Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew has made the observation that Reading’s Russian International striker Pavel Pogrebnyak is one of the Premier League’s worst divers, especially close to or in the penalty area.
Pavel Pogrebnyak – Russian diver
The Newcastle manager has singled out the Russian, probably to alert the referee of what the Russian does to get his team an advantage in games, although he’s probably only the third best (not sure that’s the right word) diver in the league behind Louis Suarez of Liverpool (nobody’s better than this lad at going down), and Gareth Bale of Tottenham.
Here’s what Alan Pardew said about the Russian:
“When we come to Reading, this is a battling side we’re playing. They’re great at set plays — but the striker Pogrebnyak, he falls over.” “He’s one of the worst players I’ve seen for falling over and buying free-kicks, so we have got to be clever.”
There are some reports of this that say it’s a bizarre claim by Pardew that the Russian dives, but it’s not bizarre at all – and too many players do this in the Premier League these days, and it’s one of the dark sides of football, and it’s nothing short of cheating.
Wonder how Lance Armstrong would be at it – if he played football?
There’s a thought.
