Newcastle Making Progress On Siem de Jong Deal

2:32 pm, Friday, January 18th, 2013 by Ed Harrison · 525 Comments

The news coming from the local press related to Ajax midfielder Siem de Jong,  is that Newcastle are indeed talking about signing the player, but it is thought he will be a summer target for Newcastle, and of course that’s always assuming we will be Premier League club in June, because after what happened four years ago – you just never know.

Siem de Jong 99

Siem de Jong – on Newcastle’s radar screen

And the possibility we are making a move for de Jong is today backed up by his agent Louis Laros, who made this comment:

“There has been a lot of interest in Siem but at the moment he is the captain of Ajax, and he is happy at Ajax.” “I expect he will stay until the end of the season. But you never know.”

It’s that last sentence that becomes intriguing, because Newcastle are finding it difficult to get a top striker to the club, and this lad has an eye for goal, and he could play as a withdrawn striker behind Papiss Cisse.

This season de Jong has 13 goals in 27 appearances for Ajax, and he is also an excellent footballer, having been at Ajax all his career and come through the famous Youth Academy, and he’s very creative and could set up chances for Papiss Cisse, who’s shown he can put the ball in the back of the net, when given half a chance.

Indeed, this could be a move that Newcastle could shock us with, and he would be an even better acquisition than Loic Remy, and Newcastle have been reported willing to pay around £9M for the Dutch International.

Siem is the older brother of Luuk de Jong, who we failed to get from FC Twente last summer, but we still don’t think Ajax will let this lad go this month, but it does look like Newcastle are laying the ground-work for a summer move for the player.

But maybe Newcastle  will try to bring him in this month – and he would be fantastic signing – make no mistake about that.

Comments welcome.

If we sign this fella instead of Remy (who I wasn’t sure about at all) then I’ll eat my hat!

This player is a proper player. Brought up in the Ajax set up, hard working, creative, quick and a goal scorer.

He is exactly what we need.

If Pards and co pull this one off, I’ll probably fall of my chair with excitement.

Sadly though, I can’t see it happening.

Think I’ll just keep on staring out at the fields with the snow falling more and more, much nicer than thinking about our current plight!

Lads,I think everybody who has followed this blog for awhile knows how much NUFC and this blog means to me, I do not use any other blogs and certainly dont post under different names but I think I have lost the will to post anymore as I feel I have nothing of value to give to this blog, I am not saying goodbye but simply farewell, goodluck this season.HWTL.

Would it be worth sending a scout to watch barcelona, ajax, dortmund, bayern acaemy training or even try to get a current or former coach from there to come in and be in charge of our youth development?

Might have some tips on how to bring through great kids…..its no fluke these teams produce top talent year after year.

  • 9 richyg01 // Jan 18, 2013 at 2:38 PM

He would not give up being the captain of Ajax to come here, not to mention the other clubs lining up to sign him.

Forget the summer that is no good to us we need players now to make sure we are still a premier league next season like has been mentioned we are 1 injury (cisse) away from disaster and that is relying on the fact he hits top form again if he does not we are in a lot more trouble than I think a lot of people actually realise

  • 12 cyprus // Jan 18, 2013 at 2:39 PM

So, what have I missed? Agents are very unprofessional, working on best deals instead of what’s best for NUFC? Terrible. A secret internet site to be set up for teams to see only and exclude agents? Brilliant! Someone with no computer knowledge thought that one up. AP went to a coaching course? Good, but shouldn’t he have done that before he took up coaching?

  • 13 rainrix // Jan 18, 2013 at 2:39 PM

while you were away on a coaching course,
*did anyone work with the players on set plays? We’ve surely shattered that world record.
*has anyone watched a DVD or two of Reading, our next opponents? Have their weaknesses / strengths been identified?

  • 22 Big Pappa Cissé // Jan 18, 2013 at 2:48 PM

I reckon Ed should do a poll on whether NUFC fans think we will bring in anyone else this window. I for one think we are done (I hope not) and it will be the same old “like a new signing” or couldn’t get them over the line. Have Newcastle fans done something in a previous life to deserve being treat like this ?

  • 23 JToon21 // Jan 18, 2013 at 2:48 PM

For me this is a non-starter of story. I can’t see Siem trading the Champions of Holland and a gurantee of Champions League football each season for the us. Added to this Ajax actually have a decent manager in de Boer who actually seems to know what he is doing and not a puppet for his board. Saw Ajax play Man City earlier in the season and they have a very capable squad with lots of potential. People may point to Anita and say that we may offer an attractive propersition for Ajax players can’t see this being the case for Siem and the lack of ambition been shown by Newcastle currently

  • 24 richyg01 // Jan 18, 2013 at 2:49 PM

    Scouse_geordie

im a bit fedup with all the shit that is going on this season, i think we are just being fed lie after lie by the guys running the club

i think in pardew we have shown nothing to sugest we have got good players at our club
i mean no dissrespect to southampton and there players, but there a buch of unknown players really, and i watch them play and i think there a joy to watch,
for the firsrt 20 games this season pardew has had 2 of the very best strikers in the league and gave them no service at all
for the first 14 games he had players like marv anita cabaye HBA tiote, in and around the first team, not all at the same time but at least 3 of them at a time,
how with the players he had did we not attack and score more goals

our team has no shape at all on match days, we all sit and talk about the formation, and the strange thing is no one can put a finger on it and say yes , its a 442 or 433, 181 no one knows,
for me southampton have lesser players but great organisation, they know they can pass it out wide left or right,
for us if santon is not out on the left wing we have no one there, and if he is on the left wing we have no one at left back

WE LACK LEADER SHIP ALL THOUGH OUR CLUB

What is everyone’s thoughts on Mr. Gary Hooper?

  • 30 Rotonda heights // Jan 18, 2013 at 2:54 PM

I’m a bit envious of Southampton having a new Latino Coach to play Tikki Takka. We’d never get that lucky

To be fair to Adkins though he had 2 back to back promotions, came in to the premiership with arguably one of the weakest squads, stood his corner and still played football and was starting to acclimatise, culminating in coming back from 2-0 down at chelsea.

No Adkins wouldn’t be top of my list or even half way up, but we are talking the realms of attainable managers who could possibly do a better job than our current ” I’m god’s gift to football management”.

Having said that, with :- Krul, Debuchy, Colo, Saylor, Santon, Anita, Cabaye, Marveaux, Cisse, we only have to replace Shola with PEA and Jonas with Benny and even Pardew couldn’t screw that up!

  • 31 beefman13 // Jan 18, 2013 at 2:54 PM

Jail For Ashley, jumping ship eh, throwing in the towel, man overboard, when the going gets tough, you have had enough you cant add anything else, you are all washed up bonny lad!!!

Approaching the 19th Day of the transfer window and I am preparing myself for the usual Pardew line of ‘failing to get people over the line’ comment which seems to be the usual after every transfer window. Newcastle act on a strickly one in one out philosophy so I should imagine maybe one striker to come through the door and Danny Simpson to be pushed out before the end of this window.

but if that happens, worst case scenario….we still get to watch newcastle next year you know? the team doesn’t go out of existence when not in the prem league….so cheer up guys.

  • 41 Transfer Sage // Jan 18, 2013 at 2:59 PM

    Also

people used to protest against shepherd in their thousands often for not signing a second 15mil player.

Why on earth aren’t we against mike ashley?

liverpool showed with pressure you can get your owner to sell up…easy for them as a lot of people would want to own liverpool…but a lot would want to own nufc too.

  • 42 santonthenewmaldini // Jan 18, 2013 at 3:00 PM

    @mattnufc

Yes Hooper will be great in the premier league playing with the right team eg one that plays the ball on the deck as Celtic do

I am from Scotland and he was actually better than Jelavic who is great for Everton

His movement is great and he can beat players and scores all types of goals

I dont think we will get him though as Celtic want silly money and in the papers in Scotland everyone connected with Celtic has a mindset that someone like Newcastle would be a serious step down

They have a bit of hate for the Toon after Pardew’s comments about Fraser Foster last season

@mattnufc… Hooper? Youngish decent goalscoring record (80 apps 53 goals), good finisher. People often write off players coming from the SPL but theres been plenty of players over the years who prove they can step up, Jelavic for example.

Do you believe a bid similar to Remy of ~8-9m would be enough to get him? Personally, I would like to see him here. Would allow us to progress with more fluid football. I can’t see NUFC going after him though, unfortunately.

  • 49 beefman13 // Jan 18, 2013 at 3:09 PM

Mauritius, good old JFA has been given it large for donkeys, ive had a few tear ups with the lad as well as a few others threatening to chin him outside the strawberry ha ha!!

Once you start to get rid of the negativity you can move forward, must admit our manager bugs the hell out of me most of the time with his stagnent tactics that every team that plays us knows about, hes so predictible its unreal, “a bit like JFA really”

I mean which opposing manager has not seen our only free kick option to williamson to head back over in to the box, it borders on the pathetic.

Got to say that John Tudor character is going to take some perking up, that fella looks shipwrecked already.

  • 50 Ketsbaia9 // Jan 18, 2013 at 3:10 PM

    toonLYF

i do understand how you feel

but this game they are in ,, you can not stand still and loook at last season and say wow, didnt i do well, and for me this is where pardew has falling down,

i said many times last year i thought he was a lucky manager, IMO we did not play great football , and pardew rightly points out, last year we were winning games 1-0 2-1, just doing enough, working the players like dogs and having them run all over

ppl remember we beat chelsea 2-0 , but forget we got murdered in the game and were hanging on for our lifes until cisse scored that wonder goal, all ppl see is we won,, now take those performances like that and switch the results, and you have this season, same football different results

west brom at home this season, they were great, going for a lucky draw for us, sammy bang, shoots , going no where , cisse ducks out the way it hits him we get all points, fantastic,, ppl remember the win and not how poor we were,, buying pardew more time than he should get,,

look at each game thise season on its own merrit look at the opposition , and you will see, yes we have had injuries, but the teams we have had out no the pitch have been better than we are being lead to believe

pardew has a very poor record if you look at it

  • 55 santonthenewmaldini // Jan 18, 2013 at 3:13 PM

    @Mattnufc

The problem is Celtic at the moment do not need the money Champions league allowed them to be secure , they pretty much will win the league for the next 3 or seasons at a canter with no Rangers which means a guaranteed Champs league pot nearly every year

Celtic may sell for 8 million but i doubt our board would pay 8 for a SPL player anyone remember Boumsong??

Hooper might not want to join us anyway they have Juve in the Champs league and he will win trophies up there he might win the championship if he plays with us the way we are going

I said that a while back, Munster Mag. Pardew seems to be a much more likeable Souness this season (not like that’s particularly saying much) and it’s safe to say that we’re all getting sick of it. He motivated the players for the likes of Man U and Arsenal to play attractive football and produce an entertaining match… yet here we are. Being held to a goalless draw against Norwich.

Still, with Cabaye back on the pitch, it’ll make it easier to get forward. Can’t underestimate that lads influence. Future captain. Easily.

    Lennon Said:

“There’s a bid,” he said. “But it’s very disappointing it has been made public knowledge.

“We do our business as privately as possible and it’s been leaked out somewhere, so I’m not happy about that.

“The bid has been rejected. We had discussions with his representatives this morning, and we are waiting to hear back from them.

“We are in a good position. We don’t want to sell. We feel we have a lot to look forward to in the second half of the season.

“And that’s always been the case. We don’t want any of our top players going, and Gary comes into that bracket.”

tds, i dont like the manager simple as i dont like his tactics or formations or his bullshiting, our players who get brought in and the ones coming back may save his skin, we will survive imo, but not beacuse of him, but beacuse the quality in the squad will eventually come through, a close one, yes, but his position needs looking at beacuse he is clueless.

  • 85 toonLYF // Jan 18, 2013 at 3:29 PM

    catchy…

it’s a good point my friend, and i’m sure every Newcastle fan who isn’t lying to themselves would say we got break after break last season. However, there’s so taking away from Pardew that he got the team playing devastatingly good football at the end of last season, and whilst this was partly down to the teams confidence soaring, Pardew deserves plaudits for that.

It’s the same either way, now there’s no confidence in the team, people are looking to Pardew to bring that back. It works both ways; and i will hold him in high regards for being part of the end product, that was a 5th place finish.

Personally, i think he’s not as bad as people are making him out to be now, and not as good as people were making him out to be last season.

Always the extremes with the Toon, but good point mate.

    BlacknWhite

That’s what I mean. If Aubeymenyang is our first choice then we should bid for him. If St Etienne say he’s not for sale at 8 then bid 10! You have to pay extra. If/when they accept you can then offer wages which he might reject or accept but either or at least we have gone for our first choice. It seems to me that if PEA is only worth £9 million in Ashleys eyes that’s all he will pay and he wont budge and that means we move onto N’Gog as a cheaper alternative.

It has to stop. I’m not saying pay more wages, but offer more in the transfer market!

Some will say ‘well if that happens once, it’ll likely happen again with another player’. No it won’t, each deal is individual and each will have different outcomes.

In Jan you have to force the other club to sell with a good offer not just haggle over a few million. That’s what got us into this mess!!

  • 95 John Tudor // Jan 18, 2013 at 3:34 PM

Don’t worry about this wee bonny lad, lifejacket on and ready for action.

Joking and theatrics aside…..things do need sorting quickly, there is uncertainty across the board. One option is to change Pardew and hope the rest sorts itself out, however it does seem there are other things we can do first like signing the players we’ve needed for a while, which any manager would have requested and assess where we are at.

  • 101 Beattie25 // Jan 18, 2013 at 3:39 PM

Danny Graham will cost over £5 million, Hooper the same.

Neither will want to be back up and no player costing that much should be back up.

We need another quality striker at a good price to start and add to the team.

When it comes to back up we should be looking for a exciting 21 year old who is close to reaching his potential. Not a 27 year old whose only interesting factor is he supports NUFC or a 24 year old who is good at Championship and SPL level.

There are some brilliant players out there in Europe, South America, Africa, Asia etc… who would cost a lot less than £5 million and offer more than these 2 over hyped, over priced English ‘back up’ players.

  • 102 Ian Toon // Jan 18, 2013 at 3:39 PM

not trying to rehash this, but…

Loic Remy revealed a game of FIFA 12 with Queens Park Rangers chairman Tony Fernandes confirmed his decision to move to Loftus Road.

The 26-year-old Frenchman agreed to a 4 1/2-year deal with the R’s on Wednesday, after manager Harry Redknapp secured the striker for a club-record fee.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Remy revealed a four-hour talk with Fernandes regarding his future ended in a game of FIFA 12, sealing the deal at Loftus Road.

“It was a special moment that followed our chat about QPR,” Remy said. “We just played a game of FIFA — it was good and showed to me what a good person Tony is.

“He showed his human side to me as an owner of the club I wanted to join. It was a special moment for us both.”

Beefman….Like it or not, but Shola is our 2nd and really only viable striking option after Cisse. With no new players in I’d be happy at having another choice as well.

That isn’t to say I don’t rate Campbell, as I do, but I get the feeling, rightly or wrongly, the club don’t feel it right to throw the kid in to this mess and ruin his confidence, hence him returning to the development squad.

Pardew does have areas to improve on, that is for sure. Small steps though. Getting some points and confidence back is the first one for me (as well as some signings).

  • 120 beefman13 // Jan 18, 2013 at 3:49 PM

Munster, i have said all along, especially this season that Pardew has been way to cautious, he is putting teams on the park not to win but not to get beat, and it has backfired terribly, opposing teams dont have to do much homework on us beacuse we are so bloody predictible, he best start mixing tactics and players up especially at home or he really will dig a hole he wont be able to get out of.

LYF….Tbh, I haven’t seen much of him to make a judgement on whether I think he will make it, but certainly don’t think now is the time to find out. Pardew gets some things right then :)

Munster…I’m sure he’s stressed out, we all are and we don’t have the whole Geordie nation on our backs. However, it is his job and he needs to find the strength for himself and his players to go out there tomorrow and show us he’s serious about getting this back on track. Whilst the excuses hold some water for me, at some point you have to rise above it and fight on. That is where we are and the whole club needs to step up.

On the singing section thing…How does that work? People sing to their hearts content from what I’ve seen, when does it become an issue and what do they do to deal with it?

Rotonda…I don’t think he has one tactic (I know this as we have all seen it, although not as much as we’d like), what he has is one fall back tactic. That does need to change at some point. I put this down to him not believing he had the right players to carry out what he wanted, still no further forward with that assessment really.

    5. buy shares with rangers football club which could have been used with this club
6because we are st james park again the rangers stadium is now sport direct
    7. where ever you look in the stadium he has his buissness advertised
    8. we in severe need of CBs and forward yet we have not brought any and missed out on one to a relegation team
9.any players we do bring in seem to be very young future talents, is as if they a the resource for a player factory where we will sell them when they are very good
    10. more and more players are showing the signs that they would be better of else where because of such lack of ambition here
the list goes on and on

  • 152 JackButler // Jan 18, 2013 at 4:08 PM

Sacking Pardew isn’t the answer for us, Ashley will just go and employ another forgotten man who will be no better.

It’s time everyone realised that Ashley’s ambition is simply to exist in the premier league, that way he gets the massive TV money plus free advertising for his shabby little retail company. Champion’s league will cost him money, money that he’s not prepared to put up as there’s far too much of a risk involved.

We will never be a big club with Ashley at the helm as he runs us with a small club mentality on a shoe string budget.

Dark horse to be sucked in would be West Brom too, there form lately is awful! 2 players and 2 wins in the next 2 weeks should see us finish the season strongly

Jesper….Beefman is trying to rustle up a crew, should I arm the cannons cap’n?

JB….Apologies for my constant shining light optimism, however, if you will entertain me for a couple of minutes :)

Is it at all plausible that the first main objective was to make the club self sufficient. Once that is done, profits would then be invested in bringing players in? If so, would that then not give us the chance to push on?

I know it’s hard to even contemplate, given his track record with transfers, however, if you are inclined to believe that was down to keeping self sufficient, could that situation not change?

toonking – there are a lot of drama queens on here.

Pardew is a mediocre manager that has failed the tough challenge of being top of the injury league and trying to compete in Europe for the first time in a while.

Would we be in this situation if Wenger was coaching the team – I very much doubt it. However, if we had Kinnear, Alladyce, Souness, Daglish, Gullitt etc we would be worse or at least no better off in my humble opinion.

You are quite right, he is about as good as we are going to get until Ashley & co build a reputation as being a professional board and a well run club – if they are ever capable of such things.

Also, I think what is lost on a lot of people is that it is not only a team on the pitch, there is a team off the pitch as well. Pardew has analysts/strategists that help him with tactics so it’s not like the way we play is all of his own ideas. Of course the buck does stop with him when it comes to performances in relation to the resources that he has at hand.

Wouldnt surprise me if we go back in for luuk de jong! Lads having a poor time at ‘gladbach, hes critisized the tactics for not being direct enough and too slow in the build up! He said my qualities lie in the physical battle and movement from quick play in from the wings and thats not how they prefer to play here….. 2 de jongs would work for me :-)

  • 169 toonking // Jan 18, 2013 at 4:19 PM

i noticed a few mistake so i will correct that post.
After reading through all these posts i am shocked to see people again getting at pardew, ok he might not be the very best but i would say that he is the best man for the job while this cockney bastard is still running the club. Do you want to end up with the heart attack back, do you want the jerek lambastard to be manager or denise lies back because their is no way we’ll ever get a excellent manager with cashley as owner.
    the evinence is everywhere
    1. caused mayhem the year keegan arrived.
    2. sold carroll at the last minute yet no striker came in.
3.changed to name of the stadium to his brand.
4.after such a great finish last season we get only 2 players who can play games yet, we miss out on loads that we had links with due to just a bit more money to be paid
    5. buy shares with rangers football club which could have been used with this club
6because we are st james park again the rangers stadium is now sport direct
    7. where ever you look in the stadium he has his buissness advertised
    8. we in severe need of CBs and forward yet we have not brought any in, instead we missed out on one to a relegation team
9.any players we do bring in seem to be very young future talents, it’s as if they are the resources for a player factory, where we will sell them when they are very good
    10. more and more players are showing the signs that they would be better of else where because of such a lack of ambition here
the list goes on and on

  • 170 p // Jan 18, 2013 at 4:19 PM

JB – I think MA wants to do as well as possible on the cheap.

He would love for us to be in the champions league hammering Barcelona but, he is not prepared to spend the money that the club can not generate in a sustainable way (i.e. not banking on prize money)

If we want that, we really need to an oil sheik or whatever to buy us.

Of course, he needs to invest more. I think we all agree that the club is perhaps too profitable right now and genuine transfer proceeds have not been fully re-invested. Time will tell if this is rectified though.

    Plausible………………….Yes
    Possible…………………..Yes
    Probable…………………..I doubt it.

We are a club in crisis, facing relegation all because we failed to fix the issues during the summer.
We have an owner that most people have no trust/faith in to do the right thing.
A manager who is nothing more than a puppet/voice piece for those above him who has become a mass of contradictions .

And if, by the grace of God we actually do manage to retain our Premier League status for next season I expect there be an exodus of players who see that we have no ambition.

But, I hope beyond everything else in this world that Ashley prove’s me wrong………….but I doubt it

  • 173 Ketsbaia9 // Jan 18, 2013 at 4:21 PM

Maybe not even that. Just a centre back and another striker would make us better than Man Utd. Spurs, Arsenal, Man City and Chelsea have the best current squads in the league.

Man Utd have 3 decent strikers and that’s it. Their midfield, defense and goalkeepers are distinctly average.

We don;t need to go and spend massive amounts of money as our transfer record of late proves.

I would say an extra 20 million investment in the window during the summer could have seen us push on from last season, but we failed to solve our defensive issue’s, failed to deal with Ba’s contract when everyone knew he’s be off at the fist sight of more money.

I have more footballing knowledge than most of you and Miek Ashley should’ve taken notice of my comments last summer. He didn’t, and that’s why we’re struggling this season. I said we needed at least 4 new players in the summer. We need a new owner. With those 4 additions, we would’ve been challenging for a top 4 place. Now we’re back to square one.

A lot of fans criticised Marveaux for being very poor, however, I suggested that he should be starting every game as he is one of our best players. He’s proved you doubters wrong.

I will reiterate, the seniors have got us in this position in the prem, the youngins on the whole got us through to the last 32 of the europa, and when the younger lads have played there has always been half a team of seniors who have been at least as worse ie bordeaux who have been beaten once at home in 10 years, and brighton, and with brighton the seniors were not far short of shocking and only “sammy i dont know the war is over ameobi was a parcel were the younger players were concerned. our manager has slaughtered our younger players confidence with his outragous comments, that turned me against him for starters, his darling seniors are the ones who have 90 per cent of the time not stepped up to the plate.

both QPR and West Ham are clubs likely to spend stupid amounts on wages and transfer fees they cannot afford. If someone thinks we should really get into bidding wars with either of them, then they’re sorely mistaken. To think that two sextoy salesmen have the money to run a football club the way they do is just silly. I wrote a post a couple of days ago on how unnattractive I feel we’d be for the top talents in Europe at the moment. Still, if we could somehow pursuade Siem De Jong into joining us that would be a fantastic signing IMO. He may not be the pacy striker we have been after, but he’s got a football head. His positioning, smartness and passing is great. He’s one of the players that gets Ajax to really tick and create chances, even against Europe’s top teams.

In short, he would be a quality signing for us. He should be brough in along 2-3 other players though, since we’re in desperate need of depth.

Right then good sirs, I bid thee farewell for now. Catch you later.

Do you think he would make a good leader for us? We all know we’ve been lacking that and it would make him a doubly important signing.

  • 243 toonLYF // Jan 18, 2013 at 5:13 PM

Nani would get torn to pieces by the fans here, and rightly so. Just because he plays for Man U, doesn’t mean he’s any good.

    Portugese Obertan is exactly right.

Nani is a hesitant, frustrating winger, yes he is a more naturally gifted footballer than Obertan, but 12m? F that!

  • 244 MrToon // Jan 18, 2013 at 5:18 PM

Also says that AC have become interested. I can’t take much more of this!. Just one bit of positive news for the month would be awsome.

  • 245 cyprus // Jan 18, 2013 at 5:20 PM

How do you even compare the two?? One a regular star in the Portuguese side, proven record, the other has never established himself anywhere! I really don’t get it, sorry. I don’t know why he lost his place in that side, but then, so did Lampard. btw, those two, or same calibre, would be more than enough to ‘get us over the line’, to quote our coach

  • 246 JP...from The Rock // Jan 18, 2013 at 5:21 PM

This player doesn’t excite me tbh. Remy and his pace did. We need a a very quick and nimble striker that can also play on the wings and this player is neither.

Instead of tapping up this guy for a possible summer move, we should really be going after players that will save us from the drop now!! In summer we might be relegated and all the time wasted on this player could have been spent on one that could have saved our Premiership Status. It really gets me how stupid our board is!!

I think that when you captain Ajax, you should be a good leader, as they’re one of the historically great teams of Europe.

So getting a player in who is not afraid to take responsibility and shout out orders would do us great. While he wouldn’t be made captain on his first day, he would probably get involved right away and dictate things out on the pitch along with Coloccini (if he stays). Other than Coloccini and to an extent Cabaye, we’re really in need of some leader figures as you pointed out in your post.

  • 248 Santon03 // Jan 18, 2013 at 5:23 PM

DeJong is not the only one NUFC should buy from Ajax, we should buy two or three of Ajax youth coaches. They always produce great talents year after year.

Good I just worried if he lacked the fight. But when you play like Ajax I guess you have to have a good leader.

Haidara is also interested in Roma. I wonder if he can play CB as well? He’s much more physical that Santon as a fullback at least.

I wonder if dekka writes the statements for opposing agents, md’s and managers to dampen transfer rumours. He writes some sweet scripts for pardew!!

  • 261 Tsunki // Jan 18, 2013 at 6:01 PM

I am hoping that in any case Haidara was not a main target because he’s not the polished product for our team right now. Khaoui is a 17 – year – old who is on the books of FC Tours but its French translation if you want any background on him. Again, future prospect so I have no idea if this is true or not but in any case not the solution we need right now, that looks like a summer buy thing. Yohan Gouffran is being bandied about recently as a possible target but strangely no offers for him athough he keeps cropping up, now apparently Pards has let slip somewhere we may go in for him, again a rumour shrouded in a hint of a suggestion.

Whats the craic with Mbiwa? Sissoko? We are going to end up with nobody arent we? all our targets will be snapped up by WHU, Reading, Villa……

And with the weather it’s another thing for our boys to use as an excuse. I can just imagine post match ap interview: they just handled conditions better than us. It is a real pity that Tiotie is absent tomorrow as we will need players who are up for the fight. The one attribute the Chief does not lack is his ability to battle for the cause and now that Cabaye is back we could have done with both in tandem.Whilst Taylor will help in defence if fit we need to stop the opposition running through our midfield and lose the growing reputation we are gaining of being a soft touch in midfield. We could also do with a couple of experienced premier league midfield players for our squad as several of our squad whilst possessing ball skills are not blessed with physique or great fighting qualities needed in a relegation fight.Let us hope both our attitude and our performance are of a standard that is capable of bringing three much needed points.

  • 293 Lucky Les // Jan 18, 2013 at 7:09 PM

    Santon

What do you do with a very talented footballer who has not shown himself to be a very talented full back.On the basis that this point is accepted and I appreciate that this will not be universally accepted we seem to have 3 alternatives:
1 The player is coached by talented coaches experienced in defensive strategy and positioning so as to improve the player. This needs the player to be open to such coaching and ,of course such coaches to be available.
2 The player is converted to a new position that uses his skills in a positive way for the overall benefit of the team.once again the willingness of the player to change position and an experienced talented coach will be needed
    3 Transfer the player.
Hopefully either 1 or 2 will be the preferred choice but we must create a system that utilises Santon ‘s undoubted ability and is not detrimental to our defensive formation.

I, for one, would welcome Bent as an option now. That is IS we can’t get any other strikers in. I’ve never really liked him as a footballer, but he can score goals, he’s proven that over the years. Having him along Cissè with his strength or off the bench, it would be a welcome option if no-one else comes in.

A 2 year contract could be worth a shot, and he would probably be up for it since he isn’t really drawing too much attention from top clubs nowadays. If he’s asking silly money, never mind, he isn’t worth it. But as an affordable “short term” option, why not? If it’s proving to be such a “tough window” to get exciting players in, it could be one of the best deals available for the club right now.

Mind as you you think Abeid is better than Yo, and
Toon are better than Manure then all your opinions are pretty dubious

On Hooper. I thought Jelavic would struggle in the EPL,but he has proved a shrewd buy. Also have had reservations about Hooper but I’ve changed my mind, given his consistency in the SPL and now think he would be a very good buy for us as this time. He will be good enough to play in a starting 11 for us though ought to be No3 striker once we replace Ba. IMO he’s more of a Best replacement – though quite a lot better player than him.

Scrappy wins against Reading, this has become acceptable, not in my eyes, rubbish, f##king rubbish.

I for one would welcome Darren Bent, would be nice to see some experience in the team insted of gambling on foreigners or young players. In the situation we need it is vital we get experience. There is only Shola, Simpson, Taylor, Colo and Harper who have real experience of the premier league and i think that shows on a match day. We need leaders, if things arent going right and we need to make a change, we have no one to bring on with experience to try and get us a vital goal. Darren has proved he can score goals in this league. I think a 2 year contract would be ideal however my only concern is whether he would link up well with Papiss

‘There is more than 1 deal currently in serious negotiation and when i say more than 1 i’m not just talking about 2, they are seriously out there in the market place’

I hope Pardew plays Marv in the hole against Reading, he’s not a winger and doesn’t track back with any conviction but he’s great in the final third.

442 with Marv in the hole, Oba and Guti out wide with Anita and Cabs pulling the strings in the middle of the park, Guti pitching in there when needed and Oba attacking his fullback.

Lets see some attacking intent at home against Reading. 3 points and a couple of new signings in the following week if poss please, as this foetal position I seem to be stuck in is becoming a little passe’

It’s really difficult to stomach some of the stuff on this blog lately. It just seems to be largely full of spiteful people trying to make everyone else as miserable as they are.

I’m truly mortified at the way this season is going, but you know what – if we win 1-0 tomorrow with a scrappy own goal in the last minute, it’ll make my week. I think we were our own worst enemy during the first summer window with cabs etc.
We were really succesful in finding some fantastic talent in ligue1 for low fee’s and prob low wages
We then went round banging on about our fantastic scouting system and how we got great buisness and how france has been a great hunting ground for us
Now all other teams have to do is wait til the agent says were intrested and bam match the bid, up the wages and were left in the rear view mirror!

  • 348 Fog on my mind // Jan 18, 2013 at 8:48 PM

this has been the worst week of my life. i have given it large that my team NUFC is a top team in England. But now i hold my hand up and say the times they are changing.
Yes I also got giddy on the idea that we are bigger than QPR and questioned Remy’s lack of ambition by not joining us. But after necking 15 cans of Nukie it came to me that Shearer dont know shite. And moreover that QPR have it rite. I dont know now whats rite. I mean should Shearer be allowed to talk shite.
But the fog is clearing. Damn! QPR have a right to have ambition. £9million for Remy dont sound too bad when our Andy went for 35million and Torres for 50 million.
Please KK give me the strength to accept that in reality QPR are a bigger club than us because they believe. Whilst I dont.

So, according to Pardew’s (apparent) recent comments we’ll be getting 2 £8m+ signings before February.

Because everything he says during transfer windows comes true, doesn’t it?

  • 351 Dannyo // Jan 18, 2013 at 8:53 PM

    @TDS
We won’t be having much convincing play until we’ve regained some confidence. The fact that people expect a miracle style play all of sudden baffles me.
It’s completely devoid any kind of realism. It’ll be tough, it’ll be a grind, there will be mistakes, but the team needs to stay rigid and play with resolve before we start to play with exuberance. It’s hard work getting back to where we were last season.

On the blog and what is being said, i’ve largely migrated over to twitter, at least during the window. There i can be a bit more selective and there are no certain “moods” driving the site.
I can pick who i wanna read or listen to, lol.
I post on here now and again, but not much, not much at all.
It drives me mad to see all the thoughtless comments that are being put out there.
Negative people being realists? No they’re not, they’re into the same grade of being deluded as much as the positive.

They’re all balancing on the same weight but on either side of the scale, but they can’t see it.

  • 381 p // Jan 18, 2013 at 9:36 PM

I can see Bent as a cheap loan signing or just a cheap secondary signing.

If that is the case it’s not knee jerk, it is just another value for money transaction that they have executed.

It’s another option but it does not solve the problem that we need a big CF and CB signing

  • 382 soundoid // Jan 18, 2013 at 9:39 PM

To say we undercooked the transfer market in the summer was an understatement. We didn’t even turn the oven on. To put this all in perspective as a club we have been naive beliving we could compete in Europe after letting go of some players and not bringing in enough.
This fixture list added injuries to this oversight and has affected our PL status.

I hope we turn this around as i don’t think we will make the same mistake again. If we get relegated it’s a whole other story.

I for one will forgive Pardew if he can turn it around and hope he is a better manager for the experience.

No one really knows what can come out the other side if he gets the chance.
I’m willing to keep the faith in him, but the amount of time he’s gotten despite the poor run is quite surprising.

Mactoon – unfortunately the Coloccini situation is a slow burner because I think it is now a case of waiting to see what Newcastle do. San Lorenzo have said that they can’t pay for him and the manager has today said that Colo is their priority and they want him as soon as possible but the time limit is out of their control. They have other targets that I they are keen to move for but only once they know the Coloccini transfer is dead.

  • 387 bollance // Jan 18, 2013 at 9:44 PM

Bent is 28. As an asset he will only drop in value. Let’s face it his value is at least half of the amount villa paid for him. The fee villa paid being over £20m suggests he is on big money too. Out of our means. Finally out of form and out of favour.

Don’t get your hopes up on this one.

  • 388 Mookie // Jan 18, 2013 at 9:44 PM

What’s with all this doom and gloom, my good friends? If we do sign Siem de Jong, it won’t be the first time we’ve signed the captain of European league-winning and Champions League-qualifying club. Yohan Cabaye could’ve stayed at Lille, or indeed move to other clubs of a similar league standing. And yet he came to Tyneside. As did Vurnon Anita from Ajax too, and he looks better every time he plays. But if we do sign de Jong, it should be made as a statement of intent, and not in furtherance of a business plan whose prerequisites seem to include selling our best players.

Toon_Tom, I think there is merit in that, might not help the long time plan but 1 or 2 of those guys would probably help keep us up.

Lescott knows what he is doing and you always fancy Drogba to get a goal or too, no matter what. They would be my choices probably cost less than $10m to transact those 2 until the end of the season and you would massively improve your survival chances in lieu of no other signings

The only loan deals will be with options to buy. Not the best idea to develop another teams players and pay for the privilege.

“Obviously, Jores would like to prove himself in more competitive leagues, but we have no hurry. It could happen in January or in the summer.

“He is an intelligent guy and a model professional. The only thing I can say for sure, is that any choice won’t be made for economic reasons. We seek a project and not the money. ”

Mind you I think hooper could have great link up play with cisse. I know he’s not the type of striker we all hope for but he is kinda like Nolan, can do his bit in the midfield and chip in with those goals because his positional sense is quite good.

We should go after Ricki Lambert. PL proven. Good scoring record. Has never missed a penalty – 31 in total. Previously worked with Pardew. With Nigel Atkins gone, players may be unsettled – good time to buy. Age may be a problem (30) but a high quality player

Also why are people rumouring Bent apart from the obvious-wages ,price ,value, lazy arsehole. Why would a relegation rival sell a goalscorer to us?

  • 435 Special K // Jan 18, 2013 at 11:14 PM

There was a post on twitter about one of Pardew’s fan meetings today and one of his answers to the “always on the cheap question” was that NUFC were far along the line for two £8m deals.

Didn’t think much of it until I see that Mbiwa talk, €8m which is like £6.2m so that’d be a stunning steal. Gives me enormous confidence if this is on the money we’ll see another deal through the door.

Not sure about your appraisal of Carr. We are never going to get it right 100% of the time. Another player we supposedly missed out on was Gervinho but his attitude was not right. Look at the impact he has made to date!

Alternatively in his capable hands we are adding one or two top players a season. Not a bad return.. but other teams are now onto us. We need to ‘become interested’ in some ringers!

Agents are the problem. An idea would be to make a %age cap on transfer fee, like 10%. or for free transfers a tribunal will determine the market value and club will pay 10% of that.

When cabs came to the club he was on the fringes of the natinal team. In one season here he has enhanced his reputation and is now a shoe-in.

Same situation with M’Biwa? Also with the figures banded about he will be doubling his salary plus but paying less tax. Top end tax in france is 75% (on earnings over 1m euros??).

    Lets hope the first option?

But as i have suggested regularly on here. When players are playing for new contracts they certainly play that bit better. Dyer was a prime example.. it was the only time he was not injured!

ATTACK! Get some support and SERVICE to Cisse from wide positions and he will get goals. We are at HOME and ffs it’s READING man! I personally think Pardew does not have to constantly bark out orders from the sideline to each player when they have the ball. The instructions & tactics should be sorted in the dressing room beforehand and you have to let the players PLAY. But you hear him every match shouting constantly and I think it distracts the players. At least tell them to play it on the ground ffs or just continue with the same old 7-2-1 tactics and bypass the midfield with brainless punts. I still think it will be a scrappy 1-1 draw but please prove me wrong and WIN BY ATTACKING MAN!! HTL

  • 484 MacToon // Jan 19, 2013 at 2:21 AM

Tim Vickery latest on Colo: His take on it is San Lorenz tried to unsettle Colo and NUFC in the hope that we wouldn’t want an unsettled player at Newcastle so we’d let him go.

He suggests that we could offer to do a trade for a number of their best youngsters but because of visa restrictions they would probably have to work elsewhere in Europe first before being allowed to work in the UK! Seems a bit long winded an unlikely imo.

He cannot see us letting him go and knowing how Ashley deals I tend to agree with him but only time will tell.

  • 485 t00ntime // Jan 19, 2013 at 2:36 AM

so walcott signed a 100k a week deal and arsenal…. talk about overpaying for avg players. It will be funny to see what arsen does, cause walcott signed because he was told he wud play as ST more but, I cant see him staying as ST long cause frankly he is a sh1t shot. imo

I think we will get a clean sheet today +a squeeky win. it all depends on how pards plays (attacking/ defensive etC) but i really dont see him wanting to concede, we are trying to build up momentum anyway possible and a good start would be 2 clean sheets in a row.

  • 486 chris_g // Jan 19, 2013 at 2:59 AM

    MacToon

That comment by Tim Vickery sounds about right to me, although I suspect it’s mainly Colo’s dad who is behind this, rather than the San Lorenzo club. This wouldn’t be the first time that Colo has changed clubs in slightly controversial circumstances.

    From wikipedia:

“Coloccini was at the centre of a controversy between Boca and Milan, because the transfer from Argentina to Italy wasn’t agreed between the clubs. Instead, Milan arranged terms with Coloccini’s father (also a former football player), who exercised his parental rights to remove the minor from Argentina. After that, FIFA ordered Milan to pay Boca compensation.”

It looks to me as though Mr Coloccini senior may be getting up to his old tricks again.

there are reports from France that they have accepted an offer of around 8M euros and that all he needs to do is sign on the dotted line (where have we heard this before)

Other reports that Spurs, Arsenal and (you guessed it) QPR are also hopefull of getting him.

He is a steal at that price. he can play anywhere across the back and is a confident ball-playing defender.

If it is true and it comes off i will get a small bit of confidence back in MA,DL and AP and hopefully push on for a forward and a pacey winger.

Id still go for Graham. will give 110% when called upon, cheap wages, loves the toon and has an eye for goal. It will be stuipid not to sign him up. He would jump at the chance.

But, again, more hopefull rumours more than anything mate !

Hooper to replace Ba and M Biwa for Collo + 3 squad players

  • 510 Blaydon-Toon // Jan 19, 2013 at 6:34 AM

Good morning fellow Toonies …. If Mbiwa rumours are true I hope to god we get the deal wrapped up before anyone else has a chance ! Get in through the door massive charm offensive and we will look a lot stronger right away – my fingers are crossed ! Oh and three points today would be lovely I’m not asking for much :-)

I think Shola’s gonna score today. Scored against QPR.. fancy him scoring today

  • 512 Blaydon-Toon // Jan 19, 2013 at 6:39 AM

I think we will win 2-0 today as I have a new positive outlook on life so I guess that should include Newcastle results ! Would love Cisse to score today as it could be a massive turning point in our season ….

Good team Tom Tom but Gutierrez will def play …..

  • 516 Toon_Tom // Jan 19, 2013 at 6:56 AM

blaydon – yeah I know i know, but this is MY team for the day ;)

I would stick Jonas in the holding role. he has lost his legs, can not dribble, has no end product and the only benefit he brings to the team is the free kicks he wins in dangerous positions.

on that note – i know that many PL teams/managers still think Jonas is a quality winger. We should cash in IMO – £4-6M would do nicely ;)

  • 517 Blaydon-Toon // Jan 19, 2013 at 7:03 AM

Not sure we could get that sort of money for him and if we could I would snap your hand off …. About time we scored from a free kick or corner our set plays have been terrible all season ! Hope Taylor is back as he is more of a threat than Williamson who just gives away needless fouls ….

  • 518 Toon_Tom // Jan 19, 2013 at 7:07 AM

agreed – everything about Williamson worries me. terrible defender and god knows how he has made a career of it, esp at the Toon in the top division.

We miss Ryan Taylor alot more than we thought. Excellent delivery, commitment and ethic!

I walked into work at half4 this morning and it was still snowing but very lightly. Roads looked okay and im sure that SJP will have been nicely heated using the AC money in prep for the BIG GAME today :)

According to our information, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa will soon engage with the English club Newcastle. According to our information, the final details of the transfer were resolved Friday between the different parties. The transfer fee should be around 8 million euros. The French international will receive a contract on his side 3.8 million euros per year.

I still think mbia, gomis, de jong and haidara are still good shouts. Reports say gomis and de jong have played down talks but both agents fof the players have said lets see what happens so still possible of a deal. If anything does happen though I would expect it nearer the end of january. lets get a win today lads wooo!
