Newcastle were interested in Danny Graham while he was still at Watford eighteen months ago, but decided not to being the Gateshead-born striker to Newcastle.
Danny Graham – Newcastle interested?
And with Danny not getting too many starts at Swansea these days, it seems he’s looking for a move in the January transfer window, but the news is that Newcastle don’t think his style of play is what they want in January. He is a big man up front, and if we are to continue to put high balls into the box – maybe he would be the right kind of striker?
Of course beggars cannot be choosers, and we’ve already missed out on our top striker target – Loic Remy of Marseilles, who surprised everybody by plumping for QPR over Newcastle.
But the 27-year-old has started only 10 league games under new Swansea manager Michael Laudrup this season – with the Spaniard Michu now being the first choice striker.
Danny may get hs wish to move back to the north-east with Sunderland reported to be interested in the striker.
We just don’t think Newcastle will even attempt to sign the Gateshead lad, and we would think there’s a very good chance that he will sign on at Sunderland, but we just hope that come February 1st – Newcastle have a new striker in – and they may have to go down their list to get a striker we can persuade to come to Newcastle before February 1st – after the embarrassing Loic Remy affair.
We cannot be in a situation that with just a couple of days left in the transfer window we still have only Papiss Cisse and Shola Ameobi as the two strikers at the club – and in truth we should be trying to sign two strikers in January.
We are trying to recover from the disaster of last summer when we refused to strengthen the side – but we don’t see much difference in the way the Newcastle Board are going after their targets – and that’s a big concern to us.
Newcastle’s record through the first 17 days of the transfer market is not good – with Mathieu Debuchy coming in and Demba Ba moving out, and Newcastle losing out to bottom placed QPR for our top striker target Loic Remy.
We need to get a move on, and not leave things until the last minute – and it seems to us the Newcastle Board are looking far too much like the US Congress these days – and that’s not good.

Comment #42Ed, you mention the embarassing Remy affair. Why embarassing? I guess you mean because we were beaten out by a smaller club.
Southampton drew at Chelsea, QPR beat them, we must be hoping for points against them. Of course, like Shearer said, the next two matches are more important… It’s beginning to look that the 40 point mark will rise this year and that is ominous. Who can we beat now with no goal scoring forward? We just don’t have the luxury to wait for a single player to come back to form. What if he doesn’t? We need a READY CF now. Don’t know if Graham can be our Savior, but he’s deceptively good. Certainly would help.

he has no loyalty, is a bit of a crook, etc., but, deep down would you rather have Harry or Alan right now? Who’s the ‘winner’ of the two? Harry saved a few clubs from relegation and his teams always play attractive football. He personally ruined teams? Not so sure.

Comment #46Can get Malouda on a free, wages are a problem though.
From ESPN:
Florent Malouda appears to have outstayed his welcome at Chelsea, with a report in The Sun newspaper claiming the club are willing to release the forward for free in order to get his wages off their books. The oinly stumbling block, though, is that no other club has registered interest in signing him. Malouda currently earns £75,000 per week, and will likely need to lower his demands to complete a move in January.

Comment #49Surprise Surprise, havent been linked to any players today ..
Looks like Ashley and LambAss will not be bringing any new players in even if Colo leaves.
Then Pardew can come out and spare their blusehs by claiming that “we couldnt get them over the line”

Comment #50Gouffran and Lens seem like the best targets available, though I havent seen much about Lens lately.
Someone here mentioned Dimitri Payet from Lille. He’s a great choice for an attacking mid/winger imo. More of a goalmaker than Remy.

Comment #52More should have been done to sign Remy, he was a perfect fit for our team, we should have been offering 60k, that would have seasled the deal for me.
Now is not the time for frugelness, and anybody who uses the lack of transfers as an excuse if we do get beat on saturday should have their face smashed in.

Comment #53Would go and get Wilfred Zaha if we are serious about taking the club forward, offer 8 million and give him Remy’s 50k wages, he would be here in a shot.
That is a signing that shows ambition, if we dont move soon, the whold club will be a house of cards.
Especially if we lose at the weekend.

I agree – if Colo is on his way this window, which i think he will be, then this also frees up money from the wages kitty.

Comment #57I don’t think we can hope much for loyalty from players these days, everyone has their own dreams. We should look players with good ethics, not a trouble maker on or off the field, because players with top quality come with price tag we can’t afford and I don’t think many clubs want to sell their top players in January.
We don’t want another player with no good ethics like Ba.
We should look for decent skill plaayers who are suitable for our tactic or game plan, doesn’t matter how good a player is if he can’t play the way the rest of the team play.
Michu wasn’t great player, but he is suitable with Laudrup’s tactic which makes him good player now.
AC was a great player when he was with us, but became very poor because he can’t play liverpool (Daglish or Rodgers) style of football.

Comment #58While I’d really hope to sign someone of a higher calibre then Danny Graham, he would be welcome with open arms if we don’t.
The biggest issue I see for the remainder of the window is that as time runs out for us to sign people, prices will rise again. Clubs will see how desperate we are for reinforcements. Also the lack of time for them to bring in adequate replacements means they will only be willing to sell players surplus to requirements, so players who probably aren’t good enough for their current club. That is all well and good if we sign Barca or Real Madrid players, but not so helpful if we are trawling the championship or french leagues.

I’d say an optimistic 12 from those games. Although I’d revise that if anything ever happens with regards to new signings or Pardew having an epiphany and realising the way to play attacking football, and losing his negative set up.

Comment #60I think the club need to start thinking about getting players on loan with option to buy, this window is too short especially with the way we negotiate and I don’t think many clubs want to sell their main players in the middle of season.

Comment #65Oh, and did people see the Chronicle article yesterday saying it’s okay that we missed out on Remy, coz look at these other players we missed out on and how awful they ended up being.
Almost like Lee Ryder has been told, we are going to miss out on a few targets, so let’s run a story about the successes the club have had when failing to sign players!

I would honestly like to hear DL’s negotiation tactics in person. Many of us have speculated the angles he takes when he’s at the table.
I’m assuming Remy phoned us up about QPR’s wage offer, and DL’s counter was something along the lines of “Well….what if I didn’t ask you to pay me back for your plane ride?”

Carroll is a waste of time. Under fifa rules he couldn’t play for us as he has appeared for both Liverpool and West Ham. Highly unlikely Tomkins will be allowed to leave now Collins is injured.
Norcal – I’d imagine it is more like – “well if I ask Mike nicely, we could get you some nice new football socks, they come in packs of 5 and Mike will waive the normal £2.99 rrp. Just cause that@s the kind of top guy he is.”

Comment #70Am I the only one who doesn’t want to hear us being “linked with players”? We were linked with Modric, Luke de Jong, Remy and others- and look what happened. They didn’t materialise in one way or another. I prefer to hear that we’ve actually signed someone – or at least clear evidence that they are in the Toon (like the only time I felt a bit itk when I saw Ben Arfa at dinner in the Jesmond Dene Hotel before his official loan signing). Most “link” stories are either made up, wishful thinking or at worst, alert other money-wasting teams to the possibility. Let’s hope silence is golden!

Comment #71I don’t understand the logic of so many fans on here who rave about foreign players, many who play in inferior leagues and of whom we see very little, but deride British players already tried and tested in the Premiership.
If we want a centre forward, what is wrong with Danny Graham, Andy Carroll or Darren Bent who is warming the bench, if he is lucky, at Villa?
If we want a centre half, what is wrong with Jolean Lescot who appears to be out of favour at Man City?

Comment #74Cant believe some people are complaining that the board didnt fork out 90k a week for remy….. Trust me, hes not worth that! Not saying hes not decent because hes got everything in terms of attributes but if he dont fancy a game he may aswell not be on pitch, hes not a fighter and not ideal for a relegation battle! Hes also got that Anelka attitude! Big part of the reason marseille let him go for 8m, just a year after wantinh 20m is because they are competing for a title and he was detrimental to the dressing room aswell as being woefully off form, not trying in training etc

To be honest, I think we could use the bite and toughness that many English players bring. We just don’t seem to have that boss around mentality that Nolan and Barton gave us, not that I’m advocating we should have kept those two.

I have no problem with trying to loan Lescott, City have said they are willing to loan him, so why not try, then we can re visit our targets come summer.
Carroll, as I said before is pointless discussing as he isn’t eligible to play having played for two clubs already.
Graham, I would take, but I don’t see him as the solution. As a backup, or a sub then why not.
Darren Bent could be looked at. maybe even on loan with a view to a deal in summer, but to be honest I can’t see Villa wanting to let him join a relegation rival unless they were desperate for the cash to spend elsewhere.

Comment #77“but we don’t see much difference in the way the Newcastle Board are going after their targets ”
This is the worrying side of how our club is run, we all make mistakes – but we learn from them. Ashley is so stubborn i genuinely believe we will continue in HIS style as long as he is in charge. Yes he is the owner and will do it his way, my point is simple he will not allow mistakes to sway his opinion. This could be fatal.
Still glass half full though, plenty of time to go and still believe we will get some very good players in – mind you that glass will soon be sipped from !

Darren Bent is vastly over rated and for whatever reason cannot get in a poor villa side….either not good enough or a poor attitude which is not what we need.
Carroll since leaving us has barely found the goal and has spent about 50% of his time injured…cannot string 10 games together.
Danny Graham…again not getting in a swansea team, not to say he is a bad player as michu is just unplayable at the moment…danny graham would be a good buy but to replace leaon best, not demba ba…he isn’t a 15-20 goal a season player but could easily chip in with 5-10 goals as a squad player.

Comment #79Regarding carroll, im pretty sure there is a loop hole in that fifa club that allows it if one of the clubs is a loan signing? Wouldnt want carroll back to be honest but i do feel we need a bit of british steel! Would love a deal for rickie lambert! Remember pardew wanting him when carroll left but no one thought hed do well in the premier league! No chance i know because of his age! Also think charlie Austin, Shane Long and kevin doyle could be good alternatives

I’m not complaining so much about not matching QPR’s wages, I think they have vastly overpaid. What bothers me is we knew we were going to be in a problematic situation. Ba’s form and his clause should have meant that we were ready to move quicker. Had we got it done quicker then there would have been less opportunity to be gazumped. Not saying it wouldn’t have happened, but it would have reduced the risk, and also afforded us more time to move on other targets.
