Newcastle United are being linked today with Bordeaux forward Yoan Gouffran, who can play on the wing or as an out-and-out striker, and he has played 22 times for the France U21 side, but has never been capped at the full International level.
Yoan Gouffran – Newcastle interested?
Yoan stands 5’10″ tall and has something we don’t have much of in the Newcastle side at the moment - speed – and he can put the ball home with either foot. He’s 26 and one of the strange things about the player is that he’s allergic to grass – of all things.
And with the shocking news earlier in the week that Newcastle may be after David Ngog of Bolton, certainly Gouffran would offer much more than the former Liverpool striker, who’s always found it difficult to score goals.
In the last couple of seasons Gouffran has shown some decent goal-scoring form art Bordeaux, and in 63 appearances for the French club in that period, he has 26 goals including 12 goals in his 26 appearances this season.
Gouffran began his career with Caen before joining Bordeaux in 2008, and he has done well at Bordeaux, and by our records he’s played around 178 times with 40 goals for Bordeaux.
It would be good to get somebody in who has both speed and movement, something that Loic Remy had – but of course we missed out on him. (Note to myself – stop talking about this guy).
Gouffran could be a decent signing for Newcastle in January, and then we could go after a top striker in the summer, when more will be available.
What do you think?

Crap. Leon Best is a better all-round player + goalscorer.

1 striker and 1 CB.. please!
And why why why will Pardew start Shola today.. I’m worried if it’s true

7 yorkshireToon // Jan 19, 2013 at 1:12 PM
Don’t know much about this guy, anyone seen him play a few times?
8 SupaToonKid // Jan 19, 2013 at 1:17 PM
Goufrann reminds me alot of Obertan & Gervinho. I’d rather have PEA or Gameiro. Mbiwa though should be the focus of this window!
9 Tommyy // Jan 19, 2013 at 1:17 PM
Yep he’s ok, nothing special but better and more direct than Obertan and as a third choice striker he’d be top notch I’d say.
10 likeajediknight // Jan 19, 2013 at 1:17 PM
seen him a few times, including obviously this season; looks wank if you ask me, too lightweight for the prem n not even fast, a very poor mans shane long
11 santonthenewmaldini // Jan 19, 2013 at 1:21 PM
Thing is this guy is on better form than Remy at the moment and we will probably get him for half the price and wage that Remy wanted cause his contract is running out
Could be a bargain just feel he might be a bit too lightweight for the premier league as I feel Remy will be 2 powder puff as well
If we got this guy for like 4 million and Mbiwa for 6 million that would be a shrewd bit of business although would still love us to sign Erik Pieters as well think we could resurrect his career which has stalled from injury
Is anyone concerned about our lack of height tho?Its a cause for concern at both ends of the pitch for me we need a few great headers of the ball as we win so many free kicks but they come to nothing
Should maybe try get Luuk De Jong again would be cheaper now that he is not having a good time and said the style of play that Monchen play is not direct enough!!!
12 Thump // Jan 19, 2013 at 1:23 PM
Yes, please stop talking about Remy.
PLEASE.
13 yorkshireToon // Jan 19, 2013 at 1:23 PM
Cheers tommyy
Looking like we won’t be signing that star striker this window then.
I’m just desperate for a striker with bags of pace to give us another option and for someone to make the runs for the through balls, because cisse even though he doesn’t look it, is pretty slow.
14 theroosta // Jan 19, 2013 at 1:25 PM
Crunch time approaching, shola will no doubt start today along with perch and williamson and jonas.
I feel if we get a draw today it will be what i am expecting, cant believe i am thinking this way about a home match with reading with respect to them.
I am summizing of course that the aforementioned players are playing, ir just reeks of a fear to loose rather than a positive to win.
My applogies for the negativity,i bleedin hate thinkin like this before a game at home.
If we win, champagne all round, and i will be back on to say how wrong i was, and it could well happen its just if he plays the line up i think he will its going to be a very tense afternoon for all of us.

@Indian Magpie
You kidding ?I heard Llambas still has 10 days holiday to take before the end of January
18 Markaccus // Jan 19, 2013 at 1:29 PM
Goal per game record is reasonable. Nearly 1 in 2. Sign him up. 2 cbks and that might be enough to survive.
19 Rowan Milsted // Jan 19, 2013 at 1:30 PM
Hmm, his stats aren’t amazing. I don’t know much about him but he is having a decent season and has been injury free since June 2011 (I’m getting my stats from transfermarkt). I don’t think he’ll be a prolific goal scorer in the EPL. Then again, he is only contracted until June this year and could be reasonably cheap (£6m-ish). I dunno. All I know is that we need 3 points today. I’m thinking 2-1 to the Toon.
20 Toonaholic // Jan 19, 2013 at 1:31 PM
Alright I know youtube inst the greatest source to go by, but he can finish well with both feet, and his head! Cant be bad can it! Fast, can finish and header, can play on wing and strike, exactly what we need, and if he is too lightweight a few weeks in the gym will aid that.
But we may not even be after him so meh :/
21 Solaidback // Jan 19, 2013 at 1:32 PM
When will some fans get over the fact that we as a club are not signing ‘trophy’ players anymore, we try to get value for money & won’t be held to ransom by the selling club, players or their sumbag agents for stupid amounts.. I’m 100% behind Ashley on this & hope soon that the governing body of football puts a ban on players have mutilpal agents & that if the clusb agree a price, other clubs can’t hijack the deal for higher money, scumback the lot of them & its ruining our national sport imo
22 Indian Magpie (HD_07 on Twitter) // Jan 19, 2013 at 1:33 PM

23 chris_g // Jan 19, 2013 at 1:33 PM
“And with the shocking news earlier in the week that Newcastle may be after David Ngog of Bolton….”
Ed, the David Ngog rumour was started by a uni student who was doing a research project where he was trying to find out how many people in the world were stupid enough to believe him. He only got two bites. One of them was Simon Jones of the Daily Mail. The other one was you

25 croftus5678 // Jan 19, 2013 at 1:34 PM
mbiwa pls + i dont care about ngog’s goalscoring rate 4 goals in 13 games aint bad for someone meant for a creative striker in the team he’s in.
and we definatly need (not hight as fardinand was only 5’8″) but someone who’s good with there head ! mbiwa i hope will do this but we need mid/strikers who are aswell ! i think we only have saylor who’s any good atm.
26 mattnufc // Jan 19, 2013 at 1:35 PM
Just to increase the pressure on today’s game:
Reading have the worst away record in the country’s top 4 divisions, acquiring just 2 points.
27 toonbrother // Jan 19, 2013 at 1:35 PM
I think he’d be a good signing to supplement what we already have this season. Last thing we want is to have to rely on Shola Ameobi for goals. We can bring in Carroll in the summer.
28 petey // Jan 19, 2013 at 1:36 PM
what is this? just pick a random name out of the hat full of french league players…..
i hear llorente wants out and could be offered for cheap
even Jovetic at the rate italians are starting selling players
29 Markaccus // Jan 19, 2013 at 1:36 PM
Rowan. Stats are often meaningless, especially from a different league. I just think he might give us the pace and creativity we are mostly lacking,
30 jayphoto // Jan 19, 2013 at 1:37 PM
Ed, iv got to disagree, i dont see much difference between N’gog and Gouffran! N’gog is a lot better than people on here give him credit for, he was regarded as the next supersstar when he was 18 in france! If he came as a 3rd striker it wouldnt be bad, he works very hard for the team! Never really been amazed by gouffran, hes like a slower obertan, hed cost about 8m and really isnt worth it but hes having a good season!
31 jimiley // Jan 19, 2013 at 1:37 PM
Jonas to show his international class today. I reckon he will score a brace and set up another two. FOUR NIL to Toon. We always play better when Jonas is in the team. We are much more difficult to beat.
32 jimiley // Jan 19, 2013 at 1:39 PM
If we bring Carroll in the summer we can give up all claims to being a football team. We should take up basketball as a more refined version of hoofball.
33 mattnufc // Jan 19, 2013 at 1:40 PM
Jonas to score? More chance Mike Ashley will score a free kick..
34 jayphoto // Jan 19, 2013 at 1:41 PM
See todays game on, had a feelin it would after twitter guru colin said itd be off last night! Bit nervy coz when we played them away it was demba ba who they couldnt handle, saying that they concede alot so could be a good day to get cisse back firing
35 robin // Jan 19, 2013 at 1:42 PM
After reading Pardews description of Lambias being ruthless it seems to back Redknapps assessment of him as a rude obnoxious character that puts players and their representatives off joining the club! Now we are starting to build a clear picture of why they are failing in the transfer market, they have no class. Ashley knows the price of everything but the value of nothing, un-like the supporters!
36 Markaccus // Jan 19, 2013 at 1:43 PM
Jimily, it would depend on how Carroll was played, and who with. If he played as the target man in a 433, rotated with cisse, then that would be ok. 442, then you’d be right about long ball cr@p. I don’t think we’re getting carroll back anyway.
37 croftus5678 // Jan 19, 2013 at 1:43 PM
@30
hehehe i love the fact of being positive but jonas scoring a brace i think is impossible for a start he never gets over the 3/4 mark and when he does he hits the ground like a sack of tat’s i’ll go 3-1 to the toon cabaye and marv to score them.
38 jayphoto // Jan 19, 2013 at 1:45 PM
Dont get this hoofball tag, in the last 7/8 games weve really only played on the deck asides from krul and willo! Think weve played some decent stuff against arsenal for 70 mins, man utd for all the mins, wigan etc, we were poor against norwich but we shut them down defensively and its a hard place to go
39 jimiley // Jan 19, 2013 at 1:45 PM
Robin
You are right. They haggle over everything and try to get transfers and wages on the cheap. They wind prospective players up. In the end, we are left with the rubbish nobody else wants. Pardew call it aggressive negotiating. But its really boorish incompetence.
40 geordie157 // Jan 19, 2013 at 1:46 PM
Is Saylor in the squad?
If so i can’t decide between a 4411, 442 or a 4231 formation
We dont seem to have players that fit a 433 at the moment. So i’ve gone for this 4411 think Debuchy could help Jonas find some form again, Anita and Jonas can swap wings if need be. Fergs possibly is a shout, Obertan after two shocking displays should not be starting.
Krul
Debuchy Saylor Colo Santon
Jonas Cabaye Perch Anita
Marveaux
Cisse
i’m not even sure thats good enough to beat Reading!! We lack a quality cb and st as we all know, but we lack a quality winger too!!
41 jimiley // Jan 19, 2013 at 1:48 PM
Geordie,
None of our wingers can cross a ball in the air. They are all scuffed along the ground or chipped into the box. Did I call them wingers?????
42 mattnufc // Jan 19, 2013 at 1:48 PM
Anita will not start on the wing:
He is not a winger
But mainly Pardew’s undying love of Obertan/ Squidward.
43 RooneyToons // Jan 19, 2013 at 1:49 PM
I’ve seen him play a few times and hes a good player who looks like hes coming into his own, technically very good and he’s been in great form this season…. This is a no brainier for me he’s got 6 months left on his contract he can play on the wing also and we could pick him up for about 2-3 million.
Him combined with one other striker(£7-£10 mill) and we have a complete forward line who are battling for places and need to take there chance… Lets face it when Sholla is your only threat you can get away with scoring 1 in 4
HWTL
44 Rowan Milsted // Jan 19, 2013 at 1:49 PM
Markaccus
Yeah, stats aren’t the be all and end all, and I admit that I don’t know much about him. I do think that his goal scoring rate isn’t prolific enough to suggest he will have an impact in the EPL, but I hope that if we are seriously after him then it’s because he could fit into our team well and perform better. If he’s fast and can score with both feet – and his head – then that is certainly an advantage. He wouldn’t cost the earth either and Cisse needs someone pacey around him who can play off the wings and give him assists – he had no service at all vs Norwich. On that note I hope Marveaux starts today as he is a player who can do that. Cabaye back to form, Colo solid, Cisse with a goal or two… One can only hope.
45 jimiley // Jan 19, 2013 at 1:50 PM
I think we will win FOUR NIL. Interesting times if we lose. But Pards will keep his job. I believe he would keep it if we got relegated.

I just wanted to say my opinion on the last articles header wasn’t meant to be the ongoing discussion. I apologise for that.
Sorry i couldn’t partake any more than i did, i’m a bit busy re-doing a kitchen.
A general reply though. Thanks to those who’s opinion sided with me and those who defended me.
To those saying i should give more respect to Ed, i really do respect him as much as i can.
My father has gone through similar things as Ed, but has come out on top, albeit a bit reduced. That doesn’t stop me from criticise him when things repeat themselves.
I’m glad i could redirect some of the negative attention towards the club, lol.
48 Markaccus // Jan 19, 2013 at 1:54 PM
Geordie157, I think the players you’ve picked could be used in a 433:
Krul
Debuchey colo staylor santon
Perch cabaye anita
Marveaux cisse jonas
Wide forwards keep switching wings. A dynamic formation keeps opposition teams guessing.
49 colwell // Jan 19, 2013 at 1:55 PM
Reading is not an easy game, they just beat Stoke away and have played some good stuff.
50 geordie157 // Jan 19, 2013 at 1:56 PM

52 Grafton83 // Jan 19, 2013 at 1:59 PM
I’d take this player on stats alone it’s a no brainer. He wouldn’t be available for Europa League though which is a shame.
53 Grafton83 // Jan 19, 2013 at 2:00 PM
Taylor won’t start today it’ll be Willo and Colo
54 geordieracer1980 // Jan 19, 2013 at 2:00 PM
croftus5678 – Ferdinand was only 5ft 8? I think your memory is playing tricks on you, lad! He wasn’t massively tall but he was bigger than that! Best header of the ball of seen, mind. An absolute power house.
jayphoto – you’re one of the posters i look out for on here as it seems you have a good knowledge of European footall. How do you rate Mbwia? I haven’t seen him play, but going by reports he is a quality player.
55 geordie157 // Jan 19, 2013 at 2:01 PM
Markaccus, careful with use of the word “dynamic” i’m not sure our players or manager know what that word means.
If Jonas was like he was a few yrs ago then yes, but he’s been poor for a while now. So thought maybe as Debuchy is prob better at defending than Santon, Jonas on the right lifts a little bit of defensive responsibility from him so he can influence the game more.
Marv i like, but just feel he struggles out wide so a old no.10 type role linking the midfield to cisse gets the best out him.
56 mattnufc // Jan 19, 2013 at 2:01 PM
SHOLA ON THE WING!!
57 mattnufc // Jan 19, 2013 at 2:02 PM
Krul; Debuchy, Williamson, Coloccini (c), Santon; Anita, Cabaye; Shola Ameobi, Marveaux, Gutierrez; Cisse.
58 alf // Jan 19, 2013 at 2:02 PM
You would think Pardew was talking about Lambias being in the Sopranos or Goodfellows rather than at a football club, no wonder other clubs avoid the snide like the Plague now his Gaffer Ashley is starting to flap that the club might be relegated and has decided to conduct the transfers himself. So with a bit of luck Derek The Snide Lambias might swim with the fishes!
59 Macas // Jan 19, 2013 at 2:02 PM

60 ToonDownSouth // Jan 19, 2013 at 2:03 PM
Shola… … on the wing?
Erm? Why not just play 4-4-2?
Shola on the wing. Right.
61 Rowan Milsted // Jan 19, 2013 at 2:03 PM
I’m worried that we’ll play a 4-4-2 as we’re missing some players that would help us play 4-3-3, or a variation of that. If we do play some form of 4-3-3 then it may feature Jonas as an attacking winger-come-striker… or a start for Obers, who has been awful the last 2 games. We could really do with Saylor and HBA coming back soon and Tiote is a big loss (state the obvious, I know!). Personally I feel that having Raylor fit would be a huge benefit at the moment. He can cross and take excellent set pieces – two things we’re very short of.
62 Markaccus // Jan 19, 2013 at 2:04 PM
Rowan. Yes at the price he’d be available for, he’s probably worth the risk. One area newcastle have always had difficulty (as far as I can remember) is getting the best out of out-and-out goal scoring wingers. We tend to use them as a wide left MF (laurent robert, Luque) or as a second striker (luque, obertan). There have been others too. I agree Marveaux should be played as wing forward in a 433.
63 Rowan Milsted // Jan 19, 2013 at 2:05 PM
‘Shola on the wing’…
Seriously? No. Can’t be. That would be ridiculous.
64 Grafton83 // Jan 19, 2013 at 2:06 PM
@jimiley, playing the game at this level I find completely ridiculous that we don’t have anyone capable of providing crosses with the only possible exception to that being Ferguson.
Unless we miraculously learn to pass it into the net like Barcalona the only other option is constant long balls. Yayyyyyy!!!
65 Rotonda heights // Jan 19, 2013 at 2:08 PM
Is pardew just the most predictable manager ever.
We could be 433 with obi and marv either side of Cisse, but no, it’ll either be 433 with no pace Jonas and shola on the wings or a 442 hoofball with shola and cisse.
You couldn’t make it up the guy is so clueless. Shola doesn’t do 90 mins !!
66 Markaccus // Jan 19, 2013 at 2:09 PM
Geordie: haha, yeah ‘dynamic’ might be a rude word in the toon dressing room! I still think, with cabaye as a link man, anita and perch as DF, marveaux and jonas might get a bit more confidence to push forward and grab a couple of goals, of make some for cisse. We just need a run of games with the same team playing.
67 Grafton83 // Jan 19, 2013 at 2:13 PM
Would prefer a 4-4-1-1 with Marv behind Cisse rather than Shola and Cisee in a 4-4-2
