Newcastle United are being linked today with Bordeaux forward Yoan Gouffran, who can play on the wing or as an out-and-out striker, and he has played 22 times for the France U21 side, but has never been capped at the full International level.
Yoan Gouffran – Newcastle interested?
Yoan stands 5’10” tall and has something we don’t have much of in the Newcastle side at the moment – speed – and he can put the ball home with either foot. He’s 26 and one of the strange things about the player is that he’s allergic to grass – of all things.
And with the shocking news earlier in the week that Newcastle may be after David Ngog of Bolton, certainly Gouffran would offer much more than the former Liverpool striker, who’s always found it difficult to score goals.
In the last couple of seasons Gouffran has shown some decent goal-scoring form art Bordeaux, and in 63 appearances for the French club in that period, he has 26 goals including 12 goals in his 26 appearances this season.
Gouffran began his career with Caen before joining Bordeaux in 2008, and he has done well at Bordeaux, and by our records he’s played around 178 times with 40 goals for Bordeaux.
It would be good to get somebody in who has both speed and movement, something that Loic Remy had – but of course we missed out on him. (Note to myself – stop talking about this guy).
Gouffran could be a decent signing for Newcastle in January, and then we could go after a top striker in the summer, when more will be available.
What do you think?

None of our wingers can cross a ball in the air. They are all scuffed along the ground or chipped into the box. Did I call them wingers?????

Comment #42Anita will not start on the wing:
He is not a winger
But mainly Pardew’s undying love of Obertan/ Squidward.

Comment #43I’ve seen him play a few times and hes a good player who looks like hes coming into his own, technically very good and he’s been in great form this season…. This is a no brainier for me he’s got 6 months left on his contract he can play on the wing also and we could pick him up for about 2-3 million.
Him combined with one other striker(£7-£10 mill) and we have a complete forward line who are battling for places and need to take there chance… Lets face it when Sholla is your only threat you can get away with scoring 1 in 4

Yeah, stats aren’t the be all and end all, and I admit that I don’t know much about him. I do think that his goal scoring rate isn’t prolific enough to suggest he will have an impact in the EPL, but I hope that if we are seriously after him then it’s because he could fit into our team well and perform better. If he’s fast and can score with both feet – and his head – then that is certainly an advantage. He wouldn’t cost the earth either and Cisse needs someone pacey around him who can play off the wings and give him assists – he had no service at all vs Norwich. On that note I hope Marveaux starts today as he is a player who can do that. Cabaye back to form, Colo solid, Cisse with a goal or two… One can only hope.

Comment #45I think we will win FOUR NIL. Interesting times if we lose. But Pards will keep his job. I believe he would keep it if we got relegated.

Comment #47I just wanted to say my opinion on the last articles header wasn’t meant to be the ongoing discussion. I apologise for that.
Sorry i couldn’t partake any more than i did, i’m a bit busy re-doing a kitchen.
A general reply though. Thanks to those who’s opinion sided with me and those who defended me.
To those saying i should give more respect to Ed, i really do respect him as much as i can.
My father has gone through similar things as Ed, but has come out on top, albeit a bit reduced. That doesn’t stop me from criticise him when things repeat themselves.
I’m glad i could redirect some of the negative attention towards the club, lol.

Comment #48Geordie157, I think the players you’ve picked could be used in a 433:
Krul
Debuchey colo staylor santon
Perch cabaye anita
Marveaux cisse jonas
Wide forwards keep switching wings. A dynamic formation keeps opposition teams guessing.

Comment #54croftus5678 – Ferdinand was only 5ft 8? I think your memory is playing tricks on you, lad! He wasn’t massively tall but he was bigger than that! Best header of the ball of seen, mind. An absolute power house.
jayphoto – you’re one of the posters i look out for on here as it seems you have a good knowledge of European footall. How do you rate Mbwia? I haven’t seen him play, but going by reports he is a quality player.

Comment #55Markaccus, careful with use of the word “dynamic” i’m not sure our players or manager know what that word means.
If Jonas was like he was a few yrs ago then yes, but he’s been poor for a while now. So thought maybe as Debuchy is prob better at defending than Santon, Jonas on the right lifts a little bit of defensive responsibility from him so he can influence the game more.
Marv i like, but just feel he struggles out wide so a old no.10 type role linking the midfield to cisse gets the best out him.

Comment #58You would think Pardew was talking about Lambias being in the Sopranos or Goodfellows rather than at a football club, no wonder other clubs avoid the snide like the Plague now his Gaffer Ashley is starting to flap that the club might be relegated and has decided to conduct the transfers himself. So with a bit of luck Derek The Snide Lambias might swim with the fishes!

Comment #60Shola… … on the wing?
Erm? Why not just play 4-4-2?
Shola on the wing. Right.

Comment #61I’m worried that we’ll play a 4-4-2 as we’re missing some players that would help us play 4-3-3, or a variation of that. If we do play some form of 4-3-3 then it may feature Jonas as an attacking winger-come-striker… or a start for Obers, who has been awful the last 2 games. We could really do with Saylor and HBA coming back soon and Tiote is a big loss (state the obvious, I know!). Personally I feel that having Raylor fit would be a huge benefit at the moment. He can cross and take excellent set pieces – two things we’re very short of.

Comment #62Rowan. Yes at the price he’d be available for, he’s probably worth the risk. One area newcastle have always had difficulty (as far as I can remember) is getting the best out of out-and-out goal scoring wingers. We tend to use them as a wide left MF (laurent robert, Luque) or as a second striker (luque, obertan). There have been others too. I agree Marveaux should be played as wing forward in a 433.

Comment #64@jimiley, playing the game at this level I find completely ridiculous that we don’t have anyone capable of providing crosses with the only possible exception to that being Ferguson.
Unless we miraculously learn to pass it into the net like Barcalona the only other option is constant long balls. Yayyyyyy!!!

Comment #65Is pardew just the most predictable manager ever.
We could be 433 with obi and marv either side of Cisse, but no, it’ll either be 433 with no pace Jonas and shola on the wings or a 442 hoofball with shola and cisse.
You couldn’t make it up the guy is so clueless. Shola doesn’t do 90 mins !!

Comment #66Geordie: haha, yeah ‘dynamic’ might be a rude word in the toon dressing room! I still think, with cabaye as a link man, anita and perch as DF, marveaux and jonas might get a bit more confidence to push forward and grab a couple of goals, of make some for cisse. We just need a run of games with the same team playing.

Comment #73all this remy talk and panic has led to overlooking one of the best transfer candidates possible !!! Younes BELHANDA of montpellier…meets all requirements!!! French check, CAM (12 goals in 28 last season) available for 10 million euros…quality player… i followed him last couple of years….but unfortunately fenerbache are closing in on him..seriously i would love it if we went all qpr style on them and hijacked the deal….i think he’d rather play for newcastle in the premier league than fenerbache….and monteplier are asking for 10 mil euros while fener are offering 8 so if newcastle put in 10 right now….on personal terms i think itll be very easy to close belhanda…youtube the kid hes class…just behind cisse would be lovely !!! I dont know why im blabbing but in my head hes the perfect signing….
