Newcastle Going After Top French Striker

12:58 pm, Wednesday, January 16th, 2013 by Ed Harrison · 529 Comments

After Newcastle failed to bring in their number one top target Loic Remy from Marseilles earlier this week, there is news today that Newcastle are now after French striker Bafetimbi Gomis.

Bafetimbi Gomis 98

Bafetimbi Gomis – Lyon 27 year-old striker

The Telegraph is reporting that Alan Pardew and the Toon Board have decided to go after the Lyon striker, who is often called Baby Drogba because his playing style resembles that of the great Didier Drogba, and the price should be what they agreed with Marseilles for Remy – about €10M or around £8.2M

Newcastle were linked with this player way back in the summer of 2008, and news reports at the time said they had lodged a €10M bid for the lad when he was still at Saint Etienne, and there were also reports we were interested in the striker last month.

So like Loic Remy – Gomis has been a long term target of Newcastle’s, but the bad news is that Chelsea are also interested in acquiring the striker.

Gomis joined Lyon from Saint Etienne for €13M in the summer of 2009,  and the striker has played 10 times for France with 3 goals.  This is his fourth season at Lyon and in 174 appearances he has scored 69 goals for the French club, so he can certainly score the goals.

But if Newcastle are to have any success this time around,  they will need to show a lot more drive and determination to capture this lad, then they showed for Loic Remy.

But there’s no doubt the 27 year-old would be a good buy for Newcastle – if we can get him through the door that is.

Comments welcome.

i dont even know what to say anymore

  • 2 G // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:01 PM

I always doubted the credibility of the earlier link with Gomis. What’s the source now? Twitter?

  • 3 Beattie25 // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:01 PM

    No chance

  • 4 Spreadthetoon // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:03 PM

AP “Fast, pacey striker” = Gomis – f’ing clueless. This guy is a good striker but too similar to Cisse and not suitable to partner Cisse IMO. If this is the best that NUFC can come up with, inc. AP then its time for the door to be shown to the lot of ‘em! CLUELESS!

  • 5 bemba da // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:03 PM

More chance of mike ashley getting 30 goals a season

  • 6 Novocastrian66 // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:04 PM

Canny name for a striker that, Gomis. Like calling a keeper Dontsave.

  • 7 Spreadthetoon // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:04 PM

AP “Fast, pacey striker” = Gomis – f’ing clueless. This guy is a good striker but too similar to Ba but not as good and not suitable to partner Cisse IMO. If this is the best that NUFC can come up with, inc. AP then its time for the door to be shown to the lot of ‘em! CLUELESS!

  • 8 SuperShearer // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:05 PM

Oh Lord NO! He’s too similar to what we’ve got and we don’t work well in a 4-4-2! We need either a pacy striker of another HBA to play out wide left to feed Cisse. This dude is neither!

  • 9 Toon_Tom // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:05 PM

id rather have the big AC back if this is the type of CF we are now hunting!!!!

In the words of STT = CLUELESS

  • 10 Sinner // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:07 PM

We’re just making noises about signing players, nothing else!

  • 11 ToonMauritius // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:08 PM

we better look elsewhere, he is not what we needs

  • 12 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:09 PM

How the fcuk is this the fast pacy CF that we’ve stated we’re looking for? The lad us a lump ffs shoulda just given ba the contract he wanted would of cost less and still of had a top CF!
Surely if remy has fallen through the next long term target would be gameiro?

  • 13 jeraziah // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:10 PM

He’s not a bad striker… however he would not compliment Cissé one bit..

  • 14 ToonMauritius // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:10 PM

We better go for LUKAKA, and HOILETT, both are young and know EPL well, also we could Hoilett at a cut price

  • 15 hotdog // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:10 PM

    #6 Novo – Bravo :-)

  • 16 richyg01 // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:10 PM

I would highly doubt, after the Remy fiasco, that any members of the press or media will be made aware of who we are after.

Cloak and Dagger, that’s how we roll.

  • 17 GAZ09 // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:10 PM

Surely this is 100% rumor, the guy is slow and nowhere close to being a prolific scorer, He’s actually not that much better than Shola!

  • 18 Rotonda heights // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:10 PM

    ed

    what is wrong with you?

you had one headline saying after top defender which turned out to be tomkins and now another headlne saying top french striker turns out to be Gomis – a French AC and yet more hoofball.

Wish pardew would do the decent thing and just go. may be all our best players wouldn’t be up for leaving then.

  • 19 @lukehodge_ // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:12 PM

anyone seen of that wilfred bony from vitesse..22 goals and 5 assists in 24 games.. only 24 years old aswell.. perfect sort of player for us!!

  • 20 Rotonda heights // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:12 PM

    tads

    gameiro is a good call.

i would take him and sakho on loan from PSG till the end of the season

  • 21 Spreadthetoon // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:12 PM

    richyg01
There more cloak than dagger to this lot so far and IF this is the best that they can come up with then we are fcuked!

  • 22 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:13 PM

I’d have him. He isn’t ideal, but ffs, we need strength in depth, and at least he gives us an option. Who would you prefer if Cisse was unavailable, Gomis or Shola?

Either way, we need some attacking reinforcements asap.

  • 23 GAZ09 // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:13 PM

So Pardew was at Blackpool last night, is there any truth in maybe getting Ince?

  • 24 @lukehodge_ // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:13 PM

scored for fun the season before aswell… SIGN HIM UP

  • 25 boater // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:14 PM

Spreadthetoon – The blog mantra now is we need to sign someone on the basis they will compliment Cisse. I can understand that after the Ba fiasco – but the truth is Cisse is having a nightmare season and to build a team around him and expecting him to click back to last season’s performance is a dangerous tactic – considering his form and our league position.

Remy was perfect as he could have played either position. We need goalscorers – regardless of how it ties into our hallowed 4-3-3 – which may or may not save the day overnight.

  • 26 Beattie25 // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:14 PM

These 2 players for me would save our season!

    1. Dries Martens (Imagine him opposite Benny).

  • 28 Toon_Barmy // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:15 PM

No chance of getting that guy, never ever gonna happen!

  • 30 ToonMauritius // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:16 PM

B.Wilfrid is a manimal, better than Remy

    2. Toby Alderweireld (Imagine him next to Colo).

Do you not think that the press are chucking everyones name in the hat hoping to get a scoop, cos the Toon are looking for a forward.

  • 34 Munster Mag // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:17 PM

Richy at 14 ….thats complete bollocks mate …ie …”Cloak and Dagger, that’s how we roll” . NUFC’s targets are just as well documented by the media as other clubs. Dont think that we are cloack and dagger – we were a couple of times , but most of our transfers were muted in the press. “Slow, tight fisted, lacking vison….thats how we roll ” !!!

  • 35 robin // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:17 PM

We seem to be slipping back into the bad old days of the 80s when we used to sell our best players ie Beardsley,Waddle,Gazza and replaced them with cheap un-skilled players which almost sent the club into the 3rd division not until the great Kevin Keegan came back and built the club up again only for the tactiturn Ashley to reverse the club in to a laughing stock!

  • 36 ToonMauritius // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:18 PM

    GAZ09
Pardew was at Blackpool as On Job Training, need to learn from championship team

  • 37 GAZ09 // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:18 PM

I’d take Mbiwa, Charlie Austin, and PEA

  • 38 Markaccus // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:19 PM

Hmm. Everyone was crying out for this guy a season ago. Now he’s not wanted. Big, athletic, 11 goals in 19? Who cares if he’s the same as what we have. Doesn’t matter though, chelski will get him. Also, there’s reports he’s agreed to stay at his club. Who knows what’s really happening.

  • 39 Spreadthetoon // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:19 PM

    Boater
You cannot say that about Cisse given that he’s played on the wing all season to appease Ba so he could be in the shop window. No one knows if Cisse will fire up or not but Gomis while a good player would not partner well with Cisse. If we weren’t gonna build around Cisse then why the hell was he given the no. 9! None of this make sense. Another day goes by and we hear nothing from the board or Pardew, no reassurances, nothing but dumb insolence and it’s an ABSOLUTE DISGRACE! We deserve better than this, they should at least communicate with us. Telling ya’ if they carry on this window the same they have done so far we’ll all be up the creek!

  • 40 Munster Mag // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:19 PM

Boater. Good point. We nayn also need to go 4-4-2 if it suits Cisse – ie a Bellamy type beside him working the channels.

  • 41 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:19 PM

    Robin,

There were plenty of times since Keegan came the first time and before Ashley the club was a national laughing stock.

  • 42 Hatem's better than Messi // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:19 PM

How many TOP strikers are there in France?

I think the word “top” has been devalued, we have to be way down on Carr’s strikers list for this guy to pop up.

Danny Graham for me. With Tom Ince down the wing.

  • 43 boater // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:20 PM

robin – in fairness you have glossed over a fairly large bit between Keegan’s glory years and Ashley coming.

  • 44 Marzy // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:20 PM

I’m as disappointed as anyone in our transfer policy at our club, but don’t like the thought of buying players who come to us for one thing and that’s Money!, I know football is a business but its getting ridiculous these days, there is no way that Remy would want a transfer to QPR over us any day of the week 5/10 years ago and that’s the same if its Man Utd and us, Man Utd would always be ahead of us purely on the fact that its for footballing reasons, championships/trophy’s, champions league, Europe, cups, Ground capacity etc etc!!, but it seems these days its the financial package clubs are offering that dictates players these days “obvious I know!!”
Fifa, uefa & the FA have to do something about this but am sure they wont as the money bag clubs dictate just like the banks do and its ruining football.
there is no wonder clubs are going down hill fast like Pompey etc “I know it was badly mismanaged too” but smaller clubs “financially that is” try to break into the top quartet to only suffer in the long run, but if they have a billionaire foreign investor! then its just ok? when will football realise this is damaging the best sport in the world! “rant over!!”
Would love P.E.A to arrive at the club and would do everything in M.A power to make it happen as he’s a real star in the making this lad, and then we need DEFENDERS!!!!.

Repost (Ed’s writing time seems to coincide with mine)

    bills (from last thread)

I don’t believe any of us who haven’t shared your optimism since the summer are losing any sleep over the likelihood of losing Remy. You have been calm and pretty consistent in sticking to your guns. I hope you are right. I do worry that Shola has gone from being fourth choice this time last year to second choice now, and a starter if we go with two up front. Good on you for not printing £25 million fantasy teams and claiming that’s progress. I worry that the Butland rumours, among others, suggest two things. One, that the club is still targeting “double your money” signings, whether of not they are an on the field priority NOW. And that money WILL be made available for these signings. My other fear is that any other signings, including the ones you and I agree we need, will only be made if the funds and space on the wage bill is met by selling. Once this window is closed, I’ll leave Ashley alone. He will have lost his main tool of intervention (bar changing manager). We need to get a wiggle on. It’s surprising, even to me, to see us entering the last fortnight of the window with so much still up in the air.

  • 46 Munster Mag // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:21 PM

Lilon, when we we a laughing stock under Keegan? i’ll wager he’d get more out of HBA, santon, Cabaye etc that Pardew has done this season.

    Beattie
    Alderwield hell yeah!
Martens could be worth a punt he’s out if contract soon si could be cheap!
    Rotonda
Hoping the De jong stories are true would rather him than gomis i know he’s not a CF but would rather bring in a goalscoring ball playing CAM than a hoofball magnet! Gomis is just a french kenwyne jones!
Plus if swansea can turn michu into a goalmachine de jong could well do the same

  • 49 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:23 PM

    Hatems better than Messi,

Danny Graham a better player than Gomis?

I can understand people saying he isn’t the style of player required, but to say he is worse than Graham, who again wouldn’t fit well with how most bloggers want to set up, is madness.

  • 50 nightfa11 // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:23 PM

    Markaccus

problem is if we get him we wont watch much football..it will be long ball to gomis..& hopefully hell score.. so many talented players at the club, yet we dont play football..

with gomis pardew will have an excuse to play his retarded style…so no..i dont want him…not a bad player tho.. under different circumastances id be happy if we signed him…but now while pardews in charge..

  • 51 hotdog // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:24 PM

With Hatem and cabeye back with cisse up front we will score goals. The problem is the defense and if collo goes without adequate replacements we will go down. Simples!!

  • 52 ToonDownSouth // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:24 PM

I love how Pardew gets no credit for the players we’ve signed – unless it’s someone you don’t like, then it’s all Pardew’s fault.

I usually try not to resort to insults, but some of you really are a bunch of utter morons. There’s no other logical explanation.

  • 53 Beattie25 // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:25 PM

Mertens is the best SS/LW in Holland at the moment and would only cost between 8-10 million if rumors are to be believed.

The kid is everything we and Pardew want. Fast, creative, skillful, incredible shot and deadly at free kicks.

They’re both Belgian so bringing one may help us with the other.

  • 54 iamrough // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:26 PM

We should show some ambition and try and get Iker Muniain from Athletic Bilbao. Maybe a bit too ambitious, but we can dream.

    Gervinho St/Winger

    Loic Remy ST/Winger
    Giroud ST

Well who knows… 5th time could bloody well be the charm.

  • 59 Beattie25 // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:29 PM

We should move on from France and aim for the Dutch market.

Similar value and quality and not as many eyes.

Anita will prove to be a bargain if we stay up.

  • 60 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:29 PM

    Munster,

I didn’t say under Keegan specifically, I said since his arrival and pre ashley.

As one example, we could go with Hall and Shepherd and the infamous “geordie women are dogs”

Or maybe Bowyer and Dyer fighting on pitch.

Shearer and Gillespie having a dust up.

    The I’d love it rant.

I could quite easily come up with many more examples if I had the time to waste doing so.

  • 61 boater // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:29 PM

spreadthetoon – For the record, he’s not on the wing. He’s been playing right of centre (mainly).. which whilst not his best position doesn’t fully account for his below-par performances.

I am worried we compound a problem with another problem – it’s classic in football. Once you start signing players and building your team just to get the best out of an out of form player – the team at large will begin to struggle – look at Liverpool with Carroll last season.

  • 62 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:29 PM

Would be unbelievably happy (and prob aroused too) at getting alderweireld and mertens. We coudl get both for €25m euro easy and adding a couple of players for depth in the summer, we could push for honours with that team next season!

  • 66 Munster Mag // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:31 PM

TDS, I was a staunch Pardew fan, but have become alarmed by him. I hope you are also balanced in terms of praise, and can criticise him for some of the pile of rubbish we have seen this season. As for transfers, i dont think Gosling, Amalf, Obertan were good signings. i dont rate santopn hugely either and he hasnt replaced the spanish guy as he cant defend as well. Hopefully will come good – but he looks like neither a winger not a defender at the moment, despite immense energy and very good technique. Also, I’m not certain that Pards dictates transfers. I think its more complex and is based on potential and value for money, rather than what the club needs on a more immediate basis.

  • 67 Beattie25 // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:32 PM

Diego Fabbrini is like Di Baggio, Mertens is like Hazard.

    I’d have them both.

  • 68 Ketsbaia9 // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:32 PM

Gomis is a direct replacement for Ba and Sulejmani is a fast skillful striker who can play on the wings.

It’d be mad not to sign Alderweireld and Sissoko.

  • 69 geordiejamie89 // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:32 PM

This guy looks like a much better signing than Loic Remy. Any player that is talked about to be similar playing style to Drogba, is worth signing, and will definately help, as he’ll always come above Nile Ranger who unfortunately has been given playing time, instead of being released. He is actually scoring in Ligue 1 too, whereas Remy hasn’t been. There’s much more prospect in signing a player that’s scoring goals. All Remy will do for QPR is suck some funds away from the club before leaving on a free transfer.

  • 70 TheToonKing // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:33 PM

I’d love him, he’s a powerhouse, Drogba mark II, but it’s not going to happen.

I agree. Anywhere between €20-25 million would give us a starting 11 that could rival any team in Europe other than Real, Barcand perhaps PSG.

    That is confidence.

Oh well, off to Fifa to make it happen.

  • 73 Spreadthetoon // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:34 PM

Perhaps but then you could have said the same about Ba in the 2nd half of last season when he scored “0″. At least Cisse has scored 6 this season….the reality is though we have Shola who is approaching retirement and that’s it! FFS
We should not be in this position but its always the case when MA is at the helm….just hope they end up turning it round and get the “right” players in. If we don’t we WILL lose HBA and others and I will NEVER forgive the board if that happens as a result of their failings!

What’s interesting too, with Chelsea finally loosing patience with Torres and going for strikers, that final missing link for Chelsea is being filled. Both Manchester clubs will be looking over their shoulder, perhaps not so much for this season, but definately next season.

  • 77 Ketsbaia9 // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:36 PM

Exactly. Gomis is the same age as Ba and is at the peak of his career. He’s more like Ba than Cisse, so he’s the next player we need to go for. Would like to see us sign Alderweireld in time for Saturday’s game.

  • 78 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:36 PM

We were linked with Diego Fabbrini last year apparently!

  • 79 Markaccus // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:36 PM

Nightfa11, maybe there would be long ball in abundance, however, we are now in relegation trouble, so if gomis put 1 out of five long balls in the back of the net, then we’d survive, and sort out our style next season. All about staying up now, regardless of how ugly and boring it is.

  • 80 Hatem's better than Messi // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:37 PM

Graham knows the league, loves the area. Is a Toon fan we need more players who also truly support the club in the dressing room.
They can help express the passion to the foreign lads and southern manager. Sometimes Pardew just doesn’t get it.

  • 81 bemba da // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:37 PM

Iamrough – bilbao only recruit players locally and from the greater basque area, so they wont sell unless there is a suitable replacement definitely available, they cant go and buy a player from anywhere, they have to be sourced locally (basque region), so they more than likely wouldn’t sell at all, the kids local playing for his childhood team so I doubt he’d go either. He’s a class act though!

  • 82 Ketsbaia9 // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:38 PM

I recommneded Gomis over a week ago. Hopefully we’ll get him signed up.

SHOLA AMEOBI has insisted that Newcastle United can still salvage something from their troubled season.

Ameobi returns from suspension this weekend for the crunch clash with Reading at St James’ Park.

And he feels there is still plenty to play for with 16 games to go – not to mention United’s involvement in the Europa League last 32.

In a rallying call for United fans, Ameobi wants his team-mates to stand up and be counted against the Royals.

And in a message to Geordie fans, Ameobi told the Chronicle: “Listen, we’re only halfway through the season.

“For us, we’ve got a lot to play for.

“Sometimes you just need a result to galvanise you.”

“We have suffered with injuries and have had very little luck along the way.”

Ameobi scored the winner against Queens Park Rangers the last time United tasted victory in the Premier League before Christmas.

But said: “We’ve played well at times this season and not got results.

“And if we stick together, we know we can turn this season around.”

Ameobi’s red card against Brighton was one of the low points of the Nigeria international’s career so far.

But while his dismissal coincided with FA Cup agony, he at least can look forward to European football in spring.

And with a clash against Metallist Kharkov to come over two legs next month, United’s man for Europe said: “We’re delighted that we’re in the draw first and foremost.

“Whatever team that came out the hat, we knew we’d have to play well.

“We’re getting down to the business end of the Europa League.

“I didn’t go to the Ukraine when we played Kiev in the Champions League so this will be good.

“I really enjoy playing in European competition.

“Hopefully, we can get a good result at home and take it to their place.”

whilst cisse hasn’t been given the exact job of a winger…hug the touchline and whip in crosses…he has been given the defensive duties of a wide midfielder.

There was a great piece, think the man city game, sky did after which showed when we played the ball long to Ba, cisse, who was on the right on the front lads, was only maybe 10/20 yards ahead of simmo and was about 50/60 yards away from ba and probably 80 yards from goal….difficult to score from there.

I’m not sure Gomis would solve all our problems but he would give us better options. I’d love to see us go for De Jong, and for Bony from Vitesse, but unfortunately I can’t see either happening in Jan if at all.

I also can’t see us getting Alderweild at this moment in time. I think Yanga Mbiwa is probably more realistic at this moment in time.

I really hoped we would have someone in and able to play this weekend, but can’t see it now.

Has Remy been officially announced yet, or is old candleface the only one claiming it is done?

  • 91 boater // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:46 PM

Spreadthetoon – We are in need of firepower. We’ve always had a shite defense – that is not going to change overnight with Centre halve X from club X- despite what people think.

It’s a shame Pardew failed to solve the Ba/Cisse quandary because it;s left supporters assuming we need some left winger/striker hybrid or nothing else will do. We can’t assume Cisse will score the required goals by being moved more central – and definitely can’t sign players on that basis.

We just need the best players we can get – not get bogged down in the tactical problems we have and how they’ll fit. Pardew may be gone long before incoming players remain..

  • 110 boater // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:55 PM

Transfer Sage – I have no doubt that Cisse has been played out of position. But he has also played centrally on several occasions, including the last game against Norwich – which was one of most dreadful attacking performances of the season.

You may be right – he may start banging them in by being moved 30 yds more centrally – or with the return of Cabaye (even though it wasn’t happening earlier this season). Hope so.

  • 111 theroosta // Jan 16, 2013 at 1:56 PM

Caisleanne, unfortunatly our manager hasnt the gumption to give young campbell a shot, and he is missing a trick beacuse he is a real intelligent fast thinking quick striker who defences in the prem dont know anything about and could be a real weapon for us, they know all about the ameobi brothers, yawn!!!

Agree with people on Campbell. Would be very keen to see him getting some game time, and if he is to fulfill his potential it needs to happen sooner rather then later. I’d have him on the bench for Saturday, and give him half an hour at the end.

If signings miraculously materialise I’d ship him straight out on loan to a championship side where he will get competitive game time rather than the U21s.

  • 130 Mister Tuff // Jan 16, 2013 at 2:10 PM

My take on the Collo situation is that he will be away- regardless -and that he has been persuaded to play this weekend and will be away next week. After this weekends game there is a gap of ten days to the Villa game. Having an additional ten days -on top of what progress (if any) we are already making on getting 2 CB’s – should allow the replacements to get “bedded in”. Getting the defensive four working together and understanding each others game is paramount, not doing so could be catastrophic.

AC Milan -having no money – don’t think so – Berlusconi (Mr Bonga Bonga) is the owner of the club and the richest man in Italy.

Lack of ambition – this perception prevails -the ambitions of the club need to be sold to prospective players, in a vision of the future which will tempt them that we are going places. (we may have some difficulty doing this -viz lack of statements of intent from El Gourdo and Dastardly)

After the Remy debacle we need to make sure we do not get caught out again. The fact that a top player has chosen QPR over us does not send out a good signal to other prospectve players. We need half a team of quality signings – this will boost morale, for the blind faith brigade – we are in trouble.

It would appear that Dirty Arry has got a bit of momentum going at QPR.

I agree that there is no 100% anything in football. I also agree that we cannot rely 100% on Cisse either, but we are not in the business of panic buys….or at least I hope note.
Personally I would like to see Jermain Lens or PEA….but whether they do is another thing. I think it is very very harsh to judge Cisse based on being played out of position for the majority of the season……it shows and his first touch is not the best….but if played in the central role I believe something will come good. Btw Boater you cannot use the Norwich game as an example to illustrate Cisse in a poor light. What it did illustrate that Cisse was getting virtually no service until Cabaye came on. We have missed Cabaye and HBA massively so judge Cisse when those two are back. Personally I’m furious at the board and they should sign 2 strikers this window BUT they won’t!

MA knows better than anyone business is business, you take it on the chin you move on no regrets, although im sure he will be looking to do old churchill over in the neat future ha ha, we defo owe that bugger.

Football isnt a firesale situation so MA is not going to win every player we go in for, but we still need to keep pressing, i wont say keep the faith as thats the mackem fanzine, i will say keep believing, as we always tend to do at the toon even though it gets so bloody hard at times, we must for our own sanity!!!!

    The real transfer window scenario.

    Act 1

the three stooges are sat in their office, drinking, smoking farting and playing cards, while the press speculate on who we are looking at buying, what we are willing to pay, when they will arrive on Tyneside for a medical etc. After a few days the prospective transfer falls through due to, player unfit, gone to another club, demanded too much money, his bunions were incurable etc.

At this point one of the stooges calls the press and tells them how much they tried to bring in the player, but it was in the clubs best interest that it did not go ahead. Then back to the card table until it is time to call ther press to trot out an excuse why things did not happen. This way they can let the press do all the work without getting off their arses.

    Act 2 – 1st February

Time to issue a statement saying how hard they tried to recruit at least 55 players to the club , but it was in everyones best interests that all transfer action is delayed until the summer.

Meanwhile back to the card table to count the money they got for, Demba, Colo, Santon, Krul, Ben Arfa.

Williamson and the Ameobi’s must be chuffed as their first team places are secure.

  • 164 the1willy // Jan 16, 2013 at 2:46 PM

Not sure Pep is really the answer… not at the moment at least. He inherited a squad who were fighting for titles, not for survival. He would be decent bet for a long term (5 year :-) ) plan, but not to pull us out of this mess

    Rotonda, with respect.

I disagree, Pardew does not set us up to play longball. I think its a case of low confidence in certain players. Williamson and Simpson the most knocking it long, not wanting the ball for very long. Santon sometimes, still has alot to learn. Its been noticed and rectified by Pardew. Their passing it about now.

Poor performances from our midfielders also low on confidence and moral, not showing for the ball.

The chopping and changing of the squad because of injuries and suspensions has resulted in no rhythm being found. Poor distribution of the ball. No consistent starting 11. Lack of quality in depth, playing youngsters.

Lots of factors to take into account. I dont believe it’s Pardew actually setting us up to play longball.

Think Toon Prodigy could have a point. I don’t think there is a wrong or right answer, but it is certainly true that Krul, Simpson, and Williamson tend to hoof it rather a lot. Mind you, if the current other option is to pass it to Mr T so he can do a few turns just outside the 18 yard box or pass it to anyone not wearing a toon shirt, I’m not sure we can blame them :-O

Feeling sick thinking about that predicament. Jonas is bad enough.

However i would like to declare that i am looking forward to seeing what our new international full back can do, it will be so refreshing seeing a proper footballer in that position.

I think this is what goes on in the dressing room.
Ap – ‘Right lads, I want you to play the passing game today you all got that!’

Simpson thinks ‘I know all about that, I remember this bloke called David from my Man U days’ – then tries 50yrd pinpoint cross field passes.
Santon thinks ‘Ah so he wants me to pass people’ and tries running the entire length of the field every time the ball comes to him.
Krul and Williamson think ‘Ah, the passsing game, we know that’ and decide to (by)pass the entire midfield.
Colo understands perfectly, but then decides to begger off to Argentina

My belief is when we get a few new faces in and get our first 11 consistently playing regularly together again. We will be ok. Everything will improve, as will the football we are witnessing.

The kids will be dropped back to the reserves, a few new faces in this window will give us that quality in depth we were robbed of in the summer.

And our bench will be a hell of alot stronger.

This window is very very important, we need these players in asap. Like now. 2 weeks left, This window will define the rest of our season.

Setting up a long ball team because of the signings you mentioned? Every single one of those players loves the ball at thier feet and on the green stuff, not in the clouds. Now if you had mentioned Willo and Simmo……..
To mention Cabaye, Marveaux, Anita and Ben Arfa as long ball hoofers just shows what a retard you are.

    TDS

regarding the transfers and who gets credit

i think its fair to say MA wanted to put in place mr rat face wise to be the person to look over the signings coming into the club, im not 100% but i think carr was imployed around that time too, i think we still buy players the way ashley wanted , but now we have saved 1mil a year by sacking wise, and letting DL do that job

i never hear of pardew going to france spying on players i never see much wrote about him scouting other teams out before matches

i dont think pardew has the control he would have you believe he has at the club, i think he is told the players he is working with and that is it,,

if pardew had control over who he wanted in the club, i think the first player he would buy would be a CB, we have needed one since last year, wlliamson was not good enough then and he isnt now,, and i would go as far to say i would have been happy to keep simpson until the end of the season if it ment we had a quality CB as i think we have options for RB

the one player i know carr had nothing to do with was obertan, i read an interview from him and he said he had not done any scouting on obertan, i think he new back then that he was shite,, so take you pick DL or AP one of those bought obertan

TS said earlier we need to replace to guys at our club,

DL he is simply not good at his job in the footballing world,

AP, he is out of touch with modern football and how it has moved on since he played,, he has quoted many times he went to learn from HM at chelsea,, id love to see where and what he learned from him,

i have no respect for the guy, he has got us in 16th place in the leauge and he still sugar coats things, “that performance goes a long way to repay the traviling fans at the brighton game” that performance was shite, other than obertans snap shot i dont remember us creating much,,, filling us full of crap again,,
roll on reading,, we will get beat and hopefully he will be sacked fingers crossed

For the record, I saw Gomis here against Athletic Bilbao a few weeks ago, and he ain’t ‘pacy’. he may have had blistering pace a few years ago, but then again so did I. he does not look to me the sort of player who will get us goals like we need, he loses the ball easily and just shrugs his shoulders, I fear the premier league may be a step too far for him. His first touch is not great, and he appears lazy. Not for me chaps. Danny Graham is a better option as he is DOING it in the premier league and can only get better.

The bozo’s have fiddled while Rome burned, and if they dont stop the rot and rebuild the squad to a competitive level, I fear the worst. Munster,

    Thanks.

I dont mind a bit of constructive criticism. Aslong as it’s constructive. I don’t feel there is any need for any calling at all. I don’t do it personally.

I think i just felt at the time you didn’t really no my beliefs so it was uncalled for.

I hope we can get along. Where all here for the same reason at the end of the day.

Im regards to Pardew, i don’t think he is the best manager out there i agree. I agree he has made mistakes. The points i raise are normally from him recieving stick for things that have nothing to do with him. Im not under the belief like some that a change of manager is the way forward right now. Im not in the blame everything on Pardew brigade, im in the blame the board brigade for the lack of summer activity.

But aye, Pardew could of changed things, done things different. Sure. Some things have just not worked out.

But I believe the main problems at the club are the board and their mad gambles. I feel Pardew has been placed under enormous amounts of pressure because of last summer. He deserved the backing after last seasons finish.

in mean time, our best player said he will leave as bcs no ambitious, our captain wants go home bcs had a clash with our idiotic manager, Simmo not yet sold and will leave for free in May…
There is no 1 official statement from club about transfer activities..
Derek LLambias- will be our undertaker

    Santon03:
Nice to see you are taking this seriously (Messi FFS)…..We dont have to go in for world record transfers to find a ‘proven ‘ goalscorer. I am referring to achievable and ‘gettable’ targets such as Danny Graham for one, Anelka for two, Drogba for three, (these 2 are gonna be offloaded as their club is restructuring the wage bill), Odemwingie is another. Quit it with the FIFA man and have a look at the real world.

  • 244 Santon03 // Jan 16, 2013 at 5:13 PM

Someone posted here before that AP didn’t plan for hoofballs tactic, it is caused by players didn’t have confidence to play short passes, I forgot who.
If AP didn’t plan to play like that, then he should be screaming to the players not to play like that and the players wouldn’t say things about his tactics in interviews.

  • 245 Mister Tuff // Jan 16, 2013 at 5:13 PM

spreadthetoon @227 – agree that Belhanda would e a good buy -apparently Montpellier are after £12 million for him -this will probably put the Toon off. He’s away at ACON at the moment as well.

If we lose to reading at home the only 1 we are really missing then is benny, but no doubt pardew will give it the usual BS line. For me he should have gone already and given someone else a chance in the window who players may want to come and play ” football ” not hoof ball for.

it’s bad enough losing when you’re playing decent football but to keep losing while playing sunday pub stuff is beyond the pale

  • 249 the1willy // Jan 16, 2013 at 5:19 PM

Well, that’s it, another day and no concrete news about anything. I’m hoping (but sadly not very convinced) that we’ll suddenly present two or three players no one had linked us with… A la ‘Cabaye’ and ‘Cisse’ (and hopefully of the same quality), a ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ type transaction.

  • 250 Santon03 // Jan 16, 2013 at 5:20 PM

the players you mentioned are mostly 30+years old, I don’t know about the club policy for players age and I think those players earn more than Remy at QPR maybe not Graham (i’m not sure Graham is in proven goalscorer category).

  • 251 NUFC FOR SALE // Jan 16, 2013 at 5:20 PM

    GAZ09 exactly.

In fact I don’t think we’ll have the players we have.

Collicini will be away saving 60 k per week.

I bet we sell Krul and Santon in this window and replace with cheaper options.

We will get relegated, Ashley will pick up 25million parachute payment, sell Cabaye, Ben Arfa, Cisse, Tiote and happily count the tens of millions not caring a less that they are a championship club once again.

I wouldn’t even bother reading any transfer speculation as I guarantee we’ll sign nobody.

  • 252 Spreadthetoon // Jan 16, 2013 at 5:22 PM

If NUFC are unwilling to pay £12m for a decent winger/ striker…then we do not deserve to be in the premiership………….tbf NUFC should have a war chest of about £50m…..with AC monies and little activity in recent transfer mkts and HUGE addition TV revenues next season and rest of Europe football clubs really struggling to balance the books……tell ya what if I had £12m I’d buy him and rent him out to MAs cos’ him and Dekka r a right pair of f’ing rent boys!!! HAHA LOL

  • 253 the1willy // Jan 16, 2013 at 5:23 PM

Some final food for thought. There are arguments about AP using hoofball tactics.
Now, as I see it, both sides seem to have valid points.
The ‘if he wanted to play hoofball why has he signed Cabaye, Ben Arfa etc’ side and the ‘Just look at the stats and watch the matches side.
As of yet, I’m on the fence, but I leave you with two questions:
1: If AP doesn’t want to play hoofball, why isn’t he beating Krul/Williamson(Simpson with a long and heavy stick.
2: Was AP actually all that involved in the signing of aforementioned silky skilled passers, or were these deals done above his head? – After all he has come out several times saying he’d love Carroll back.
    Just thoughts

Yes we should have changed the manager, I think everything will be much better. Some might argue that it isn’t wise to change manager in mid season, but we have done it before with Glenn Roeder. He took over in Feb, we were in relegation zone and finished 7th.

  • 255 GAZ09 // Jan 16, 2013 at 5:25 PM

I dont think we will get relegated, we have just enough quality to avoid that and a few other teams around us are a little weaker, i do feel though next year even with us still in the Prem there will be a mass exodus of players leaving.

  • 256 Lynxie // Jan 16, 2013 at 5:26 PM

    Toon Mauritius @ 124:
    perfect solution my friend.
Llorente is taylor made for the Premier league, quick, strong, good target man, brave, good in the air and scores goals. I have seen him myself dozens of times and he is a class above. Athletic Bilbao no longer want him, as he is letting his contract run down and has had major bust up with the lunatic of a manager they have here. The manager (Bielsa -raving headcase) continues to leave him on the bench despite the team struggling for goals, and then repeatedly puts him on for the last 2 or 3 minutes of games simply to allow the stadium to booo him (excellent man mangement skills NOT). And llorente is simply playing a waiting game. Give this guy a first team shirt and he will show everyone what point he has to prove. Juventus only offering 3.3 million? Lets do a QPR on them………..

  • 260 the1willy // Jan 16, 2013 at 5:29 PM

Llorente would also be fantastic, on his day he’s unstoppable. MA approach
“Remy your my bitch. You’ll be playing in EL this year….not sure bout’ next year, but basically you work for me, you’re no different from my SD employees……ya get me and don’t you forget it….BIAAAATCH”

  • 265 Lynxie // Jan 16, 2013 at 5:33 PM

Now signing Drogba would satisfy me. That would be a real coup. Rather than bringing in Harewood or Shefki Kuqi, this would do the job. Pardew is a well documented admirer, and this guy would revel at SJP with the hero worship etc. If he keeps us up, and undoes all the woeful management and board decisions of this season, he will be forever loved. He loves a challenge, and for me, this is the biggest one going, playing and surviving (with a constantly depleting squad) in the toughest league in the world.

  • 266 GAZ09 // Jan 16, 2013 at 5:34 PM

Nothing is gonna change until Ashley and he’s clowns get out of the club, we cant even sack pardew because no other manager in their right mind is going to be a yes man.
Its not even worth talking about who we need to sign and who would be good in other postions, we’re 16days into the window and cant even sign a CB that we’ve needed for god knows how long.

  • 267 the1willy // Jan 16, 2013 at 5:34 PM

Apparently Graham wants to move back to the North East. Squad player?
I’m not really sure how good he is, but I know he’d certainly give 100%
Perhaps he’d be like Carroll, excell playing infront of his home town crowd, but not able to perform quite as well anywhere else.

  • 268 Mister Tuff // Jan 16, 2013 at 5:35 PM

spreadthetoon – agree that a war chest of cash should be available -I suspect it probably is. I’m not so sure about the Andy Carroll monies though.

the kindest thing to call pardew is an enigma because as you say the things he does just don’t add up at all.

Players leaving and wanting to leave left, right and centre and 2 wins in 17 usually means one thing, the manager shouldn’t be the manager. The players aren’t fighting for him or agreeing with the style.

  • 273 Rake // Jan 16, 2013 at 5:35 PM

Hope we have a positive window on and off the pitch……….patience is running thin with MA/DL but also AP is not beyond reproach for the awful stuff that has been served up. Now Cabaye is back and others on their way….I do not see AP having any excuses left. Carroll IMO would be a major backward step and prove beyond doubt that he is no better than big Sam! • 286 the1willy // Jan 16, 2013 at 5:43 PM

How things (don’t) work in the NUFC system.
Graham Carr spots talented players and finds out about clauses in their contracts etc.
He tells the board, they then see if they can sign the player or not (generally not).
The talented player, if signed, is then sent to AP so he can be incorportated into our way of play.
Now, I think the problem sometimes may be in what Carr thinks is a great player for the way we play, and how AP wants to play. Again, just a thought

  • 298 Lynxie // Jan 16, 2013 at 5:52 PM

    I have a theory.
It is that Graham Carr has been advised to look for
    a) players in the last year (or so) of their contract.
    b) a certain age group (19-25) with ‘sell-on’ value.
    c) talented players with ‘potential’ who are on on low wages.
This is all very well searching for what YOU WANT, but when you take your eye off what IS NEEDED, you have problems. Hence we are soon gonna be up the creek without a goalscorer or central defender.

Hope the club are working hard for these targets still. All I know is we’ve played one game without by far our top scorer and aren’t far off playing our second game. For me the squad is currently weaker with the loss of Ba and signing of Debuchy. If we bring in a replacement for him and a cb I will think otherwise but we are shockingly short on cover for a team that finished 5th. Imagine if colo and cisse get injured…. It’s not only his excuses that bug me, but also the way he tries to make positives out of negatives all the time. But I don’t know what pressure he has so I don’t want to be too judgemental

NOT.
But when Taylor and Ben Arfa are fit, it will be like having two new signings. And that Gosling lad is gonna be some player. And did you know that Xisco was brilliant for the Spain U-21′s……….. And of course Ranger has potential…… so its not all bad news

Nowt wrong with discussing players you would like us to sign though, thats just discussion, but to say why aren’t we signing some player because another club is stalling with the undertone that whoever is in charge is clueless, this is what i think is a bit pointless really

Im sure he’s a great player, ive not watched him, but god knows what reasons are stopping our scouts/owners/manager from trying to sign and if we haven’t even tried already

I think the club need to start thinking about getting players on loan with option to buy, this window is too short especially with the way we negotiate and I don’t think many clubs want to sell their main players in the middle of season.

yes that one too. how can we see the positives if the negatives were way way more. I don’t think there is any pressure on him, winning 2 out of 17 and still in charge is the proof.

Throughout this country we had some classy Geordie footballers ..just 10 years back ..I tried to put a Geordie Team together yesterday, current player’s ..and struggled for name’s

My take on this is ..because we are so transfixed on Continental Talent we cant see what’s in front of us ..to the detriment of young British players coming through ..this results in no English/top British players ..and a very poor England team.

Where’s all the Geordie talent that we were renowned for producing ?

  • 351 Spreadthetoon // Jan 16, 2013 at 6:52 PM

It’s simple…..any British player is way over priced. For example Michu £2m….Tom Ince quoted @ £10m and the lads never even played at a top division anywhere. It’s not just Geordie talent…..you’d struggle as the National mgr……most prem teams have int’l players who are cheaper and in many cases better! So our youth players do not even get the opportunity to play in the countries top flight!

  • 352 jimmysmith // Jan 16, 2013 at 6:56 PM

This Colo situation is absurd. You can’t walk out on a club if you have allowed yourself to become a contracted and valuable asset. San Lorenzo need to buy him for a fair price if that’s what he wants, perhaps even financed by Colo himself. That is the only ethical option unless the situation is one of great personal need then Newcastle may grant him compassionate leave but certainly not to continue his career at his hometown club unless a loan deal is struck. And if the press are to be believed San Lorenzo are behaving in an appallingly self serving and opportunistic manner and possibly even the player himself.

Let’s hope Adam Campbell turns out to be the start of something ..We do have Andy Carroll out there Who Else though ? Carrick, ?..see Im scraping around …! you right about young British talent ..to expensive to the detriment of the National side in the long run.as young players are missing out on team places and opportunity

We go look for cheaper continental imports and it stops a young British players progress and place in the team.

Concentrating on good young Geordie talent is the best thing we could do at Newcastle .

Evening Proud , How are you ?

  • 361 p // Jan 16, 2013 at 7:09 PM

The Remy thing reminds me of Andy Carroll…

The toon was absolutely the place for this guy to rebuild his career. Amongst compatriots, less pressure with Cisse as the number 9 etc.

Same as Andy, it was best for both Newcastle and him if he stayed in the long run.

But as normal, some desperate manager/chairman insanely offers ridiculous money.

For Remi’s part a 4 and half year deal at what is likely to be worth over $20m would set him up nicely for life so long as he does not blow too much of it on whores and at the casino.

As normal, hard nosed Mike is under control – who would turn down $35m for Andy Carroll or who would commit $30m (fees + wages) for a who confessed he nearly quit football in November and has hardly played this season?

Alas, there is always a Daglish or Arry willing to role the dice with someone else’s dosh and we should not get into that game.

However, we really need to get our s$%# and sign one of the many other attractive fish in the sea.

The problem for us fans is that we never know whether they are calmly and systematically are executing a series of well planned out moves or whether they are desperately flapping around like headless chickens trying to get a bargain basement deal not plan A is out of the window.

  • 362 89Norcal // Jan 16, 2013 at 7:09 PM

Was saying this for months as I have West ham mates
    _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

big mal (West Ham United): Arrived in Manchester early for our replay tonight and passing some time trawling through the Teamtalk posts. Must say I was staggered that Ashley gave the Peardrop an 8 year contract! You are probably beginning to understand now how he got this name.

Rather than let him risk money with panic buys on unrealistic contracts in this window you might be better to pay him off in the summer or as soon as you are safe and start again.

You have to ask yourselves why so many of your best players want out? He obviously has some ability but as soon as he gets a few results under his belt at a new club he starts drinking his own bathwater again. The geezer loves himself too much and never seems to hold his hand up when results go against him.

I am sure many of you are now questioning his methods. It’s only a matter of time now before the majority of NUFC turn on him. It beginning to look like West Ham all over again. Ashley must regret that he did not stick with Hughton because you could have had your own version of David Moyes.

I think Pardew has proved to be so-so.

Judging him on speculation like Krul and Santon may be sold to AC Milan is a folly.

Judge him on what has happened. He has been dealt a tough hand this year and failed. Last year, fortune was good to him and he did pretty well but IMO should have done better.

This to me suggests he is just okay. I think he is not better than Hughton. I really like Hughton – a real gentleman – and if you were going to replace him do it with someone special. Pardew is not special.

Oh well, yet another name we’re supposedly interested, we being a club which supposedly has/ had a strategy worked out, a club that had done its homeworkk on its targets!

Here we are, nearly at the end of the first half of the window and yes, we’ve got Debuchy BUT, he was a summer target wasn’t he? What are they playing at, building in a six month delay between scouting and signing?

We supposedly had a go for Remy – two weeks in to the window when Ba left in the first. Anybody could see that he was going and what any sensible club would have a replacement lined up, fee and terms agreed ala Liverpool with Sturrridge.

Do these people have any clue at all? The only sensible thing they’ve said about their transfer strategy is that everything’s under wraps till the deal’s announced. Now what do we see? Names bandied about left right and centre and what happens to those supposed targets? They go elswhere of course.

We here words like ‘considering putting a bid in in a couple of days’ or ‘we looked at him months ago’ why don’t they just cut the crap and get these guys signed up before the whole world and its mother knows we’re after them.

I’m convinced that as Ashley’s not sacked Llambais for his abysmal stewardship of Newcastle United, then he must accept it and the likelihood of relegation for the second time in four years.

    It just beggars belief!

  • 385 ToonDownSouth // Jan 16, 2013 at 7:28 PM

Ben Arfa said about 3 days ago that he has a fantastic relationship with Pardew, and that if he wants to leave it will be down to the owners lack of ambition.

Or is that not relevant because it’s not a comment calling Pardew immature names?

I’m as unhappy with Pardew as anyone, but seriously, screw your heads back on because some of the stuff that people on here are coming out with is ridiculous.

  • 386 p // Jan 16, 2013 at 7:28 PM

For sure, I am not liking some of the people we are being linked with. But I also very much liking some others. That said, is there any truth in it?

Where a chairman comes out and says Newcastle have bid, it is likely true but not certain. Everything out should definitely be taken with a pinch of salt.

lesh – in fairness, Pardew did say in an interview that many players would wait until the of the transfer window before committing themselves to one team or another.

Of course that suggests we are waiting on people who are waiting for something better to come along. In an ideal world you want players like Debuchy who did not want to go anywhere else but the reality is that is not how many available players think. They are all thinking about career, pay packet etc.

This is all very distressing for us fans but judging I guess should take place on Feb 1st.

I do think there will be backlash if the club fail this time and rightly so!

Online Guy@ 386….the talent is still there…the problem is the coaching at Newcastle

Once the players get to a certain age the coaches somehow seem to coach the natural talent out of the young players.

They also seem to do their best in making them injury prone as well.

The best thing Adam Campbell could do for his career progression is to leave the club.

My nephew is a promising RB at 15 years old and has just turned down the chance to sign for Newcastle in preference to Southampton.

    Better opportunities, coaching etc.

Yes, I was with everyone in terms of passing on Remy, but problem is we were not even in the ball park in terms of our wage offer.

I’m just saying we have established ourselves as players in the lower-to-mid range (tops) market. That’s fine as long we we don’t throw a fit if we’ve never heard of our prospects. that should be expected.

  • 405 Den123 // Jan 16, 2013 at 8:01 PM

I can’t see the point of trying to get players like Gomis and de Jong – they’re never going to accept 40 grand a week wages when they can get more elsewhere. Guaranteed our next striker will be someone most of us haven’t heard of which worked in the case of Cisse but can that happen again?

  • 406 Jonny // Jan 16, 2013 at 8:02 PM

Gomis is hands down one of the worst finishers in europe, bout as good as kenwyne jones. Needs 8 chances for a goal, watched a lot of him in champs league. Remy would have fit in perfectly in that wide position unfortunately. Need a LW/CF player.

  • 409 p // Jan 16, 2013 at 8:08 PM

I think all this anti-Ashley stuff is thick headed.

It’s in his interest for the club to do well on the field.

The way he has chosen to do that is with an Arsenal type model.

Clearly, teams like Chelsea, Man City and QPR are not profitable. Mike has decided that he will run Newcastle as a sustainable business and not sink an endless amount of his personal fortune in to it. His choice and who is to say that will work anyway.

He took a club in financial straits and has made us a viable business.

Yes, there has been some mistakes and I don’t think MA is a hero or anything but this idea that he is just in it to extract as much value from the club as possible is just pigheadedness. It’s not easy trying to make Newcastle sustainably successful but I do believe he is trying his best.

  • 412 steinhof // Jan 16, 2013 at 8:16 PM

Problem with Ashley trying to emulate Arsenal is that they have won nothing for years and can’t keep their best players so they’re just like a slightly better version of us. On a more positive note, we can go up a place if Chelsea stick another couple past Soton.

Actually would swap new signings for Pardew being Sacked in the next week. If we spent all our budget in putting a package together to recruit Lauren Blanc or Martinez, then that money would be well spent.

It will not matter who is recruited or who is on the pitch the football served up will be limited and lifeless until Padick is binned.

For me transfers currently are irrelevant as long as Pardope is in charge. The man in a loser.

Would be interesting if he was sacked after the Reading game whether Collo would all of a sudden fancy staying on? If we do lose against Reading he must go, or else Ashley is resigning everyone to the championship.

    Disgraceful incompetency from Fatty.

Your right teams like Chelsea, City, and QPR are not profitable but their owners are in the game to win trophies or at least compete to try and do that. If Ashley wants a profit like business why don’t he just stick to he’s crappy sport stores. In the end its gonna bite him in the ass, no or very little investment is going to make the few star players will do have end up leaving. We are on the brink of having a great team but that tight stubborn bastard doesn’t see that.

I hope we’re going after Jeremain Lens still, he’s essentially Remy without the slip in form and cheaper as well. Plays as a striker or winger. Scores double digits in goals, and makes a few assists as season.

Would probably make more as a winger, I think PSV used him as a striker for some time.

Maybe this Remy incident has made the club shut up shop completely in regards to transfers. Don’t think we will hear anything now until the deal or deals are done and dusted. What Redknapp done was a big slap in the face. I hope it comes back to haunt him. 3 times that c..t has stitched us up in Modric, Ba and now Remy. I wouldn’t blame NUFC if this is the case and they just keep everything 100% quiet from now on.

    Offkey – seriously?

Here you go for what we can gather…

Toon were about to sign him offering a sensible package and an opportunity to resurrect his career. He was due on Sunday for a medical.

QPR desperados then offered him a 20m package over 4.5 years and which was an offer he could not refuse.

I should go back to not reading papers or talking to anyone for another 15 days.

  • 442 89Norcal // Jan 16, 2013 at 9:13 PM

    Offkey

We had agreed on an 8m deal with Marseilles a few days ago, and were setting up a medical for Remy when Tony Fernandes and QPR swooped in with double our wage offer just a day or two after Redknapp said Remy didn’t want to go to QPR.

Remy mulled over it for a night and went to QPR for the Medical yesterday or day before, and signed officially today.

Dries Mertens is a superb talent, ideal for our team. Looking at the French leagues we must be looking at Romain Alessandrini.
23 year old left forward, absolutely quality similar mould and style to Shaqiri but fast and left sided. Technically superb strong both feet skilful quick and 7 goals and 5 assists this season.
Dimitri Payet is another option, right footed but good on the left. 7 goals and 7 assists this season. Both would be no more than £8m, although I think Alessandrini would be an easier bet.

Also explained that on the transfer front NOBODY at the club has any idea and its very much hush hush. So as for believing bloggers and articles go im remaining optimistic as always but not believing a word.

I don’t think it’s nice to want someone to lose their job and haven’t called for AP’s heed but it won’t be lookin good for him if we don’t get at least 4 points in the next 2 games.
The only problem is who of any decent caliber would even come close to wanting the job???
Amazing after ending up in 5th last season(albeit with a lot of luck)that we’ve managed the whole club so poorly since…..only in the Toon.No wait Leeds, Portsmouth,Rangers,Forest with their history
Please could someone with a bita cash just come n buy us,I don’t think we need a sugar daddy as the club is in good standings if we only had a football person at the helm and a football CEO it’d make such a difference.
Would’ve been great if some former players had got together and bought us instead of sniffing their cash away

479 I think we need a decent CEO. My guess is that Derek Lambias is the one person out of his depth.

MA despite what people think is no one’s fool and wants to do well but in a self sustaining way.

Pardew is mediocre and we can do a lot better.

Lambias on the other hand seems like a tool and not qualified for the job.

Anyone seen the latest quotes from San Lorenzo?

If its a case of colo wants to play back at home in Argentina at the club his dad works for then he can swivel. We aren’t letting go of a defender what would cost about 8 million to replace all because he is homesick. If he has family issues then fair enough but I’m getting sick of San Lorenzo trying to gain from this.

Tell you what ed it takes some scrolling down on a phone now the site has changed. Dreading the inevitable 1000 comment article when something big happens

Letting Collo go and gettin someone untested or less skilled in the PL to play alongside “Willo the ball is hot” is just asking for trouble.
I’d be amazed if hes let go for nothing as MA like any other owner wants some money for their investments.
Chris Samba even though over the age at the toon would be a good bet although he’d probably cost a bundle :-(
Boumsong,O’Brien,Bramble just some of the Willo type quality we’ve got used to here

My take on the Collo situation is that they have persuaded him to stay for the Reading game -thereafter there is a 10 day gap until the Villa game. The extra days on top of what the board should have been doing behind the scenes up to now -ie 2 x CB’s – should enable the arrival of the replacements. This will allow the “new” back four to get a bit of time in to train together and get to know each other games -a bit.

  • 490 bollance // Jan 16, 2013 at 10:25 PM

So Alf is the new ITK. Can we unleash onlineguy on him when he gets it wrong?

Gomis too old. But are we getting a bit desperate with everything going wrong this season?

Most likely see a 23-24 year old with pace and promise come through the door. Our current predicament probably means we will be paying top dollar. Sadly we are in a very weak bargaining position.

Also Cisse on the wing highlighted his limitations in linking up play. Cisse is the man to put the ball in the net and only that so the new striker needs to have some creativity about him.

Or gamble by playing French euro 2012 system with Cisse upfront and cabaye advanced? Meaning we don’t buy a striker and try to make it to the end of the season only getting the centre back we need.

  • 491 bollance // Jan 16, 2013 at 10:28 PM

Not sure it has been mentioned??

Qpr have just bought an out of form striker who went there for the £. If he fires blanks and sends them down he walks away for free and gets a huge payday. Genius!!

  • 495 bollance // Jan 16, 2013 at 10:47 PM

    P

Harry wins because he gets sacked, big pay off. Reputation not too badly affected because it was a tough job. Then he picks up the free transfers for his new club. At the same time taking a load of bung. Lets just prey his new club is not nufc. Ideally pards has turned the ship and continue making progress like last season.

    Nick

Don’t want to work for Ashley but if we can’t get a striker then having cabaye put things on a plate for Cisse could work? Sadly cisse’s game is finishing and finishing alone. So he needs to be in the box as much as possible. If we can make that happen he will get goals.

Pards has already mentioned playing Yo more advanced so its got to be an option. Dunno why we don’t play HBA in the hole. Sort of 4-4-1-1 or 4-2-2-1.

Bollance- Welcome back. Cabaye would be superb in an advanced position behind Cisse as his range of passing is so good. Should Coloccini go then Cabaye would be my choice as Captain. In any event i would like to see Cabaye pushed forward into an attacking midfield link up with Cisse. Your absolutely right on not seeking to match QPR ‘s desperation offer. It’s good to see Brad Inman doing so well on loan.
TDS – R Heights is a master of the preconception and the wish promoting the thought type of post. When he’s not so bitter and cynical he can display some understanding of football but every passing day it appears more remote.
Mr Tuff- I think you could well be right in your train of thought on Coloccini and replacement time for CB’s.

Bollance – I agree entirely. The service to Cisse at times has been bordering on suicide. We all know he isn’t a physical player who wins it in the air yet some of the passes we make to him have been crazy. I think if we surround him with support from the likes of cabaye, ben arfa and anita he will do great. He has missed a few easier chances over the season shall we say but i think if the team get their act together and give him some good service he is bound to knock a few in. I do like the sound of cabaye helping cisse out up top but i would also like to see marveaux and ben arfa on either side of him and tiote, cabaye and anita behind. We’ve got two full backs to provide us width and I’ve grown frustrated with seeing one man in the box and little support from anyone else. Havent watched much french football so havent seen cabaye in his forward role but i’ve heard he looks a different player.

  • 506 ToonDownSouth // Jan 16, 2013 at 11:14 PM

    catchy

I think you got the wrong end of my post – I don’t believe Pardew has any say whatsoever on incoming signings, although there’s the odd exception. Ba was a player Pardew wanted, and seeing as he was on the cheap the club was happy to take a gamble.

My point was that there are plenty of reasons to moan about Pardew – but us being linked with an average player is not one of them!

  • 507 Mister Tuff // Jan 16, 2013 at 11:17 PM

Ian Toon evening- ah Brother Ian —— no I’ll leave that out tonight.
The whole Collo story is very fishy indeed , I think he was going to be away regardless and do a “Tevez” but he has been persuaded to stay for the Reading game -otherwise we would really be in the claggy. With him going we really need somebody to replace him and also someone to replace Willo and Saylor – if they have been working behind the scenes you would imagine that they have got at least one CB earmarked/spoken to already -they have known the potential for this situation (Collo) so if they are up to speed they should have sorted out a further CB. Lets hope so -was looking at the league table earlier on – we have the fourth worst defence for goals against.

  • 511 Newcastle for alltid // Jan 16, 2013 at 11:23 PM

I see a lot of people with, I’m afraid, too high expectations. At the moment I think we’re in a far too dangerous league position to really tempt any of the top European youngsters. Mentioned players like Siem De Jong, Allesandrini, Aubameyang, Mertens, Sissoko etc. are really promising youngsters with potentialy big futures. I think a lot of effort has to be put into pursuading them to join us, as we can’t really compete if other clubs of a respectable size comes in and shows interest. Last season was different, and that’s why we should have spent more money last summer to clinch deals as they would have known we finished fifth and were one of the big English teams. They will probably hear about our interest, check out our league position, and not being willing to participate in a race against relegation when they have offers from other clubs.

I’m not trying to be overly negative, all I’m saying is that people should take our position into account, be realistic, and not be dissapointed if we don’t sign any big, up-and-coming names. Graham Carr is not the only scout in Europe watching them, mind.

  • 512 bollance // Jan 16, 2013 at 11:32 PM

Good evening. Never left, been reading the posts every day with great interest.

With cabaye on pitch vs Norwich we looked like we could create something. Would be interesting to see the stats with and without cabaye in the team. Although admittedly he was out of soughts at start of season. We have signed his best mate now so he should be happier.

Havent seen Inman in action for crewe but have followed results. He is scoring and they are winning. Same we can’t get Campbell off to league 1 sometime soon. That is their level for now. Next season championship then following 1st team for us.

  • 514 p // Jan 16, 2013 at 11:34 PM

@506 not sure it quite works like that.

A lot will see Newcastle as a fairly big club, artificially low in the league.

I imagine anyone signing would be on a relegation release clauses now – not that they will leave for free but, can go if a fee of X is received a bit like Ba’s.

Not everyone can attract the likes of Man Utd and even if they did, they would not get many starts initially.

For sure we can not compete with Arsenal, Chelsea, the two Manchester clubs and even Liverpool and Tottenham

  • 515 nightfa11 // Jan 16, 2013 at 11:40 PM

problem with cisse is that we never keep possession..we never make more then 5 passes before players pass it to cisse… just panic kicks up front & hopefully cisse will win the ball and smash it in? wtf?

  • 516 p // Jan 16, 2013 at 11:43 PM

510, that’s right, it seems to be based on hope than a clear game plan

High ball up to Cisse before he can find space (and is closely marked) and the defender wins a header away or forces Cisse to pass back at which point there is no creativity or options to score.

  • 517 Newcastle for alltid // Jan 16, 2013 at 11:51 PM

    @509

I know players will think of Newcastle as a rather big club, strangely positioned where we are as of now. My point was that we’re in a relegation battle of sorts, and that may scare players away. But as you say, relegation clauses will be put in there.

Take Mertens as an example. He’s got a great goal-to-game ratio, and is surely watched by a lot of clubs. I’m not saying that Man City and Real will go after him now. But even, say, 6th placed German, Spanish and Italian teams may tempt him more right now, partially because of their league position and because we won’t be able to outspend them when it comes to wages.

Money is a factor, and the fact is that quite a few clubs are able to outspend us. And we’ve seen lately that money is the primary factor for a lot of players. The combination league position and finances are a big challenge for us right now to attract players, which is why I’m sceptic, though not ruling completely out, as to us attracting top European talent right now. I think a working suitable strategy right now would be moving for unsettled players with talent, as we did with Ben Arfa.

This is just speculation though, which comes from me being as impatient as he rest of you all for something to happen. :)

  • 518 Sazzer // Jan 16, 2013 at 11:53 PM

People are so shortsighted. And a lot of youngsters named play for teams that are not going to win anything or like De Jong won their league and ready to take the next stestep. The will get more money, more playing time and play in better league. And if they do well they can go to bigger club when they are more ready. Big stadium, great fans, great teammate .el

  • 519 p // Jan 17, 2013 at 12:01 AM

I think we will pay decent wages for the right player. Just not 90K a week.

40K a week + bonuses, protected by a relegation clause and the the opportunity to play in the premier league in front of 50,000 alongside some genuine class like Cabaye and Ben Arfa would be a draw for a lot of decent talent you would have thought.

Pardew also said that United’s ongoing work in the transfer market was not a sign of them being “negligent”. He said: “We’ve done our homework. You can’t force someone to agree a contract, you can only put your best case forward and your best offer forward and go from there.”

He explained that the delay any deals was probably down to the player waiting to see if other options emerged.

He said: “If you put yourself in the position of the agent and you have a player that is desirable, and a really good club comes in and a lesser side comes in as well, you sometimes have the impression, because of the interest and the media coverage, that an even bigger one will come in for your player. So why sign early? Even if terms have been agreed, they are waiting to see if a more attractive project becomes available. No matter what finance you throw at the deal, sometimes everybody just wants to sit and wait.”
