QPR and offer triple wages ;)

  • 717 Phillipe Alberts tash // Jan 15, 2013 at 5:13 PM

  • 719 Papiss9 // Jan 15, 2013 at 5:13 PM

this imaginary left wing is marvaux for now. he has quality.
You can’t decide to never put willo one on one. it happens every game.

I the last 5 games cisse has scored 2 goals (manu and everton). He needs service, which he has not been given, and he has been playing out of position.

We are in a relegation battle, that’s why we need players. would help to shut the backdoor. 7 against arsenal and 4 against manu, say nomore.

  • 722 boater // Jan 15, 2013 at 5:14 PM

By the way ‘Williamsosuks’ – to choose a username that abuses a player of the club you ‘support’ is about as cowardly and low as its possible to get on here. I don’t like getting personal – but I can’t tell you how badly that reflects on you as an individual – whoever you really are.

    Fact is williamson does suck!

  • 724 toonLYF // Jan 15, 2013 at 5:16 PM

Aubamayang seems like a right cnt to me. He has a pair of boots completely covered in diamonds, that probably about 20-30 african children lost their lives whilst mining for them.

He is also not as good as everybody on here seems to think, and Wissam Ben Yedder would be a far better option, and cheaper i imagine.

Well pardew’s style dictates we won’t score many, what was it – 1 real shot in anger at Norwich in 90 mins.

Pardew tries to nick 1-0s and sit on it, never goes for a second goal. So on that basis we are better off with a great CB than forwards.

Kind of glad we missed remy. he’s 26 and a bit injury prone and that type of striker relies on explosive pace. when that’s gone, little else in his armoury.

  • 726 Sazzer // Jan 15, 2013 at 5:19 PM

i have to say thankyou to “TINO99″

the link to the article on talksport made for very good reading.

cheered me up a bit considering the absolutely dour news that has been blown our way for, well quite some time now. i hope this window doesnt end up starting brightly but piterring out into nothingness, its not fair on us as fans , and frankly its not fair on debuchy , hes a great signing and im very excited to see him at our club , just hope a depressing transfer saga doesnt drag his name through the mud of this blog either. or worse the transfer gets ignored entirely .

  • 728 Williamsonsuks // Jan 15, 2013 at 5:19 PM

@Boater expected some flack for the name, that’s what I see when ever he is on the park.

  • 729 Jackel001 // Jan 15, 2013 at 5:20 PM

Hey. I’ve browsed this Blog for a long long time and now I decided to sign up so Howdy!

This is the last thing I wanted to see, to me this could pave the way for Krul to Man U and De Gea to Madrid!

By the way, anyone think that this suppose “Medical” for Remy at QPR is taking a hell of a lot longer than usual?

  • 730 Adssy Mccc // Jan 15, 2013 at 5:21 PM

This is such a distraction. I don’t have time to keep checking for updates/rumours, but I feel compelled to do so…

I was lifted when I thought we’d get Remy, in a really good mood in general. Now I feel like crap again! Most of us get optimistic ahead of each window – because we want it to happen so badly! BUT in reality we get let down more often than not.

Frustration and disappointment don’t even come close, but then if we were to sign just two decent players that most agree can help us out, all of a sudden the blog is buzzing again and we feel optimistic again.

They don’t even realise or give a flying toss about how the fans react to all these situations. Pardew may do for a second or two and then he’s moving on to focus on the next crisis at the club, which you have to say is expected in some ways (who else is there to do it!).

  • 731 GAZ09 // Jan 15, 2013 at 5:21 PM

  • 732 Toon-Prodigy // Jan 15, 2013 at 5:22 PM

    Remy completed medical.

Will be training with QPR on wednesday.

Finishing touches with marseille and QPR.

  • 733 boater // Jan 15, 2013 at 5:22 PM

papiss9 – Marveaux ? – who had one good 90mins against a ten man team? Has scored 2 goals in 18months – Plus a few flashes here and there whilst we plummeted down the division? That’s your answer to losing Ba? I take it all back – that’s a genius plan.

Last season – 5 against spurs, 5 against fulham last season plus, 4 against norwich and west brom – before manu / arsenal we had only conceded 2 more goals than last season.

We don’t create chances and score goals all season – eventually the defense creaks when there’s no threat going forward.

Before the Man U/ Arsenal games we had conceded only 2 more.

  • 741 liam1985nufc // Jan 15, 2013 at 5:28 PM

First post on here, but I regularly read the blog!

I’m really undecided which I feel about Remy joining QPR. Part of me is furious as we should have had the deal tied up a long time ago. When he is at his best, he is pretty lethal, but from other angles (media tales of him turning up drunk for training, £85k p/w (say no more) and being badly out of form at the moment), it makes me think we’ve definitely dodged a bullet for the time being. I wish Sky Sports would stop hanging out of Redknapp’ ar*e though, it is infuriating!

We do really need to pull our finger out now transfer wise. 2 CB’s (if Collo leaves) and an ST are absolutely bare minimum. I would have Danny Graham as a short term option for sure, he will give 100% for us and is a good professional, plus he is still scoring when coming off the bench. As for CB, it’s got to be a toss up between Mbiwa and Sakho if we can get them, plus perhaps getting in a younger CB (preferably English, as we need to have x amount of players from England in a squad).

Once we have these, and finally stop playing bloody hoofball (yes Willo, it doesn’t matter that you are a solid pro, but I’m looking square at you on this one!), and use what served us so well in the second half of last season, I’m convinced we will recover and finish mid-table.

Failure to do this, and a long struggle awaits, and praying that we won’t be doing ventures to Derby, Wolves and Blackburn next season.

Marvaux has done more than that, especially the last month. As long as we were in the game against arsenal, marvaux was one of the best.

And for the goals conceded. look at our back 4 in the games we concede 4 or more goals.. willo and perch are often present. against norwich is was simpson and perch vs holt morrisson.

If your point is, we dont’t need CB this window, i don’t agree with u.

  • 743 Spreadthetoon // Jan 15, 2013 at 5:28 PM

Looks like Proud was full of BS. Well it happens.

Remy looks QPR bound tho weird that nothing has been officially confirmed? Anyway if he wants big wages then he should play for them? In the event that QPR were relegated which I would not wish on any club….but if that happened and then Remy approached NUFC….I would PERSONALLY tell him to Jog on…
So half way through the window and no bites…..I really hope for the sake of the club that we do get the players we need past the line…..cos’ sadly this has got EXACTLY the same hallmarks as last window. If that happens I would table a petition to MA to fire DL and appoint a director of football, someone who understands the game and has contacts and has the same philosophy as the mgr. Anyway still got another 1/2 of the window….so I guess things can only get better….they sure as hell cannot get worse!!

  • 744 Munster Mag // Jan 15, 2013 at 5:30 PM

Prodigy, I didnt get the chance, or have the inclination to dig through your previous messages to check your opinions etc. I just feel there is a massive naivity out there about why players go to certain clubs. So lets bury the hatchet if there was one – we’re all Toon brothers !
